Comments of Lode Pies

Lode Pies, from the Lumi Dining team, is running an amazing operation in Surry Hills. Their pastries are second to none! Probably one of the best croissant pastry dough I’ve ever had, cooked to perfection by keeping a crusty out layer and buttery deliciousness inside. I wish they’d sell more plain pastries using just the dough and / or fewer ingredients. Unfortunately I found the fillings trying to be too over complicated and lost me with confused flavours. Less is more sometimes. Highly recommended though and every palate is different. Enjoy!

Finally got some time to visit Lode Pies! Was not disappointed. Flaky and crispy pastries and well balanced flavours! The pie and sausage roll was okay, but highly recommend the ham and cheese and blueberry pastries! Also give the hazelnut latte a try 😋😋

Really delicious pastries!!! Just scrumptious 😍
Have tried the chicken pie, blueberry tart, sausage roll, ham & cheese croissant, pistachio croix!
The blueberry tart was very yummy 👌🏻 your friends won’t be disappointed if you get them one 🤓
The cheese on the ham&cheese croissant smelled realllly good.
Sausage roll was yummy with homemade spicy tomato sauce 🌶 🍅
The chicken pie was really good too and just had multiple dimensions of flavour 👀
10/10 recommend people to come and try 👏🏻

Pastries absolutely delicious. Service is super friendly. However, they could do with some serious consulting on how to serve your customers in a reasonable time period. Yes there’s a line, but they try to emulate Lune, who smashed through their customers fast. Fix the time waiting and this is a place worth coming to.

As you might recall, one of my pandemic side quests has been finding the perfect pie and sausage roll. LuMi chef Federico Zanellato has got to be a contender with his newish Surry Hills endeavour, Lode Pies & Pastries. I recently joined the masked queue stretching down Crown Street to enter this pale pink palace of puff pastry. Arriving as the hour neared noon was a rookie mistake that meant I encountered a smaller range than listed on the wall-mounted menu of pastries.
Sausage rolls ($10/each) are rolled with a little kick to the side. This changes the ratio of seed-crusted pastry to tasty well-seasoned sausage mince and it eats all the better for it. I’d be hard pressed to remember a better pork sausage roll. Tasty fillings continue into a chicken and leek pie ($13), and once again it’s balanced by excellent pastry. With eggplant and ‘nduja the Calabrian ($12) takes the filled croissant into new territory. I like it, both in concept and execution, where layers and layers of laminated pastry shatter to reveal a soft buttery interior. Would return to try the rest of the range.

Thought I'd join the bandwagon to try what's on offer at this trendy pie shop and bakery
I arrived just before 8am and the line was already long. The place is small and only offers take away ( there is a little banquette on site but it is only for waiting whilst your order is being processed- coffee?)
the kitchen is at the back on the top floor. The customer service is friendly and quick
there were 10 items on display at the counter
as I have not tried any before, I decided to buy a selection
the LUMI pithivier- this buttery, flaky, melt in your mouth goodness is my fave. At $20, it is quite pricey, but oh so worth it! The accompanying chicken jus sauce is amazing, I just wish there was more of it!
Jin-Ius- flaky pastry with roasted white chocolate, almond marzipan and raisins is DIVINE! My fave from the sweets on offer- better hurry as this is limited and it will soon be off the menu to make way for part dieux
Calabrian- sesame seed topped savoury pastry filled with eggplant slices, Nduja, Basil and Pecorino cheese
Mr Peanut- similar to a cronut in consistency, it has bananas, chocolate and peanuts- surprisingly YUM and very moreish
The others on offer are all worth mentioning:
Crown on 487 ( they only make 15 per day and I was lucky enough to score the last one for the day!)
Pistachio Croix
Blueberry Tart- so yummy!
Sausage Roll with tangy, spicy tomato sauce
these are all quite good but the ones above were my favourites
definitely worth waking up early and lining up for!!!

The BEST beef pie I've ever had!
Come queue before 8am so you can get the one you want.
Some people might say it's bit pricey/ the line is long/supply under demand...but hey it's soft opening for a reason. If you come with a critical heart then you wouldn't enjoy the beauty of the food!
In the age of mass production, no matter what, I just wanted to salute to the (pastry) chefs that you are making a difference.
Cheap and cheat food easily found everywhere, while something made with ♥️ is the true precious.
J. C.
Pastries taste 10/10. Super flakey, crispy and flavoursome. Mr Peanut, blueberry tart and the chicken and leek pie were great. However, pricey at over $10 a pastry
Staff friendly and patient.
Where it could improve on is the speed of service. There are no labels on the display pastries (only prices) which means that every customer that gets to the front needs to ask what each pastry is, the staff need to explain and it creates a slow moving queue. If I didn’t have spare time on my Sunday I would not have waited in line for that long. An easy fix to a frustrating customer problem !

Probably one of the best pastries I've ever had. You can tell that they focus on limited items in order to get the parties to perfection. Well structured layers that are incredibly flaky and buttery. The chicken pie in terms of the flavour probs isn't my fav but the meat is tender and overall flavour very well balanced. We'll come back for the Lumi next time!
C. L.
These flavours may not be up your alley and maybe you just prefer a good ol' classic meat pie but you have to appreciate and respect the innovation and artistry that goes into making the pastries at Lode.
Firstly, the textures are amazing and unique. I never knew pastry could flake that way!
My favourite was actually Mr Peanut. Croissant dough with peanut frangipane and caramelised banana. Don't let the dense Cronut like exterior fool you, it is ultra light and the texture is somewhere between crisp like a wafer and crunchy like toasted bread! Sweet but not too sweet.
The Signature Wagyu Brisket LuMi Pithivier - I don't know how the pleat-like edges of the pastry could be so crisp yet flaky and buttery. I could eat that on its own but could definitely do with more meat filing inside though because it's 50% pastry.
The chicken and leek pie was interesting too. The pastry was once again, fantastic and the aromatics on top gave it a great fragrance and additional crunch. The filling itself was so familiar, a bit asian and reminded me of a Vietnamese beef stew dish called bo kho.
Lastly, we had the jin-lus which I thought should've been named "the Armidillo" because that's exactly what it looked and felt like. Filling tastes like cherry ripe - chocolate with morello cherries. Not a fan of cherries so this was my least favourite but pastry texture was super unique and it's pretty amazing the way it wriggles when you twist it.
I recommend all. Give this a go if you're in the area.

Surry Hills sees a new kid on the block with
Lode Pies and Pastries. The little outlet can be found on Crown St and is very inviting with its pale pink and grey aesthetic.
It seems more like a boutique small bakery, not large scale, with a small glass box showcasing their offerings of sweet and savoury pies. Once they’re sold out, that’s it for the day. We’d recommend getting there early, for the highly anticipated bakery had huge lines over the weekend and by our visit at 11, a few things had already sold out, including the famed LuMi meat pie with brisket and shiitake mushrooms.
The upmarket pies use high quality ingredients designed by two chefs from the LuMi restaurant; owner-chef Federico Zanellato and Lorenzo Librino. We tried their “ham and cheese”, a crispy puff casing filled with ham, green olives, jalapeños, scarmorza, Parmesan and chives. The cheese and chives also dusted the top of this delicious savoury pie. They also sell a chicken pie, sausage roll and larger sized pie with pork.
For the sweet type, we had their Tiramisu pie made with croissant dough, filled with Marsala custard, cocoa biscuit and coffee cream. Not only did this look like a work of art, it’s also incredibly delicious and decadent. There’s also a brioche, blueberry tart, apple turnover, Jin-us (almond marzipan, white chocolate and raisins) and one labelled “crown on 487” with white chocolate cream, raspberry glaze, pistachio and rose.
They also have a coffee machine making coffees using The Little Marionette bean.
A cool spot and worth a visit for these baked goods!

Everything we had was amazing quality and presentation was beautiful. My personal favourite was the eggplant croissant and blueberry tart. Service was super friendly and welcoming. Would def recommend coming in and trying it out.
I. Z.
Beautiful combination of rich pastry and fillings. Lumi pie has incredibly rich pastry and very subtle filling. Sausage roll, on the other side, has a nice spicy kick and the pastry is less rich. Great ballance.
Absolutely worth trying.
R. C.
I had high hopes for this place and was pleasantly surprised with the Blueberry tart. Everything about it was absolutely delightful, each blueberry was perfectly placed.
We had two other pastries on our visit, one with hazelnut, chocolate and cranberries or raspberries. The other pistachio cream paired with apricot.
The quality of the croissants themselves was superb, but the flavour pairings were off the mark for me.
B. Y.
Absolutely amazed by the pastries here. Bravo! The price reflects the quality here. Espresso for 4 dollars made me hesitate though, caps still the way to go @4.5 which is good!
Definitely worth a treat. Blue Berry tart was amazing.
M. C.
Lode gives pastries a fine dining twist, with one of their signature items - Crown on 487, being a bit of a must have alongside the LuMi pie. Pastry work is amazing and it shows.
That said, as they're not your average neighbourhood bakery, there are a couple of curveballs. There won't be any $7 coffee and pastry combo, with most items being around $10 or more.
Service is friendly but can be a bit touch and go. Some customers spend a lot of time at the counter being served, some less, which can push wait times out a fair bit.
E. H.
The signature (P1) is great, pastry is amazing - melt in your mouth. Blueberry and raspberry are not too sweet and taste fresh, but nothing too special. It will be great if I can simply buy and go, but I am not going to line up for more than an hour for this.
纪.
Taste good. Blueberries tart not that sweet. Big portion with reasonable price. Staff really cool. Can try
A. I. W.
The chicken pie and sausage roll were great! The pistachio croissant was okay. I really wanted to try the lumi pie but it was sold out that day. Can’t wait to try the lumi pie on my next visit 🥧🤤
J. H.
Amazing pastries at this place, it was all freshly made and crispy. Not too heavy and not too sweet!
J. P.
Amazing pastries and beautiful presentation. Super friendly customer service and good coffee. Highly recommend the blueberry tart.
P. F.
Be prepared to be blown away by the fancy look of the pastries and their unique taste. I love croissants and tried many in Sydney. This place is really on another level and must be tried!
Expect to pay a premium of course for the really expensive products but they are worth it
s. b.
Absolutely delicious!
The ham and cheese savory and the flaky texture was out of this world.
The Calabrian was insanely good. The eggplant, ‘nduja, and basil were spot on. The ‘nduja has a spicy kick to it and doesn’t take away from the other flavors.
Just moved to the neighborhood and found our pastry spot!
C.
The pastries are amazing. The line is long, and this is because the service is too slow (a good 45 minute wait when visiting at opening times) but the staff are super friendly and the pastries and pies are worth the wait.
I would plan to visit and takeaway a selection for breakfast at home, not so much a place to stop by for a quick coffee and a pie or snack to eat.
The coffee really isn't great, but you aren't visiting for the coffee and I'm sure there are some initial teething issues that will eventually get ironed out. Coffee beans used are The Little Marionette.
D. C.
Incredible attention to detail, you can tell the team really cares about their pastries and using high quality ingredients. Disappointing they haven't paired this with a high quality roaster, there a plenty of better coffee options in Surry Hills and on the same street even.
N. L.
Tired during soft opening and absolutely loved the pastries. They are on the pricier side the weight of each pastry we bought was so much heavier than any others we've purchased before. And to the dough is done to perfection.
Service was abit slow but it was soft opening, totally understand the trialing period and the guys were very friendly and trying to move as efficiently as they could.
R. C.
I love the creativity of their pastries, they have amazing flavours and form. Yeah a little expensive, but I appreciate the art that goes into making them.
Don't go on a weekend - always so busy, but I went at 10am on a Thursday and again on a Friday with no wait...
M.
Very nice …
The blueberry tart is a must!
S. H.
It is probably one of the best pastries I’ve tried in Sydney. I went for the first time couple of weeks ago and it is now part of my Sunday routine. The pastries are crunchy and soft in the inside. It is true that there is a bit of a waiting but also… what can you expect when the products are that good? Also… they just open 3 days per week so it is understandable.
It is a must in surry hill!
A. H.
An awesome little pie & pastry shop by the masters behind Lumi, the pies are always delicious and well prepared. The staff are always friendly, and the coffee is great!
M. H.
The pastries are delicious but the pie fillings are all too salty
M. L.
Best croissant I’ve ever tasted. Everything is really crafted well here. Great addition to the Surry Hills scene.

Love MR. Peanut!
Really crunchy ❤️

Welcoming, delicious, the Hot Cross Bun\Croissant was perfection, excellent coffee - Massively Recommended.

Love the pastries and the sweet here. Really recommended.🤩🤩🤩
L. P.
The most beautiful pastries you can find in Sydney, and the best sausage roll you can find in Australia.
J. Q.
Loved the eggplant and sausage croissant
j. a. l. (.
Beautiful sausage rolls, pies, pasteries, great service with friendly banter,. Was a real experience..cant wait to try their other pasteries.
J. L.
Beautiful pastries, worth the wait!!
L.
Absolutely delicious pastries. Service was also amazing. A special thanks to Benjamin!
Y. L.
Nice pastry - but is it worth queuing and then finding out half the menu is not available, probably not? Why can’t they allow for preorders, that would make everyone’s life easier?
T. C.
Best baked goods and super friendly service 👍
S. T.
Loved all the pies. The best sweet pastries. And the ham and cheese is to die for.
H. W.
Nice place... Abit over expensive..will only try the most expensive once (you all should)... But i will try the others soon... Really nice pastry... Flaky...
A. C.
My 4th visit and it won't be my last. Consistently excellent pastries of sweet and savoury varieties.
D. K.
The food is top notch and yes, there will be lines - if they're open. The opening times are a joke, Thursday to Sunday?
D. W.
Great pastries but the wait times stop this place from being a 5 out of 5.
A. L.
Cute pastry spot
S.
Very expensive but the pastries are really good!
J. S.
Definitely worth a try the chicken pie was so different and delicious
r. L.

Just perfect

(Translated) It was very delicious and I wanted to go there again.
If you ask for a batch of coffee, please put it in v60 and it seems that you are using Mexican beans.
It's understandable that the barista and the clerk, who are very friendly, can form a line.
The beef pie I was looking for was already sold out around 1 o'clock, but when I tried the cheese-based pie I was aiming for second, the white sauce was well-balanced with the pie in my mouth, reminding me of Japanese gratin. It was a nice taste.
In addition, blueberry tart is a sweet but elegant sweetness, and it was a dish that black coffee goes on.
The other pie is still full and I haven't eaten it yet, so I'll update my impressions later.
It was a treat.
