Comments of The Great North Cafe
D. Y.
Dropped in here with some friends for lunch. It was not too crowded which was good as we sat and dined in the garden.
We ordered the beef burger deal, chicken snitzeal deal and the nasi goreng.
The nasi goreng was tasty and the spice level could be adjusted. It was good and both the wife and myself finished it in no time.
The burger was ok, the pattie was frozen and does not appear to be handmade. But otherwise it was tasty.
The portion of the snitzeal was one of the smallest I've seen. Chips were nothing to shout about as it was the first time the kids never finish them.
M. N.
Had a great experience at this cafe. A group of 10 of us were doing the great north walk and stopped by on our route and the owner was very welcoming and accomodating of our big group. Cheap and affordable and the food tastes great too. Extremely happy with the service!
N.
The Pacific Motorway was a carpark so I flicked over to the Hwy and found the Great North Cafe. Great place for a break. Loved that they were open on a Easter Friday. Well worth getting off the motorway for.
H. N.
Absolutely loved the food, the barrmundi fish was excellent and the gardens were we sat was so lovely. The owners were really kind and friendly. Would definitely recommend going there

Good lunch
If we knew we had to pre-order: it may be different experience as we missed lots of good food

Always a welcome sight once you’ve completed the Great North Walk from Brooklyn or Berowra. Located about 250m north of Cowan station the cafe sells hot & cold drinks, snacks and other basic supplies. Popular with cyclists on weekends as well. Definitely worth dropping in if you’re nearby, they also do Indonesian meals by reservation (although check during current Covid 19 shutdown).

The service was excellent, I had the burger which was good, a friend got the chicken schnitzel which was average more like a big chicken nugget my son had the fish and chips which was also really nice he ate the whole plate, chips where fresh and seasoned well. The location and price you can't argue with. I think if the food quality was take up just a level you'd have a real 5 star spot.

Delicious Beef Rendang and Nasi Goreng! We will be back. Great place to stop on the way up the coast.
P. W.
Normally I would visit another place up the road when riding, but as we were driving we decided to try The Great North Cafe, and it was a wonderful surprise. An eclectic mix of middle eastern, Asian and Australian food, as well as a very homey atmosphere makes this place a great stop.
A. F.
A friend and I passed through on our 5th day of our GNW through hike. Perfect stop for a good feed and to stock up on some supplies. Really friendly owner.
J. S.
A wonderful cafe providing remarkably delicious Indonesian food. Located in the perfect spot to service hikers on the Great North Walk, motorcyclists and cyclists enjoying the bends and hills of the old Pacific Highway and those heading down to the water i would recommend this establishment to all. If you do get a chance to eat here i hope you order the delicious Indonesian food, though they do make wonderful western style meals their homemade Indonesian food is without question the highlight. They offer generous portion size and seem to have a genuine passion for your enjoyment and happiness. This cafe is a diamond in the ruff in an area which usually has lacklustre food offerings.
M. R.
Awesome, good options. The mocha was amazing, and everybody loves hot chips. Big support for the little guys. Best wishes and success.
A. G.
Lovely place, we had a tasty grilled chicken which is a mix of some spices.
S. N.
He saved our legs when travelling the Great North Walk. Great advice for hikers, great food and service. 10/10 would go there again. He kept the store open for extra time as we came back from our walk for the day and served us great fast food. Also gave us the idea of camping at a local park when we were about to hike.
Take advice from him

A gem - fantastic Indonesian food. Beef Rendang with slow cooked beef and fresh aromatic spices - with a trip!
M. A.
Cool place to chill on Pacific Highway. Great service. They have free Wi-Fi as well.
T. W.
Great service and awesome breakfast, very friendly staff.
L.
What a wonderful little gem of a place! Great coffee and beautiful backyard area to enjoy some peaceful bliss. Highly highly recommend this Cafe! Service was extremely friendly too.
L. R.
The food was pretty good. The service was not so good. The attitude of some of the staff was appalling to the extent that they were reluctant to provide extra paper serviettes when requested for. It ruined the entire experience of the food.
Edit: The waiter (she) was quite friendly there and paper serviettes were included in the meal. But my comment was in response to the treatment I received at the front by someone else.
C. S.
A secret and hidden gem. Great bacon and egg rolls for brekkie. A regular for motorcyclists
C. S.
Quirky little place. Oddball mix of hikers, cyclists and motor bike riders seem to make up the customers. Good spot to fuel up before tackling the Great North Walk
G. M.
Beautiful food (especially the Indonesian dishes), great coffee and lovely people.
J. C.
Fantastic Indonesian food in a remote village on Pacific Hwy, complete with a very well stocked general store? Must be kidding? No. Please just stop by there at this establishment. I have been inviting my very Dutch wife to this place for lunch over 2-3 occasions and she is still happy, notwithstanding all the Rijsttafel's she had had back in Holland. Did I also mention the great coffee and the garden where local music bands play on weekends? You can just walk up to there by foot, you can pull over in a big truck with a trailer; there will always be room for you (I've tried both and appreciated it either time.)
M. T.
Excellent stop when doing the great north walk, or when in the Cowan area. The coffee is really good, they have all-day breakfast menu and nice lunch options. I tried an Indonesian dish - beef rendang - and it was gorgeous. The place is beautiful, there's a lovely garden at the back and the staff is really nice and friendly. Would definitely visit again.
B. E.
Awesome, good options for a nice meal, I had the vege burger, my wife had the chicken wrap.. was amazing, next time I will try the Indonesian cuisine as it smelled awesome. Loving the local food.

Took my parents out for a casual lunch on Friday. The Great North Cafe is a diamond in the rough, cheap and cheerful, very friendly service and great food. The Beef Randang and Jasmine rice was very flavourful and lots of authentic spices. The whole marinated butterfly chicken was succulent. Might try one of their burgers next time, they looked very good.
B. M.
Fantastic food, coffee and service. Went to The Great North Cafe with the entire family for Father's Day lunch and we all thoroughly enjoyed our meals and dessert. The service was super friendly and the prices are very affordable!
They definitely make you 'feel at home' and we all loved the low key, relaxed feel.
B. M.
Located about 200m north of Cowan train station it is about the only place locally to get a coffee and a meal. Service is friendly and an extensive menu with something for everyone.
Chai was good, the meal just ok. Nothing wrong but not exciting at all.
J. P.
Quirky roadside diner. Very good food, service was a bit slow
j. g.
The marinated fish we had was a taste sensation. Home cooked genuine Indonesian flavours, cooked and served by the delightful Kas and his partner.. A lovely relaxed lunch interlude with my friend. Good tea and banana bread too. Thanks for providing a quality cafe in Cowan.
M. O.
True hidden gem for Indonesian food in the north. It’s about 1 hour’s drive from Sydney. Perfect lunch stop if you travel on the way from Sydney to Central Coast For Ikan Bakar lovers, you have to pre-order early before your meal to allow for the full flavors to be absorbed in the cooking. They use pomfret which has lesser small bones and is a wonderful combination for a smoky and spicy flavor. Great price too for whole fish - $26! The nasi goreng, satay and bee hoon goreng makes a well rounded meal! Our favorite lunch spot on our travels back/forth north.
D. S.
Thank you, we had a lovely lunch today. Owner and staff very friendly, atmosphere pleasant, plenty of variety with dishes to cater to all. We tried the authentic dishes and loved them. Coffee at the end of the meal was great too.
N. B.
We stopped here for a much needed second breakfast on our thru-hike of the GNW. The staff were lovely, the food was good, and the menu was fairly priced. Highly recommended stopping in to support this local gem.
J. R.
I am so happy to find a great place to eat at Cowan especially the Indonesian food. Ikan Pepes and Ikan Bakar are my favourites! A good friend who lives close by recommended this place and I have been loving it since then. Have also brought some friends over who love the food. Must try!
M. S.
Delicious food, friendly staff, good prices.
We had a big group (10) and I guess they don't have a big kitchen as food came out in dribs and drabs, but we also got the dining room to ourselves, so can't complain.
G. K.
Kaz and the staff are great. Compared to what this place was like 18+ months ago, its really made Cowan a top spot not just for locals, but also for people going on day trips and passing through Cowan. They have really done up the grounds, the kitchen and made it into a place that people want to visit. Good work guys.
D. P.
Saw this place on Google Maps heading south on the M1 as we needed to stop for lunch, took the old highway at Mooney Mooney Bridge & stopped in. I had a nasi goreng & hubby had a spiced half chicken, kids had nuggets & chips. Everything was delicious & so much better than stopping at the usual fast food. Proper homemade food, friendly owners & plenty of indoor & outdoor seating (they also bought something out for our dog to eat!). Will definitely stop in again & would recommend if you are in the area.
M. G.
I love dropping in for some breakky. The coffee and food are always fresh and most enjoyable. Service is friendly. Loads of seating and a great part of the world to just unwind for a while. Highly recommend.
A. J.
We have thoroughly enjoyed our visits to The Great North Cafe. The owner Kaz and all the staff are personable, more than helpful and customer focussed.Have sampled the frappes, fresh juices, their signature gelato, banana bread and, of course, coffee. All delicious and served with wit and a great sense humour which is appreciated after a hefty climb out of the bush. Would love to try their take away menu so will look forward to a special trip without the hard yakka.
Z. S.
I'm always looking out for a great new place to dine. The Great North Cafe is now on my list of favourites for delicious Indonesian food and lovely service, which makes the experience even better. All smiles giving my recommendation !
P. G.
He save our legs and the food and amazing

M. A.
Best big breakfast you will have in Sydney and at a great price! If youre going for a hike, or driving by stop and fuel up. Will definitely be back!
S. L.
Great little cafe for this walking the Great North Walk. Recommend the felaffel wrap, schnitzel, great coffee too. If you have room, I recommend dessert too. Casual. Reasonably priced and plenty of seating. Fabulous and friendly service.
D. b.
Wonderful Cafe, with the friendliest staff! They do the best falafel wraps, (which I treat myself to almost daily) 10/10 would recommend even if it is just for a friendly chat and a good coffee.
H. A.
This was a great evening out with our friends, Staff were very friendly and happy to make us all feel welcome. Food was good and portions plenty. The prices were reasonable, will definitely go there again.
S. H.
We have been here twice now. The first time for coffee and we were enchanted by the barefoot monk in yellow who visits and greets like minded souls. The second to tast test the indonesian fare. It was lovely, homemade and good value. Byo ok. Ambience relaxed and hosts friendly. If you give them a ring or if there is a group they will stay open for you. Worth a try (and easy parking😄)
M. G.
Very happy with the friendly service, good food and very fair prices. I can definitely recommend the beef rendang 👌 I would visit again and very keen to try the Ikan Bakar and the chicken also looked great.
T. H.
Food was good. So too the coffee. Very friendly service and food was out quickly
a. c.
The beef rangdang was amazing. Gem in the middle of almost nowhere
O. 4. S.
Came across this little gem by accident. Enjoyed the banter with the owner, and wow what a great Nasi goreng followed by a superb coffee. As an interstate visitor we are so pleased we visited here.
W. M.
We had a great breakfast there. Brilliant service! Food great and coffee better on our way to the Central Coast along the Pacific Hwy.
S. B.
