Yesterday I got to take part in a Dumplings and Things masterclass with the executive chef of Spice Temple Andy Evans and his team. Chef Deli demonstrated the art of making dumplings from scratch and then Chef Andy showed us the signature Spice Temple fried rice. It was such an amazing experience!! The staff were so friendly, it really was such a pleasure to be there and to meet everyone. The very next day (today) I made the dumplings and fried rice for my family, they loved it! I feel so special that I have had a one on one (it felt like that) with the head chef of my favourite restaurant and got to cook in his kitchen! So so amazing! Thank you, really!

Very good service! 👍 some of the dishes are impressive and quite similar to authentic chinese dishes. Nothing too spicy.
Love the entrance and creates a good vibe for something exotic. But can be quite dark/dim compared to Asian dining experience.
My favourite is the prawn cakes!!

One word: PHENOMENAL!
My partner and I had dinner at Spice Temple as a late Valentine’s Day celebration and we were absolutely blown away by the food, ambience, and especially the service! We were served by a lovely gentleman named Jack, who really elevated our dining experience. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and even spoiled us with some free limoncello cocktails at the end as it was also our anniversary. The raw yellowfin tuna was a solid 11/10 and the star dish of the evening 😍 We also ordered the prawn wontons and fried eggplant for entrees. For mains, we ordered the sweet and sour numbing pork, beef in ‘fire water’ and a side of steamed rice. Our dessert was the three milk cake. Every dish was amazing, and my partner and I were extremely happy by the end of it. When we asked for our leftovers to be packed for takeaway, Jack added a large steamed rice in there for free! When you eat at a restaurant with such amazing staff, it really elevates your dining experience and makes it something special. We can’t wait to be back. Thank you to the lovely staff for making it a wonderful night!

We picked the golden banquet menu and most meals were very delicious except prawn toast. I think that was quite ordinary
And brisket was bit on the dry side but overall it was good especially pork belly was sensational

Attended a 40th birthday dinner here. The cocktails, food, and ambience were amazing. The service was attentive without being intrusive. Was a perfect night out - I cannot wait to return
K. M.
Celebrated my husband’s birthday here and it was a truly wonderful experience. James, tending to us was attentive, pleasant and courteous, the ambience was perfect and the experience memorable.

Beautiful food and amazing service. Our waiter was Hannibal and just couldn’t have been more helpful. So nice to see it busy and full of people after Covid. Highly recommend

Interesting Chinese fusion dishes with lots of flavour. The sommelier knew their stuff which was great to pair with food. However, the dishes were one-dimensional, and all the spices ended up blending together without reprieve or change in flavour. Would like to see a greater variety of items on the menu blending to be a great dining experience, rather than just all spicy. It was also an anniversary, but waiters did not seem to care.

Great meal has by a group of ten.
Fixed menu which we all devoured and more than enough food.
Great service and enjoyable atmosphere.

TLDR: Had a good banquet experience.
Initially confused by the TV screen door, we found our way downstairs to the darkened dining room. While the room was dark, each table is well lit, so reading the menu and seeing dishes was very straightforward. We opted for the premium banquet, which is seasonal and likely to change regularly. In May 2021, it featured yellowfin tuna, smoked duck, wagyu beef, pipis, Peking duck baos, coral trout, and a supporting cast of salads and vegetables. The dishes were excellent, and each course a well balanced offering. We opted for wine by the 375mL carafe, accepting the waitress’s excellent pairing recommendation for a white and then a red. Each carafe gave us two generous glasses of wine. Service was attentive and helpful.

What an amazing place the food, wine list and service is top notch! Try the numbing wagyu beef and lamb pancakes, simply delicious

My team won a $1000 dinner incentive and we chose Spice Temple to spend up. It’s perfect for groups and if we didn’t spend on food we could always spend up on cocktails.
We ate:
Hot and numbing dry Wagyu beef $29 - this is normally the crowd wow, but not this night
Tea smoked ½ duck with mandarin pancakes 10pcs $49 - mandarin flavour was awesome
Prawn wontons with black vinegar and chilli 8 for $29
Northern style lamb and fennel dumplings 8 for $29
Guangxi style crisp roast pork belly with coriander, peanuts, red onion and sesame seeds $47 - my all-time fav dish and it did not disappoint
Stir fried Wagyu brisket, with chilli paste and lucky money dumplings $49 - so delicious
Kung Pao prawns Sichuan peppercorns, heaven facing chillies and cashews $49 - this may have been the dish of the night, so tasty!

We came here for our Wedding Anniversary last Friday night and although we had accidentally booked next Friday by mistake, the Maitre d was amazing and found us a great table on a very busy night. The food was incredible, and we had a fantastic time. Thank you again for noticing we were in a noisy spot and moving us without us having to say a word. Will definitely come again, and would give Six stars if we could :)

I have recently been back here since becoming vegan and they have quite a few, albeit unlisted, options for vegans. If you ask the staff they can assist in choosing vegan dishes but I’d say the crispy eggplant is my favourite.
Spice Temple is one of our favourite restaurants. Every time we have been there it’s delicious and excellent service. The restaurant ambience is very romantic and moody with the dim lights.
My husband’s absolute favourite dish is the dry and spicy numbing beef. The cocktails are lovely too. Also don’t miss the three milks cake if you like dessert. I can’t recommend Spice Temple enough. It’s expensive but worth it and the portions are usually quite large.
M. B.
This was my first time at Spice Temple and it was kind of hit or miss. The lamb pancake entree was amazing, whilst the chicken Kung Pao was just fine. The prawn steam dumplings were nothing special and then the spanned crab noodles were divine. The service was great, the wine list extensive, the cocktail list short and unimaginative. Really not worth the $$$, but still a good one time experience
T. C.
Went there for dinner on valentine’s day
We didn’t have a reservation and the restaurant didn’t accept walk-in that day. But we got a bar table so it’s ok.
The fried squid was good.
I really liked the steamed eggplant with 3 flavours.
The spicy chicken wings were fine. A bit salty and not spicy at all.
Then we had our Nanjing style pork hock. First, it’s not Nanjing style, not even close. Second, it’s extremely salty and sour. I could barely swallow it. So we asked the kitchen to take it back and the chef agreed. They took that dish off our bill.
The belt noodles were also very salty and we didn’t finish it.
Overall the food was ok, depending on what you order anyway. Not every dish is tasty even they look attractive in the pictures.
Service was great though otherwise I would only give a one or two-star rating.
R. D.
Delicious food as always. Very consistent. Service is immaculate, staff are friendly. Nice atmosphere and very conducive to conversation. 4 stars because to me dessert is everything and the dessert that came with the golden banquet was disappointing. Not a fan of liquorice and mint and there were no other options.
O. Y.
The restaurant had very little lighting, but somehow you could still easily see the food. This helped you feeling that it wasn't that crowded, while it was.
The food was all yummy, there wasn't a single dish that didn't taste great.
We ordered tea to have with the food which was also delicious and great quality.
The service was impeccable and we were served by the loveliest waitress. She was kind and extremely helpful. She also brought house made lemon zest chocolate which was original and yummy.
We will definitely visit again.
G.
On of my fav place to go to for amazing food in Sydney. Absolutely love the food here. Would definitely recommend their prawn toast and pippens.
Service is top notch.
They have a amazing collection of wines too to go with your food.
Overall, an exceptional experience.
J. C.
Dining at Spice Temple is always a great pleasure. My favourite thing about this restaurant has to be the generous portions. And the ambience a close second. I love their zodiac themed cocktails, my go-to is the Rooster! 😍 As all dishes are designed to share, don’t be shy to ask for a smaller portion if you’re keen to try a bunch of stuff on the menu. You must try the spice fried chicken wings! They remind me of crispy af KFC wicked wings but out of this world better. Other favourite dishes include the tuna with spicy orange oil, hot and numbing dry Wagyu beef (the complexities of this dish, wow!). The prawn wontons with black vinegar and chilli are oh so silky with super chunky filling. Plus classic faves like Kung Pao chicken and Hunan style pork belly are phenom!
R. Y.
The taste goes far from Chinese flavor. Great service and dining environment. To be honest I miss the taste of dishes 5 years ago at Spice Temple Melbourne.
L. K.
Food was spectacular! Delicious flavours and combinations like pork fennel dim sum, crab noodles and the pork belly plus a scrumptious cake for dessert. Extensive Wine list too!
R. C.
Our experience didn't start off very well... There was a mix up with our table reservation... Which they managed... Could be better with customer handling. The food was good. Authentic Chinese cuisine. Great flavours by way of fresh ingredients. Definitely on the more spicy side and very oily... But that could be because of the heavy Sichuan influence. The portions are generally large. The crispy fried quail was brilliant. The three milk cake for dessert was exceptional.
J. T.
This restaurant serves some of the tastiest Asian cuisine without overwhelming you with any one particular ingredient. Subtle and inspired. I cannot recommend enough.
A. W.
Great venue in the heart of Sydney CBD, with a fantastic northern Chinese menu and extensive wine list to compliment your dishes. The room itself is great, albeit dimly lit, but it all adds to the overall experience. Would strongly encourage you to book ahead on weekends.
J. G.
Excellent dimsums. Not so great kungpao chicken - too many chillies. And the vegetable fried rice was too salty. Its an expensive place - so service is expected to be good - which was but the food was a little disappointing.
A. Y.
Amazing food! The prawn wonton is definitely a must as well as the chicken wings, they will not disappoint!
Service is great with very friendly and helpful staff.
Booking is recommended as they are busy almost all the time.
W. M.
To make sure you do not miss out on table it is best to make a booking so that you are not disappointed. This restaurant is next door to Rockpool , the entrance is a bit hidden but if you see Rockpool then you know that it is next door to it and close by.
The lighting here is a bit subdued as to give it a bit of a romantic feel to it especially if you are having dinner.
If you are unsure of anything in the menu it is a good idea to ask one of the servers and they will explain the menu to you. If you are looking for the house specialities then they are written in red on the menu ,but you are also advised that they can be quite spicy. The spiciness is not felt straight away but it creeps up onto you while you are eating the meal. This was the way that our server explained it.
We decided to try to Strange Chicken but you have to be careful with this meal as it is quite spicy especially from the oil. You don't feel the spiciness until maybe 5 minutes later and it starts of making your tongue and lips tingle and when this happens it is best to stop eating it and try something else.
The Pork Belly was very delicious and flavoursome. The Wontons and Tofu are also quite delicious.
This restaurant is good to come to for a special occasion and for if you want to try something different.
J. T.
I came here on a 50% off voucher so went a bit wild.
The food was pretty good - I'd say it tasted like upmarket chinese cuisine with authentic flavours. Unfortunately, I don't think I would return again at full price as the prices are quite steep for Chinese cuisine.
The highlights were the scallops, pippis with black bean and chilli sauce, lobster and noodles in xo sauce (albeit there was strangely little lobster meat for what was supposed to be 1kg of lobster) and the kung pao prawns.
Dessert was average. The duck egg spring rolls were the highlight to try but the others weren't very memorable or special.
Service is impeccable. The waiters are super friendly and attentive and go out of their way to make sure you feel welcomed and knowledgeable on the menu.
D. E.
Fantastic service, great Sommelier and Wine list. Food was very good as well. Surely a bit pricy but overall a very good concept.
J. B.
Now an established Sydney landmark, Spice Temple's commitment to distinguished Chinese cuisine, served as sharing plates with an excellent wine and cocktail selection make it a must for those looking beyond the ordinary. This is a great place for small groups I order to maximise the benefits of sharing plates. Be mindful that the subterranean venue is all about the food not views.
M. L.
My husband and I come here every year for his birthday. The service, atmosphere, food and beverages is top notch. Consistently delicious. Our favourite dishes are the Numbing Wagyu Beef, Kung Pow Prawns among others. The cocktails are a delight as well, especially the Horse and the Rabbit. And do not forget the deserts, that Mandarin and the Peanut Parfait are beautiful. If you like it hot and spicy then Spice Temple is for you. In saying that they also cater for the less spice-loving people as well. Highly recommend and will be coming back next year.
J. S.
Excellent meal, decor and service. Jessie was especially good for table service, and thanks for the tip re the XO sauce on the clams, best ever. Expensive for a lunch but worth it as a special treat.
V.
This place is expensive but also worth the money. The set menu is okay, the a la carte is where all the gems are. Def try the chicken in strange flavor dressing and the Kung Pao with heaven facing chilies. Made my tongue go numb but I couldn’t resist eating more! Great cocktails too, and thanks chef for the complimentary dessert!
A. T.
Pretty incredible all around. The only thing I could mention is that it can get pretty dark in there. Especially when you are trying to take good photos! Other than that, the food was on point and the service was lovely. I would highly recommend the chicken ribs. Yum!
G. J.
The best food with great service. Both my husband and I were very impressed with recommendations from the waitress. Thanks for the free dessert it was wonderful as well.
A. P.
Was here for dinner on Sunday night and all I can say it absolutely amazing. Ambiance is great and very romantic. Service is amazing we had some notes on the booking and good to see all staff was across it. Food is so yum and great, good size portions for the price which is good so see at such a nice place. Will be back again.
R. S.
One of my favourite places to dine in Sydney. The menu is suited for all. Groups of 4 would make if much more enjoyable, order a selection and share.
Everything on the menu is devine. My personal favs, the pippies, hong kong squid, lobster, numbing duck or beef...and for dessert a must the three milk cake...its all they say about it and more.
I. R.
Amazing menu, fantastic staff and lovely restaurant :) I loved the set menu, but the a la carte options also amazing. Our waitress was lovely!! Highly recommend the eggplant dishes :)
E. T.
Absolutely love this place! The dark ambience and yummy cocktails makes it perfect for any intimate gatherings and special occasions.
The last couple of times I've been we only had meat but this time we went with a vegetarian friend and got to try a few vegetarian dishes as well and they were so damn good. Our picks are fried eggplant, fried chicken wings, kung pao chicken and fish drowned in heaven facing chillies. And don't forget the three milk cake!
For birthdays you can also pre-order a cake or a cupcake or you can also bring your own and pay $5 for service.
P. F.
Nice atmosphere with good quality food. Also the portions were fairly large which is a nice change. Be careful if you don’t like spicy food!!
A. M.
The BEST meal I’ve ever had in Sydney. I am a sucker for Szechuan but usually can’t have it as I’m intolerant to gluten, onions and garlic typically in most Chinese dishes. They had a special menu marking all of their gf, onion and garlic free dishes/ one’s they could alter which made ordering very easy. Pictured is the spicy tofu, fried rice, Kung pao prawns and the best dish of it all- the eggplant starter. My mom and I both agreed it was the best eggplant dish we’ve ever had.
S. C.
2021.11 Visit here again, service is much better than before, the staff who served us was so gentle and nice! I like their western style Chinese meals, interesting and delicious! Would come back soon!
G. T.
Great place, good service. The dishes are delicious. Well if you cannot eat spicy, do not order the hottest dishes. Price is not cheap.
M. W.
Wow.. the food was fantastic! The highlights were the wantons with black vinegar & chilli and their version of an Old Fashion (cocktail ). It was the best Old Fashion I have ever had. With a very large ice cube which was crystal clear. While it may seem trivial, the quality of the ice shows how much attention to detail they put in when making cocktails! We will definitely be back
j. o.
Been here many times.
This place never disappoints.
Great food atmosphere and service.
Hardest thing about this place is finding the hidden entrance!
A. S.
Drunken fish is spectacular theatrically and aromatically. I would definitely recommend. The pork belly is also deliciously crispy and rich and a must have. Lighting is pretty dim and moody, so remember to bring your glasses to read the menu!
A. P.
Stumbled into Spice Temple while looking for some cheap diner place. My first experience was that - The prices are steep! However, the food is amazing. We ordered Kung Pao Prawn and Beer Battered Chicken. Both the dishes were delicious.
The Kung Pao Prawn was little different from what I have had in India or States. Maybe that is how it is cooked in mainland China.
M. A.
The absolute best restaurant I’ve been to in Sydney! The staff is extremely lovely and efficient. We ordered too much food so they proposed us to have smaller portions which was a great idea. I didn’t have one dish that I didn’t like. I must admit that the entrees were my favorite, pickled cabbage and radish and the crispy eggplant seemed rather simple but had the most amazing taste 😍😍
Worth every single penny!
G. B.
Our first time. Excellent food, cool vibe, funky spiced negroni cocktail (worth a try), service pretty good, great dessert. Also caught up with our niece, Tash (happy birthday!), and her partner, Kieran. Would return.
A. L.
Amazing food, although a bit pricey. There was an issue with our booking and our waitress made us feel uncomfortable by rushing us. Don't rely on their online booking system, book by phone.
H. J.
Really nice upscale Chinese restaurant. Great decore and atmosphere for a romantic date. Priced on the higher end. They do not have wifi.
C. N.
Dark ambience, tasty Chinese dishes, some more spicy then others. Good selection of cocktails and wine.
a. k.
Went here for some cocktails with friends before dinner, reasonable priced and nice ambiance.
X. S.
Very good taste, it’s Chinese food in a very special style and fashion. I love it so is my mrs.
K. K.
Friendly service. Beautiful flavours. Accomodating staff. What more can you ask for!
C. C.
One of my favourite restaurants in Sydney. Consistently great food and service with an intimate atmosphere
A. O.
Walking through the LED door and a flight of stairs you will find this nugget. Interesting combinations and great flavour.
J. M.
Can't wait to go back here again.
They Lost my booking, but worked out okay.
Strongly recommend asking the waiter to choose dishes for you (to get the best stuff), as menu is confusing.
Or check out the pictures but if you appreciate spice, heat or chilli in your food you will love this place!
My favourite was whatever this is a picture of (below) if the menu was written and laided out better I might be able to remember, when I go next I’m going to have to show the waiter pictures to get what I like again.
M. W.
Great food and excellent lunch meeting venue
J. M.
Was amazing flavours and spices great atmosphere too and very nice cocktails
A. K.
I've come to Spice Temple a few times now and honestly, i can't get enough! The food is so delicious and the staff are incredibly friendly and helpful! Yes it may not be a cheap eat BUT the serving sizes, service and food is worth it! The staff even allowed us to half portion meals on our first visit so we could try more of the menu - This stood out as outstanding service to us! Also, the cocktails are to die for! We really can't wait to come back!
C. H.
One of our favourite restaurants in Melbourne. Since parenthood, we've only been back once in the last 24 months.
Visited the Sydney branch for dinner during our family holiday with our 2 year old. Staff were accommodating and found us a nice enclave but our daughter decided to sleep instead and managed a full stroller-nap during our 1.5h meal!
The usual Spice Temple ambiance was also conducive for a resting child, which meant an enjoyable meal for mum and dad. Thanks again, ST.
S. N. K.
Nice vibe and good food.
We could not find the entrance for like 10mins
A bit hard to visit if you never been to
Will visit again for sure!
M. P.
All was perfect really that food deserves 5*, the only problem is to find the actual entrance to this place.... What we thought was just a LCD panel with some commercial was actually main entrance....so LCD hanging on the door.
C. J.
Great food nice atmosphere
R. C.
OMG. So much flavour !!!
Beautiful food and excellent service.
H.
Fantastic experience with the vegan / vegetarian banquet! So accomodating and lovely staff.
C.
My son took me to Spice Temple for Mother’s Day yesterday. We had one of the banquets & it was delicious. Amazing cocktails, great wines & great service. 😀 Would highly recommended 🍸🥢🍹🥂
M. s.
Came here for my birthday. Food was absolutely amazing, couldn't fault a single dish. The brisket and the duck were amazing, we went for something different and we weren't disappointed. The fried rice is spicy so if you like spice it's a must.
W. R.
Once you master the incredibly heavy entrance door, you descend into a darkened cavern of delight. From the huge wine list down to the friendly service, this is a temple of sensorial majesty. The banquets are immense value, but be prepared, these are no miniscule foam laden dishes...they are LARGE! My favourite was the cold chicken entree...magnificent.
We had a wonderful experience, and it didn't cost a bomb. Try it, you'll love it!
S. J.
Dark ambience - well themed, tasty Chinese dishes for sure. The food is alot more spicer than other options in Sydney. Is priced on the higher end though.
P. P.
We went there few times. The food is another level, many varieties of Asian westernised dishes that will entice your test bud! They also have a nice bar serves good cocktails before and after dining.
Great place for couples, birthdays and special occasions .
A. H.
Upon entry we found the animated Chinese-themed door to be quite lovely and exciting, unfortunately as we progressed through our descent of the stairwell we began to catch a distinct smell of urine. We arrived 5-10 minutes prior to our reservation and were seated immediately, our waiter was energetic and welcoming. As the ordering process commenced I asked the waiter a couple of questions regarding the menu, he proceeded to answer the question entirely to my female partner whom did not ask and he avoided speaking or making eye contact with me. I ignored this assuming nothing of it, subsequently he would refill her water constantly but not mine on many occasions, this was very odd and uncomfortable on my end, additionally i became quite thirsty at times. My partner also ordered a second beverage from the non-alcoholic section of the menu and it did not come until 30 minutes or so later, after we had completed our dining experience. The food was exceptional and at times required an acquired taste but never the less was delightful. I do recommend the prawn in black vinegar dumplings and the duck in black vinegar with pickled spicy cucumbers (which were not spicy). The atmosphere was a dark vibe and the setting was nice, i could see a lot of dust falling from the spotlight above the table but i did not mind too much. The bathroom paper towels were in fact napkins, not the biggest deal but attention to detail is necessary in the high-end dining industry. Overall the staff were nice and mostly professional with some exceptions, the food was lovely and the mock tails were beautifully presented and tasted superb (when they come that is....)
Would recommend, but is definitely a novelty and would advise that you keep your female partners close.
M. B.
One of our absolute favourite places to eat out. its not possible to be disappointed with any of the menu items. Just so damn tasty and well crafted. Drinks are on point and service is excellent. Massive love to the team at Spice Temple. 🤙🤙
B. P.
Mid to high end dining. Very nice food. Dark & intimate. ..maybe a bit too dark. "Keep your fork" devine desserts 😋
T.
Had a 21:00 sitting and felt a little rushed as the kitchen was closing, however the food was excellent and once ordered, was a very pleasant dining experience
E. S.
Woooooow!! Best Chinese dining experience of my life (better then Mr Wong). Flavours, ambiance, service - all 10/10. We ordered the banquets & the only problem was that there was too much food for two 😂. Can’t wait to dine here again!
R. H.
Great dining experience, it has flavours from all over China - yes, I think it's a Chinese cuisine -, great service, staff, atmosphere. Although it's a bit dark with spot lights on the food, it does add a romantic touch to it.. And puts the food in the spot light too - literally -. You have to give it a try.. Enjoy :)
L. B.
Amazing! Great customer experience. Beautiful place and amazing food.
R. S.
I'm still sweating from the chilli..
Nice place though
D. G.
Good food and nice setting, staff is friendly and food comes at a steady pace. Service was a little slow.
S.
Since it's one star in good food guide so hold high expectations. Overall deco remind me of Hakkasan in London but even date lighting that you will not be able to read it's menu anywhere else but under it's spot light. Service is reasonable not much passion in there as you can feel their standardized questions which asked twice … but dont get me wrong it's good service you would expect at this standard just you can't feel the passion due to busy kitchen. Food is reasonable nice but some authentic Chinese some fusion which I nice mixed, slightly in salty side that goes well with rice. Good Aussie standard but abit off from Michelin 1 star standard. Good for matching wine. Would probably return with its seasonal menu once a year.
J. T.
Fantastic food, drink and service. Couldn’t fault the experience if I tried. Will definitely be back.
S. D.
We love this resturant, great food and exceptional service
K. M.
The atmosphere is intimate and incredibly stylish. The menu is extensive and everything looks delicious. we ended up choosing the banquet. The food is delicious, well balanced and plentiful. The service is attentive and the staff are friendly. Would definitely go back for a special occasion.
D. B.
Great food, fantastic wine, excellent service and fabulous ambience! One of my favourites
Has it changed? Portions too large and it has got more expensive!
B. G.
Stopped by Spice Temple on Saturday night to have a drink while waiting for some friends, I was served by this really sweet bartender Sen! She was so energetic, fun and just a delight.
When I told her that I had never eaten at Spice Temple, she recommended some nibbles which were amazing! I’ll definitely be attending in the near future for the full Spice Temple Experience! Thank you Sen.
A. Q.
The food, decor and service was fabulous. And the dishes were much bigger than we were expecting. Thank you so much 🙂🙂🙂
M. F.
A wonderful intimate dining experience. The atmosphere is dark and somehow has an air of excitement. The zodiac themed cocktails are delicious and a good way to start the meal.
The chicken wings are so good that I’ve gone with friends just for that and a bottle of wine.
The drunk fish is an experience all to itself as the dish comes to the table covered in chillies and peppers that are spooned away to expose the delicate fish. This is a must try dish.
The banquet is unbelievably good and more food than you would expect. Although it isn’t cheap you don’t feel ripped off.
The experience of the place along with the very high quality of food makes this a must visit in Sydney.
J. B.
Absolutely our favourite place to eat in Sydney! I don’t think it’s possible to order a bad dish here, everything we have ever eaten has been so mouthwateringly delicious. Add friendly, fast and efficient service and you’ve got the whole package. We spent my husband’s 50th here and our 20th anniversary and they made us feel so special with a few complementary items.
Well deserved 5 stars x
M. G.
Awesome place. Really good chicken wings! The food is great, vast drinks menu and great service.
M. P.
Great atmosphere, nice and peaceful place to enjoy dinner, staff and customer service was excellent & food was awesome.
Will be back soon!!
P. C.
M. A.
Great tasting food and ambience (dark, romantic, but quite lively not too formal) - which is great for date nights and people who like Asian cuisine. It's a a little on the pricey end but well worth it for a special occasion.
What I love about this place is that it has a nice waiting area with a bar, and you can already order some dishes while you wait for your table. It's got a cool secret entry door on Bligh St which is a nice touch.
Highly recommend checking this place out!
Y. O.
Impeccable food, impeccable service! Modern Chinese cuisine and amazing cocktails. We had the Dynasty Banquet for our wedding anniversary tonight and we had a lovely evening. For me, the standout dishes were the crab stir fry - amazing job done by the chef who peeled them, the claws were still intact and made this dish very beautiful; and the wagyu with eggplants, well seasoned with homely flavours. Only two things that could be improved in my humble opinion. For both me and my husband the banquet was way too much! We are good eaters but we really had to fight our way through the four courses! The waitress actually told us that people usually don’t finish the banquet dishes so a lot of food gets wasted. I think these days wasting food is neither economical nor ethical, so why not give costumers the choice between either sea food course or meat course or between beef or duck. It would be more than enough anyway! We also found the food very oily in general which made it even heavier. And the dessert was underwhelming. But other wise we really enjoyed our stay! Casual fine dining at its best!

Great food and ambience (dark, romantic, but quite lively) - which is great for date nights and people who like Asian cuisine.

Enjoyed dinner at Spice Temple. Favourite dish was the Kung pao chicken, loved the spicyness and the flavor was incredible. Some other highlights were the white cut chicken with strange flavor dressing and the house style fried rice and the prawn toast, in that order. I did not like the Nanjing pork hock, it was quite dry and the batter was too thick.
A. L.
Fantastic and interesting modern Chinese experience. Not one dish was like something I had before but all were excellent. The highlights were tuna sashimi, Pippas (clams) and beef with eggplant and dumplings, though everything was great. Each dish had layered flavors, some spicier than others, and tasted very different from each other. Also, great service and a modern ambiance. A great meal.
A. J.
Favourite date spot for my husband and I the food is amazing! And the atmosphere is really nice too! Only small complaint would be that sometimes we feel a bit rushed, but I understand it's a busy Resturant with two seating times. Either way we will be back forsure.
R. M. (.
Some very excellent dishes. Waygu Beef Brisket dish is amazing. Wine list extensive but quite pricey.
C. C.
The food was delicious, I loved how it wasn't your typical Chinese dishes. I thought the zodiac-themed cocktails were a great idea, we tried the pig cocktail and it was lovely. The service was great and the staff were helpful and looked after us well. I would go back again.
C. L.
Hadn’t been to Spice Temple for quite a while, so I went with some family and friends for dinner. Waitress was lovely and helpful. Maitre D’ on the other hand was quite unpleasant and didn’t seem interested in being at work. The food itself left us all wanting more. It did taste good, but not amazing and it was in no way worth the amount we paid for it. More like “all show and no go”. If you’re hungry and/or have a few people to feed, you’re definitely better off somewhere else. 3 of the mains were sparse in their main ingredient (more chillies than chicken/fish), and when paying the amount we did you expect to leave full and satisfied.
S. M.
We had our wedding dinner there recently and the staff were so amazing & food is just incredible! We love this place & had the best night. The sommilier was brilliant too! We can't wait to come back again!
J. C.
Spicy tasty Chinese food in a hip location. Don't blink or you may miss the entrance. Watch out for the chillies in their Kung Pao Chicken
C. A.
We had such a great experience here. We ordered the Dynasty banquet with matching wines and it was delicious, filling and great value. We were extremely full by dish 6 (out of 10) but everything was so delicious and fresh. The atmosphere is great. Highly recommended. We will definitely be back.
R. D.
To say that this was one of the best dining experiences in my life would be an understatement. Sure, there is a long staircase which puts you deep underground away from the city, it's a small price to pay for the enjoyment.
The service was impeccable, with friendly and helpful staff who knew the menu well. They consistently kept the water full at the table which is important for some considering the menu.
The food was beyond any expectation that I may have had. While many fine dining establishments may charge a high price and leave you wanting, the food is all generously proportioned. So much so that we had to cancel a dish because we were full. The rest we took home with us and enjoyed the next day.
If I could only have one final meal before departing this existence, I would opt for The Spice Temple without hesitation.
L. R.
I've had dinner here on several occasions. The food is consistent and always tastes great. The service is accommodating and friendly. Atmosphere is very contemporary, may be a little dark for some customers but the vibe the restaurant gives off is one of a kind. Highly recommended. Price may be a bit steep for people just looking for a decent meal. However, you get what you pay for. The food is of great quality. Portions are perfect, no complaints there.
J. R.
Great food. Great drinks. One thing that stood out as a slight disappointment was the men's toilets. I don't want to judge but the toilet paper was pretty thin. The walls need a paint touch up. When I pay higher tier prices I like a well rounded experience.
M. T.
The food is earthy and spicy not your traditional Cantonese fare. If you order a hot dish expect to taste the chilli. The dark cavernous interior with spotlit table sets the scene for the dining experience you are about to enjoy. The staff know their craft and the service was impeccable, we had a great night and think you will too!
L. R.
The dishes are extremely over priced
$45-$50, for every main and $30 for 8 dumplings! We waited 45 mins for our dumplings to come out. Thankfully the mains were quicker. But the food was very average and definitely not worth the high prices. Our main was some stir fried beef with onion and it was $50! Not even other veggies in there! Great atmosphere and decor, but that's about it I'm afraid.
J. H.
An amazing customer experience. The staffs attention to detail (even when things go wrong) was incredible. The chef desire for the diners to have an experience to remember was clear to see.
Not cheap but totally worth it as whole night was an experience
K. M.
The food was delicious and the cocktails were something special (especially the silk road) but the service left a sour taste in my mouth. When we made our order we were told by the wait staff that we had not ordered enough food for three ladies (pickles, dumplings, an entree, a main, a vegetable dish and rice) not wanting to ignore the advice we added a further dish and found ourselves with entirely too much food. Being pushed into ordering more food than we needed, when we had judged quite well to begin with, felt like a lesser quantity of service than I'd expect from such a well regarded establishment.
E. M.
First off - the location is very convenient and I love the door - never fails to amuse me with the visual screen door. Anyway, the service was excellent and friendly, even tho my dining partners and I did throw in some tougher questions about the food and wine pairings. The food was tasty but what really got the group talking was the AMAZING dessert. We had a selection from the menu but the best one was this three milk cake thing that was unbelievably delicious and worth all the calories! :) you won't regret it. A bit on the pricey side, save this one for special occasions.
N. O.
My partner and I had the Golden Banquet. The food was delicious. The cocktails were lovely and fairly strong. The staff were attentive and very friendly and were very apologetic when there was a slight wait for our mains. All over a great experience, would recommend
K. D.
Now if you’re looking for an affordable hotpot venue, this is not the place. However, given the pricing, the selection they have is great. I think the most notable dishes is the Barbie Doll wrapped in thin slices of meat and the long board of lamb. Asides from a variety of choices when it comes to sauces, they also have a mixed array of cold appetisers that you can choose from.
Although it should be noted that it may be a little difficult to communicate with staff when ordering, as most of the waitstaff seem to be Chinese and struggle to understand broader English.
A. B.
Food was good, but perhaps not as spicy as the name suggests. I can certainly recommend the leather jacket fish soup main, though desserts were the highlight, with the tea/cream cake being particularly good. Not a great option for big groups due to the noise and darkness, but would be a good option for a smaller gathering.
A. M.
Our party of five had the most wonderful lunch today . Great wine list, lovely helpful staff and the most delicious food beautifully presented. Would highly recommend dinning here . There is no view but a fantastic ambience has been created . For me it was stepping back in time to night club like you see in old movies. Looking forward to dinning here again soon.
T. K.
Once your eyes adjust to the incredibly low lighting the feel of the place is quite intimate and almost sedate.
The food was amazing!
The staff I dealt with were quite knowledgeable about the food and the drink pairings etc but were very reserved - almost as if it was part of the job description that they not interact with the patrons any more than necessary.
Overall though it was a nice experience
R. N.
The service here is top notch. We had a bit mixup with our Dimmi booking -The staff at spice temple were very good about. The cocktails were amazing. The food was good prawn won tons and fried eggplant were great but we found the lamb to be a bit sugary. We’d go there more but it’s got the $$$$ in google for a reason.

Went over the weekend as a birthday celebration. Had a reservation at 8.30pm but had to wait for about 30min at the bar for our table. The staff were very busy as it was Saturday night, which they apologised with a lovely entree dish. It took us very long to get ahold of our waiter every time we wanted to order or get something. The food was exceptional and they downsized what they recommended and apportioned the bill for it. I didn't end up getting a birthday cupcake which they said they would bring it. They also didn't pack our rice with our food which we paid $5pp for. Despite the disappointing service and the long waits, the entire experience was great. Would come again but if we get the same long service as we did before, I wouldn't come back.
D. S.
The food was some of the best I have ever had. It was flavourful and there was plenty of variety, as we opted for the banquet. Unlike most banquets we were fully satisfied and had to get some of the food take away.
The only downside was the water bill. We opted for sparkling water not realising it was $10 per person. This was never disclosed to us and we were quite shocked when we saw a bill of $20 for water!!!!.
M. C.
We came with a large group to celebrate a friend's birthday. Really enjoyed the set Dynasty menu. The food was delicious, the atmosphere and soft lighting was enjoyable, and the staff was friendly. The only negative was the bar. Since we arrived a bit early we chose to wait at the bar for our friends. We ordered a glass of wine, a cider, a Negroni and a Mojito. After having waited for 20 minutes (!) for the Negroni, we'd had enough and decided to cancel the order. That's exactly when the bartender brought the drink over. I counted 4 staff in the bar and it certainly wasn't very busy. But other than the snail paced bar, no complaints.
A. C.
Always brilliant! The food is delicious (we had the tofu, chicken wings, numbing pork and greens.), The cocktails are unique and really enjoyed the desserts - matched with friendly service...makes for a great spot!

Just got back from a beautiful lunch at Spice Temple. The food was fantastic and the service was great. A bit of a wait between a couple of the dishes but it was a nice lunch treat - would also make a great romantic date night!
The only minor gripe is that the food earmarked as the spiciest wasn't quite spicy at all :)
C. M.
My favorite Chinese in all of Australia. Amazing atmosphere. Impeccable menu of the highest quality. Service is absolutely perfect. Couldn't be better. Get the "strange flavor chicken" and the chicken wings with heaven facing chilis and the dry aged wagyu with Szechuan peppers. Trust me.
S. C.
Absolutely wonderful restaurant. The food and ambiance were outstanding
S. M.
Food and service is impeccable, although food is a bit pricey but you kind of expect that for Rockpool. I definitely recommend the Fried Eggplant and the Chow Mein Noodles! The Dumplings were average and overpriced but overall a nice atmosphere and they accommodated well for a 10 people booking for my Birthday.
L. F.
Amazing food, even better service!! Went here randomly with my partner and we both really loved it. The service was excellent. The food it spicy as the name implies so be sure to mention to the waiter if you don't like spicy! :)
J.
Brought a friend who was visiting Sydney for a conference
The entrance is behind a large screen which was very interesting.
The staff were very nice and helpful. Cozy atmosphere, I guess due to the lighting, you forget there are other tables around.
The drinks and food menu is extensive. Alot to choose from.
I was actually surprised that the food was so tasty. Ended up eating more rice then I usually do. They use fresh ingredients.
Could be quite pricey, do recommend going as a group so you can try more different types of dishes.
The cocktails have interesting names and are pretty good
Will visit again if there is a special occasion.
A. A.
Love this place. Food is so pricy same with the cocktails, but the food is such good quality. In love with the atmosphere and decor. We were there in the private room till really late and they didn't kick us out or give us attitude which is so rare and much appreciated !
G. H.
Awesome staff, awesome food and cocktails. The ambience was fantastic. I loved it and will definitely be returning. The heaven facing chili or stir fried chili dishes are to die for if you're a chili fan.
E. K.
Superb dining experience and wonderful service. Only minor critique is some of the dishes were a little heavy on the salt, but otherwise tasty and delicious.
C.
Service was impeccable and the ambience was good. The food was fine, but as an Australian/Asian chef I have to wonder at some of the pairings of the ingredients being placed together because they can, not because they should. Also seemed odd having a Latin American dessert (tres leches cake) with Middle Eastern flavours (rosewater/pistachios) on the dessert menu. Hardly an Asian fusion - there are plenty of great Asian dessert fusions that could be on the menu instead. Best dish of the evening was definitely the lamb/fennel dumplings.
Z.
Really special. Decor and vibe set the tone. Dark and a bit mysterious. Take advice from the waitstaff. The food is unlike what most westerners know as Chinese takeaways - this is the real deal. Beautiful colours and flavours.

Staff were amazing. Very attentive.
Loved the decor.
Ate here two or so weeks ago and had the Dynasty Banquet with paired wines.
The numbing duck was dry.
As another reviewer pointed out, I did notice that the flavours were very... westernised? I’m certain that the XO sauce we had on the pippies is no different to a bottled sweet chilli.
If I had paid, I would have given fewer stars.
Could use more flavour complexity for the price.
L. S.
Who likes spicy food it will be a haven for him. We had a beautiful night with outstanding and friendly service. Waitress recommended food and wine for us and everything was perfectly matching. If I can highlight something it would be "Strange flavour white cut chicken" "Fried eggplant with spicy ginger and garlic dressing" and "Nanjing style braised pork hock with black vinegar tea"
R. W.
The door is an LED screen if you are trying to find your way in. The service is horrible, not one recommendation from the staff on the menu and the waitress forgetting my drink twice. We ordered the lamb dumplings which were good. Unfortunately our main, the Kung Pao chicken was covered, and I do mean covered, in chiles. One seed in your mouth and you'll understand the name of the restaurant. The waitress suggested to me a shot of vodka, but I was already drinking Orion lager. There were maybe 9 pieces of chicken in this $49 main (split between the two of us!). Ridiculous. Don't let the menu mislead you. The mains are not meant to feed the table. They just expect you to order more of them. After 19 days of visiting this hemisphere for the first time, we're still looking for authentic Asian cuisine. You won't find it here. But the vibe is nice. I would recommend this restaurant to people with deep pockets who want to impress their friends with cocktails, hip vibe, but unfortunately average food. Mr. Perry, you have work to do.
D. L.
Yum! Ok after three visits I’m still a fan. Even though some of my favourites are no longer on the menu (bye bye pork belly), nothing we ordered disappointed us. Everything was punching, with so much flavour!
Only downfall is the size of servings... some of the dishes are twice the price of the Chinatown Szechuan restaurants and half the size and flavour... that said they were still pretty tasty
We ordered the yellowfin tuna, pickled cucumber, fried eggplant (omg), dumplings, pork buns, fried squid, sweet & sour pork, beef brisket, Kung pao chicken, and fish in Chilli oil.... enough for seven people lol
S. S.
I had dinner at Spice Temple on Saturday night with a group of seven work colleagues. We decided to have the $75 per head banquet as this makes ordering easier with a large group. I have eaten at this restaurant before and the food was again delicious, however I was extremely disappointed when we needed to ask on more than one occasion for separate serving utensils for each dish that was brought to the table. It is just not hygienic to expect seven people to keep "double-dipping" their cutlery/chopsticks. The waitress was actually rude to my husband when he asked her for a second time if we could have fresh serving spoons. Not good enough!
G. B.
Different, interesting and tasty. Great service and fantastic selection to choose from- some dishes might challenge you but are well worth it. Fab drinks selection - we went with Chinese zodiac animals
L. W.
Whenever we are in Sydney we try to enjoy Spice Temple or Rockpool Bar and grill upstairs. The food is always excellent and the decor and atmosphere is great, dark and moody.
I've only given 3 stars as we arrived at 9pm and didn't receive any food until 10:15. It was only my fiance and I, so it's not like we had a big table order to fill.
Previous visits the food had always been at the table within 15-30 mins max. So the wait was a little disappointing this time.
H. G.
Food was good but dessert was amazing!!..

Service from start to finish, even noting uniforms of staff and service details is absolutely top notch. They thought of everything to be modern while staying true to real delicious Chinese cuisine. Lovely front desk staff, helpful waiter, perfect experience. My new favorite Chinese.
Y. Y.
Hunan style pork belly and Kung Pao Chicken are good. Don’t recommend the king mushroom as it got no texture or flavor, and it tasted a bit dry in your mouth, seems like it’s been defrost several times...Good service though.
S. B.
Dined at Spice Temple last night (Wed night) for the first time.
I enjoyed the atmosphere, nice and dark and elegant.
What I didn't enjoy was being rushed through our meal. The mains arrived before we had finished our entree, entree remains were then pushed onto the main plate so they could make room for the other dishes.
We were told we had to be out by 8.15pm.
The food was nice, but nothing to write home about.
For $175 (2 people), I expect more than to be rushed through a meal and shown the door by a specific time.
Probably won't return.

I wish there was a rating between 3 and 4. 3 seems a bit mean and 4 too good. The food is nice, the staff pretty helpful, the decor attractive, if over-dark and the music too loud. (Why do so many restaurants do this?) There were two major problems; firstly, not being familiar with the restaurant, we asked the helpful waitress whether our order of an appetiser (pre-starter) between two, two main courses and one fried rice between two, was conventionally sufficient. She advised not and we ordered a starter between two as well. Absent coming off a starvation diet, there was absolutely no possibility of two grown men eating this quantity of food. Without being too sanctimonious, it is offensive to have to leave the greater part of both one main course and the fried rice and know it will be thrown away. Secondly, we were half way through an enthusiastic demolition of the shared starter, when the fried rice and main courses arrived on our small table for two. Totally impractical and the two otherwise tasty main courses got cold as we struggled to eat and maintain the food on the table. Either that or we left the starter and had it removed. Of course, we should have asked that the main courses went back until we were ready but, in the enthusiasm of the moment, we did not. It was interesting to see that the neighbouring table had the same issue, so not an isolated experience. Shame, because otherwise a nice place but not cheap.
A. H.
A little hard to find... Literally a door in the wall to an underground basement. Fit out was nice but it was quite dark. Ok if it's a romantic night out but was a work lunch it could have been a little more light. Food was ok but nothing amazing. The flathead and crispy skin chicken were the best. As I wasn't paying there were no complaints from me. Nothing bad to right about it just not amazing.
R. G.
We've celebrated our anniversary in this famous hatted pan-Asian restaurant from Rockpool group. The place / ambience is good though a bit dark to my liking. The service from the staff is excellent but expected from Rockpool group and the price level. The pan-Asian menu is diverse and interesting, however not all dishes are as good as expected. We love the entree of Asian-style steak tartare and the stir-fried noodles. However, the rest of dishes including their dumplings are average and over-priced compared to the ones we can have at famous dumpling places like Tim Ho Wan and Mr. Wong.
T. P.
Delicious food from mild to hot. A welcome change from your everyday Chinese with dishes you wont see often. Decent wine list and friendly staff. Not a cheap night out but worth it.
V. C.
Spice temple was amazing! Great flavourful food which was spicy but not too hot. The prices are very reasonable and good value, the ambience of the place is also very nice: its dark but not the dark that makes you fall asleep.
Definitely looking to go there again as they have such a great variety of food!
J. L.
Set menu $79 pp. Confused flavours but plenty of food. Squid dish poor, squid not cleaned properly and frozen not fresh. Cheapest wine $70/bottle and good choices over $100. Now it’s owned by private equity the balance sheet and P/L are being readied for a public sale of the entire group ; Bavarian Beer etc. the Neil Perry restaurants are not what they were. And no Chinese people eating there.
S. K.
Despite not being hip enough nor having a reservation, we got a seat immediately, had friendly staff and each dish was excellent! 9.5 for a bottle of water was a bit stiff, but I guess to be expected for the kind of place. Go. Eat. Enjoy.
L. D.
I recently went to Spice Temple for a special occasion and had an exceptional experience from beginning to end.
The service was impeccable and the lady that looked after us was very knowledgeable about the menu and the wine list.
I would definitely recommend dining here. Worth every dollar!
A. L.
Fantastic food at the Spice Temple, the hot and numbing beef as a cold main is awesome, as well as the three shot chicken
The spiced prawns with the chilli rub are very hot as well. Service was excellent compared to my last visit and it wasn't too busy on the lunchtime before easter.
Will be back.
D. H.
Nice food overall, some things bland like the chicken wings but the numing beef brisket was amazing. The fried rice was ok, the pork had too much coriander even though i love coriander. I have heard so much about this place and has been on my food bucket list but didnt love it as i thought i would. Maybe it was a bad night? Will try again just in case..
A. L.
I would say its an excellent place for an intimate dining experience, but also for groups. The food is good, but for the price, I would expect better. The entrance to the restaurant is a bit tricky to find, I think it's on props, definitely make sure you have a reservation as it gets busy.
W. H.
My boyfriend and I dined at the Spice Temple on a Monday night. With our reservation we were seated right away. The food was delicious and the service was great. We ordered the fried eggplant with spicy ginger and garlic dressing (vegan), fried salt and pepper silken tofu with spicy coriander salad (vegan), and the Kung Pao Chicken. All dishes were spot-on. The stand-out for us was the fried eggplant dish - it was perfection.
J. v. B.
Enjoyed our dinner at Spice Temple but unfortunately it did not meet the high expectations for an establishment of this calibre. Food was delicious but our banquet mains took about 45 minutes, desserts and amazing cocktails were the stand out items from the menu which is unfortunate given the price point.
T. T.
A rare Asian cuisine fine dining experience. The decor is perfect for couples looking for an intimate and romantic setting, especially for Valentine's day.
Although each dish is full of vibrant flavours, they are a little too salty and strong compared to authentic Asian dishes.
If you are looking for an Asian cuisine fine dining experience, look no further than Spice Temple.
J. P.
Most amazing food and service. Zoe is fantastic as front house. She has an great memory and never forgets. The ribs are top notch. In fact everything is fantastic and that's why we keep going back!
S. H.
A cool 60's underground vibe, bustling at 1pm on a Friday. The squid was fresh and not rubbery and delicious sitting on a fabulous crunchy spicy. The kung pao chicken was a yummy dry style stir fry with tons of flavor sitting in a bunch! of chilis and crunchy cashews. Didn't get rice. Surprisingly both dishes paired well with the shiraz blend! Would definitely go back.
O. T.
I rate this one of the best fine dining restaurants in Sydney and Melbourne. I've visited both on many occasions and they offer a fantastic menu with plenty of unique dishes. The Hot Numbing Wagyu Beef is amazing and definitely a signature dish.
Service is always fantastic and they have a great dining atmosphere.
Some dishes are a little 'hit and miss' like the Kung Pow Chicken. When served nice and crispy it's amazing however; on occasion, the Chicken is served a little soggy. Same goes for the Spicy Chicken Wings.
It's not cheap and the servings are very small so expect to pay at the upper end of dining out.
S. K.
Had the Dynasty Banquet with matching wines. Excellent service and great food. Favourite dish by far was the hot and numbing crispy duck! So delicious!
P. N.
Spice Temple has been one of my favourite restaurants in sydney for a long time. The quality has dipped a bit of late, but the White Cut Strange Flavour chicken is still wonderful, and the atmosphere is chilled and dark. Classy night
G. S.
Good environment, good food but not particularly good service.
I loved the food even for that price. However what turned me off was the Kung Pao Chicken we ordered. It was dished out on a big plate with about 5 pieces of chicken hidden in a pile of dried red chillies. When I suggested that they should put a little less chilli on the place, the waiter said "let me tell you about Asian cuisine". I'm not an idiot. I just felt like we were passed off a dish with chillies which was meant to be something else.
The staff honestly don't give a rat's ass about the customers. Despite my husband letting them know that it was our anniversary and the lady at the reception promising free desert, they didn't do anything. They didn't even wish us (let alone free desert). We had our desert and paid for it so it isn't like we were dying for it.
You can clearly see the arrogance in that place.
O. T.
I was very curious if food at Spice Temple is true it's roots and naturally my parents who are quite traditional were a bit sceptical. But doubts quickly vanished as soon as we tasted the food. It was delicious and very definition of Chinese fine dining. Everything was elegantly presented, deboned and most importantly, cooked well. There's no over compensating with MSG or greasy fingers here.
We ordered the banquet and in hindsight it was a good introduction to the variety of food here. For couples, I think the banquet is great because you can have more variety but for bigger groups I would suggest going for the ala carte. The "Yellowfin tuna with spicy orange oil and lettuce" (though yes not entirely chinese) was out of this world. Other standouts were the "Pippies with XO sauce" and the "Red braised beef short rib".
Service was good, as you would expect from restaurant of this level. The mood was seductive, though for a family dining event, it was a bit too dark and we find it quite hard to read the menu at times.

Food: 5/5
Service: 5/5
Atmosphere: 4/5
Value: 4/5
Visit again: Yes
Good for: Special occasions, Fancy dates.
A. c.
Food was good, but nothing exceptional to justify the price. The atmosphere is great though: a small moving curtain on a screen-door with no name, you go down some stairs and reach such a nice bar! The restaurant is really dark but impressive!
M. C.
Menus, food and beverages were all very good. Whilst the service was there, professional wait staff are essential to complete a fine dining experience. This seemed to be lacking and replaced with food runners. The bar tenders were either very busy or just not up to speed.
E. L.
The dishes, which had generally authentic flavours, were a little hit and miss: the duck pancakes were a nice start although not the best, and the kung pao chicken ticked all the boxes for flavour and texture, but the baby peas with bacon and the spicy fish were unremarkable. The decor was tastefully dim, but the service was so slow that I had forgotten what we had ordered by the time our dishes arrived.
P. M.
While I have wanted to visit Spice Temple since it opened every time it came to booking I always became hesitant. There is so much great Chinese food in Sydney at such low prices I was worried about being disappointed. Well I am pleased to say that it was completely unfounded. From the time we arrived till our last bite we were constantly impressed by the service, food and serving sizes.
We entered the dark restaurant which everyone had warned us was soooo dark, some had suggested too dark and while they were right I did not think it was too bad. Even thought it was early in the week the place was full and I think the darkness helps you to forget about how busy it is around you and really focus on your dining partners. The lighting about the food was bright enough and I soon forgot there were tables nearby.
We arrived missing half our party, who were running late but staff were kind enough to extend our sitting time as we had told them it was a special occasion dinner to celebrate our daughter engagement.
We started with the Chinese horoscope cocktails which were interesting and delicious. Mine, the tiger, has passionfruit, aperol, limoncello. It was so good I am going to have to try to recreate it at home.
When taking our food order the waiter suggested the number of courses we might want to order and offered suggestions based on our likes. We ignored her advice which seemed too restrained for our liking and ordered a few extra courses because there was so much we wanted to try. In the end we went for 5 entrees, 3 sides and 2 mains. It was the perfect amount for 4 people. Stand out dishes were the eggplant 3 ways, the cabbage and radish served with a truly delicious XO sauce and the Nanjing style braised pork hock with black vinegar tea. The only dish we did not really enjoy were the lamb and fennel dumplings which were just a bit dry.
After dinner, in honour of our daughters engagement, we were served a complimentary dessert cocktail called a Rickshaw, It was made from hibiscus gin, citrus and vanilla and reminded me of those sour warhead lollies from the 90s - pretty unusual and the first mouthful felt a bit like medicine but it grew on me.
Overall everything was outstanding, the customer service was fantastic and the experience one I hope to repeat often.
A. R.
Not amazing amazing. We did the Chinese New year banquet and it was good value for money in terms of portion size and courses. Service is a little disappointing as you expect it to be more attentive at this price point and it wasn't.
J. S.
By far the best customer service I have ever received. I was blown away by their professionalism and the deliciousness of the food.
Our waiter Michael was extremely attentive and proactive in making sure we had an amazing meal.
Very satisfied
G.
The food is simply amazing, this is not a cheap place but the quality is well worth the price. The food is spicy and tasty and is my favourite restaurant in Sydney. Highly recommended if you like spicy food...
J. S.
Tonight the universe drew us to Spice Temple. We tried to get into Mr Wongs but the wait at 6pm was 2.5hours. Spice temple managed to fit us in at the bar with very prompt amazing service by our waitress Leah. She was spectacular with her reccomendations (as the portion sizes were huge!!) Continued to check on us and offered the best service to date we have experienced in Sydney.
The food was mouthwatering (the mandarin brulee and passionfruit marshmallows get a special mention) and the food service in the bar was extremely fast with our first dish to us in under 15minutes. Spice temple deserves the two hats it recieved in 2017 and has been cheated out of the 2nd hat in 2018.
We will be back with bells on!!!!!!

Perfect service, a lot of food

Neil Perry, major fans welcomed. The restaraunt and the underground set up is fantastic.
If you are not a fan of spicy dishes, even the mild ones are amazing.
Superb palettes and textures, everything is mixed well and the Rockpool Group, house wine was well sought. You will forget your watch when you dine here and you will not want to leave.
Food, company, wine and privacy. Perfect well kept secret.
D.
Great food. Knowledgeable service. Nothing on the menu didn't sound delicious. Ordering is genuinely a challenge!
E. B.
Cute and romantic ambience. Very friendly staff. And awesome cocktails. The menu is extensive and there are so many interesting dishes. The fish with the heavenly facing chilis was a stand out.
M. W.
Great food full of amazing spice. It is rather spicy so make sure you are able to handle a dissent amount of chilly if you are planning to go there.
V. O.
Really didn't want to be underwhelmed by spice temple but I was. The shredded duck and silken tofu was great but no dish really blew us away - 2 hats is a stretch. The spanner crab and mung bean noodles was really disappointing, sounded great on the menu but was bland and tasteless.
Something that soured the night was the birthday cake and candles I provided to them to surprise my girlfriend. Someone made the decision to leave the number 30 candle that I searched far and wide to get off the cake?? Why? Instead they put 3 normal candles on the cake. It really ruined the surprise and the moment, can't believe they wouldn't have maybe asked me first before doing that. Couldn't believe it, she'll only turn 30 once :(
On a high note the wontons and fried rice were delicious, cocktails were incredibly smooth and well balanced, and the service was impressively efficient and the lighting and decor provides a really nice dining atmosphere.

I had my reservations before visiting this place namely around it being two hatted and all, which means tiny plates of pretentious food! Boy was I surprised and pleasently so. It has a super cool entrance and you have have to push the door next to the fire exit to get in. I had gone there for one their special nights called "Some like it hot' which was a celebration of chillies. And I absolutely loved every dish on my plate. The winner were the spicy crispy chicken wings with pickled vegetables. It was so delicious with a spice mix sprinkled on them, then came the mixed fried peppers beautiful and not very hot, followed by rabbit with an egg custard, this was followed by the mains (I know the food just kept coming!) spiced pork belly with quail eggs and sichuan spice beef (mouth numbing spicy and ridiculously tasty), follwed by a light dessert of granita and candied nuts. Everything was perfect and accompanied with steamed rice to tone down the heat. The portions were very generous and the staff was polite enough to suggest that they would pack anything from the table we wanted as takeaway, as all of us were so full after the third course that the main stayed virtually untouched. The cocktails are really interesting and they have a list themed after your chinese zodiac sign! This is the kind of place where I feel that the price meets the service and food on offer. All in all our whole group loved it and I had the sichuan chilly beef leftovers the next day :)
A. G.
A delicious place to have dinner in a small group. Avoid the set menu as you miss out on some of the better meals. The kung pao chicken is unbelievable.
The staff are great and the service is fast, but gives you enough time to relax and enjoy the meal.
A. G.
Easily one of the best places in Sydney to go out for a meal. I've been to spice temple several times for birthday celebrations, to date-night to work events. The food never ever disappoints and the ambience is great. Highly recommend the kung pao chicken if you like spicey food:)
a. p.
One of Sydney's favourites. Wonderful southern-Chinese-inspired food (Hunan and Sechuan mainly). The absolute must are the kung pao and the typhoon style squid. The restaurant is stilish and the service is amazing. Pricy but totally worth it.
R. S.
The most amazing food and cocktails.
B. B.
Swanky Chinese restaurant tucked in the middle of the city. The food was good but the only thing extraordinary about Spice Temple is the price! My friends and I all agree we would prefer Superbowl in Chinatown.
L. V. m.
Amazing place. The food was sensational. As a big fan of spicy food, this place provided the goods! Lots of dishes to choose from. Intimate setting. Great service too
J. R.
The food here is a wonderful experience of asian delicacies touring the taste buds through the deep dark secrets that the east has to offer. The decore is to die for and the service is impeccable. The staff were quick to suggest dishes and drinks based on my preferences.
T. K.
One of my favourite restaurants in Sydney. The service is always attentive, the food is always delicious. It's called Spice Temple for a reason, not for faint hearted when it comes to spiciness
S. F.
Consistently great food and atmosphere. You MUST try some of the non-alcoholic cocktails, we recommend the one with rose petals and lychee syrup. The three shot chicken never fails. One point though, if you dont like spicy food with heaps of flavour, give this one a miss!
J. L.
I've been here a few times and am never disappointed. The food is delicious and prepared to perfection every time. The service is also excellent. It is quite pricey so I've only been here for special occasions. Overall I'll definitely be back.
L. L.
3 stars is probably a little harsh given it's a two hatted restaurant. The dark, elegant, romantic decor makes you feel like you are one of a few diners. The portion sizes are ample for a what is an upmarket restaurant but the menu doesn't quite match my pallette. The heavenly facincing chilli fish was the pick for presentation & taste.
J. T.
Very nice food. Dim lighting and cosy for good conversation. Grab a cocktail at the bar if you arrive early. There was four of us and three starters, five mains plus drinks was $400.
d.
A subterranean culinary food-lab paradise. Every once in a while I catch myself thinking about the mouth numbing beef and I know it is time to make pilgrimage to the temple. I think it is great that I can sit in the bar area without reservation and still enjoy items from the regular and bar menus. On a side note, the digital artwork used as a front door is one of my favourite installations in the city.
S. B.
Have been here a few times now, and I never seem to be able to go past one of the set menu's. The variety of food that you get to try is fantastic, as is the atmosphere and the service. Definitely the restaurant of choice out of Neil Perry's restaurants.
A. P.
Ambience, decor and service excellent. Most dishes were good which included the recommended/popular dishes but some were average. Overall it was a nice dinner.
N. E.
The spanner crab is amazing. The other "must try" is the white cut chicken with strange sauce. A "snake" cocktail or the German Reisling are a perfect accompaniment. Service is remarkable. Enjoy.
U. K.
Ambiance is nice and and romantic. One of their signature dishes "The numbing crispy duck" was a disaster with it being neither numbing nor crispy. If you want to try it I recommend the Spice Temple, Melbourne.
D. L.
Top notch service accompanied with grade A food and atmosphere. The 3 flavours dish is a definite must along with the chicken and beef dishes. A MUST try for all food lovers who are looking at trying something new and exciting.
J. M.
Great food and wine menu although expensive. Very trendy and happening, sitting in basement, quite dark and intimate. Duck pancakes were amazing also Kung pow chicken.
K. S.
Great food, wonderful atmosphere. Fantastic wine selection. Get what you pay for, is on the pricey side. But that's downtown Sydney.
J. B.
Now an established Sydney landmark, Spice Temple's commitment to distinguished Chinese cuisine, served as sharing plates with an excellent wine and cocktail selection make it a must for those looking beyond the ordinary.
W. L. H.
Hands down the best restaurant I have ever been too. Came here for lunch with my mother on a weekend, it wasn't very packed and we did not have to wait. Yummy Food!
S. P.
Spice temple is a modern asian fusion restuarant, posing excellent decor, dimmed lightening perfect for dates. Must try dish is the fish drowned in heavenly chillies. Service is great but a booking is a must otherwise you might have to sit at the bar for dinner, missing out on the experience.
L. X.
A interesting spin of western influence on traditional Chinese cuisine. Not like authentic Chinese but very interesting spin on the food. It is somewhere in the middle. Great restaurant and atmosphere as well as helpful attentative staff!
C. C.
My favourite Asian restaurant for a fine dining experience. Food is consistently excellent albeit pricey and a bit on the dark ambience side. Great place
A. C.
The beef with cumin was the best Asian beef I've had. Every cube was medium rare, melt in your mouth texture with a mixture of spice and flavour unsurpassed by all. The pork belly was tender and juicy with perfect crackling balanced by the freshness of corinader and the crunch of peanuts and sesame seeds. Devine!
L. D.
Asian fusion at its best, a place where the food, service, wine and ambience collide into one seamless dining experience. This is not your everyday run of the mill Asian restaurant this is another one of those dining experiences that you have to do more than once. Tell Christian I sent you.
P. H.
Great atmosphere, food and of course service. Recommended to go.
p. B.
No spice what's so ever great flavor's the red writing on the menu indicate hot ,but far from it ,we had drowned fish hardly any fish in it and that was for $49 ,overall good but disappointed.
A. v. D.
was granted to have dinner with a group of 5 tonight. albeit being a Wednesday, the place was full!
their kitchen is somekind of fusion asian and works with a combination of spices that ive never encounterred before. the result is pure magic. we had fish, chicken, pork, beef and eggrolls that were prepared with the utmost care and diabolical knowledge of spices.
for those who had a week throat they had prepared counter measures like cucumber and coal, marinated to calm the fire in your mouth.
the service was great, only noticeable when you needed them.
the atmosphere is a bit dark, they use the ceiling for spotlights and it does work well.
One major disaster at the end of a heavenly dinner: they dont serve espresso coffee.
the filter coffee they do serve is out of balance with all they offered so far. what a waste..
Having said that, I will definitely go there again, and take an espresso somewhere else out in the street.
V. D.
The LED screen door was worth the price of the dinner ... almost! But the Pig, Deer and Monkey cocktails sealed the deal. delicious food, awesome service and lots of wow.
Y. J.
Love the atmosphere of this place. So dark and mysterious! The cocktail menu was interesting!! And definitely have to try the chilli items on the menu...great for people with a taste for spicy food!
S. U.
The atmosphere at the restaurant was really good. Plus the food is unique and definitely a good flavour. However it was a bit pricey so make sure you budget accordingly. Try the Kung Pao Chicken for a real unique experience.
L.
My favourite restaurant in Sydney hands down. Amazing service and so accommodating even for vegan and gluten-free options :)
M. S.
Great meal and fantastic sharing options.
Was not disappointed , high quality food.
This is our second time here and will be back again for our next special occasion.
A. S.
Great choice even for vegetarians, hot pot is the high point and great desserts
S. M.
The most dimly lit restaurant in Sydney. Best prawn toast I've ever eaten. Arrive sober or you'll fall down the stairs. Ladies, leave your heels at home.
S. W.
Fantastic food. The 'strange flavour white cut chicken' is to die for. The best surprise dish on the menu. Cocktails are great too.
A. L.
Very nice ambiance and very decent amount of dishes with the banquets. Recommend for business lunches and dinners.
M. C. C.
The XO Pipies with crispy noodle is delish!!!
M. B.
Food is above average. Service is average. There are no negatives but i was expecting something in the range between chin chin and mr wongs. Its not what I got. But its a good feed with a higher range price attached with it.
P. S.
Incredible food and atmosphere. Loved every moment and the staff were amazing. Definitely coming back!
T. R.
A little expensive but mist things are in the CBD but it is definitely a great experience. Best to share plates rather than order entree/main individually. Service very attentive & lighting/ambience very cool.
P. R.
Welcome to paradise -> Three milk cake with dried raspberries, pistachio and almond.
#buynow
J. L.
If you are in for a dining experience that excites your mouth's senses, then this is a restaurant for you. The staff is very friendly and food was unexplainable. Dishes like Tingling prawns, and numbing wagyu beef leaves your mouth salivating for more. It is a little pricey, but is worth the money for a mouth tingling experience.
S. K.
The food was good, the selection of wines was great as well but the service was slower than average wait times at other restaurants.
T. H.
My whole family's favourite restaurant! Amazing flavours with great service. Interesting and delicious cocktails too.
S. S.
Gorgeous decor and vibe. Friendly waitress , Good. portions sizes. AMAZING food.
H. O.
Why is this place so dark?! Without the sommelier on shift, the wait staff tend to get really confused about wine choices! Other than that, the food was great! Do try the peking duck and numbing beef!
p. k.
Outstanding spicy negroni, deliciously spicy menu ...the yellow fin tuna the highlight, excellent company , beautiful pinot grigio but something missing??
c. y.
my family and having the dinner and the food has been amazing.
the food is fresh and hot and you know you are getting exactly what you order
J. W.
Top notch service from start to finish. Authentic and delicious Chinese cuisine. Lovely front desk staff, helpful waiter, perfect experience.
T. Z.
Very spicy food. Very very delicious. Great take on traditional Asian cuisine. Atmosphere spot on. Great for date nights.
J. S.
Had a top quality meal here
A. T.
I've been to Spice temple on 4 occasions and have loved every single dish. Well presented, great variety and well priced
D. M.
Great Indian right in the middle of the city. The decor is really great providing an intimate atmosphere. Not the cheapest place around but if you're after a special place for a special occasion, then look no further.
M. L.
Organised a private function there for a small group - some with tricky dietary requirements - The team at the Spice Temple could not have been more helpful - we finally left after midnight, having had the most amazing night and food.
A. S.
Amazing food. Made the mistake of filling up early and not being able to sample all the dishes. Particularly loved the duck
A. B.
Spice Temple have some amazing dishes. Watch out for the chillies! Great atmosphere (so long as you like it dark) and great service.
F. V.
The food here was superb. Great value for money. Would definitely go again. The service was average but the food is what made it for me. You should all go.
R. W.
Excellent environment and meal, slight twist on tradition Chinese, excellent flavours and presentation. Good range of drinks. Cool entry door.
R. N.
Good food and good atmosphere. Can be busy so better to book in advance.
J. S.
always a must if looking for something fine dining but different in sydney! love the atmosphere and service! ensure you book a head to get a great table that is how they are assinged no other criteria!
K. Y.
Loved the interior of the place... Dark, modern and literally underground :) large menu selection and really amazing food 😎 service was very attentive despite the large and crowded place.. I would definitely recommend it!
J. W.
Delicious. Lunch here is the best, you're not going to want to stop eating, you'll probably want to turn it into a dinner meal too. Have to go for the pork ribs.
M. G.
Good place with friendly and professional staff.
Unfortunately, the vegetarian option on the menu is limited.
H. J.
Fave restaurant! My fiancé took me here after he proposed because he knows how much I love lamb and cumin pancake and the numbing pork! Also love the hole in the wall vibe.
F. H.
Good range of Asian cuisine, the artwork and menu is a bit fancy. Good atmosphere, food and service, therefore menu prices reflects this.
L. K.
Excellent! Passion fruit cocktail was so refreshing! Vibrant, in both color and taste, the Kong Pao veal sweetbreads was amazing!
N. S.
If you're looking for excellent service, food and ambience look no further! Can't go wrong with Spice Temple, definitely the favourite pick from Neil Perry': restaurants
M. J.
Such a wonderful experience, the staff were so warm and welcoming and the food was incredible.
B. Y.
We had the golden banquet and it was great. If you are after a high-end meal but still worth the money you spend, this is a good choice.
N. B.

D. Z.
Good place for a quick lunch, interesting Chinese Fusion food, portion is big, service is excellent.
A.
Everything at this place was 5 stars! The ambience of the restaurant, the service and the food were amazing! Will definitely be returning!
A.
Unfortunately this is not a restaurant to go to impress your taste buds, however, it is a place to go to woo your date. Be warned, it is a quiet restaurant, you'll have ample opportunity to talk!
D. D.
Perfect Ambience.. the banquet menu , sensational.
K.
Always a top Rockpool restaurant to go to. I also recommend checking out the bar; the drinks (alcoholic and non alcoholic) are some of the best in all of Sydney.
M. C.
My favorite fancy restaurant. Atmosphere, decor, service, and food are all top notch. The wine list is superb.
D. S.
Came here last week and must say the food was bloody lovely. Cant recommend anything more than the three flavours dish, blew me away!!!
M. P.
Food was delicious but I would not call it spicy unfortunately..Also i thought food was quite oily as well..good spot however and good cocktails..overall loved the experience..!
J. V.
Service has gone down hill .. menu was limited on a Saturday night, really? Cocktails were basically shots. Not the sort of service I’d expect for a ‘top class’ restaurant and probably won’t be back
C. G.
Nice atmosphere, professional staff and food is ok, nothing special for the prices you pay, wouldn't recommend above any other decent Chinese or Asian restaurant.
D. S. B.
Amazing place for modern Chinese food. If you like spicy food, this place will be a unique sensation for your taste buds
S. J.
Amazing, love it. The food is amazing. Dark intimate setting could not recommend it enough if you like spicy food.

E. S.
Absolutely delicious food, I love the spice and great cocktails. Definitely on the pricey side!
S. N.
This place has great food but it is very dark and hidden away. The food is very spciy and difficult to see what you are eating. It is cosy.
B. F.
One of our favourite Sydney restaurants. Excellent cocktails and very interesting take on Asian cuisine.
L. C.
I couldn't find anything I didn't want to try at Spice Temple, the ribs, prawn wontons and 3 shot chicken were great. Definitely will be back.
J. B.
Love it. The duck package dish is my favourite dish in all of Sydney. Mouth watering!
M. J.
Incredible food and excellent service/recommendations from staff. Pork belly in coriander salad was my favourite.
P. L.
Interesting experience , non-authentic, and pricy . Not recommended to real Chinese food lovers . But not bad for European wanting a taste of Chinese .
B. T.
Great Ambiance, unusual and delishious food & drinks excellent service and not rushed. Pricey but worth it imo.
K. B.
Exquisite dishes... The kung pao chicken had less chicken and more chilli! The golden banquet is a must try!
B. A. P.
Interesting dishes. Very low lighting. Expensive. Always feel a bit rushed when you have a "window/seating time" booking.
B. S.
We ate here 3 times while our stay in Sydney. Everything was super tasty.
B. T.
Great service and Brilliant lunch. Numbing pork, prawn wonton and kung pao chicken the highlights.

Food tastes good, but need to say the seasoning is a little altered to suit the local taste buds.
M. P.
The food is superb and the service is even better. High quality modern Asian cuisine

K. H.
This was my 6th visit I made on 22 of Jun 2017 the food is still great, how ever service is very poor they are like robots no life..... Mr Perry take note.

Great dark underground atmosphere. Amazing food... very spicy!
A. M.
Pretty average considering it’s reputation and price. Over fussy food and why so dark??
A. P.
The food here is something else. Word of warning you may spend a little on sparkling water too unexpectedly.
R. W. S.
Service excellent with great food however not sure if food is good value.
M. A.
