Comments of Proserpina Bakehouse.
K. C.
Every time we come to Sassafras we always buy pastries, treats and coffee from this bakehouse. Today was our third time visiting and the pastries are still so good. We got the Basque cheesecake, spiced chocolate fig tart and baked apricot Philadelphia tart. The Basque cheesecake a little on the salty side but the apricot and chocolate tart are just sweet enough and delicious. There’s lots of other homemade sweets, jams and liquor to try. And the coffee was very good and the hot chocolate was quite creamy. Highly recommend trying this bakehouse!
M. S.
This is my fav place up here in Dandenong hills. In terms of food, quality ingredients, taste, they are by far the best. If you are up this way - you simply have to try something from this shop - you won’t be disappointed. :)
Personally I like their coffee too, however, yes it is true that they only have one cup size, which would be rated as “a small coffee cup” in many other coffee shops. (But this isn’t a problem for me)
Overall I would (and have) highly recommend this place to anyone.
Enjoy 😊
W. T.
Enjoyed the pies, pizzas and sausage for lunch. Coffees were great too. Cafe also sold many other tasty looking sanwiches, pies, cakes, and pastries.
E.
Walked past this bakery and bought one strawberry danish and coffee . The pastry taste so delicious with perfect amount of sweetness .
I’d found the staff lovely, the variety of pastry fabulous and pies seems delicious.
Definitely go back again.
J. W.
By far my fav bakery with delicious patisserie and savoury breakfast roll. Great ambiance with the garden view. Love it and will be back for sure in future.
A. S.
Such a beautiful bakery, space, deli and shop! Set in the middle of a nursery is Proserpine Bakehouse which has this beautiful old world charm and amazing sweets, savouries and breads. Everything is made on site and looks amazing, you will struggle to narrow your selection down from the cakes, pies, breads, pizzas, sandwiches and in house deli of meats, cheeses, wines and more. Coffee here too and the staff and welcoming and happy to direct you to a selection of their treats. Definitely pop in and I promise you won't want to leave empty handed
L. C.
Surprisingly the sandwiches and the pastries here are some of the best I’ve had in Melbourne. The egg and bacon quiche was smooth, eggy but really silky smooth. The sandwich that came with prosciutto was amazing. The gypsy ham avo sandwich was just above average. So definitely recommend the prosciutto.
U. R.
Great spot you can stop by for breakky lunch , lots of variety for everyone
Vegetarian
Vegan options too
Lovely Staff
Tummy is so thankful
Keep up the good work team
D. S.
Great food, well priced and nice setting. However, the lady at the front counter seemed like she wasn't having a good day.
M. D.
This is my go-to lunch spot whenever I'm in the area. Simple, honest, tasty food and reasonably priced. I love that the kitchen is fairly open, so you can watch the magic happen. Have been a few times - my favorites are the vegan galette, salads and the sweet tarts (lemon especially!)
J. B.
Definitely the best in Sassafras. We used to go to Ripe (across the rd) but Proserpina is so much better value for money. My favorite is the lemon cheesecake 🍰
B. C.
Quality produce here. Cycled here and enjoyed the atmosphere. Coffee was 4/5 but food was 5/5. Rate.
M. E.
Beautiful soft bread, prices were on the higher end but as expected as the food was of a very high quality. Friendly staff and nice location surrounded by a nursery. Huge range of both bakery snacks and other goods such as olives and other preserves. Only thing I didn't like were the circle paper lanterns which I thought were ugly.
T. L.
A lovely bakery on Dandenong Ranges. Love their quiches! They also sell a lot of local and artisan products.
b.
Excellent quality crossaints and food! Best bakery I've been to. Excellent customer service. You must stop to visit of you're in the area.
K. S.
One of the best pies I've ever had. Chunky beef pie with carrots. The pastry was so buttery and flaky and the relish that was included was nothing short of incredible. Easily 9/10 👌Busy establishment but the lines were quick and efficient. Must visit if you're in the area.
P. P.
I love this place ... I really do. Everything here is just so right and makes my day. Great hospitality from the owner and waitresses. A wide range of the goodness on display. Local produce i.e. honey, wine, cheese etc. Cool atmosphere. And super reasonable price especially for a tourist place like this. It takes a while on the queue but it’s well worth it. I’m glad that I did not get a table at Miss Marple’s and walked across the road to find this gem. Come check out hem out guys , I highly recommend this lovely bakery. 👍👍👍
S. W.
Everything about this place is what I want in a cafe! Came here just before our 5th Melbourne lockdown and I loved everything about it. What could I want more than a cafe with a nursery, a fully stocked cakes display, and a fancy deli section?
A small touch that I loved was the open kitchen in which I saw (and smelled! ) trays of brownies fresh out of the oven, and the water pouring station with the wooden spoon spouts is adorable. Next time I'm in sassafras I will absolutely be popping in again, and I would recommend for anyone in the area to not miss out on this gem!
M. S.
Amazing bakery, I loved all the freshly baked pastries, highly recommended
v. v.
Prosepina is a real gem in the hills. It’s like stepping in France from sassafras. Their cakes are incredible. They look beautiful and they taste amazing. It is indeed my favourite place to go to on the weekend for a treat or just for a nice coffee.
Thank you 😊
E. 唐. 劭.
Very lovely cafe and they do take the cafe business seriously. The pattiersie products were delicious looking, the grocery goods being sold in the house were good quality and carefully chosen. It's also a very good location in the area and they even take the decoration seriously. Highly recommended to anyone who wants to grab a nice afternoon tea in the area!!!
I. I.
Love everything about this bakery. The ambience, the food, the outdoor setting. Perfect for a summers treat. Coffees are nice and pastries are delicious.
C. L.
Absolutely wonderful. Superb pastries, cakes, sandwiches, pies, pizza, coffee, and a bounty of delicious gift items as well. I went back twice in the same morning because it was so good. There's not a lot of seating, but you can have a picnic in the lovely park near by, which has lovely tables in the shade.
K. L.
A very rustic bakery and their goodies smell divine. Really good pastries and tarts. Coffee with soy or regular milk is good, but I wouldn't recommend their almond milk based coffees. It was the watery kind of almond milk (not the barista type one) and unfortunately I had to throw it out (had it to take away).
M. R.
Oh my goodness…..the best…..BEST…hot chocolate I’ve ever had. Everything else is pretty amazing too. Pies, sandwiches and tarts. It’s such a nice place and run by lovely people. Do yourself a favour.
S. L.
Very good pastries, bread and coffee. Tried the scrambled egg & bacon panino, spinach & cheese quiche and strawberry & peach crumble tart and all were very yummy. Probably due to shortage of staff, the food and coffee were served in takeaway container even for dine in.
M. C.
Amazing bakeshop. Owner and staff are welcoming and very friendly. Great customer service. Great food. We love all the food that we ordered. Will definitely be back.
H. S.
The ONLY place to have your breakfast, brunch, morning coffee in the Sassafras/Olinda area. By which I mean universally acclaimed as the best place in indulge in those repasts. Eclectic selection of ready made and made to order sandwiches and exquisite baked goods. Makeshift outdoor tables to avoid the "Cron" (Omicron).
L.
Their sausage roll and pie was amazing! - would come back for it. Tart and cake was quite good too! Definitely coming back to try others.
Can be crowded and wait in the line to order but usually will find seats.
D. L.
Really just great food and great service. What more can I say.
A bit of a wait, but well worth it. We enjoyed thoroughly.
V. M.
Beautiful place. The coffee here is absolutely top class. Almond croissants were pretty delicious too. Chic looking cafe stocking up fresh and delicious local produce. I would recommend this place.
J.
My wife & I visited Sassafras today and we came here for a bite to eat, I had a roasted ham & cheese sandwich with roasted tomato relish off the board & my wife had the caramelised onion quiche and both were so delicious. The lady taking our order was very friendly. Would come here again.
E. B.
Good tarts & pastries here . Gets really busy on the weekends. Takeaway could be a little bit earlier around 20 mins wait .
A. W.
Why haven't I visited this place sooner? This bakery is top of my list of Sassafras offerings with beautiful artisan bread, breakfast and pastry offerings. Coffee was spot on and friendly service. Care and attention flows from Proserpina. Will be visiting again soon to try out another creation. 😊👌
B.
Lovely gentle atmosphere perfect for locals getting together for a sleepy brunch or coffee. Best almond croissants within 200km 👌
J. a. J.
Cute little bakery with delicious baked goods and simple dishes (sandwiches, quiches, salad, etc). Everything was fresh and seemed pretty healthy. There is indoor and outdoor seating available, altho indoor seating was a bit limited (especially for tables; plenty of bar/stool seating). Free still & sparkling tap water available. This place is perfect for a bite after a rigorous bike ride or hike. Service staff is friendly (like all of Aus that I've encountered). Not open everyday so check the hours before you go!
Ordered the spinach, ricotta and feta pie with a side of daily salad (green bean and a bunch of other veggies in vinaigrette dressing). The pie came with a side of homemade chutney and the serving size was pretty big (for a pie). Even though it was filled with cheese, it didn't feel heavy in the stomach.
My partner ordered the sausage apple roll (made from free-range Victorian Pork) and it was the biggest sausage roll I've seen. Jam packed with quality meat and also served with a side of homemade chutney.
J. B.
Absolutely brilliant bakery, the cakes and pastries they sell as well as the hot drinks are the best in the area by a long way and lovely setting in the nursery, great selection makes Greg's look like the pound bakery. Great stop on a ride around the nongs.
E. T.
Wonderful service, just so unbelievably polite and kind. The woman working the cashier was so, so lovely.
Coffees were great and the pastries were delicious. Such a great place to stop by after exploring Mount Dandenong. It's very popular so I recommend stopping by early.
L. F.
LOVE this place! Loads of seating, family friendly, the service is a treat, there's plenty of drinks, cakes and other savoury baked goodies to satisfy your hunger. The Tessa spiced orange cake with Syrian figs is particularly good.
There's also plenty of goods to purchase as soon as you walk in from pasta to sauces to jams to chocolates and more. We've bought a number of friends gifts from here as well as a few treats to take home.
We've made this place our 'Sassafras regular'.
M. H.
Great bakery, bread, sausage rolls, sandwiches etc. Everything is takeaway but there is some outdoor seating on site to sit and eat..
E. N.
Food (quiche, beef pie, almond croissant etc) was good but service could be improved. Lady taking our order was very distracted and aloof. Perhaps she isn't use to serving queues. Plus point, lovely play area for kids in the front!
N. S.
Love this place. The food is delicious. Loads of veg options, divine lemon pastries... lovely staff.
Y. S. L.
The interior is nice and cosy while the food did not disappoint. Outdoor area at the front of the cafe is especially suitable for children to hang out. Nice spacious toilets and lots of dogs here as well.
J. W.
The lemon tart is lovely and a must have but the sausage roll is just on another level! Yumm.
L. Y. X.
not a busy morning here, has the Egg and bacon Tart and the scramble egg sandwiches
nice little shop with all the groceries, look pretty cool
R. H.
Loved the atmosphere, absolutely delicious pastries and egg sandwiches, nice coffee
T. T. D.
Beautiful garden settings for outdoors sitting, classy atmosphere inside. A great selection of cakes and savory dishes. Amazing coffees.
S. M.
Amazing selection of sweet and savoury things and a great outdoors setting (very limited space indoors).
A. A.
After cycling up 1:20, we always stop here. Today the staff were very friendly and the vibe was a bit Xmas jazzy. Had a good chat about making sourdough with the main man and enjoyed a particularly fine coffee and Mazziotta, coffee name Elvis! Thank you very much 🎼
J. F.
Great place to stop after a morning ride. The cakes are delicious, and the coffee is good. I love the rustic country bakehouse feel...
W. C.
Friendly service, delicious baked goods and they have Dolfin chocolates! ‘Shame the drinks were weak.
T. a. S. C.
By far my favourite place for coffee, cakes, tarts and pantry goods!
K. B.
We drove for an hour to visit this bakery and it did not disappoint. The atmosphere was so cosy and inviting. They had a large selection to choose from and it all looked so good I wish I could have eaten all of it. The food and coffee were served fast and was so delicious. We got the cinnamon breakfast bun and the prosciutto pizza. The staff were all so friendly. I highly recommend and will be coming back.
G. E.
Great food, best artisanal pastries and breads i have had in Melbourne. Get there early because it sells out fast.
B. C. (.
The food was absolutely worth the less than welcoming cashier service.
I get that we all have days where work sucks, but seriously they need to have a friendlier cash register operator or at least a back up friendlier one.
Bad stuff out the way, now in to the good stuff!!! OMG. Soooo much good food. I had a "Bluey", and never has a toasted sandwich been so - gourmet.. I forget everything that was in it except a very lovely blue cheese and a jam of some type. The bread was beautiful and made me wish for a slice or three fresh out of the oven and lashings of butter.
I then had a merengue that was amazing. It was neither to sweet or dry. It was the very best merengue base I have ever had, and there have been many. It was topped with a good thickened cream over a lemon? sauce. Then a slice of mango and a piece of crystallised ginger on top. I suspect it will be a long time before I come across something this delightful.
The donut at the end was to much for me. I enjoyed it but was just being a pig. I should have waited to really appreciate it. But next time I won't over order.
I was here with a client who had a chicken cacciatore pie. He said it was very nice but he isn't a fan of spices and he thought this had to much... Honestly it looked very very scrumptious..
J. R.
Their cheesecake is the absolute best. Light and fluffy, the cheesecake was complemented well by the lemon curd. Absolute best thing. Drive 25km just to get this cake.
L. A.
The yummiest local bakery in the Dandenong Ranges! Worth a visit for their beautiful bread and home baked goodies.
S. B.
A great place for a good coffee and amazing desserts. Organic wheat is used in the preparation of the bread which you can buy from the bakery section. Highly recommended.
K. K. W.
Great pies, especially the lamb moussaka pie. One of the few places that provide free sparkling water. Uses fresh & organic ingredients in their products.
b. a.
Always a favourite!
Potato and Pea pie today was delicious
Sausage roll is always a hit!
Z. H.
This place is marvelously unique and I'm grateful its owners keep it running to high standards. Where else you find a bakery that mills their own flour from the highest quality wheat available and stuff their pastry with biodynamically-grown fruit? Add to that passionate stuff (talk to senior ladies) that will happily tell you everything about the origin of ingredients and huge see-through kitchen window at the front that gives a glimpse on all that magic in the making - my 3yo can spend hours watching chiefs forging the dough and forming croissants, tarts, and pies from it. Here are some tips on how to enjoy this place properly: If weather permits, sit outside, near the kitchen window, to watch the art of pasty unfolding before your eyes; Don't look at the printed menu - go for whatever is available on display and let your eyes guide you (hint: it tastes even better than it looks!); The place is quite crowded on weekends so the service can a little slow at times, but if pastry is your thing it's totally worth it. In my eyes, you get very high value for what you are paying for and I'm grateful, again, that it's all readily available and affordable. I hope we become more educated about what we eat so that the demand for such places increases.
A. R.
Always outstanding - sweet or savoury, hot or cold - the food is great. And the coffee too!
R. R.
Great house made pastries and reasonable prices situated in a nice garden . Service was prompt and responsive.
J. A.
Amazing place! One of the best pastries and coffee I’ve ever had in Australia
E. P.
Eclectic decor, unusual charm. Cosy setting and friendly staff. Food menu is unusual so not for someone who wants normal! Excellent quality and worth the visit.
R. H.
Really great coffee and nice deserts and friendly service and open more hours. Get the lemon tart!
t. m.
Delicious Sandwiches.
Not very baby friendly - No change table and only 1 high chair
A. K.
The food here was absolutely fantastic. That alone was worth going for, but the staff; the staff were absolutely amazing. I don't think I have ever encountered staff that worked so hard and were so helpful and friendly. It was an absolute delight to be there. They should be so proud of what they have created in every aspect. I don't live in Melbourne, so I won't get to go there as often as i would like. I'll simply have to enjoy the anticipation. I can't wait to go back there. Huge thank you to the staff. I can't recommend you highly enough.
R. J.
Lovely spot for cyclists in the morning.
Fresh bread and cakes along with lovely coffee.
Open early too however does get busy so a wait should be expected.
K.
This was my first time here, very nice ambience both inside and outside seating available. Tried the bread butter pudding .... Was very nice, will definitely visit again
J. K.
Lovely spot, would love to visit again with sisters/mother:)
C. C.
The bread is really nice, curry duck is wonderful too but disk is a bit small. Services are good, with free sparkling water.
E. R. T.
Delicious breads, sandwiches and tarts. We visited on both of our days away. And the mochas were delicious, using real chocolate (remember to give another stir when you get it to get the gorgeous chocolate off the bottom of the cup, yum!) Going there every time we go to Sass.
R. W.
The best bakery in the Dandenongs.
The food is amazing and the staff are great.
R. R.
Effective queueing system, getting in from one door and exit on another, enjoy my time here
P. C.
Incredible ambiance and timeless pastries. A place that enables reflection over some amazing food.
M. L.
The source of the best bread I have ever had the pleasure of eating.
Proserpina also has a glass display case full of the most amazing baked savoury and sweet treats all baked on-site.
There are also unique pies, sandwiches and pizza slices to choose from. I can not name my favourite as everything I have tried has been sensational.
If you have not been to Prosepina and you love fine bread and baked goods you must plan your trip there immediately! You will be richly rewarded for your effort.
T. F.
We had a wonderful afternoon at this very beautiful cafe bakery. I just absolutely loved their pie and tomato relish. Unluckily they were sold out with there pies so couldn’t get another one but definitely be back soon
Customer service is great and so is the location very beautiful too
T. J.
Just keeps getting better and better. Even in these tough Covid times it's reassuring to find a place where great food and it's attendant rituals are not compromised
Y. B.
Delicious cakes and good coffee. Perfect for a Sunday arvo in the hills...
L. F.
Absolutely phenomenal, I can't say how amazing this place is, it lacks words. Such an experience going there, beautiful location in the forest.
The people that work they are fantastic, I've been here twice now and wish I could go every day to try everything on their menu. Photos aren't enough to express how delicious the food here is.
Thank you so much! ☺☺🙏
P. G.
Excellent quality. Makes a nice change from the mass produced products. Will pop in again.
A. E.
Quite honestly the best bakery I have been to in Victoria. Literally anything we ate (we ate alot) was sensational. The aromas around the place will immediately tell you how fresh everything is but also in the taste of it all, you can appreciate the passion that goes into making sure everything being sold is packed full of flavour. The coffee is also the best around these parts and it's all set within a fantastic setting with the most friendly staff. Can't wait to come back!
R. Y. J. Y.
It is a great place post ride and there are so many riders there. Lots of passtries and bread. Fresh air and a good coffee, that's all u need. Friendly staff and heaps of outdoor tables are definitely family friendly place !!!
M. S.
Decadent and Dangerous... if you want a beef pie or an almond croissant get in early!
L. G.
Could not fault the pie, sausage roll or vegetable tart we had! Yum 😋
R. B.
This place is great. Obvious the breads and pastries, pies and quiches are made on site; they're fresh as and so tasty. Added bonuses of a cosy atmosphere, good service and foodie items to purchase and take home.
B. C.
We had an okay experience. We had a late lunch and ordered a pie each and a slice of pizza. My pie turned up, as did the slice of pizza for the kid but the other pie didn't as they hadn't put the order through properly. The food was nice enough and the asthetic was lovely although the tables were not wiped between customers.
A. S.
One of our regular (and best) Saturday morning go-to's when we are riding in the Nongs. You walk through the front door and on your left hand side as you walk in, is a long multi-tier cabinet displaying an amazing array of freshly baked delights. The biggest challenge is in the deciding. I highly rate this bakery.
S. A.
What to order first! Great food and coffee.
D. A.
the selection of pastries is always great and a welcomed treat at the weekend!
M. K.
Beautiful bakery cafe near Dandenong.
You should visit here when you enjoy Dandenong area.
E. L.
Love it! Baked goods are amazing and are made on site. I believe they even mill their own grains. So many delicious savoury and sweet goodies. Best coffee in the area too! Highly recommend.
C. R.
The pinnacle of baked goods in the ranges and possibly Melbourne. Coffee is standard for Melbourne and the staff are lovely.
I. D.
We are incredibly grateful to have such an amazing bakery/patisserie a short stroll away that not only shares the same values of biodynamics/quality food as us but also has a lovely owner (Caroline) who is the kindest and most thoughtful person and we’re so fortunate to have her in our hills community 🙏💛
The food is always incredible you really can’t go wrong (oat chai is lovely and creamy too without the bad thickeners most have). I bake a lot of organic treats myself but still enjoy every time we go down to Proserpina for something different and our favourite Russian honey cake 😍
V. S.
Honestly, this bakery/Cafe is the best in Victoria. I take the coffee bean from them since discovered this place as couldn’t find more tasty one for long time. Also, friendly and respectful staffs always make you welcoming.
Thanks
I. S.
Just phenomenal honestly, the best food around, friendly staff, great atmosphere... Just go there!
M. R.
We went there over a long weekend post COVID and queued up for some late lunch. While they ran out of most of the food on the menu, what we got was really fresh and tasty. The organic vegetable and lentil soup was very nice, hot on a cold day. The quiche and the pizza were fresh and tasty.
The only bit we didn't quite enjoy was the coffee. They were barely warm (despite asking for extra hot). And I wish they had almond milk, but that's really nit picking.
I would revisit the cafe. Next time I would go earlier, hopefully will have a choice of a wider menu.
G. F.
Cyclist friendly bakery in Sassafras. Wide selection of cakes, pastries and more substantial offerings.
R. J.
Lovely little bakery, busy but yummy pastries! My partner ordered two of their massive sausage rolls and he wanted a third because it was so good, lemon tart was sensational too.
It was also beautiful to see the bakers doing their thing while we sat and ate. The staff were lovely and one of the bakers even stopped to talk to a bread loving customer to share some secrets.
The only negative for me was the chocolate cake wasn't up to the other foods outstanding standard but not enough to stop me coming back.
A. K.
We had the lentil soup, toasted sandwich, lemon cream tart and a slice of cheesecake. The portions were generous, particularly the toasted sandwich and very, very tasty. A really high standard with reasonable pricing. The house made bread was really good and the lentil soup had a nice level of spice and a kick of citrus that made it bright and yummy. I'll definitely be coming back when in the area.
Service was excellent and the buzz around the venue created a great atmosphere.
C. S.
An amazing bakery with all handmade breads, pastries, pizzas and pies. The owners are always lovely. Some things to think about before coming, parking can be difficult around the area during lunch time, no take away cups available (they are environmentally friendly, so bring your own keep cup), arrive early to get the best picks of what they have to offer, because everything sells out fast! We arrived here for lunch at about 1:30 and all but 1 of the pies was gone! That says a lot about the quality of the food here :)
N. N.
Best cheese cake in Melbourne, tastes like cake not like sugar.
T. P.
Food is great but the setup extremely poor. I have been here three times with a minimum of a 25 minute wait in a single line to get to the one small counter where there is no urgency to take an order. You then wait an extra 25 minutes for the food to come out to your table.
J. A.
I've been back for this about five times. It's sensational flakey and balanced in flavour. Generally I find that when bakers incorporate coconut oil into pastry that the pastry becomes over powered on coconut flavour. These clever folks have worked with the strong flavour of coconut by using an amazing pickle jam that is 10/10
A. L.
Absolutely amazing little bakehouse! We ordered two toasties and the soup of the day and it was all so fresh and delicious. The eggplant toastie was absolutely devine, and we also got fresh lemonade which I really loved. I also got a peach and lemon curd tart to take away, which was so very nice. The prices are also incredibly cheap for the quality of food!! Staff were so lovely, and there are so many nice little places to sit and enjoy your food. Looking forward to the next time I go there!
M. W.
Everything about this place is fantastic! The food is amazing and relatively cheap compared with other like places. There is a little play area for kids outside. The citrus tart is delicious and when the macadamia chocolate tart is in season I would get this too!
E.
The toasted sandwiches are to die for! Fantastic bakery with fresh everything!
L. “.
Amazing pastries, desserts and other food available. Coffee was nice. Beautiful surroundings that would work in all weather, but stunning in spring/summer. When its busy it can feel pretty crowded due to the layout, but it was very busy when I was there.
D. E.
Been here three times now. Love it. Great coffee. Top quality hand baked breads and pies. They mill their own flour and you can watch the baker making the bread. Always packed so be prepared for a bit of a queue. Friendly staff and great service too.
E.
Yum. They even asked to cut my croissant They actually accept cash. Nice friendly service.
I. H.
Excellent food & great range. Good, efficient service.
A. A.
Came in near closing time and saw the pastries were almost completely gone, managed to try the almond brioche though which tasted great with a hint of citrus.
M. L.
Beautiful food, beautiful service. Dogs are allowed inside which is lovely.
B. M.
Lovely bakery in the midst of the sassafras forest region. Supports local produce and farms, bringing wonderful baked goods, cakes, sandwiches and breakfasts to the table. Only thing to watch out for is that they are seldom quiet - the place is quite busy around the clock. Some of their menu items are unavailable after peak timings, in which case it's what-you-see-is-what-you-get on the display shelves. Get in early and enjoy the fresh range of yummies!
P. L.
Had toasted sandwiches here with my family on the weekend. It wasn’t bad and we enjoyed their lemon tart as well. Ordering took ages however, as they only have one cashier and the food took a little while to come which was difficult for my hungry toddler. There was a play area for toddlers which kept him entertained but everything was a bit grubby and dusty as it was outdoors on the gravel.
P. T.
A very cool place with amazing artisan sandwiches.
A. S.
Such a wonderful range of tasty food and goodies. The toasted sandwiches were divine and also big. Inside was beautiful and warm but outside just has covered seating and can get pretty cold. So rug up as the place is super busy and you may end up having to sit outside.
K. B.
Very impressed. High quality ingredients turned into very tasty food. Great to see that they go the extra mile to even mill their own flour for their baking as the result is in the finished product being tasty (and more nutritious! ). Certainly will be heading there on my next Dandenong Ranges visit.

A wonderful variety of delicious things on the menu. Despite being busy, the food and drink for three was delivered quickly. Our toasted sandwiches were much nicer than your average sandwich, with delicious ham, gruyere cheese, avocado and mustard. Very bright and homely decor with many nice cakes on display inside.
R. D.
It has a chill out atmosphere with a wide range of delicatessen. We'd food here but we didn't enjoyed as it's too spicy. It was a shame because smelled and looked great. Maybe they could advise customers the chef like it very hot!
H. G.
Tasty products plus they stock my favourite Jam Lady jam. Friendly staff.
G. M.
Big serving food and very tasty as well. A wide variety from savoury to sweet.

Awesome food 😋
T. B.
Such incredible food and insanely great coffee! Thank you
M. C.
Lovely local bakery in the area. There’s always a queue outside of the shop and they provide a variety of yummy pastries and soup always make my mouth watering!
E. S.
Great food, caring service excellent reward at the end of a very scenic drive u p the Mountain.
D. U.
A favourite haunt for cyclist.. the pies are awesome. Including home made sauce/chutney
A. M.
Beautiful people and divine pastry. Definitely the best bakery in the Dandenong Ranges.
E. O.
Lovely spot. Great pit stop for bike riders. Nice coffee
C. G.
This place has really nice service, great coffee and this last very hot day the ice chocolate was awesome after a big ride in the hills. Perfect recovery drink! Seating outside next to your bikes so no one has to smell you!!!
Highly recommended as a meeting place and near the water fountain for filing your bottles though the cafe also has both still and sparkling water.
A. M.
Good bakery and épicerie. I had a vegetable pasty which was first rate, the lemon tart has great texture but weak flavour. Espresso was fantastic for a non-metropolitan café. The ambiance was good, nice and warm to escape the winter deluge.
S. M.
Great to get back up there and find the same quality bread products we know and love. Thanks Carolyn and team!
D.
Love this place, so much enticing food inside, coffee was good too surprisingly for such a busy cafe, the butter and bread is highly recommended! Amazing setting, and the smell of food is sublime.
N. L.
This place is not your average bakery. Certainly a cut above. Love the pizza breads they do. Can't go wrong when you grab a few slices and eat them in the park next door. Great location in Sassafras makes this worth a trip into the Dandenongs. I'm eager to return.
R. Z.
The bakery is A class. I would go again!
E. T.
If you're looking for outstanding coffee, bread, breakfast, sandwiches, pastries, locally made chutneys, honeys, sweets, etc. etc. This bakery is top shelf and will be a place I revisit next time I'm in the area.
M. B.
First visit picked up a sourdough rye loaf (fresh and delicious) and a piece of homemade pizza just as good. Friendly, efficient service and a airy shop to wander around and browse the gourmet produce on offer while we waited for takeaway
E. S.
Great food, caring service excellent reward at the end of a very scenic drive u p the Mountain.
K. C.
Favourite local cafe. I've never had a pastry that wasn't absolutely amazing here. Also, don't leave without a sausage roll or 10. ☺️
T. D.
Best bakery on earth👍Very kind staff and so much tasty food to choose from👍 20 star rating!
R. L. P.
Nice food, but service is very slow. One person on the counter with 5 people behind counter talking amongst themselves. Woman who took my payment felt the need to call me dear, love, and sweetheart in one transaction... Over trying to provide polite service is weird.
C. M.
Good coffee and fruit toast. Beautiful outdoor setting.
O. &. S. N. A.
Superstars of baked goods!!
🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
OMG everything is delicious!! Prove me wrong! Everything!! Must try! They are busy but we’ll worth the wait!
K. C.
Incredible savoury + sweet food, I had the pork sausage roll & macadamia tart, and it was life changing. One of the best bakeries I’ve ever been to - cute interior, lovely staff, great prices.
H. S.
How many cafes and sandwich shops do you know of which mill tbeir own flour and bake their own bread? This is the only one where the quality of the flour shines in all their preparations. Whether it's the egg tart, a pizza slice or their sandwiches - they all hit the spot every time. If you ask Mike, he'll tell you exactly how the flour mill works too. Love the passion and family feeling at this hidden gem.
S. M.
Delicious baked goods as well as amazing pies made on site. They have sparkling water on tap as well. plenty of seating indoors and out a must stop if you're in Sassafras.
S. O.
Sausage rolls are drenched in oil, as I picked it up a pinkish pork meat fell out of the roll, bottom part of the pastry is under cooked and not much flavour in the actual pork filling, would definitely go into Sunday's elimination. 😅
S. R.
I generally welcome any type of baked good but what i love more is being welcomed by an array of baked goods. Walk in the door of Proserpina and thats exactly what you get. On display are some if the tastiest looking croissants, tarts, cakes and pizza slabs. Follow the cabnets around to find pre-made sandwiches ready for toasting and a pie oven with the biggest and flakiest pies and sausage rolls i have seen to date. This isn't my first visit here and it certainly wont be my last
K. A.
Beautiful food in a beautiful setting, and very cyclist friendly. Will be back.
I. L.
Love the bread baked on premises. Awesome coffee and a great choice of breakfast, brunch and lunch options. Delicious pastries and cakes. Been back many times since moving to the area.
R.
i go bushwalking most weekends & check out different cafes each time ,it wasnt until my mate told this place had the tastiest fresh food with great flavours every day, until i tried it i have to agree ...we compare other cafes in the dandenings to proserpina bakehouse ...its the hight standard of food we compare all other food to here .
most other places make thier food weekdays & on weekends it starts going stale a bit ..not here they make it everyday fresh ...but can get very busy on weekends & not that much seating inside ...
K. S.
Warm and light environment. Cheese and ham relish sandwich fresh and generous. Also Pissaladiere which was perfectly done. Coffee is fantastic, they do a great almond cappuccino. Little details like crockery are aesthetic and feel durable. Picked up a pana De casa and some poached quinces from the deli. Overall a great place for lunch.
D. G.
Loved this placed. food was excellent. Highly recommend.
a. b.
Place is very Beautiful and inviting, Food Looks Beautiful ,but the taste is very bland, l had a salmon quiche and A Lemon citrus tart, the tarts crust was so hard and had no taste, the quiche also had no taste .Apart from that Beautiful place.
V. K.
Have been here twice and there is a lovely atmosphere and good food. The coffee not great at all. Bitter and weird chocolate on the cappuccino. Change your coffee bean supplier and it will be perfect
S. H.
Delightful food, excellent coffee and terrific service. A unique experience of Hills hospitality with the panache of high-end flavours and culinary creativity.
H.
Fantastic bread!!! Good coffee, pies and pastries too! One of my favourite cafes in Melbourne. Added bonus is that food and drinks are reasonably priced
D. L.
Proserpina is a one of a kind bakery. The bread is not cheap, but you truly get what you pay for. When I can afford to splash some cash I head up the mountain to stock up! The drive up mountain hwy to the bakery is always a treat as well.
D. S.
Amazing fresh food. Good coffee. Smells like a true bakery.
M. C.
Delicious food, amazing staff
J. M.

The most magnificent bread and butter pudding I've ever had. We got there at 2pm on Sunday and the pies were all sold out, though, so get in early!
D. M.

E. L.
Pleasant coffee and tasty strawberry jam
R. M.
Very cool place that's dog friendly. The food and coffee is great. They also sell local products such as sauces, relishes, honey and more which are all incredible.
J. a. B.
This place is always busy. The service is very good. We came here for sandwiches. They were very fancy but they tasted good! The serving size is extremely generous.
A. P.
A wonderfully cosy cafe, with homemade bread, cakes and meals. Friendly staff. Highly recommend the vegetarian curry and the Syrian fig cake!
J. A.

Happened on this newly opened cafe/bakery in Sassafras. Coffee was excellent and our food, especially the home made beef pie was declared 'tasty' by my companion.
T. T.
Amazing bakery with such beautiful, fresh and organic food. Definitely coming back here again.
A. L.
Another Sassafras gem. Nestled in the heart of Sassafras, opposite Miss Marple's. A fabulous selection of cakes, pastries and pavlovas and a great menu on offer.
I am a regular visitor to this fabulous eatery.

Great bakehouse and cafe. This place is very popular and it can be very difficult to get a table on the weekend. The pastries are especially good here.

It was nice but I left a little underwhelmed. I might have had higher expectations due to what I had heard from others and images posted online.

Ok bakery/eatery in Sassafras. I do not understand why this place is so crowded as the baked goods are very average. Service a bit snobby. Overall, I could take it or leave it!
