Comments of Tansawa Modern Japanese

Absolutely Amazing! The staff were so friendly and attentive, The venue is clean, tastefully decorated with ambient surrounds but most importantly the food was magnificent! Beautifully presented, extremely tasty and larger portions than you'd expect for Japanese cuisine. Also a great selection of drinks and sake. We will definitely be back! Oishii desu!!

Surprisingly good Japanese restaurant - bit of a little gem. It’s definitely a good alternative to the crowded restaurants that you find in the cbd when you want a little bit more space and quiet. The food is tasty and quite authentic, the staff are friendly. The vibes of the restaurant aren’t fantastic but it’s not terrible, and there are quite a few tables so getting a place isn’t too big an issue. Loved the eggplant and the black cod - if you want a bit of a different experience with Japanese food then this is a place to give a shot!

Environment: walk up stairs, and go into the self-service hotel. Modern Japanese dinning setting. 7/10
Service: shortage of staff. Need to ring bell to call staff. Staff were polite, gentle and attentive. Waiting time for food was acceptable. 7/10
Food: average presentation, like home cook. Small portion. Over-priced for some dishes. A lot people ordered sashimi and eye fillet steak. It's better try their signature dishes for new comers.
- Japanese Tea, $3.5pp: served very hot. The tea bag is larger than other restaurants.
~ Carpaccio, $16: 6 thick slices of sashimi fish with good quality in simple sauce. Garnish with a pepper slice for each piece only. 7/10
~ Prawn Tempura, $27/6pcs: prawns were cooked just right. Batter wasn't thick. 7/10
~ Spicy Creamy Crab, $26: too over-priced as not much crabmeat. A rip-off. Only creamy sauce. Taste was ok 3/10
~ Spider Maki- Zushi, $20/6pcs: sounds reasonable, but maki- zushi was thinly cut- <1cm height. The sauce helped to hold the shape. Need to improve rolling technique. Only half of the soft-shell crab in the dish. Mushy rice 4/10
~ Chocolate Fondant with Matcha Ice Cream, $14: it's a mud cake. Over-cooked. 5/10

First time I visited this place I was gutted they had no wagyu beef, the amazing lady told me that she wasn't happy with the quality from the suppliers so didn't accept it. Oh well, I decided to try a few other dishes instead.
The place was not busy as we were first in the doors at opening. We were greeted by a very friendly and helpful lady. She sat us down and explained what the majority of the dishes were and recommended drinks that would compliment them. The wait for the food was just about right, I didnt know what to expect really so when it came out I was pleasantly suprised.
After finishing the lady told me she may have more wagyu in on the Tuesday.
So on rolls Tuesday and I come back on my own. She recognised me straight away and sat me down. I asked her about the grade of beef used, she asked the chef and told me it was A9 grade....for $75 this was a bit dubious but I wanted to try it. Arriving after 18:00 there were a few other guests but still the waiting time for my food was satisfactory. I have heard of the term 'foodgasm' before but never truly experienced it untill I had my first mouthful of the wagyu. WOW.
Been raving about it to the rest of my ship mates, and I returned on Thursday for another helping....only to find out they are shut on a Thursday.
So came back tonight (friday). Met by the same kind lady, seated amd served with all professionalism again.
Wish I could stay in Australia a little longer just to come back.
Restaurant look 8/10
Customer service 10/10

So glad we found this lovely restaurant. Food was delicious and service was outstanding. Thank you to the kind waitress who let us practice our bad Japanese with her. We will definitely be back!

I rarely rate a place so highly but Tansawa deserves it.
We had booked but neglected to pre-order the degustation dinner that we thought was interesting and well-priced.
It wasn't a problem. The dishes all came even if not I the order listed in the menu.
Every single dish was beautifully plated and, more importantly, was delicious.
We had a dish of scallop and beef tataki, sashimi, tempura prawns, sushi, black cod, fillet beef, a miso soup with tofu, and a delightful and refreshing yuzu sorbet that perfectly rounded off a wonderful meal.
Service was superb and we would be happy to go back.
Tansawa offers a range of sakes, wine, cocktails, and spirits.
Credit cards are accepted and you might be able to find free street parking nearby after 6 p.m.
There are several paid car parks nearby too.

This little gem is awesome🙏🏻 Japanese food done well, very spacious, friendly service and quality ingredients! Will be back

Great dinner - every dish looked and tasted amazing!

Celebrated my anniversary and service was was excellent and food was delicious! The creamy spicy crab is scrumptious and was my favourite dish of the night. I would have accompanied it with a nigiri since the dish has a very rich flavour. Dessert was so good I wanted to order a second dish for myself only!
Lychee martini was exquisite and the green bottle of cold sake had a delicious citrusy flavour.
Highly recommended

Hard to fault. The staff were lovely and the food was excellent.
The sashimi in particular was a stand-out (of course!), but everything was very good. There’s just something about Japanese food. It always feels clean and good.
The eggplant had an excellent sweetness to it, and though it came across as the one meal I could prepare at home, it was done to a high quality and presentation.
They also whipped up some children’s sushi for my daughter, which was appreciated
M. L. B.
Everything in this place is amazing and scrumptious!!! The food is to die for! Especially the quality of service we received! Will highly recommend this restaurant! Definitely will come back 😊
A.
Highly recommended. We went for the degustation which was no longer available however the owner set us up with a selection of the favourites. In the end the price was a little bit higher than what she originally advised, but the quality of the food and service made up for any disappointment. Sashimi was the highlight as the salmon literally melts in your mouth.
We also tried the Sake tasting plate. We are normally not a fan of Sake but this selection made us see it in a new light.
Service was excellent and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Only suggestion would be to bring back the degustation. We will be back!

Great food.nice atmosphere and friendly staff.food is fantastic.a must try place.

A hidden little gem located right near the duxton hotel . Set in the foyer of some serviced apartments it cannot seat many people but that is ok as it isn't too noisy. The background foyer music could have been a little quieter considering during dinner reception was closed so there was no need for the music blaring. The food is for the most part amazing. We started off with some lotus chips and the accompanying sauce was very yummy. The salt and pepper squid was the only let down of the meal. The squid was cut very small and the batter was wierd. It was almost like eating the pork crackle you get at servos, like that packing foam that looks like cheese puffs. The pork belly and eye fillet was amazing and would have again and again. Service was great. Menu is small and I like that
W. W.
Dinner for 4 on a Saturday night and the food certainly lived up to expectations as far as the food and service goes. Two dishes stood out...Hamachi Carpaccio and the Maki Crunchy Ebi Tempura Sushi. The sashimi plate however was a a bit light on we thought, big presentation small portion. The pork belly was really good and the eye fillet steak was cooked to perfection. Just a couple of things we thought let the experience down a bit...Decor certainly needs updating and made more inviting as it looks like it is a left over from a 1990's hotel breakfast place and then there was the crayfish! Be aware! Market price on the day was $120 that was way over the top especially considering how small the portion was. Best to avoid as it is not worth the money! Give it a go.
A. R.
Absolutely sensational food.
We had the beef tataki, king fish Carpaccio and the Sashimi for starters and I cannot express enough how fresh and melt in my mouth tasty those 3 dishes were. Simply exquisite...We also.had the.beef.Wagyu which was butter in my mouth and the prawns tempura. Lotus chips with the spicy sauce I would get again. With all the entrees included. Sake paddle is a must! Delicious.
H. B.
We shared a few plates that were so delicious, but the Wagyu Gyoza definitely won hands down. Highly recommend Tansawa

In short, please come over and experience the excellence of this lovely restaurant. Tansawa has always been me and my partner’s favourite restaurant in Perth, just love it!
C. L.
Tansawa is the best place in Perth to experience Omotenashi in a dining setting. Excellent Japanese cuisine is complemented by the warm and authentic hospitality from the owner Yuka-san. Impeccable in every way and absolutely worth the dining experience.
J. F.
Really friendly and nice service from the staffs. Food was fresh and delicious. Personally like the creamy crab the most! It goes well with the rice.
A. L.
Thank you for such a pleasant take away experience. Quality and value Japanese which is rare to find!
T. M.
Top Quality Sashimi, the best King Fish and Tuna Sashimi I have ever had in Australia. Impossible to find higher quality sashimi outside of Japan. Top quality sake and very nice owners and staff.
T. F.
Disappointed with this place. The food was pretty good but the waitress left a sour taste that’s for sure. We were served with prawns when in fact we ordered squid. Upon informing the waitress, she refused to compromise, insisting that we had made the mistake. We had not. After this disagreement she essentially stopped talking to or serving us. There was a similar disagreement with another table. Very poor customer service. Servings portions were also quite small, rather poor value.
M. Z.
Great little Japanese restaurant. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The spiced Edamame are a nice discovery
S. S.
Love the food there. Will definitely be back soon.
K. D.
Went there for dinner with my partner, and there really isn't a bad thing I can say about the place.
Delicious food, great service, and an excellent atmosphere.
I've only been there once, but it's already one of my favourite restaurants in Perth.
Highly recommended, and I'll definitely be going back again soon.
W. L.
interesting menu and nice food, we really liked the pork belly and spicy crab dishes
C. B.
Absolutely amazing food, some of the best I've ever eaten and brilliant service as well. Would highly recommend the Salmon Aburi Nigiri 🤤
D. L.
We were absolutely amazed by this little gem of a restaurant! The service was impeccable and the food was out of this world. We have been to many high end restaurants, in London, Marco Pierre White, Jamie Oliver, Gordon Ramsay to name a few and this restaurants food is definitely up there with the best of them! We will definitely be going back next time we are in the area. Recommend any food on their menu and we sampled a few, each plate was pure perfection and also recommend the lychee martinis 😉
D. N.
Friendly staff, food is a little bit oily but hugh quality
Nice and cozy venue
B. O.
My partner and I visited last night.
Every dish that arrived at the table blew our taste buds, the food was outstanding.
They timed each dish perfectly, the service was 5 stars.
We would highly recommend Tansawa.
L. H.
Simply the best dine-in service I have ever received in Perth - and I've lived here for 14 years! The waitresses made us feel welcome from the moment my friend and I walked in to the moment we left. Food was great quality and beautifully presented. I highly recommended this place.
Y. Y.
Delicious food, friendly staffs, great wine and nice atmosphere. Oysters were great & beef tataki was my favourite 👍 Hope you have Tabasco sauce next time to have with natural oysters...
K. K.
Delicious food and lovely atmosphere. A must go!
P. W. (.
Stunning dining, the balance of flavours and textures and freshness of the food was more than a meal, a flavour experience instead. Very reasonable prices considering the quality. Didn't think to take photos but the presentation matches the flavour, superb!
K. F.
Absolutely amazing!!!
Trust the recommendations as they are mentioned to you - they are not wrong!!!
If your looking for fresh, authentic and delicious food this is the place. Customer service is exceptional and will go above and beyond to make your evening delightful.
I would and will eat here again and again!
Thank you for such a beautiful meal.
A. G. U.
Excellent food, excellent services convenient location, will definitely be back soon
A. G. U.
Ordered 2 servings of the sashimi set which was presented in a large single standalone bowl, and although it was fresh and delicious, the portions itself did not look worthy of the price ($58), scallop was delicious but also quite expensive. Goyza, eye fillet and chicken teriyaki were superb, however assorted tempura, squid and chicken karage was a let down in taste and price point. Biggest gripe was slow service, forgetting the orders and ordering a glass of coke - a large tumbler filled with ice and the smallest serving (most definitely not a 375ml can- we could see the pours being measured). We requested the rest of the coke later and was charged for another coke ($8 total for one can). Overall, whilst seafood was fantastic, it was not a great experience for the price point- $330 for 6 adults and 1 child.
A. G. U.
Great food and excellent customer service.
A. G. U.
I'm from Japan. I love this restaurant.
You can easily enjoy authentic flavors.
My recommendation is sashimi and tempura.
The female owner's customer service is also friendly and polite. I'm grateful for your detailed response.
I will come again.
A. G. U.
Excellent cuisine. A must for any food lover
A. G. U.
Looking around for something Asian and I chanced upon this fusion Japanese restaurant. Some finger food with Asahi dry beer, cant get better than this. DO NOT MISS.
A. G. U.
Had a lovely & delicious dinner. We had Aburi Salmon Belly, Prawn Tempura, Sashimi Moriawase, Gyu Tataki (would prefer more garlic chips), Salt & Pepper Ika (love the hint of chilli). My favourite would be the Prawn Tempura & Beef Tataki. Would definitely come again to explore more dishes. Service was exceptional. Thank you to the owner & staff.
A. G. U.
Brilliantly presented food, cooked to perfection. This is modern Japanese food, and it leaves the old fashioned places in the dust - this food is truly Japanese but it has evolved, just as it has in Japan.
I’ve no idea how a restaurant this good is sitting in the ground floor of such a basic hotel, but it’s a real delight. I’ve dined with them at least 8 times now, never a dud meal, with friendly service and a small but excellent wine list the final touch.
Highly recommended.
A. G. U.
Tried to get a late booking at Nobu but as usual I left it to late, so I decided to google Japanese restaurants close by. Glad we found this one. Food was deliciously prepared, service was great, only downside is they had Tacos on the menu with n/a next to it. Was looking forward to them when looking online.
G. S.
Japanese food is not normally our dining out preference....but WOW. Wonderful meal. Hostess guided us to some wonderful flavors. Excellent balance. We had two starters and three meals and loved them all. Would definitely become a favourite if we weren't visitors to Perth.
J. F.
My husband and I were looking for a quiet but friendly place to eat. Did we find a hidden jewel. The food was absolutely sensational, the restaurant sparkling clean and settings exquisite. Staff were super friendly and eager to assist or explain the menu. Chef came out after dinner to talk, wonderful.
If you are looking for fresh, mouth watering Japanese food then this is the place to go. So good returning with the husband for our wedding anniversary. Give it a try, you will not be sorry.
D. L.
Phenomenal service, every meal is beautifully crafted with a taste to match. There's enough menu variety to satisfy all moods without drowning you in options, with dishes offering quality over quantity. Meal delivery is wonderfully paced, never feels like you're being rushed out of the place, and you'll struggle to feel as welcome in other restaurants as this!
R. M.
Fantastic service , with beautiful food . Nice little hidden gem in the city .
C. L.
Literally the best Japanese I've had in Perth. The staff are so lovely and the food was divine. Sashimi was so fresh and steak was cooked to perfection but the best dish was by far the duck it was so tender and flavoursome. Will definitely be back!
J. H.
It was a very warm night. We sat on the balcony and it was very pleasant. The food was good, the service by the kimono clad staff was attentive. Their attention to detail of the way things were served was very nice too.
y. v.
This is a great hidden gem of a restaurant for those who love Japanese cuisine, especially Spider Maki and other specialties. Reasonably priced, good location but it's the food that makes this 'must have' dining experience!!
k.
Friendly staff combined with very fresh sashimi. Menu selection is small as is the size of the dishes and Prices are a little more upscale than expected, but I am told it is on par with the local area.
Will visit again the next time I'm staying in Perth.
C. V.
Really delicious food and hospitality with fair prices for the area. i have been a long time customer to this very lovely restaurant, never disappointed: highlights are the Gyu Tataki (seared beef), the Kamo No Teppanyaki (seared duck), and the yummy Denzu Dengaku (grilled eggplant). Highly recommended for an exquisite fine dining experience.
A. G. U.
Fresh and delicious sushi. The service is also great
A. G. U.
Situated adjacent to the lobby of the All Suites Perth serviced apartments, Tansawa doesn’t jump off the map or indeed the street. However, making the effort to find it is well worth the trouble. The food is delicately prepared, attractively served and delicious. The service was attentive, warm and welcoming. We enjoyed a range of hot dishes including eggplant with a sweet miso dressing, amazing wagyu gyoza, chicken kar-age, assorted tempura and a duck dish that was outstanding. I will definitely go again and highly recommend for a quick and tasty, lighter meal.
A. G. U.
Brilliant sashimi, the wagyu beef on hot stone was amazing. The rice wasn't hot so the sushi could be better, but the fish on sushi is fresh and of good quality. Very full on Sunday night. Make sure you go in early and enjoy the first round
A. G. U.
The best Japanese Restaurant I have ever eaten at! Every time I visit from Melbourne I can't resist a visit to Tansawa. The food is incredible and you couldn't ask for better staff. The Saki beer, the Wagu steak, the sashimi tasting plate, pork tacos and the pork belly are all delicious. So glad to have found this hidden gem!
A. G. U.
Very good quality and the service was exceptional. Whilst probably 5 stars for Perth, Tansawa is a solid 4 compared to establishments like Azuma in Sydney. That said, they served the best salt and pepper squid I have ever tasted.
A. G. U.
Service was pleasant and attentive, edmame was very tasty and spiced just right - even if a little salty, miso soup was delicious, teriyaki salmon was pretty good. Everything was presented in a simple, beautiful and elegant way. The unforgivable sin was playing the same song on repeat all evening with the same obnoxious advertisement playing every 3 minutes and 11 seconds (yes, I timed it). Talk about killing the ambience! One should never be bombarded with advertising during a dining experience! So that's 4 stars for the food, 1 star for the ambience. I would have preferred silence. Thanks for the great meal though!
A. G. U.
Lovely service and terrific food. I had the hamachi carpaccio, which was perfection in my mouth--spicy from the fresh green chile on top and sweet from the yuzu. Wow, very well done. Also had the sashimi moroyase (sp?), chef's selection--again, beautifully presented and really perfect cuts of fish. Very impressed!
A. G. U.
I used to frequent the original Tansawa Tei restaurant in Northbridge and was pleasantly surprised to find them again after many years. Yuki San is the consummate hostess and her husband / Chef creates Fresh delicious amazing dishes. In my opinion the best restaurant in Perth for the complete genuine Dining experience , Customer for life !
A. G. U.
Cant rate this one high enough! They don't advertise but dont need to. You will find them on Facebook though. Prices are very reasonable, food looks and tastes fantastic, quite the best Japanese cuisine we've ever had. Staff are very polite & friendly, and the service is excellent! A must visit and just a few minutes walk from the Duxton Hotel.
A. G. U.
A lovely quiet place with a peaceful ambience. Food is immaculately prepared and presented
T. J.
Wonderful Japanese food. Fresh ingredients and dishes are plated beautifully. A great combination of flavours are used in every dish to make each one stand out. A revival of Tansawa Tei after their closure in 2011, still run by the friendly and welcome Yuki and Jonny. Parking available on a minutes walk away. Definitely recommend.
c.
A diamond in the rough, absolutely delicious food. We had sashimi of the day, which was sweet and delicate, and gyu tataki, a well balanced mix of ginger, yuzu and garlic. For mains we enjoyed age dashi tofu, which had the most delightful half crispy half glutinous covering, chased by teppanyaki beef which was a very tender cut of meat. The stand out mains dish was the Nasu Dengaku, creamy eggplant with sweet miso sauce. Matcha ice cream with the fondant was a perfect finish. It was a big meal for two but really very worth the groaning stomach. 10/10 would eat here again, despite the kind of weird decor and music choices, which really didn't matter at all because the food was so good.
S. F. C.
Comfortable high quality Japanese cuisine. Delicious and not too pricey. Enjoyed the meal tremendously
S. T.
I used to go to Tansawa Tei in Northbridge every weekend with my family before they closed & they were great. My heart couldn’t have been filled with more happiness when I found out they had reopened, under a semi-new name, but they’re still AMAZING regardless! Amazing food that’s worth the price for sure. I look forward to coming back more regularly!
With kind regards,
The Kowi Family 💖

AMAZING food! We had the sashimi, lotus chips, beef tataki and pork belly and it was all excellent!!

This is a pure Jap restaurant.
Not some sort of fusion Japanese and whatever you get nowadays.
Attentive but not in your face service.
Not super decor but you're really there for the authentic and honest food.
L. T.
I had the wagyu gyoza and wagyu eye fillet, my wife had the karage chicken and salmon nigri. Food was amazing! Will definitely come back. Service was impeccable!
