Comments of Azuki Bakery
W. L.
Best Japanese bakery in town in my opinion. Love their Shokupan, you can eat it as is (it's already so good by itself, so you know how good it is!), or use whatever topping you like. I'd recommend getting their beef curry pan (the bread's so fluffy!!) & melon pan as well. Won't go wrong to order some cakes as well. I like their Chestnut Mont Blanc.
Another plus point is that all those won't break your bank, it's reasonably priced.

After a long-awaited re-opening, Azuki delivers and opens the doors to 2022. INDOMITABLE.
Please read my top 3 plus more.
1. MENTAIKO SOURDOUGH STICK
Absolute detonation of umami with the salty mentaiko on a crunchy, yeasty sourdough. FTD. Consistently fire. R18+ if you get it when the bread is still warm.
2. KIMCHI SAUSAGE ROLL
Buttery MADNESS.
Pastry is crisp on the top and bottom, and flakes are thicc. Prepare for divine elevation when you get the top crust, mezzo kimchi mince and bottom crispy base all in one bite. Get hit with that sesame oozy blast and your eyes might roll back to the back of your head. It's that good.
3. FISH BURGER
Panko-massaged cod laid within a sesame brioche bun. Just the right amount of eggy Kewpie tartare and some delicate garnishes.
CURRY PAN (Veggie)
Actual visible/diced vegetables (edamame, zucchini and red capsicum) in the curry, which is virtually unheard of in Sydney. Solid representation of a Japanese bakery classic.
YAKISOBA PAN
Slightly dark yakisoba (Japanese mi goreng) sits in a pillowy brioche roll, mohawked by a korokke (croquette). The korokke steals the show however - it’s got a hard, crisp outlet layer and the inside mash is so tasty with peas, carrots and corn. If they sold a korokke roll I would buy 24.
MATCHA MELON PAN
Ticks all the boxes of a good melon pan with a wet matcha custard inside. Anything matcha in Sydney is usually quite meh but this one hits the spot. Yum.
SHOKU PAN
When making katsu-sando, the fluffy-as-clouds milk bread is indispensable. Azuki’s shoku pan did the job superbly, gracefully maintaining the structural integrity of my home-made sando.
KRANSKY SAUSAGE PAN
Another Japanese bakery staple revamped with a sanga that has crisp tangy bite-back. Mustard seeds on top for good measure.
BACON EPI
Mildly jaw-clenching white bread laced with nostalgic bacon. Yuzu kosho creeps up on you and reminds you that the Azuki crew aren’t playing any games. Slightly warmed up would be better.
Get these people a damn Michelin star already!

I bought the melon pan, matcha choux, and matcha roll. All I have to say is that everything was awesome! If you are a matcha lover, you definitely have to go here. Going back soon to try the matcha melon pan and matcha azuki bun!
N. T.
The matcha puff and yuzu cheesecake are both so yummy. The puff is very smooth and the consistency of the cheesecake is incredible
A.
Bought their yuzu cheese cake, melon pan and matcha cake. Really delicious!
E. H.
I ordered four desserts and one white bread. I strongly recommend the yuzu cheese cake, I don’t normally eat yuzu, but this one is not too strong. And textures are great.
The chocolate one is a bit too bitter. Puff and green tea cake roll are ok. White bread is not as soft and sweet as I imagined. (I did expect them to be much better)
But I would like to come back and try the strawberry and chestnut cake.
A. C.
The mochi ichigo was so yummy! The cream puff was nice too! They have a lovely selection of things - next time I’m going to try more of the savouries 😍
D. N.
The staff were super friendly and helpful. The selection of Japanese pastries and cakes make the experience a must visit!
C. H.
The cakes by Azuki is very soft and melts in your mouth that you'll love it through and through. The ordering process is quite straight forward over the website and don't let the low quality photos on the web fool you. They are just as great as you can imagine. The team is very responsive and will coordinate with you over emails if you want to make any changes. Highly recommend for the service and the quality of the products.

Walked past this random Japanese bakery and popped in to have a look. Cake was smooth and light like the ones in Japan but the clear winner was the milk bread. Yudane style bread was so soft and fluffy.
Looking forward to buying everything in the store on my next visit.
L.
Found this nice lil Japanese-style bakery in Newton. Went a bit crazy and bought a bunch of stuff to try: yuzu cheesecake, curry pan, strawberry layered cake and the melon pan. Everything was made fresh. The curry and melon pan was super airy, they just melt in your mouth. The cakes were delightful, and not overly creamy or sweet. Will need to go back and try the other stuff, hopefully soon.
Tip: as obvious as this may sound, eat the curry pan while it’s hot and if you’re lucky, get the ones that’s straight from the oven. Soooo good!

The coffee and baked goods are amazing, it felt like I was transported to Japan and had the perfect vibe. It was extremely busy (makes sense for how good it was) but the service was quick and efficient. The best start to a day!
J. N.
Dear Azuki
Your products are great and I love it. The staff are friendly. I make a trip there every day to satisfy my appetite.
But I'm not happy that you're closed Monday, Tuesday, and now Wednesday too that every Sunday I have to buy more to stock up and survive for the 3 days till you open again :D
Yours sincerely
Y. S.
Only down side is how small this place is. I wish it was alot bigger. With Covid restrictions only two people are allowed inside at a time.
Food was amazing though! More vegetarian options would be good however sweet options are available, and the baugettes are to die for.
Y.
This cafe offers delicately baked treats that you can't find on George St Sydney CBD with the same quality. This place really breathes authenticity and quality, not quantity.
I grew up with fresh cream cake with fruits and this place just hit the spot with strong memories of Japan. I would recommend their first bread also, very Japanese and deliciously soft. Their mochi red bean was a surprise and not bad if you're into that. Their Matcha bread roll slice is highly recommended. I drool about it !!
A. E.
Authentic Japanese bakery selling incredible desserts and treats. I always spend so much money as I can’t decide what my favourite is. The girls who work there are always so sweet as well!
C. L.
Yes! Strawberry shortcake!! This is really good. The strawberries are fresh, cream is nice and not too sweet. The sponge’s the important bit, where it’s not sugary and is springy.
It’s nice to find a place that does traditional Japanese bakery bread, like yakisoba buns and melon buns. I love how there’s no onions that are visible in this yakisoba, and the mustard seeds are a great addition. Bread is nice and soft!
Coffee is not too bad, Milk Lab almond milk is used, so that’s really good.
E. T.
Had the Strawberry Layer Cake and Mochi Ichigo - The cake was soft, fluffy, and not overly sweet. Mochi Ichigo was superb and delicious. We ordered two coffees and they were served at perfect temperature. Will definitely be back to try some Azuki pan and Match Azuki pan.

I have been looking for a great Japanese bakery for a while and was very excited to learn about Azuki from a friend. Loved the melon pan, curry pan and yakisoba pan. Some friend pans are a bit greasy. I recommend that you take them home and air-fry to reheat and get rid of the excess oil ;)
J. Q.
One of my favourite bakeries in Sydney. Very authentic Japanese products. Highly recommend the kare pan (curry bread), fish burger and the chestnut Mont Blanc. Everything is fresh, and the service is excellent.
J. B.
Everything here is so nice but my fav is the fish burger!
D. L.
After withdrawals from Kare Pan (curry pan) in japan, I was ecstatic to find that Enmore has such a great Japanese bakery offering really delicious, locally made Kare pan! The place is small and cute, and they bake everything on site. We got there in time for some hot Kare pan freshly cooked- crispy, chewy and really addictive curry inside. The kare pan is behind the counter, so don’t fret if you don’t see it in the main display. We also tried the sausage wrapped in pastry- also very yummy.
There are so many more sweet and savoury options- so I will be going back!
Great coffee and lovely service too
R. Y.
I can't reccommend this japanese bakery highly enough! It just brings back all the good memories we had back in Japan.. staff are so courteous❤ We love every bread/pastry we bought..just the right amount of sweetness, I could tell they use good quality matcha.. my favourite are the savoury ones esp. the beef curry pan and mentaiko🤤
T. L.
A must try Japanese bakery place in Newtown. We tried Melon pan, Uji matcha rolls and Yuzu cheesecake today and they were all nice. The Melon pan was buttery and the matcha rolls were deep in matcha flavour and creamy. The shop participates in conserving the environment with paper bags and 20c extra for carrying plastic bag. Highly recommended!
G. M.
Authentic Japanese bakery serving delicious pastries and desserts. The service is friendly and warm. Price is reasonable and the quality is second to none. Keep an eye on their special dishes. Highly recommended.
J. Z.
Delicious Japanese bread and cake. Soft, not too sweet. Just like you had in Japan!! Loved it!
A. E.
I cannot recommend this place enough! The staff are incredibly friendly and seem genuinely happy to be there. The pastries themselves are delicious and very reasonably priced, considering the wonderful quality! It's a small little shop, but it's filled to the brim with delicious items. They often sell brand new desserts and you can keep up to date with what's on offer through their social media, namely Instagram. Please give these guys a try! The lady who served me when I visited was very kind and friendly.

Where to start, my mate today took me to this Bakery. My first impression was it was pretty small walked in and when I saw the cakes and the Deserts, didn’t care about the size of the place😂, Didn’t know where to begin so my mate recommended me the custard puff and a strawberry cake 🤤🤤.Let me tell you it was amazing he got me hooked, Customer service was just amazing very friendly always smiling very bubbly.
I highly recommend it For friends, families of all ages to come down and give this ago,
you will not regret it...

A lovely Japanese bakery in Newtown. Came here long time ago for a few times for their matcha croissant, matcha mon blanc and some other sweets treat and I remember I enjoy them. When I walk pass this place I decided check it out again. Got the vegetarian curry Pan and Melon Pan and they are all yummy. Small bakery shop but adequate with sweet and savoury Japanese baked treat.
S. W.
Great and reasonably priced bread, I want to go there again for the curry bread and the cake. The atmosphere was nice and warm, the location also easy to reach from Newtown train station. The choice here is broad, I even confused when I got here, because all of them looks delicious, so I tried the matcha and milky melon bread (I forgot the exact name), and it was so good. I really curious about the salty breads, especially the curry one. Must try.
Y.
Lovely Japanese cakes and friendly staff. The texture of the sponge cake was light and fluffy. The cream wasn't too sweet and was perfect with strawberries. It's hard to find a good Japanese strawberry cake in Sydney. The Mont Blanc was more on the sweet side but I love the strong chestnut flavor in the puree. The small matcha cake under it added to the texture.
I. G.
This is one of our favourite bakeries in Sydney. The kransky in puff pastry and the creme anglaise-filled profiterole were excellent. The almond croissant and matcha were a little dry but was still delicious. Their sourdough bread is also very good in taste and texture. With friendly staff to boot, what’s not to love?
N. V.
Came here after seeing a TikTok video. Travelled 1.5 hours to get there. The place is very small, the video made it look huge, must have been the lens and there’s only a couple displays with food. I got the Melon Pan, the Japanese Sausage bread, a Strawberry Mochi and a Long Black. Coffee was very good and great temperature.
I tried a mix, the Strawberry Mochi was good, it had different layers of goodness: Mochi, cream, strawberry jam, sponge cake. The Melon Pan was tasty and sweet and the Japanese sausage bread was my highlight, very yummy and full of flavour.
However, for the price and the hype I was expecting a lot more. I have been to Japanese bakeries in Japan so I was looking for somwrhing like that. You can find similar (or the same stuff) in George Street for half the price, there’s different Japanese bakeries there.
Overall great experience, the girls working there were incredibly kind and nice, they set up a socially distanced chair for me outside too. But I wouldn’t travel again just to eat there.
z.
The chestnut mont blanc is good, however the yakisoba pan is average.
J. C.
I’ve bought about 8 different items here and ALL of them are soo delicious…. I have to go back to the queue to make my 2nd round order.
street parking only. 3 little table outside the shop only.
J. N.
Great service from Japanese speaking staff. All bread and cake products are delicious. The savoury breads (mentai-bread & yakisoba) is not as good as their sweets, but the bread used is still well-made.
A. R.
Japanese style bakery. Sourdoughs are good, coffee average, a bit narrow to seat down but it suits the Japanese’s style. Recommend their super thick cut bread loaf and mochi cake. Also if you like Japanese style fresh cream cake, call them three days I advance to customise fresh cream cakes. The matcha cream cake is the best Japanese style cak we have had in Sydney.
D. R.
Japanese bakery that brings both traditional and fusion flavours. Given social distancing rules, there was a looong line outside the shop to get in. I was buying for myself and three friends so worth the wait. One inside I was pleasantly surprised by the wide range of savoury and sweet baked goods on offer. Overall nothing is bad in this shop. Stand out for me was curry pan, azuki pan, strawberry mochi cake, strawberry cake and Yuzu donut. Will be back again to try the other half of the menu
M. T.
Great little bakery. Awesome breads and lots of cute delicious cakes. Best of all the people are so nice ☺️. And it is REAL Japanese, not just named or style.
Y. M.
Great Japanese pastries, I was pleasantly surprised about how good it is even though I’m not much of a pastry person. They have good selection of tea and coffee too. Would recommend this place though it’s pretty small and doesn’t have a lot of sitting areas.
J. N.
Been really missing travel and esp japan since I go there like once a year.. drove an hour and 10 min to this place to get a melon pan and curry puffs... 100% worth it. Also got a mad loaf of sourdough that I’m keen to try.
N. L. -. l.
We had the matcha cake, mochi strawberry and azuki mont blanc cake with earl grey tea. Delicious Japanese flavours! Cakes were moist and soft. Some seating inside and some outside. Gets very busy on the Sunday afternoon we were there.
H. W.
Loved their pastries. Friends bought some over. Cream puff is delicious, the yuzu cheesecake screams of yuzu, the matcha puff is very matcha-ish.
T. M.
Loved it!! They nailed the mentaiko baguette!! Reminded me of Japan! Great curry pan & Kim chi pork sausage roll. Definitely recommend it!
J. Y.
Our prime go to place for their white japanese thin sliced bread. It tells you that people are always willing to travel to get the right ingredients.
You mostly need to be early as sometimes even just after lunch time the popular breads are already sold out.
E. T.
Try the creampuff! It'll probably be the greatest puff you will ever taste. They are golden crisp toasty on the outside and fluffy yet dense on the inside. My favourite would be the matcha puff. Its obvious they used a generous amount of matcha for the cream as you'll notice a pleasant savoury + fruity bitterness, with a little nutty undertone and a smooth sweetness to the flavour. I wish I could have this everyday.
P. G.
a small little Japanese bakery on busy Enmore next to Stinking Bishops & Hakiki Ice cream. There is a range or sweet & savoury breads/pastries, cakes & cookies. I tried the yakosoba pan - fried noodles in a long bread roll. Tasty but a little strange. The strawberry sponge cake was light & fluffy & not too sweet which was enjoyable. The matcha swiss roll was also light and had good matcha flavour which was lovely. Staff is very friendly & helpful.
M.
Azuki Bakery is a true gem. They’ve nailed every aspect from service to scent and taste yet at the same time being affordable. The uji match roll that I got was moist without being heavy on the palate, had a good balance of bitterness and sweetness and you could smell the aroma of matcha powder upon unwrapping the plastic wrap around the dessert. Would visit again to try out their other items on the menu.
T. T.
Curry pan is my favourite! Then fish burger!! Then the breads!!! I strongly recommend if you are looking for a real Japanese bakery.
While in the bakery, coffee there is great too!!
Just FYI to the business owner, I miss Tamago Sandwich and Kurumi baguette💦💦💦
O. N.
Lovely place with wide range of Japanese pastries with both sweet and savoury options. Should definitely try the custard puff. Coffee was great too! Great service too, the staffs were very nice :)
S. F. L.
This cute small japanese bakery serves authentic japanese baked goods and is run by Japanese staff which is excellent to see. There is not a huge range but a good amount for a quick bite or a coffee and cake. Tried some of the matcha Swiss roll, it was a soft and delicate sponge with a deep matcha flavoured cream that really hit to spot. I’m keen to try the melon pan bread next time.
F. W.
All the matcha bakery are very yummy and creamy, not overly sweet. Will definitely visit again when next time in Newtown.
D. V.
Loved the strawberry shortcake, matcha roll and yuzu cheesecake.Really good quality !!
J. K.
I have only tried the bread here and it is nice. They seem to run out of the small bread rolls fast. I haven’t tried anything else as it doesn’t seem vegan.
Y. L.
The Yuzu cheese cake and matcha crossoint is wonderful. However, the matcha latte we ordered are too sweet. Cute Japanese bakery, worth to try. There is 1% surcharge for card payment so do bring your cash.
D. G.
I ordered a sponge and cream cake for my graduation from AZUKI and guys didn't disappoint. Filled with fruits, rich cream and soft sponge, it was one of the most beautiful cakes I have ever seen. My guests were truly impressed and so were the waiters at the restaurant.
I made an order on Sunday and it was ready to pick up on Tuesday, just in time for my graduation celebration on Wednesday.
J. G.
I think I’ve tried almost everything in this bakery and everything is just amazing! The staff are always so very friendly. Definitely need to try the curry pan and the custard puff. The pork and kimchi sausage roll is probably one of the best sausage rolls I’ve ever eaten. The pastry is so flaky and the filling surprisingly delicious.
The Matcha roll and melon cake are also great sweet choices. Heck everything was great!
E. T.
A good place for you to enjoy Japanese style bake goods and desserts such as strawberry shortcake, green tea cakes, curry bun and mochi.
D. L.
Real authentic Japanese bakery here. My favourite is tartar fish Burger, full of flavour. Beef Carry pan is my second best. Also Chestnut Mont blanc, strawberry layered cake were delicately made it and so delicious. It's remind me when I visited in Japan. People were waiting for to order a bit but service was quick and staff are nice and kind.I think Best Japanese bakery in Sydney.
