Comments of Bakemono Bakers

I would highly recommend this Cafe. They have a good selection of pastries, the ham and cheese croissant in particular was very delicious and was quite different from others I've had before. Their asam tea was also pretty good, their drinks are served at a hot temperature so do be mindful of that.
S.
Wish I could buy more bread while I could! Wish I live close by! All the wishes shot my hearts. Visited there for seats too, but there wasn't. This is not normally good to me, but it was good as I wanted to try other restaurant too. Loved almond croissant and blueberry Danish, but the best for me was a loaf of bread. Texture of the bread was so great.

Even though I didn’t try any of the baked goods, I found the simple flat white I ordered to be pretty good. The coffee cups have a cool logo that looks like deathly hallows from HP! Drewery lane /place area is nice and shaded and a good nice spot to post up while sipping on the coffee.

Discovered from fellow blogger review and was pleasantly surprised (after we bought a whole heap of Lune croissants). Place is harder to find if it wasn’t for a line we spotted on the side alley of little Lonsdale St, it’s not on main st.
Bakery is small so expect a slight wait if you want to sit down. We got there around 8.30 and wasn’t much wait despite being busy. Some goods were not ready yet but we mainly wanted to try the yuzu pastry which I highly recommend. We bought a plain croissant just too compare with Lune and despite not being as crisp and leavened, they are not far behind. $4.80 compared to $6.20 at Lune & slightly larger in size. Service was very friendly. Will def come back to try others.

We regularly come here and it’s always busy. Everything on the menu is consistently delicious! Crispy croissants. They offer the Korean cream-cheese garlic bread. Really good sweet and savoury options available. We went two days in a row.
Items are known to sell out by 12 so make sure to head in early so you’re not disappointed by the SOLD OUT signs
R.
Great variety of pastries. Thoroughly enjoyed each one of them!
Imo, light and balanced in sweetness and other tastes.
On par (if not better) with the famous Lune
A.
Amazing coffee and all female team! Coffee is consistent and the baked goods are always so tempting. Especially with that display. The feta and spinach pastry is so good!
K.
Great hidden bakery in the cbd serving handcrafted breads and pastries with a Japanese flair like yuzu croissants and shokupan. We had the garlic bread filled with cream cheese. Was totally caught by surprise by the sweetness of the bread but all in all great tasting. They also serve great coffees roasted by little rogue few doors down the alleyway.
L. D.
Delicious baked goods. Coffee was well made and staff are friendly and very accomodating.
The place gets busy so you may have to wait for a table inside but they offer takeaway also.
Definitely coming back to try more of the pastries and waffles!
A. T.
So delicious, I was pleasantly surprised when I tried this for the first time! I had almost everything on the menu (that wasn't sold out!) And especially liked the blueberry custard pastry. The hochija tea was also a favourite for me.

Bakemono has it all - original and tasty breads and pastries, hidden behind a Japanese frontage down a side street in the centre of the city. (The address puts you in the general location, so, look down the alley if you think you're lost, the crowds outside will show you where to go)
Similar to Lune, the treats are all on display in the cabinet, and while you order you can see the bakers hard at work right behind the counter.
There's very little wait, and you can eat in or take away (but tables are very limited).
The signature here is the garlic bread, which we skipped for pastries and we were not disappointed - the Almond and Yuzu Croissant and the Blueberry Danish were both fresh, light and divine.
As an experiment we also tried the Sesame, Honey and Sea Salt Scroll and it was superb.
No coffee this time but a great find, and one we wish we'd made much earlier.
C. N.
A hidden gem. My chiropractor suggested I visited here to taste their goodies! My God everything here was delicious. The queue was long but we didn’t mind
O.
I popped in with my friend in late afternoon around 3.20pm. Most of pastries were sold out unfortunately but which means they must be really good.
We ordered latte, flat white, chocolate croissants and fetta cheese and spinach.
I am quite fussy when it comes to croissants. I had one bite and it was wow. Very crunchy, buttery and thick layouts of pastry! My friend bought another one for me so I tried it next day and it was still great. (Left in fridge in paper bag and warmed it up in microwave)
There is only 2 wooden tables and rest is just seating, it's a small cafe so take away would be the best option.(Only 6 people were able to sit down including us and outside was only 2 people?)
Coffee was good. Customer service was very good, friendly, polite and quick. Price was reasonable. I will come back again and try different flavours of pastries.
T. L.
As soon as we came inside, the smell of freshly baked pastries were dominant. It was really nice to wake up early, walked down the small alley to enter this coffee pastry shop. There are some good selection ranging from croissants, danishes and croffles. The staff are Korean, friendly and welcoming and the pastries were absolutely worth the try! I ordered almond yuzu croissant and spinach & ricotta danish - both were crunch and flaky with well balanced sweet and sourness of flavours. Hojicha latte was a bit on a sweeter side and my friend told me that their coffee is great as well. Very aesthetic coffee shop with warm wood decor and glass windows.
D. C.
I've been here a few Saturdays during lockdown. There is always a line up, but it does move pretty quick.
I don't love all of the flavour combos, but everything I've tried has been to a very high standard and freshly made. My top picks are the plain croffle with maple syrup and icecream, chocolate cookie with cream cheese, blueberry pastry, strawberry pastry. And I still have a few things left to try.
m.
the best hojicha latte i've ever tried in melbourne!! the croffle was a definite favourite too, the texture was super interesting and the matcha + red bean worked really well with it. both croissants were alright but probably not worth the price point in my opinion. i think the blueberry and custard was more well balanced and satisfying.
K. N. (.
We knew Bakemono Bakers special garlic bread bun is perpetually sold out so we hiked to the city early down one of Melbourne’s hidden alleyways to get one. And OMG it was so worth it! Made from the same mix of their fluffy shokupans bread, honey cream cheese and lathered in garlic and butter - and a special mention to the matcha and red bean croffle, made fresh to order - there was no way the visit to Bakemono wasn’t going to be epic! Wake up early kids 😴
H.
Great little bakery close to Melbourne Central. I tried three of their pastries. The pastry was very nice and flaky, and the filling in the blueberry danish was perfect! The almond croissant was excellent, with a perfect citrus flavour from the yuzu. I didn't really like the garlic bread, the cream cheese was much too sweet for my liking, but it had a very generous amount and the actual bread was quite good and had a nice garlic flavour. Overall, I'll be happy to try more from this bakery.
J. D.
Great hidden little Japanese cafe. Friendly staff and great treats and drinks on offer. Come early because they sell out quick and definitely try the croffles!
S. S.
Worth to wake up early to get some fresh croissants! A bit struggle to choice what to have even not much varieties. We like sesame n honey, garlic bread and the almond croissant! We found out can order thru online for next day pick up but some should be seasonal which not listed on website so we still prefer walk in to the shop. Small shop that can feed may be 6 persons for dine in. There also offer coffee!
H.
$4.50 honey salt croissant snail, $10.50 shokupan. Fresh and yummy
A. P.
Delightful pastries at reasonable prices. They're open till 5pm, but in my experience most of the good stuff is sold out by noon, so definitely try to come in early. And if you're in the area also pay a visit to Little Rogue on the other side of the street and treat yourself to a Sakura latte :)
M. P.
The shop is so lovely! Feel like a small Japanese bakery has pop up in MelCBD. Almond croissant is on average but chocolate croffle was great, recommended to have it with Ice cream.
R. P.
I honestly didn’t expect their plain croissant to be so good, the texture is bit crust outside but soft inside with hint of sweetness. It is comparable with Baker Bleu one, if you like theirs you will enjoy this one too.
The almond croissant is quite good too, comes with heaps of almond topping and gravy filling, it is quite sweet but not overly sweet as the Provence Artisan Bakers one, but it is similar type of almond croissant.
Bakemono is hidden in a side street. We almost walk past the shop but lucky we didn’t!
Z.
i really wanted to try one of their famous croiffles but they were sold out when i came, definitely come early if you want to get your hands on one as they are very popular, anytime before 10:30am is probably good.
The cream cheese garlic bread was to die for and i loved their honey sesame seed roll.
100% coming back here again for more!
M. K.
Such a gem in a laneway near Melbourne Central. Their Shokupan is always my go-to choice. It is so soft and not too sweet to eat. It just perfect for any meal choices. This also tried Almond & Yuzu croissant. This shop is super small, and have limited seating. Their hojicha latte also very good too. This little bakery is very convenient with public transport. Plenty of car park nearby.
N. V.
This little nugget is perfect for people looking for fresh pastries and a good coffee.
Mornings are packed but you can get a table inside if you wait a little (there is only 3 tables inside).
I suggest you get a couple pastries to try their variety. Be mindful that they are not able to warm up the ham and cheese croissant because they only have a microwave, so you will have to eat it cold which is a downside. Unless you are cool with having microwaved croissant (not a good idea).
The staff is super friendly, quick and accommodating! Would definitely come back!
W. W.
The honey, seasalt scroll was too sweet, garlic bread was delicious, ricotta & spinach was good but nothing spectacular compare to other places in Melbourne, canele was one of the better ones.
Was gonna takeaway the croffles but they said it's best eating it fresh, will try the almond croissant next time (my friend gave some to us last time, but it wasn't good after two days).
A. H.
Amazing! Amazing! Love the original cronuts with maple syrup and butter! Coffee is good too however everything seems to finish super early so better get their as early as u can before everything is gone!
S. S.
Japanese style bakery. It’s a little hidden, but with the find!
K.
Go early to get the full range. Will have to come back to try other flavours but I generally recommend going for the traditional ones always (plain/almond/chocolate). I had a plain one fresh and another heated up at home later on... Still amazing and held it's taste and form. High quality ingredients indeed!
C.
Hidden cozy bakery cafe 🥰
I wanted to try the apple jam and cream croffle, but It already sold out. So I had chocolate croffle! Super sweet and crispy, love it :)
I will definitely visit again!
J. S.
It was Easter Sunday, and I was roaming around the city trying to find a baker that is open and has Hot Cross Bun, and this little gem was not only open, but had THE BEST Cross Bun I have every had!
It's a bit challenging to find the place, as it's hidden somewhere between Little Lonsdale St & Drewery Lane, but it's so worth looking for it.
I am definitely coming back to try their pastries and coffee :)
H. i.
The brains behind Little Rouge has opened up a bakery, specialising in shokupan, canele and various pastries. The sweet smell of pastries will definitely lure you in and of course, I couldn't resist trying them.
Tetxure wise, the croissant and Danish pastries had the requisite crunch and flakiness to it. Flavours were good, with a rich buttery taste. The shokupan was rather soft and fluffy, good enough for what you can get here in Melbourne.
B. H.
Great pastries at Bakemono Bakers!
Loved the Yuzu and Almond Croissant.
Must try the hojicha latte as well!
M. Z.
We had long black here and ordered an almond croissant and a matcha waffle.
It's really nice to find here during the workday morning, fewer people and full stock of the bakery.
W. H.
A small shop with a lovely and chill atmosphere. The warm and crispy matcha waffle paired perfectly with the cold and sweet anko paste. The coffee was also lovely. Highly recommended big you're looking for a place to rejuvenate and reset in the middle of central Melbourne.
A. H.
Cute, cosy and amazing little cafe. Coffee was absolutely fantastic and the pastries, oh my goodness. They're so good and fresh!
J. Y.
Cute little Japanese bakery hidden behind Swanston Street. This place is amazing, worth waiting in line :)
C. S.
A cute little bakery tucked away on Drewery Lane (although the address says Little Lonsdale). The garlic bread and yuzu croissant are as delicious as they look. Shokupan was soft and fluffy, just the way I remember how toast tasted like in Japan (if you are a sourdough fan, perhaps this is not for you). Given the covid situation, the staffs weren’t exactly chatty, which is understandable.
S. N.
Ordered Strawberry & Custard pastry and Almond & Yuzu croissant for morning tea on Tuesday. Total 14.00 AUD.
The texture of the pastry was brilliant! Very crispy and light. The custard was light and not too sweet. Flavors were well-balanced, but a bit lacking. Recommended if you are looking for something light and scrumptious in the Melbourne CBD area. Expect some queue, and they will run out past a certain times of day (usually around 3pm).
D. N.
The matcha and red bean croffle is definitely an item that I would recommend.
D. H.
Always love Bakemono’s smooth and fluffy Shokupan, and don’t miss its “Chef’s Special” pastry(ies) every weekend!
H. M.
Morning coffee and pastries- always good. Not for keto types but who wants to live that life
N. N.
Pastry is great! Excellent coffee too! My favourite in this shop is Matcha Latte. Matcha flavour is nice and strong 👍🏼
J. L.
We went here before lefting Melb. It was awsome so this place made my memories of Melb nice. But there are only 2-3 table so almost ppl have to take away. If you wanna eat in cafe you have to go early morning. Both of coffee and dessert were great. I love it.
J. L.
Cute little japanese patisserie! Delicious baked goods and coffee, with a minimalistic natural clean look.
A. S.
Stunning coffee! Best in Melbourne. Great service and devine pastries. Too good. Thank you so much Bakemono for making our lives better.
Z. L.
Great variety and the ones I tried are not bad. But not as good as I was expected.
J. T.
Amazingggg Japanese inspired pastries!!
Worth eating in as they heat up the food for you and it just tastes so fresh and delicious!
A. H.
Delicious Korean/Japanese style bakery, shokupan is a must try. Plenty of pastries too. Pricing is a bit high but not a deterrent.
S. M.
They bake the croissants fresh in their shop. Best ham and cheese croissant I’ve had in Melbourne. Layout is a bit different with only bench seating and no tables.
Y. L.
We all love the garlic bread one. The famous blueberry danish is a little bit too sweet, but the blueberry is very fresh and tasty. The Canele is ok and the cheese spinach one is so so. All prices are reasonable
S. S. (. e.
I had the best almond croissant in this place. Amazing bakery.
M.
A new Japanese-inspired bakery right across from its sister venue, Little Rogue. Greeted by caring staff, I was in awe with their serene minimalistic interior.
I grabbed their Matcha & Adzuki Croffle ($7.8), Yuzu Almond Crossiant ($7), Shokupan ($10.30) and they were all delicious in their own ways. Yuzu filling tasted fresh and went suprisingly well with almond crossiant. Added a layer of tangy kick to surpass the conventional expectation. Matcha & Azuki Croffle was a delight. I grew up eating red bean so it was interesting seeing it on top of the matcha glazed croffle - soothing nutty sweetness. Shokupan, a Japanese milk bread, was fluffy and creamy just like the ones I had back in my childhood.
It gives off the same relaxing tranquil vibe like Little Rogue. A perfect spot to lay low away from your busy life . Or a place you can visit with your partner to spend a lazy afternoon together. Truly an oasis in the city.

Lovely atmosphere and the service was quick. Pastries look delicious will be trying next time I visit, especially would like to try the almond croissant. Same owners as little rogue so the coffee is excellent.
W. T.
I tried a matcha croffle and hojicha latte.
Must try a matcha croffle with ice cream and without red beans.
It disappeared right after i got the croffle.
OMG, I was out of my mind.
How am I supposed to start my diet with deliciousness like this....
The best!!!
m.
Suggested cold weather remedy - some wonderful pastries delivered to my doorstep by @bakemomo_bakers! My favourites were the mixed berries and ham and cheese ♥️
.
📭Bakemono delivers to postcodes that are 10km from CBD (check their website to see if delivery is possible). Delivery costs $8 and arrived at 12pm for me! Well packaged and croissants looked lovely
.
Review: all the pastries were delicious after it was heated up(I placed the pastries in my Buffalo air fryer for 160 degrees for about 5 minutes).
The mixed berries were delicious partly thanks to the Nutella fillings and pistachio toppings. The yuzu almond was also an interesting twist to a classic. Ham and cheese croissant was yummy too - loved the relish inside. Still prefer it when Little Rogue and Shambles make the ham and cheese jaffle though - piping hot croissant and melting cheese is an unbeatable combination!
D.
Excellent hot chocolate and croissants👍
K. B.
Super find tucked away from the main street. Stylish interior. Friendly staff and excellent service. I would also say one of the best coffees I’ve had whilst I’ve been in Australia (not bitter like so many) and the chocolate croissant gives Lune Croissanterie a run for its money! The pastry selection looks beautiful and delicious. Will be back!
A.
Bakemono has some good vibes next to its sister restaurant Little Rogue. Though, when it comes to croissants, it loses out to Agathe and the supreme Lune. Though, it's pretty darn delicious for it's price point.
M. P.
Delicious Japanese style bakery tucked away in a lane-way near QV. The garlic bread was a fantastically sweet snack to go with our coffees. A real Melbourne hidden gem.
B. D.
Been coming here first time they’re open. Great small space, outstanding pastries and top notch coffees. Great hospitality as well
Y. T.
My favorite place for coffee and pastries! Have to get the pastries early otherwise order online in advance.
m. s.
Favourite little bakery in the city. We drop by most days for almond croissant and fantastic coffee.
K. Y.
Lovely and friendly staff. Nice coffee.
Strawberry custard pastry is the best!
Very hard not to come everyday for the Strawberry pastry!!!
L. S.
Always love the interior and of course the croissant! Had a lovely day with my hot chocolate and the popular almond and yuzu croissant. Friend suggested to try the croffles, and definitely will go back for it soon. Friendly service, too! 😊
R.
Lovely place. Yummm pastry. Service is ok.
Small place so can be hard to get a seat when busy.
S. L.
One of my favourite cafes in Melbourne, the staff are awesome, coffee and pastries are top tier and the wait times are short.
I. C. S.
Feels like I can make a quick trip to Japan just by going here. My favourites are the ham and cheese croissant that as a delicious chutney inside, and you can't go past the garlic bread!
I love that I can preorder online so I don't miss out, and pick up a Hojicha latte too.
A. A.
The yuzu in the almond croissant really brings a delicious and pleasant citrus-y twist to the classic pastry
R. S. (.
I tried the canelle and garlic bread. Both of them were Amazing. Especially the garlic bread made me wanting more.
J. M.
Got here right as they were opening to get the garlic bread shokupan - wow! Definitely worth the early wake up. Almond yuzu croissant also worth a mention. Recommend sharing with a friend as the pastries are deliciously rich and indulgent. Lovely service in a great little spot.
D. T.
Very nice japanese vintage vibe, love the pastry and coffee
J.
Bakemono Bakers is one of the hidden gems of Melbourne's CBD. tucked away down an alleyway you could easily miss this place if it weren't for the all the customers hanging around outside the venue. The baked goods are delicious and the coffee is great. There isn't really any sitting space a few tables which is the greatest downside. They are right near another coffee shop which I believe is co owned or a linked venue both places serve excellent coffee. Make sure to stop by and treat yourself.
a.
Great little cafe/bakery tucked in the alleyway off little lonsdale. The baked goods are beautiful and perfectly cooked. They also have matcha, hojicha and coffee. You can sit in or take away. Not many seats but enough for the small crowds to make the most of the atmosphere and enjoy observing the bakers do their thing with tue pastry.
N. C.
My wife and daughter love this place, so I love this place. The staff are amazing and friendly - they all know my daughter by name now! They do go 2-3 times a week though.
Try their cruffles and their garlic cream cheese scroll - pretty amazing pastries. And their hojicha latte!
a. l.
Love the Hojicha Latte! I always go back for the delicious Shokupan bread and the strawberry tart!
D. A.
That was fabulous. I loved the blueberry custard pastry and the canelle and really everything. Such a cute space.
H. J. K.
Matcha croffle with red beans and blueberry danish were so delicious. Coffee was excellent! Very friendly and kind staff as well, would love to visit again with friends :)
H. R.
Yummmmo!!
Get in and try for yaself
Friendly staff too
B. M.
Despite having had waited 20-25 minutes for my matcha waffle due to a technical error in their printing machine, I was fully refunded, given the matcha waffle I had ordered and received an extra pastry alongside the already generous refund. Their customer service was phenomenal and I was super surprised with how they quickly handled the situation. This was on the 19th of December between 11am - 11:30am, so props to the women who were working at that time because I really appreciated the compensation, despite it being a technical error from the receipt printing machine! Would 100% recommend going for their delicious pastries (especially the waffles) and outstanding customer service c:
T. R.
Great coffee and pastry. Highly recommend.
C. Y.
Delicious pastry to start a Sunday morning ! Yummmy
M. N.
Got takeaway croissants from the bakery and really enjoyed it. They are usually quite busy and there is always a que.
Best to go in early as some of their popular items gets sold out really quickly
A. R.
We got the Honey Sesame, Garlic Bread and Apple Cream croffle. They were 10/10 🥰
i. i.
Delicious pastries, love that I can pre order and pick up!
L. I.
Great service, coffee and sweet treats.
Will definitely be back again
T. W.
The coffee is so good!!! and then the pastries are just so fresh and tasty!! I have become a repeat customer!
H. W.
Tiny place - not a lot of seating available but worth the wait for a delicious cup of coffee and scrumptious waffles made in house. Best waffles I’ve ever had that’s for sure.
C. M.
These limited edition Easter hot cross buns are AMAZING
D. L.
A nice little bakery in a lane way at melbourne central. I had the chocolate croffle and tried the seeded hotteok aswell, and both were delicious. I loved the crunchy yet chewiness of the pastry. The toppings were were nicely placed on the croffle. Pricing wise it’s a little on exy side but worth it as a once in a while treat. Will be back as the customer service was great too.
M.
A cafe in a laneway close to Central, serving pastry and other interesting treats.
D. T.
Bakemono’s newest invention: CROFFLES!
want to know what the hype is all about so me and my friends tried the matcha adzuki, chocolate and honey seeded (basically everything except the plain one😂)
the chocolate one is just ordinary but the honey seeded... omg i really love it!! the sweetness just right, the quantity of honey and seeds, they all just compliment each other it tastes amazing🤤
also additional points for the adzuki, never really like red beans but thanks to bakemono i finish it in one go! it’s not too sweet, yet not bland either.
however, we’re having a hard time slicing it. the croffles are crispy, but if only the wooden spoon is much stronger, that would’ve been better.
S. L.
Had a signature almond croissant, totally lived up to its signature! The bread is crunchy and flaky, with the perfect amount of almond paste!! The paste is not too sweet and refreshing with Yuzu, the roasted almond on top adds rich almond flavour. It totally out worths the $6, definitely going back
S. a.
Yummy pastries
L. L.
Friendly staff and nice place. Need to be early to get to buy the best sellers. Only able to order a cup of coffee, a bit weak but overall okay.
이. (.
Best matcha latte in Melb. Breads are also fine.
E. K.
I was the big fan of almond croissant from little rogue. I am very happy they open as bakery. I came here bit late today so except almond and plane croissant everything was sold out. I will try to come earlier next time try everything!
S. R.
Impressive bakery with bold and exciting flavours everything is well balanced
M. v. d. V.
Followed the hype to this cosy little spot. The produce looks picture perfect, but wasn't blown away when I put my teeth in it. I've had better croissants and there wasn't much yuzu flavour.
O. H.
Terrific little bakery with pastry choices that are hard to find in other places. Friendly staff and Little Rogue across the street. What is not to like?
M. Y.
Very good range of pastries.
Indeed.
J. C.
The Almond Croissants filling is very nice but the Croissant itself needs to be fluffier and bit better and the coffee strong sick of buying coffees in Melbourne 3/4 full too a full strength coffee
A. M.
What a wonderful time with friend at Bakemono! The treat made my day!
E. L.
Cute place to have a quick coffee and pastry. Beautiful croissants and danishes; Quick service.
N. N.
I found the service very slow and inefficient. The cheese garlic bread was cold and stale. I would recommend heating it up before serving.
J. L.
Delicious pastries. Good coffee. Neat little spot

Yum! Stumbled across this place going to another nearby cafe.
Cheese and spinach croissant was amazing. Don't bother lining up for Lune croissants, come here.
D. S.
The sesame, honey and salt scroll was very delish.
M. E.
Great addition to Drewery Lane by the same crew from Little Rogue across the street. Pastry with sesame seeds and honey was great, want to try the whole selection.
敖.
Love the canele and Croissant and waffle here. Better come before 1pm or sold out everything u want.
A.
Some of the best bloody coffee I've had, and lovely staff! Would be 5 stars if there was vegan pastry.
