Comments of Marta Osteria

This was incredible, came for a birthday party and I have to say this is some of the best Italian food I've ever had!
The octopus had a perfect char and melted in your mouth, pasta seeped flavour with each bite, the fried gnocchi had an amazing crunch and the octopus stuffed fried zucchini flower was to die for.
10/10. Definitely going back

In one of the most successful restaurant pivots in a crisis, MARTA Osteria has rolled out their weekend Roman-style bakery to appease weekday boredom while we all work and study from home. With a clear COVIDSafe plan in place, the staff are inside the restaurant, and the patrons widely spaced in a pedestrian square, queuing a metre-and-a-half apart for crisp Italian pastries and gelato plucked from a gelato cart.
Owner-chef Flavio Carnevale was a baker before he was a chef, and gee it shows in airy, chewy, salt-crusted focaccia with Italian mortadella and provolone encased within. Even better is an airy round of focaccia studded with blistered cherry tomatoes and anchovies for a big umami kick. Sfogliatine sourdough puff pastry is created into crisp sandwiches with prosciutto and cheese.
To finish there are maritozzi – sweet brioche buns filled with cream – that are pleasant in texture and not overly sweet. Though the shattery pastry millefoglie with golden mascarpone and blueberries is hard to beat for your work from home elevenses. The five items came to $54, which isn’t cheap for pastries, but when everything hits the mark and the restaurant is able to keep all their staff working through Sydney’s second lockdown, I am happy to pay it.
A. I.
Best Italian pastry in Sydney! Always make me come back for more. Be early as possible for weekend, always long queue but fast and friendly service. Very recommended!
M.
This is a comment on the baked goods, not the restaurant.
My friend introduced me to this Italian pastry - Sfogliatelle. Even after seeking guidance from Google, I still don’t know how to pronounce it. Something like "sfohl-ya-TEL-le"
According to Google, it is made from a thin, kneaded dough, with a layer of lard/fat, rolled up into a cigar shape, chilled and then cut into the required pieces. For each piece, create a hollow for the filling and then bake.
It is interesting - layers of thin, leaf-like, flaky, "dryish", crust enveloping a filling (custard, pistachio etc.) that is not overly sweet. Definitely something to try.

Best Italian pastry’s, Great for a weekend adventure! Super fresh, incredibly delicious and worth the wait. I recommend you coming earlier on weekends as there is always a long queue but it moves relatively fast and the service is friendly. The bakery opens 8.30am on weekends. We got there at 10:30am and there was still plenty pastries left over and they are constantly baking so it’s always fresh and warm! We got (pictured) sour cherry and pistachio Sfogliatelle which I highly recommend, ham, cheese and truffle Sfogliatelle style croissant - also highly recommend! Spinach, ham, cheese and egg roll, good but wouldn’t urgently get again. (Not pictured): custard croissant (highly recommend) and 2 coffees came to around $59. Highly recommend !
K. A.
One of the best italian Sydney has to offer.
Quality ingredients - authentic Roman - great vibe. It was our 12th visit 🤪 so it stood the time of visit time and time again.
Wish it was closer to the beaches 🤤
E. G.
Fantastic bakery. Focaccia schnitzel sandwich was incredible and the pastries equally delicious. The only small tip I would give is put a menu out for people in the queue to look at - it was hard to know what everything was when we got to the counter which meant we had to ask the guy loads of questions about what everything was. Otherwise delightful and will be back weekly!! 😋
A. L.
Yes. Amazing. Try everything! Also go early (before 11am) so you can try their cream stuffed rolls and delicious focaccias before they run out!

Marta is a restaurant in Rushcutters bay, focused on bringing culina Romana, the traditional cuisine of Rome.
The Italian restaurant focuses on using fresh Australian produce to make some delicious dishes, whether it be gnocchi, lasagne, pappardelle, parmigiana, porchetta or even osso bucco. They also have a great range of wines and spritzers.
Unfortunately due to the Covid19 restrictions, you cannot dine in, but takeaway is available. Marta has also turned into a weekend a Roman bakery. They’ve got plenty of loaves of bread (from grain to rye and olive), as well as focaccia slides or pizzettas. The sweets counter has decadent cream buns, cannoli, and ricotta or custard filled pastizzis.
It is open very Saturday and Sunday from 9am. We were there about 8:45 and the line already had 10 people lined up. People are pretty good at the social distancing. I was keen on savoury but after the 30 minute wait or so, they had only brought out the sweet stuff. The staff said more savoury foods ilwould be made about an hour later.
We tried the sfogliatelle, a flaky and extremely crispy. So much so, this would have won the crunch test on Masterchef. The crunchy outer shell shaped pastry was filled with prosciutto and house-made ricotta. We also tried the sweet version with ricotta and an orange rind filling, in the same crispy casing, sprinkled with icing sugar
J. C.
I haven’t been to the restaurant but the Marta Bakery open every weekend is truly amazing! The focaccia, cannoli and sfogliatella are incredible
A. L.
Visited the bakery on a Sunday after hearing good things about it. I was not disappointed! The weekend bakery has a good range of delicious pastries and breads, and had to try the beautiful sfogliatelle plus an almond croissant.
The sfogliatelle was divine! The pastry is a glorious crunchy texture on the outside and filled with a delicious creme - I had the pistachio and would definitely recommend. There was also Nutella, and apple flavour among others.
The almond croissant was also lovely - soft and with a little crunch, the soaked filling also a good croissant to pastry ratio.
Next time I'll try a focaccia too. Vegetarian options and Gluten free option also available.
S. F. L.
Dined here casually with a small group of friends. Ordered a few starters to share, egg eggplant parmigiana stood out. The other notable starter was the deep fried gnocchi.
Marta specialises in Roman style pizza, which is differentiated with its dough. The dough is rested for 72 hours and is made with less oil and more water, claiming it’s lower in calories. The dough was denser than the wood fired oven pizzas that are from Naples, I ordered the one with mortadella, one of my fave Italian meats. I found the pizza overall very doughy, and too heavy unfortunately.
For dessert tried the panna cotta which was satisfying with its gentle wobble and stewed apple.
J. T.
Marta is a fantastic destination tucked within Rushcutters Bay. Service is polished and the atmosphere is energetic even early in the week. The wine list has a vast selection of Italian varietals that pair perfectly with the balanced menu that features a strong Roman focus.
Definitely an underrated gem in Sydney's Italian food scene- highly recommend.
P. Y.
I picked up some very delicious baked goods over the weekend - to note the focaccia! More so, to the amazing woman serving us, thank you for making the simple act of picking up food a happy moment.
A.
We enjoyed nice pizzas, pastries and coffee in the outdoor seating.
L.
We enjoyed a beautiful traditional Roman meal here on a Saturday night. The service was great and food was quickly delivered despite a full restaurant. The pasta was perfectly aldente and clearly handmade, the pizza crispy Roman style with beautiful cheeses, and the sides were well seasoned. The cacio e pepe pasta in particular was a standout! Definitely an Italian gem in Sydney.
M. L.
Beautiful food, slightly on the pricey side. The pasta was well made, the tiramisu was good, though not the best we’ve had. Service was a little slow when it got busy. Pannacotta a winner
J. M.
Great Italian food, lovely atmosphere. Great place for dinner dates. Bar seating is best. Highly recommended when you're in the city.
J. H.
Best pasta I’ve ever had. Portion sizes for entrees were a bit unfair but quality of food prevailed. Will definitely be back
J. M.
Always the best. From the beautiful bakery on the weekends to the restaurant experience, this place always delivers. Amazing food and service.
N. A.
Delicious food & wine.. Gotta lot of love for Flavio & the team @ Marta.. thank you for always looking after us.
J. K.
Your potatoes are getting worse — despite leaving this feedback again and again. Please fix. :) Pasta is nice.
A. T.
Soooo delicious! Would highly recommend - great food and wine!! Dare I say... best Italian in Sydney
A. J.
Had dinner with friends, nice menu and the potion is just right! Not too big not too small but ravioli is bit smaller than expected
S. A.
A fantastic bakery in the Advanx complex that serves traditional Italian desserts, Breads and sandwiches. The coffee is fantastic too. Worth a visit if you are in the area.
A. C.
The only way to describe our experience at Marta was...unusual. The food is good, nothing not of this world, but good. The pastries in the day time are nice too. But the service is erm... bizarre, the waiters a unique blend of male archetypes, quite intense, almost rude, almost nice. It was hard to pick. And the drinks service was all out of whack. We had cocktails, beers and our wine all at the same time.
With so many great Italians in the area. And a few new ones too. I can’t say we’d go back in a hurry. But definitely a night myself and our group will remember...
D. A.
We went there last Thursday night and had an outstanding experience.
Our waiter was high energy, super friendly and was even humming while changing plates. He recommended a great wine too (St. Magdalener Alto Adige DOC 2019)
We had the anchovies bruschetta, the daily special octopus with mashed peas, the PARMIGIANA and some special pasta with spinach. The most outstanding dish for me was the PARMIGIANA and the octopus, not burned and just perfectly done. As for dessert, we had the MARTAMISU’ NOT A TIRAMISU and some coconut, chocolate ice cream ball.
M. O.
Best Italian style focaccia's & treats this side of Roma! Coffee was good too🙏
N. B.
Their pizzas and vaked goods are great! Try the sfogliatelle and the mortadella oven baked Roman bread!
J. A.
I can see why people queue to buy takeaway from this place during lockdown. It's unique in its offerings for the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney. You don't have to travel out west or to Norton St in little Italy; Marta's offers a great range of sweet and savoury dishes to satisfy most people. The caramelized onion and parmesan bread is a winner. So is everything else I bought.
N. c.
I love this chic little joint. We came here with my partners Italian family for lunch. We all shared pizzas, arancini, fried gnocchi, and some pasta. All of the food was excellent as usual. Even nonno and nonna approves. The fried gnocchi was my favourite entree it literally tasted like little pillows of heaven 😋😋😋! Thanks for having us, we will be back!
C. T.
Spectacular restaurant. The service was friendly but professional from the moment we walked through the door. Wait staff were very attentive and gave great recommendations on food/wine pairing.
Would rate the food 10/10!
S. B.
Been very hit & miss lately. Usually outstanding food but have recently ordered the lasagna and eggplant parmigiana which had ZERO flavour, literally tasted as though it was missing salt. Have received several incorrect uber eats orders, and one tiny gluten free pizza. Super disappointing for what was once a favourite.
J. G.
I had the gelato but would love to eat here one day.
B. C.
Everything from the bakery was delicious, the savoury sfogliatelle is just delightful.
M. A.
Good food and wine but what’s better than their food is their second to non customer service.
M. H.
My husband and I dined here recently and loved everything about it. The food was simple but delicious, the service attentive but not overwhelming and the atmosphere was great. Highly recommend starting with the Romano off the antipasto menu - a saucy, tasty tomato pizza with a drizzle of olive oil. Pastas were amazing as well, only wish we had left room for dessert. We’ll definitely be back.
P. T. P. C.
I’ve dined at Marta many times before and it is never short of amazing, food and service is always exceptional and it remains as our favourite restaurant. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this venue to anyone. Absolutely brilliant!!
b. G.
Great Italian place in the Eastern suburbs. This is the old Popolos sydney. Seems to have lifted up in quality. A great selection. Dessert was Devine.
J. R.
Love Marta. Was an absolute amazing experience I was so touched by how special they made everything for my partner and I! WIll definitely be returning and telling all our friends to enjoy such a wonderful place.
J. M.
I AM OBSESSED WITH MARTA AND WILL TALK ABOUT IT WITH ANYONE WHO WILL LISTEN!
The borders are closed, we are once again in lockdown.. but never fear, Marta is here to bring you a little slice of Italy right onto your doorstop. The focaccia with provolone and mortadella is sublime.. crunch for days. The sfogliatelle.. I’m smiling while looking at Mt Vesuvius framed with bright blue sky as crumbs make themselves at home over my shirt. And the cannoli? La dolce vita. Rain, hail or shine, get yourself to Marta one morning to experience the best Italian treats in town … but please, leave a focaccia for me!
G. G.
I have been to the Marta twice and enjoyed it every time. Love the location and sitting at an outside table is wonderful in the early evening. The service is superb and the staff really know their wines. I had the fish of day every visit, which totally melted in my mouth. I took an old friend visiting from Paris and he was very impressed with Marta. I'm doing a gym challenge at the moment and found it very easy to choose healthy whole food options.
K. D.
As someone who loves cheese based pasta, this restaurant was great. This pasta was their signature pasta dish and it was amazing. Really authentic
i. f.
We ordered two different pasta dishes and they were delicious but, the hot salami pizza? It is an ultra spicy pizza. We couldn't have more than a little piece so don't order it unless you like really really really like spicy food.
A. B.
Great Italian restaurant. Excellent food with a bit of hit and miss though. Grilled vegetables were not grilled properly. Good Italian wines. The waiters give good advice on wine selection. Excellent deserts. Pricey, about $75 pp with a bottle of wine for 3 people. No BYO. Nice music and ambiant atmosphere. Not everybody likes very low lighting but it was OK for me. Will be back.
A. K.
The pistachio sfogliatelle and tomato and olive focaccia were to die for. Thanks for my little bonus orange anf ricotta mini sfogliatelle - even more crunchy and delightful.
M. Z.
My partner and I decided to celebrate with a lunch. We were lucky enough to get one of the last lunches before the chef changes over. Everything was delicious, the staff was fantastic and the place is just heavenly. If you want somewhere special to go, this is it. Looking forward to seeing what the new chef has in store.
J. B.
Good service and mostly tasty food, though one of our main pasta dishes was missing any seasoning/flavour. Liked it but wouldn't rush back.
K. C.
Had a 5 star meal here with the family this week. Service was fine together with some of the best Italian dishes we have eaten across Sydney.
S. T. A.
Our new favorite for catching up with friends. Great food, and be sure to check out the specials. Lots of Italian wine, so be adventurous. And service that is helpful and responsive. Make a reservation if there are more than 2 of you.
W. H.
Great food and being open for lunch on a Friday meant that our group was able to enjoy the share plates outside on a sunny day. Authentic Roman cuisine. Aperols were delicious!
R. R.
Excellent!
Delicious food from the bakery in the morning
Fast and friendly service pick up in the night.
Can’t wait to see this guys reopening!
j. b.
This place is brilliant! A really fabulous spin on classic and contemporary Italian dishes. Some serious thought and effort has gone into the menu and the daily specials. Marta is one of those places where you could eat the entire menu from start-to-finish. A great summer lunch or dinner venue with both indoor-or outdoor options. An innovative wine list, attentive service and a very relaxed atmosphere. Seriously, one of the better casual dinning restaurants in Sydney.
L. M.
Pasta's are definitely the highlight, and the side of potatoes were amazing! As they mention in advance don't expect a standard pizza, much lighter (no tomato sauce etc). On the pricier side. We ordered 2 mains but they didn't arrive at the same time
S. T.
Just finished excellent pasta and pizza at Marta! Everything from the food to the service was fantastic.....that is, until my husband and I ordered 2 cheeses to finish with our wine. We waited at least 20 minutes to receive 2 very tiny wedges of cheese. The only other items on the cheese plate were a pile of crispy flat bread and 1 slice of tomato. We felt so ripped off at paying $24 for the 'cheese plate' and let down after such a great meal that we didn't leave a tip. Sadly, that penalized our hardworking great waiter and not the restaurant. Not sure if we would go back again.
H. T.
This is a little Italian place with the best service I've experienced in Sydney. Food is great, staff super helpful. Will definitely go back.
a.
The pizza and wine were good. The pasta was slightly undercooked but still tasty. The major disappointment though was the tiramisu which was essentially whipped cream, bottled chocolate sauce and 2 hard biscuits for $12! Way too sweet and definitely NOT tiramisu.
S. R.
We been there twice since opened and we truly loved it each time!
The food is simply amazing - tasty Roman style dishes, from the Supplí to the veal meatballs with soft polenta as starters, schiacciate if you feel like pizza or amazing fettuccine with blue eye cod and cherry tomatoes... We are really looking forward to be back and try it all!
And the Martamisù for dessert is a must try!
J. H.
Went there with 2 mates for dinner food was simple but nice ,ordering system was a bit strange for a restaurant that seems to pitch itself to the top end of town. Staff were friendly and always there when you needed something. Will go back .
A. P.
Amazing lockdown bakery. Worth the cals, every time! Highlight is the mortadella focaccia. Yummm
S. M.
Excellent service, delicious food. Highlights were.. the gnocchi fritti to start and the famous pinza/pinsa dough pizzas, which are way easier to digest than regular pizza dough. We asked for chili sauce and MAN, IT WAS HOT!!! To finish, Marta's roman style tiramisu with a rich chocolate sauce.
I will be back for sure.
A. Z.
The food was fresh, light, full of flavour & quality. The service was warm, friendly & cheeky 😉. Coffee was awesome & recommend you have it with your entree or the complimentary bread they serve. Prices very reasonable, great atmosphere.
S. B.
I am disappointed that I can only give five stars in this review, otherwise I would have given a six stars rating. Coming from Rome as background, this was for me like being back home for dinner. Loved everything! Authentic roman dishes from carciofi alla giudea to focaccia and tonnarelli cacio and pepe. Friendly Italian staff. Good wine selections and also desserts won't disappoint. Will come back with other Italian friends!
A. d. M.
Marta Osteria Sydney is a lovely restaurant tucked away in Rushcutters Bay. Next to the Mini/BMW car stand, it offers a delicious menu with choices for all people. The staff are efficient and very pleasant and helpful. The setting is relaxed with a wonderful atmosphere. Highly recommended.
t.
Lovely relaxing atmosphere. Marta has beautiful fresh Italian food that you don't see on every menu. Would highly recommend for any occasion. The staff are warm and friendly
S. B. B.
Another fantastic meal at “the new local” Marta. My only reservation about singing the praises of this incredible restaurant is that of everyone realises how fantastic it is we’ll struggle to get a table! The hospitality from Ian and team is genuine, generous and effortless - all the best parts of Italian culture and dining just around the corner!!
Z. S.
Gorgeous interiors and bar serving enticing cocktails. The entrees are yummy and inventive and the desserts ridiculously good. Loving the outdoor seating! Can’t wait for a spritz in the summer sunshine.
E. B.
Marta is a nice elegant and balanced Italian restaurant, the service is no second to any other restaurants and the food is of great quality, the menu is more of a classic approach, anyway they are able to recreate classic dish n an impeccable way. Surely a restaurant we will go back to especially if friends are visiting us.
V. T.
Excellent service, food is on another level and specially the Lasagne and Linguine are the best I tasted in a long time
Definitely going back there
L. Z.
Food was delicious! It's a unique place, whilst I love music , it was too loud so made it hard for you to hear the waiter.
C. M.
Roman food, as original as it gets.
Went for dinner with a handful of friends, the atmosphere was great: elegant yet relaxed, with friendly staff. The food was just outstanding. There’s a lot in the menu that must be tried, the highlights for me were Schiacciata with mortadella (not a pizza) and tonnarelli cacio e pepe.
M. C.
Marta is very likely one of the best authentic Italian restaurants in Sydney. Forget the checkered red and white tablecloths with the fake bottiglione, this is the real deal. Typical & traditional Roman fares like carciofi alla Giudia, tonnarelli cacio e pepe. Oh, and their roman-style pizza! Flavio, the owner, is one of a rare breed: he truly love what he's offering, it's not just a fad like many other pretend-Italian establishments in town. Give this restaurant a go, you'll be happy you did!
T. W.
Very good food! Very good coffee!
L. T.
Hit and miss. My risotto was so heavily salted it was inedible (and I love salt!!), chocolate tarte was bland, tiramisu was 90% cream. My dining companions said their meals (market fish and lamb) were great.
M. P.
Exquisite food, everyone very welcoming and friendly! Marco made a very special cocktail definitely didn't let me down. Great experience lovely place, will 100% come back!
L. F.
We book our board directors dinners at Marta. We used to spread them around but now they only want to go to Marta. We love this place.
The food, the wine, the location, the service - it ticks every box for us.
M. K.
The real deal! Classic and classy Italian meals with outstanding service and a genuine ‘Roman’ atmospheric. Enjoy Flavio’s hospitality and just soak up the ambience! Thoroughly recommended.
E. E.
I have heard mixed reviews but I really like this place and go here often. The pasta is excellent and the pizza is different but great. I also think it's authentic Lazio food.
M. A.
The ambiance is great, nice service and pizzas are great. The rest of the menu is pretty basic though. The wine card is pretty good. It’s a pretty good local restaurant.
M. R.
Delicious local gem, consistently tasty Italian home-style cooking with plenty of amazing options on offer.
H.
$4 coffee cream sfog
M. M.
Marta is not a casual dining..! Marta is an experience that brings you back to Rome with history, passion, traditions and knowledge.
Absolutely marvellous! Thank you Flavio for the special evening ☺️.
T. T.
Amazing food, great location, friendly service. What more could you want? Highly recommend!
R. W.
Fantastic restaurant. Service, food, atmosphere was 5 stars. We just came back from Rome (where we ate very well) and can say that Marta is ahead of the game
N. B.
Best. Pizza. Experience. Ever!!! Anyone ordering pizza from anywhere else right now - stop it. I'll never go anywhere else again. What a treat.
F. P.
Absolutely delicious! Would highly recommend - fast and friendly service!!
M. T.
I love this place, the food is amazing, they have great wine and the staff are super attentive and friendly.
Will be back for more of the cuttlefish fettuccine!
C. T.
Great food. Takeaway pizza a regular. Excellent service.
G. M.
Nice atmosphere, good food, good wine list, to be fair one of my favourite places in Sydney
N. C.
Fine Italian food, Pizzas were very good, and the service friendly and down to earth. Look forward to returning.
d. n.
It's good but not great.
The service is good, the food always disappoints. It feels that only the branding has changed but not the essence of the place. Pizza's are a yes, Pastas are a No.
P. Z.
A fine Italian restaurant that specialises in Roman cuisine - excellent service delivering memorable food backed by a professional cellar.
M.
Lovely fresh decor, just in time for Spring. And speaking of Spring, the Schiacciata Primavera was truly YUM. I can also highly recommend the skate wings. Salute!

Very classy restaurant, really good. A little more expensive than usual restaurant, and be aware to maybe book this one because it can be full booked as it is a little place.
