Comments of Monarch Cakes
L.
Best poppy seed cake and gugelhupf I’ve ever had. The poppy seed cake reminds me of how my late grandma used to make it, so it’s incredibly special to me. Please, never change Monarch.
O. K.
These legends probably do the best Gugelhupf. Second close will be the Polish cheesecake, and almost 3 out of 5 times it turns out to be consistent.
But, other than that, we found other desserts / cakes too sweet for our palate.

There's the rest of the cake shops on Acland, then there's the best.
Seriously, the others are tourist traps that use cheap ingredients and fake cream. Monarch is a thing of beauty, I hope it's captured in a time capsule and never dies. There not flashy, new or gimmicky, they are tried and tested classic pastries, recipes over 80 years old. And I'm unable to find anything particularly bad there. The cherry crumble wasn't entirely satisfying, I desired more bite to the cherries, I really wanted more chunks of cherries. But that's personal taste. Outside of that it's as good as these kinds of pastries get.
Chocolate Koohlhoupf and Vanilla Custard are some of my favourites,
The plum slice is also moist and nice.

A Melbourne institution started in the Great depression era. The claim to fame is it's 100 year old Polish Cheesecake recipe. Although I must say, they have changed the recipe slightly from back 20yrs ago. It's no longer taste that cheesy because the clever use of lemons to musk it, and perhaps less sugary. They still do sell this cake by the weight it seems. You are definitely getting what you paid for!
F.
We enjoyed some of their cakes, my favorite was the custard cake.
We had a small talk with the owner too .. very nice staff and customer service.
P. A.
Delicious Cakes on offer, tried Hazelnut and white chocolate cake 🍰 with some almond Swirls, both were gluten free and rich in flavors. Friendly staff and quick customer service.
D. P.
Monarch Cake Shop is one of the, if not the originally owned and operated cake shop in Acland st. There is so many different types of cakes to choose from from full size cakes to cake slices. They cater for wheat egg and dairy free products in cakes however unfortunately don't carry lactose-free milk if you want to have coffee or tea with milk. (For Lactose intolerant people) There option is soy milk or almond milk only. Staff same friendly and helpful prices are similar to other cake shops however quality we believe he's better than monarchs paint shop than artists
J. T.
Wow just shared the Polish cheesecake with my colleagues was so beautiful! We have also had the Kooglhphf and that was amazing! A big shout out to Peter Barbuto who is the pastry chef there - what a mighty good job you do to make others happy!! thank you so much!
A.
If you feel like stepping back into time with lots of history and some decent cakes - this is the place. You'd get more appreciative to history.
V. D.
The interior is very old-fashioned but they do have a fine selection of northern and central European cakes. It's my first option for cakes whenever I am in the neighbourhood.
S. J.
Monarch have the best tasting European cakes you can get anywhere. Even my grandparents used to go to Acland Street to get cakes from them and the quality and taste of their cakes has remained unchanged over the many years since then.
The staff have always been very friendly and the service is great.
Our whole family still loves their great selection and it's well worth dropping in if you're in the area or making the trip to get a delicious treat.
M. Y.
The institute for cake on the southside, Monarch's been around for aeons!!
Splendid selection and friendly staff.
However, the competition's heating up with pop ups like Black Star Pastry and Beatrix this ain't.

Monarch Cakes has been baking from the same recipes for over 80 years. Many of the recipes originated from the original shop in Poland and were brought to Australia and have been used here ever since. Absolutely delicious cakes, tarts and coffee. Lovely and welcoming staff. Definitely recommended.
R. I. E.
Lovely atmosphere and very friendly staff. The mocha was good, with the coffee itself very well-brewed, however the milk steaming let it down and it was fairly watery with minimal crema. The caramel slice was also well-made, with the downside of the chocolate top being compound chocolate instead of the high-quality chocolate I expected from such a highly rated cake shop. Definitely not a bad experience and worth the price I paid, but there's certainly room for improvement.
P. 9.
Today I had kooglhoupf(mini koogle). I must say My lovely husband brought me to another fabulous place for a dessert treat. Absolutely amazing cake, undoubtedly the best cake on Acland Street. Other cakes are good but not as this much. THERE IS A HUGE ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT IN CUSTOMER SERVICE. But overall experience was good...
D.
This might not be the fanciest looking cake shop, but everything we tried was fantastic. I’m still thinking about that French vanilla cream slice. So good.
S. R.
One of the first dessert shops on Acland Street and still one of the best. Great old time feel with family made cakes. You will love the experience.
M. F.
This is an ‘old skool’ cake and walking in is like stepping back in time. There’s a great selection of cakes and coffees to choose from and cakes are served on vintage plates. It’s located on the famous strip of Acland St in St Kilda so near the shops and beach.
A. A.
Gorgeous tiny european cake shop. One of the oldest in Melbourne and has been at its current location for over 70 years! The Polish Cheese cake and Poppyseed Delight were exceptional. Poppyseed is an acquired taste but was nutty and interesting. The owner is very sweet and worth chatting to!
Next time I’ll be trying their famous Plum Slice!
B. P.
Monarch Cakes, so good they named a lane after it. This is old Acland Street, the glory days, when it was full of the most amazing cakes shops; Monarch holds true to that sentiment. Enjoy the coffee and the must try Kugel. Love it!
S. P.
I used to know the grandson of the store owner yrs ago and their plain cheese cake is as good as the first time i ever tried it.
If your in the area definately get the whole cake its worth itp
D. D.
One of the best cake shops I have been to. I wish that they had a shop like this on the Sunshine Coast. Unfortunately we only found this shop a few weeks before I was transferred from Melbourne so we did not have long to enjoy their spectacular cakes, I guess in one way I was fortunate that we were moving as I probably would have been in a permanent sugar comma. If they are still the same, give them a go.
D. N.
Loved the coffee, adored the three desserts I had here. The cannoli, the 100yr old recipe Polish cheesecake, and the kougelhopf (spelling?) I love the feeling of sitting in a cozy place where it’s cold outside and you have a nice coffee and cake in front of you. I didn’t have to go anywhere else for that, because you don’t mess with perfect ❤️ Also the cakes were not sickly sweet, but flavorful and has that European charm ❤️ Will come here again if I’m ever in the St Kilda area.
J. H.
I dont know how traditional european cakes taste like
.. but i am bought in on the cakes done here looks rustic and tasted quite "old school" I ordered the traditional polish cake tasted very musky(love the flavours) definately would be helpful if the staff were to give me more information on my choices.
K. M.
Are you looking for the greatest bakery with the most friendly and helpful staff ever? Congratulations, you've found it! I was callling from New Zealand to organise cupcakes for my friends birthday and Nikki couldn't have been more wonderful. Who ever said there was trans-Tasman rivalry? No way! Nikki couldn't have been anymore helpful or lovely - in fact, it was like talking to a long-lost friend! Apparently the cupcakes were divine and I cannot recommend this wonderful place enough. Thank you so much again :)
a. T.
what happens to all the cakes at the end of the day, where do they go? no where, I bet. all the ones in the window you see today- those were all there yesterday, probably the day before even, more accurately all year, but honestly I'd say they've been there forever, they're just models surely.. or like , they were real but then sprayed with "that stuff" before they went off, you know the stuff, it's like lamination for 3d objects.
A. S. H.
Went to St Kilda for the first time in many years, great to see the iconic cake shops are still there in the new modern vibe of Acland Street. Definitely worth a visit and purchasing some lovely cakes.
J. C.
Amazing service and delicious coffee, cakes and pastries. Definitely recommend visiting
B. G.
Delicious cakes to take away. Chocolate kooglhoupf die for. 👌👌
d. w.
this is the best of the best cake shops and the best pastry chef is peter he make outstanding cake and is a great guy ...
R. S.
A great old fashioned shop, they even still use mechanical scales. Luckily, they accept cards. The kugelhopf is the star of the show, it tastes as good as it is fun to say! It would be a 5, but I was disappointed by the cheesecake, which was a bit dry.
P. p.
Went to St. Kilda in Melbourne and tried some of the pastries. I had a cherry crumble, 100 year old recipe cheesecake, kogelhopf cake, and poppy slice. All of them were fantastic, especially the famous kogelhopf that Monarch is known for. Monarch is the best patisserie in St. Kilda.
T. B.
A nice place with a cool design.
The cakes were really good, and the service very pleasant.
P. K.
Cake was OK-good. Service rather less OK.
Pretty plain service and no prices displayed which seems to be a sales catch. When ordering and then getting asked to pay 20$ for two small cakes and a small coffee seems to be overpriced but they are already on the plates so you do not ask questions.
P. H.
loved the krugel cake, it was served warm :) the viennese chocolate cake is fab too.
K. P.
Fantastic Breads & sweets in wide range, always makes me buy more every time i visit them, very kind people 👌🏻
T. M.
Met the love of my life here. Don’t remember what I ordered but since then, she orders - me mostly, and I couldn't be happier.
J. J. L.
Cakes do not get more old school than these. You will be spoilt for choices.
K. D.
The best Polish cakes in Acland Street and the whole area.
Many other cake shops along the strip have been bought out quite some time ago, but not so Monarch.
The quality of Monarch's cakes is very good, with no preservatives.
It seems to me the quality of some of the other cake shops is not so good as preservatives seem to be used, and indeed quite noticeable to me after 30mins or so. Just looking at some of these other cakes in shop windows is quite unappealing, especially when I know a bit more about how they're made.
Monarch is the only cake shop I visit and buy from these days. Sadly they're selection is less than it used to be, but to me quality is still very good.
A. A.
The baby kugel and hazelnut white chocolate and orange cake were pretty good but a little too sweet in my opinion (and that's coming from someone with a sweet tooth), so it might be best to split between people even if the slices aren't that big
C. S.
Perfect cakes and cozy atmosphere. I tried to make a photo but i had already eaten half ok the cheesecake that was one of the best!
C. H.
So much history and authenticity to this place Including authentic European cakes (and great coffee). We come here every time we go to the beach. Also excellent choice for people like my husband who is coeliac. Normally at least 2-3 items he can eat.
S. F.
A divine slice of Melbourne's cake history. The best kugelhoph (and many other favourites) in town and great coffee.
V. D.
Very nice cheese cake & white chocolate. As they advertise, over 100 years old polish recipes are well preserved & well made.
The place has a prime location at St Kilda & is managed by friendly, efficient staff. The apple crumble is one of the best that I've tasted. I'd certainly recommend you to have a nice latte as well.
P. C.
Delicious desserts. Order Baby kugel & Hot chocolate. Worth a try if you visit St. Kilda esplanade.
U. A.
The cheesecake was very good! It tastes like German cheesecake. It's not super sweet what we really liked, because everything is so super sweet in Australia. On top we asked it's vegetarian as well, they don't add gelatine from any animal in there.
R. l.
The staff we're super friendly and It is a great Bakery. The 100 year old polish cheesecake was beautiful, smooth and extremely delicious. Monarch bakery is a real gem and a place I would love to visit again.
H.
Amazing vanilla custard cake and 100 year old recipe cheese cake! Best shop on the lane
Z.
Staff are friendly, the shop has 1930s ambience. I highly reccommend the lemon tarts and the cheese cakes. The display case always looks scrumptious and I LOVE the old fashioned cash register. The whole experience is gorgeous complete with books, magazines and newspapers to read from the shelves. SOME of the cakes are a little disappointing though, and the prices are high.
M. B. M.
Oh God, what would I do without their kugelhopf, flourless chocolate cake, cheese cake???
N. T. B.
Make no mistake and come to this cake shop instead of any others at Acland St. All cakes are awesome but my absolute favourite is the plum cake (warmed up), closely followed by the kugelhopf and perhaps the cherry crumble. Great coffee too and friendly staff. Love this place.
T. M.
Good but...Great coffee, lovely cake, great rustic atmosphere, nice staff, BUT got bad stomach pains about an hour after coffee and cheese cake. Are the cakes being left unrefrigerated too long? I can't say for sure it was the cake, but someone should check.
S. K.
Everything we have had so far has been sensational. The Baby Kugel was deceptively rich - I really couldn't have imagined it would be so delicious. The Sacher-Torte was equally delicious and even more decadent. And the passionfruit tart was just divine.
A. C.
My fave coffee shop in St Kilda. Brimming with tradition, atmosphere and history, it is no frills; just great coffee and wonderful cakes. My faves are continental cheesecake, vanilla cream slices that are so light they seem to float, and , of course, the famous Kugelhoff.
A. S.
There are a few ways to bring back memories of my childhood. Eating a warmed up mini kugelhof cake tops the list. The molten chocolate, gooey cake and crystallised sugar combine to bring tears to my eyes. Diet be damned!
c. m.
Great coffee. Fantastic cakes.
E. G.
An authentic, vintage place to chill and have desserts!
The prices are quite alright. Coffee and desserts were enjoyable and the atmosphere of the place is somewhat difficult to find!
It’s an old figure in Acland Street and a definitely must-go!
T. L.
Kids loved the ginger breadman cookies
J. C.
The absolutely the amazing Cake shop on the strip as Cameral Slice is just mouth watering if you get the boys working you well get 5 star service as went there last week and the girls were working and they weren't very friendly or helpful as it seem like we were a bother coming in to buy. We now only go when the boys are on as Customer Service is what wins anyone over
L. Y. X.
☺️cutest café i’ve ever been to
F. V.
The cake is really nice just coming to st.kilda is a pain with ridiculous traffic!
J. P. (.
Grew up eating sweets and cake, I enjoy 20 minutes from time to time .Florentine, plum cake, and famous cake gives it a fantastic twist.Average price 5 to 6 dollars a slice.
C. H.
I had a Kooglhoupf with some coffee while enjoying retro music. The shop has books and magazines, some of which are decades old. I was instantly transported to the 1930's. Love the old world charm of the shop.
As I walk in to the shop, excited to try the famous Kooglhoupf, I asked the lady at the counter to help me understand what it's made of and what other traditional food options are worth trying. She blankly pointed to the displayed items. Luckily a gentleman behind the counter noticed my disappointment and helped me with a bit of information.
D. S.
Completely and utterly unmodernised (well, some of the staff might be a bit new) and completely different and wonderful. Step right back into the thirties and forties.
I had a very good warmed baby kugel. Coffee was ordinary but ok.
홍.
Kugel is great and Mocha was also great. Nice staff. Wanna come again
A. H.
A good variety of high quality cakes. I have been here a bunch of times over the last few years, and the only issue is it's popularity with tourists during the holiday season making it hard to get a table.
M. B.
My favorite cake shop. So many delicious and scrumptious cakes to choose from. Haven't been disappointed yet, nor will I be.
G. L.
We got a strawberry cupcake for my daughter and a mini kooglhoupf to share. I wanted both to be so good. But they were fine. Probably wouldn’t order again.
S. H.
Best cafe on Acland st, don’t be fooled by the others with brighter windows!
Kugelhof (not sure of spelling!) is fantastic, we always buy some (chocolate version) to take home too.
J. M.
Everytime I come to Melbourne - I always visit Monarch Cakes! Although there a ton of bakeries in St. Kilda it is my favourite. The bakery hosts places to sit both inside and outside but would recommend sitting inside. It's a bit of a time warp with their decor but it's great! My favourites here are their signature kooglhouph - which is hard on the outside but gooey in the middle.
C. M.
I was referred to Monarch by the lady in the Empower Gift Shop diagonally across the road. I was invited to lunch with friends and wanted to take a special treat which would travel well on the buses!
Shirley was the lady at Monarch who helped me to choose a CHOCOLATE KOOGLHOUPF for the occasion! What a treat!!
We were all delighted by it... fresh and light... yet full of substance and not too sweet!!!
Perfect!
Thankyou Shirley!
Thankyou too... to the delightful lady at Empower. I have a lovely bag of gifts to take home to Queensland for friends. Lovely items... nicely affordable!
Cheers... Chris Mathers. Lowood QLD

A robust selection classic types of European cakes for those with a sweet tooth that dont like it too sweet. Must try staples are the kugelhopf, plum cake, viennese sacher chocolate and the vanilla/custard slices. So good, I guarantee you will lick the fork clean.
R. M.
Traditional cake shop with delicious cakes and good coffee. Loved it.
S. H.
Best ever kooglhoupf, be it chocolate or poppyseed, and their slices of plum cake are to die for. I haven't managed to so far but I bet if you tried any or all of their cakes they would be just as good. I know the custard and french vanilla slices are just as delicious as the cherry crumble and the polish cheese cake. And when I want a large generously flavoured impressive looking but not too sweet cake I go straight for those big kooglhoupfs (sold by the kilo). My only problem is which flavour. So I have solved it to my own satisfaction. Relatives get the chocolate, and friends get the poppy seeds. That way I get generous amounts of both. And when I am feeling particularly in need of comfort, buying a small kooglhoupf to have all to myself (of course over a few days) is a definite pick me up. Ssssoooo goooooood!
H. T.
Amazing cakes and is one of the iconic cake shops that line Acland street and are a throw back to an old school St Kilda feel, against the backdrops of junkies and rough types.
The cake shop is quaint and beautiful inside, with window decorations to get you salivating and delicious treats inside that are worth a visit down to the famous St Kilda cake shop.
ח. מ.
Best coffee ever! And best cupcakes and cakes.. The place exists since 1934 and looks amazing. The owner is super nice:) thank you see you soon!
R. A.
Best cheese cake ever!
L. L.
Great cakes at a good price with solid coffee.
If you're after a place to meet up with a friend without breaking the bank, this place is never a bad option!
B. F.
Thank you thank you thank you
Needed to send one of your famous cakes to a client in the country
Not an issue and the cake got there fresh the next day 400kl away
Thank you Nikki your service is absolutely magnificent.
F. L.
I love this cake shop. I order French vanilla serving with a cup of latte coffee. The combination is so good. The vantage cash machine is so cool.
N. A.
I’m not sure what I love the most. Great coffee, delicious cakes and the eclectic music mix. The three together make for a wonderful experience.
A. P. H.
A magnificent step back in time, great coffee , sensational cakes , great people ! a privilege to spend some time eating, drinking & chatting with the owners in this unique shop.
Can't wait to go back
L.
Kuglehoupf is God-tier - Returned again December 2021 and its just as good.
K. M.
Incredibly good cakes and a really nice atmosphere. Was relatively crowded but the staff did their very best to accommodate all guests as well as they could.
L. M. S.
Such a wonderful history and excellent food handling processes.
H. L.
One of the oldest shops in St Kilda, have had many delicious sweets from this place, however, the furniture may need an update due to some falling apart and exposing screws. Other than that, friendly staff, and a large selection of goodies!
G. S.
I've been visiting for years from Sydney just for the Vanilla Slice. The cake shop has an old feel about it. Hasn't changed in decades. But hope it never does.
C. S.
Absolute friendly service, solid coffee and a lovely cheese cake! Recommended
M.
A well known cake shop in the area for 70 years . Delicious cakes made with traditional recipes from Polish family ! It is a must visit in Melbourne
I. K.
Old-fashioned overpriced place. Liked their plum pie, tasted and felt like at my grandma’s, cosy homemade, but borrrinnng. Kids weren’t impressed.
The place looks messy.
R. L.
The last of the coffee houses in St. Kilda. Where you can solve the world's problems with the strangely enlightened owners and patrons. If you wear Lycra and drink tumeric soy lattes please don't come and spoil my refuge.
P. D.
We came here to meet up with a dear friend. Great cake options and awesome coffee. Everything was really reasonably priced. 10 out of 10
A. M.
Sugary sweet desserts. Apple pie is a must I should suggest. Definitely worth your bucks and time. Great place.
A. H.
the best Polish cheesecake in Melbourne

B. F. W.
The only authentic cake place in the area! Best cakes, great atmosphere and lovely staff!
B. V.
Such a a special and old place. You can see that nothing has been changed both in terms of recipient and decor. The lemon tartlet was yummy!
T. B.
I have been here a few times now and recommend it if you can find a table. All of the cakes are fresh and delicious.
T. M. O. A. 1. T.
Nice cakes and coffees, but extortionate prices....prices continue to rise unabated. Example: $7 for a (2) bite size tarts...$7 for a chocolate eclair....😮
D. M.
Very cool place. Good coffee. Yummy cakes. Great vintage atmosphere. Loved the Elvis playing continuously.
A. T.
Desserts were awesome! Service was good and the waiters were kind and friendly, Highly recommended 💛

(Translated) I'm new and I think you're the owner. I think a young woman is Alba, but she doesn't want to work. It was the first time I noticed Alba in a cafe. The long black was acidic and the cheesecake was soft. If you like hard and strong cheese flavor may be unfortunate .. Once a good place to go. Naturally, "Uh-ah."
