Comments of The Pondering Frog

Oh my gosh. Pet friendly donation camping, use of cafe toilets during business hours, access to taps to refill water, and amazing meals. Beautiful spot and incredibly lovely staff. Highly recommend.
R. S.
The Pondering Frog was such a lovely place to stop in at. The service was incredible and the food was delicious. The people were very friendly and accommodating and gave us some hot tips on where to go next with some maps and brochures to lead the way. There is an excellent playground for the kids to enjoy while you’re there. If you need somewhere to stay the night there is a RV stop over too.
A.
Stopped by this lovely cafe in the afternoon for some ice cream and the staff there were so friendly. Picked the chocolate and almond ice cream sandwich and my partner got the berry chocolate coated ice cream. Really quaint place to relax and enjoy the cool breeze
D. W.
Very busy cafe which is nearly always open even on public holidays. Service is friendly & fast. Have some great frog displays throughout the cafe, very cute. Plenty of seating inside & out
y. w.
Absolutely loved this place...highly recommend and will be recommending to all my customers that are travelling to the east coast ( I work in tourism )
Food was amazing 👏
F. C.
Good food served up with a slice of humour.
'Try the Food and Brew' tonight.
'What do you recommend?' I asked.
'Just walking in the door would be a good start'.
Boom boom.
The beef pie was excellent and I hear the steak sandwich is very good.
Recommended.

Lovely HUGE old school ice creams with solid flavours (we had peanut butter and the choc mint). Enjoyed a chat with the owner and he made us giggle. Will def drop by again if we're in the area!
D. H.
This place is a treasure. Run by locals who are proud of what they do and remain true to their recipes and flavours. Their fresh oysters are to die for, the seafood chowder is their signature dish and you should definitely try the curried scallop pie. If you want trendy cafe setup and Santos coffee, keep driving. If you want a lazy afternoon with a lovely view, room for the kids to run and play, delicious and unusual seafood fare, down to earth hosts who are a bit like your grandparents and super interesting ice cream flavours, stop in and enjoy. We loved it.
G. T.
Great service - Lester was extremely helpful with the information he provided of the area. Ice creams and sundaes were great. Is a good place to stop in and ponder a little. The second day, we saw the llama and goats that would amuse the littlies. Great stop to stretch your legs and have a bite to eat.
H. X.
We stopped there to have a quick lunch on the bus tour. Service is average as the owner seems quite stressed when facing the long queue and not a pretty pleasant experience. The ice cream was good. The frogs' displays are cute.
There are plenty of seats inside and out. It's relaxing sitting outside and watching some animals wandering around.
A. P.
My partner and I stopped in at The Pondering Frog for a boysenberry ice cream. 10/10 for the boysenberry. Really good service as well. Lester (one of the owners) was such a top bloke helping us plan our East Coast trip. I highly recommend stopping at this place. We will be back!
M. D.
Love love love this place, delicious Devonshire tea. And the owners are a wealth of local knowledge. Definitely worth the stop. Great for kids to have a run around and play!
R. L.
The man who runs the pondering frog was born to work in hospitality. We stopped here for a coffee on our cycling trip and he gave us such detailed advice for the rest of our trip. It was so useful, and the coffee hit the spot as well. Cannot recommend calling in here more.
V. R.
Very friendly and helpful staff.
Good coffee and yummy ice cream
S. C.
Great pit stop for your travels up the east coast. Seafood chowder a must! Owned and run by a super friendly local with lots of great advice for our stay in Coles Bay and beyond. Love this kind of Aussie small town hospitality.
R. M.
Wonderful place. The couple that own the cafe very friendly and helpful with directions and what things to do. Breakfast was delicious, real home cooking. Please stop there and sign the visitors book.
D. S.
It was a lovely place to stop in at, especially with little kids. The food was delicious. Affogato was the best one I ever had. Portions were big.
The serving platter for garlic rice was difficult to eat out of, would recommend serving on a plate like pesto pasta.
I would advise putting the toys higher up in the store because the kids kept on grabbing it.
Icecream with nuts on the outside would be even better.
K. W.
This is a great place to stop. They stayed open to wait for us and the food was delicious and quick. They also gave recommendations and maps on what to see on our journey. Very generous meals and great prices.
W. L.
Our Bushtracker caravan owners group held its annual Tasmanian Mini-Muster at the Pondering Frog recently. Lester and Colette treated us royally. We really enjoyed the food, drinks and icecream. The campground was clean, well maintained and quiet (even though it's beside the main road). The campground is well-placed to tour the local area. Thoroughly recommend!
D. H.
Fantastic place with home made icecream to die for. The host is very jovial and chatty and knows the area like the back of his hand. He'll tell you where to stay where to go best things to do. Only a short drive from Bicheno.
郭.
The food is so so so so good. We ordered almost everything on the menu, and loved it ALL. Seriously. The food tastes so good that i feel as if i am on drugs. My stomach is currently so full and near bursting. 11/10 recommend.
r. K.
Relaxing location and good food, still gets 5 stars even with ‘Grump’ serving but it was just after christmas! Actually he’s got an awesomely dry sense of humour. Very family friendly.
C. O.
A truely unique little cafe with amazing home-made icecream! Perfect place to stop in for a quick break and the owner was hilarious to chat to (very helpful in his own quirky way). Well worth it!
A. L.
Amazing ice cream here! Hot food are delicious!
G. E.
The curry scallop pie is fantastic. Plus advice on all the tours, tracks and lookouts in the region. Best place to stop for that quick lunchtime bite.
Food and knowledge
T.
All 3 staff members that we spoke to were lovely. Coffee and food came out quickly and was of good quality. Would recommend stopping in if you’re out that way.
C. H.
Stopped in for a coffee and possibly the best toasted sandwiches of our lives! Lester and his wife were absolutely accommodating and provided an extensive guide to the local area, could not recommend this quirky and cool place highly enough!
P. A.
Friendly from the moment I walked in. Had the seafood chowder which I was told was world famous, I can only back this up it was ripping. Definitely a place to stop on your journey.
F. J.
This a very lovely place to drop by for a quick snack and coffee or tea. I never expected this restaurant will serve quality food. The steak sandwich has a lot of punchy flavour, the chicken burger has Chutney in it and the ham cheese tomato toastie is freshly made and we really enjoyed it. The owner is a nice bloke and even gave us an idea where to have a good view of wineglass Bay Area. We came back with plenty of time in his shop to buy variety of jam. Make sure you visit the pondering frog for a nice lunch and coffee. This is a must.
M. M.
Stopped in for an icecream on the way back from the National Park. Absolutely phenomenal service offering great ideas for places to visit on our trip, not to mention the delicious food on offer. Could not recommend highly enough!
K. C.
What a lucky find! Definitely stop at the Pondering Frog! The food is great, the icecream delicious and better yet the owners are friendly and knowledgeable! If nothing else, stop in to see Lester and get some travelling tips!
S. A.
Try their banana split ice cream. We stopped on our way to Hobart from bicheno for a ice cream and pleasantly surprised.
Great local tips from the Grandma at the shop also!
G.
Great place to stop for ice cream or for lunch. All fresh handmade ice cream - yummy! The peanut butter choc top was huge, and delicious. The cherry ice cream in a cup was also amazing and fresh.
Lots of food options available, indoor and outdoor terrace seating.
J. J.
Amazing service, warm and cosy atmosphere and the best homemade ice cream ever! Had the raspberry chocolate coated ice cream and the hubby had the mint sandwich and they were both amazing.
The owner popped over and gave us a great run down of the area which was informative and comical at the same time.
Would absolutely recommend this place if your passing by!
C. Y.
Seafood Chowder, best one I have tasted outside San Fran. The rest were just average but still tasty. Warm and friendly staff!
B. D.
The 5 of us stumbled on this little Oasis on our road trip around Tassie and stopped because of its peculiar name and seafood chowder. Service was quick and friendly.
Good we did, as following our delicious generous chowder and sour dough meal Lester spent time giving us a comical overview of places of intetest which he mapped out for us on a "paper map". The internet went down over Tassie and it got us to Bay of Fires the old fashioned way.
Thank you Lester.
K. A.
You have to come here! The first time I’ve said this in the hundreds of places I’ve visited in so many parts of the world. The food the service the advice the location, the value for money and on it goes. Just make sure you stop. If you’re in an RV there is a separate parking area to stay for a day or three. This place is on the doorstep of some of the most spectacular places on the planet. Do yourself a favour and stop here.
h. w.
A Quirky great roadside Cafe!
Do stop!!
J. S.
Stop by here!!! The customer service was excellent, food was delicious and they catered for my gluten free really well. The atmosphere was delightful and it’d be a great place to take kids. Plus the ice cream was delicious. We absolutely loved the character and life of the place and getting to know the owner was an added bonus.
I’d highly recommend stopping off here.
J. L.
The owners are warm and welcoming. The seafood chowder is highly recommended especially on a cold day. Remember to save some space for their homemade ice-cream. Yumz.
R. E. c.
This would have to be one of my favourite stops on the East Coast of Tasmania.
I first came across these wonderful people in 2014 when they had there small but delicious Ice-cream shop operating, this being our 3 rd or 4th time passing though and Wow,... how things have changed it seems many others have experienced the wonderful warm service an amazing food that I once did and as a result they have expanded to a more then double their originally size .
My partner and I simply cannot drive passed without grabbing an ice-cream or thick shake or some hot food .
There ice-cream is made on site and there is a few great flavours to choose from .
They have also added a great kids playground for the little ones and a big indoor eating space .
There is a really cool live bee hive to observe in dining area where bees enter via wall into a clear pipe and make there way into Perspex honey box it’s a great display for the kids and adults there is also a book on bees there to read also .
A. N.
I’ve just been there! Ice cream is lovely!
Flavour options are: berry, vanilla, chocolate, peanut butter, mango, banana split for the cones. It can be chocolate coated or not. Sizes: junior or regular.
The one in the picture is regular size (super big) I actually couldn’t finish mine! But its really tasty.
There’s also a variety of ice cream sandwiches and cups which I don’t remember!
Service is very fast as they have pre-made cones in the freezer, which at first I found very surprising! but after a while sitting there the shop was so FULL that I understood it would be impossible to serve everyone so quick if having to coat each ice cream in the moment.
Anyways taste is fresh so I think they probably prepare them in the day.
Staff is friendly.
Big gardens and some goaties around. Playground for kids. Little shop with local products and souvenirs.
P. L.
Worth the trip just for the calamari salad and chips. The burger with the lot and chips was also well worth it. Good coffee and clean premises added to the experience. The beehive display was educational and interesting. The owners, who incidentally owned the Jam Factory in Young NSW were friendly and ready for a chat. Highly recommended.
C. T.
Glad we dropped by for lunch before driving to the city. Food is good, excellent customer service. Love the banana split that I had. They have mains and ice cream, and sell some jams and Tasmanian souvenirs too.
Parking site is well maintained with a mini garden (with working bees, how cute!). There's a small farm just beside with an alpaca (lovely!). RV parking available too.
R. R.
The quaintest stop ever.. Restaurant, souvenir shop, playground, patting animal attraction all rolled into one! There is something for everyone. The owners are awesome! Even suggested to us places to visit along our journey. The seafood chowder with garlic bread is a must try!! Oh... We finished 2 bowls between my wife and I
M. A.
What great place😍, congratulations on so many aspects, atmosphere, customer service, the menu, different seating areas and awesome outside space too, take a look at the photos and you will see what we mean, if you’re travelling with a caravan you can stay ( Donation) in hook and go to the national park without your van, we would come back here for sure. 👌
A. B.
A must stop on your Tassie road trip! Lester was so welcoming and had so much great advice about what to do in Tassie, when and how. We had the pies and done milkshakes and they were fantastic. The ice cream was also generous and delicious, especially the ginger one. We enjoyed them while hanging out with the goats.
M. M.
Uncle Lester will give you a warm welcome ! Despite being located in middle of 2 big eat outs and cellar, uncle Lester and his partner (wife probably) have a long way to go, stunning food by the lady, very good oysters, he pampered me like princess!! I even got special finger bowl. Customer experience at top notch stage, we were so busy eating that we didn't take enough pictures :( but we ordered chicken cheese and tomato chutney sandwich garlic bread and oysters and plates went back shining white!! Special 6stars to The pondering frog 🥰🥰
K. K.
Hands down best ice cream I’ve ever tasted. Had the berry ice cream. It actually tasted like it was made with fruit too! Excellent quality.
Great chatting to Lester who gave me some recommendations around where to go and what to see while I’m in Tasmania - visiting from WA. If you’re reading this, thanks so much Lester. Really good chatting to you!
L. S.
Amazing cafe to have a quick pitstop to stretch lengs when you are on a road trip! Kids can freely play while Mommy and Daddy enjoy a coffee...
A. P.
Stumbled upon this place while zooming past at 110km/hr. We noticed so many people turning into this mystery spot so we had to U turn to check it out
Well worth it! This place makes some seriously great ice cream. Extremely generous serves dipped in loads of chocolate. Almost too much chocolate. The mixed berry seems to be their signature flavour as everyone was choosing that, no regrets as it was to die for.
Choc mint was also very good, but avoid chocolate dipped ice cream sandwiches, it was better with plain waffles.
Overall super glad we stopped by the pondering frog!
a.
Great coffee and friendly smiles to greet. Stopped off on my ride between towns for a coffee and a sweet treat. Definitely won’t be my last visit.
L. T.
Quality food and drinks - got a great toasted sandwich, great gluten free breakfast roll and chai latte takeaway. Would definitely stop in again.
D. S.
We just happened to stop here for lunch and were glad we did. The staff are so friendly and the food was fantastic and quick! There's really nice outdoor seating where you can listen to the frogs and watch the resident goats and llama from the deck. We will be stopping again the next time we're in the area!
G. O. C.
Amazing food, salad and curry delicious
Handmade banana ice cream so yummy but the most attractive is the friendly and welcoming staff.
He gives you the best tips for you trip!
C.
After driving for three hours straight seeing this cafe was a relief. The staff there were entertaining. The food also blew me away. Despite looking simple, the taste was amazing. I do recommend this cafe after a long drive
J. N.
Do yourselves a favour and stop here, and if it’s at breakfast time make sure to grab a bacon & egg roll, you can thank me later!
Big thanks to Lester for sitting down with me and mapping out the walks we should do and warning me off Amos! Was glad to see it from your walls!
J. P.
I enjoyed going up the frogs lower back slowly and then sliding down the tounge. 10/10. Best slide ever.
S.
Lovely staff. Casual atmosphere.
Food is good. Had breakfast, can't go wrong.
M. D.
Gorgeous stop on the side of the road, good value meals and the berry choc top ice cream was the best way to finish off while petting the cute baby goats!!! This place has an awesome working bee display too. Sitting outside in the sun enjoying the ice cream and the farm view was awesome.
A. C.
Lester and Collete are great hosts! Great food and very family orientated. Great for family and kids.😆
I. R.
Great little spot. We went in for breakfast and were one of only a few other people. Super friendly staff and had a lovely man give us a map of the area with some highlights for us to visit, tailored to our itinerary. Great food and coffee, definitely recommend as a spot to stop in to if you’re nearby.
D. J.
Oh my god! What an amazing place.
Stopped here before 8am because we needed a coffee. When we walked out we felt so happy and glad we stopped here, since we didn't just get a coffee.
Lester welcomed us immediately, he was super friendly and started a conversation about our travels. He gave us lots of helpful recommendations. Then he told us about his business and his background and in the end we could even feed 2 goats 😍
J. W.
Beautiful meal, friendly staff, lovely playground, and of course some gorgeous frogs for sale. Oh and excellent ice cream
C. Y.
Stopped by for a snack on the way from Wineglass Bay to Hobart. This is a lovely frog-theme cafe. Wonderful seafood chowder and friendly staff!

There is a young and handsome funny guy who own this place, his service was fabulous, great food and home made ice cream.
Must visit.
M. S.
Today's special, chocolate dipped peanut butter ice cream plus a regular, and always popular, berry blend. Last minute decision to stop here was a great one. Delicious homemade ice creams and the owners are super nice and friendly.
H. W.
Beautiful place to stop. Delicious food and drinks and great kids play area for them to stretch their legs

Pondering over whether to drop by this place for food? Hesitate no more as the food here is great! The place is manned by passionate people and had a pretty view of the farm animals.
W. d. O.
Fantastic food, friendly staffs and delicious ice cream.
K. M.
Nice coffee and very helpful owner, provided great advice for visiting local attractions. Many thanks! Also appreciated the RV friendly stopover for the night on the way to Freycinet NP. Looking at the photos, they have made lots of improvements to the place in the past few years. Keep up the good work :)
A. B.
Fantastic place 😀 friendly great icecream 🍦
L. S.
Magnificent food and very friendly atmosphere. Wonderful for kids too!
R. J.
Fun people run this place and really lovely food. Returned the next day for breakfast before heading home
M. T.
Nice cosy place to relax and enjoy your meal. There's children playground. Lots of frogs souvenirs and local produce.
J. E.
Stopped in for lunch and we all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. Highly recommended!
M.
What a great cafe/restaurant ! So clean and warm - and the owner is super friendly and helpful - can not fault anything ! We stocked up on homemade jams and relishes and a few sticks of fudge too !! Can not wait to enjoy our little stash we brought with us ! 100% would recommend stopping in for a bite to eat and a hot coffee when passing this little place !!
M. T.
The owners Les and his wife are engaging with a great sense of humor. Partner and I had a surprisingly awesome time at the cafe. Les' local knowledge helped shaped the rest of our travel decisions which we've been very thankful for and the food there is excellent with generous portions.
D. A.
Excellent food, great information from the host and for those who love frogs like me....fantastic
B. H.
Stopped for a coffee, it was ok. Friendly service. Kids enjoy playing in the playground.
D. S.
This place is the greatest!
Friendliest couple you'll find this side of Tasmania 🥰
Food was great, nice to sit out in the sub and let the kids enjoy the playground and check out the goats & Alpaca!
Of course, if you also like frogs, this place has you covered with adorable frog themed figurines and a great little gift shop.
Couldn't recommend it more!
E. M.
Such a beautiful place! Humble service, lovely interactions with the owners and alot of helpful guidance for directions and ideas for our road trip. Grateful for the experience and recommend it to anyone for a refreshing and encouraging start to their day! Food was fantastic too and quick!
V. G.
What an excellent place to take your family for a meal. Food was very fresh and good sized meals. Very friendly staff they were excellent. Play equipment for the children and very relaxing atmosphere. Yes we will go back again.
J. M.
Fantastic stopover to explore Bicheno, Swansea, Freycinet, Wineglass Bay and inland areas. Lester was very welcoming, provided excellent assistance and advice with touring planning and tourist brochures / maps which we found invaluable beyond our stay there. Lovely self contained RV area with water available and access to toilets whilst cafe open - all that is requested is a donation. We ate dinner in the cafe one night - the food was amazing and outlook from the back deck very relaxing (need to book for dinner during the afternoon but open for breakfast and lunch on a drop in basis). Highly recommend stop. Thank you Lester and all!
J. H.
Lovely and friendly people
G. H.
This is an excellent stopover location, we stopped for an icecream and stayed a few days in the park area.
A donation is all that is asked , good water supplied.
Excellent meals and everything you could ask for.
The owners Lester and Colette they are amazing hosts and nothing is a problem to them.
k. b.
Do yourself a favour and visit thus place. The surf turf hamburger and black forest milkshake is yummolicious. On the way out try their ice-cream.
A. T.
The owner is very stressed out and this was on display when he took my order. This unfortunately took away from my experience. Apart from that the food was good and view of the animals whilst eating breakfast was a nice touch.
M. W.
Toilet is clean. Good service. Food was delightful!
I’m happy with everything. I was so full that could not finish my chips!
A. B.
Service culture in Tasmania can sometimes feel a bit 80s. There is also the issue that every other place in Tas now considers itself 'foodie' and jacks up the prices. Neither of these are the case with the Pondering Frog, it's obvious that these guys put all their efforts into providing a quality service without being pretentious. The Frog was one of the few places open in Bicheno on a public holiday and after doing the Wineglass/Hazards beach walk on a stinking hot day, I will never forget the banana split I got from the frog afterwards. The only feedback I'd have for the guys is to get a professional designer to do their wall menus. The A4 pieces of paper are a bit hard to follow ;)
F. L.
Food was great! Especially the handmade icecream and the SEAFOOD CHOWDER. the chowder is a must-order! So so good! Sorry but not sorry that two of us cleaned the entire bowl.
V. R.
Stopped in to the pondering frog on our way though to St Helens. Wow!! Not only was the food incredible but the elderly gentleman serving came to our table and asked where we were headed, he then gave us a map and marked places of interest, he went as far as getting another map for the next stage of our trip and again marked out places to see. This information was invaluable as we would have driven past many of the sights he directed us to including the magnificent St Columba Falls. When we visit Tasmania again we will definitely be stopping by the The Pondering Frog again.
M. G.
Friendly service, generous ice cream portions, what more could you want?
D. G.
We love the fact that everything is homemade except for the coffee which is from pods. (I think this should be advised beforehand to avoid discontent from customers) we love also the customer service, the lady looking after the tables so lovely and friendly, the guy behind the counter a gentleman :). We ordered the seafood soup and the garlic prawns, sea food was fresh and good, but we had higher expectations in terms of flavour in the food, lack of it. The garlic cream was not enough garlicky for our taste and the seafood soup very simple. Homemade & fresh though. The cherry ice cream was good.
B. B.
Toast was well cooked, home made chutney was great. Frogs were great. Chicken pops were overpriced and underwhelming. How much would you price something you make? It’s as if you woke up and thought stuff it I can make that and then you make it and you go “oh yeah it’s alright” and you eat it and then that’s it.
Highlights: frog theme, chutney
Lowlights: some overpriced items,
In conclusion:
no other choice on the Highway unless you book in advance (beggars can’t be choosers) all in all a good experience but that’s about it.
K. S.
Staff, food and coffee were great. Highly recommend.
K. T.
Good for kids, lots of parking, friendly restaurant owners and they serve lots of selection of food too. Ice cream is really creamy, and tasty. Definitely must go 😊
J. D.
Great atmosphere. They've got animals, and the frog theme is spread throughout everywhere, from the motion sensor at the entryway, to the frog slide outside, to the various frog memorabilia you can buy inside.
For a pod coffee, it wasn't bad, but a proper cappuccino would have been nice.
The staff were nice, honest, and even let us know that we would be waiting a while for food because there was a group of 17 people who just turned up.
I resorted to getting a couple of pies, which weren't bad, but the pastry could have been better.
The main save of the place was the ice cream. I got a chocolate-topped banana split ice cream and it has to be one of the best ice creams I've ever had.
S. H.
Very interesting place. Great scallop pies
M. H.
What an amazing experience we had! The gentleman behind the counter was so attentive and helpful in recommending places to go and even the quickest/safest routes to drive! Delicious fresh ice cream and love the quirky frog decorations everywhere. If you are driving to/by Freycinet, you must stop here!
D. F.
Quirky. Great place. Great Coffee, Food & the best Ice Cream anywhere.
Exceptional staff, friendly & helpful.
J. M.
The location on the way back from wineglass bay is great, the staff were lovely and the food decent and well priced, however the man who I can only assume is the owner was very rude. I think he was trying to be funny but proceeded to tell me everything that was wrong with where I lived telling me that it was "awful, just awful, yuck". Sorry mate but you need to tone that down. Not great for customer relations or reviews.
c. b.
Owner has the best tourist advice and the smoothies and ice cream are the best
T. F.
Wow! Felt like home as soon as we walked in. Hubby said his egg and bacon roll was the best he’s ever had. The coffee was smooth and their scones were soo delicious. Stop for a bite to eat, but stay for the customer service!! And dont forget to take a little jar of some home made goodness with you on your way out. We chose the chutney 👌🏻
P. W.
Try the seafood chowder and a glass of devils corner. Won’t be dissapointed
Y. S.
A fabulous place to stay and visit the area, we had intended to move a bit closer to Freycinet but loved it here so stayed and scootered there instead.
The food is good and the chowder is full of seafood and a massive serve.
Lester, his wife and staff are all friendly. We would recommend staying here when you're in the area
J. F.
The icecream was good & the kids had a bit of fun on the playground but the old bloke behind the counter was just plain rude. While waiting for my wife to choose an icecream flavour I listened to him speak bluntly & rude to multiple customers before my wife received the same.
R. B.
Such great home made ice cream an friendly service
C. P.
Good food, service and great icecream.
S. A.
MASSIVE ice creams and great value for money!
J. B.
Amazing hospitality and delicious food! Will definitely come back.

Wonderful place to stay for 1 or more nights to do some great walks at Coles Bay. Hosts were extremely helpful and food was delicious. Sites are flat n water available. Must b self contained with grey water oked to go on the surrounding trees. Some bitumen and some grass sites. Would definitely recommend
L. M.
Drawn in by the free caravan parking...this place has become a jewel on the Great Eastern Drive, and these guys have worked so hard and deserve to do well! Excellent customer service ( a rarity nowadays) fantastic, icecream, great coffee ... what else could you want? Our Maremma loved sitting watching and guarding their animals ..he wants us to come back!! Big thumbs up, guys!

Lovely Place
Decided to stop here after a long drive and we are glad we did. The staff are wonderful, very welcoming and friendly. They have an extensive menu of hot food and lovely cakes and ice-cream. We had the scones with delicious berry jam. The outdoor area is so cute with the baby goats grazing below. Would highly recommend for a light meal and great country hospitality.
G. D.
Lester is a character, his wife is the chef! Drop in and say hello, have a Devonshire tea or some excellent seafood chowder. Food is great. Top place for a feed and a chin wag... will definitely call in next time in Tassie...
K. E.
We had the steak sandwich and chicken pesto pasta. Excellent. Was really nice and the staff were friendly and very helpful. Oh, and the glasses of wine were very generous too. Would have had another but had to drive. Would highly recommend the pondering frog.
M. D.
Love the ice cream and loved the friendly owner :0, helped us heaps. STOP and check this place out.
M. S.
Very nice ice cream, and great outdoors area with play stuff, and friendly goats and llama
D. C.
This quirky cafe is an experience worth stopping for. Have a meal on the balcony while goats and lamas graze nearby.
Great play area for kids and the staff were very friendly.
It seems to be a favourite with the locals.
Simple meals but a DIVERSE menu. Surf/turf/coffee and ice cream.
The Pondering Frog... what a winner!
J. M.
A very friendly chap runs this place ,he's definitely got the gift of the gab . Icecream was delicious. Good spot

C. M.
Great food, super friendly staff and very helpful.
F. M.
The owner is very friendly and helpfully. They sell also delicius honey. You can see inside the bar how bees are making honey. Beautifull!!
V. D.
Stopped for a break after a big day at Wineglass Bay. The owner of the place is an incredible wealth of knowledge of the area. Highly recommend the ice cream too!
C. P.
Beautiful breakfast ! Lovely place to stop . Clean facilities. Great playground. The host was friendly, warm and full of knowledge of the area and places to visit . He recommended a lot of beautiful places to visit
B. K.
Wonderful food, and fantastic service!
A. W. C.
I’ve been here twice on my way to and from Freycinet and was very impressed both by the food and by the staff. The owner is extremely gregarious and helpful. The vegetarian options are good and so is the ice cream. The coffee is not great but the cakes are!! I would go back over and over again. Especially after a long hike.
J. R.
What a great spot to stop relax and have something to eat. Very friendly staff gave lots of tourist information food was delicious and they are pet friendly
M.
Best banana bread ever and friendly staff 💫!
F. H.
So friendly and funny staff, lovely simple foods!
The guy who ran the place helped us out on where to go in wineglas bay.
Thank you so much, would definitely recommend this place!
S. N.
Lovely cafe, huge menu and selections and such friendly staff. We really enjoyed our morning there, the coffee was delicious and so was the food 👌
J. T.
We only came for the ice-cream. They were good. Don't know what the food is like.
N. D.
Their steak sandwich and beef burger were exactly what we needed after a long drive. A great feed. The man at the counter was also very friendly and helpful.
K. T.
Travelling though today hubby pulled in here, I was happy to have sandwiches in the van but the food sign caught his eyes. I eye rolled a bit and I must admit when we walked in I decided it wasn’t where I want to spend a lot of $. Within minutes the host Lester had greeted us, seated us and individually ‘sorted is out’. What I mean by this is, the kids were quietly bickering, I was over them but trying not to make a thing of it and hubby was over me and them plus he had just driven some windey roads in bad wind with the van on so he really needed a break. I don’t know how he did it but Lester identified all 4 of us had these little individual issues and without us realising in the moment just a few friendly words a smile had us all seated at the table happy again and ready for one of the best cafe lunches we have had in Tassy.
Lester you are a magician, the BLT, the wine the coffee the ice cream.. yum yum yum the subtle individual attitude adjustment ... WoW ... I need some pointers you are amazing!
A shame we couldn’t stay and use to free camp, it looked like a great set up.
We will be back and we will tell everyone!
Thank you!!
l. p.
Great service, beautiful atmosphere, yummy food, great disabled access and disabled toilets and lovely little souvenirs to buy as well. Loved it here.
S. D.
Very tasty ice cream, Lester also went out of his way to give us some very helpful trip recommendations while passing though the area.
M. R.
Very friendly greeting, unfortunately pod coffee only
s. s.
Loved this place, Lester served us and was just lovely with lots of helpful information on where to go to when we get to Hobart. Such a friendly helpful man. Our banana splits were so yummy. Very clean place with extensive menu.
P. G.
Awsome pleace to go definetly recommend stopping by and as a regular cosumer of ice cream they have the best tasting rasberry ice cream as well as the best spots to skinny dip at the near by camp grounds👍🏽
A. G.
Such a great gem in the middle of nowhere! Les and his cooks serve first class food with friendly customer service. Perfect place to stop and stretch on the East Coast Drive.
J. F.
Stumbled onto this Cafe on our way to Freycinet, fabulous lunch.
E. D.
This place is great for a casual meal. In saying that though... It was one of the best burgers I have had - they added a tangy chutney to the roll which was great. The bun to meat ratio was out slightly but everythin was super fresh. Would absolutely recommend this place to anyone looking for a tasty bite to eat.
B. L.
Lovely little roadside cafe. Owners were very friendly and welcoming. Ordered some hot choccies and they were great!
F. G.
Nice place to stop and have some food. The service is excellent and highly recommend to try the Seafood Chouder it is so nice..
J. C.
Great basic food, park good for kids and the friendly goats they enjoyed patting in a nearby fenced area. Easy to park and turn caravan if your towing anything.
J. H.
What a great bloke Lester is, the owner. So welcoming, friendly and knowledgable of all the surrounding areas to visit. His home made ice cream cones are delish!
M. L.
Thank you Lester, Colette and team for your warm hospitality, very tasty food and snacks, great campsite and views with goats to entertain. Playground for kids, homemade icecream. Water available, dump port 10mins away in Bicheno. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
A. T.
Food great, service great and camp ground great 👍
S. N.
One of the best restaurants we came across on our trip to Tassie! Loved the ambience, location and the friendly staff. Lots of good food to choose from. They had lots of toys for the kids to play while waiting for the order and also an outdoor playground which is a bonus. They also had a change room which was not available in many cafes.
m. s.
Lovely place, great food, chutney is excellent.
T. S.
The place was great to have breakfast and coffee at, the gentleman who runs it is wonderful he will tell you places to go and visit around the area, so if your up that why pop in. Love it.
K. F.
Very friendly, great food.
P. G.
Good visit. Staff are very knowledgeable about the local sites to visit. Ice cream is a blended vanilla with frozen berries mixed in at the time of order. It gives a kind of soft serve texture to it. Fruit flavours in the ice cream are almost non existent. Still worth a stop in
R. H.
Make sure you stop in here for a break...guy there is very friendly and has a good sense of humour...peanut-butter ice cream is a must...its a free camp for self contained campervans / caravans with a donation...support these good stops
J. G.
Hopped in for a quick stop during our travels - a ribbiting experience, lovely service and the ice cream is fantastic! Will definitely stop by again when we come to Tasmania next!
Had the Berry Blend - they give a generous serving, I highly recommend it, my only regret was not having it with chocolate top!!
B. T.
The rum and raisin ice-cream here is absolutely delicious. I am so glad that I managed to grow a second stomach squeeze this treat in after lunch, before heading back to Hobart. The owner also has a pet alpaca and a couple of goats which is a novelty for the kids.
D. R.
To notch seafood chowder! Rich, flavoursome I've cream. Awesome scones. Friendly service. Goats. One alpaca.
We stopped in for a quick bite, as we were day-tripping in the area, and the gentleman at the counter was incredibly helpful with suggestions of things to do or see in the area. And the chowder really did set a high bar to beat.
K. L.
very special place, lovely for breakfast. A bee hive on the wall which shows great interests of knowledge for children.
A. G. S.
Very good service and fantastic food. Thanks
T. H.
I always come here after a good hike at Wineglass bay, best place for dessert.
They have icecream sandwiches, raspberry ice cream cones, berry smoothies.
I should try some meals next time
J. O.
Great place to stop off for a bite to eat and stretch your legs. Both the BLT and meat pie were delicious, and the staff were very friendly. It's well set up for families as it has a little playground. My only criticism was the coffee, it tasted very milky and weak. All over I'd recommend stopping by.
S. S.
Yummy steak sandwich with good quality thick crispy chips
G. T.
We regularly go for a meal at pondering frog..great meal! Great price! Huge menu...fabulous icecreams and great service...everything you could wish for in a bright, clean and friendly environment, couldn't recommend highly enough!
R. J.
What a lovely spot. A top place for RV's and caravans to stay overnight. The shop has a fantastic menu and good seating. You can get pretty much any alcohol type with your meal, beer, spirits mixed drinks in cans etc. A lovely souvenir section as well. Pig out on ice creams and sundaes on a hot day. Inside and outside seating. The host and staff are lovely and friendly. You'll feel at home in seconds. Personalised service with a smile. If travelling on the East coast a must visit place. Close to wineries and Freycinet penisula and national park. Heaps of onsite parking.
M. A.
It was ok..Devonshire tea wasn't the greatest, I would have liked it to be real cream not sprayed out of a can but if your in the area for an ice cream your all set.
T. A.
Homemade berry ice-cream is to die for. Customer service is outstanding. Lester is a cool cat. Good location. The llama and goats are very cute and friendly to pat and feed. Would definitely recommend.
C. C.
I loved it, I went there 2 days ago, with my mum, dad and 2 younger siblings, and the workers there were really nice and the food tasted really good. I highly recommend!
K. A.
Great food and very child friendly. The owner made every effort to accommodate us and our children. Since the pizza oven wasn't started yet (it was a slow day for her), she cooked them something off the menu. Great experience
R. M.
Awsome food and great friendly staff and service.
N. L.
Loved seeing gluten free options! Our server was very polite and the food we had (from the cabinet) was very good. Such a cute, homey place - love the animals in the front paddock!
O. H.
Excellent food, fast service, friendly and helpful staff. Nice light meals and excellent dessert range. The ice cream really is fabulous. I was most satisfied with The Pondering Frog as a family café destination. We look forward to trying more items on the menu next time.
E. G.
Excellent home made food and cakes. Local beers and wines. Inside and outside play areas for kids. Goats and lamas in the yard and overnight stay for campervans.
Very helpful and friendly owner..lots of good tourist advice given freely. Oh..and there is a working beehive inside the restaurant area.
Well worth a stop even if just for ice cream at this quirky establishment.
B. M.
Worth dropping in for an ice-cream. Tasty and very generous serving size.
K. G.
We had a lovely time stopping for breakfast at The Pondering Frog. We had driven past it a few times and regretted not going in sooner after having a delicious meal and incredible service from Lester! His passion for his work really showed - he gave us some great advice, we had a joke and enjoyed a banter with him. Couldn't recommend it highly enough!
r. g.
Food was delicious. Enjoyed the owners try humor. Was a pleasure to be around. Made the effort to give advise on our holiday. Thoroughly enjoyed. Could tell he had passion for his business and customers.
V. S.
Compliment to the chef. We ordered the Scallops and Vegetarian curry pies. It was hot and delicious. The salad and fries were fresh and fried just then respectively! Customer service was great as well.
W. Y.
Friendly owners. Had an ice cream sundae and soup of the day, both of which were tasty and generous. A little pricey but what you would expect given it is the only cafe for quite a fair stretch of road. Clean toilets. Nice little out stop on the way to Freycinet
B. W.
What's little gem! Quaint little place and a very comfortable stop off. Sheltered outdoor (& indoor) seating with heaters and blankets on the cooler days.
Plenty of delicious locally made wares.
Mild roast coffee. Delicious home made ice cream.
Super friendly and enthusiastic staff.
S. Z.
We had the Sundaes and Banana split ice cream. They were very fresh and nice! My little daughter takes a long time to finish her ice cream and it usually gets messy but this ice cream stayed frozen for a long time!👌
J. A.
Absolutely awesome. Owners are so lovely. Had a sundae(Thursday) on our way up and stopped on way home for 'breakfast to ponder'.
Both were Delicious.
10/10 would recommend.
J. C.
Had the hot chocolates here during our drive. Nice spot and the staff were friendly.
S. P.
A must stop on your way up the coast for ice cream lovers. Friendly staff, comfortable seating. Lunch menu available. The ice cream is really good and you can get it dipped in chocolate.
C. R.
Yummy ice creams... a definite stop
A. H.
Bit eclectic, probably grown organically over the past 4 years, however the ice-cream is lovely and creamy! Odd rule about what ice cream is served in a cup, and what is in a cone! We had cherry in a cup, with real fresh cherries, even a pip in one! Friendly people, acknowledge your presence as you come in! Ponder no longer, Stop in!!
j. k.
The owner has put some heart in there. Lovely.
A. J.
The food was pleasant enough, but was overpriced. Case in point was the scone. $8 bought a sizeable, warm scone, but the supplied cream was that terrible aerosol "whipped cream". It looks great, but is essentially air and virtually tasteless. It also didn't come by default with butter. I had to ask for it, and wasn't given much.
T. K.
I found this a perfect place to take a break from a long drive. We had purchased few ice creams here. It was good. They serve food as well. The staff was very humourous.
L. M.
Wonderful little spot for a break on the main highway. Very friendly owners Lester and Coleen. Lester is very knowledgeable about the area. Chowder was amazing and service was great, lots of choice for food. RV parking and camping is a bonus. Thanks highly recommend.
t.
Awesome hospitality. Stopped in for breakfast with the kids and the staff were so warm and friendly, even helping us plan some things to do in the area.
Food was fresh and tasty with a seperate gluten free menu.
👌
J. S.
Had coffee. Good service, pleasant location.
A. B.
Great knowledge and service, Lester took time out to give us the best tips and tricks for traveling the east coast of Tassie. Definitely above and beyond the expectations. Icecreams were delicious to top it off. Would recommend a stop by this tranquil stop
B. R.
Best place to stop for an Icecream ... We tried Double Choc..Rum and Raisin.. Passion fruit and my personal favourite... Mixed Berry with Choc top. If you are after a fresh hand crafted ice-cream and a relaxed family rest place... Then do not hesitate to stopover.
t. d.
We had the best breakfast, and had a quick chat with the most lovely owners! Very welcoming and excellent customer service. Food was delicious and came quickly. Wpuld highly recommended eating here
I. R.
We made a point to visit this eatery and were more than happy we did!
Lester is an awesome man who makes you feel at home with his warm service and helpful tips.
The food was delicious, homemade with generous portions (we had seafood chowder, garlic shrimp and rice, calamari and curry veggie pie with chips and salad).
Berry ice cream for kids to top it off (very yummy) and Shiraz for parents.
Our kids had the best time feeding baby goats and admiring all the frogs on premises (toy ones only) and we tasted some of their yummy chutneys and marmalades (we bought a few to enjoy at home).
Very reasonably priced Tassie souvenirs.
Great sitting outside or inside and clean toilets.
Highly recommended for anyone!!
C. F.
Lovely friendly oldschool cafe. The curried veg pie, chips, & salad meal deal was exactly what I felt like along our roadtrip down to Freycinet. Very yummy, and the chips were cooked just how I like them. Coffee was good. The owner, Lester, was very friendly in his jokester customer service and provided us great info about the area and places to visit. A good spot to drop in for lunch :)
E. T.
Great place to stop for ice cream. Delicious and they had some unique flavours. All tasted very natural, not too sweet. We had a bit of fun watching the goats and alpaca too.
M. L.
Very lush scallop pies ,etc etc
B. J.
Nice food, good ice cream, reasonably priced and very friendly staff.
S. R.

N. L.
Lovely place with lovely owners, great for kids
c. l.
Good pit stop. Food was ok but abit over price
D. B.
Extensive savoury and sweet menu suitable for both adults and children. Delicious home made berry ice creams and sundaes. Fast service. A lot of tourism information available. The proprietor offered knowledgeable tourism advive, too. Clean toilets. Lovely surroundings. We ate on the sheltered verandah. Greenery and a big pond next to the cafe. There is an alpaca and a goat on site to entertain children. Tasmanian food, wine and quirky frog souvenirs.
D. B.
Friendly service. Really nice good. Burgers were delicious.
C. Y. (. C.
Cute spot, loved watching the goats
G. W.
The seafood chowder ($24) was the bomb! Best I’ve had so far. The garlic bread, ham and cheese toasties were really good too. Great fuel for after the wineglass bay lookout.
S. P.
I have been dropping in to the FROG for a few years now on my travels and Lester and Collette never disappoint. A hearty Welcome, Good food, clean amenities, information and directions and recommendations when you need them and FanTasTic Icecream 🍦🍦

D. H.
We have driven past here for the past 10 years or so (when there was a giant strawberry on the site) , and yesterday on our way back from a day trip to bicheno we finally decided to go in, wow, one of the best decisions we've made! 2 of the 3 kids had an ice cream in a cup and the wife, myself and our other child had a choc coated banana split with nuts in a waffle cone, it was HUGE and delicious. The people on the next table ordered a main meal , the fish and chips looked nice and the pancake stack yum yum yum. Cant wait till our next trip up the east coast , this will be our first stop, pancake stack here we come !!
T. J.
A must stop just near Cole's Bay Turn off for all your Goodies .
Cold Drinks, Tea and Coffee fantastic Ice cream and deserts .
Collette and Lester are very passionate in what they do and will serve you the best Tassy has too offer ...and as an ole mate said to me once .
" Smiles are Free "
Nothing is too much trouble for these owners to make you welcome
What they have done , and continue to do with the Development of this Business for the Tourists and Locals is unbelievable.
Great work Collette & Lester you are both huge assets to Tasmanian Tourism Industry and the Local Community and you must be very proud of what you have achieved to date .
Cant wait to get back to have another serve of your Beautiful Deserts
Cheers for now Julie and Terry

This place is awesome in every way
We throughly enjoyed our short stay
T.
We stopped on cycling trip of the east coast and the owners could not have been more accommodating. Offering some local safety tips for our ride was a real assistance. Thank you
A. K.
OK if you're going to claim to have the 'Best Seafood Chowder' like your sign says then make sure it is the best (and it wasn't). 'Average at Best Seafood Chowder'. And $24 is steep. Wait for the $15 Chowder at the Lobster Shack 10 minutes up the road.
A.
Great service and the food is the best especially seafood crowded, choc topped icecream is a favourite anytime of the year, great for children, wonderful pit stop for up or down the east coast
G. M.
Very nice, great ice cream and relaxing setting. Calling it an icecreamery may be stretching it a bit but did enjoy.
H. N.
Love this place. The food excellent and the service is the friendliest I have experienced in a long time. Definitely the place to stop when in the area. Good gluten free options too
P. V.

J. E.
Nice place to stop, the ice cream is pretty average but the service and staff were lovely.
They have a nice little play ground for children and a small paddock with goats and a alpaca :)
A. J.
We stopped over at Pondering frog cafe, on our way to Freycinet. We found the cafe clean and reasonably priced. They also sell homemade pickles and jams. The owner and the staff are welcoming and friendly, and gave us tips on what to see at Freycinet. On our way back we stopped over again for dinner.
s. s.
I recommend the seafood chowder. We camped here for two nights, thanks. Lots of useful tourist information from Lester. The ice creams are the best.
C. G.
Used to always go here for their homemade berry icecream when passing through from Launceston to Coles Bay. Havnt been down the coast in almost 4 years, and very excited to stop over along the way! Impressed with the renovations and new instalments. Icecream didnt taste as fresh or 'berry-y' as it used to, but still greatly enjoyed the stop-over before back on the road. A great selection of Tassie produce on the shelves too. A must visit if travelling to the East Coast.
J. G.
Friendly staff, nice ice cream 9/10
T. L.
Staff were super friendly and helpful, giving us lots of info about where to visit in the area we were and where we were going to. All the meals were great, reasonably priced, and there were plenty of options. Outdoor play equipment for the kids.
