Vapiano on Flinders Lane is a casual and relaxed dining environment, serving up fresh and flavourful Italian cuisine, and is one of my personal favourite restaurants in the CBD. It’s menu, while simple at a glance, will have something for anyone craving a mediterranean soul food spread. The food is prepared quickly and with care, and being able to seamlessly order straight away from a phone makes for a contemporary experience.

Yes almost best Italian restaurant in CBD. They starve you to death and then bring u a huge bowl with tasty pasta. There is no way you don’t like the food if u are that hungry after waiting for 1nhalf hour. We tried Chicken Alfredo and Gamberi pasta with prawns. Chicken was little dry and fusili pasta was little hard and chewy but Gamberi pasta was good ordered it with spaghetti noodles and it’s nice&smooth, prawns are juicy. Good Quality, good quantity little expensive though. Serving time should be reduced I got to say.

What I like about this place is the huge seating capacity and open late until 11pm. So best option for late dinner. The food is tasty too. Just that I think the portions can be a bit better. We got a mushroom risotto and the portion was super small for the price. But great Italian food and lovely ambience.

Ohhhh, Vapianos. Tucked away down a somewhat unknown alley in a relatively quiet part of the Melbourne CBD, Vapianos is a wonderful, unique restaurant with a build-your-own pasta selection. The pasta always tastes fresh and delicious, and the sauces take you to another dimension (but to be fair I always get the same thing so take my word for it, or don’t). Anyway, totally recommend for a fun little outing.

Value for money! The pasta was fresh, my favourite is the carbonara! I love that you can customize it to your liking through their new website ordering system. Paying is really easy too. They also give water jugs to each table which is an underrated but thoroughly appreciated effort. The staff was also really accomodating and friendly to our many requests and questions. While the food took a little longer than expected to come, it was well worth the wait and the customer service more than made up for it! For small eaters, my girlfriend ordered a portion of pasta and had 5/7 of it taken-away to eat at home! She was very pleased with the large portion sizes for their price.

Honestly with QR ordering it’s a headache getting a big parties food order out at once but they didn’t do badly! I had the creamy prawn pasta and it was delish. You can taste the fresh pasta prawns weren’t awful the sauce was good. For the price, in a function birthday style venue I give this place a 5 ;)

It's been a while since the last time I was here, and a little bit disappointed that the chef station was blocked off and I couldn't watch my food being made as usual, but sacrifices must be made to accommodate covid. Good for last minute bookings and adequate pasta. Not bad but not great either. However the bread alone I’d give 4 stars. I like the variety of seating options as you can get cosy on a couch or sit at larger tables for big groups. I’ve been waiting for a long time for this place to reopen, as they had to close down due to the pandemic. I’ve been a fan ever since I was in Dubai, and have fond memories with my partner, so we decided to go on a date night, and was happy to find how spacious the place is! We were greeted by a friendly staff, who asked us to check the digital menu. We ordered the following: Ratatouille Pasta - Loaded with creamy eggplant, artichoke, capsicum, zucchini & onions.. with a choice of fusilli pasta. House-Made Al Forno Lasagne - Layers of fresh pasta with beef & pork bolognese, parmesan & mozzarella, served with a side salad. It took a while for the food to arrive, but it was worth the wait. Both the pasta & the lasagne were well cooked, perfectly seasoned, and the perfect quantity. We will definitely come back for more!

First time trying Vapiano and had a pleasant experience. The ambience is nice and the space is quite big too. Ordering is very convenient via the mobile ordering system. The menu is pretty simple, and you have a lot of flexibility in choosing what pasta type, sauce, and any other extra ingredients. Portions are decent for the price too.

Simple and delicious! Loved the pasta here, it’s cooked beautifully and we enjoyed them. They also have a great selection of desserts to choose from and we tried their tiramisu and nutella cheesecake - so good! Great place for lunch deals! Great atmosphere and interior, but I just wish it was table service. First time at Vapiano for their $12 lunch deals, the place looks amazing, with fresh growing herbs and olive oil and balsamic vinegar at every table, and a semi open kitchen that you can see everything being cooked. The ordering and pickup experience is the main thing I wouldn't mind being changed, the lineup at lunch is long and then being handed a buzzer to collect your food as well as collecting things on metal trays detracts from the feel of when you walk into the lobby + the overall atmosphere of the restaurant. The food itself tastes good and is presented well, we had a few pastas and I got to try some pizzas with our lunch group, all were good but nothing stood out as a must have dish or something i'd always come back for. Overall, the value is good, especially for the price on the lunch deals, but if your getting the same things at full price, the value proposition is a bit harder in my opinion when you combine taste + no table service.

Great food and drinks, super affordable for a night out. One disappointing thing though, was the customer service downstairs. My friend and I waited at the stairs as the sign said wait to be seated. No one came to ask if we were okay and there was a lady at the bar completely ignoring us, after five minutes of waiting I asked the staff member at the bar what to do and she finally directed me upstairs.

Every now and then as I’ve gone in for a work lunch, getting attention at the door seems to be tricky and it seems as if one has to catch the eye of staff - meanwhile we’re checking in, and introducing ourselves to a table before someone greets us. but .. but once service is at play bringing a meal or a drink, no fault there. Warm, friendly and the speed of the food coming out is never an issue. Cocktail of the week (at time of writing) here is the Pavlova Martini and my word, please leave it on the menu. It was superb!

Atmosphere is 5 stars. The ordering system is unique and cool, like a canteen but they cook in front of you. I don't know why other reviewers were bagging this system, don't go if you don't like it! In the pasta section, there are 3 chefs station, they only cook 1 persons meal at a time. Lucky for us, it wasn't a busy night. The pizza is delicious! Its a good place to go with work colleagues or with extended family as everyone has has their own ordering card so there's no pressure for individual to pay lol. Each to their own 😅👍

Good for an affordable, quick sit-down Italian meal - pizza, pasta, salads - in a casual but clean and comfortable environment. Seems to be very popular with the teen-20's crowd. Food cooked after you order so food is - for hot foods at least - hot and fresher. Also like that you can see the chefs cooking your dish so at least you can see they're not adding a little extra something off the floor into it.

Good food for a reasonable price; tasteful Italian dishes, but nothing extraordinary. I’ve come here twice in one day, first I only had a drink during main dinner time; I came back later to have dinner myself. During dinner time (6-8pm) the place is really busy, if one was in a larger group, booking might be advisable; later on (around 9pm), it was very quiet. They offer pasta, pizza and risotto dishes that are typical for the Italian cuisine, including vegetarian, meat and seafood options. At an additional cost one can have gluten free pasta or pizza as well; note, that there is no dedicated gf kitchen space (as is declared on the menu as well); especially not at the pizza station. For pasta, the zoodles are prepared in the pan only and before cooking the gf pasta, the water will be drained and refilled, however, someone with severe gluten intolerance might not be able to eat here due to cross-contamination. I had a gluten free Hemp Fettuccini Ratatouille and it was flavoursome and satisfying. It doesn’t look like it at first, but portion sizes are very filling; I ordered my dish with chilies to be medium-hot and the chef absolutely hit the mark. The pasta was cooked through (typically gluten free pasta is not prepared “al dente”) and does not have a strong additional flavour, so they might work with any sauce or topping. The ratatouille had a well-balanced yet not too intense flavour, mainly from the veggies. To my taste, it could’ve had a bit more tomato-sauce and Italian herbs to it, as gluten free pasta tends to soak up liquids stronger than regular pasta and is very plain in taste, after some time texture was quite thick and dull. When I first ordered my dish, I informed the waitress about my food allergies, and she seemed to have been a bit overwhelmed by it. She double checked with one of kitchen staff if the dish I was about to order suits my dietary requirements. I appreciate her effort for double checking with kitchen staff, however, I think service staff at the counter should know about ingredients & allergens, as during busy times it might not be possible to go and check everything with kitchen staff; it would unnecessarily take up time. All in all, VaPiano is a good place to go to if one wanted Italian food that is fresh & quickly done and affordable.

Generally great pasta, however it can be a bit of a hit and miss depending on which chef is on that day/night. My favourite is the spaghetti carbonara and it is usually cooked to a perfect consistency with creamy sauce. The Vapiano Lemonade is a good drink to supplement the pasta. Great with ice. Highly recommend.

Nice experience as usual. Italian food cooked fresh before your eyes in trendy open dining hall setting. There are enough spaces to entertain a small group or a date, but not a place to go for an unforgettable experience experience. We both had pasta, tagliatelle and ravioli. Larger portion sizes then previous visits, more flavoursome, and complimentary fresh bread a nice touch. Recommended for good Italian (not great) in a comfortable setting or if you're such needed to go for dinner with a group of friends.

Edit: came back here after a year and their serving portions have increased. Flavour was good and price tag is still businessmen pockets instead of uni student. Went in after hearing how good this place is I must say it's well organised, food was good but I would really recommend using different pans for the vegetarian meals. While waiting to order our food there was only one person cooking and there was a whole line waiting which is absolutely wrong I understand you want the customer to see how they are cooking the meal for each one but while this is happening the restaurant will lose customers as there is only one chef cooking there should be at least another two serving people so please take this into consideration, the seating is very nice but not comfortable to sit down and eat, customer service please greeting people is very important don't just wave at them to come up.

This is one of my go-tos if I needed to recommend a lunch option because it's consistently good, and they have enough tables such that you shouldn't have a problem just walking in, no bookings required. They've recently changed their payment system so you no longer get a card to tap on all orders and pay afterwards, you now pay at the front as you order, and pick up your food at the relevant counters when your buzzer beeps. No credit card surcharge.

If you're looking for nice Italian food, this is a good place for it... But I was honestly really disappointed with the rest of the experience. I had been to the Vapiano on Gold Coast, and figured it would be similar. It seems the restaurant here does not cook your meal in front of you as I've experience before, so that felt quite different. I had a booking for 12, and our wait staff did not take us up to our table that was quite far up the stairs and hidden in the corner. I thought this was a bit odd considering they weren't busy at this point and thought it would be hospitable to show us to the table. When we arrived there was no music, then sudden loud music, then quite and loud again - this was probably the most disruptive about the ambiance. The wait staff seemed insecure, confused and not very confident about who's food belonged to who, where to put food/drinks down, and it overall just felt a bit off. Maybe we came in on a bad day, as my experience at Gold Coast was so good, and the reviews here are great... But I feel I can get delicious Italian food and better service and ambiance elsewhere.

I didn't like the ordering process of having to line up and wait for a while to have your food cooked in front of you. To me this was not needed and didn't really add any value or experience, I just want my food order and then bring to me when it's ready. Lots a lot of time in line instead of being at the table talking with friends. Food was tasty and good quality but it all seems like a production line food. Everything was pre packed in single serving bags and they just sort of mix it all up/cook it I front of you. Pricing wise it was good value for money. Can't comment on services as staff don't really do anything for you.

I've had good pasta here before. But the pizza on my visit was very mixed. The ham and mushroom pizza was very bland, but the pollo chicken was yum. Also they were lukewarm at best. I have visited this place few years ago and I loved. We could choose the ingredients and watch the pasta being prepared in front of you. However, I returned there recently and it is a bit different. You make you order and have to collect your plate after a long wait. Not a good experience in the bar also, with confusing menu and prices. We ended up paying more for the drinks. The atmosphere still nice though. It's a cozy restaurant and the food is tasty. Price is average.

The food and service at Vapiano never disappoints the ambience is a delicate mix of fun music and a lively atmosphere, with the perfect balance of mood lighting and cosy seating to boot. We were excited to see Vapiano had finally reopened their doors after so many months. We indulged in a delightful meal, and were treated to a complimentary Tiramisu, which was divine. Being able to watch the chefs make your meals is always an exciting experience, and you know that every bite that you enjoy is freshly made to your specifications. Staff are always willing to go above and beyond to cater to any dietary requirements, which makes ordering so easy. Their new QR code ordering and payment system has simplified the entire dining in process and was very user friendly and easy to use. We'll definitely be back again soon!

Excellent place. I've been to Vapiano's at 5 times. This time we got the lasagne and the penne bolognese . The pasta was fresh for both dishes and the sauce was tasty but also not to salty. You can see the pasta was made that day and the sauce was fresh. The ambience is chill and I could see myself eating there regularly for lunch if I worked in the city. Really hit and miss with their meals. We had 3 of the 6 dishes of pasta undercooked (which is susprising for home made pasta) but otherwise nice in flavour, 1 garlic pizza without any cheese and burnt with another 2 turning out perfectly. Cocktails with the bar were very good and everyone really happy. Nice dark atmosphere with cozy tables but the lack of back rest on any of the chairs was definitely a shame. I get it's to try to get you to leave after an hour but still. Huge venue with plenty of seats and tables. Feels like a bit of a gamble, which is disappointing for the price as I'd expect a more consistent quality, but a reasonable place to eat.

The concept is really cool and they have managed to create a system that works. The food is prepared in front of you and customisation is pretty easy. The food however doesn’t taste that great. It was my go to place for lunch but the quality seems to have degraded. As a vegetarian I was happy to see a few vegetarian options on the menu and I’ve tried most of them. The tomato-spinach pizza is a cold one but tastes really good with some olive oil. Of the pastas, the least I’m prey was the ratatouille. I had real expectations with that one but it was just like pomodoro with scraps of veggies thrown in.

I've been to Vapianos a couple times now and they never fail to satisfy! Yes, it gets busy and the line gets long, but people don't understand that when you are being served, you watch them cook it all in front of you, and I think that's great! I've worked in hospitality for 10 years now, and was actually raised in our family restaurant, so I understand the stress and pressure from both staff and owners perspective. It's hard to satisfy every single customer, but they all do such a great job! They have your own style. Everything is unique. The food, the drinks, the desserts (which are freaking delicious!). And the fact that they have a glass room centre of the restaurant with chefs inside making pasta and pizza dough literally from scratch, is insane. It's so good. And their staff are so lovely and welcoming. Customer service was definitely beyond. Keep up the good work guys!!!

Vapiano is great for groups because everyone gets their own card which means no awkward splitting of the bill at the end. The food is always good and they are happy to make alterations for you. If you are unhappy with your food you can take it back and they fix it. My husband had the lasagne and it was awful, so he took it back and they gave him a fresh one, and included extra bread and another salad with the new lasagne and he said it was great the second time around. Service is excellent. I would definitely recommend if you want somewhere casual to hang out.

The process of ordering food is strange, ask for help if it's your first time. You get something like a debit card when you enter which you need to give while ordering food at the counter. You need to wait in line for pastas which are prepared instantly based on your choice of pasta or sauces while you get a buzzer while ordering pizzas. You pay at the end based on items loaded on the card. Keep that card safe till the end, they charge $75 if it's lost!

Great atmosphere, ability to pay separately using own cards is the best, more restaurants should adopt this! They don't take reservations for groups of less than 10 people, and when we arrived they told us to sit anywhere, but nearly everywhere was reserved so staff could have helped guide us where was available. The food is cooked in front of you so you know it's fresh, I waited almost an hour in line for 6 people in front of me, so make sure you're not in a rush or order a pizza.

Pretty confused when I walked in and was offered a card first thing. Hostess never really explained how the restaurant works so I was left wondering the upstairs awkwardly reviewing the menus. Didn't take long for me to realise I had to go up and order with the actual chefs. That said, this is a modern Italian restaurant. Perfect for groups with a large contemporary dinning area but also suited for more intimate experience as well. Food was of a high quality could definitely taste the fresh pasta. The slices of bread with complementary balsamic vinegar and olive oil was a very traditional touch. Would recommend for the Friday office lunch, definitely review the pasta menu (chefs are accommodating).

My food come through a little bit salty but I understand this is the sort of small accident that can happen when you have crash made in-front-of-your-eyes food. We went in a group to celebrate a b-day and this proves to be a great place for parties as anyone can select (and pay for) whatever they want without the inconveniences if splitting bills etc. we enjoyed the experience and will repeat the visit sometime soon.

The pasta I had was soooo good, really nice ambience & set up, great options for vegans/vegos. Only issue was the lack of guidance we had as first timers - because it’s not table service, there are different counters for different food (which was easy enough to figure out) and some of the chefs were super nice (the pizza guys!!!) but one of the chefs looked at me like they expected me to know what to do -(similar to how newbies are treated at subway ~ like how they’re almost laughing at u lol) and wasn’t very helpful when I asked questions. But otherwise it was a great experience.

There are lunch deals Monday to Thursday for $12 or so. Plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. I love this place, ambience is good and staff is helpful. There are two entrances one from Flinders lane and other is from Collins st. I recommend this place.

Awesome idea for a restaurant, the cooking of pasta in front of you is intriguing and gives a unique feel to Vapiano. It isn't too expensive, staff are friendly and the Vapiano card payment system is an easy way to keep track of who bought what in group outings. Overall would highly recommend to anyone wanting a fantastic Italian cuisine and friendly restaurant experience.

The atmosphere there is great. The restaurant is not dirty or noisy. Th waiters are very kind and the foods are very delicious. The view is not bad. I recommend pasta at that restaurant

Was here with some friends from Overseas. I love the way it's set up with a little swipe card to get your food, drinks and the like. The food was good and staff very friendly. Great aircon and comfy seating. Open good hours too! Will definitely come back.

My husband and I came to Vapiano last Saturday, It was warmly greeting from staff. We were on the waiting list for 10 minutes, It seemed very busy and I came here very often so I requested for not sharing table because it was our anniversary night. Luckily, a manager came to talked and placed us to our own table. The foods was every good as usual, thank to the guy Justin? or Jason? (sorry i didnt remember the manager name) gave us a Nutella Pizza for our Anniversary night. I was surprised and appreciated it. Even though we had to queued up for long time, but good Job to Vapiano for well organised management.

Pizza are handmade and very good, not too thick and not too thin. Pasta are pre-made too, but cooked to perfection. The queue to order and collect pasta can wait at least 30 mins with only 2 people in front. So better go there in a non-busy time.

Staff were really on point, food was fresh and delicious. My Fusili pasta was a little undercooked but not inedible. Great atmosphere. Highly recommended. Edit: Owner responded and I usually appreciate this, but I felt it necessary to add that although an attempt to cook their pasta al-dente is right in most cases, I have repeatedly had the issue of the Fusili pasta specifically being undercooked. I won't change my star rating because this place is genuinely great but don't use al-dente as a cop out. I'm Italian I know when I'm eating undercooked pasta.

After watching my friends order pasta, I thought I'd chosen poorly by picking pizza. But, oh wow, was I wrong. The pizza was superb and the dining experience enjoyable. Will definitely return. I am removing one star because making a reservation at this place was painful. I called 4 times across multiple days. The voicemail was full and no one ever returned my call. I have always believed that the difference between a good restaurant and a great one is the management and staff. I knew Vapiano flinders lane from Foodie Tour, our host was the young Asian manager, he was a great character to give us a briefly tour about Vapiano, I impressed you guys have more than 200 Vapiano around the world. I came on last Saturday with the tour, but I was so full that afternoon, because Vapiano was our last tour of the day. However, I decided to come back on Monday night with my daughters. The food here was really delicious, lovely cocktails and the space has a great vibe. You guys got my attention so far. Great works.

Good for groups, especially with fussy eaters. Celiacs catered well for here as they can serve risotto that it in contaminated. There can sometimes be long waits and the card system is very annoying, but it’s a nice and casual place.

A friend and I both ordered spaghetti - I choose the pomodoro and she chose a bolognese. Sounds good, right? Sounds like we're in for a treat? We thought so too. Until after waiting a lengthy time at their 'cafeteria-style' kitchen we recieved something quite mysterious. We didn't know it was possible to disguise mashed potatoes as pasta, but Vapiano did a marvelous job doing just that! What a spectacular magic trick!! The pasta honestly had no defining qualities so to speak of - aside from making canned spaghetti look more appetising of course. Don't get me wrong! This place had great atmosphere, and I suppose the ordering style was rather quirky and interesting, however my bet is that the pizza, entres, desserts, and lasagne are much safer options than ordering anything else. I can not stress to you enough how mushy and starchy the pasta was - it had no chewiness and literally disintegrated before my very eyes as soon as I'd lift my fork. The sauce was fine at least... but what use is sauce when the texture of your food reminds you of soggy carpet? I may sound overly dramatic.. and if so... feel free to go to this place at lunch hours and order pasta.... feel free... and then suffer a mouthful of mush!!

Been there twice so far, and both times they managed to forget to add the customisations we ordered. What is the point of having a customisable menu if it turns out just whatever the chef is feeling like? Am unsure if I'd try this place again, rather underwhelmed after the second strike. This s an excellence Italian restaurant, excellent menu with options to add extras to make dishes unique. One of the good this is ordering your food and watching them make it getting to add extra chilli less garlic or whatever you would like to your pasta. When in Melbourne this is one of my favourite places to go. Easy for groups as no splitting bills you get a card and swipe all you food and drinks onto cards and settle on way out. Highly recommend a trip there.

Oh. My. God! Honestly THE best carbonara in Melbourne! Made freshly in front of you, it's a different way to dine, but the experience alone is worth the 5 stars. Everything seemed pre portioned and I couldn't see any wastage except for what the customers couldn't finish. Long story short, if you prefer table service, Vapiano is probably not for you.... But still very worth the visit & $$!

I like the quality of food at a reasonable price, between $20 and $30 a dish of pasta. I like the concept of self service and go to different food stations depending on what you are after. Also makes it easy to meet with friends because you avoid the stress and complication of splitting bills at the end of the meal, each one has a card that can use for ordering food and track all the items that have been consumed and on your way out you pay for what has been checked in your card.

By far my favourite Italian restaurant in Melbourne and by far the best pasta I have ever eaten, and I've eaten alot. Canteena style service ( order at kitchen and watch them make Infront of you ) which is interesting to watch but also means your standing in the que for a while. Family friendly, Date friendly ( delicious desserts ) professional staff and nice, clean amenities. A wonderful place for everyone.

Update 15 June 2019: Come on Vapiano! Only one pasta chef to serve you? The line is tall and thick that I had to wait for 40 minutes to get served, and another 30 minutes for pasta preparation! Update 18 December 2018: 3 stars for not keeping up with service! There is always one Chief who cook your pasta which make things busy and late to cook and design my own custom pasta because the chief doesn’t have time for you to make your dream dish pasta comes true in order to serve other customers in line!
