Comments of Automata Restaurant

I was very impressed with the design of the menu and thought the flavours were cleverly selected to showcase a variety of native Australian ingredients. There were some flavour combinations (eg kiwi and tomatoes, liquorice and pineapple) I didn’t think I’d like, but ended up really enjoying them! It’s very refreshing to see restaurants use flavour combinations which are not your typical flavours (~Visited April 2021)

Great service and a nice restaurant setting. We loved the yuzushu and had about 5 of them. The food was of good quality but a couple of the flavours were a bit hit or miss.
We enjoyed our time here and would come back to try a different menu by this chef.

Managing COVIDSafe protocols well, Automata spaced their guests further apart on their long communal tables. This created a more intimate atmosphere in the darkened, minimalist, warehouse space decorated sparingly with dangling engine parts. Seated under a light made from what we guessed must be an airline engine, we embarked upon an 8-course tasting menu ($165/head). With barely enough time to neck a lemon Tommy’s margarita ($18) we’re whisked to Western Australia with a scallop sliced up and marinated in marigold oil and an oyster emulsion presented on mother-of-pearl. For a decadent beginning we opted for the Siberian caviar ($18/head) add-on, with the resulting umami bomb drawing up juicy green grapes from our off-dry 2020 Fritz Head ‘Juffer Kabinett’ Riesling ($104).
Plucked from a list with considerable mark-ups, it was an enjoyable wine where a lick of sweetness was balanced with plenty of limey acidity. It suited the tiger prawn and taramasalata on crisp seaweed drawn from the snack plate. Like the rest of the menu, this get-you-started dish showed technical excellence, from the thinnest of the cracker, to the toothsome bite to the peas on the green spring goats cheese tart, to the tenderness of the spiced duck heart skewer.
Everything is beautifully presented, from a disk of peach and chardonnay jelly topping raw tuna flavoured with fermented chilli (kanzuri) to a thin strip of blackmore wagyu tri tip topped with vividly green spring onion, wasabi and lime. However marinated salmon roe with zucchini, yuzu and sherry sabayon proves so salty it feels less like a course and more like a wine upsell. Briny intensity works better in southern calamari presented in squid ink vinaigrette under translucent sheets of lardo with jalapeño and herb.
At the sweeter end, the hectic combination of rosemary and bergamot, tangy yogurt, shiso and soft meringue doesn’t hit the spot. I much prefer a caramelised cheek of ripe mango dressed with the rattling Colombian cascabel chilli and juicy pearls of fingerlime. It’s a compelling argument for simplicity working best.

First time eating here and it was highly recommended by friends. Not my usual type of restaurant or cuisine but wanted to try something different for a special occasion.
We very much appreciated the different combination of flavours and presentation that went into each plate of the tasting menu.
The service was flawless and the staff very knowledgeable. The minimalist decore style of the restaurant was also appealing.
While it was a costly dinner with the beverage pairing added in as well, as a special occasion once off, we’re glad to have experienced it.

Had a fantastic time celebrating my partner's birthday. Many tasting menus I've tried sacrifice taste for aesthetics, but here each dish looked good and tasted amazing.
Also got the chance to chat with Clayton, the head chef. Personable, friendly and showed a real passion for his craft.
We'll definitely be back. Big thanks to all the staff who made it such a lovely experience

The food, drinks and service at Automata was excellent. We had dinner here to celebrate my boyfriend’s birthday and we both had the best time. I find with most restaurants - we’re usually underwhelmed by the mains but here every single dish was delicious! Every dish was well thought out and very unique. I’d recommend this restaurant to anyone celebrating a special occasion.

Awesome experience at Automata. We’ve booked a $165 menu but we decided to have an ‘upgrade’ to an Extended menu, totally worth it and we enjoyed every single dishes.
It’s a commitment to book but it’s totally worth it, we are glad we’ve got here to had the good. Asian inspired and real innovations in ingredient. Good uses of ingredients and Australian native herbs.
Will come back definitely when the restaurant has a new menu. 100% recommended!
B. A.
Amazing food, great location.
This time was the 2nd visit and the menu is completely different this time:) enjoyed a lot

We had a private event at Automata with Chef Clayton and it was stunning!
Clayton has a stunning palate and an amazing skill at cooking. The experience we had was a Wagyu tasting with a team of experts and Chef Clayton personally preparing a selection of blind tasting Wagyu steaks.
It was stunning to experience all the flavours and discuss these with him and the rest of the participants. A great experience and I would highly recommend Automata And Chef Clayton!

Was looking for a nice restaurant to take my girlfriend on our weekend in Sydney, wasn't sure as I read some reviews saying the food was interesting but not nice. Then I figured haters gonna hate so went anyway. And it was delightful. The food was interesting l, but also delicious, best degustation I've been to. Nice atmosphere for romantic night out, we had an individual table but the long table looked cool too, they separate guests so it works better than you'd think.

Extended tasting menu a must. Wine paring amazing. A wonderful journey, highlighted by flavour bombs experienced in every course that transitioned throughout. Thoughtfully brought together and finished with refreshing, simplistic elegance. It has been a few years since my last visit to Automata…. Well worth the return…Wow!
D. V.
I'm so glad we went here for our 5 year anniversary dinner. Each dish of the 10(?) courses was incredible but also progressed into a modern flavour journey. Lighting was perfect for taking food pics. Loved listening to the somm share stories of the drinks from the wine pairing. You're in for a treat if the Murray cod with the braised fennel and Geraldton wax is on the menu - I'm still thinking about it 4 days later.
L. W.
Honestly a dining highlight of the last 2 years for me - every element was perfect. Staff were great, knowledgeable and personable and friendly which alot of high end restaurants get wrong (they think you want some 'white glove' deferential waiter/slave).
Booze pairing was great overall, though i didn't love the Riesling. I do love a place that strays from the wine only pairings.
Food highlights were the squid, pistachio tart and the Jerusalem artichoke dessert.
At just over three hours of eating my biggest tip is go on an empty stomach!
S.
Amazing food and pairing. We did the extended menu and it was such a delight. All round delicious
A. C.
One of better experiences I've had with fine dining where I'm not hungry afterwards.
It was a master class of delicious flavours in each bite. I particularly remember the delicious whipped butter as part of the fish course... It was to die for!
High recommended and their service was great too.
J.
Really enjoyed all the dishes at Automata. There were some playful dishes, many had ingredients and textures that you wouldn't think to put together, but works really well.
While the service was friendly it was a tad inconsistent. Our initial waiter said there were menu options, but he never came back to discuss it so we dismissed it, only to learn from other reviews that there was an extended menu option. The couple next to us was also offered more of the delicious bread, but we weren't.
Aside from that, really delicious food. Everything was tasty, well worth a visit!
C. S.
Super impressed with the food, we went for the extended set menu and boy oh boy Mr. Clayton Wells did not disappoint.
No ostentatious interior, just well thought-through food with depth and I don't think I have ever extolled any fine dining restaurant’s entire set menu like this.
-The crunchy calamari with the jalapeno sauce that gave it a wasabi-esque kick
-The quail leg lollipops with black garlic and blackberry dust.
-That anchovy infused butter with bread🧈
-The perfectly cooked wagyu tri-tip that you can feel every texture of the cut🥩
-Wrapping up with 3 desserts including my personal fav - caramelized pineapple, licorice cheesecake and bee pollen. 🐝
I went to bed recollecting the feast with a happy tummy😋

Had the extended menu. Each and every dish was tasty and had unique flavours. The staff were lovely and attentive.
K. T.
Some interesting dishes. Tarts were the favourite. Dined here previously and this time wasn’t as good.
K. I.
Don't let the name fool you. Automata has absolutely no mechanical cheats going on. My first visit was after they opened, about 6 years ago. I was underwhelmed. It was all show and no go. Tonight though, the offer was as faultless as a Roger Federer service game (forgetting the Wimbledon championship game vs Nola in 19. I know, I need to move on). Every course here was thought through, and executed (no simile here) perfectly.
This place has come a long way.
Now, about the prison cell hard chairs...4 hours is a wonderful experience, unless you need to get a chiropractor and proctologist to work on you the next day. Guys, at least have cushions made please.
M. R.
Took my wife here on a quick trip to Sydney. Can't believe the warm welcome and service we received. It was great to see the old fashion service was alive and well. Started with a cocktail each then the 9 course degust. Well what a meal. Paired wth matching wines, was a magnificent experience. Well done Automata you certainly made our night.
B. E.
Chef Wells creative juice is back after lockdown. I feel his dishes were very creative this season and strongly inspired by essential oils.
Did he got signed up by doterra? Or maybe just the stress of lockdown + fatherhood lack of sleep, what ever it is keep it going.
Anyway, we really enjoy our meal this time around and his creativity definitely come up a notch.
The service was excellent as always!
The wine pairing were very adventurous + educational. Love it!!
K.
Second time coming here with my wife. We had the 5 course menu. The service here is one the best we've experienced among the chef hat restaurants. Very attentive to small details and makes you feel welcomed. Food wise, I find it a bit different to others in term of the combination of ingredients used but it works and taste great! Standout dishes were the coral prawns and parfait dessert. Overall, at the price that they charge coupled with the service and atmosphere, it's a fair value in my opinion.
J. C.
Interesting flavours. Good service. Minimalistic decor.
J. O.
We had the seven course tasting menu.
Highlight of the meal was the cuttlefish dish (truly exceptional), and the savory butter they prepared. The first (meringue) dessert was great too.
The cocktails were just ok, the service was unenthusiastic.
For a fine dining restaurant with hats and this price point, there’s a high standard to be met, and only some of the dishes met that standard. The shared table and the medium service just didn’t make it seem special.
This category, at least in Sydney, is saturated. I’d consider some of the competitors before booking here.
R. C.
Went to Automata last Friday night for the 1st time. WOW WOW WOW! The food was amazing - full of flavour, the combinations were sooo delicious, explosions of flavour with every bite. We had the extended menu with wine and saké pairings. The service was excellent and the banter between ourselves and the knowledgeable staff made it a memorable experience. Thank you to Clayton and the WHOLE team for an unforgettable night. We will be back!
K.
Fantastic food and service. Very welcoming vibe and not pretentious staff. Umi was our waitress
The choice of flavours were clear and crisp with none over powering or fighting for the attention of your palette. The dishes were exquisitely plated and i myself had a request for pescitarian meals which was carried through nicely with the same concept of flavours as the original meat dishes
S. -.
A delightful night out - bookings are essential, and weekdays are best. They have a nice bar where you can wait with one of their unique cocktails. I thoroughly enjoyed the food and the staff were so friendly!! Nice atmosphere and most of the wine pairings with the dishes were good. There were some misses, but I get the feeling that it's a constant work in progress.
J. W.
Amazing experience. The 7 course menu was great. The entrees were my favourite, followed by the pasta. The pastry was incredible. Really liked the chocolate mousse sort of dessert at the end.
Can be a bit expensive but would recommend trying.
N. K.
Great experience every time I visit. The menu is interesting and fun and the desert is always excellent. Service is good and I like the layout with the open kitchen.
H.
Fantastic staff paired with absolutely delicious food and wine. If you have the means to afford the very expensive menu, then I’d say it’s a must!
M. F.
Second visit to Automata (first was a collab with Thomas Frebel) & we had the tasting menu. Every dish blew us away but the steamed hapuka was probably the best. Service is excellent without being painful.
This is fine dining food without any of the fluff in a laidback enough environment which is exactly what I like.
Clayton (owner) comes over to every table & is a really nice dude.
100% one of Sydney’s finest & will be returning.
S. G.
Definitely an exhilarating culinary experience. We being Vegetarians had serious concerns going into the restaurant.
We're presently surprised and thoroughly enjoyed creation of Chef Clayton Wells whipped up five course meal. A feast to eyes and as well to palate, Each of his creations were visually a stroke of art. Perfectly balanced flavors making them truly perfect dishes.
Thank you Chef for giving us a truly unique culnury experience. A perfect ending to your Australian trip
D. F.
Fresh ingredients and very well presented. Drink pairings were exceptional and our sommelier was terrific. Service was otherwise a little lacklustre, particularly for the market this restaurant is pitched at. Some of our requests were simply forgotten and it all felt a bit disorganised with people coming in and huddling around in a confused group waiting to be advised where they would be seated.
K. P.
This is a fantastic restaurant. The food is beautifully presented and absolutely delicious, with real complexity of flavours. They cater well for all dietary requirements. The service was great, the perfect balance of attentive but not annoying. It's great also being able to watch what's going on in the kitchen. Highly recommend!
C. G.
We went there for Valentine's Day and weren't disappointed. Every course of the 7 course degustation menu was original, creative and delicious - as was the drinks pairing, which included beer, wine, sake and a vermouth. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable and suitably attentive. The only slight downside for me - and others probably don't mind - was the seating - a lot of the seating is along a long table and you're sat next to strangers. They obviously wanted a chummy vibe, which many people won't mind, but I personally find it distracting having to overhear snippets of strangers' conversation next to you. Still a great evening though.
J. H.
Had the 7 course degustation. The presentation was excellent for all the dishes and the touch of Asian influences were evident throughout. The sand crab pasta was brilliant as was the romesco with roe emulsion. The dory was well cooked but the flavour was overpowered by the herbs and whilst the tri-tip was excellently cooked, felt the dish was missing an element of flavour. We were charged for truffles even though it did not come with the beef. Both desert courses were great.
J. C. (.
I didn’t take photos of all the food because it was so, so, so good! Come with an empty stomach though because you’ll leave with your pants unbuttoned. He experience was amazing, the service was even better, 10/10 recommend you visit.
M. D.
Super cool urban style and New York feel. The food is spectacular, and the service is something else. We ate at the bar, and never had to look for someone to help us decide on which items we wanted to swap into the set menu. The wines were perfectly matched. A stand out surprise was house baked bread with an airy butter infused with chicken wing jus and anchovy - OMG. We are still talking about it.
N. K.
New Aussie cuisine meets wonderful prices with a fairly inexpensive tasting menu ($95/5 courses). It was a wonderful experience trying the interesting flavors of the yummy menu items (and delicious cocktails). My favorites were the pork loin and the yellowfin tuna. I’d suggest trying the 7 course menu ($125) so you get to try the delicious scampi and black currant sorbet
f.
All 5 courses and pairing wine were well executed. Service was excellent with care and attention. Lots of Japanese influence and ingredients which was a pleasant surprise. Only fault I would mention was the hard wooden chairs was a bit uncomfortable to seat through a 3 hrs lunch.
A. E.
The food here is excellent, everything you've heard is true. The flavour combinations are deft and interesting, and easily matched by a clever and at times unexpected beverage pairing. The service is knowledgeable, friendly and generous, a delightful experience.
J. A.
Did the 7 course degustation dinner. Food was delicious and very well presented. Catered well for dietary requirements. Service was amazing. Great value for 7 courses and we were actually quite full.
Parking can be tricky in this area. Need to find a 4hr ticket spot if you're doing the degustation.
J. H.
One of the best restaurants in Sydney
P. T.
The degustation menu started off really well, with the grilled octopus and the tiger prawn with XO and seaweed really hitting home for me. The star of the show was the steamed hapuka with roe emulsion, kombu butter & laver (you'll see that seafood and seaweed really feature in the theming of this menu). Visually, the dish isn't much to look at, but when you take a perfect bite (combining all the ingredients in a single bite), the flavours come beautifully together, like super tight harmonies in an acapella, if you will 😄. Unfortunately, it just went down from there: the spanner crab pasta was too salty; and dessert was a disappointment. The set jersey milk in burnt watermelon and olive oil could've been interesting - i understand the chef was trying to combine savoury/umami into the dessert, but the taste of the burnt watermelon was a tad too strong - dialling back the burnt taste a notch or 2 might make it more palatable. I did not like the pumpkin seed sorbet - the sorbet itself tasted like chilled clotted cream with no flavour; you'd have to eat it with the meringue and the bits and pieces around (there was a lot going on in that bowl) to get some sort of sweetness. There was a splotch of cream beneath the sorbet, and cream on cream really just didn't do it for me.
Service was great though :)
A. T.
Exceptional as always. From the last time I ventured here, I was so amazed by the menu and staff, that has not changed at all! I am glad to see the menu continue to evolve and explore new realms of Australian/European dining.
Not only the chefs but the floor staff should be applauded with their superb knowledge in food and wines, there is no doubt to not trust the team.
Usually, I come out of most degustation quite heavy towards the end, however this menu was refreshing and left me rejuvenated, something definitely special!
C.
Food was great and service was very prompt and attentive. Be prepared to seat at a long table, which wasn't a bad experience at all. We had plenty of space between us and the people next to us.
N. L.
Absolutely loved the dining experience here. Customer service was 110% and food was simply amazing!
A. L.
A brilliant, simple fine-dining experience with great food and great service. We sat at the bar/chef’s table on a weekday dinner, and there wasn’t anyone else there, so it was a pretty cozy experience, whereas most people were sitting at a long table. We got the full 7 course meal, and the portions were perfect, with enough food that you could really taste everything.
Standouts from the course were the stracciatella (with dried tomato, anchovy, and olive oil) and the crab pasta (with fermented chili, black lime, and marigold). I appreciated how each dish only had a few components so you could taste each one clearly in a single spoonful. Each individual component was so distinctive, with the vegetables sweet and grassy, the seafood savory and full-bodied, and the steak bloody and animalic.
The desserts were also spectacular. I loved the yoghurt sorbet, paired with yuzu and lemon myrtle for a fresh citrusy vibe, grapes that were stunningly floral, and burnt meringue to balance out the sweet notes. The dark chocolate ganache was so fruity that the blackberries weren’t even necessary. The shiso and kelp oil were nice, gentle touches with the chocolate, although I’m a bit of an experimental dessert fiend so I wish they leaned more into the herbal and salty space, maybe using sesame leaves to up the anise note and salting the kelp oil more for a more present salty/sweet balance.
The service was also great here. The servers were really knowledgeable with their wine list recommendations, and they chatted with us throughout the meal as they could.
All in all, this is a meal worth having. It’s no-frills fine-dining-level food: everything’s delicious, and there aren’t three different sauces with every dish plated in little dots that you have to hunt down with your utensils.
E. S.
Delicious food, very creative menu but all works well. The long tables didnt bother us at all. Staff was not the most friendly for a mod to high end restaurant though
A. W.
Very good degustation menu, highlights were the pork and the desserts. Great to experience some fantastic Australian ingredients. Wine selection wasn't the best.
A. S.
Automatta is in a chic alley and is a pretty restaurant. one big shared table which would be ok if the loudest, drunkest Aussie girl didn’t happen to eat next to you. The food is good, pretty and tasty, but what makes this place special is the pairings done by Tim, the sommelier: beer, white, red, sake, fortified wines.... every single paring made sense and had a proposal that made the food experience special. Its the first time where the sommelier steals the show for me. Kudos. If i was just giving stars to the pairing this would have 6 stars
S. D.
Amazing culinary experience and wonderful, friendly, and knowledge service. The venue is pretty minimalistic but pretty.
R. T.
Very happy with the menu and paired beverages. Flavours are very interesting and the quality of service is good. The ambiance is casual yet fancy.
N.
Pretty good dining experience. Service was great, ambience was good and food was above standard. I really enjoyed the pasta especially. Will recommend to others!
N. R.
10/10 great service and food. We were an excitable group that they let stay as long as we wanted and we’re super engaged in the food and our questions.
A. A.
Thanks for the creativity , price is just right and menu is excellent. You can see every dish has been carefully thought through , no compromise. Well done!
m. z.
One of the nicest dining experiences i had in Australia. The preset menu changes according to the seasons and every single dish we had was amazing. The wine was perfect and the service was impeccable.
P. S.
Inspiring and delight inducing tasting menu accompanied by some wonderful wine discoveries. Slight let down at the final course where the thus far amazing wine gave way to an awful cocktail, otherwise would have been a perfect meal. Lovely people, great service and good energy right through the place.
S. A.
Excellent degustation with matching wines. Service was what you would expect from a hatted restaurant. We will return soon!!
We had our staff Christmas party here for 16 people and opted for the five course degustation. Impeccable service, superb food and amazing wine/cocktails/sake matches ensured for a fun filled night. The manager, sommelier and the wait staff were all great. Well deserved of their two hat status.
B. V. G.
Delightedly surprised about this menu, the service. The standout is the chicken jus and anchovy whipped butter with house made rye bread. And the service. So phenomenal. Will definitely go back!
J. Y.
Magnificent food , creative dishes beautifully presented. Friendly professional service, cool restaurant space with lots of communal tables , large open kitchen Excellent value for money!
A. F.
The flavours were a bit bland and boring. I was expecting more at that price point, but it was essentially a normal meal with a few fancy garnishes thrown in. The whole time it felt like the waiter was trying to *talk* the food into being great. We were crowded onto a trestle table with two other groups, which was noisy and uncomfortable.
A. G.
Great dining experience.
- Ambience is very casual yet intimate.
- service is attentive and friendly. I was sitting at the counter and had Clayton Wells himself served me couple of courses.
- Food: really good! This isn't on their menu, but omg their butter with capers is amazing! They gave Pre-meal snacks of canapes. My fav meal is their mud crab and mushroom pasta. It may sounds simple but it was super delicious! Their black pepper ice cream is surprisingly tasty (yep definitely can taste the black pepper).
Overall, I left home feeling satisfied and super full. And have a few awesome photos for memories. $125 for 7 courses definitely value for money!
A. E.
Absolutely sensational from start to finish. The ambiance of the place, awesome team who are top drawer, the sommelier who knows everything about each wine and how it pairs so perfectly with each dish and the food... Each course has its own unique story and blend of flavours, it takes you on a journey and by then end you're complete and more than satisfied with occasion.
It is absolutely worth the little extra for the 7 courses and definitely heightened by the paired wines too. They're matched to perfection. Highly recommended and one of the very best in NSW for its full experience. Thank you for making my 40th so great!
K. F.
Extraordinary dinner experience.
Does slightly fall short of the price/value ratio
R. B.
The only negative was we ate way too much! My favourites were the mud crab pasta with sweet corn and the custard apple sorbet. Delicious all around.
J. H.
Love this restaurant a lot, so I kept going back. There are a lot of quality restaurants in Sydney, but I highly recommend this place for their gourmet food, their service, the atmosphere and the value.
J. P.
I love this place. The menu is always exceptional and the wine list is amazing and staff are friendly.
C. T.
Great degustation, service and ambience.
T. L.
Celebrated my boyfriend's birthday here last night and was really impressed. Every dish was presented well and cooked to perfection. They have an extensive wine list and beverage pairings are available. We were curious about the cocktails served in pre-mixed bottles but they were surprisingly tasty (I recommend the tequila cocktail which has a nice chili kick). The staff were super friendly and really added to the experience. Will definitely be back!
R. L.
Great value degustation with excellebt service. The layout means there is a good view of the food being made
D. D.
Amazing, amazing, amazing! Innovative but not inaccessible, very complexly developed flavours but not overly challenging so you’re guaranteed to enjoy every bite! Highly recommend doing the beverage pairing for anybody on the fence about it. It’s wonderfully curated and the staff are very knowledgeable. Great, comfortable service from the team, made us feel at home right away which sometimes isn’t easy to feel in these settings. Loved it!
B. C.
Great service and the food was incredible. Highly recommend
I. H.
One of the best restaurants in Sydney with great service and a degustation menu that tantalizes the palate.
T. R.
This is an Excellent restaurant.
The staff are incrediblely friendly and knowledge about every dish in the menu.
As a non meat eater they were very accommodating and replaced the meat menu items for me.
There is only a set degustation menu that was amazingly tasty and so delicious. Every dish was a winner especially the blackened calamari and the dessert cheesecake.
We did not have the cheese course as we were pleasantly stuffed.
You will need to book in advance to avoid disappointment.
V. S.
Amazing menu, great experience.
Definitely must try, highly recommend the pairing.
k. g.
Excellent value for money.
Amazing texture and taste.
service was polite and attentive
Y. S.
Loving this place, great genuine service offering modern twist to australian asian cuisine with bold flavors! Good value for a 5 course meal too.
A. W.
First time to Automata and was blown away! haven't had a dining experience like that in a long time where every dish hit the mark. The wine pairing was perfect. Service was great. We had a wonderful experience
P. M.
Exceptional tasting menu and very nice atmosphere. Definitely recommend if you're looking for something special
V. N.
I have always had a great meal at Automata. The change in menu is great. Every dish is wonderful and they cater to gluten free well. My only wish is that they had a more extensive wine list (especially with handpicked wines just being up the road, they could easily add more I feel). The price point is great with option of 5 or 7 course and optional wine pairings. Will be coming back for sure :)
R.
The 7 course degustation and the drinks were sensational - conceptual and refined dishes. Service was outstanding! The service staff were so thoughtful, warm and easy going. Both my little niece and nephew had an awesome time chatting to the chefs in the kitchen, they went home feeling very inspired. All 10 guests went home feeling very full and happy. Thank you for helping us celebrate our mum’s birthday!
P. M.
Great food and attentive staff, always!
I have been here at least six times (having the 7 course degustation and paired wines on each occasion) and it’s always amazing.
The quality of food and service has been of the same high level each time, while – fabulously – the menu changes!
The wines/sakes are as interesting as the dishes are inventive.
I have had one or two dishes miss the mark flavour wies, however, it’s never because of poor cooking — merely a ballsy culinary experiment
J. N.
Thankful the host let us sit at a private table and we had nice service throughout the night. Loved loved loved the 7 course degustation + cheese platter !! Would like to go back to try the next menu! The dishes are complicated and delicious. Best accompanying bread in a fine dining restaurant for me here. My only wish is for more character or explanation about the decor.. and i like table cloths instead of hearing clinking cutlery.
H. C.
What an amazing night, I came here to celebrate my birthday for dinner. Really impressed with the service and food provided. Especially our waitress was very attentive and friendly!!
Definitely coming back sometime soon!!
P. C.
Hmmm difficult to leave this review. It felt a bit like it was trying too hard but a lovely space and vibe. Food and service was generally good but avoid the wine pairing - definitely not worth the money. Didn’t quite live up to my expectation overall.
C. B.
Having been disappointed by some of the other more higher priced fine dining options in the city, I was delighted to try the five-course lunch special at Automata. The entire experience was a well operated and delicious endeavor. Staff are polite, professional and knowledgeable. Plates are well conceptualized and flow easily between courses. Plating and portions all get high marks. I wouldn't hesitate to return and see what new dishes the kitchen was putting forward.
K. R.
I've been here twice and each time it has been exceptional service and food. Most recently it was with a large group of work colleagues. I was in a very early stage of pregnancy and did not want the group to know. I called the restaurant the day before, and they were able to alter my dishes without anyone noticing. The time before, I was drinking, and the accompanying wines were fantastic!
C. S.
Myself and two others enjoyed the service and generally had a nice night. However, it was far from perfect:

The matches really missed the mark, the two who were drinking only drank 2-3 of the glasses provided as the others were simply not enjoyable with the food.
Food
3 courses were real hits, others were absolutely fine but one or two we all didn’t enjoy or even choose to leave (in particular the deserts).

Pretty cool restaurant with good atmosphere and so so food. Automata gives you an option of a five or seven course menu. I opted for the five course which also includes two bite sized snacks and bread and butter. The bread and butter was one of the better parts of the meal which is an issue at a place where the individual spend is 100 AUD plus.
Food: 3.5 stars
Service/environment: 4 stars
Value: 3 stars
Overall: 3.5 stars
The meal started off with seaweed cracker with kombu cream and bbq pumpkin tart. Both were ok and not particularly tasty.
The next dish was a pink snapper tartare topped with asparagus and caper. Presentation was nice and the dish was decent but nothing spectacular here.
The stracciatelli with olive oil was my favorite dish of the meal. It paired really well with the bread provided. I enjoyed this dish quite a bit.
The spinner crab with fermented chili pasta was something that sounded great on paper but The taste profile really wasn’t for me. The pasta was cooked a bit under as well for my liking but for those who like a lot of bite to their pasta may like the preparation.
The hanger steak was disappointing for me. The steak was cooked really well but the marinade used was overall sour and overpowered the meat.
The dessert was a yogurt yuzu with a burnt lemon meringue. I enjoy lemon desserts and appreciated the contrast of the tart lemon with the yuzu ice cream.

The food is the star here, it's excellent, interesting and at ~$100 for five courses (per person) it's decent value for a degustation-only restaurant. Worth a trip or two just for the food. The service however needs an upgrade and doesn't do the food justice. We were greeted twice and asked about our booking on entering, it took too long to be welcomed once seated and offered drinks. As with other review the space is nice but doesn't really match the standard of what you expect for $300 dinner.
K. J.
I love this restaurant. This place will make a killing if franchised in Shanghai.
K. P.
I went a couple of years ago and it was amazing. However, my recent visit wasn't worth it. The pork loin looked beautiful but the taste was off (and I like pork). The rest of the dishes weren't gastronomically-memorable. Only visit when they have beef or fish and then dial down your expectations.
R. T.
This was our first time dining at Automata. The vibe was relaxed and the service friendly. We had the pairing that included wine, sherry, cocktail and a really nice savoury sake. The food didn't disappoint although some like the spanner crab pasta had unusual flavour combination that we're not used to. Initial umami tones was built up to bold heat from chillies and yuzu. Overall, Automata provided an excellent tasting menu and great value. We've been looking at their other food pictures and would be interested to come back when the menu changes in the future.
V. M.
It was great experience at Automata. The food taste was amazing and delicious
A. P.
At the start of my first trip Automata was off to a bad start, but by the end Automata became one of my favourite restaurants. Between the fact it was genuinely hard to pick a best dish due the fact they all had exceptional elements, and the effort to make it a special night. Automata was an excellent dining experience.
Do try the pairings with the meal. They are unique compared to so many other restaurants and for my wife, who had some restrictions, they did some outstanding drinks.
Automata isn't perfect, there are elements they could improve but they do so much right that you will enjoy your experience.
T. S.
We had a delightful evening at Automata. There are some truly unique and utterly delicious dishes here. Everything tastes fresh and vibrant with layers of flavour hitting you as you go and beautiful textural combinations. The service is friendly, attentive and not overbearing. I would say that Automata is a unique dining experience that is not to be missed.
Z. J.
One of my fav restaurant in Sydney. Always come back for creative dishes. I don’t understand some people give 1 star review about their foods. They might enjoying hot instant noodles all the time got their tastebuds damaged. 🙃
t. l.
My favourite restaurant of all the time. Sarah (the head chef) is very talented and attentive. The rest of the team is amazing too.
I visit here average once a week, its my to-go whenever I'm not cooking at home. You can be assured they use lots of produce from small-scale producers with regenerative practices.
Don't be shy if you want alternative dish from the menu, they have it!
F. P.
Really good atmosphere! Staff paid a lot of attention to us. Food was amazing! The wine pairing just perfect! The cheese course a superb addon! Definitely worth the money.
A. L.
They can do better. Food was excellent, but.... We walked in and given two seats at the large communal table, where everyone was elbow to elbow. Just like school dinners. Or a call centre. We asked for another table, but were met with hostility (yes, hostility) from the maître d' who said, "You signed up to the terms and conditions on the reservation, and if you don't like it, its a $50 cancellation fee per person." Seems he uses that threat a lot. Never in my life was I treated like this in a restaurant.
i. k.
Very average food. But people were so friendly and kind. Had a great dining experience despite the not so great food.
S. A.
Absolutely phenomenal degustation- with each course sending my tastebuds into a joyous frenzy, and the matching alcohol pairings bringing out the best and most subtle elements of each dish, it was hard not to fall in love. We cautiously approached our seat at the bar, concerned that the clunking of cocktail shakers and coordination of staff would detract from the experience, but it was the absolute opposite - it offered decent privacy from the rest of the customers, plus we were able to watch as each course and cocktail was prepared, with the bar tender even humouring us and answering our questions regarding ingredients and techniques. Service was prompt and discrete, and the sommelier was phenomenal. Overall, a very worthwhile experience with an appropriate price tag to reflect.
B. S.
Wow. Creative dishes with local ingredients. We sat at the bar (4 chairs) and staff were fun, friendly, and attentive. Chef stopp f by a few times to answer questions. Best meal of our three days in Sydney so far!
I. L.
Enjoyed the set 3 course lunch menu very much. Very good and attentive service, attention to details. Asian influenced dishes, very nicely flavoured. Modern setting with open kitchen in a new fashionable neighbourhood of chippendale. Would definitely go back.
F. M.
Really great restaurant down the super cool Kensington St laneway. We had a great time with a five course fixed menu for $88 + wine match at $60. The staff are friendly and the huge open kitchen is an entertaining view. The food was fresh, creative and not too over the top. Great night out.
M. F.
The team at Automata are hands-down up there as the best in Sydney. The food is perfectly balanced across all dishes using the best produce and the sommelier, Mani, provides a fantastic wine offering of wines from across the world. Highly recommend the beverage pairing as it is not just wine. By far one of the best restaurants in Sydney.
M. H.
Had the 5 course tasting menu with matching wines. Exceptional! And beautifully presented. Excellent service from attentive, knowledgeable staff.
Industrial decor set within the Old Clare Hotel but access is directly from Kensington St. I love this street with its converted workers cottages, niche bars, art galleries, and Spice Alley tucked away down a side alley. Before you go, have an aperitif at the pub in the Old Clare Hotel or in one of the niche bars.
R. S.
Great meal and wine pairings. Friendly, attentive staff who spoke clearly and explained every dish and drink. All very tasty. The quantity of food isn't great, which suited me well but if you are a big eater then you may not be full at the end of the night.
K. D.
Outstanding. I visited Automata a while back when it was relatively new and had a great meal but my recent visit was outstanding in every way. Absolutely delicious food. Perfect beverage pairings. Service absolutely on point. Even the restaurants playlist was impeccably crafted.
M. B.
We took the Weekend Australian Top 50 Restaurants magazine with us on a visit to Sydney and chose Automata as it was within 20 minutes walking distance of our hotel in Darling Harbour.
Their approach is a 5 course set menu with optional cheese course and optional matching drinks. Most seating is at a communal bench with couples sitting across from each other, but they said no one was sitting next to us,so I chose to sit next to my wife so we coul both see the kitchen.
Wow - what can I say - original dishes that taste amazing, matched with excellent wines and sake. It was great to be able to watch the chefs at work in the open kitchen. When I complained about the loud energetic rap music they immediately changed to a decent playlist which they felt was more suited to my age group (80's rock) but the young lady next to me agreed it was an improvement.
A distraction was a sous chef who repeatedly snuck bites of food when he thought patrons weren't looking (why didn't he eat before starting service at 6pm?)
Final criticism - my wife got lost in the basement toilets and ended up in the restaurant next door. (Please put a sign downstairs guiding us back to the right restaurant).
Mind you, my petty criticisms have nothing to do with the excellent quality of food. All in all, it was a real pleasure - and be sure to have the matched drinks!
K.
Amazing food - came here for a lunch 7 course degustation and everything we cooked well, with thought and detail put into each delicate dish. I was actually quite full after the meal, especially with my 2 serves of home made bread rolls.
G. G.
I had the 'Dégustation' menu here, with a group of friends. We were all very impressed. I thought the courses were great, and the service and the ambiance in the restaurant were fine. I thought the meal was good value for the money (this is not a cheap restaurant), when compared with other similar offerings from other top restaurants in Sydney. If you like interesting eating experiences, this restaurant is recommended.
P. L.
Great service, great food, central location, friendly staff.
Service is attentive and pay attention to details. I went with family for my wife's bday, and ordered the 5 course menu. When I asked for one of the dishes to be changed from pork to fish for some, they happily accommodated the request. We brought our own bday cake but didn't request for it to be delivered to our table. To our surprise, they brought it out, complete with candle that we didn't bring, just before dessert is served. Nice and attentive.
The highlight for us is the raw kangaroo and the buckwheat milk sorbet.
D. V.
A good price point for their tasting menu. Beverage pairing is also good for the price. The highlight was the octopus with fennel while I didn't particularly enjoyed enjoy the I Ox's heart main course. The coconut sorbet with black sesame was very good.
K. J.
The service was amasing and staff were extremely knowledgeable, not only about the food and wine but also the history and story behind the restaurant.
The food was well balanced in flavour and had a sense of mystery when presented at the table. For a 5 course degustation the price was great especially when I would consider the high quality of food on par with some of Sydney best restaurants.
Definitely one for the regular list.
M. L.
The food was not as special as hoped - perhaps it was oversold to me. Found the flavours a little strange, and in some cases, overpowering.
Service was friendly and professional, not fussy like typical fine dining (which is good), added one star because the staff are excellent.
J. X.
excellent meal, reasonable price, friendly service. I had cured kingfish with seaweed broth as my first course. Without a doubt the best kingfish dish I have ever had in my life so far. would definitely come again. Just to be extra picky, the knife on the side needs to be sharpened a bit more.
E. M.
Unbelievably great!! We truly had the best night at Automata. Incredible, friendly service, every course were to die for and a fantastic wine list.
H. S.
Walked in without a booking for a late lunch. Absolutely loved the degustation menu from start to finish. Great value with excellent wines. The staff are very friendly, especially the sommelier who was generous with both the wine and more importantly, his time.
S. L.
If you haven’t been here.. get ya skates on a head to it, you will not be disappointed. Either go crazy on the Mac daddy degustation or the entry level, but please.. please do the beverage pairing, Mani the sommelier will wow you with his selection while Chef Clayton opens your mind and palate to tastes you’ve never experienced. If the boys from Michelin ever come downunder they’d lose their minds here. But hey, don’t take my word for it.. go.
R. L.
Came here a few months ago with my husband and father and completely fell in love, the set menu was inventive and delicious and the service was top notch with a beautiful complementary wine list. Cannot wait to come back.
J. Z.
Fantastic dining experience, food was interesting, plentiful and delicious. Easy professional service and the wine matching was to die for!!
Highly recommend and looking forward to my next opportunity to visit.
A. M.
Great food, not ideal for an anniversary and be prepared to be kicked off your table halfway through your degustation
The food was lovely. They turn common ingredients like a giant chunk of cabbage into a unique flavour, very interesting. Dishes are small but the bread is filling.
Went there for an anniversary dinner, and when we booked weeks in advanced, asked for one of the individual tables so it could feel special. When we got there, they sat us on a table with 6 other people, next to a giant concrete support pillar. When a stand alone table was available, we asked if we could move to that table, reminding them we were here for our anniversary. The response was no because someone who had a reservation would be arriving shortly despite the fact we had made a reservation for a table weeks ago.
Half way through our degustation they kicked us off our shared table because more people were coming and sent us over to the bar stool area that faced a wall.
We were very polite about our requests and very understanding of other bookings. We were just thrown around with little care that it was a special occasion.
To pay $250 and have been shuffled around constantly and lack of care, we will not be returning to Automata which is a real shame because it was lovely food, just the care of service completely took away from it and resulted in an average experience.
A. L.
Delicious 7 course, awesome service. Fill you up in the end with small portion dishes.
J. K. T.
As many have attested, one of the best restaurants in Australia. Can't believe what good value it is when compared to other degustation restaurants in Sydney. The food is sensational, the service immaculate. Everyone we recommended going to Automata inevitably raved about it.
L. Z.
Wasn't blown away, but food was decent.
W. D.
Pretty good. Good variety of drinks. Excellent service. Pork belly was a bit fat and didn't have the skin - weird right? The seating is shared communal style
A. H.
Amazing! Excellent food and wine pairing
L. L.
Staff were amazing and the degustation with matching drinks (sake, beer, liqueurs & wine) was on point. Doesn't get the 5 stars when comparing it to other fine dining options but it's a very solid 4.
J. M. B.
WOW! We love that there are such innovative young chefs out there. Such friendly knowledgeable service especially Matthew (alias Jefferson) was a font of great intel on the interesting wines. The peaches in Serrano, plums with sheep’s curd. The desserts / delicious- I won’t go on! All I can say is WE LOVED IT. Thank you Aotomata
S.
Booked by a friend within the hospitality industry as one of his go to Sydney restaurants. Modern asian fusion. Outstanding food and superbly matched wines. Truly a culinary delight. Highly recommended
M. C.
Incredible lunch degustation - fantastic wine selection. Catered beautifully for a a GF coeliac
B. Y.
Had a great experience for lunch there, the fish was amazing! Each dish was unique and the open kitchen dining was great. I felt like I could eat more after the meal but, it is lunch after all.
L.
Expectations surpassed. Without doubt, the best dining experience we've had in Sydney. Special mention to Mani, the music chooser and of course, the chef!
R. B.
A real favourite of ours. Lovely and quiet with a story to accompany each dish and wine. Great value for the quality and attention that you will receive.
D. M.
Had the 7 course degustation and it was the bomb. Well priced. Not pretentious. Sommelier was friendly, witty and knowledgeable. Great wines! Well done whoever set this place up!
R. C.
I've had the lunch menu here twice and both times the food and service has been fantastic. It's a little pricey but so far it's been worth the cost for the playful dishes that make the experience not only tasty but also fun.
M.
Innovative but highly edible food. Amazing beverage pairings. Service a bit hit and miss for us and share table can be an issue if you are near a noisy group. Great value. Portions ideal.
F.
Reasonably priced 6 course degustation menu with interesting wine matching. Some innovative combinations and culinary experience (some more successful than others but always with great products)
A. C.
The flavour is innovative but may not be to everybody's taste. Wine by the glass is on the expensive side ($15-20). Seating is on along a long table so it can be a bit tight on a busy night. Requires credit card for booking and at $95/person for a 5 course dinner it is a bit annoying that a credit card surcharge was added to bill before I even took my wallet out.
O. L.
Excellent service and staff! My friends and I were running late for dinner, but all the staff were still very patient and extremely helpful!
K. P.
Found the menu to be a bland, it wasn't the fine dining experience advertised. Enjoyed 3 courses, the others were either tasteless or not quite the right balance. Service was good. Overall not wowed
J.
Amazing and delicious dishes on top of that very creative and well presented. Friendly service and knowledgeable. Definitely a restaurant to come back as they are always creating new dishes.
M. K.
The dinner service was absolutely delicious. Will thought out meal, every dish was top notch, and the service was excellent. Best meal I've had in Sydney.
J. D.
Innovative food and great decor at a reasonable price. The ceramic crockery is amazing! Excellent drink selection too. I will definitely be coming back!
C. C.
Very enjoyable meal. Great service. And reasonable by Sydney standards.
Just one problem. Do I want to hear loud 70s progrock from Led Zeppelin and Cream while I'm eating a degustation? Nope!
Minus 10 house points Grythendore.
A. Q.
Been here 2 times and each visit was perfect. The food was amazing, the waiting staff professional and welcoming. Loved the Sake and the sommelier we had was great!!! Keep up the good work 💯
R. H.
I've been to this place 5 times now, and it's been stellar every time. The super creative with the design of the food, and the staff always so warm and attentive, highly recommend this place!
J. W.
Had the $88 degus, and out of 6 dishes, 4 hit the mark for me, so it was pretty good for what it was. Service was top notch, couldn't fault it at all. The ambience was great too.
A. M.
Our 5th visit to Automata and we will keep coming back. Excellent food and service. As good as the best in Sydney. Thank you!!
J. H.
Loved the full Deg dinner.
M. S.
Automata is the bomb. Interesting, innovative and fresh food, which is all beautifully balanced and presented. Staff are all great and bonus points for the consistently fresh tunes they have playing. 👌👌
R. C.
Have been here 3 times now and consistently the nicest food in Sydney- no doubt. Will be back to have the new menu soon too, I’m sure it’ll be better than ever.
D. W.
Dined here on Saturday 23 March 2019, service, food and place were excellent.
Special thanks to Glenda and Matt for their excellent service.
Will return when in Sydney next.
Thanks Dean & Wayne
R. S.
so casual, especially when solo dining where you can go for a seat at the bar next to the open kitchen. Thinking back, I just want to revisit when spring hits, im curious as to see what they do, cause every dish ive had so far has been creative
J. W.
The menu straddles that fine line between innovation and edibility, the atmosphere between funky and formality perfectly. Nicely balanced set menu, with off-the-wall drink pairing.
S. M.
As a Mosmaniac I now concede the inner west does it best. Automata, is $95 for a degustation banquet that beats all others. The roast quail breast is also outstanding.
C. L.
Impeccable! Food was incredible, service was great! Extremely well presented. The cheese tart was lovely and a must try!
A.
Very pleased with the gastronomic experience! Food was creative and tasty. The presentation was also beautiful. I would recommend this restaurant!
P. P.
Great dishes for myself. My most favorite was the quail and black angus. My son also enjoyed his own fish dish.
D. M. L.
Took a visiting friend from LA. He was so impressed, he paid for the evening. Our host, Dash, took great care of us, and evening was delightful.
N. N.
When I eat food that really moves me I have this really irrational desire to assault the chefs who have prepared it. It's like they need punishment for being so gifted. The seven course degustation made me positively homicidal it was so fracking good
S. D.
Food is value for money, reasonably priced degustation. Food is tasty and service is great. However, be prepared for communal seating and getting close to strangers next to you.
P. V.
A mod fine diner in Chippendale. 5 courses for $105 or seven for $130. This is one of the best-value tasting menus around.
L.
Absolutely fantastic seven course degustation. Lots of drink options including non alcoholic choices. Thoroughly enjoyed the ambience. Staff were friendly and professional!
R. B.
Amazing set menu. The service staff has good knowledge about the menu and wines. It's worth the money.
F. R.
Fantastic place to dine with a superb tasting menu. Lovely seasonal produce too. Highly recommended place. Excellent service.
A. B.
One of Sydney's best restaurants. Incredible food, very friendly and approachable staff that make you enjoy spending time with them eating their delicious food.
D. M.
Amazing! The set milk with burnt watermelon is the best dessert I've had in a long time!!!
A. T.
Value for money?? Nah... left feeling peckish, 5 courses of what sounds fancy but tastes far from... 2 of 5 courses exceeded expectations... though the service was a 6 out of 5 star and a great atmosphere...
J. W.
Was okay and became too fishy as the corses went on
M. W.
Have been a couple of times. Exceptionally good on both occasions and we’ll be back again. Great, efficient and friendly service. Beautiful food.
M. Y.
Great experience, staff are lovely and very attentive. Nice variation of flavors and beverage pairing went down a treat.
K. H.
Every dish was wonderful and tasty, service was excellent and price is reasonable for such a memorable meal. Loved the bread
K. P.
Great service and food and fair value all considered. Loved the pasta and hanger steak dishes in particular
M. C.
One of the few places where the set menu is worth the price. A dining experience. Recommend the HV Semillon.
J. P.
Amazing food. Good atmosphere and an extensive and comprehensive wine list. Can't recommend this place enough
A. L.
Tasty and creative food! Nice and funky interior design. One of fav restaurants in Sydney.
N. T.
Great service every time. Cool atmosphere. Menu can vary and can sometimes be amazing and other times not very good.
D. S. T.
Service was outstanding and the food amazing! Loved the ambience and decor. Looking forward to our next visit.
C. _.
Great food, loved the prawns and the desert but the service was very very very slow. 1h before getting our first dish
J. W.
It's Ok. Service was cold, food was mainly cold and flavours clashed. Decor was interesting tho.
E. G.
Love, love, love! Can't fault the food, service and atmosphere. Truly a unique and delicious experience!
N. E.
Fantastic presentation and culinary innovation, and yet almost every dish lacked flavour. Glad we tried it. Probably won't go again.
S. S.
Beautiful food. Definitely ask for your drink to be paired with your food. You’ll be in for a treat.
L. G.
Amazing meal, super service also had responsible social distancing measures in place. Support a fanatastic local business.
J. S.
Best in Sydney, period.
Better than Quay, Lumi and all. Try it! they are very detail oriented with superior ingredients
K. o.
World class restaurant. Great service and matching wine. Food is creative and brilliantly executed.
J. A.
It was great food with creativity but it was a bit slow service. It took us 3.5 hrs to finish.
F. P.
Came in for lunch and had the three course pre-fixe. All dishes were solid. Looking forward to returning!
S. T.
Fantastic. Well worth time and money spent on 7 course pairing. Food, service, pairing variety all extraordinary.
M. W.
It was okay. Some dishes were amazing, others forgettable. I bought a kebab afterwards as I was nowhere near full.
D. S.
Dined here for my brother's wedding. Great food, wonderful tasting menu.

For an award winning restaurant, I found nothing special. The food tasted average.
M. M.
Really enjoyed the food, wine and service. Would highly recommend
J. L.
Food was excellent but if it wasn't for the 3 bread rolls, I would've walked out hungry.
J. F.
Food was so so, presentation was good but the place was too dark for good photos.
