We recently had lunch here. All of the meals were outstanding, it would be impossible to say which was the best, nothing disappointed. The room was perfectly well spaced with fresh air flowing through the rooms. Staff were the perfect balance of being attentive without disturbing our meal or conversation. The food and service at Eschalot was amazing. We loved everything we had and the portions of food were generous. The pork belly small plate and swordfish main were a standout for us. The rib eye was a bit fatty in the middle but it was still lovely. The accompaniment to the creme brulee was a little dry and a bit too sweet for our taste but the creme brulee itself was delicious. Great restaurant for a date night! We loved the dining experience!

My husband and I came here last night to celebrate our anniversary. We were kindly welcomed in by the staff. We were seated in a cosy room with a fireplace. Rose looked after us and did a great job of explaining each course and the wine that was paired with each dish. Each dish was perfectly matched to the wine and we were given an amazing experience from start to finish. Would highly recommend eating dinner here if you are looking for something more than just a nice meal out.

What a beautiful place for five women to celebrate the missed 60th Birthdays of Covid ! The food was fabulous ( the Chef’s selection ) , lovely surrounds and staff attentive . We would highly recommend this restaurant for these qualities and would have rated a five out of five But unfortunately it’s so incredibly noisy inside ( yet only 13 people in our room where we dined )….. I would ask the owners to please look at ways to reduce the noise levels as it was deafening to most of us at the table and really negatively impacted our night . The food and staff were superb which somewhat made up for the deafening noise levels.

What a superb restaurant. Despite the months and months of lockdown, uncertainty, etc., Eschalot still managed to turn on an exceptional lunch service last Saturday, 6th November 2021. Inventive and original menu, wonderful tastes, thoughtful wine list and professional service of the highest standard. The restaurant showcases a menu of inventive share plate offerings, with a selection of unique and inspired cocktails which won't at all disappoint.
The service staff are not only immaculately presented, but have knowledge of the menu, are attentive, friendly and make you feel at home.
Every dish is plated with purpose and presents as a piece of art, and tastes equally, if not better than it looks!
Our only regret, that we didn't leave room for dessert...but on the plus side, this is simply another reason for a return visit.
And we plan on many more, to make our way through the menu and revisit old favourites.

We celebrated my daughter's 40th birthday on a freezing cold Highlands day at this wonderful venue. The cheery fire kept us warm and we had so much fun together as we enjoyed the 'Chef's Feedme' Menu. The girls also tried several of the interesting Cocktails on offer, which looked amazing.

We had a group of 8. Lucky enough to score a private room. We were asked at the time of booking to choose between 2 set menus as we were a large group. This turned out to be fantastic. The ‘Chef Feed Me’ was outstanding. Service was excellent. We had one person with dietary requirements which was no trouble. After a long awaited anniversary dinner, we finally were able to dine at Eschalot. From start to finish was absolutely phenomenal, we had small and large share plates and the one thing my partner and I kept talking about was the octopus. If you’re a seafood lover than you must try the octopus and the gin infused salmon. We will be coming back again, thank you for the amazing hospitality and delicious dishes and cocktails.

We loved our lunch at Eschalot last Saturday. Every course was delicious and the service was excellent as were the observations to current covid restrictions. We thoroughly enjoyed our whole experience at Eschalot. It was our first family dinner together (6 of us) in several months and our first time at Eschalot. The team at Eschalot blessed us with a private room to ourselves - which was great for this occasion. The service was impeccable (we felt welcome and special), the food was tasty, succulent, moreish, varied and plentiful. (I'm not normally a foodie so I don't know what adjectives to use here - I just know we enjoyed it). We had the chef's feed me special and I would thoroughly recommend that to any group. We managed to eat it all - which I didn't think we would when it was all brought out, but it was just so good, we kept grazing. We all felt satisfied but not over-stuffed. If you're stopping anywhere near Berrima, Eschalot is a must. If you're not stopping near Berrima - its worth the trip.

We had our work Christmas party here this year, and everyone is still raving about how much of a fantastic experience they had - a massive achievement with a large varied group of people and tastes! Eschalot have really hit the perfect balance of fine dining quality and service, while being unpretentious, casual and open. We had the Feed Me share menu - every dish was amazing in its own right (a lot of favourites there!), and everyone had plenty to eat. Best way to be able to try a little bit of everything and really get the greatest experience of what Eschalot has to offer.

If you are looking for an exceptional dining experience - Eschalot is it. It didn't need to be a special event, we went on a rainy, boring Sunday, took the only spot left at 2.30pm for a late lunch - and had one of the best dining experiences .... ever! The service, the inventive but nourishing menu, the home grown organic produce, and the wine list - all just amazing. Do yourself a favour, if you haven't already tried Eschalot, do.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Eschalot and the food + wine was terrific. Couple of improvements would be too ensure the Ladies toilet door had an auto close mechanism unfortunately my seat had a view directly into the bathroom and the door was left open often. The disabled access to the restaurant could be greatly improved with a disabled drop off option at the rear rather than via the stairs and better disabled facilities in the bathrooms.

Eschalot is one big tease - everything takes you right up to the edge but not quite over it. The flavours are quite complex but each dish appears to be missing that final hurrah.
For example, the wagyu beef was beautifully cooked - the smoky chargrilled outside leaving a perfectly crunch that instantly melts in your mouth, and the inside was consistently medium rare that only fine dining restaurants can achieve. However, the accompanying sauce was a disappointment to such an expertly cooked steak.
The pork belly had a beautiful play on textures - soft interior mixed with crunchy accompaniments and a delicious flavour profile but the pork was slightly overcooked, and the dish needed more sauce.
The kingfish ceviche was the highlight of the day - it was one of the dishes that shows the true potential of this restaurant. From the first bite, it felt extremely refreshing, like spreading in the spring water. Even though the sauce packed a punch, it still felt light and airy in the mouth.
At the end of the day, this is an expensive experience where you walk away feeling all the better for it. Definitely worth coming back to have another try.

Superb food, atmosphere and service. I rarely make extravagent statements but we had a wonderful afternoon at Eschalot. It was a meeting place between the Blue Mountains and Canberra and perfect for our pre-Christmas feast. The Chef's choices were excellent, in particular baked snapper, slow cooked lamb, crispy chats, citrus dressed greens. Our waiter was truly professional, proof that good service is an art. Thank you.

Excellent food and service! This place is particularly suitable for special events. It is located in a nice building in Berrima, easy to access from Sydney and Southern Highlands. While it is a bit far from Sydney to drive for dinner, it is worth it. We had a chef’s menu which was nicely balanced and presented. If you can, stay in Berrima for night and enjoy the town after.

I was really impressed with the food on my first visit - they forgot to bring one our main dishes but it was taken off the bill so a hiccup deftly managed and we left well fed. Turned into a highly anticipated pilgrimage, to spend a weekend in the highlands, JUST to visit Eschalot. Sadly, I shan’t be going back again. We had dinner on Saturday night, another mistake with our order and on questioning whether what we had received was what we had ordered we were patronised with “this is delicious too, I can get you what you ordered but it will take 25 minutes” anyone regular knows their table timings are strict. We were offered a ramekin of the sauce accompanying the alternative dish. No other compensation was offered and feedback provided was ignored. I suspect too popular now to care about the dissatisfaction of one table.

Overall, a lovely experience. We enjoyed excellent food and generous servings in the degustation menu, and staff were friendly and attentive.
Only thing we would change in the menu is that the first course includes a substantial and filling charcuterie - if we are paying for degustation experience, we would expect to be sampling the skill of the chefs in every course - not just slices of produce and bread, however good the quality.
Dessert course was very good, but slippery components served on a large flat plate with one spoon could lead to irritation as we chased it around the plate !

We experienced the restaurant in a regional COVID time, so obviously they were operating under restrictions. Overall the ambiance was very good. The owner (?) who greeted us was very professional. We found the service very good but obviously some staff were either inexperienced or anxious. The food was fine - the gnocchi was superb; the beef slow cooked good but over spiced to our tastes: the sides were creative and the wines we chose were excellent and very well priced - a real plus.
As locals we are very happy to have such great dining options in our area. We would recommend locals try it and support it.

Beautiful old property with many rooms used for serving which allows for a little extra privacy as you will only have a few tables in each room.
We’ve only been once and had a delicious gin smoked salmon and main meal lamb shoulder. Servings were generous so no room for dessert.
Also had a beautiful local Pinot noir. I thought the wine list was very fairly priced for a restaurant of this quality.
All up the food and wine were just under $200 for two.

I have wanted to dine at Eschalot for many years and decided to have a weekend in Berrima and finally dine at this rustic restaurant.
A cold night and we were welcomed into the restaurant foyer with a warm log fire and soon shown our table. We chose a selection of small and large plates to share and the servings were very generous. The wine list is extensive. We had food left over and the waitress offered to pack it for us to enjoy later.
What a wonderful restaurant and we had a fantastic experience. Great food, wine, wait staff and atmosphere. We will be back.

We visited Eschalot to celebrate our wedding anniversary. It turned out to be a very appropriate and enjoyable way to mark this occasion. Firstly, the ambiance was faultless. I loved being in 'the front room', where only tables of 2 were accommodated. This created a level of intimacy not possible where there are large groups. Conversely, we noticed large groups in other rooms where they could relax and enjoy their evening.
The food was divine and contradicts the general perception that fancy restaurants deliver small servings. We followed the wait staff advice and shared our generous dishes, struggling to get through what we'd ordered.
The other aspect we appreciated was the open way it was encouraged to take left overs home. And we were very happy with this advice as it meant we could appreciate the delicious and tender lamb shoulder on another night.

Winners of a Chef's Hat for ten years in a row the food we had here was at the cutting edge of Australian Cuisine, cooked with finesse and presented with flair.
The service was attentive and cheerful. The decision to open in Berrima must be paying off (the twice cooked soufflé has been on the menu for 13 years!) but they could easily hold their own in Surry Hills.
We paid $80 for three excellent courses and a side of seasonal veg (which was, itself, a tasty dish). Wine by the glass around $12 for an excellent selection of mostly Australian Boutique wines.

We booked this place to take some out of town visitors out unfortunately our babysitter was not able to help, so we had to bring our kids. I can honestly say we have never been this welcome, accommodated and well looked after in a lovely restaurant. Amazing food experience with a superb wine list. I reserved a table for 14 people and elected to have the seasonal menu. The guests did nothing but rave about the selection of dishes with accompanying sides.
I've been to Eshalot three times within the last year and can categorically state: "The staff are amazing, well versed in the menu, and attentive to guests needs".
I regularly host international guests in Canberra and will reserve a table on a weekend for them once travel restrictions are lifted.
Our family are looking forward to a winter lunch or dinner when the season is upon us, just to experience the ambience of the restaurant in winter.

We had lunch here on a Sunday deciding to opt for 3 entrees , 1 main and 2 desserts for 2 people. The whole experience was great. We loved every single meal we chose, the portion sizes were very generous and the dishes were beautifully presented. The service was also great and was never waiting on anything. We were greeted at the door and immediately shown to our table. They do have seating allocation times so when booking you have a set booking time and need to be finished to allow for next seating. Given the sizes of the meals and number of dishes you want to order it would have been nice to be able to spread it out a little bit more. But overall was great and would highly recommend and I would definitely return.

Amazing food with really great ambience. The waiters are very attentive without being over the top and they cater to everyone’s needs. We had the tasting menu which was excellent value, walking away not feeling hungry at all. One of our diners was vegan and they changed his plates to suit him and he said it was excellent. The tasting menu is also all gluten free which made it very convenient for GF diners. I was also told that most things on the main menu are also GF which made it very easy. Pricing is also reasonable especially with their large portions. I highly recommend this restaurant for its amazing food, staff and their care towards dietary requirements.

I had waited decades to visit this iconic venue and the opportunity arose on Sunday for lunch with Sydney friends.
We started with the most delicious little bread loaf and whipped truffle butter and ordered two starter plates and shared two generous sides. Sadly, there wasn't room for dessert.
The flavours, textures and quality were faultless.
My octopus with a blueberry reduction and pork belly with fruit undertones were unbelievably tender.
Service was prompt and cheerful and the history of the beautiful sandstone building was appreciated.

This is a charming safe place to eat. The restaurant is a series of rooms in an old sandstone cottage. So you can hear each other speak and feel your physically distant enough from other diners. We enjoyed exquisite gnocchi with vegetables, sensational moist fish with a tasty crumbed crust, and a generous beetroot salad. Beautifully presented desserts were followed by great coffee. We met the charming and highly skilled chef who came out to talk to us. The rain fell outside while we were cosy inside enjoying the view of Berrima from a deep window. Really a memorable meal. The only comment was that I think there was only one seating and it was supposed to start at 5:45 and though people were there from 5:30 everyone had to wait until 5:45 to come in. Great service and one of the best meals we have enjoyed for a long time. We had the Chef’s Choice menu at $85 per person. The entrees of Kingfish Crudo, the Cauliflower and Prawn on Betel Leaf, while excellent, were beaten by the Chicken, Slow Cooked Lamb and Blue Eye Cod in a cucumber and dill sauce. The vegetables, especially the pumpkin soaked in Port with cranberries and the roasted potatoes were fabulous, as was the Sancerre we chose to accompany our meal.

Lovely ambiance but food was disappointing. I got the 3 point lamb rack. Unfortunately it was so rare and the fat wasn't rendered at all. It was chewy and was hard to cut through with a knife. It was very unpleasant and I couldnt finish it. We also had the swordfish which was lovely and the 400gram steak. The steak was quite chewy but the flavour of the sauce was nice. All meat dishes came out luke warm, not hot. The side dishes were the star which is disappointing when paying $50 for a steak.
Our waitress was lovely but clearly inexperienced. Which is ok! We all need to start somewhere. But it did contribute to not having the greatest experience overall. We had to ask for our empty plates and glasses to be taken away between courses. And we had to ask for knives and forks when our main meals came out. Disappointing but was lovely to go to a restaurant for the first time in months.

Most recently, we ate at Eschalot over the long weekend.
We ordered the Eschalot Experience (6 course degustation) and every dish was incredible! From the succulent pork belly, to the delicate and delicious kingfish to the lemon tart for desert, this menu is a real winner.
5 stars are not enough, you simply must eat here!

Berrima is a good stop between Sydney and Canberra; and we were pleasantly surprised to find Eshallot. The building alone is impressive and preserved in its 19th century design. The interior decor is very pleasing. More importantly, the greetings when we arrived for a late Sunday lunch was very welcoming. We had several shared plates; and, I highly recommend if you wish to have a good taste of several dishes. The shared plate servings are generous and delicious.
