Comments of Sonoma Braddon
K. C.
Eating here is a must. The neopolitan pizza was out of this world, probably my favourite thing here. The ham and cheese baguette was really fresh and had great textures. We loved the signature breakfast bun, it was satisfying tearing it apart. The food brews were just ok, I'll probably get hot coffees when we next return.
J. L.
Very clean, elegant bakery and cafe.
Highly recommended but it's also likely to be busy as they are very popular with locals.
The roast is smooth not particularly strong, the food is definitely fresh and well made.
Staff are friendly and professional.
Great for breakfast or brunch with family, partner or colleges.
D. L.
Sonoma is definitely a staple bakery of Canberra. Their pastries, especially the almond and original croissants are delicious, crispy and chewy! They had well thought out arrangements in place due to covid which was great to see. Will definitely visit again!
J. P.
Great picturesque atmosphere. The Coffee is delicious and the bread is spectacular perfect in every way. The outside seating is nice and has a cosy vibe, inside seating can get about loud but it’s nicely air conditioned.
T. H.
Popular bakery with tasty sweet treats and more.
There was a long queue when we arrived on a Sunday morning. My friend living in the area told me it is typical of this place.
We got in line, and thankfully it moved quite quickly. Once we were in store, we saw a great looking range of sourdoughs, pastries, sandwiches and other sweet baked goods.
We tried macadamia financiers, Portuguese egg tarts, and chocolate croissants. Financiers were exceptionally good. Portuguese tarts were much less sweet than expected, which we also liked a lot. I felt chocolate croissant lacked chocolate - but the croissant part was fantastic and it didn’t really need chocolate to cover its flavours.
G. L.
A high quality bakery producing many bread staples as well a wide variety of pastries and ready-to-eat snacks. Prices are on the higher side but the quality is good and consistent. Coffee is also consistently good. Be prepared to queue on busy weekend mornings with the rest of Braddon.
c. 2.
The baked goods are seriously divine!! I love their smaller portion sizes as well which means I can order one of everything. Coffee is great, service prompt, tables tiny and few. The bread is delicious though. Worth a trip and slight discomfort if you can't find a seat.
G.
The sourdough loaves are excellent. The croissants are excellent. The coffee is nice. The staff do a good job. Everything is expensive, but it's all good stuff. The queues are very long .... veeery long.
S. R.
Sour dough that will put almost all to shame. Just try their morning bun and almond croissant, not overly sweet and pairs well with big cup of flat white and a touch of honey
C. K.
Best almond crosssaint and sourdough. Have special pastry and bread for Easter, Christmas and Australia day and must try those specials!!
S. Y.
Fantastic bakery with plenty of fresh sourdough, pastries and morning delights. A big hit, and with social distancing in place, only takeaway options at this time. Chocolate chip cookies were yum, as was the almond croissant and apricot Danish. Everything is great!
I. K.
Delicious No Cross Buns and variety of delicious treats from vegetarian to no veg and pastries and almond croissant and delicious coffee, it’s quiet busy on times and expect ques on weekends but if you scan CBR code than order on line and they will let you know when your order is ready...good customer service and ample sitting inside and outside in beautiful weather..Chocolate buns are delicious and full of taste and freshness
S. S. (.
Probably the only bakery in the civic area.... I think (hopefully some other popular local bakeries open in the civic area for productive compeition!)
Busy and popular. If you want a loaf of bread, don't get there late 😉
R. T. (.
I’ve tried Breads, baguette 🥖, sandwiches, croissants 🥐 and the granola bowl along with danishes, pastries. Loved them all
Tastes fabulous, and the staff are friendly and helpful.
A. N.
Definitely one of the better coffee places in Canberra. But the highlight was the fantastic sultana Danish. The pastry was amazing and tasty. I could have gone back for another one.
The staff were friendly and also very efficient in clearing the table of empty plates and cups.
A. G.
The best croissants in town and good value to. The bread ain't cheap but I love the sourdoughs. Coffee seems to sell like hotcakes.
N. A.
Delicious pastries and great coffee 10/10
And if I can’t visit the bakery I get the sourdough from woolies, so good!
F. K.
Got the Eggplant Ricotta Baguette and Ratatouille pie! Bread as usual is fantastic, but sandwich was a little bland. On the upside the pie was very hearty, cosy and flavourful, hard to do for a vego pie! No room for dessert but the pastries look amazing and the Spiced Apple Cake sold out (good sign!)
M. P.
Sonoma. Well - I'd heard a lot about this place. A few of my friends frequent it and say great things about their bread, pasteries, breakfast food and sandwhiches.
I waa close by and hadn't had any breakfast - so I snuck in for a quick bite.
The place was certainly busy. Very busy. You order your food at the counter and then take a seat.
Now this is a super clever bit on their part. While you're ordering, you stand in front of a bevy of baked goodness. Fresh breads, fluffy croissants, scrolls, their specialty- the morning bun and a host of others. They look so good and smell even better.
I managed to resist though. I went for the breakky roll. It was so tasty, eggs bacon and a hint of chilli jam. It went nicely with my tatsy piccolo.
As i wnt to leave - I couldn't help my self and grabbed a few of the baked treats. I'll have a sample a little later and add my thoughts then.
A. D.
Excellent coffee. Great service. Best almond croissant and the morning bun is to die for.
H. G.
Excellent bread and bread products. A wide range of prepared products makes a great lunch easy to plan.
H. K.
I had croissant and smoked salmon on toast. Both were pretty good. Recommend as breakfast at beautiful Canberra city.
S. Z.
Shop is very tidy and cozy. I had two tarts with coffee, it was so nice!
f.
Amazing bread, my favourite is the olive sourdough. Strong coffee, the way I like it. Service is pretty good.
I was pleasantly surprised by the pizzas. The quality of the dough was fantastic, and the carefully portioned ingredients tasted fresh. Not a bad rendition of the Italian original at all.
D. D.
Perfection. Great coffee, wonderful selection of snacks. Prepare for a ling line though.
f.
I have to say the very best bread in Canberra, and I've tried a few bakeries. Friendly multicultural staff, Fela Kuti up loud and and meaningful coffee to wash a fine pastry down. Marble tops and cushiony bottoms, ovens on view, be early as it is always crowded. You cannot be disappointed.
R. B.
The food is amazing. The service is very bad. Always a huge line they need more staff.
C. G.
Lovely bakery, great croissants and coffee 😍
D.
All of them are so amazing! I love this almond bread and brownieeee sooo crispy and good
M. S.
Wandering around we found this cute little bakery full of people.
We could see why...
A local working at another Cafe buys his coffee and Pastries at Sonoma
Coffee was good, pastry delicious light and yum yum yum
Highly recommended
S.
Excellent sourdough and yummy pastries (the Portuguese tart is my favourite!). Unfortunately, the service leaves a lot to be desired. Staff are frequently hurried, unfriendly and snappy to customers. I hope they can improve upon their customer service because all other aspects of the business are excellent.
S. T.
The caprese baguette is honestly the best sandwich I've ever eaten! I have been disappointed a few times when it hasn't been available, but I've recently realised you can order it online and they make it for you! Absolute game changer, I just order it online as I'm leaving home and it's ready when I get there. The staff are always super friendly, and I like to see what different pastries they have, my boyfriend loves the brownie!
A. L.
Fantastic baguette. We bought eggplant baguette which blow me away, the cruch n chewy n creamy, yummmmm. Beef n ham baguettes also great. So yum didn't have time to take a photo. Will definitely go back!
M. B.
Spectacular breads, almond croissants, sweet and savoury pastries. Second only to you-know-where in Kingston ;) So many glutens, so little time... must look up Sonoma’s Sydney locations now.
S.
Good coffee.
Bakery 🥯 and sandwiches 🥪 so delicious
N. M.
Their breads, pastries, pies, light meals, based on their excellent sourdough recipe, are the reason that we keep going there. They are friendly and attentive but it is for you to buy what they have prepared and not an ala carte choice. Great coffee and in/out seating. Be prepared to wait, especially on the weekend, but it flows quickly. And Braddon is the place to be seen in Canberra these days. We like it and we keep buying their stuff. And note that this is not a cheap bakery.
N. K.
Very nice coffee. The staff were also very nice and polite.
C. T.
Coffee used to be really good. But on a busy weekend - high chance of receiving burnt coffee - like I did for a soy latte..
On a side note, they used to offer if i you need to heat up the pastry to go but not any more. You have to voice out your request so for that to happen!
N. S.
Great bread. Their burger buns are my favourite - and I've tested many. I miss pinsas from the old days - they don't seem to have as big a range as they used to, but that's COVID times, really.
P. M.
If you can afford it, the quality of baked goods here really does reflect the price, but it's just not reasonable to use this as a source of staple bread.
M. G.
Awesome French bakery for lunch or fresh bread.. I love their pies. But warning don't turn up past 3pm as they are popular and usually sold out by then!
S.
The food is beautiful, plenty of choices to cater for every taste bud. The coffee can sometimes be hit and miss. The prices are what you'd expect from a cafe in Braddon but the staff are always friendly. A great place to grab a quick brekky or mid-arvo snack.
I. l.
Great coffee and service. Variety of bread and pastries.
K. Y.
Very busy small bakery with many sweet and savoury options to choose from. Must buy a miche loaf to take home. The pizza/focaccia things are always delicious and spongy. So glad they opened a store in Canberra!
J. M. Y. L.
Awesome selection and quality. Aslo keeping social distance rule
M. S.
Very fresh and tasty pastries, excellent bread. There is a bit to wait and hard to get a table, but otherwise everything else is great.
J. B.
It was abit over priced for the food you get. The ham sandwich wasn't anything great. Wanted to try a pie but their oven wasn't working.
B.
The staff are so lovely and friendly. Very professional. The food is good - the bread are solid and tasty. Sometimes the pastries can get a bit dry as they're open to the air and the door is near them but if you get your pastries in the morning, they're quite good. the coffee was nice as well
B. W.
Lovely little place for a taste of Sonoma's quality produce, where you can see them make what you are eating. Good coffee and well priced tasty treats.
A. A.
They have a filter / batch brew coffee that is acceptable. Good atmosphere for people watching alone, or 1-on-1 short meetings and catch-ups.
Pro-tip: you're not limited to the bakery food, they have a nice menu. The Mushroom Croque and Chicken Waldorf are favourites of mine.
z. a.
Lack of variety; ordinary taste of the food items we tried; seating uncomfortable.
A. L.
Coffee was excellent. Prices are on the higher end of the scale so it will only be a rare treat. Beef empanadas had a nice flavour and a very flaky pastry, sausage roll also great flavour but too strong for the kids. Store front is very stylish but not enough thought put into how much that door will be put to use as it isn't really big enough for a lot of customers to stick around and eat.
L. N.
The best bread ever made. Excellent pastries and coffee. Love the sandwiches and salads! Excellent coffee and friendly and efficient staff.
I. N.
amazing food! and great service :) they do really yummy coffee and the staff are all really fast, friendly and helpful! loved it
C. K.
Plenty of cafes in Canberra can do really good coffee, but few can do them consistently across multiple visits. Sonoma is one such place. I'd also highly recommend the blueberry and lemon scone (Myrtle?) if you get there early enough to snag one.
s. m.
I went the other day for the first time. The items in the store to eat for breakfast or lunch, are rather common and over-priced. However, the sourdough (I bought a huge loaf of "mission sourdough") was the best I've ever tasted! I'm a sourdough fanatic and that bread was out of this world good! Loved it and will totally be back. I won't be able to afford to buy it regularly, but it will be a great treat from time to time!
L. R.
A must go for coffee and light breakfast, brunch, lunch - oh why not anytime! Very impressed by this gorgeous find. Service great, coffee on point, and bakery treats and sweets were a great start to the day. First time to Canberra and we are always big on finding best cafe finds so we were very happy to find this place. Put it on your list. We went 3 times...! It’s not cheap but that’s what you expect from a specialty bakery. Just enjoy it!
L. o.
Love the food style and atmosphere at Sonoma 1st class baking lush food and Coffee at its best in Canberra in my opinion they Bake the best bread in Australia instant Fav for a foodie stop! Try the bread and butter pudding for some old school decadence!
C. G.
Food was excellent. Skip the queue function could use improvement.
A. B.
Best bread in Braddon. Service can be slow with a long line out the door on weekends, so it’s a good ideas to get in early before they sell out. Well worth the wait though! A delicious but limited menu is also available.
A. w.
Good food but why such uncomfortable stools? I know it wasn't just me as half the people were all piled on the bench rather than use the stool.
L. H.
A place for great bread, pastries, treats, savoury lunch items and coffee. Although a little bit dear, best for treats. Good for a catch up brunch/coffee with seating inside or outside. I like the modern minimalist decor. At popular times it is full of people but never uncomfortably busy, usually a line to order though. Testiment to their delicious food. Photo of almond crossaint, great as a shared item between two with coffee.
R. L.
Great for a good breakfast. A big pot of porridge too. Yummy croissants. Extensive range of sourdough bread.
r. j.
Loved the morning coffee and toast we had this morning at Sonoma. Staff were so pleasant and asked the relevant questions, for example, did I want my toast with a cheese, tomato, mushroom and delicious spices heated. Staff behind the counter know their menu and product, a big plus in a cafe which does not provide table service. The coffees, brought to the table, were excellent. An offer of table water could have been made earlier, but it was cold so top marks for that. We loved the food, the savoury noted above, and the generous fig and ricotta toast. The outdoor area looks attractive and seating is comfortable. We'll be back.
R. J.
Loving this trendy new bakery in town. Bread is delish, and staff are friendly.
V. T.
Always a lot of pastries, pies, bread & rolls etc on offer - favourite is the cultured butter croissant. There’s also a dine in menu to select from. Coffee can be a little hit & miss (Sonoma appears to be one of the only cafes in Canberra to offer maca milk). Staff and service is friendly.
Note; the seating plan can be tricky for groups, due to the small table sizes.
M. V. R.
Delicious breakfast options, love the smell of bread that is made fresh here. Regularly visit this place for coffee, but end up buying some delicious treats along with a latte. Highly recommend this place.
E. G.
Amazing bread, delicious pastries and mini pizzas, and solid coffee. Great for a breakfast treat and the Miche is the best bread I've had in Canberra.
M. L.
Very popular bakery in Braddon but worth the wait. Great selection of pastries and sourdough bread sliced to order. Coffee is not bad if you are queuing for the bread.
S.
the best cafe in Canberra. ❤️
A. M.
Lovely bread and pastry, efficient online orders.
V. V.
Coffee here is close to the best i had in the city. Their croissants are the best. Only reason they are missing the final star is because i do not get my coffee extra hot inspite of saying it multiple times.
J. R.
The best bakery in Canberra hands down!
R. S.
Excellent pastries. I bought a mix of pastries for a work morning tea and my colleagues were impressed. Not too sweet and the pastry is buttery and flaky. I found the staff professional and efficient.
R. P.
Excellent but expensive coffee. $4.50 for double ristretto picolo latte (called a Magic) and for that no table service and fetch your own water. Didn't eat anything but food looked great and better value than coffee. Needs a better service ethos.
C. Z.
Barbies Dream Cafe? Definitely not to scale.
We love the food and the origins of Sonoma are special to us. Coffee is also good and the staff are on point. My only thought is the furniture. It's not relaxing. Infact its horrible, the tables barely fit 2 coffees and 1 plate of food. I'd suggest in investing a little more in the space, especially if you want groups to come and share in some tasty treats.
G.
Expensive for what you get and not a lot of options. A small cafe tucked away in the middle of Lonsdale St, Sonoma is primarily a bakery and coffee stop. Those with dietary requirements/allergies should approach with caution as they do not cater for them (beyond non-dairy milk). It's pretty popular so the line is often going out the door on weekends. However, there are far better places in Braddon to get your morning fix from.
S. C.
Great coffee, and even better pastries.
A. S.
I have been there a few times for coffee and pastries. Really nice. The store is well managed with the employees having excellent customer service.
O. H.
Great coffee, bread, baked goods, cakes and service to match. Definitely a place to stop in.
J. L.
I take my family here all the time. Great coffee and great pastries!!
K. L.
Yummy! As always! croissant are yummy!
A. P.
I must admit one of my favourite bakery's in town. The staff are good although there's a few who are not as lively as others but all in all despite being expensive, we have made it a regular spot to frequent.
J. W.
Always a treat, Sonoma is Braddon excellence - a single specialty done to a degree above the rest.
Walking in, you’re first shown an enticing array of freshly made pastries, breads and pies, all made on premises and gloriously devoid of the sad uniformity that sits in other pastry cabinets of coffee shops.
Get a croque monsieur, spread the mustard (provided on the side, so thoughtful) inside and have the best sandwich experience of your life.
Sonoma is also clearly paying attention to their coffee - while not anything to rave about, it’s consistently fresh and well brewed on clean equipment.
A well earned 5 stars.
P. T.
They sleep with One eye open 😉. Greatest coffee shop on Lonsdale Street and beyond. Great service, great food and awesome coffee! Go team!
C. Z.
Great bread and sandwiches, good pies too. Beautiful properly pressed juice. The Sonoma miche is our favourite
L. S.
Victim of own success. Long lines of customers and lack of sufficient seating has become a serious issue for this excellent bakery. Its quality product needs to be duplicated elsewhere
K. M.
Amazing coffee and bakery. Had to wait a bit this morning but definitely worth the wait. Love it will go again
R.
Wow! 'The Worker' sandwich is a masterpiece and the pastries and bread all look delicious! Coffee is great too!
C. C.
Lovely bread of various types, made fresh on site. Varieties of sandwiches, slices, pastries etc..eith coffee and other drinks available. Service fast, efficient and friendly.
L. L.
The sourdough bread was amazing! Though my chai tasted like warm milk
A. O.
Delicious sourdough and bakery treats but coffee needs more punch. And, as someone else has noted, staff could work on being less aloof.
N. R.
I had a coffee today and had a nice chat with barista. I think he is the best.
T. B.
I grew up in Northern California and Sonoma's sourdough bread reminds me of home. Their pastries and coffee are top notch as well.
H. A.
Amazing deluxe pastries and sourdough breads, highly recommend!
T. S.
Great bacon and egg rolls and really good coffee!
K. A. R.
I am a tea person, so I ordered peppermint tea (also because I was recovering from a sore throat). The tea was so good. The aroma coming from the tea, that cleared my nose right up.
S. C.
Good coffee, Excellent croissants and pastries. Bread with flavour.
B. H.
Go to place for the Mrs and I for Friday morning pre-work breakfast. Despite the rant of the person below, the service here is actually incredible. We've gone half a dozen times and not once have encountered a rude employee.
C. J.
The food is consistently fresh and delicious, and the staff are always patient and helpful. (Could benefit from some larger tables to fit your things on though.)
A. F.
Top quality breads, great to have Sonoma here in Canberra. Wish they could stay opened for a bit longer (closing at 4pm).
E. P.
Excellent authentic San Francisco sourdough! Great coffees. Very nice choce for breakfast/brunch!
S. M.
Really good bread and pastries. Coffee wasn't quite as good as you can get elsewhere, but not too bad. Good service.
E. T.
Fantastic almond croissant with great texture and not too much amaretto. Burnt end bagguete just as good as it looked.
A. W.
Great coffee and a lovely almond croissant
M. K.
Baked pastry, particularly an almond croissant is something! Moreover, Belgian hot chocolate which is not sweet, just chocolaty is just perfect!
C. L.
Really nice bakery, the bread is excellent, the baguettes are 'french quality', and the staff is lovely. Definitely a place to visit in Braddon!
A. B.
Food is excellent and the croissants are as close to perfection as I've had in canberra
Coffee is very slow. Be prepared for a wait.
P. K.
Beautiful bread. Wonderful sandwiches and pies. Some of the best croissants in town.
D. N.
Great coffee and "The Worker" toasted sandwich is awesome, service is quick but tables are small and seating area is awkward- space is not well utilized.
A. H.
Love this place!! They have ready made pastries you can just grab and go. Also coffee and drinks.
J. A.

The staff are friendly and service us excellent.
B. P.
Great range of breads but I recommend coffee and an almond croissant here. You will not be disappointed!
S. S.
Yum coffee, croissants, sourdoughs, morning buns and more. Always consistently good.
T. B.
Brilliant bread. There are other bakeries that make some good bread but Sonoma bake the best tasting bread around by far
M. c.
Best croissants outside of Paris and honestly probably better than most of the places there
R. M.
The sourdough here is some of the best you'll find in Canberra. Some of the other things are $$$$.
Coffee is good.
B. H.
Excellent service, quality food and very popular with the locals. Will definitely be back.
D. L.
Good food, good atmosphere and good coffee. A bit pricey and staff can be friendlier. I would go back again.
