Comments of Shy John Brewery & Yum Cha
H. I.
This place has to be one of the best tasting Chinese restaurants in Perth. Been coming back here countless times and each time it has been the same great tasting and consistent food. They now do crab 🦀 as well here but it was around $125 per kg. So quite pricey for mud crab so declined and ordered our little feast. Gave us a complimentary fried ice cream as well as it is somebody’s birthday 🥳 on Valentine’s Day ❤️

Off for a night in the Fringe festival my wife booked this place for a dinner. From having a $5 beer, spirit of wine down stairs to the awesome food up stairs in the restaurant it was a great experience. Has a $5 rum which i loved so bought a bottle the next day, The Dead mans fingers spiced rum.
We had the Duck san choy bao, Gyoza, Sui Mai and spring rolls.
Mains where the Kong Po Chicken with great chilly flavors that got my friends hiccups going . This tells us the chili is good.
Sweet and sour pork and saltfish/Chicken rice which tasted so good.
So many times we have walked passed but not stopped here but we will be back for sure .
Staff extremely friendly and helpful . Thanks for making the start of the night a good one.

Good food and service with no wait compared to other Dimsum in Northbridge. Limited in dimsum menu is most likely why but can not complain. Nice view and ambience. Quiet enough so you can chat and catch up over some food and drinks.
T. D.
Fantastic service. Everyone smiling and happy to greet you and say hello. We went for dinner with two kids and five adults. Our toddler was given her “own” special plastic bowl and cutlery. We ordered lots of dumplings, squid, duck was amazing, satay Skewers, san Chou bao and fried rices. All very tasty and fresh and didn’t take long at all to be served. We tried Summer ale and a grape beer. Not bad at all. Very impressed and definitely recommend you give it a visit. Great location in Yagan Square with grass and water near by for kids to muck around.
A. C.
Rated this place 4 out of 5; 5 for the beer and 3 for the food.
The beer is very unique and well done. Mixing western and Asian flavors to come up with new styles and they are delicious.
The food on the other hand is nothing special. The duck rolls had minuscule pieces of duck and the dumplings were average.
M. B.
Great modern style Dimsum reasonable prices, nice place, deep fried prawn dumplings amazing 9/10
R. M.
I went there to try their craft beers and was pleasantly surprised with how much care was taken with the menu to blend an oriental touch in every type of beer and cocktail offered. I tried a cocktail while chatting with friends and it was fantastic, they bar offered me a bai ju and dragon fruit cocktail that was not even on the menu... Delicious. I'll be back to try the yum cha next.
Been back twice now for cocktails and their unique craft beer... Nice!!
J. T.
Amazing staff and location, chill but not too chill and great after work drink vibes and prices. Great selection of local brewed for amazing prices. Salt and pepper squid to die for. Justin and his staff are really attentive and I can’t wait to try their dinner service. Will return 10/10.

Planned to go to the newly opened Tim Ho Wan, but the queue would probably took an hour. Instead we headed to this restaurant and bar in Yagan Square. The dim sum menu was quite surprising not commonly found in other yum cha house, like truffle scallop dumplings, black sesame bao, cheesy mushroom and chicken pie etc. Taste good though the price was a bit expensive. They also serve Funk Cider beer and cider, would definitely try their platters next time at night.
L. R.
Wow...food excellent, service also very very good. You pay for what you get, and so whilst the food wasn't exactly cheap, you definitely taste the difference. Great spot for a foodie or someone with an experienced pallet
D. C.
We had our end of year work function at Shy John Brewery and Yum Cha.
The food, drinks and service were absolutely perfect.
Thanks so much for an amazing night

Heard all the fuss about this place so was excited to give this place a go. Beautifully designed restaurant, very friendly and attentive staff every single time they came around to the table, always with a smile. Food was good but wasn't up to my expectations with all the fuss I've heard about, although you can experience some "unique" dim sum dishes you would not otherwise find in other dim sum places in Perth, such as the super cute custard bun. We were seated all the way at the end corner, the music was WAY TOO LOUD that we struggled to hear each other in our conversations. Music is a lovely way to add to the atmosphere in any restaurant but when its so loud that you struggle to hear the person across the table from you, it just becomes annoying. Considering the $$ versus the taste of the dishes we've had (comparing to other dim sum places in Perth), this is definitely not my 1st place to go to in Perth for dim sum. But if customer service is your priority in experience, definitely recommend it :)
M. W.
Delicious n authentic food, big portion. Cocktail average, pricey. Own brewery beer just alright. Staff was busy but friendly. Nice location.
M. C.
A great new place open in Perth city - have to try it - good value excellent quality food that comes out from the kitchen quite fast! Must try the duck - great! Nice friendly polite staff providing excellent service
S. B.
Fantastic! Friendly service and delicious dumplings. Our waiter, Chad, was extremely welcoming, friendly and made our lunch experience very enjoyable. We will back soon.
J. W.
Good service, great food, always friendly people and happy to eat here!
I have eaten here before but never reviewed this place. Its a winner. Great central location, friendly staff, and great fresh food!
They are licensed so you have plenty of drinks to choose from, and of course they are a Brewery, so plenty of beers on the menu!
It is a casual place to dine, share drinks and food with friends, and enjoy some decent Yum Cha!
You can sit outside as well and bring your pet along, so it caters for all.
Great tucker for lunch, and a good cider on the menu!
M. S. (.
Great food, quick service and large drink selection of beers on tap, cider and wine. The sweet and sour pork and lemon karage chicken were a standout!
M. W. (.
There's pretty much no other place in Perth where you can get unique Asian inspired beers and traditional dim sum flavours with a modern twist.
A clean and cosy atmosphere perfect for a younger crowd who want to avoid the shouting "uncle" on the next table. Good tunes are playing constantly too at a comfortable volume.
Perhaps a little on the pricier side than your average dim sum but well worth it for premium ingredients and service.
Did I mention the beer? I'm not sure how they have done it but their brews are somehow new and unique yet nostalgic. The "forbidden potion" tastes like the best wheat beer and the heartiest bowl of rice at the same time. A winner for sure.
C. R.
I’ve got to say I’ve had my doubt about this place but then I’ve quickly changed my mind.
Went here for dimsum at lunch time. It’s probably not for everyone’s liking and not much choices like other yum cha restaurants across the road.
It’s an ala carte style but we found them fantastic. Really tasty and super yum. We kept ordering double for what we’ve had as we couldn’t help ourselves and we glad we did it.
J. A.
Cool industrial feel to this place and some quality beer on tap. The food looked good as it went passed, but didn't eat on this occasion. Will be back for another try
B. M.
Anniversary dinner with my loved one thought we would try this little gem. Definitely was not disappointed as Chad took our order and gave us some history on the story of shy john.
The food came out fast, fresh and hot and was bloody amazing. Do yourself a favor and give this place a try!
P. M.
Caught up with my family here while i was over from Melbourne. Staff are lovey, food was even better and they have a great beer range. Love the Yum Cha and Brewery mix, what a great idea. We will return
D. V.
Really good food and generous portions! Staff really interested in sharing knowledge of Chinese culture and talked with us for 10 mins about their special wine
D. G.
Great place to start off a night in town! $5 beers and $5 rums lays a nice bed for some dumplings to lay on before you head out on an adventure with some mates.
Anything from the beer mates menu satisfies along with a $5 spiced rum or a "grape distance" schooney.
The staff here have always been so friendly and helpful to me even when busy. Nothing but smiles and banter from them.
5 stars for the good service!
T. j.
Had a great Christmas lunch there, had to tell the kitchen to stop send food out as the banquet was too much. Absolutely delicious.. 😋
C. S.
We arrived late in the lunch sitting on a Sunday and the food and service could not be faulted. Beers were good (not great) but were still tasty and adventurous (e.g black rice red ale). Steam buns, squid ink noodles, and roast pork were standouts.
C. K.
I don't think this place can get any better. Firstly the staff a great and greet you with a smile. Very quick, attentive and great service. Customer service can truly break or make a dinning experience. The food is outstanding and you can taste that they are using the fresh and good quality produce. I love dim sum and this is one of the best places in Perth. They also do a mean cocktail.
M. S.
Went for quick bites and a drink. The food and atmosphere was ok.
G. A.
Really nice dumplings with beer brewed on the premises. With Beyonce playing. They break all the rules and results in an amazing place. And the service was great (was in a wheelchair)
B. T.
Had a catch-up with the girls here tonight and the staff were lovely and the service was fast. The food was delicious and hot when it was served. Reasonable priced food and drink menu.
R. B.
Amazing food, great cocktails, lovely atmosphere, fantastic staff
L. B.
Great food, every dish was perfection. Amazing and friendly service with a nice vibe.
D. S.
Great location, sweetest staff member ever, loved the wine and prawn dumpling tray, our squid was a bit oily, perhaps just unlucky as it looked better on other tables. Thought the place looked a bit unclean...
A. H.
Great place for a group dinner. Service was a bit slow but it suited us as we didn’t want to be rushed. Smiling and helpful servers. With their various specials that evening, dinner was a good deal. The food was tasty, although the dim sum choices were maybe not the highest quality. The mains to share were great though. Reasonable quantities as well. The one thing that the restaurant could do is put soft coverings/decorations on the walls because voices from several tables bounced off the walls behind us, which was extremely annoying.
G. W.
The beers here are amazing - their surprising flavours do not overpower the beer.
The food was tasty. The dim sum platter had four different dumplings, and I thought the scallop/prawn truffle dumpling was the best.
The service staff could use a little more training. They were polite but left a little to be desired.
Overall Shy John was a good experience and I'll be back to try more beers and dumplings.
C. G.
The Food was perfect. We had sp/rolls, dumplings, san Choy Bao....... perfect amount. So fresh. Melt in the mouth experience. The service was excellent. Friendly and reliable. We could not speak more highly of our evening out. C & L.
K. B.
Private & Relaxing... Great place to unwind at the end of the day... Or a great place to enjoy lunch or dinner... Great for dining alone, also great for groups..!! I ordered a pint of beer, it was an excellent atmosphere, quiet, though nice....!!! I've posted several photos of Shy Johns that you can see in My Profile under the label of Shy Johns... #SUPPORTSMALLBUSINESSES

Fantastic yum cha and cocktails. We had pre-Fringe show dinner here and will be back again. Plenty of servers meant lots of friendly service!
Our cocktails were delicious and our dim sum came out super quick! The steamed dumplings were plump and flavourful, the squid tentacles were so lightly battered and perfectly cooked, and we had the duck San Choy Bow - the 4 dishes were more than enough for the 2 of us, they were great servings. Looking forward to our next visit!
D. o. P.
The fried rice was excellent. I wouldn’t order pork belly again(maybe I don’t like the Chinese way of cooking pork belly. They don’t seem to cook it enough, I’ve experienced it before. I feel you can’t overcook pork belly too easily) I’d probably go again. The san choi bow v good. The service is pretty good. However I asked for a lot of vegetables in my sweet and sour pork. I was told their would be no vegetable at all, but then there was, some ?
Edit—————-I’ve been back twice.
The food is very good here and so is the service
L. H.
Came for drinks on a Saturday night! Had the beer platter, Shanghai spiced rum and roku gin! Always fun to get a beer platter, the cocktail is well balanced and the gin is beautifully served with premium tonic! Sat at the bar and enjoyed watching the Bartenders doing their things. It was really busy and I can see security walking around ensuring people are seated 👍🏻 So Glad the restaurants and bars are opened!
B. H. G.
I really like the idea of dumplings and beer. It makes for a nice casual place to catchup with friends where you can snack on dumplings and wash it down with some beers. I find the food to be pretty good. Portions are decent. They have a tasting flight for beers also which is great. One thing i still think can be improved is the service. While the staff are certainly friendly enough everything seems to be a tad slow.
J. R.
Amazing meal. Ordered salt and pepper squid tentacles, special prawn dumpling, kongpo chicken, pork sambal rice and steam Vege in oyster sauce, food was full of flavor and steaming.
Kongpo chicken is definitely made for people that like spice, we absolutely loved it.
Beer was nice and cold, staff were very friendly. Will definitely go back and recommend you to go too.
M. C.
Had such a great meal, super delicious, we were especially happy with the Kung Pao Chicken and the smoked chicken. Loved the Berry hot cocktail. Our waiter, Chad, was wonderful, we all agreed he made the experience for us. It's also great to see companies using older people to wait the tables, we were shown such attention to detail and consideration from Chad! Thanks for a wonderful evening!
A. T.
Enjoyed the dim sum here... Some very interesting and beautiful dumplings. The looks far outweigh the flavour but all in all pretty solid. I think you pay for the look. I would definitely eat there again, but I think there are better spots to eat yum cha. Definitely worth a look and great spot for some food pics... I didn't try any of the beers as I was so hungover and had to work later .. but that's for the next time.
C. S.
Came here on a Friday evening (without a booking) and expected it might be slow - we were so pleasantly surprised! Got a table in a quiet spot outside upstairs (we avoided downstairs where they do the street food style, it was much busier), food came in record time and was really great. Highly recommend the soup dumplings and the lemon karaage chicken. Will be back!
A. L.
Very cool and new place for a quiet meal! Fair prices too! Absolutely delicious food!! Can tell it's made well usually I have a very sensitive stomach but didn't feel at all sick. Cocktails were amazing!! Everything beautifully presented!! And awesome clean toilets!! Haha 😁
J. G.
It was a very busy night and we had booked, but we were seated in the downstairs bar area which we did not like and the staff saw we were not happy so they arranged for us to be moved upstairs which was really nice of them. From there the evening just got better. The waitress recommended the cubed beef and lamb cutlet dishes, they were superb. The staff were really great and the food was excellent. Definitely be going again 😋😋

EDIT - after my last review I was contacted by Shy Johns with a lovely email. We have since returned twice and enjoyed lovely meals and service on both visits. We will continue to return and are glad we didn't let our one experience be our last. Amazing satay!
ORIGINAL REVIEW - Sadly service wasn't slow it was non existent. A rare night out ruined, we booked early in the week and were really looking forward to a nice meal . We waited an hour and ask twice for service and still nothing. Left without even eating. Disappointing considering we even got up from our table to ask to order! Better service in the food court!!
We dined on Saturday Sept 7th, our booking was at 6.45pm. We arrived on time and were seated and left. No one came to take a drinks order and after 20mins the table next to us (who we didnt know) got up and asked to order drinks. We managed to stop their wait person and order drinks. At 7.30 we asked if we could order meals as we had a concert to attend and were told yes right away. At 7.45 an hour after we were seated we gave up and left. Paid for our drinks on leaving and there was no apology.
O.
Best chilli pepper squid tentacles in Perth. Hands down. Tasty food, staff were quite efficient, they checked on our table very often. The menu do dinner was interesting. We had 3 side dishes and lotus rice with duck. All were great, the lotus rice dish did take quite a while to come out though. It's a big dish, good flavour, definitely a serving between at least 2-3 people. Shy John is definitely worth a visit for the squid tentacles!
G. G.
Can't get enough of this place. Lovely food and service. Heaps of variety and everything is cooked to perfection.
J. M.
I really really wanted to give Shy Johns a higher rating but unfortunately the service left a little to be desired.
Food was great (dinner) can highly recommend the beer tasting board (at $14 it's great value) but we had to wave at a waiter whenever we wanted anything (like water).
I will be back and hopefully they will have worked out the kinks.
L. O.
Enjoyed the experience got carried away and ordered far too much food but they gave us boxes to takeaway. Dragon tasting glasses of 6 beers good idea. Prosecco served in old fashioned nipple glass was good too. The mid week set meal specials seemed popular good value. Down side was music horrendously loud so could not chat to my friend without yelling or ask waiters about each dish . We didnt want it all to come out at once but no one can hear what you are saying or asking so it did arrive virtually all at once as they dont have the trolley system there.
W. M.
This is the best bar to go to if you just want drinks bar peron was very nice door peron was very nice there was 8 of us and we had a great night .thankyou for having us we will be back 😃🥰
A. G.
Wait staff who know the menu & will offer their suggestions for you and your group of asked. Delicious smoked chicken and octopus dish not too mention the dumplings. Fantastic dining experience we had!
M. 6.
Charming little establishment. Great wine list and an amazing variety of top notch drinks and food to choose from.
Bar Tender new his stuff with personality plus, made the night a very pleasurable experience.
I'll definately be returning
M. “.
This is obviously a cool new place but it is a bit overpriced. Food was good but not amazing. Great san choy bow. Nice steak cubes. Nice dumplings but not the best in Perth. You can get better bang for your buck with yum cha elsewhere in Northbridge. Great atmosphere though, especially at night.
E. d. J.
Amazing service! Great food and awesome cocktails. 1 star off because they had run out of a lot of things but it was past 9pm so probably our own fault. A great experience overall.
M. M.
Owner is friendly, patient and accommodating, staff are also very attentive and food is wonderful and very reasonably priced. Only suggestion is to block off the outside area to stop randoms from wandering in past you from Yagan Square while you're are trying to eat. I suggest booking to secure a good table. Will definitely return.
J. B.
Good beers; food was a good selection of standard yum cha dishes done in the usual way at slightly higher than usual price. Dishes came out VERY staggered (rice 15 minutes after duck), but great service otherwise.
S. R.
The Kung Po chicken was super spicy, Cantonese beef amazing and pork bao buns divine 👌 attentive staff and great place to dine.
J. T.
Lack of trolleys is the only complaint. The dim sum is better than most places in Perth; don't be put off by the welcoming-to-white-people vibe. The beer and cocktails are whatever, the yum cha is good enough to stand alone. Prices are higher but so is the quality. Yum cha veterans will find something to love here. Give it a go.
S. K.
Nice restaurant, looks great, friendly staff, and great service. Food was good. But, if your're after a real "dim sum" experience, this place isn't it. There's no cart that comes around and you have to order from the menu.
V.
I was slightly put off at first, walking towards the establishment and all i could smell was some very strange, almost heinous fishy smell. I overcame this and got my main man to put in an order as he is a bit of an expert when it comes to asian cuisine. Squid tentacles, dumplings, flour rolls, beers, the works. This all went down a treat. Would recommend for a long lunch for sure.
T. P.
The only reason I've given four stars instead of five is I've still got a lot to discover here. The beers are all delicious and pair well with the menu items I've tried, the sous vide char siu is utterly divine as are the truffle and scallop dumplings. Today for the first time I tried the black sesame dumplings and they were a wonderful 'mmmmmm' moment for me, definitely having them again.
C. M.
Great location with a nice view over Northbridge. Haven't tried the yum cha, but wouldn't do so here given it isn't a traditional yum cha restaurant. The tea smoked chicken was absolutely divine... And the Cantonese steak also lovely. Service was impeccable - thank you Snow!
S. E. G.
Went for dim sum only. Great service from staff. Food was tasty but obviously pricer than other places. Still worked out at under $20 p/person and we ordered drinks and 8 or 9 dishes.
B. F. P. (. f. P.
This has become our favourite modern style yum cha in Perth for weekday work lunchtimes. Great pot stickers, mushroom and pork siu mai, extra naughty batter squid and char siu bao. Service can be a little slow but we noticed when we had more at the table we got stuff faster
s. b.
The food was pretty good just the right amount to prepare us for the marathon at the new museum and they take the entertainment card too.
m. s.
Service is a lot better than when they opened, food is really good, some meals took a long time to come out. Over
40 mins. But it was ok. Beers are good. Not sure where they are brewed, but they taste good.
P. L.
Outdoor area is amazing with a view of Northbridge.
Food is great and craft beers are so delicious!!
Price is il line for what you expect.
There's plenty of cheap yum cha, if you're looking for something different here you are.
Definitely coming back!!
R. B.
Really nice food with good service in a bar setting in the heart of Yagan Square.
M. W.
I had lunch on 07/01/18. Fresh & delicious well presented dim sum. Refreshing beer, good for a hot midday lunch drink. I like the environment & conducive for casual lunch.
S. R.
John at the bar was who made our experience here a memorable one. He was so friendly, helpful and super knowledgeable. We loved our experience tasting the craft beers. Thanks!
S. D.
Great place for Dim Sum/Yum Cha
Good service and fresh dumplings
J. D.
Great place, friendly staff. Was nice and quiet both times I went. Would definitely recommend for people looking for an enjoyment time with friends or family.
J. b.
Best prawn/scallop truffle dumplings in Perth !!! And the 5 different types of beer paddle doesn’t too bad either , awesome location in the middle of Perth city and Northbridge
K. P.
Food was good and fast to come out... Drinks were slow, had to cancel last round as waited too long. We were in bar area downstairs. Only 1 bartender on duty and he was serving food and doing drinks to table service.
A. J.
Shyjohn food is a fusion to suit western palates, not the authentic asian cuisines. The signature peking duck pocket for entree ain't worth ordering. Would commend on the service was pleasant n lively.
J. Y.
Delicious and generous serves
G. F.
Some great tap beers and you get 3 dumplings for $1 before 6pm with a tap beer. Small funky bar at Street level
Upstairs more a restaurant with some amazing food
F. H.
Amazing. Great dim sum. Fast attentive and friendly service. Old favourites and fantastic different new dishes ❤️ loved it here and will be back to try the ones that got away.
K. M.
This place has beeb amazing, we just dropped in with 12 people and we were accommodated well.
Food, service & drinks were incredible, we'll definately be coming back!!
Thanks guys!
K. B.
Delicious food, drinks as well as great service. The signature pan dumplings were fantastic
L. P.
Enjoyed the tasting beer paddle: interesting flavors. The signature black tofu was really good and carrying and friendly service.
R. W.
Food service was lovely and fast. Food was delicious and each with their unique taste.
Can’t wait to go back and try more dishes!!!
J.
What a cool place to hangout! Really tasty meals, great variety of drinks on tap and super friendly staff. Some really good views of old Northbridge.
C. H.
Great Staff, very accommodating. Beautiful food and cheap drinks could ask for more on an evening out
G.
Not very impressed with the food and the service. People were quite friendly however I thought this place was more like fine dining place but the service was too slow and food wasn't great.
L. L.
In love with their tempura mushrooms. But a lot of fried food. Once our rice came out last which made for a disappointing dining experience.
A. S.
Nice food and service, interesting beers and tasty cocktails. Remember to check downstairs first if they look closed!
T.
Food fine for the price. Service was rushing us out of the door after we finished eating.
T. S.
Great food & reasonable prices, but lamentable service.
M. B.
Popped on the spur of the moment, on our way to the theatre. Was greeted by a wonderful, friendly staff member. Nothing was too much trouble for him. Thank you
R. T.
Good fusion food with wide range of craft beers to choose from. Great for groups but can be crowded at peak hours.
K. E.
Best Singapore Asian food.
A.
Better than Tim Ho Wan, not as good as Bam Bam Boo. Would have been 4 star but had to wait 30 mins for 2 dishes.
S. W.
Great place , quick service, but food can take a little time to come out. Chinese tapas style food, very tasty tho.
A. B.
Dim sum was delicious! We sat outside and got great service, the place had a fun vibe too.
R.
5$ schooners at happy hour ... dumplings are so good only - 10$ with a house beer
m. t.
Impeccable service, interesting menu and craft beers on tap, prime and convenient location.
J. M.
Honestly some of the best service i have had in perth. The food is great and so is the beer. Just a great night out.
g. b.
Food was very nicely presented service was good...no complaints

I'd rather go when there's not many customers. The meal is all great. Friendly staffs.
E. K.
Best Yum Cha I've ever had! Quality food lovely people

Consistently excellent food, particularly the squid and the meat cubes. Yum! Cha.

(Translated) The location is very special, it is a very high-class Chinese food, and the taste is comparable to the star hotel. Prices are also relatively expensive, but they should all be value for money. It was because the black gold shrimp dumplings were famous. This time, I happened to encounter the yumcha experience package. It is estimated that the menu is not fixed. The one we have eaten is very good, the materials are very good, the quantity is enough, and the taste of the key dishes is very good. There are also homemade wines to try.
It’s just that the Perth people don’t have much money. The few people who come here feel that we probably only have to come back when we need to do it ourselves.

We ordered shrimp Shumai, Saint Rattan and craft beer.
Shrimp Shumai is plentiful and delicious.
The amount of sun rattan is also large and this is enough for one person

海老シュウマイはぷりぷりでおいしい。
