Comments of The Flute Bakery
P. L.
Tasty croissants, good coffee and friendly service.
Cakes and tarts are beautifully designed and tasty. Though I would prefer the tarts didn't have dried sultanas in the base (hence the 4 star instead of 5). There is a wide range to chose from. They can also be easily ordered on the phone and you can ask to receive a confirmation via text message.
Nice outdoor area to catch up with friends. Enjoy coming here when I’m in this side of town.
Car park available along the street.
F. N.
Great selection of pastries and cakes. Really love their sandwiches as well but you have to wait for them to come out at 11am. The pies are quite excellent. One of the best bakeries in Canberra.
S.
Fantastic patisserie with delectable cakes, pastries and hot food. Some cakes require ordering with a minimum of a few days notice. Friendly and helpful staff. You'll be amazed, delighted and your taste buds will be tantalised.
N. J. D. S.
Ordered a pistachio cake over the phone. Had to leave a voice mail with my order details and I was a bit worried if the order will be ready the next day. The order was ready on time and it was a really good cake. Loved it!
Update 2018: Flute now ACCEPTS credit card payments.
Update Nov 2020: Covid safe measures followed at the bakery. Flute encourages card payments for payments above $10. You still can't go wrong with the any of the pastries or cakes.
Flute also uses biodegradable cutlery and plates for dine in customers. ☺️

Christmas fruit mince tarts ✔️
(Wish it was Christmas everyday!)

Walked in randomly to quickly realise this place is dangerous! Lots of very tasty cakes, all the food and bread looks great. Prompt and efficient service.
M. K.
Coffee is not too bad but not recommend.
However cake and almond croissant were very delicious !!! Very yammi! Specifically almond croissant is best!!
M. P.
Delicious, everything is delicious, so you need to be careful and arrive in a good hour, so you can find variety to decide. Some minutes after we arrived, all sandwiches were gone! The cakea are amazing, not just to the stomach, they are the cutest! Totally recommend
I. K.
Delicious pastries and great cakes.
I recommend this place if you need birthday cakes and great pastries.
The smell of butter is strong in this shop and if you like that, you know you're in a great bakery shop.
I. S.
I have a mixed feeling about The Flute: arguably they produce the best cakes and pastries in Canberra, now they even have an eftpos machine. The atmosphere is great and I love catching up with my friends there. I am just not sure I can justify paying $9 for a small piece of cake. This is up from $7.50 I used to pay just a couple of years ago. On the other hands side large cakes remain reasonably priced. The patisserie still does not have a bathroom.
L. M.
Glad that Flute are still here after Coronavirus. Nice basic food and drinks, friendly people, relaxed eatery. Ready for more customer buzz.
d. g.
First timer but will totally be back for more! Plenty of smaller cakes to choose from, people in line were scared they might miss out on one of the bigger cakes. :) Super friendly staff, a lady I think is an owner or manager? but she was so patient with my dad and explained about the cake and just went that extra mile! Very impressed and my cake was delicious - I'm a chocoholic.
Was a very odd and rude young lady in line who abused the staff..... - but apart from that negative experience I am going to visit again before I head back to Melbourne and I am taking a cake home with me!!
C.
Loved their cakes! 😋
G. F.
Definitely a top shelf Patisserie, we haven't found anything better than it in Melbourne
M. G.
Coming from London I was shocked to find this gorgeous little cafe bakery in Fyshwick of all places. Absolutely fantastic cakes, friendly happy service and a nice laid back place. Had to go back numerous times and my all time favourites are the jaffa dome and the lemon meringue was yummy. Parking is ok - just park across the road at The Good GUys massive car park across the street just be careful for yobbos speeding when you cross the road! never had a bad cake here, yet to try the pies but the chocolate brioche is also mmmmmmmm. A+++++ customer service considering how busy they get. Already ordered a Christmas cake for my return to OZ
I. H.
A small and pleasant French styled bakery tucked away in Fyshwick ACT. Serves both take away and eat at table. Good breads, good coffee and excellent small cakes. Also serves a range of meat pies.
R. S.
I ordered two cakes: orange and almond flourless cake and a caramel and macadamia gateaux. Both exceeded my already high expectations and were devoured by colleagues at work and friends at home. Parking was a breeze and service was efficient and professional.
T. M.
Bought a bed and wine quiche for lunch. Tasty, but a little more most would have been nice
c. 2.
Where can you find pastry that is better than this? The pie fillings are mediocre, but try the quiches. Superb! The sweets of course are fabulous.
B. M.
The coffee was really good and very friendly service, the only problem was that there were too many tasty looking cakes to choose from!!
Glad they have EFTPOS now. Customer was rude and abusive today because of $10 minimum EFTPOS, was only removed from there when she became aggressive and abusive. Felt so sorry for the staff, even other Customers had to tell her to calm down. Me and my family were VERY happy when she was asked to leave.
Now back to the cakes - highly recommend the Jaffa Dome! My wife and I shared the pistachio cake - decided to share it, regret that now as I wanted it all :)
Apart from a very rude Customer there today I was proud of how the barista and staff handled it and after 8 years of their service I'm happy to go back again and again
L. T.
We recently went in search of a delicious whole cake for a birthday celebration in Canberra, it was a Monday. Everywhere we went, shops said no. This bakery not only had amazing whole cakes for sale, the price and variety was excellent. We opted for a pistachio cake and every element was perfect! We will drive back from Goulburn for these cakes, thankyou Flute ❤
e.
Good setting with a nice outside area. Yum tarts & cakes!
L. C.
Beautiful cakes. Can’t go past the almond and orange cake!
T. R.
This is one of my favourite bakeries ever. It has the most delicious pies with flaky golden pastry and well thought out combinations of flavours. Their cakes and other sweet pastries are also magnificent and I make a point of stopping by here when in Canberra to pick up some of their fabulous sour dough bread.
Also really nice coffee ^_^
C. Z.
The best French patisserie in Canberra. The cakes, bread and pies are simply the best in Canberra. Of course they don’t need any advertisements because they always sell out everything made for the day! Coffee probably not on the same level but that’s very forgettable comparing to how good the food is.
L. S.
My partner and I grabbed some amazing desserts here for her birthday. Mind blown. Absolutely delicious and so delicately presented. Be quick though, they sell out fast!
s. p.
Nice quality pies with interesting flavours. Not knock your socks off but still really tasty. Worth the visit if you like a quality pie. They also have a range of fancy bakery items that are a little over my head. If you like quality, this is a great place to visit.
T. H.
A bit of a line up but is totally worth the wait. A regular here and I'm always impressed by the great customer service, great coffee and the pies are divine- and the chicken, bacon and mushroom pie is a nice new treat and love to see they are trying different cakes as well. The cakes are not for the faint hearted - some can be very rich but you can't stop eating. I love the choc mint cake - not overly minty but breaks down the chocolate richness. Keep up the great service and great food
T. F.
Some of the best cakes in the ACT - go to for birthdays and special occasions
B. S.
This place is fantastic. A hidden gem. The chicken pies here are the best. Their pastries are crazy good. The cheesecakes are brilliant, if you haven't had been here you definitely need too. Ok so the parking situation is completely garbage, street parking if you can get any at all and the coffee is horrid. But all of that can be over looked for the food. Wow.
R. H.
So delicious I forgot to take a photo before I devoured it ;-(
P. M.
Amazing quality fresh cakes. Coffee was very weak but tasted good. Prices were good for those types of treats, around the $8ea mark. Will have to go back to try more & possibly the pies.
P. M.
Best cakes in Canberra! Excellent bread as well. Shared a large lemon tart yesterday, everyone very much enjoyed it. Popular place for coffee as well. Pity it is not opened on weekends.
P. N.
Chicken flute is fantastic for lunch, wonderful breads and fresh produce on this chicken roll. I love the cakes but try and avoid sugar but can't resist. I have been around Canberra a very long time and this is one place i can not fault - exceptional service and quality products. Highly recommend the croissants and the hot chocolate is to DIE FOR.
b. k.
Delicious food. Always great selection of patisserie goods.
G. P.
Went there three times, few months apart, always noticing inconsistent quality in their products. Danish were really average, which surprised me given I heard good things about this bakery. Once I bought macaroons only to discover, back at home, they were under baked. On a positive side, some of their pastries are really high quality, in presentation, texture and taste, and I do appreciate their effort in willing to step-up from other bakeries. Service is really average: two times on three, no smiles and staff was visibly tired. I'll go back in few months and review again.
S. S.
There's nowhere better to have cakes and pastries in Canberra. The cakes are all exquisitely designed. They not only look good, but taste heavenly as well. They change the selection of cakes almost everyday so there is always something new to look forward to. The pastries are also worth dying for. Light and fluffy, they almost melt in your mouth, especially the croissants.
Well worth a visit despite the location because of the great selection available. Prices are reasonable, but things tend to sell out pretty quickly. Did I also mention that they have macarons, pies and quiches as well? Simply delightful.
L. L.
Long time's love . Been here for many years, still the place for a lazy morning.
H. K.
Everything is divine, the presentation, the flavours and the variety. A must try in Canberra.
S. M.
Not bad food, but I don't feel like it necessarily deserves the praises it continually receives from everyone.
Pretty unbelievable these guys don't have any form of credit or debit facilities either.
I rarely carry cash in case just in case I come across a place that doesn't take card - I just go elsewhere (as does everyone I know).
On the other hand, if a place has nice stuff (and card facilities) I regularly make impulse purchases because it's so easy.
F. B.
Great little bakery with amazing pastries and good coffee. Also has tasty breads and hot pies. Indoor and outdoor seating areas are ok. Often have to park a little bit down the street due to limited parking.
T. M.
Incredible pastries, cakes, breads, pies, sandwiches, macarons and more. The bakers at The Flute are magicians with pastry and the flavour combinations are delicious. Three savoury standouts for me are their parmesan and mushroom quiche, the chicken and leek pie and their fabulous croissants. Every cake is a work of art, that tastes every bit as good as they look. If you haven't tried the delights of The Flute Bakery, get yourself out to Fyshwick, it is totally worth the trip.
H. A.
Ok, so Flute is a "not so secret" place for great pastries. It is definitely worth going to if you want to indulge in delicious unhealthiness that is made to a very high standard.
I've tried many of their offerings, including bread, pies, cakes, and macarons. In short, their food is very good, but if you're looking for the cafe experience, the coffee is considered very good, but the food offerings are quite limited.
As a non-coffee drinker, I feel that I am utterly unqualified to refute the high regard their coffee has earned. However, I believe their hot chocolates could be significantly improved. Their chai lattes are good, but not exceptional. Maybe this is the state of a truly french patisserie? If so, please forgive me.
If you want something delicious to take home. Be prepared to go early. The place is only open on weekdays, from 8am -3pm. So don't expect a well-earned weekend brunch. Also, if you do go on a weekday don't expect to pick anything up after work. Warning: There isn't always much left by 12pm, so visiting early is best... or I'm sure you can pre-order something special if you want to avoid disappointment.
While the prices for cakes can reach $40-50, and individual serving size offerings range from $6-10.. I'm not sure what value point will be suitable to you. However, if you have the spare funds, I highly recommend their profiterole cakes, their fruit flans, and anything that involves jam and cream. Their bread is very good, but I recommend rapid consumption, as it's always best as fresh as possible, and you will pay extra for that quality.
Overall, I think Flute does make some amazing food. However, the opening hours, somewhat out-of-the-way location, and price limit the number of times I can visit. When it is open, I've seen it both utterly packed, and practically deserted, so it's probably best for smaller gatherings unless you make a reservation. (I don't know if that's possible, but many places do offer it when asked).
I hope this review helps!
J.
good cakes but make sure you come in the mornings as they are often sold out by the afternoon.
I. N.
Looks good, tastes fantastic
R. S.
Just the best cakes, this is Raspberry Charlotte. Even better now they take epayment not just cash
J. R.
Love Flute - the cakes and coffee are excellent. One thing I don't like is the very aggressive table service. Being a fairly regular customer its not an isolated incident that the minute I have devoured the last crumb of my almond croissant the plate is whipped away. When I have the last sip of coffee - you guessed it - the cup disappears. Today my napkin got taken before I had even had chance to use it. The bakery was busy with take away customers but there were four empty tables. I have tried to contact management and left a phone message - no email address available.
D. D.
The pies are delicious. Coffee is good. Staff are great.
My partner has sampled many of the cakes and hasn't had a bad one yet. The lemon meringue and Jaffa Dome are the best rated so far.
M. L.
Amazing pastry! Had a Beef and Red Wine Pie, not only was the pastry delicious but the filling was just as good. Mouth watering!
m.
They're heavy handed with sugar, but the flavours, creaminess, and textures are there. It's almost impossible to find high quality pastries that are sweet but not USA-tier sugar-bombs and the flute is definitely in the painfully over-sweet league, so I'm going to be an occasional customer taking these pastries in small doses.
G. F.
Up there with the best cakes in Canberra. Best to order ahead as the bakery is popular and good cakes sell fast. Recommended
R. M.
It is apity that they don't open later into the afternoon or the weekends, but I'd only be getting fatter if that were the case! I'd never leave - their products are all amazing.
I've had the breads, the pastries, the pies, the coffee, the macarons and the cakes. They all stand up as being masterfully created. As good as I've had anywhere in Australia and quite good for what I've had through France too.
J. T.
Always fantastic goods though prices are in line with the quality. Easily one of the top bakeries in Canberra!
R. B.
Excellent pastries. It's hard to accept that The Flute can produce such delicate well balanced cakes in such an industrial district. Staff were friendly, decor is beautiful and I can't stress enough how good the cakes were!!!!
T. K.
I enjoyed their pastry as usual, great products, only everything disappears from the shelves TOO quickly-even at 10.15 in a morning I couldn't buy what I came for 😢 -was sold out! On the other hand, everything always is crispy fresh!
M. P.
The BEST chicken and leek pie ever.
Beautiful sourdough bread.
Awesome looking cakes - lucky I'm not a cake person or I'd live here.
(WAS Cash only though) - has EFTPOS now..
L. H.
You can't beat this place for special occasion cakes and small individual cakes. Just amazing. Not too rich and some lovely flavours. Chocolate mousse and rasberry cake is yum!
They also sell bread, pies and coffee.
L. L.
Yum! This is arguably the best patisserie/bakery in Canberra, certainly for macarons in over a dozen vatieties, and for celebration cakes, which are always exceptionally crafted, multi-layered, beautifully decorated, and most importantly delicious.
The pies here are made with the most decadent, buttery pastry and delicious fillings - currently a hearty lamb, rosemary and shiraz, or a more delicate chicken and leek.
So why 4 stars instead of 5? Sadly, the coffee has never been very good here, which is perhaps to deter people from eating in here in the very small premises; and the opening hours are also antisocial: from 8AM until 3PM on weekdays only.
p.
Flute always has delicious food - the quiches are awesome, I highly recommend the chicken, leek, and tarragon pies, and the macarons have converted several of my friends who done like any other macaron. Worth a visit.
T. W.
Amazing cakes here. Slightly pricey, $7.50 for a tiny piece but it absolutely delicious. It's a pity that they only open on weekdays and shut early. Their pies are fairly average.
N. H.
One of my favourite places in Canberra. High quality cakes and pastries, as well as pies and sandwiches, and now they have EFTPOS. Highly recommend the Almond Croissant.
C. K.
One of the best dessert place in canberra i went there around lunch time but almost gone😢😢 better be early to have more choices.
O. A.
Pretty good cakes but has the worst opening hours. most of the stuff sells out early so what's the point of 1.not making enough to get thru to close. 2 you close at 3(weird) and can't even make enough to get thru to then let alone if you ever dared to open standard working hours.
Z. M.
I bought cake here for a birthday party and it was an absolute delight. I also gave reference to the bakery for people at the party. I love going here for our office party or other occasions. My favorite are the little cakes. Doughnuts with topping...
F. L.
Great coffee and food! Get there early before all the food is gone!
A. B.
Great pastries, great coffee. Very nice staff.
They also do sandwiches after 11am.
Mini quiche, pies, pastries and coffee.... what else do you need!!!
N. E.
Delicious, fresh, tasty cakes. Never dry and just the right amount of sweetness. There is always something different on display. The best bakery in ACT. The pies are also devine.
O. R.
This bakery is nice but nothing special. Definitely not worth the hype. I've bought several petit gateux. Again they were nice but not exceptional.
f. g.
The almond croissants are probably the best in Canberra and the cakes in general are amazing. The salad rolls are very good but you have to be early to get one.
I. P.
Chicken leek pies are nice cakes are better
G. W.
I got over the $10 minimum eftpos when I realised I could get an amazing cake and great coffee for that! Pros: Cake and quality coffee , great people working there. Cons: Someone buys the cake you want when you are behind them in line . LOL
S. N.
The coffee good but beef and wine pie very ordinary.
E. C.
Good service and delicious pastries
m. c.
Delicius hot chocolate and nice place
V. C.
Tried a few things from their cake range and they never disappoint!! Favourite by far is the profiterole tart - it’s not as sweet as you would think so goes down a treat!
K. M.
The first time I had anything from Flute, honestly, I thought I was in cake heaven!!! The Jaffa Torte has to be my favourite though - and everything else I've tried has been amazing ie the berry cheesecake, tiramisu - all amazing!!! So happy to have a bakery of this quality in Canberra - if you're after a very special treat, Flute is the answer ;)
A. B.
Oh my Lord that Pear tart and the Vegie & Fetta quiche are to DIE for. Such flakey, light, buttery pastry. Bit disappointed that everything is served on a paper plate, I think that the food is high-quality enough to deserve proper china.
E. D.
The Flute bakery has a huge variety of cakes and tarts and they are delicious . The customer service is 5 star
G. C.
The best croissants in Canberra, and I have that on the advice of a former Frenchman whose family used to own a patisserie in Paris!
T. M.
Good products and worth the trip. Only open M-F and, for some reason (presumably time travel related) they have yet to embrace EFTPOS or any other modern systems of non-cash payment. Come for the prehistory and stay for the baking.
S.
Delicious bread, cakes, and friendly service. Ordered a cake on a Friday, ready for pick up on Monday. Thank you!
K.
One of the best bakeries that I have ever been to.
T. V. (.
Excellent dessert menu - arguably the best in Canberra. Will definitely be a regular visitor here, and would recommend it to anyone.
J. K.
Coffee a little bitter, pie tasty but could have been hotter, outside eating area is next to a busy noisy road - reasonable, but there are better options nearby....Plumb, ONA coffee.
S. H. (.
Amazing cakes and the coffee is pretty decent. Make sure you have cash though. Only fault is that it isn't open on weekends :(
A. H.
Favourite bakery for cakes, a quick lunch, or a quick treat. Yummmmm!!!! We get all our birthday cakes at Flute, it has become a family tradition.
C. N.
The food is just exquisite and makes it well worth while. The place itself is ok I guess, but certainly nothing to write home about but then it would be unrealistic to expect it to be so considering it is in the heart of Fyshwick.
Overall a place well worth while visiting whenever you have the chance.
A. S.
Pretty good bakery, one of the few good bakeries in Canberra. Can be a bit pricey but you certainly get your money’s worth
S. O.
We got the chocolate mousse cake for hubbys Birthday.... omggg Delish!
I can’t wait to go back and try the rest of their delicious menu!!!
T.
If you are after a cake these are the best, but you either need to pre order or get in very early, because they dont hold much floor stock.
G. S.
Best bread in Canberra, but need to get there early before it runs out. Pies also first class
E. M.
First visit collecting a birthday cake (which was amazing) and had to try out the pies and sweets. Definitely lived up their name!
V. C.
Great pies and pastries. A good variety. Staff could deal with a bit more personality, not the most enthusiastic.
A. K.
Excellent cakes, bread, coffee. But they are closed on weekends so I enjoy this approximately once a year.
S. L.
The quaint Cafe serves fresh pies and French pastries. The macaroons here are good, not too sweet.
M. H.
Great pie. Yum. Nice coffee and friendly service BUT, in this day and age of customer service I find it a bit antiquated not having eftpos facilities. I will dine elsewhere.
L. L.
Above average compared to a Bakery / pie shop, that of course is reflected in the tariff ! No public restroom is a definite downside...
L. B.
Beautiful cakes but I resisted and had a Spinach & Ricotta Quiche with coffee for breakfast and it was magnificent!
J. R.
Excellent products. Just wish customers would make up their minds instead of wasting other people's time hanging on their phones choosing a cake long distance.
O. B.
Incredible cakes, great coffee too, but bit small selection. Finally they have started accepting credit cards!!
A. B.
Great pies and cakes and excellent service from the staff today
H. Y.
fav cafe!
A.
10/10 loved everything.
T. M.
Divine, and always divine. Superb coffee, Parisian-quality patisserie goodies and breads, and gorgeous service. Only wish there was a loo.
B. B.
Love their cakes and pastry. Must check it out
N. B. (.
Amazing looking cakes that taste wonderful. Reasonable prices. Would definetly purchase from there again.
I. G.
Very yummy desserts and pies. The cakes always look great, but perhaps aren't always worth the insane prices.
H. Y.
The balcony area is pleasant. The cake I tried was too sweet
K. L.
The food here is outstanding. Nothing more needs to be said; just come and enjoy it for yourself.
R. R.
Incredible cakes, great coffee too, but bit small selection. Finally they have started accepting credit cards!!

M. D.
Mmmm, yum....... Just......yum! They have Gluten free cakes that really are delectable!
M. A.
This is the best bakery Canberra has. Amazing pies and cakes.
C. W.
Product shines, customer service leaves a lot to be desired, perhaps the owners can spend some money there rather than on their Audi's
A. A.
They never answer the phone!!!! I have called 24 times!!! I believe they have turned the ringer off?????
K. M. A.
Flute offer some of the best cakes in Canberra both in terms of taste and presentation.
T. S.
Very different flavors and designs for a very special person... My spouse love the cake
R. M.
Great service, beautiful cakes and pies

Excellent cakes and bread. Wonderful for that special occasion. Wish it was open on Saturday.
A. S.
Great bakery. Fabulous bread and gateaux. Nice press at lunch, too.
b. D.
Pies were nice not much variety. Hot chocolate was not very nice.

S. C.
Oh my God, the Vanilla slices.. Hmmm soo good.

Wow
Great spot
Hidden away so well you'd think you were back in Vienna
J. K.
Meat pies that actually have meat in them and not just gravy. These were a very pleasant surprise.
A. D.
Canberra's best bakery by a very large margin.

A. A.
Amazing
J. C.
Awesome cakes and pies. A bit pricey but worth it.
K. D.
Most amazing food and great service, will most certainly be back!
T. A.
Food is excellent, too many senior citizens taking up all the tables and bumbling around when ordering
R. I.
Anoyinf its not open on the weekend cause the bakery items are worth it. And not bad coffee
C. H.
Park across the road and get in early for the best pastry in Canberra.

Chicken, leek & tarragon pie. Absolutely delicious, thanks again Flute!

The Flute Bakery is an excellent bakery, the service is very good despite how busy it gets!

Great food but lack of EFTPOS is puzzling in this modern and increasingly cashless society.
A. S.
Small range but excellent quality food and fantastic service.
L. D.
Amazing cakes get in early or they will be gone
