Quaint little cafe on Latrobe terrace with a great outdoor area. Food was fantastic and the staff were friendly and helpful. Service was great too however due to covid we’re guessing the table service and the clearing away of glasses/plate staff was limited. I would definitely go again because the food was fabulous and the outdoor ambiance was welcoming and relaxing.

Not sure if they were having an off day today but the service was extremely slow. When the food finally arrived the coffee was great so lots of praise for that. The Reuben sandwich was also very tasty but the big disappointment was the rustic fries. They just appeared to be packet fries. If the. Menu had just said fries then that would have been our expectations but rustic you sort of expect something special

We decided to have an early (around 8.30am) breakfast at Sassafras on a Sunday morning. The facade of the venue as well as the inside decor is very homely, and feels as though you were walking through your neighbour’s house, the indoor seating looked a bit cramped and loud so we opted for backyard seating which was very comfortable and quiet. We were greeted swiftly upon arrival, given seating options as well as food and drinks menus. We ordered drinks first, from a menu with a lot of variety, including juices, smoothies, shakes, non-caffeinated hot drinks and classic coffee options. We picked the cold drip, shot of espresso, and a turmeric latte. All drinks came relatively quickly and were very well made, the cold drip was not bitter, had great flavour, and the turmeric latte had a good amount of spices and heat. Shortly before receiving our drinks we had ordered our food, the menu selection for breakfast was very appetising, and there was a wide range of options of varying dietary restrictions. We noticed there was a specials’ board hanging on the wall, though unfortunately that was not brought to our attention by our server. After much deliberation we finally decided to share two plates: the corn fritters with extra smoked mushrooms and the ricotta hotcakes, with extra banana and maple syrup. The food arrived promptly and piping hot. Everything looked house-made and of great quality, well presented with a good amount on each plate. The corn fritters were quenelled then deep fried, which was a great twist on the usual pancake-style pan fried version, and tasted great, all the flavours paired together on the plate worked impeccably well together. The ricotta hot cakes were some of the best executed we have had in the past, a very rich dish with ricotta throughout the batter mix, the honey butter which topped it all off complemented it perfectly and made for a very filling and gourmand breakfast. By the time we were ready to leave, the venue had become bustling with customers and we were thankful to have come in early. We had an overall great experience at Sassafras, and we would highly recommend it for a delicious breakfast, though be sure to get in early or book your table to avoid crowds on a weekend. Great spot for brunch! They have a lovely back-yard garden and great offer of cold drink. Their food is the best. They’s full of flavour and tasty. Their coffee is also amazing, perfect temperature. The cold drink range is worth a try as well. Their funky shakes and fresh cold-pressed juice are impressive, not prepacked like other cafes. Attentive and friendly customer service! Every time we come to Brisbane we look to stay in paddington and brunch here has quickly become a staple of our trip. The staff are always friendly and accommodating and the food is delicious and well presented. We love this beautiful dog friendly cafe in the heart of Paddington. It’s been our go to (even as vegans) since we moved to Brissy 5 years ago. Staff are always lovely and the atmosphere is always great!!!

Love the atmosphere here. They have plenty of seats in the outdoor area, which is quite nice in the morning. The food & coffee are very good as well. We’ve had a few dishes from the menu & they’re all freshly made and tasty. Sassafras is a cute little hole in the wall feel. The hustle bustle almost reminds you of a truck stop diner but the food is absolutely top tear. The only reason this wasn't 5 stars is because the service was subpar. To their defense it was a peak brunch hour on Saturday however; we never got served water and we asked for additional condiments and they never came (we asked someone else and they came that time) The chi was watery and the chocolate drink had ice for some reason. The food was sooo good though Overall it was a good experience and we will be coming back

Really great cafe! Unbelievable. You're not going to believe how great this cafe is. We walked in here and said: 'This place is great!' The food is excellent. Really, you need to try it. This is the standout. We brought our puppy, and we weren't sure if it would be good. But it was great, I said : " they give her the puppicino, she drinks it." You're not going to believe how good the puppicino is.

Have always enjoyed my time at Sassafras and think it is a really beautiful cafe. However, the last few visits have been painstakingly slow to be seated, served and fed. We went last weekend and it took almost 90 minutes (not joking) to order banana bread and the corn fritters. Seems there is little communication between staff members as we were waiting to be seated and no one came to help for at least 5 minutes, nor when we tried to get anyone's attention to take our order. I watched about 10 groups waiting to be seated with a line out the door in the rain who waited at least 10-15 minutes. Understand it's busy but communicating that would have been helpful or even taking their number and calling when free if there were no seats for a while. Eventually we were served and offered drinks and I had asked if the waitress could come back in 2 minutes so I could decide on the meal. It wasn't for another 20 at least before my partner went to the counter to ask to order. The dishes then took another 20 at least before they were delivered. When paying, no one asked how our food was or apologized for the delay. Overall the food was ok.

I Have very mixed reviews about this place. Upon arrival we were asked if we wanted to sit outside or inside and there was plenty of seating everywhere which is very nice and easy to choose a place. We were seated outside and quickly realised that the garden we were placed next to had an odd smell that turned you off wanting to eat. Not sure if it was the neighbouring place next door or sense it was a dog friendly cafe, the garden was starting to smell a lot (if you know what I mean). We were asked to order online which seemed like a quick, easy idea but soon came to realise that the app/website wouldn’t let my brother in law order and pay and it also staggered our meals coming out even though we all ordered within 2 mins of each other. My husband had finished his meal by the time I got mine and I then waited for my brother in laws food (he ordered the same thing as me) but it came out relatively later than mine. I also was not impressed with how over priced everything seems to be. My eggs Benedict was nearly $20 and I had to pay an extra $5.50 to add anything else onto it. My eggs weren’t cooked and the hollandaise was not very enjoyable. All together our experience was not terrible and it is a lovely atmosphere. I do like how they are prepared with seating if they are to get busy. But we also hardly saw any staff around unless they were bringing food out so it was hard to ask for cutlery/napkins. Very welcoming place and I definitely do not want to make it sound terrible because it’s not but there are a few aspects that I think could be improved.

Very cool venue with nice garden area at the back. This cosy cafe has much to offer. In my brekkie experience, the coffee was “great” and the breakfast itself was “good”. The only downside, was that I didn’t find my water glass properly cleaned: I found clear lipstick stains on my glass. Other than that, and having all things considered, I give this place a 4-star rating. In addition, they’re on the entertainment book, for which if you’re a member, you can get a deal of 25% off your total bill.

For old-fashioned friendly service and fresh food, you won't be disappointed. Located in trendy Paddington, there's a garden area out back, that's peaceful and private. Dogs are allowed. The ambience is comfortable and restful, where you're surrounded by the background chatter of the many other patrons. The food is made in the cafe's kitchen. Very tasty and fresh, especially the pastry sausage rolls. A lunch of burger, beer and chips for $20 is great value. Food is served with a smile and patrons are welcomed cheerfully. Recommended.

My husband and I love hitting local, non touristy places. Sassafras fit the bill 10x over. We went for a traditional Australian brekky and it was so so good! My husband had the famous ricotta hot cakes along with 2 eggs and bacon while I had the eggs on toast with bacon and avocado. We shared the hash brown. We both loved our dishes and I especially loved my house relish!! I wanted to take some home. Sassafras was perfection. We highly recommend.

After a relatively bad experience. We decided to give it another go after the owner and I had exchanged a few emails. Here are some updates. The second time around, the service was okay but there was still room for improvements. Also, instead of paper-based menu, we were introduced to their new online ordering system, which was straightforward and easy to read. The menu was alright, we ordered a smoked mushroom and eggplant with 2 coffees and one slice of cheesecake. My partner added a hash brown to his smoked mushroom and I added a poached egg and a serving of hollandaise on the side. I did wish there had been more options on the menu. I thought the smoked eggplant was really beautiful and so tasty. It is a very tricky ingredient to work with but they really nailed it. It wasn’t undercooked and was very flavorful. It wasn’t mushy either. It still held its shape and the texture remained. Not too salty either, which I really appreciated. And the pomegranate scattered on top was a really good idea. It really spiced up the whole dish. In general, that dish was executed really well. As for the smoked mushroom, my partner really loved it. I had a little bit of the dish and thought it was nice. I specially liked the sourdough and thought it tasted really organic, the feeling you get when you have real sourdough. The tangy sensation. He also really appreciated the fact that the mushrooms were smoked for real instead of liquid smoke, which gave it a natural and very faint smoky taste to it. There were other dishes I would like to try next time we go, the corn fritters and hot cakes. I didn’t order the corn fritters as the pic on the menu threw me off a bit and didn’t look as nice as the real thing. So I missed the chance. The hash brown was just gorgeous, prob the best I have ever had. It came out really fresh and crispy and in a fairly good portion.It wasn’t too greasy either, which I really loved. And it was seasoned just right. The cheesecake was heavenly. I am a big fan of baked cheesecakes and I thought it was really well done. The rhubarb was a really nice touch and elevated the flavor and taste of the cake. The cake was light and not overly sweet. The skinny cappuccino I ordered was awesome. I LOVED the chocolate on top. I was actually a bit disappointed when it was served at first because I didn’t see any real chocolate until I had the first sip. Oh man, that was prob one the best skinny caps I have had. In general, it was a pleasant experience and we really enjoyed the food and coffee. We would love to come back again to try other dishes on the menu.

Had a lovely breakfast with my friend here this morning. We were greeted by lovely, chatty staff (especially the friendly Czech waitress!). The food was impeccable and we got to sit outside in the garden cafe. Would go back again!

Had a meal with a friend on a Tuesday during school holidays just prior to 12pm. We did try to book ahead however, at the time, bookings were only being made for 4 plus people. We were seated within 5-10 mins. Areas we saw were clean and dining experience is more casual. Parking nearby can be a hit and miss. Food was delicious and all dietary requirements catered for without any concerns. It was so good that I neglected to take a picture. We sat outside. It is shaded and undercover. I don't mind the warmth of a day however if you are looking for a much cooler experience, maybe try indoors. Staff were friendly and accommodating. I will go back again as it was a very nice atmosphere when we went.

I went to Sassafras because it was recommended as a place that you could work at. The staff are friendly, but there are periods where they're clearly overworked. Having said that, my food wasn't slow coming out (mid-morning on a weekday). However, the food is very average, nothing that you couldn't do better at home for a third of the price. If they're going to charge what they do they need to justify it with more than overpoached eggs and dry toast. The atmosphere is fine, but nothing particularly special. I will say that the chai is delicious.

Have eaten here a few times, dogs allowed, coffee is good. The best thing on the menu is the carrot cake!! Service varies a bit and so does the consistency of the food, but can't really complain, the $20 lunch deal is good value and servings are quite generous. If you aren't happy, staff is normally ready to make it right.

I raised a minor issue with the manager Chris and he went so far out of his way to fix it, it was seriously amazing. This place has to be one of the best places to have breakfast lunch or dinner, its dog friendly and is the only place I know of that provides the best treats ever for dogs. The staff here are super friendly and polite, always making sure that customer satisfaction is the highest quality and priority. The food here is to die for and I personally recommend the pork belly burger its absolutely delicious, the pork belly is always super tender and juicy and the portion sizes are always plentiful. If your in the mood for a milkshake that will change your life I recommend there decedent chocolate milkshakes absolutely dreamy or if you like a glass of wine or a beer or cider they have plenty to choose from.

I went to Sassafras after a long hiatus (I had moved out of the area) and I was delighted by the changes. It was even better than before! I had the Vietnamese noodle salad- the dressing was amazing. A chai latte, which was one of the best chais I'd had in a while. The right amount of spicy to sweet. And an oat muffin which was wholesome yet delicious. They seem to strike a great balance between food that tastes healthy and nourishing while also being mouth-wateringly good. Very impressed!

Sad but true - I am in love with a cafe! Sassafras is a fave on mine for business meetings during the week - and breakfast with hubby on the weekend. They serve breakfast until 2pm - which I love! The atmosphere is always very chilled and eclectic - which I love. They have just started serving Single Origin Roasters - my favourite coffee from Sydney - found at places like Bills, The Book Kitchen in Surry Hills, Bourke Street Bakery, Sonoma Bakery, Three Blue Ducks, etc. Definitely worth a try!

My first time at Sassafras was this last Thursday and the second time was just now! :) I had to come again as after living in Brisbane for two and a half years I've come to appreciate the rare places that you find only once every few months, my only main complaint be that the name of the place is hard to spell and read :) On top of what I rated already, I have to ask "JOHN" from the 25.1.12 to please present the facts to the reads here namely, pointing us to the a documented allegation of the family on this place and describing the things you didn't want to go into (strange enough) as I suspect the hidden agenda is quite obvious to me as a reader. Moreover, it is difficult to pin-point exactly from where once contracted Salmonella, other than a "gut feeling". To the owners I say, I hope these bad reviews will not affect your business, as it is really a good venue. My only personal request for this place, is to try and make sure the Vegan options that exist on the menu are available everyday, as this was not the case today. This has basically led us to the point that we will have to call before we come next time, to make sure they are available. P.S The only reason I have a 2/3 for service is that one of the people which I ordered from didn't know which Salads were Vegan (which means she requires a bit more training on how things are prepared in the kitchen).

It is often difficult to find the magic combination of good food,ambiance and service but stop searching Sassafras has it all " in spades".
