Comments of Main Street Ryu Japanese Food X Liquor
U.
I wanted to try it so the experience itself was worthwhile. Caught the business not a very busy time and it's nice that there is Japanese music in the background. Both items were nutritious and delicious in the same of both. This place uses paper straws fyi.
D. M.
We had a lovely dinner and walked out full and slightly tipsy after a few of the Sapporo imperial pints. Cool venue with a range of contemporary Japanese dishes and some classics. The nigiri was so fresh. The duck meatballs and spatchcock were something different and delicious all the same
C. W.
Had an absolutely amazing experience. Look we did have to wait in line for about 15 minutes and our food for 15 as well. However, I noted that they already had 3 reservations already present so considering for such a small restaurant, they served us kindly and quite fast! The food was definitely worth the wait! It was my partner and my first time coming to MSR and it was very enjoyable!
Service amazing, food immaculate, great atmosphere, cheap prices for such good quality food! An amazing gem in Perth! Will stop by when I'm in the facinity next! Thank you!~
M. L.
Very yummy food. Of course, pricey end, however worth it for a night out. You might not be full from just the food, different experience from a usual restaurant!
M. T.
Everything was great! The volcano ramen was the highlight. The squid karaage was nice and crunchy and sashimi was fresh and delicious. Service was also superb. However, I just think that a Japanese beer for $21.00 was a bit much. I have been to other Japanese restaurants and alcoholic drinks are not as expensive as this place.

Good vibe, Friendly service. Salmon Taco is interesting with seaweed (Nori) as taco, salmon sashimi, green onions, rice and seaweed salad on the inside. The drink Mrs Yuzu tastes really nice, despite its price. The night menu has changed, here is the updated one.
C. B.
Really enjoyed the food and atmosphere here. The karage sliders were so yum and loved the sake we paired with our dinner. Our waitress was good too however there was one downside. After we finished our dinner, they didn’t clear our plates or ask if we wanted dessert which was a shame as we were having dinner for my birthday. We eventually got up to pay and said we wanted dessert but no one took our dinner plates away or asked if we wanted dessert.
M. T.
Very very good Japanese food in the city, great drink selection and staff service is quick and friendly.. good for a nighttime session with your friends
m. o.
Some good stuff here but others could be improved, like the kingfish prawn sirracha roll. Loved the popcorn cauliflower and the best kingfish carpaccio I've had.
S. S.
Seriously just WOW!
Main Street Ryu, is a restaurant you have to tick off your list and visit. The staff are so amazing and polite, the atmosphere at the restaurant is inviting and and the food is absolutely to die for, at really reasonable price.
Y.
A good spot for lunch! Good katsudon, delicious Udon broth with Katsu chicken served on the side. Udon noodle texture was excellent, great bounce.
I wouldn't recommend the Volcano Seafood ramen, it wasn't particularly tasty and only came with a few small bits of seafood (+ a softshell crab). Noodle texture was below average, and the noodles were in a big sticky clump. The regular 3 chilli's spiciness level is a bit more spicy than shin ramyun at first taste, and builds up to be significantly spicier.
The karaage wings were great after brushing off the thick layer of sea salt. Perfectly marinated like your best karaage, and then great fried wings texture.
Overall we enjoyed our meal and there are plenty of things on the menu that we would be back to try!
r. u.
Came here for lunch around 2pm and its a bit quiet only 2couples had their lunch, i order their famous volcano seafood ramen, good portion , taste good , and fair price too around$21 , the place is cozy and verygood with the service, will back again for sure
H. I.
Great Fusion Japanese Tapa’s restaurant. Tasty, great presentation and a mix of different cuisines into Japanese Food. Good selection of alcoholic beverages as well.
W. W.
Just two words...First class! Have tried a lot of Japanese style restaurants around Perth these past 12 months and have concluded that MSR is simply one of the best! Ordered 8 dishes between the tow of us and our three favorites on the night?...Dragon Rolls, Tooth-Fish and a couple of amazing daiquiris! Will be back!
C. R.
The service was ok but understandable as there was only 1 waitress. Food slightly overpriced for what you get. Kaarage wings were quite bland. Braised brisket taco and shroom taco were really good. Braised short ribs were super nice and tender but was only given half of what you'd expect for a $28 meal. Ramen was pretty average as well. Glad i went but would never return. No wow factor for a $115 meal for 2.
S. K.
Delicious, authentic cuisine with amazing attention to detail and customer service.
E. G.
Really great range and great drinks. I had three menu items: squid karaage, mushroom taco and volcano. Was a great combo and I loved the extra spicy taste perfect balance between heat, spice and flavour with great seafood involved. There were also great drinks alcoholic and non alchoholic
C. R.
Nice little boutique Japanese restaurant. Our favourite was the pork and the green tiramisu. This type kind of restaurant is much more better to enjoy with big group rather than couple. Unless you don’t mind spending as some of the dishes the price is quite dear compare to the portion. Overall the food were nice nice and tasty.
S. C.
The atmosphere is excellent, the Sushi 🍣 samon with avocado is very fresh and delicious. The customer service experience is fantastic with excellent hospitality. Thanks very much.
E. M.
The food here is so yummy! It's all high quality and very authentic. I recommend the Onsen Gyu don which tastes just like what I ate in Japan. I really enjoy the drinks mixed with yuzu syrup which is kind of hard to find in Perth. The interior design is urban Japanese. Service was fantastic.
A. T.
Main Street Ryu had a nice decor (look up when you sit down) and a really cosy atmosphere. The service was fast and the waitstaff were friendly. They had a good list of different types and prices of sake. The food was good but not the best I had in Perth of similar price range.
K. L.
Value-for-money seems to vary widely here. The "8 pieces" of makizushi for $28 are a step up in appearance (picture posted) from regular rolled sushi, but let me ask you: Would you buy two rolls of sushi for $28 from a sushi-stand? The ingredients are no different, so the pricing seems outrageous to me.
The texture of their salmon (pictured) indicates they thaw from snap-frozen. While perfectly safe, it's nowhere near as nice as fresh, and it's not hard to find fresh Salmon in Oz.
The Yaki-Udon that we ordered was probably the best value. The flavour was pretty good, however it didn't really seem like it had been fried, and the sauce was quite oily.
The service was quite strange, it took about 6 minutes, 2 people, and 4 or so conversations to seat us.
J. K.
Just came across here and what a surprise!
We had some amazing level of japanese cuisines
Definitely Deserve 5stars!
R. S.
Very tasty Japanese food (albeit not traditional). We had a great experience, friendly service and great environment for me and my wife to enjoy a nice bite. Highly recommend trying your hand at the nori taco.
E. T.
food was BEST loved it so much, very kind server she was lovely, good food for a reasonable price!!
G. L.
Tried the Volcano ramen for lunch and was surprised by the generous portion for its price. It's tasty but different to the typical ramen and full of seafood including Soft shell crab, prawns, fish and mussels. The staff here are very friendly and attentive however it did take about 15 mins for my order to arrive.
I. K.
Lunch was so good! Even the miso soup was yum! Reasonable price too. Will come back :)
J. T.
Chill, but up tempo atmosphere with a fusion twist on Japanese food. Usually it's dangerous ground to get West-creative with Japanese cuisine but, apart from also having traditional dishes, absolutely nails it with its creative and fun fusion choices. Tapas based food was super smart and goes perfectly with some cold on tap Asahi and a range of other Japanese beverages and video game inspired cocktails. Order the buta pork belly or some kaarage sliders and a beer - see if you can stop at one!
Still loads of surprises the menu has to offer that I can't wait to try on my next visit!
Well priced and friendly staff, really glad i finally tried Main Street.
H. H. C.
The soft shell crab was good. The takoyaki was ok. The chirashi don was disappointing the rice was Not cooked properly could feel the powdery taste. And the price for the don was too Much for four to five pieces of fish. So only three stars
T.
An all round great experience. Nice friendly service and truly tasty food. Will come again.
N. K.
I love this place the salted edamame is so delicious .. food on par with nobu.. exquisitely presented. I just can never work out when they open.. they seem to be closed a lot of times when I walk by
P. W.
Came here with my partner on Saturday night, wasn't crazy busy and we both ordered 59 dollars per person set menu.
Served 1-2 dishes each time then wait for 10-15 mins for another dish. A bit of waiting time between.
Food was ok but the pork belly crispy skin was very very sticky and easily stuck on your teeth.
Anyway, don't really recommend the 59 dollars set, if you calculate the value of the food you got, hmmm. Still hungry anyway.
K. C.
I always come to here just for this amazing chicken dish!!! Delicious 🤤
W.
Simple & Tasty! Lovely cocktails!
M. t. B.
What an experience! So many flavours, so much choice. Bringing a twist on Japanese food, MSR has got you covered if you need a snack or a meal. Whether you are catering for 1 or 100, these guys know how to serve you some great cuisine. Try their Nori-Taco for that little wow factor that you didn't know you needed. Cheers MSR!
L. T.
Couldn't ask for a better experience than here, Amazing food and great service, everyone was so friendly and also helpful with explaining about the dishes that it made it one of the best and enjoyable nights out that I won't forget, Real recommended it.
D. V.
Superbly different. Japanese fusion with unique twists on classic Japanese. plenty of options for veg/vegan. Highly recommend.
M. N.
Amazing ambience, and great food!
s. l.
Great izakaya Japanese tapas! Had the 59 per person where the chef surprises you. Ate till I dropped!! Well worth it.
S. E.
The interior has a late night Tokyo street from about it which was cool. The food was really tasty and creative. Try the nori tacos and the Street fighter inspired cocktails.
E. Y.
Love the service and good food! It's a Japanese tapas restaurant so it's great to have a little bit of everything (if you don't want to commit to just one thing, that is). Lovely cocktails too!
S. B.
Tasty tapas style Japanese. I got takeaway a couple of times, highly recommended!
S. B.
Me and my Brother just had Dinner here and WOW. I don't usually leave reviews but these guys have earned it. Cannot flaw the food, everything was delicious, and the cocktails were absolute supreme. We ordered some small dishes but they were so good we kept ordering more. Very pleasant atmosphere and service was on point. What was supposed to be a quick Thursday dinner turned into a very memorable evening and a great night. Thank You Main Street Ryu, will definitely be back again!
T. A.
Had the Salomon Taco.. was amazing. Always great service. My daughter always loves the sushi rolls at this place.
P. S.
Food tasted amazing however service was slow, due to how busy it was and food was missing off that we ordered but was sorted out. Over all it good.
M. A.
Slightly pricey $21 bowl of seafood ramen, but it was big enough to share between 2 as a 'late night' hearty soup snack, with a side of pork gyoza. Friendly, fast service.
j. l.
I had a really nice lunch here. I took the beef Bento box: decent miso soup, beef was very tender served in a tasty sauce, simple salad, good tofu. The serve of rice was a bit too big.
Modern interior, music not too loud, there were some other customers but not overly crowded (1pm lunch).
Service was very friendly and quick.
Good selection of drinks and food (sushi, shared plates, Bento boxes, curry, noodles...) on the menu.
S. C.
Main Street Ryu is a great Japanese restaurant offering a variety of Japanese food and drink. The service is good and the atmosphere is relaxed inside. I thought the price was ok for the quality of the food and I would return here again for good food later in the evening.
t. C.
Yummm yummm and yummm , food was delicious , I had the Gyudon Taco and squid.
I can't wait to come back and try some other things on the menu ... Arigato gozaimasu
M. P.
Great vibe if you're kinda missing Japan atm. Food was great and Uzu mocktail made my day.
C. C.
Dropped in for dinner with no expectations and were blown away! Better negroni @ $13 than the one we paid $23 @ at qt rooftop bar. Salmon belly tacos, popcorn cauliflower and kingfisher carpaccio outstanding. Service was prompt and professional. Highly recommend.
E. H.
Nice little Japanese tapas restaurant in Perth :)
Enjoyed the food, service and ambience!
L. M.
The best Japanese restaurant I have been to for a very long time. Superb.
A. W.
Good food, great atmosphere and pleasant staff.
K. M.
Fantastic Japanese fusion. I loved the different tastes and the cocktails were wonderful
c. c.
Awesome yummy fresh food, the poke bowl was fantastic. Great sake
S. W.
Very tasty. I had the finger lickin chicken and a chicken salad. The salad was more like chicken sat on a bed of lettuce with a little cucumber and tomato on the side but the chicken was delicious.
A. R.
We have been here quite a few times now, it's always busy, staff are attentive and the food is always good.
Y. S.
Came from Sydney for business trip and had the only seafood spicy Ramen. In Sydney it is often that I felt the ramen was either not enough or not worth the money... But now in Perth I feel almost satisfied although it is not cheap at all
D. C.
We love this place! So many choices of food to cater your dietary requirements..they also have delicious cocktails!
A.
After mourning the loss of Zensaki and the sushi train, these guys came back as MSR with an even better food AND drinks menu to make up for it.
It's been around for a few years now, but they never disappoint. Love the food and vibes here!
A. B.
Had the ramen and karaage sliders, was really good. Partner who is vegetarian had the cauliflower and really enjoyed it, can't wait to come back again! Customer service was excellent.
S. R.
Great food
Super helpful and friendly staff
Not too busy, which was great
Would recommend
K. B.
It was actually the nicest Japanese we’ve had in AGES! We’ll definitely be going back.
D.
This place is amazing. The service is genuine and welcoming, the staff incredibly friendly. We ate here for the first time 4 weeks ago, 4 people, we ordered the feed me menu. Everything that came out was delicious. Everything. And it kept coming out, it was incredible value. The seaweed tacos were all amazing. The skewered lettuce was a surprise favourite, amazing. The selection of beers were amazing, everyone was happy with their beer or wine choice.
We enjoyed it so much I was back there again the other night, which reminded me to do a review. Again, everything about the experience was sensational. Food is amazing, staff were awesome, I'll be back. Regularly.
B. T.
Highly recommended, Good Quality Of Food, Reasonable prices, Friendly Staff
S. C.
It was my first time at this place, and I'll definitely be back! What an awesome restaurant! The food was great, the service was excellent and the atmosphere was really nice.
We were a group of 4 and everybody loved their dishes! We just have good things to say about this experience and we look forward to coming back at Ryu.
I highly recommend this place.
E. K.
Flawless food and at such a good price! Beautiful interior also, perfect for date night or catching up with friends!
R. W.
Great selection of modern Japanese food, good selection of sake and modern cocktail list, reasonable prices with generous portions, waitstaff very friendly and attentive with good covid19 safety/hygiene practices.
E. M.
Amazing food, with lovely service to compliment. Can't go past the quality of the salmon nigiri and the slow cooked ribs. A lovely range of sake, cocktails, and whiskey make it a perfect restaurant. Great for a date or a group gathering. Can't wait to return.
C. C.
Crazy amazing! I had the curry chicken karaage with pinkade and I honestly couldn't have had a better meal
T. G.
Amazing food and perfect service! The arancini balls and pork belly were the highlights! Not to be missed.
C. R.
Yum, food & service always great. Love this place!
D. R.
Really enjoyed the creativity of the chef here. Taco sushi and the lettuce kebab was amazing. Good quality food at very reasonable prices. Great selection of alcohol as well. Also loved the atmosphere/music. Wish they will open a restaurant in Sydney!
G. G.
Great cocktails and delicious food!
A. H.
The service here is genuine and it feels like a family run place. Had the sushi and it was tasty, although probably just "a bit rough around the edges", or, maybe not as refined as the more expensive sushi restaurants. But just as flavourful and portions are generous. Definitely worth a try!
C. B.
Innovative Japanese-fusion restaurant with exceptional service. We had the 'let the chef feed you' option for $59/head, and we could not believe how much food we were given. Everything was beautifully presented, fresh, and delicious. We will definitely be back.
A. A.
Amazing food and service. Every dish was made to perfection. 100% Recommend everyone to try out the tacos
E. S.
I've had a couple of really tasty food items from here, but my favourite has to be the 'Red-Back' Soft Shell Crab Sushi Taco - yum! Can't go wrong here really, the interior is clean and well decorated, and the staff are attentive and friendly.
K. T.
Delightful combination of fusion Japanese food with a great selection of drinks! It was rather crowded on a Saturday evening, had to make do with bar seats which made sharing of the food hard. That said, service was friendly and prompt. Enjoyable meal and recommended!
T. M.
From start to finish this resturant impressed. It's a tight squeeze but has a brilliant feel to the place. They just introduced a refreshed menu so we tried a couple of the new dishes. They were amazing. The Japanese beer wal also very complimentary of the food. If you try anything on the menu it must be the Volcano ramen. If you are jot into hot food(spice) ask for the very mild but it is just jam packed with flavour. The tacos are also treat, certainly a must have. The beef one is the best. Save yourself for the finale though. The bourbon choc brownie is to die for. All in all we would be back there tonight if we could. Happy dining.
Possibly one thing the note purely for the owners...you don't have any hand towels in the bathroom for after washing your hands. Other than that I have absolutely no complaints. The staff were very excited and descriptive with their enthusiasm for the food.
M. C.
Consistently excellent food. Try the Emperor Roll.
M. F.
My wife and I came here for dinner after seeing such great reviews and photos of delicious looking food.
But unfortunately we weren't in the receiving end of 5 stars.
The good - the nori soft shell crab taco, these we delicious and our first meal so we had high hopes. If I was in the vicinity I would probably get these again although slightly pricey for a single taco.
The alright- next came the crispy pork and soft shell crab. Both alright nothing special here the crab came with sweet chili sauce that seemed out of the bottle not freshly made and for a Japanese restraunt to have no soy on the tables was also a bummer.
The pork was crispy skinned which was a pleasure and was cooked well. The flavours were alright but we expected better.
The Bad - miso toothfish collar I've had this before from other restraunts and it comes out buttery smooth and melt in your mouth. ours came out chewy and tough plus there were leftover cartilage. Unfortunately this was the last dish and it was a bummer to a great start.
M. M.
The food was definitely the highlight. Great environment too. Service can be improved but for a new restaurant and bar, we were very impressed. Definitely worth a visit. The karaage chicken sliders were delicious.
M. M.
Food was great but service was a bit slow and the dishes/ alcohol was pricey
J. P.
Food is good, mostly priced well. Dinner is better than lunch, highly recommend group dinner "combos". Japanese fusion flavours interesting. Like all of the crab dishes. Asahi on tap is a winner too.
Y. J. C.
Good, well seasoned food. Excellent cocktails. Prices are reasonable for a cbd japanese restaurant:)
M. V. B. C.
Great atmosphere, quick service and a nice menu of interesting flavours. But it is not as cheap as Google makes it seem. Check the menu before going. They recommend 3-4 dishes for a couple. If you include one drink per person, the bill ends up coming close to $100. Not bad for a place so original, but not a "$" kind of place. Also, if you are not a fan of wasabi let them know, as some of the sashimi dishes have quite a lot of it and the menu makes no mention of it. Recommend the cocktails, the tacos and the cod.
A. Z.
This was the best, freshest sushi I have had in a long time. The Nigiri was perfection, and the Ryan roll was superb. Would 100% recommend. Service was friendly and fast.
J. A.
Decent Japanese food from the establishment formally known as Zen Saki. Decor is modern & nice, and the service was friendly. Food was enjoyable, & was especially nice to see a restaurant outside of Tokyo serve tasty burdock root chips. Reasonably priced food, and a good selection of drinks.
A. H.
Food was beautiful.
Definitely a go to place from now on
A. C.
Great food. I would recommend the chocolate cocktail.
Staff are friendly and the place is nice.
D. “. L.
fantastic friendly service. delicious food. and you definitely get your moneys worth!!
T. R.
Yummy Japanese tapas, very quick service. Tuna tataki is highly recommended. We had 4 tapas and 2 beer for 70$ cant complain. We'll be back
R.
This is a modern-style Japanese restaurant that looks great and serves up-market Izakaya-esque dishes (you could almost consider it Japanese tapas). It's centrally located which is handy for heading to events before or after, and the service is friendly (although we did wait a short while for someone to notice we required drink refills).
We had Edamame (coated in miso salt which was amazing, never had that before), gyoza (very nice, but I've yet to encounter a bad one), 5pcs of Tuna Nigiri (very soft and easy to eat, temperature of the rice was perfect, 9/10 fantastic), beef gyudon "taco" (the taco is a tempura seaweed shell with sushi rice and toppings which gives you the flavours of sushi in the form of a taco, an unusual combo but I absolutely loved it), the beef ribs (3 pieces which was a very small dish but the meat and sauce were delicious), and a green tea tiramisu (I think I actually prefer it to 'proper' tiramisu, very nice).
Prices are a little high for what you get but that's fairly standard for Perth (can't be compared to an actual Izakaya obviously), and it was all fantastic quality so we were very happy overall and will definitely be going again in the future.
A.
Came here for their Valentine's menu, and was completely blown away. Some of the best food I have ever tasted, and the staff were all extremely friendly and accommodating. Would definitely recommended to anyone interested
B. H.
Had a early beer & tapas, bit disappointing.
Staff didn't know anything about Japan. Rice in Nigiri was still warm so wouldn't stick together and fell apart on every piece.
Carpaccio was average.
Beer was cold.
Try Dainty Dowager instead.
