Unfortunately missed out on the mains, the kitchen closes around 2:30pm although it doesn’t state it anywhere, so only what’s on display in the windows is available to eat, we had a lamb sausage roll and the scones. The sausage roll was quite large with a good amount of filling. The staff were friendly but it would be good if when people arrived after 2:30 they advised the kitchen was closed as we saw multiple people taking a while to decide on their mains then go to order and find out they’re no longer serving. Otherwise, it’s clean and good food and there are plenty of seating options both inside and outside, would recommend it for a pit stop whilst browsing the gallery or if nearby.

Very tasty food and quick service. We ordered Pumpkin bowl with smoked trout and Salmon sandwich. Both were delicious and filling. Will definitely recommend. Polite staff.

Got a seat on a busy Easter weekend! The way the QR code works for ordering is truly efficient. If you're bringing your family bring wads of cash stashed in your digital compiler. Food isn't exactly generous but does have some semblance to flavour. Although on second thought the use of frozen pizza and a deep fryer seems a bit slack for a place that's meant to be a premier venue for the nation of Australia. Wonderful view of the High Court and the grounds around Lake Burley Griffin, well kempt and nice on a sunshine early winters Canberra day.

Great cafe with great food and drinks. They have a good range of options depending on your tastes. Had breakfast here and it was quality food served by great staff. Highly recommend if you are going to the Portrait Gallery or in the area. Note that there is a 10% surcharge for Sunday.

Lovely cafe with indoor and outdoor seating. It is an order and pay at the counter affair and the queue can be quite long. There were some delicious looking pies, quiches and pastries with vegan/vegetarian options. The coffee is ok - not great but the staff seem friendly and helpful. My fruit salad and vegan yogurt was very tasty.
I’ve been back with a bigger appetite recently after a lake walk and my pumpkin and goats cheese tart was delicious. The lentil and carrot soup was also good according to a fellow walker. I love that the Portrait Gallery gift shop is so close though could be dangerous if you don’t want to spend. I did come away with a few gifts. 💕🌸💕

This is a lovely casual venue, with seating inside and out. The service was good and tables were mostly well spaced. However, on this occasion I found my meal of quiche and salad disappointing. The quiche was bland, although the pastry was fine. The salad, although plentiful and fresh was undressed.
Since the above review was posted the National Portrait Gallery Cafe manager responded. I appreciated this, and shall certainly give the cafe another chance.

Lovely coffee and cake after a morning seeing Shakespeare to Winehouse: Icons from the National Portrait Gallery, London

Lovely spot for a quiet coffee, morning tea, brunch or lunch. Good menu that caters to all kinds of dietary requirements and tastes. Always has a happy buzz of activity about it.

The view of the surrounding area is lovely, if you can get an outdoor table on a sunny day. The food is simple but fresh. The kitchen closes before the main cafe so, after 3pm you're limited to what's available in the front cabinets. This is pies, pastries and toasties. The sweets are available too. The service is quick and friendly. The prices are expensive though. I suppose that without much competition in the area, they can change what they like.

Pleasant cafe in the wonderful Portrait Gallery. A little quieter than the rush and bustle of the main National Gallery, Portrait Cafe offers a faulty basic but well prepared faire for lunch and coffee.
Staff were friendly and the setting is nice, although the long queue to get served can be a little slow. Prices were reasonable and the view from the balcony is lovely.
M. A. A.
Grey selection of drinks and food. Staff are so nice and friendly too. Good regular spot.
G. D.
Modern decor with outside seating plenty of breakfast and lunch options though servings are on the small side if your hungry enjoy a glass of wine at reasonable price
D. K. O.
Always great coffee
Always a good selection of GF foods.
Well done guys.
G. D.
Ok,.
We arrived just after opening on a Saturday morning and the coffee and Ice Coffee were both very average quality for the price similar to the average McCafe in quality.
T. G.
Reasonable pricing and a lovely quiet but scenic position make this a great spot to enjoy brunch or lunch. Service was rapid and friendly and the baked eggs and eggs benny were excellent!
M. D.
Good coffees but highly overpriced food ... $12 for a sandwich with single slices of cheese and ham is just ridiculous
O. G.
Really good food and service. Price is reasonable too. Highly recommend this place
G. G.
It needs our support after months of lockdown.
A truly great venue.

Amazing choice of food, it was very good too. Not enough tables to cope with the huge number of people who walked over from the Botticelli exhibition, nor enough staff (who were doing a great job coping). Some of the reviews here clearly show that many people haven’t been to many other gallery/museum cafes, most of which are nowhere near as good.

Very popular spot, bacon and egg roll was excellent, coffee was good, doing their best with limited space
D. C.
Delicious steak sandwich and coffee. Quick and friendly service.
Happy new year!

Bad acoustic in the cafe, echo and chairs screeching against the polished floor. If only staff knew what it sounds like to a patron who's trying to eat a meal and have a coffee in peace. Not bad food, but menu can be quite inflexible, won't even consider swapping out salad for chips. Not the best value for your money in a climate of lacking tourists, perhaps they need consider treating the locals better as they will come back if they like it.

Food was fresh and enjoyable. The service once ordered was abysmal. Huge number of staff, poorly organised and in need of focus and a Supervisor to sort priorities. Food orders prepared sat for far too long lined up on back bench behind counter... going nowhere! Hot food was getting cold as not served to tables. Was a sight to behold. Shame ... as cafe has a lot going for it. Need to get staff sorted asap for a much improved experience.
J. R.
Nice cafe style food, but if you're going on a winter weekend and want a seat inside, make sure you book ahead. It's not a big cafe and there can be groups of people hovering for a vacant table.
S. B.
Good menu and some outside seating.
J. D.
Great food and really friendly staff.
N. K.
Good cafe and a good place to sit down.
N. R.
This place is always bustling, today had the chicken pot pies and they were absolutely lovely. Only criticism is you can only book a table from the day before. I was unable to make a reservation for same day.
A. L.
My sister and I popped in at about 1:30pm for a late lunch after visiting the National Gallery of Australia across the road. There was a good range of meal options, prices were very reasonable and the service was lovely. Social distancing requirements were being adhered to and sanitiser was readily available. As it's local, I'll be back soon to spend more time in the book shop next door (and visit the cafe).

Despite being super busy on the long weekend, I was really impressed by the staff's ability to keep cool, help everyone, and keep their serving time under 10 minutes. The coffee was good and everything was clean despite the number of people. It was a bit noisy inside, but that was to be expected. Also very impressed that they were able to keep it so warm.

Asked the barista for a replacement bottle of water as the bottled water table was empty When he just pointed off into the distance and said over there. I told him on finding a replacement bottle that i thought he was rude and he said I’m just too busy making coffee. I told him that I had paid for my lunch and he was there to do a job. I was truly shocked with his rudeness ‼️
S. B.
Very nice looking Cafe with friendly staff. A wide range of pastries and cakes. However, mildly disappointing that whole hazelnuts are found in abundance in the choc brownies
V. C.
One of my favourite cafes. An easy pay at the counter system and friendly, efficient staff. I'm very fussy about my coffee as I drink it black, and it's some of the best I've had in Canberra. I also love the fresh, homemade pies and sausage rolls with salad, which makes for a reasonably priced lunch. A great selection of cakes too.
C. B.
Good range of food and drinks. Coffee is always good.
Nice selection of pies and cakes. All at reasonable prices.
Indoor and outdoor seating, nice views outside.
J. G.
Great Sunday brunch of bacon and eggs and pancakes (these were particularly nice). This after a circuit around Lake Burley Griffin. A quiet stroll round the gallery after.
L. H.
We arrived from Perth WA late last night, came to the portrait gallery for lunch and all four of us had fabulous meals, coffees and cakes. Pleasant staff and outlook
We sat outside -it was lovely. Highly recommend it
R. S.
We come to this cafe for lunch every Saturday. The service is friendly and efficient and the food is reasonably priced but first class.the menu has continuing favourites but also specials that are invariably inventive and delicious. You can't beat the strong short black coffee.
I. J.
Great coffee and friendly staff. Would definitely go again. Sunday morning had a nice mix of people out for walks, some dog walkers and sporty bike riding types stopped for some respite.
J. C.
Pretty good meals. You can get some snacks here too. On crowded days it'll be hard to get a seat.

Busy ! Easy table ordering.
L. S.
One of the several good cafes in the Parliamentary Triangle, good views from the North facing verandah. Ordering at the counter a bit of a hassle but otherwise the service is good. Nice bar if you want to commune with your PC or phone while charging and using WiFi
G. H.
Nice selection of cafe food and drink, excellent coffee. Plenty of friendly and efficient staff. Variety of seating inside and out for large and small groups.
B. P.
Great service, friendly staff very good breakfast roll and tasty coffee.
S. G.
Great food & friendly staff!
T. C.
Very busy place, food looks better than it tastes, all needed more seasoning and flavour, and that's from six of us. Cakes look fantastic, but all were dry and not fresh, so that was disappointing.
S. A.
Yeah, it's busy because it's soooo good. Great coffee. Great food. OMG, if you are into it, try the meat pie for lunch. Service is good despite the pressure of its popularity. Lovely view from the verandah.
J. M.
I really love this place for a coffee. They have bite sized treats...if one doesn't want to fully indulge. 🤗
J. T.
Delicious food and friendly and helpful staff. The prices were reasonable too.
A. N.
A nice clean café. It's expensive but you are paying for the Quality. I was surprised to see a café with that many fresh items. (Almost all). Would've given 5 stars if the prices were competitive.
J. W.
nice spot for a coffee and view of LBG

This is one of my favourite cafés. Located in the National Portrait Gallery, it serves consistent good quality food and drinks. Serv I ce is efficient and quick. The outside area can be cool and windy in winter, sunny and hot in summer, but in autumn and spring it's wonderful. I'm not rapt with the new online ordering system. I like to look at the food and talk to people.
