Comments of The Gidley

The Gidley
A drop dead gorgeous steak house on the corner of Elizabeth and King st. It was extremely well decorated with old fashioned furniture/artworks to fit the theme of a classy old school american steak diner and coupled with the option of a private poker room it seemed like the perfect birthday celebration for my friend. While I could go on and on about how beautifully set up everything was, giving an amazing atmosphere to dine in, the food truly had to be the highlight of the night. While most Sydney steakhouses spoil you with a plethora of steak options, The Gidley offers an extremely modest selection of steaks from the Rib-eye bone in or boneless, a classic english roast cut and even the prized spinalis cut of the rib-eye (which I didn’t even know was possible to sell) and to everyone's benefit made ordering much easier as the waiter recommended to share a bit of everything which was a spot on as you’ll be wanting to go back and forth comparing outstanding steaks with each other. The sides that we ordered to pair with the steaks are extremely rich in flavor and of a high standard but something more noteworthy would be their “Gidley” burger. I can’t say too but if you are a burger fan please do yourself a favor and order it. Desserts were also great as it’s their twist of a classic American dessert done well. While I wish I could say everything was excellent that night, the truth is it wasn't for me personally…
Having experienced fine dining restaurants a handful of times, I understand the pretentious “rules” that follow whether it’d be wearing smart attire, avoiding causing disturbances and enjoying the food their way however under these circumstances I would expect excellence and near perfection for hospitality and service. The Gidley’s makes great recommendations for food, drinks and being in the private room, extremely attentive but that’s unfortunately where it ends. The restaurant prides themselves on the rule “refrain from using mobile phones in the dining room” and I’m not too sure to what degree they enforce this but the waiter felt the need to make this comment to the entire table while I was caught taking some memorable photos. He would continue to mention that guests would have their phones confiscated in a jovial manner which I unappreciated. While I respect and understand the idea of avoiding phones at dinner tables to encourage more conversation with friends and loved ones, I simply felt that being almost mocked for holding my phone (while trying to take photos and recommending The Gidley to family) was rude service and too far. Furthermore, I again felt like I was dealt the shortest straw because one of the worst possible things was to transpire after our meal. During the clean up, the waiter impressively stacks 20 or so dishes, knives and forks, steak bits/bones and juices and crumbs… only it wasn't impressive and completely lost balance in front of my face. I must’ve had really great foresight that day because I chose to wear black and saying that my whole attire was soiled and bruised may be an understatement. I realize that mistakes can happen ruining the established vibes of a party was not something I was looking to do. Despite the waiter being extremely apologetic I still felt that this was completely unacceptable and while they gave us more drinks, I still felt uncompensated for my completely ruined outfit and experience.
If you value food and a great steak, this place might be for you. If you value the wholesome experience of a true dining restaurant this place might not be. For me personally, as someone who frequents many Sydney restaurants with my family, I will not be coming back. There are other steak places.

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to The Gidley and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an excellent fine dining establishment.
There is a great selection of delicious food on the menu and whatever you order, you won't be disappointed. Make sure you leave room for dessert to finish your night off.
I enjoyed the atmosphere as it wasn't noisy even when it was at its busiest, so it's fantastic for catch ups or dates. No phones are allowed in the main dining area, but that's not necessarily a bad things as it encourages you to fully enjoy your dining experience.
The service is impeccable and the staff are very hospitable and attentive. They look after guests very well!
F.
The steak and service were both more impressive than Bistecca based on my own experience. The medium was perfect to me. I do prefer the interior of Bistecca though. Same no phone allowed in the dining room.
V. V.
Exceeded all my expectations. Magnificent service and atmosphere, staff were super friendly and made excellent recommendations. Food was excellent of course, ordered the burger as an appetiser and honestly could have ended the meal there it was that good.
Loved the no phone policy, definitely need to do this more when I go out.
Will definitely be back again.

So I went to The Gidley for my 20th birthday with a party of 9 and this experience was nothing short of immaculate. The Spinalis steak was the star of the show! Everyone on the table loved how it melted in our mouths, many others agreed that it was the best steak we've ever had. The Gidley Burger was one of the best burgers we've ever had, the bun were cut to perfection. It was so smooth and the meat melted in our mouths. Nicholas, our waiter, was so funny and accomdating by explaining all the dishes in detail. We all shared the English Cut, Prawn Cocktails, Scallops, Mac & Cheese, Fries, Potato Gratin & Garlic Mushrooms which were all very good. The Gidley Negroni and Tequila Gimlet were amazing drinks in the lounge. The vibe was amazing with low key lighting which felt very prestigious and comfortable. I would 100% return again to try more of the drinks and revisit the Spinalis and The Gidley Burger. They take your phone off of you which we didn't mind so I didn't take much photos but this is a MUST GO in Sydney! If no one took pictures of this, you wouldn't believe how amazing this place is! Thank you for the complimentary bagle and chocolate coins too but most importantly, thank you to The Gidley for a memorable 20th birthday!

When you're looking for the place, look for the sign above and then walk down the stairs to find the door to enter the restaurant. The staff were really friendly and explained the menu to us. Note, that they will put your phone in a bag so you can enjoy the dining experience. The let down for me was the rib eye, it was chewy and not as soft as I hoped it would be. On a positive note, they did an amazing job with the garlic mushrooms, best I've ever had!
J. S.
I've been here 7 times in the last 9 months. I literally can't stay away.
Whether it's a full sit down dinner bringing every friend I can to this place or just popping in during lunch for a burger, you cannot go wrong.
Faultless service every single time, food is perfection and the place itself is immaculate.
Big shoutout to all the wait staff. Every time I've gone they've gone above and beyond with information about the food, wine or just bantering back and forth. 10/10 which you won't get anywhere else.
If you have a chance, go. Get the cheeseburger and then get another one...and another. You won't regret it.

I took my partner here for his birthday dinner. The customer service here is amazing. We were running late for our reservation but when calling, the host made it so easy for us and was so accommodating. We had the Gidley burger, Mac and cheese and spinali steak. We enjoyed everything, the burger and steak were so tasty and juicy. Would recommend for a nice dinner and good customer service.

This steakhouse is a hidden gem in the centre of the CBD, where you have to ring the buzzer to enter the restaurant! There is a strict no phone policy which I liked cause it forces you to socialise with your friends. I asked kindly before attending to bring my camera to get some shot and I was allowed to.
Highly recommend the burger. It was one of the best burgers I’ve ever had in my life! The beef patty is dry aged for 100 days so it was so tasty. And I loved how they served it tableside!
For steaks the Gidley cut was a prime rib roast so it was very tender and was thickly cut served with a red wine jus. The rib eye was was char grilled over bark and charcoal so it was super fatty and I loved the charred crust! The Spinalis was super tender and succulent. Highly recommend the truffle mushroom butter to pair with the steaks! Also the truffle Mac & cheese was my favourite side here! The housemade bread/bagel was also sooo good, served with the amazing beef fat butter.
The pecan pie and s’mores dessert were both nice but not sure I would order again, as it was a bit sweet for my liking.
Overall would definitely go back as I loved the vibes and food here!

Best streak I've had in recent memory. FYI, this is a no phone service: prepare to be unreachable for the 2-3 hour sitting. You'll get your phone back once you've finished your meal. I like it -- novel, and made me realise how often I'm referring to information online during a social dinner. Also -- no chance for photos! Loved the U-booth seating.
Great menu items; entres and mains -- nothing could be faulted. Asp
Will be going again. Recommended for an intimate dinner for 2-6.

The ambience was nice!
Ordered the English cut steak, was average.
However, the starters: oysters and prawn cocktail and the sides garlic mushroom was so good.
Next time, I"ll order the burgers. The next table had burgers and it looked amazing!
L. H.
I enjoyed being at the Gidley from start to finish. They have incredible service, where the staff are really attentive, explain the menu and each dish well, provide great recommendations and check in on you throughout the meal to ensure you're enjoying everything. The oysters were DIVINE! Highly recommend the ribeye on the bone, I ordered the 700g. The spinalis is also a really rich and buttery cut, which I enjoyed but wouldn't eat a huge quantity of. I couldn't help but sneak a few pictures to remember how beautiful the food was. Absolutely love this place, will be returning!
A. N.
Absolutely loved it! Great bar area to have a few drinks pre- or post-dinner. The food was absolutely amazing! The steak was cooked prefectly! Even the burgers are a must try. Very cosy ambiance and very well decorated and comfortable seating.
M. W.
No photos allowed - so you can’t see the tasty treats. The hostess was very helpful. They didn’t have an item or two on the menu, however 1st weekend coming out of lockdown was to be expected.
J. B.
Sister restaurant to Bistecca, equally quality dinning experience (6/5).
Dark lit rooms, old school authentic fit out with fantastic service (waiters/bartenders on point), and impeccable food. If you like steak this is definitely a place you need to check out!
J. J.
Excellent service, delicious food and a great atmosphere
L. H.
Awesome service and food.
Thoroughly enjoyed it.
z.
I really enjoyed the lunch I had at the gidley. The steak was perfect, and all the sides that we ordered were fantastic too. I liked how they take your phones to stop people from taking photos as I myself find it very annoying when friends take photos and all I want to do is eat.

What: A great restaurant with a splendid ambience and a lounge truly worth having pre-dinner drinks in.
Why: The ambience, the steak, the rest of the food, the War and Peace of wine lists (that is considered despite its girth), the service, the Negronis and the Martinis (yes, do go out of your way to taste them both). This is a place to sit back, forget about any rush you might happen to be in, and enjoy your choice of food and drink.
Why not: Not much. They don't allow you to use your mobile in the restaurant so if you're obsessive about that sort of thing or you only go there to Instagram the food then this may not be the place for you.
A. F.
Brilliant dining experience. Food, wine and cocktails were stunning, set in a beautiful venue. Can't wait to come back. Big thanks to Vinnie, Ben, Matt and Cat!
S. H.
Great food! The burger is incredible!
D. C.
A very classy steakhouse. In the basement of 161 King Street which use to be Subsolo. Great steaks served in many different ways. The steak only comes in rare to medium rare which was probably the only downside. The oysters were fresh, the mac and cheese and fruits were delicious and the greens were crunchy. The burger was good, too.
P. S.
To say that the spinalis steak was the best I've had anywhere is an understatement. This was just amazing. And the ambience and service here was excellent. Staff are well present. Serve well and make sure you're never short on your drink. No mobiles allowed inside so you can't be on your phone all night. You enjoy the food and the company you're with. Worth a visit. This is a place that needs to be ok every foodies to do list.
C. L.
Had booked Bistecca, but a burst water main meant our booking was moved to the Gidley. Was not disappointed! Great atmosphere and service; attentive without being over bearing. Creative cocktails, well cooked steak (not well done!) and tasty sides. Highly recommend!
A. C.
We celebrated my partner's birthday here last night. Absolutely incredible. Beautiful atmosphere and amazing service. Everyone we spoke to was so polite and engaging. The food was out of this world! For the level of service and quality of food, very reasonably priced. Thanks for a great night!
E. K.
The Gidley is a quality restaurant hidden away underground in the Sydney CBD. As soon as you walk in through the doors the mood changes and it feels like you’ve gone back in time. The bar/lounge area has nice ambiance where you can wait with a delicious cocktail before dinner. Take note that once you leave the bar area and enter the dining room you cannot have your phone. It will be taken by the waiter.
The spinalis steak is one of the most delicious, succulent steaks I’ve ever had. It is on the slightly fattier side but it is flavourful and you will be left wanting more.
A. C.
Cool decor. Couldn’t take many pictures of dinner as they take your phone as you enter the dining room. Service was good, everything was cooked well and overall was a good experience.
J. B.
Spinalis (little steak) is one of the best every. It is a rare cut and the texture and favour was sensational. The leaner English Cut was also melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Awesome service and very comfortable sitting. You'll never want to leave.
s. f.
Love the ambiance, the decor is superb and the food exceptional - especially the rib-eye. The staff were great, and the recommendation to share dishes meant the 4 of us got to try more dishes than ordering individually. To top it off, the wine was excellent! Can't wait to go back.
F. M.
Amazing experience and amazing food! Vinni gave us the best service ever as well! Thank you
A. T.
Easy favourite. High expectations after trying Bistecca, however this was incredible. Everything we tried (Gidley Cut, Spinalis, Mac & Cheese, Potato Gratin and Brussel Salad + Pecan Pie) was phenomenal. I don’t know what to say other than try it out as soon as possible. Don’t have a lot of photos to include unfortunately. They take your phones when you arrive so that the conversation is always flowing. It works. Had a great night all around.
B. W.
Great atmosphere and excellent service. Definitely an experience that you will want to keep going back! Fresh seafood and delicious creative cocktails.
J. W.
Hands down the best food I've had.. Great set up.. Love the no phone idea..
H. N.
Would definitely return and recommend my friends to this restaurant. The experience I had at The Gidley was exception from start to finish. I loved the idea of 'no phone policy' as it allows more intimate quality time with my partner. We were celebrating her birthday and were treated to a lovely birthday jelly cake and song by the staffs. The service was outstanding between every staff member we dealt with, they made us feel very welcomed and comfortable. Can't stress enough how the service boosted our night.
My favourite food on the menu was the Spinalis here but the ribeye was not far second. The side dishes were also amazing, having the mac&cheese and potato gratin. Nice atmosphere, exceptional service and delicious food, the perfect combination, a definite winner.
C. T.
This place is probably the best place to eat in Sydney! My partner and I were deciding between dinner here or at The Rockpool. We are both so glad that we chose here! The atmosphere, decor, food and fabulous service... there’s really nothing to fault about this place.
Make sure you arrive a little bit before your booking time so that you can relax in the formal bar area. The staff here are incredibly knowledgeable about what they’re serving and are more than happy to have a chat about the menu options and to recommend a cocktail. I opted for the New York Sour and was not disappointed. The drink was smooth, easy to drink and delicious. It was served in a beautiful glass with a perfectly clear large cube ice block, the whole thing was quite a spectacle!
When you enter the dining area you have to hand your phone in for collection until the end as they have a strict “no technology” policy while you’re eating. This really added to the atmosphere.
The staff know their stuff when it comes to the menu. Everything looks absolutely amazing but after a brief chat we decided to have the Gidley Burger shared as an entree. This was the most amazing burger I have ever tasted, the beef is actually made from a retired dairy cow and served on a milk bun... I can’t even put words to how good this was...if you’re in Sydney you have to try this.
Thank you to The Gidley and their staff for making our holiday very special 💜
C. T.
Awesome decor, amazing food and great service. We were delightfully surprised to be suggested to quarter and share one of the cheeseburgers within our group (not something I would typically do at a place focused on great steak), and we loved it. Everything about The Gidley is what belongs in the excellent Sydney food scene. Obsessed with their pecan pie.
J. B.
The presentation and sides offered by their classic martini was very impressive. Served with citrus bites and even a little bottle of very pungent olive brine for that added king. The true James Bond Experience
L.
Had some issues booking online, thought I'd reserved a table in the restaurant but when I showed up, they said there was no reservation at all. A bit disappointing. They seated us at the bar area and we had probably the most delicious experience of our lives - oysters, scallops, delicious cheese and cocktails... Definitely wasn't phased by the annoying booking issue. Can't wait to book an actual table there later on!
K.
Great experience, the atmosphere and service was very nice. We ordered quite a lot of food and there was very little left by the end.
Had a booking where it was fairly busy so had to be split off into 2 tables for around 10 -15 mins where drinks were served until the main table was ready.
Steaks were all well cooked, wine was fantastic and service was great. Highlight of the table was the gidley burgers, they were pretty good. No phone policy was pretty cool too. All in all a good experience.
M.
Dined here over the weekend for my boyfriend's birthday. I had extremely high expectations for the steaks, however, was quite a letdown for me personally. Ordered the Gidley Cut (could only get through one piece) and Spinalis, on their menu it states "arguably the most succulent cut in the world", I would beg the differ. It was average at best. Nothing to write home about..
I will say, the burger was quite amazing. The only letdown was the added bacon. It made the burger quite salty, tasty, but salty.
Highlight was the Mac and Cheese and surprisingly the Green Beans. Flavour explosions on both dishes. I also thoroughly enjoyed the Pecan Pie - wish there was more ice cream!
I really enjoyed the wine and the ambience. Also, thank you to The Gidley team for giving my boyfriend a "birthday jelly cake"!
Final thoughts, I'd only really go back to The Gidley for the burger and some sides.
I. M.
Mikee the venue manager was a legend. Hidden basement entry follows on from Bistecca backdoor Entry which is very cool. Burger was great. Staff knowledgeable and friendly. Would happily go back!
E. K.
Behind a green door and down a dark flight of stairs is a portal to a dimension of space that feels like a New York steakhouse, but is in fact one of Sydney’s best (and hidden restaurants) in the CBD. The ‘no-phone policy’ is actually not a big deal and serves its intended purpose of re-creating a culture of ‘talking to other people’. The cocktails and wine are superb. But the reason we came here was for the burger and steak. The burger mince apparently comes from a retired Dairy Cow (basically the happiest beef on earth) and the taste equals the best burger I’ve ever eaten (and trust me, I’ve eaten many). The 1kg rib-eye on the bone is an unctuous plate of beef grilled over iron bark. The more sides you choose, the happier you will be, but remember to bring a group of your best friends so you can order more. Lastly, a dessert of pecan pie with buttermilk ice cream and a glass of ice Riesling will end your night on a high. Book far in advance and you will be rewarded with an exceptional dining experience.
D. D.
Had amazing service from the moment we entered until the very moment we left. Amazing location with a great vibe and lovely atmosphere. The food was also jaw dropping. Some of the most flavoursome food I’ve ever eaten. The no phone policy was great and made me appreciate the experience so much more. If I come back to Sydney, you can guarantee I will be coming back.
k. m.
Phenomenal service and exceptional food - probably the best rib eye I’ve ever had. The ambience was that surreal it felt like like I was in an alternate universe. Would definitely recommend and can’t wait to visit again.
M. E.
First time I went to the Gidley it was an amazing experience/food with a booking for the dining room... After finding out there is no bookings required for the lounge room we sought to come back again...
The second time when my partner and I thought to head down to the Gidley today (to have an amazing burger and drove all the way to the city for this specific restaurant) we were declined upon entry at 6pm. We were greeted by a lady and we mentioned it was only for the lounge and to have a burger and dessert. However- only was offered a quick drink and to leave in 15 minutes... We understand it was a Friday night, but we were only a group of 2 and happy to wait for any available time slots later on, (it was still early and seemed empty). Not to be kicked out with no other suggestions.
Moral of the story here is don't rely on the "walk-in" lounge experience, best to book for dining room only. Future advice for the restaurant: please include lounge bookings as well or provide other time alternatives for customers if busy.
5 stars for food.
3 for service/organisation.
C. K.
Great food and cocktails are all good. Simple menu and cocktail list but beautifully executed. Brilliant atmosphere. Staff love the burger and so di I . Do not judge until you have one. Amazing!
T. E.
I would have to say that the staff was one of the most welcoming I’ve ever experienced. Almost everyone said “hello” when we got there and then said “have a great night” when we left. Our waitress Heather was incredibly friendly and made great suggestions in regards to the menu. Awesome experience, we will be back for sure next time we’re in the area!
A. W.
Bisteca but with more of a NYC vibe. Staff were excellent from the moment we arrived, drinks were strong and well made. Food was cooked perfectly. It's pricey, but worth it.
R. A.
AMAZING place. Read the good reviews and still impressed. Hands down the service they give is amazing from the minute you walk in- every single staff. Not only that but the food was great. Steak was amazing. We ordered the English cut and the spinalis and stuffed ourselves with some side dishes. Definitely going again. Worth every penny
A. S.
The food. Phenomenal.
The Spinalis and the story behind it given by your servers provided a rich insight.
The Service. Impeccable.
I highly value service and the experience was memorable, inviting warm and exceptional.
All were great but please extend our thanks to Sherry who was our server. Friendly, sharp, shared humour doubting my capabilities in demolishing the rib eye AND the Spinalis.
The nearby neighbours did cause a bit of a ruckus but your product and your service did elevate my expectations and this outweighed in such a positive takeaway I would definitely return. Well done.
E. L.
Just finished dinner here and the no phones policy is great and forces you to interact with your friends. I must say that besides the food being fabulous, the vibe and service of the (mainly overseas) staff is perfect. We made a point of asking where everyone was from and Poland seems to be the most common (we found a token Aussie). Staff were really friendly and we had a good time bantering with them - no one was in a rush to “move you along”
Dark lighting helps keep the mood sexy and mysterious. Definitely a good place for a date or better still, dinner with a group of friends to share the amazing Food (large portions)
No photos cos no phones policy
M. C.
A tucked away gem in the heart of the city. The meat is cooked to perfection and the service is on point. The bar area and the staff only add to the experience. +1 for the curated beer list. Recommended
G. G.
Surely one of the countries finest establishments. Stellar service and fantastic food with atmosphere to match.
L. E.
Great atmosphere and service. Truly unique cocktails and really well cooked steaks. Great for a date night or a night out with the lads/ladies.
Definitely try the Burger and the Banana Split Manhattan.
H. B.
Absolutely outstanding!
Great food and even better service.
We started with prawns, the waitress recommended to wrap the crunchy prawn heads in the lettuce cups. It was insanely good!
Next we met ‘Damien’ and ‘Christian’ these guys sure knew their wine. They both explained in detail their favourite bottles from the extensive wine menu provided. We were not disappointed with our choice - Jim Barry, McRae Wood.
Damien suggested we try two steaks that were cooked differently. They were cooked perfectly. Both melted in your mouth. We couldn’t decide which was our favourite!
The sides... WOW!! Roast potatoes, Mac and cheese, garlic mushrooms and crunchy green beans, YUM! I’ve never tasted Mac and cheese like it :)
We got the s’mores for dessert and they were astonishing, the perfect treat to share.
I would upload photos but we gave our phones at the start of dinner as requested so we could enjoy the whole experience!
This is now our favourite restaurant in Sydney and we WILL be back very soon.
Thanks for your amazing service Damien. Oh...and the doggy bag ;)
A. L.
i order roast gidley cut and my wife order spinalis, nice and not expensive. spinalis is really soft and good taste.
Their cocktail is quite nice decoration, but the straw give me a good impression, first time saw that kind of special straw.
overall is good, nice service and you wont feel not enough staff, polite and describe very clear of the menu.
A. P.
The food here is truly exquisite. A beautiful dining experience for my wife and I for our anniversary. We will definitely be back more often.
I highly recommend the burger as an entree - and the spinalis was absolutely divine.
M. R.
Sydney's best cheeseburger & steak - hands down!
The staff are very attentive but not overbearing by any means. Great recommendations and a great vibe - will be back, many times to come!
T. G.
The best burger you will ever eat in your life.
J. A.
Great little place in the heart of the city. Hands down serve the best burger I've had in a bar. Dining experience is nice, staff could be sometimes over bearing. Steak was enjoyable, cooked nicely. Nice selection of sides to go with intricate mains.
T. V.
I hadn’t heard of The Gidley until I by chance walked by and saw the cute sign that’s on King Street right outside. I had been to their sister restaurant, Bistecca, and that was a fantastic dinner, so it was only fair to try The Gidley! The steak was perfect, as was the dirty martini. I was hoping they would have the melted candle as they do in Bistecca, but they instead had some mini bagels and dips. Absolutely zero complaints, but I did prefer the candle! Would (and have!) recommend this to anyone who would like a nice night out and I can’t wait to come back!
A. N.
The food here was amazing, especially the burger and steaks, a must try in Sydney. Lovely ambience with excellent service. Perfect for a special occasion dinner or a romantic night out!
S. F.
Beautiful food and great service - a wonderful experience!
M. H.
Food and cocktails were great also the "no phones" rule was actually really nice
J.
This place is a hidden gem. Top notch friendly and professional service. We were lucky enough to dine in the wine room which made our team dinner an exceptionally memorable experience. I actually found the no phones at the table policy a very refreshing concept - something more restaurants should definitely do to bring back a social dining experience! The food was fantastic, the cooking truly paying homage to the food itself. I will definitely consider coming back for a special occasion.
u. o.
Absolutely loved senor frogs! The drinks were amazing and the staff Cesar and Elvira were so friendly. The best part was the photographer with the sombreros. Definitely made great memories here! If your in town make sure to stop by!
T. L.
Wow one of the best new restaurants in town. Reminds me of Peter Lugers in Brooklyn. The meat is cooked to perfection as expected and the banana split old fashion is a mandatory beverage! They take away your phones at the table which is actually a great idea. One can actually listen to each other properly with no screen time distractions.
a. a.
This is a must have try for anyone who enjoys good food and good service. The staff are incredible, try all the drinks - I would especially recommend the cafe express for an after dinner treat! Some of the best quality food from start to finish
R. H.
Food, drinks ambience was nice.
A little too aggressive with the no phone policy. I agree with the concept and actually think it’s a good way to encourage quality time, however I felt that the waiters went about it in the wrong way. I preferred to keep my phone in my bag, waiter asked me to remove it from there and to “hurry up” as he watched me place it in a zip bag provided by them. Made me feel like a kid in detention, super uncomfortable!
O. M.
A classy hidden steakhouse gem, epic cocktails and food, a great place for big meals with clients. Loved the big round table in the wine room. Lovely friendly staff, I recommend the cocktails. I had one with coconut and truffle, can’t say I’d done that before. It was yum. Highly recommend you fill you boots up.

Sensational food. Great service. A no-phones policy takes you back to an era where there were no distractions. Just you, your guests and meaningful conversation. Great food... no wait... Sublime food, and a great wine and whiskey list!
B. M.
A hidden gem - beautiful restaurant with possibly one of the juiciest burgers I’ve ever eaten. The steak is cooked perfectly and the service was on point. Would recommend to anyone keen for a steak / burger.
D. Y.
Woah. Loved every part of this experience and will be raving about it.
Food, service, ambience just all top notch. Highly recommend the prawn cocktail. The burger!! (Dreaming about it again already! 🍔!!) The spinalis steak! The garlic mushrooms.
Easily a new favourite in Sydney.
T. M.
Exceptional experience- reminded us a lot of Hubert. The menu was extremely fun- the burger was hands down the best we’ve ever had. Damien and the rest of the team provided amazing service. Will definitely be back :)
F. T.
Wow, this is my new favourite place for steaks in Sydney. We ordered the english cut and spinalis plus 2 sides, starters and we were struggling to finish it all. The drinks were amazing. Can't wait to go back soon! Love the idea about storing the mobiles away.
J. D.
Great food, great atmosphere, and great service!
Had a tasty cocktail on arrival, one of the best cuts of steak I’ve ever had in my entire life for dinner and a beautiful cheesecake for dessert. Want to thank our waitress Jo for her awesome service and great banter, and Damian for some solid recommendations!
J. M.
I took my husband here for his birthday and we had a fantastic time. The atmosphere was great, perfect music and a buzz of chatter from the other patrons but not so loud you couldn’t have a normal conversation.
The waiter was fantastic - extremely professional, we felt very looked after but left alone at the same time.
I had asked for a glass of champagne each on arrival when I booked online and it arrived to our table just as we sat down. We ordered an amazing steak, along with the potato gratin, shaved Brussel sprouts and broccolini - all delicious.
We will definitely be back!
J. G.
Absolutely amazing hidden steak house in Sydney CBD. The food was amazing, steaks were cooked to perfection and the sides were delish! The staff made our experience even better polite and friendly. We also loved the idea of no mobile phones during dinner, it helps create a really awesome dining experience. Highly recommend going here.

Thought I had reviewed this already but obviously not. My favourite restaurant/bar in Australia (possibly in the world) right now. The service exceptional both in the bar and dining room. Obviously have done a great job hiring some hospo heavy weights and it really shows. From the alcohol to the food. Love the bar/lounge feel before heading to your table and fantastic cocktails. Food itself is amazing with some really great cuts of meat. One I had actually never tried before (spinalis). The burger is awesome (add bacon for sure) and the seafood is really great as well. Make sure you try the clams. Fantastic wine list that is really complimentary of the food. Over all and as mentioned probably my favourite food and booze experience anywhere right now.

What an incredible meal, can't go wrong with the steaks, sponalos and rib eye. The gratin is incredible and smore for dessert, also banana split fashioned! The service was on point, friendly knowledgeable staff!

Wow. Just wow! Best steak in Sydney, without question. Sensational sides. A wine list to die for. Attentive staff. I love the no phone policy! Pricey, but worth it!

Really disappointed by this restaurant. We were so looking forward to it after visiting Bistecca but it’s not even in the same league.
They lock the door to the restaurant so we had to stand buzzing for quite some time and only after ringing two times did we eventually get let in. The fitout was incredible and the bar staff really knowledgeable and offering a great range of drinks. Our table wasn’t ready so we had a drink and once it was ready we were told we could move or stay and finish our cocktails. We chose the latter. Less than 3 minutes later a waitress walked up and said nearly rudely your table is ready and you need to follow me. She was equally as abrupt about the phone policy. We were all supportive of it but not being told like we were at school. Our waiter was fine although his instructions were a little confusing. But none of this would have mattered if the steak was excellent and it just wasn’t. The whole fish was delicious but both steaks were a bit grissly and chewy. They just didn’t seem to be a good cut. We finished with an extra drink in the bar - definitely the stand out of the place but sadly not enough to make us return.
A. B.
Completely superb and a no phone policy is just such a treat. People actually talking to each other!! Highly recommended. Be careful of the Manhattah. It's a bit of a hell raiser.
A.
Really great staff and food! Hard to have both these days in Sydney so it was a pleasure. Will definitely be back. Had the steak and sides which were both brilliant. Fit out is gorgeous
A. C.
The Spinalis is the best steak I've ever had! So good that I'm going again ina few weeks with friends as I cannot stop talking about it. Such a great hidden restaurant and the service is impeccable!
I. H.
Little basement steakhouse in the Trust building in Sydney. Book and go early to have a drink at the bar. Bartenders are super cool and helpful. Drinks are just as good. The steaks were really good. I suggest the spinalis. Very juicy cut of meat.
f.
What a great place. Go hungry (and with money) and you’ll have a great time. Expensive, but worth it. We had both Gidley cut and the grilled rib eye, sides (roast potatoes amazing) and some clams, terrine and oysters for entree.
A. T.
Visited Bistecca recently and wanted to give The Gidley a try. Bistecca concentrates on bistecca alla fiorentina where The Gidley has several offerings with a focus on Prime Rib Roast. Unfortunately on this occasion we missed out as they had sold out....
The entrance is off King Street down a set of stairs to a large metal clad door. Press the buzzer and you'll be let in and greeted warming by your host.
First off we were a couple of blow ins with no booking. The host advised kindy they were fully booked, but we were welcome to sit and sample the bar food and of course the drinks. Even though coming in early at 6:30 I was not surprised...
The bar isn't a bar, don't expect a long rosewood piece of furniture dividing you from staff and the "Bartender". Expect to be welcome into a comfortable home, by an welcoming host. The place was packed by the time the first seating had arrived, but at no time did I have to wait to order.
"Volvo" a nickname for one of the tenders is a delight, his knowledge and passion for American bourbon is even greater than my own. In addition he mixes a fantastic old fashioned.
Now don't be afraid to ask for the big boy menu after you peruse the set cocktail menu. Don't be afraid to ask to be surprised with a different kind of poison or cocktail, don't be afraid to go off menu. Honestly nothing is too hard, unless they've run out. For the drinkers reading this, you can get Pappy's here... get in before its all out. Enough said..
The menu isn't grand by any stretch of the imagination but in this case it's quality over quantity. Oysters and clams were freshly dry sucked and spectacular, ask if you can have the oysters with a twist of whiskey.
The underground space didn't feel cramped even though they did pack a fair few tables and chairs. The space features a private dining room and private tasting room which may feature in the future some invite only events.
Before we could sample the whole entree menu, they were able to accommodate myself and my guest to a table. We kept our phones but did not take them out the whole night, given the food, drinks and general experience.
We shared the Rib Eye on the bone and added some sides. The gratin and shaved brussels are standouts as was the steak. Perfectly seasoned with salt, pepper and a twist of lemon. Needless to say we'll be back...
A few minor things, but there is a lack of light in the establishment. It felt under ground, it felt homely but just a tad to dark.
We missed out on the rib eye which is a little disappointing but off course what can you expect being blow ins. We didn't realise the sauces had to be ordered separately until the order arrived, maybe just throw them in or price them in...

My friends and I came here for an end of year celebrations and couldnt of been more pleased. The food is outstanding and the drinks are absolutely fantastic. The atmosphere is and design of the restaurant is the best of best and the service is top notch. Bec, Wax and Jimmy are excellent hosts and really make you feel at home. Thank you for an excellent night

Steak seems cook perfect medium rare but it was very chewy couldn't finish the dish.
Chicken was way too salty... couldn't finish the dish.
I'm not coming back ever here again due to mobile phone "put away" situation. Very uncomfortable about it. These days mobile phone is not just mobile phone it's my bank card my computer it's life for someone. I think you crossed the line in this case.
If you like treated like school kids you may enjoy here.

One of the best steaks on the planet. Amazing quality of meat and services.
Staffs are truly great too. I very much appreciate your hospitality.

Outstanding for steak, service, ambience and value. A must visit for those who love tender and juicy cuts. The ban on mobile phones at the table is a real bonus in my view.

I’ve been here twice already and looking forward to a third time for my birthday next week - I can’t keep away! The food, the vibe, the drinks, the service is just all class and you’ll walk away talking about this place for the next week.
The highlights: the martini, the burger, the spinalis, the oysters.... actually I take it back, everything is a highlight, order it all!!

A hidden gem! Beautiful and charming decor. Everyone was very friendly, and greeted us on the way in and out. Thank you to our host Alex who made for a lovely experience and was very knowledgeable and accomodating to my pregnancy. Im usually one to take photos of my food, but happy to accomodate the no phone policy as friends and family will just have to go to The Gidley to see what they're missing out on!
Came here on our anniversary, and were treated to complimentary drinks. I loved that they served fresh warm bagels to start with a selection of spreads. Definitely a first for us! The burger and fries we had for entree to share, was so delicious. All the ingredients truly complimented each other, without over-powering. Not too greasy, just full-bodied. For mains, we had the mac and cheese, spinalis and brussel sprouts. Best mac and cheese i've ever had! You can smell the truffle, but it wasn't over-powering in flavour, that you won't get sick of it. The brussel sprouts complimented the other dishes nicely with a little acidity and sweetness. The spinalis was cooked perfectly and was so tender. We were so full, but couldnt resist ending on the pecan pie. Not too sweet, and the buttermilk icecream was the perfect pairing. The filling in the pie was my favourite!
All in all, everything was amazing and i would happily order it all again. Excited to come back and try the other things on the menu.
J. R.
Attention to detail, a warm welcome, and fantastically cooked cuts of steak. All the food is served on sharing plates, the steaks are cut for your ease. Considering everyone shares food these days it’s nice to see a place change to adapt. The rib eye steak was perfect, the maple bacon a delicious must have side. Their drinks are well made, the old fashion was mixed perfectly.
Having your phones taken away with a nice touch as it allowed you to appreciate the restaurant ambience and the food without worrying about adding 10 things to your Instagram story.
Be warned it’s difficult to get a reservation so make sure if you want to go, plan ahead.

(Translated) Oyster is hard to taste, but it suits my taste.‼️ Not to mention steaks‼️
But the only thing I was disappointed was that I had to remember the pretty and delicious food in my head... When I sat at the table, the waiter came and rolled up my cell phone ㅠㅠ The waiter was very kind and kind.
The overall atmosphere of the store was relaxed and quiet.
