Comments of The Waiters Restaurant

I and my friend visited on Friday night and the place was very packed. If you’re lucky enough you can pick a seat on your own and don’t have to share a table with other customers.
We ordered their special menu, the rabbit cachatorie on black board which has no prices and another pasta. The rabbit is alright but a bit pricey. Their pasta was very yummy though !
Also their customer service was great even though they’re very busy but extremely helpful.

📍: 20 Meyers Place, CBD
📝: Never knew about this hidden gem in the city before. Such a cute and small family Italian restaurant with authentic pastas and dishes.
❤️: We got the big pasta platter so we could try a bit of everything. My favorite had to be the 🍝🥓🧀 Carbonara spaghetti, so tasty I don’t even know how to explain 😍 A definite MUST ORDER!

This is the best dining experience I have had this year.
The staff are friendly but efficient. The atmosphere is simple and authentic, but makes you feel good and warm.
The wine to begin the dining experience was served in a water glass, which was a bit different, but fit the aura of this establishment perfectly, and just made sense.
The food, wow, the food. It comes out ready for the consumer to season to their liking with the selection of salt, pepper, chili flakes and parmesan cheese. My partner and I both had the mushroom pappardelle and it was brilliant. Not too much oil or cheese, but definitely not too dry. Very, very authentic Italian cooking.
We finished our meal with a tiramisu which was the exact right balance between sweet and bitter. It left us with a warm little glow in our tums as we walked in the rain back to our hotel room.
Highly recommend.

Tasty and hearty Italian food in the CBD. You get up stairs in an alley to get to it. The restaurant is small so booking is essential especially for lunch. They have good bread and bruschetta. The marinara was nice with a bit more salt and pepper. Overall a good feed.
C. J.
We arrived without a booking, and was seated, fed and left within 45 mins...
Everything you want, good food, no frills, bustling atmosphere and a fair bill at the end.
If you want good Italian food, look no further. Hidden up a stairway, down an alley, feels like you are in the know. Just rock up and hope for the best, but if you want a more relaxed visit I recommend booking.
S. B.
Nice place with a good vibe. Fast service and friendly staff. Awesome and fresh Italian food. Vegetarian options available and tasty past, starters are amazing.
J. M.
Wonderful food. Spaghetti Marinara was excellent, generous serving of prawns too. Loved the Tartuffo as a dessert. We will be back. Thanks for a wonderful dinner😀
H. i.
Hidden up a flight of stairs is this amazing Italian restaurant. Oozing homely atmosphere, you'll feel like you've walked into someone's home for a meal. The dishes here are reasonably priced, full of flavours and executed beautifully. Can't go wrong with the pasta, and that carbonara is absolutely heavenly. For something different, order the whole fish.
L. C.
Wonderful restaurant. The Waiters captures what is great about Melbourne’s Italian scene. Knowledgeable staff who get it, impeccable menu, food is sensational and you must always get the tiramisu as a rule. I dine here regularly with friends and family and cannot recommend this restaurant enough.
L. M.
If you can find this hidden place, don't tell anyone else. The pasta is delicious, and better than can be made at home.
The staff are lovely, and if you're lucky enough to get in then eat here. And order the garlic bread!
T.
Great traditional Italian restaurant. Hidden upstairs off a laneway in the CBD close to Parliament House.
No menu but order off a blackboard on the wall. The great pasta selection is what most people come here for.
Usually quite full around lunch and dinner time but people come and go reasonably quickly so it is only a short wait.
Quick efficient and friendly service.
J. W.
I really liked the food! Please was busy, which was a good sign. I would book in advance. Although we didn’t and the waitress was happy to accomodate up. Food was exceptional! A lot of choice , so this will cater for everyone. Will be good to see the prices on the board though? I would love to come here again
N. H.
The menu (charmingly written on blackboards around the restaurant) offers a wide range of Italian favorites. There's a genuine energy and warmth on the inside, and you get the feeling that everyone is having a terrific time, no matter where they're seated or what they've ordered. It is a Melbourne institution and long may it continue.
V. D.
It is a small place but it is worth making a booking there. Excellent casalingo cooking with plenty of pasta dishes and it has a good, old school Italian appearance.
E. P.
Food soooo good! Home-made, Italian, delicious! We will be back. Thanks for a wonderful dinner😀
T. B.
Authentic Italian, with everything on the menu that you would expect. Generous servings, in a casual noisy bustling atmosphere. Don't expect to while away to many hours in there at lunch, they move everyone on at the end of each session. By the way it is BYO.
Would recommend.
👍👍👍👍👍
C. H. (.
Busily restaurant tucked away up a lame up a flight of stairs. The menu is posted on the wall without prices but ranges between $20-$30 per meal. Yummy pasta and equally nice $10 desserts. BYO too but don’t expect a wine glass.
M. B. M.
this is one of my favourite places for pasta - a no frill place with genuinely good food. i arrived to find the place booked out but staff was very accommodating and found a shared table for me.
i ordered lamb shank which was enormous with so tender fall off the bone meat yet when i had my first mouthful, i went ooooohhh.... it was salty! but being famished and having only limited time, i ate what i could and left feeling disappointed. however, i will return and this time stick to pasta.
T. M.
My absolute favourite restaurant in Melbourne, best Italian food, absolutely love the staff, such a homey personal feel, I have been too many times to count, an absolute gem of Melbourne, I take all my friends and family here, cannot recommend highly enough
J. L.
First time to the Italian Waiters Restaurant and it won't be my last. My understanding is that it's a Melbourne institution and it didn't disappoint. It's cosy, and always busy so best to reserve a table. Not a lot of room to maneuver as they fit a lot of people in and tables are constantly being filled. The food comes out quick and hot and what we orders was amazing. A simple menu done well. The wines as clean skins so it's not about brands. Our shiraz was a nice drop. Dessert was also yummy. Definately recommended for dinner for two or big groups. Can't wait to go back.
H. T.
A home feel Italian place in the city. Very reasonably priced. The pasta is about $20. I went there twice and ordered two different pasta. They both were good.
J. Y.
Delicious traditional carbonara!! Walked in around 715pm on a Saturday without a booking and luckily was seated at the shared table. 2 pasta dishes, salad and garlic bread came out super quick! Service was lovely and faultless, though they were a little busy and accidentally forgot to offer water but gave us the extra glasses for it (we had BYO wine). Would recommend this place!
r. a. v. h.
Delicious meal, friendly staff. Would definitely dine here again.
D.
Rustic yet cosy restaurant with great atmosphere. Their entrees are so so but pastas are fantastic - good prices as well !
J. D.
Friendly staff very helpful in describing the menu. A great spot for a reliable meal and friendly community vibe.
The chicken liver a meal that may not at first appeal was delicious, a simple combination of liver with some caramelised onion prepared with white wine and vinegar created a deliciously rich meal. Best shared and combined with one of the delicious pastas.
N. Z.
It’s ok for the price in comparison to expensive Italian food. Came here after work with no booking at 6pm - got lucky and scored two seats. Ambiance is nice, table service great, Presentation 10/10 however food was surprisingly average. There are far better Italian places (pellegrinis, the European, Tipo 00, botega, etc) in town however it’s good for the price you get. We had this lovely looking antipasti, two glasses wine, the ocean trout Tuesday special (great), seafood marinara (average), tiramisu (average) - $50 each. Simplicity is great, service was good but won’t come again - there are far more places that is better in the CBD. Thank you for the experience however we won’t be coming again. We live in Melbourne where the options are plentiful and life is too short and there are too many places to try.
T. B.
Torn on this rating. The food is awesome while the decor, setting, and service is quite 'rustic'. The prices however do not reflect the rough, cramped & cheap setting.
G. R.
Quick service. Not pretentious. Gnocchi that i had was overcooked which become mushy. Generous serving and resasonably priced. Tiramisu were good and hold its consistency well.
I. W.
Best pasta!!!! We tried four of their pastas and they were all equally delicious. I would 100% recommend the ravioli Napoli and the pappardelle fungi!
Really cool little setup they have. Very homey!!
Just FYI it can be very busy, noisy and bright!! (Bright lighting) so if you have any sensory issues, this may be a concern.
Best pasta I’ve had in a long time ♥️
J. L.
Fantastic food. Accommodating as always. Love this place. Love the staff.
S. S.
This place has been around for years! Just love it! Quick lunch time meal with the work gang. Good food near tram and train
J. F.
A fantastic Italian meal, served quickly.
G. B.
Busy, noisy, super friendly vibe. The food is always terrific. Choose any pasta with any sauce. Crepes are a fun ending. Service and staff are the best. Love it. Every month.
G. H.
Great pasta, the rose tasted off and watered down, but definitely improved paired with pasta. I don't appreciate the lack of prices on the menu. Service decent, but nothing special. Would definitely give it another go though.
S. E.
No fuss honest Italian place. Good selection of pasta. Loved it.
R. D.
If you’re in for an informal home-style Italian meal, this is a great place. One room, 8mx4m, 15 tables with 3 waitresses. Menu on the blackboard, decent home Chianti, extremely (too) fast service, and overall, a place we’d sample again.
P. W.
Don't let the photos of empty tables and chairs deceive you - this place is packed to the rafters at lunch time! Solid menu of pastas and meat dishes.
M. R.
Simple authentic Italian menu. Upstairs with slightly grunge feel, makes you feel like an insider. A bit draughty near the door, cheap wine. Good quick service.
W.
Good chill place which you can bring your own bottle of wine too, which is a plus. (But they give you just water glasses to drink out of so don’t bring something special that you wanna swirl and sniff..)
I like the carbonara. Be sure to get it not with spaghetti though. Get it with tagliatelle or something like that.
L. Y.
So yum!! Loved it! Tiramisu was pretty big, will need to bring a friend to share with next time~
C. M.
Super good, perfect portions, no frills.
C. C.
I love this place! It has the feel of the local trattoria in any small Italian town. Good simple Italian food, well prepared, and friendly staff.
P. S.
Easily one of Melbourne's finest Italian restaurants. Great staff, fabulous food and a quirky, informal atmosphere make for a great dining experience!
A. “. G.
Italian home style. , Unpretentious. As though it is actually a home, which is of course, not true. But, I
O. H.
Cheap and delicious! One of my top Melbourne restaurants! Great place to byo a bottle of wine and enjoy some authentic Italian.
S. G.
Traditional Italian food with great service
d. y.
Lovely place with a lovely ambience! Was served by lovely group of people late @ night, food was made with love! Although prices aren’t mentioned in the menu, the food is worth it and the servings are quite huge. 2-3 is enough for 4-5 people! If you are looking for nice Italian, chilled out late night eats look no further.
L. K.
Great food, and such a fun spot. Pretty much any pasta you can think of, and the sauce is next level. Went twice while in town on business, and it was packed both times - it's loud and lively, and that's the best part. Two meals, with garlic bread, two desserts, and a bottle of wine for $70 - I'll most definitely be back the next time I'm in Melbourne. Try the rosé sauce - they nail it.
K. F.
No bull just genuine Italian fare. We'll be back.
R. S.
Regular late night haunt. Good home cooked food, friendly, like eating at mum's. Always seems to have room for us
P. C.
You don't come here for a gourmet meal. You come here to enjoy well executed homely Italian meal in shoulder to shoulder dining at lunchtime with business colleagues. The great part is its BYO - so you can bring something treasured from the cellar to share with mates. Shades of Bill n Tony's or No Names in Sydney 40 years ago. Long may it be successful.
O. G.
Amazing authentic Italian food, like Nonna used to make. You can taste the love they put in their dishes with every mouthful. This is one place I will be seeking out the next time I visit Melbourne!
D. M.
I have eaten here so many times and I fail to find any reason why I won't come back for more. Great friendly service, quick and bloody tasty food. Wine in a tumbler is champion. Thanks guys.
I would add a picture, but to be honest,I'm always too busy eating 😋
R. P.
Basic decor, good if not great Italian food. Cost of dishes seems to have gone up, but not much else appears to have changed over the years. You can definitely get better for less, but it is a 'Melbourne institution' so worth a visit if you've never been.
A. H.
Che bello ristorante! This place is awesome, great food, somehow effortlessly slick in it's natural Italian style. Plenty of vegetarian options. A steep staircase takes you into a bustling room where the menu is in chalk on the wall. The staff are fast and the food is fantastic. Not a bargain restaurant for it's informality, but it is right on the money in style and taste. I always want to go here when I'm in the area. Open late.
C. B.
I was flat, tired, low on sleep and dragged here. Very glad I was! The Herb bread awesome, the Rigatoni Napoli mild spice done perfectly, washed down with a cool Monteith Cider. Divine. Photos don't do the taste justice.
M. K.
Gone for lunch here a few times with work friends and always had a great meal. The pastas are always fantastic and it's always a great experience. Just be prepared for the staff as the can be a bit short with you
L. H. D.
Was a great place to go for dinner before my improv class across the laneway😁😁
B. D.
Always a super great valued dinner here. BYO wine - there’s a few bottle shops nearby. Staff are always attentive and friendly and the portion sizes are great! Really love the puttanesca here. Such a classic dish done well.
R. L.
Good service and tasty food. Enjoyed the padta option with nice chilli kick in Aglio E Oglio pasta. Tiramisu was enjoyable and of decent serving portion
S. L.
This popular spot serves tasty, home style Italian food at reasonable prices. We had garlic bread, salad and 2 delicious pasta dishes for less than $60. BYO with no corkage charge was a bonus.
K. F.
Probably my favourite Italian place in Melbourne. I've eaten here many a time, and not once have I taken any hostages (let alone 30). Nor has my mother had to show up and hit me with a handbag to defuse the situation. I assume she's proud of me (though to be fair it hasn't come up). Would highly recommend.
C. L.
No frills laminex tables but great home style Italian cooking
T. N.
I've never had such fast service of such delicious food in my life. The perfect I-know-a-place.
D. O.
Such a great classic spot in Melbourne. Really yummy pasta, quick and affordable. The service is the simple, no bullsh*t attitude, which is kind of endearing and refreshing. Great for a quick office lunch or late feed with accompanying vino tinto.
P. C.
Love it. House wine. Home made pasta. Great specials. Tiramisu and limoncello. What more could you want for a night out? Simple Italian food done well.
P. P.
The food is very yummy but it annoys me that there are no prices displayed which makes budgeting a challenge. It's like you have to be part of the cognoscenti to be confident you can afford a bowl of spag bol! Very cramped space. But for all that, it is regarded as a Melbourne institution.
S. D.
So good. Cool vibe, really fun crew that work there and the food is delish 🤌🏻
J. C.
A Melbourne gem. Bustling, friendly and packed with aromas of good, simple food. I came for pasta and was persuaded (with a huge smile) to try the oxtail. Perfect with a glass of Chianti. Thank you.
m. t.
Great Italian resto! Absoulety a hidden gem with good quality pasta and dessert.
C. G.
Four of us ate lunch. Excellent food, plenty of choice, reasonably priced and friendly swift service. What more could you want. Pretty noisy, but that was because it was packed. Make sure you book!
L. C.
An institution. The classics cooked the way nonna expects. Would not be out of place in Italy.
Z. D. J.
Lively restaurant serving up simple but delicious pasta
L. C.
OMG this place is amazing, a couple on the tram recommended it. Best pasta I've had in a long time. Wine and dessert was amazing. Staff were very helpful.
Y. C.
Had the most amazing food. Definitely will be back. 😃
J. W.
Reliably good pasta in a cosy, no frills environment. Being able to BYO is also a plus.
S. J.
Their plain napoli ravioli was spicy. Always ask even if you think it'll be a safe dish, because it just ruined the experience
B. F.
Very busy little restaurant with limited seating. Be prepared to wait for table. They have 90min seating periods service is quick and friendly. Great meal.
A. H.
Quirky, staff lovely the meal I had I would not rave about. In saying that, that may have just been me. This place appears to be very popular.
S. R.
Love THE WAITERS. Where the waiters used to go after they finished their shift. Authentic Italian. Good prices. Very friendly staff. Always a winner but please book ahead.
A. H.
Cosy but pleasant space. Up a staircase so not wheelchair accessible. Food was simple but well done (not needlessly fancy). An enjoyable meal in a shared table setting.
A. W.
The Waiters Restaraunt is one of those hidden gems in Melbourne that everyone needs to try once. I think Pelligrini's (also great) over shadows The Waiters which is great as it keeps it a bit lesser known.
If you go, be sure to try the lasagne. Delish!!
A. T.
Honest and authentic! Such a great place to eat, drink and have fun! The cheap corkage is just a bonus (I swear)!!
A. C.
The pasta is great and affordable. I am giving four stars because they don't have wine glasses. And you really don't want to drink wine from water glasses...
S. U.
No frills Italian as it should be. Nothing pretensious, just simple & quality. Menu is the chalkboard. Small quibble is that it's still a tad pricey.
M. K.
If you are from Sydney and miss Bill and toni's and no names... Well Melbourne has something similar but strangely enough... Just that touch better... Also licenced and byo and soft drinks.... Menu is Also very similar.... Small area... Noisy buzz... Fabulous food... A must to visit.. Plus lots of bars nearby...
S. N.
Authentic home Italian with homey interior. The pasta are done al dente and sauce are perfectly done. Great! Just feel a bit too crowded to queue on the stairs and right behind the entrance.
M. M. i. O.
In a word Superb. Taste buds know. This rich tradition of Authentic Italian is a must for anyone visiting Melbourne. The locals already know this treasure. Thankyou for the wonderful experience.
J. M.
Great food and oh......how popular! I love how part of it's history is on the wall with an article about the siege by a gunman back in the 1970's.....Cops just bring down his Mum and it is all over! Love it!
R. B.
Recently rediscovered this place after a few years gap. Still a great place for a casual catchup or a quick and easy meal. Home cooked Italian - the perfect comfort food. I'll be back!
M. N.
My Favorite restaurant in Melbourne honestly so glad to have found this place the food is so so nice
I love everything off that menu
J. M.
The most Italian experience I've ever had in Australia
M. M.
loved this place! good food, nice wine, good service and very italian. The place is not huge and gets pretty noisy.
A. L.
Basic nut high quality food. Great prices . Great staff. Do not expect starched table coverings or high end wine glasses
R. A.
You feel like you’re in the chefs house here. No frills service, but delicious Italian food. I had a tasty Pappadelle Al Pollo - heavenly.
R. M.
YUM.

Good food and great prices! It’s definitely a good choice for a pasta and a glass of wine
A. M.
Always great! Authentic Italian, authentic restaurant.
S. W.
Love this place. The food is pretty authentic (without being awesome) and the service is fast and friendly. But it is the history and simplicity of Waiter's that makes it a great place
H. Y.
Good cosy venue. The veal Parma is my go to dish here and it's always 👌🏾. Sometimes hard to get a seat as it isn't that large
P. C.
Unique Italian restaurant. Wine by the tumbler full. Fairly steep stairs to climb. Popular, so always book.
T. G.
Easily the best pasta in Melbourne and eclipses the restaurants around it in ever way, great prices and the service is so great. A hidden gem.
H. S.
Unpretentious reasonably priced home cooked Italian food.
Great service but can be a bit noisy as small.
R. B.
Amazing! Honestly the best pasta I've ever had. The service was great and super fast. We will be back
R. O.
Very enjoyable. Loved the spaghetti bolognese as well as the chicken livers. Also, great place for BYO wine
K. L.
Robust and hearty food but definitely expensive, especially when you are under pressure to leave once finished - $120 buys three pasta standards, bread, a liver main and an unremarkable bottle of red.
J. S.
Old school Italian. Only two places to get gnocchi in Melbourne CBD. Waiters and Florentino grill. Waiters is ahead due to the great Napoli sauce.
A. C.
Great food. Very authentic with delicious flavours. Generous wine servings
C. L.
Great food. Love the crowded busy feel of a loved restaurant. Fantastic waiting service. Dont miss it.
B. G. (.
Great food, quick and with atmosphere
J. F.
Super easy, walk in sit down, order, and eat. Simple menu on the wall, not too mNy choises but all super tasty. Love it
A. M.
Had a very good Spinach Crepe. Nice atmosphere.
E.
Tasty Italian food at a very affordable price. Chianti wine was delicious. Staff friendly.
M. B.
No frills service, cheap wine and tasty homestyle meals. Cheerful atmosphere. Left content after a meal of Saltimbocca and Sangiovese
K. S.
Authentic Italian, truly a hidden gem of Melbourne!
N. H.
Always 5 stars. Great food. Great wine. Great friends. What else do you need?
c. d.
Basic decor not many tables but the food and service is 2nd to none, get there early to avoid disappointment
B. T.
Fantastic food and atmosphere
T. H.
Always fantastic service, food will keep going back thanks
T. M.
Although bit on the pricey side when the venue has a no-frills vibe; that aside, food is great, service very switched on with a buzzing atmosphere. Defs heading back soon.
J. H.
Since the refurbishment, some of the menu tastes different. eg the carbonara is more cream and less egg. I prefer it as it was.
B.
Food was delicious and service was super quick even though they were very busy. A hidden gem.
S. T.
Nice, no frills restaurant that commands a steady stream of regular diners. Good food in a familiar environment.
N. C.
Easy, tasty meal. It's exactly what you want... A non pretentious, expert cooked meal. Good prices, quick food. A hidden secret.
B.
A Melbourne institution. Simple, generous Italian fare thats not expensive. Perfect place if heading to a show or in a bit of a rush.
A. H.
Classic Melbourne. Hidden but oh so popular. A great place for good traditional Italian.
G. V.
Excellent, any spaghetti marinara that has whole scallops (with the roe still attached) is a winery in my books.
C. H.
Good wine, good food, very chill. Only downside? Service could've done with a smile :)
K. S.
Food extremely good, service friendly, pricing reasonable. A little crowded but it is fun.
T. B.
I love this place. Really high quality home cooked Italian food.
M. L.
Good food, good service, decent size portions, everything on the menu is priced very appropriately too

Not a fan of anywhere with no prices displayed, no split bills and i didn't see an itemised bill. Food is good and very simple
H. J.
Friendly atmosphere and great service. No prices on the menu which is a bit annoying.
R. A.
Eat there every month
N. H.
It's ok, not quite as good as back in early 2000's. Service is acceptable, seating tad squishy.
G. G.
Gnocchi were fantastic.
D. S.
Wow. Gnocchi gorgonzola was amazing. Super-nice staff too.
D. U.
Melbourne institution. Just go (if you can get a table) & enjoy for yourself. Not cheap, but definitely fantastic value.
