Comments of Penny For Pound Richmond

Be warned, once you try their croissants you'll have to keep coming back! Raspberry almond is amazing, tart and not too sweet. Probably my favourite of the bunch. Also tried the chocolate hazelnut, strawberry cheesecake and plain which are all fantastic in their own ways. Every flavour looks stunning and I'm sure you can't go wrong. Service team are also lovely and very helpful if you are feeling a bit overwhelmed with choice!

The raspberry and lychee cake was so beautiful and delicious and only $8.5 which is cheaper and better than many cakes out there. All the croissants were buttery and lovely. Portuguese tart shell was amazing just the filling a little too sweet for my personal liking but pretty good👌

Penny for Pound
- CRUFFIN $6.5
- PLAIN CROISSANT $4.5 🥐
- ALMOND CROISSANT $6
- CHOCOLATE HAZELNUT CROISSANT $7 🍫
Their pastries utterly deserve a 5 out of 5. First of all, very reasonably priced considering their portion and quality. Secondly, the texture was super flakey and that was one of the most buttery croissants I’ve tasted. Thirdly, the almond croissant had the perfect amount of sweetness. I noticed it had a layer of crumble on top adding that extra buttery crunch to it. Fourthly, the cruffin had a textbook perfect texture. I guess you can judge by the photo. The only downside was not enough custard. Overall, the best patisserie I have tried in Melbourne so far.
P. k.
The absolute best place to get pastries and bread. This place is a slice of heaven.

Always get greeted with a warm smile. Their cakes and pastries are to die for! We visited their new Moorabbin location on the weekend and received the same level of service. You won't be disappointed

Penny for pound is a hole in the wall, side street bakery at the back of Mayday Cafe. It is worth the visit as their small store has a large variety of stunning cakes, breads and treats in both sweet and savoury. Their croissants are amazing and come with plenty you different filling options. The cakes are gift worthy too. They are not cheap but such a treat. Seek then out

Ordered heaps of delicious pastries online from PFP and was not a let down. Highly recommend for anyone who wants to try another bakery. They couldn’t fulfill my whole order but replaced it with another of greater value. The delivery guy explained how the order wasn’t fulfilled and offered to refund even though they replaced it with another. I called them to not bother refunding as their pastries was exceptional. Delivery was on time and amazing customer service. I can’t wait to try out their cakes.

COVID SAFE GUIDELINES - 5/5. They had appropriate floor and wall signage and hand sanitiser. Only two customers allowed in the store at one time so it doesn't feel cramped at all.
Guy at the counter gave great recommendations! Everything looked so pretty. I bought the spinach and ricotta croissant, chocolate hazelnut croissant and passionfruit cruffin. Wowowowowow
A. M.
If you thought the croissants were good (and you'd be right), you must try the sourdough. It beats any local competitor by a country mile.

Such a joy visiting the guys at PFP - The staff are all total legends and the products are second to none. Died for the tangy passionfruit cruffin.. just exquisite - highly recommend
B. R.
This place is next level on pastries. I've ordered a whole range and they have all been spot on delicious. Strawberry cheesecake croissant, cinnamon cruffin, pistachio custard pastry - cant recommend them enough!

Penny For Pound is a tiny bakery behind Mayday, selling the most amazing croissants, doughnuts, cruffins, and mini cakes and tarts. The smell is intoxicating and it is a sight to behold. You definitely have to get in early as the baked goods sell out quick.
The strawberry cheesecake croissant is my all-time favourite here. Soft, flaky pastry, with a creamy cheesecake filling that ooze out with every bite.
Coffee comes courtesy of Mayday, and there’s limited seating. Service is incredibly friendly and welcoming, and I highly recommend a visit here if you haven’t already.

Finally checked out the croissants at Penny For Pound and so glad we did. The Jalapeño Poppers is so so SOOOO GOOD!!! We will be back for this in a heart beat. Price point and taste makes Penny For Pound a stronger contender than Lune ☺️ We tried their caramelised onion with gruyere too which was a bit on the sweeter side.
W. C.
I like their play on flavours like matching Earl Grey with hazelnut. If you feel like to take your tastebuds for an adventure, try their Strawberries and Cream croissant. But their plain croissants are the best—fresh every 30 minutes!
J. D.
The best bakery in all of Melbourne. You will love all the pastry and cakes. You must try it!!!! I give you my word.

A hidden secret in Richmond ☺️
Try their jalapeno poppers! All their croissants are great. It is best to go early to avoid disappointment as they do run out of things very quickly!
A. A.
The strawberry cheesecake croissant is literally what you'd expect: a cheesecake stuffed into a croissant. An absolutely amazing combination that is a must-try. The chocolate hazelnut cruffin is really good too, it has a lovely airy and crunchy texture with a smooth hazelnut filling. Would highly recommend those two.
A. D.
One of the best croissants I’ve had in Melbourne!
What a lovely experience
P. C.
Pretty average patisserie, tried 3 types of croissants and two types of cake but pretty average.
H. 1.
Yummy croissants and great service!! Try the vegemite and cheese! Yummo!
D. D.
Hidden little bakery which makes some of the best croissants you'll ever have!
J. C.
The strawberry cheese cake croissant filling tastes great but the Croissant lacked that crispy flaky feel. Sausage roll too sweet and way to much fennel and the onion and cheese croissants need more cheese to balance the so much onion. I tried a few other things nothing wow other than strawberry cheese cake filling on the croissant
M. S.
Wonderful, friendly and welcoming staff. We tried this place out on Sunday morning. When we arrived they let us know that fresh hot croissants would be ready in one minute if we wanted to wait. However we opted for the sweet croissants. I tried the Strawberry Cheesecake one and Matt tried the banana and caramel flavoured one. They were both amazing and we will definitely be back! There are no seats inside however there were two milk crates outside to sit on as we couldn’t wait until we got home to try them!
A. C.
I was introduced to this little gem on a recent trip to Melbourne. I ordered one of their hazelnut croissants which was honestly the most beautiful & perfect looking croissant I've ever had. I love the fact that you can watch the pastry chefs work their magic just behind the counter! Such a big draw card!
E. B.
Beautiful pastries ! Now open 7 days a week !
G. S.
Had a cruffin at the Moorabbin store. Was super delicious.
E. M.
Thank you so much PP. Absolutely love the crufins. The coffee is also great. Will certainly go back and spread the word.
C. V.
Excellent french pastries and great flavour combo for the croissants. Both savoury and sweet croissants are amazing.
K. S.
So many delicious treats at Penny for Pound, it’s very hard to pinpoint a favourite but if I had to choose I would say the cinnamon scrolls, cinnamon donuts and cruffins are the standouts. Exceptional quality food and the staff are so lovely. I curse the day I found this place as my waistline keeps expanding as I just can’t stay away!

Penny for pound makes so many delicious treats. I recently purchased a red velvet cake for a birthday and it was gorgeous to look at and delicious to eat. The cake was moist, had a great flavour and wasn't too sweet. The staff are also really helpful .
M. G.
Matilda and Ben make the best croissants and cruffins I have ever tasted and believe me I have tasted a lot.......from Paris to LA to NYC. None come close to as delicious as theirs. Off the charts yummy. And they are such a gorgeous young couple. Humble and unassuming. Gentle quiet achievers. Go in and have a taste. You will not be disappointed.

These are honestly one of my favorite croissants. Plain is perfect, but if you're up for it, the selection of donuts, cronuts and other croissants are terrific too. The staff are always welcoming, friendly and helpful.
S. T.
GO HERE! my new favourite dessert ive ever eaten in my whole life comes from this place - the lemon curd cruffin! Really lovely staff, great service, incredibly beautiful products both to look at and taste. best bakery/patisserie in melbourne hand DOWN. they're extraordinary. not to be dramatic but i would die for these desserts. i would.

What a great bakery. My partner recommended this place and when I heard the words croissants I was in like flynn, lol.
The smell of freshly baked goods, the aroma wafting down the street. The customer area is small, and with social distancing you may have to wait to get in, as I’ve heard that you do.
But I walked straight in, and I ordered a plain croissant which was piping hot!! Woo hoo hahaha ... perfect. The croissant was crispy, light, buttery, and it just melted in my mouth!!
This was a heavenly food experience. I’ll definitely be back.
J. T.
Excellent quality and variety of pastries, sweet and savoury Croissanterie.. hidden gem in Richmond.
L. C.
Easily the best pastries in Richmond. The cruffins and croissants are stand outs. Friendly service, always feel so welcomed in this family-run specialist bakery.
Q. M.
I love fig. I love custard. What happens when you combine the two in a shelter of deep fried bread? Magic. I haven't tried any other baked goods from Penny for Pound, but assume they're amazing considering how good their fig donuts are.

I am always in search of the best croissants in Melbourne as I miss the texture and flavour from croissants in France. The external texture on the croissant from Penny for Pound is quite lovely, crispy and flakey, but internally there is something wrong. These croissants lack flavour and sweetness and lightness inside. In fact, these croissants were tough 'ish' inside. I took some photos of a cut croissant and sent it to a French friend. He immediately replied that it looked as if the preparation did not have all butter (possibly a combination of butter and ?) or at least the croissant did not contain quality butter. Maybe the butter used had more water in it. Is this it? I do not know. You may think I am pedantic, but if you put yourself out there as a french patisserie then you should be able to be compared to a french patisserie. Penny for Pound does not come off that well, although these are up with the better croissants in Melbourne. Really, don't you think that Melbourne we can do better than this? We are supposed to be the food capital of Australia. Why are French pastries so difficult for us to reproduce? The Greek and Turkish pastries are reproduced beautifully here. On a positive, the staff here are amazingly helpful and cheerful and the canelé were amazing.
R. C.
We were really looking forward to trying their pastries and I can't help but feel a little disappointed. We opted for the ham & cheese croissant, caramelised onion & gruyere croissant and lemon meringue cruffin. Both savoury croissants were a little bready and severely lacking in flavour. The sweet cruffin on the other hand was amazing and rivals our fav from a well known bakery in Fitzroy (won't mention names). I would give the sweet pastry a 5 start rating but both savoury pastries are only two stars each (hence the 3 star overall rating). All in all a very pretty little bakery with friendly staff. Might visit again but wouldn't go out of my way.
E. C.
Small cutout place, the plain croissant is the star dish. Unfortunately the one star missing is because their chocolate croissant felt a little plain but would still highly recommends any croissant lover to come and indulge in their awesome flaky plain croissant and other interesting renditions

Probably the best pastries I’ve had, lovely people, never disappoints. Couldn’t recommend them higher.
T. D.
What a awesome place as a 1st time visitor I left with a large box full of pastries, everything in that box was absolutely delicious beautiful textures and flavours definitely will visit again
P. H.
This has to be the best fine cake and patisserie anywhere! Beautiful presentation and quality. Such friendly and happy staff. Welcoming and professional. I would recommend this place for a special occasion purchase or just for divine pastries. Glad I found them!
S. B.
Delicious pastries and very friendly staff makes this a great morning spot. Seating is a little limited, but the beautifully presented pastries and coffee are well worth the visit. Will become a regular I think.
D. H.
Wow, high quality pastries with a unique twist, and some fancy individual size gateau. All excellent, sweet offset with the taste tart fruits and nuts. Wishing Penny for Pound a long life, as I will be back for more.
L.
errrrrr.... did someone say Portuguese Tarts?!?!
S. C.
These croissants are stellar. Very highly recommended.
M. C.
They are not making croissants at the moment, you can only order them “to order” for the next day, because most of the team is away...
E. W.
Absolutely delicious. Cruffin, escargot, pain au chocolat and the best Almond croissant made a great little morning tea. Thanks!
