Located on one of Melbourne CBD's hidden laneways, Cafe Lafayette was a cafe serving Japanese-influenced modern brunch food with a restaurant-vibe. The dishes on the menu were quite unique, and we ordered their famous Egg Nest (okonomiyaki, fried leek slices, yuzu mayo, 62.5c egg), Panko eggplant, and the rainbow latte. I was a big fan of both of the dishes; the egg nest came with a generous serving of crispy leek slices which complemented the okonomiyaki’s texture really well, and the panko crumbed eggplant had an added flavour from the bolognese side. Coffee was ok, service was pretty quick and friendly. Overall, I was impressed!

One of my favourite place to eat lunch in Melbourne City. The place is so cute and intimate. Presentation of the meals are very immaculate. Taste good too :) One thing that I need to bring up here they need to upgrade their services. I’ve found it a little bit too slow . Don’t forget to order their coffees :)

A great little cafe tucked away in a nondescript little alley that evidently takes great care and detail in every photogenic dish they serve. Book in advance or be prepared to wait in line for a long while. However it is worth it. Their popular fried chicken and waffles is deservedly so, chicken is delicious, not greasy or oily; their matcha French toast colourfully decorated. Beef bolognaise pie with cheesy mash with shredded pastry beautifully presented. However its richness means probably best to share than eat all on its own. Would suggest they remove unnecessary tomato sauce and provide lightly toasted white baguette slices to better balance flavours instead. Affogado delicious, only fault is that drinking it is over too quickly.

It is quite rare to see Asian fusion brunch in Melbourne CBD. So, when we found our about this place, we decided to give it a go.
We really enjoyed their dishes. The soba noodles with scallops were really tasty. The chicken waffle was quite big, crispy, and juicy.
These two dishes were their most popular ones.
The place is usually packed so it's best to book first.

Easter Sunday is a day to celebrate and that's exactly why we chose this place.
The reviews were pretty good but also their multicolored rainbow late art.
This quirky place specializes in modern Australian brunch with heavy influence of Japanese cuisine. It definitely does instagram worthy plating, and does not compromise on the taste and quality.
The rainbow latte not just looked pretty but tasted quite good...And so was the chai latte. Their must try Bird Nest and Beef Bolognese were quite good to taste (but not unique as described on the menu) , yet was more about presentation.
Expensive in our opinion but once in a while, it's fine to splurge on something as dramatic and glamorous as this one.
Attendants are quite engaging and friendly, and plenty of options for vegans.

Great food and friendly service (although slightly slow...)! Keen to see when they open up again as I'm missing their food :)

Amazing lunch spot in the city. I had to start with the rainbow latte and it was so pretty I almost didn’t want to drink it and mess it up. We ordered the beef pie and the octopus fritters. The beef pie was the stand out dish. Wow! Such an interesting take on beef pie... the mince and cauliflower mash filling was super tasty and was topped with a crispy melt in the mouth pastry and mozzarella cheese. So 👏 delicious 👏. Really lovely cafe in the heart of the CBD. Stunning decor, friendly staff and a really relaxed setting with great tunes. We will be back!

Had brunch @cafelafayettemelb I can’t get over this place 💕 The vibe and the menu options are absolutely amazing. Located in a laneway in the city, such a hidden gem. They have a Japanese inspired menu. Such a unique menu with so many delicious options and everything looked so pretty. We absolutely loved it all 😍 Matcha French toast was so good loved the combo of the cream, matcha with berries.
How pretty is the rainbow latte 💕 My favourite rainbow cake which is a Japanese dessert, was the Tiffany blue the mint flavour.
We had the following:
💕Matcha French Toast
💕Tamago & Scollops
💕Fried Chicken Bao
💕Rainbow Latte
💕Matcha Latte
💕Raindrop Cake - Tokyo Express, Angel Kiss, Matcha Lover & Tiffany

A hidden café down a "Melbournesque" lane serving Japanese fusion brunch and interesting drinks at "fashionable" prices.
Let's get it out of the way, I am not enamored by the rainbow latte - good coffee but more an Instagram gimmick. The velvet (beetroot) latte is very light with a hint of malt.
The waffle and fried chicken is a success for me - wrapping the squid ink waffle around the crispy, moist chicken, dipping into the cheese and honey - it taste salty and sweet, and quite addictive.
The unagi hotdog is very messy to eat - the bun is cut through, so you can't hold it like a hot dog and eat it. Using knife and fork to cut up pieces of bun, unagi, tamagoyaki (egg) and lettuce is just not the same. I have to say, there is not much unagi there. And the tamagoyaki is very sweet. However the bun (brioche-like) is very good. And the hot chips is fresh, crispy and creamy.

this hidden cafe gem serves up a chic, intimate, classy yet chill atmosphere experience
they ate definitely set apart from other brunch cafes with their unique and artistic array of dishes!
if you are going to order a coffee you are going to order their Rainbow Latte! tastes like a normal coffee but is def insta worthy and a good conversation starter!
i absolutely loved the Birds Nest (Japanese okonomiyaki) and the Tamago& Scallops (croissant with folded omelette and seared scallops - and a nice hint of chilli 😉)
you are gonna wanna arrive early or be prepared to queue up!
C. G.
What a little gem tucked away food is fusionish. All things Japanese they like to do things differently all the way to hot and cold drinks. A big shout out to Monique great customer skills.
O. L.
Truly lovely service and food presentation, loved the variety of creative fusions on the menu.
I would point out was that I was slightly disappointed that the unagi hotdog was fairly simplistic compared to the photos they have up on thier IG and some other photos on Google reviews, having chips and lettuce rather than the (I believe?) tempura seaweed and some other filling in the pics. The Bird's Nest sauce was also quite salty, but was otherwise a very enjoyable dish.
Another thing is that some of the seats are rather small and uncomfortable, and may not fit a larger person, but the very lovely staff was helpful and willing to swap the seats for us.
There was also the smell of cigarette smoke inside the restaurant, I presume from someone leaving the door open as they smoked outside, but overall it was a very lovely atmosphere and ambience, and I would definitely come back again.

Have you ever came across a rainbow latte this good? You must head to @cafelafayettemelb a fusion Asian brunch cafe serving up unique yet delicious and irresistibly great delicacies, once having which, will make you visit this cafe again and again.
What I had:
Rainbow Latte, no it's not only good for the gram, it tastes equally good with an intense hint of best quality espresso.
Iced CaraMocha, caramel lovers this one is going to be your favorite, served with whipped cream, this cool drink is an ultimate quench thirster on hot summer days.
Japanese Pasta, which is a rare find in the city and the best one you will find here. Served with scallops, baby octopus, fish roe, chilli mayo and sesame sauce, garnished with egg yolk, radish and seaweed. Tasted really superb, especially with the creamy scallops, it turned this dish so mouth melting.
Matcha French Toast, this matchalicious french toast became my absolute favorite dish here, the sweetness is perfectly balanced with a strong essence and taste of matcha, this delectable dish is my new best friend. Brioche served with mascarpone, homemade dango, berries, apple crumbs and roastes soybean powder. This one is strongly recommended.
Raindrop Cakes, Tokyo Express and Angel Kiss, such mind blowing creativity is presented here with these cakes. If you had overtly sweet desserts then definitely go for these, since these flavorsome jiggly jelly type raindrop cakes are absolutely yummy. I loved the Tokyo Express more, served with soybean powder and brown sugar syrup, it was impossibly ah-mazing!
Besides the great food, the staff here are so friendly, kind and helpful and trust me, price wise, it might be a bit expensive but it's worth every penny to try out these delectable and irresistible Asian fusion dishes that are so different than the rest. Their service is quick and the neon lit decor of this place gives it a very classy vibe.
V. W.
What a great vibe and atmosphere here.
They offer a nice range of well presented dishes where we tried:
The matcha latte was so smoothe and paired well with the runny local honey.
the sauteed mushrooms were spread in a circle across the dish and sprinkle with shaved parmesan giving it that extra kick. The mushrooms were well cooked with the diced potatoes.
Bird's nest - this dish is amazing. The fried leek makes for a perfect nest and the texture paired with the soft house made okonomoyaki was so delicious. It's topped with a 62degree egg and drizzled with tonkatsu sauce.
Eggs Atlantic - a stable at most brunch places. I loved the potato croquette which was topped with a poahced egg and salmon, then drizzled with hollandaise sauce.
N. N.
The food was delicious, fusion Japanese with soba noodles and fried chicken sandwich. I thought the drinks and dessert were a tad overpriced for what they are. I would come back to try more of the main menu.

New cafe alert!!
As a fan of their sister cafe Grand Lafayette I had high expectations for this new cafe. And safe to say my expectations were exceeded.
The Japanese fusion dishes we ordered both tasted great and looked gorgeous.
We ordered:
The beef short ribs, which was tender & cooked perfectly, the meat just fell off the bone!
Up next was the tear drop cake with four flavours. My favourite being the mint, which was bold, not to sweet and very tasty. Last but not least was the Dutch pancakes, which was the perfect sweet treat to end our brunch.
The staff were all very polite & accommodating. I'm looking forward to going back & trying something new next time.

We are so excited to share with you all this amazing Café which has opened it’s doors in Melbourne CBD last week. And it is called @cafelafayettemelb .
.
This is a unique café, serving some uniquely amazing Japanese fusion dishes. And we were so lucky for being able to taste some of them.
- Unagi hotdog - this is not your normal hotdog but instead of sausage has a unique Japanese filling and comes with side of seaweed chips which are delish. - Bird’s nest - this is actually Okonomiyaki at the bottom but presented in a way that it actually looks like a bird’s nest with an actual cooked egg on the top - The chicken bao - these baos are so tasty with a crispy tender chicken filling and colourfully presented
.
.
So next time you are looking for a café to have a meal, drink or even coffee- surely try @cafelafayettemelb and you will surely be impressed.

With a menu that draws inspiration from edible art, every dish here is a sight to behold with beautiful flavours to match. Located in a heritage-listed building, and with neon lights amongst a backdrop of exposed concrete and brick walls, this café is oozing with character.
Be prepared to be wow by the Chicken & Waffles that comes with a squid ink waffle, cheese sauce, maple syrup, almonds and wild honeycomb. A fusion of sweet and savoury, punctuated with hints of smoky caramelised flavour. The Sauteed Mushroom Crepe is just as impressive, featuring an abundance of mushies and the distinctive aroma of garlic, topped with mozzarella and parmesan to give this dish a milky nutty taste.
Sweet tooth will be delighted with the Dutch Pancake. With lemon curd and fresh berries, I was treated to an explosion of tart and zesty flavours with each bite. Lovers of freak shakes will enjoy the Black Sesame Surprise and Matcha Matcha. Thick and creamy, bold in flavour and a beauty to look at.
The new menu items feature Japanese-influenced dishes such as Yakisoba Pan, Scallops and Tamago and Avocado Onigiri. Definitely something different from your usual brunch fare.
S. M.
Came here for brunch. Every single dish that we ordered from the all day menu was superb. My friend said it was the yummiest Asian fusion brunch ever and I think I agree. Highly recommended! Delicious food and lovely service.
P. E. N.
The prettiest food in all of Melbourne? Quite possibly. It tastes great too which is even better. Each meal looks and tastes like art. Not in the sense that it tastes like paint, but in the sense that the food itself is a work of art. I like this food. We met our friend Stove out the front and when he saw us he said “Hello”. We replied “Hey”. We sat down and ordered our food. When I saw the food come out I said to Dirk, “What? How.” It looked so good. We ate our food and it was so good Dirk dislocated his jaw and attempted to consume his own head. Yum yum. We finished our food and then we paid for our food. It was reasonably priced. Then we left. Goodbye!

The Melbourne cafe formula is pretty stock standard, but Grand Lafayette is shaking things up. Their menu is an interesting take on classic dishes with Japanese influence, all of which are both pretty and delicious. I’ve tried several items off the menu but one of my favourite is the mushroom crepe, which doesn’t look like a crepe at all. It’s filled with mushrooms, folded into what looks like a tart and fried (I think?) to a crisp. It comes with an egg and cheese and is the absolute best comfort food. My partner raves about the chicken and waffles, which isn’t commonly found on Melbourne menus. It features what sounds like an odd combo of squid ink waffles, fried chicken, honey and cheese sauce, but apparently it works really well. If you get a side, make it the sweet and savoury tamagoyaki. There are lots of decadent drinks on the menu but if you want to keep things simple, both the coffee and matcha are great.
J. T.
Could easily be 9/10, if not for missing elements on dishes, small, inconsistent serving size, slow service and many not-available dishes on the menu.
Would be happy to pay Sunday's surcharge, etc. too.
Great ambiance, beautiful small, exclusive setting in one of the forgotten laneway of Melbourne. 28/06/2020

Look no further for a neon lite cafe! This is fun, quirky and unique. Great menu items at average prices.
As dark as it is, i wouldn't call it cosy.

A new go to place in the heart of Melbourne CBD.
We loved the selection of food that they had here. A lot of their menu items are unique and presented in a fun way!
We tried their bird’s nest, which is essentially their version of the renowned Japanese okonomiyaki! We also tried their Japanese pasta and unagi hot dog.
They have lots of tun shakes to choose from as well, we opted for the matcha shake! Yum!
F. Q.
Cafe Lafayette is the hottest spot in Melbourne CBD now, offering amazing food options with unique twists.
The items that I tried including beef short ribs, dutch pancake, chocolate milkshake and rainbow latte were some of the best dishes i’ve ever tasted!
Also the raindrop cakes were so lovely! It’s my first time trying something that quirky.
I’d definitely be back for more, there are still many great dishes on their menu to try! ✨

All I got to say is, in future, if my chicken & waffle doesn't come out looking like this...I don't want it...✋🏽😂✋🏽😂
@cafelafayettemelb just had me gobsmacked with the AMAZING and DELICIOUS stack of chicken and waffles over the weekend.😍😍😍😍
Eceeything was just TOP NOTCH.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

😍🍗fried crispy chicken on squid ink waffle with cheese sauce, maple syrup, apple crumble and almond sliver, strawberry 😋😋😋
If you have a love affair with chicken and waffles as i do, you gotta check out @cafelafayettemelb for their incredible take on this fab dish.
L. S.
My top 1 brunch place in my mind. Fantastic cafe experience and food come out so quick. Reasonable price.
S. R.
Wow what an amazing experience. Cafe Lafayette combines brunch and Asian fusion perfectly. The space and atmosphere gives off spacey futuristic vibes and I love the neon lights. We ordered:
the Benny - perfectly poached egg, tasty slow cooked pork and a crisp hash brown. Wow so tasty and well balanced with the hollandaise sauce
pork belly gua bao - the pork wasn’t dry at all and the fluffy bao was such a great combo
chicken katsu - absolutely amazing! Juicy chicken coated in a light and crisp crumb, so delicious!
fries - well seasoned and crunchy!
rainbow latte - such a pretty piece of art
matcha latte - strong in matcha and served with honey for a delicious creamy drink that’s not overly sweet
The staff are super friendly and food came out promptly. I highly recommend this spot!
c. c.
A cafe hidden in CBD, amazing fusion food and of course if you are a coffee lover like me, perfect place for you. The menu offers a wide variety of delicious and mouth-watering starters followed by the main course, specially designed for youngsters and adults. Service is great, all the staffs are very friendly. Would definetly visit again and I highly recommend the Cafe Lafayette.
K. R.
The whole Melbourne need staff in hospitality industry. I met the boss last week, he was hard to hire good staff and not open yet, but it will reopen soon.
E. C.
I know this was a design award brunch. The Pork Benny was different enough to stand out from other places. However still waiting for reopening.
J. M.
A hidden gem in a cute lane - even if you're looking for it you can easily walk pass it! When you enter you walk up small stairs with neon lights surrounding you and enter a bar which encompasses you with bright lights. The food is super tasty and good quality Korean style food. Highly recommended!
K. F. D.
Cafe Lafayette are hidden in the inner laneways of Melbourne and one place you must visit!
The food is very theatrical, but most importantly delicious! This Japanese Fusion cafe is a great intro to Japanese Cuisine. This is one place they'll never forget! Their signature dishes will also blow you away, as will their unique drink's menu. Most importantly, the service is welcoming and friendly.
📷 Bird's Nest - Housemade Okonomiyaki, Yuzu Mayonaise, Tonkatsu Sauce, Fried Leek Slices, and a 62.5 degree egg.
📷 Matcha French Toast - Brioche bread with mascarpone cream, homemade dango, strawberry, apple crumbs and roasted soybean flour.
📷 Oceanic Tempura - Lobster, scallop, eggplant, sweet potato and enoki with wasabi salt.
📷 Raindrop Cakes - Angel Kiss (Rose Flavour) and Tiffany Blue (Peppermint).
The menu offers some familiar flavours, especially for younger children. My son enjoyed sharing some of the elements from the french toast and Japanese Pancake. He even enjoyed the matcha drizzling sauce for the first time. There is no separate kid's menu, but they do offer jam and toast, and eggs on toast too. Bookings are highly recommended to avoid disappointment.

I was remember the cup colour was Tiffiny blue. The speciality coffee was my best morning awake drink. I also like their food and impressived.
C. H.
This was the best top 10 cafe in my mind. Lovely little cafe in CBD lane way. I know it will be back soon.
C. H.
When I was studying in Melbourne in 2020, the place was our study team’s favourite and love to back again and again. Now I was graduate from uni this year, I will try again.
P. H.
I was impressived by the food. Egg was perfectly fried and the mushroom, pickles and tomato relish were great components to the burger.
W. Z.
We went there for lunch on Sunday. The cafe was crowded with customers, so we had to wait for long time for our orders. Basically the food was good.
I. G.
The burger was always the biggest portion and full of ingredients. It was the best brunch place in my mind.
S. C.
If you travel around CBD, this place would be the destination of your lunch trip. 100% positive feedback from my side.
P. S.
Excellent brunch place I had tried, loved the chilli prawn scrambled which I ordered every time.
L. M.
I know the F&B industry faces a big issue after pandemic. Hope this good restaurant can survive.
S. Z.
Had a amazing experience at CL. Good place to have brunch with firends, clients and families. Excellent food and service. Highly recommonded!
E. H.
Their dishes are blanced flavours and presentation. This is why I love them so much, however, The COVID have changed everything. Waiting for my dream place back.
R. S.
We have been here for a short time breakfast due to the limited time before work. Many selections of the brunch menu. The food was all very generously portioned.
C.
One of the popular cafes in the CBD that can get good experience during peak times. You should try the coffee and beef plate, it was really big portion.
m. x.
I was really pleased with my dining experience and will come back again! Why? I got 30% off by the Melbourne Money last year, hope this year would have the same promotion too.
Z. H.
Good taste and very delicious brunch. The environment is very cool and we took many photos here. Brunch menus are various and it was difficult for me to just select one of them. My friend and I like here so much and will try other food next time.
G. R.
This place served typical kind of brunch and every plate looks so pretty. I can not help to try every dish.
K. S.
I will be back again because I think this is the best food I’ve ever had. Maybe after 2 months later the place will be open again.
A. A.
The pork dish had a delicious sweet flavour which I was impressed. Next time I would try more when I back again.
S. E.
Such a lovely environment, was greeted with a smile and enthusiasm. I loved that I could order and pay myself with the QR code as soon as I was seated. Drinks were brought out almost instantly and looked and tasted amazing. Food was also quite quick to come out and looked absolutely incredible . I have never been anywhere in my life that has had better presentation for their dishes than this cafe. The food tasted as delicious as it looked and certainly did not disappoint. Prices are also very reasonable. I could not fault them and especially not their customer service. You could tell that everyone working at Cafe Lafayette has a lot of pride in not only the food and beverages that they produce but also their cafe in general. Would highly recommend to anyone and everyone and will certainly be back when I have the chance!
B. R.
It was given very good coffee time when I was studying in CBD. The food was nice and creative.
史.
I’ve heard from friend, the restaurant will have a new menu when it is open. It won’t disappoint us.
W. B.
The food was delicious and very reasonably priced. Thanks a lot. We will be back.
H. R.
Today a friend recommended brunch of this shop. Sure enough, it tasted great
A. M.
After eating this shop Brunch mood also became better. It was a really good experience
R. C.
Very local cafe with impressive deco. It’s kinda a wonderful drink for summer season.
R. E.
I have to say the food menu is huge and varied. The kitchen must be very high pressure during the lunch time. Do not be hesitate to try their coffee which I think it was the best.
G. T.
I've heard the interior design was awarded. It is more like half industrial-chic feel. It is very hard to unlike this place.
S. B.
Winter is coming, the laneway left no too many restaurants. Miss 2019.
l. s.
It was lovely Sunday, we three visited store by another friend recommendation. The french toast had a lot of variety and unagi hotdog was nicely made. The decor is very becautiful and modern, just seating area is not big.
V. C.
I have dined in this coffee shop for brunch three times , I got very joyful and delightful meals every time, also had very nice service and appetizing, decorative plates. I extremely recommend it for you who wants to search a quiet, private and comfortable place to have a brunch. You definitely will have amazing and unforgettable experience after tasting this store!
E. P.
Absolutely delicious. We had the birds nest and matcha french toast which both tasted as good as they looked. The drinks also did not disappoint. Service was lovely and friendly. We greatly enjoyed it and can't wait to come back soon!
Z. K.
We ordered so many dishes, but I only tried the big breakfast which is massive delicious in one plate. Love all the ingredients! Love it so much.
M.
I do not like meat, so I got their vegan choice Veggie Pan and my friend chose another gluten free one. It was delicious. Fresh ingredients.
T. M.
Had the big breakfast, pretty huge portion and lovely coffee as always. Absolutely love this place, please do open soon.
L. P.
After 1.5 years, I am back to Melbourne again, but this place I was visiting last Friday, it seems has not open yet. Hope it would open soon.
M.
Fantastic service, amazing food and awesome atmosphere!!
A. W.
We tried few things here, the breakfast was amazing and good presentation. overall 5 star.
R. C.
What a lovely Sunday. I started with the coffee and it was great. For the dishes, I have tried the French Toast and big breakfast. Portions of all dishes were generous and beatiful.
L. L.
As people said, it is valued food and drinks are so good. We used to visit this place 3 times a week.
B. L.
Food is very pretty, but average tasting. Service was slow and they allow split bills that held the queue up.
Ordered the birds nest and scallop scrambled chill eggs.
Drink order was wrong and no apology but they changed it.
P. G.
Located in the heritage building area, this historic building looks just like an secret place in the laneway. It gives a homey and comfy feeling. The design is antique and they serve some of the food and drinks in a mordern Victorian style. I started with the coffee and it was great.
B. A.
Bring friends to this restaurant today, the response is superb. Looking forward to coming back next time.
H. M.
It's been a long time. But, I always want to come back. We had a great lunch here. It felt a little crowd inside but the food was very tasty.
k. m.
Friends recommended to come to this restaurant for the first time, the experience was good and did not disappoint.
B. F.
we couldn’t be more excited to experience the dinning onsite. However, it is still not opening yet. Miss their coffee and food.
F. C.
It is a cafe of Japanese spirit. Everything is made to its perfection, including the food, drink, service and background music. I’ve already been there 3 times in a week, because I want to eventually try their entire menu. I highly recommend their Unagi hotdog. Just give it a try and you will love this place!
D. K.
Ate this brunch. Brunch at other stores never went there again.
l. s.
The covid was lasting so long time, make this local cafe doing business so hard. I will support the local business foe sure.
N. J.
I love this brunch place so much!! I’ve been here twice with friends and the food + ambiance are so good 😭 The atmosphere is really relaxing, especially when they play piano pieces! The food is also really good, I’m a big fan of the chicken bao 🥰 On top of that the staff members are really friendly and approachable :)
Y. L.
the service here is too goooood better than a 5 star hotel.
food is tasty. but the amount of serving could be improve. it probably cost you another dollar to make it generous. and people will come back. instead of you putting so much money on social media.
C. Z.
Good morning guys, coffee is a must drink in the morning. Cafe Lafayette will cost you just under $30 for a brunch meal, it’s worth it and delicious.
P. K.
I really like this place so peaceful and nice decoration definitely come back again and again.
X. (.
Creative Japanese inspired brunch food. Food was quite heavy tasting, quite surfeiting after a few bites. Recommend ordering a portion less and share with your friends! Ambience was nice, great lighting to compliment photo taking! Service was almost non-existent as orders have to be made at the counter. However, overall a not bad experience. Wouldn't mind heading back if I'm in the area.
L.
A nice little place for brunch. I really enjoyed the beef pie, it was excellent - a flavourful dish. Friendly service and generous portions.
V. R.
Very close to my office last year, I like their service and cafe cup. So Relax.
R. V.
The food price is average in my opinion. The dishes are big and lavish. I love their service with always smile.
A. G.
Good vibe, nice interior design. the bunny chairs are very adorable along the bar. Love the colourful rainbow latte and the foods are nice and creative.
Totally inlove with the chicken waffle and lobster hotdog.
I would recommend this over the other Japanese style brunch in the city for sure!
Great place to go, will def. come back and try other dishes in the future.
M. F.
Service was also great. Highly recommended. The drink was super nice. The French Toast was so worth every calorie.
T. E.
Try the hotdog, It was refreshing and big size, I shared with my friend. Overall good place for lunch and would come back to try other food on the menu.
C. R.
My favorate coffee was here and charmed service. This cafe could be an excellent choice with special drink.
T.
Wow!! When walked into this cafe I was really impressed with the ambience and the comfortable layout of this Japanese cafe. In a Melbourne Lakeway just off Lonsdale Street, this is the sister cafe to Grand Layfayette in Prahran.
Now I started with a delicious rainbow latte. It was a great start and my friend had an amazing freaky shake.
We ordered some raindrop cakes, an “Angel Kiss” rose and a “Tiffany Blue” and they were exceptional. The jelly had a great firm texture and the crumbs were delicious, especially the rose.
The Dutch pancake was just perfect, it was served in the pan and although it was thick, it had a light texture and w the toppings, completely moorish.
The confit pork bao and the Panko eggplant bao buns were delicious, light in texture, and the different meat cooked soo well.
The famous birds nest served w a 62.5c egg, was incredible. Served w house made okonomiyaki, yuzu mayonnaise, tonkatsu sauce, and fried leek slices was visually exciting and even better to eat. The okonomiyaki was full of flavour.
The lobster hotdog was mixed w scallop, tamogoyaki, parsley, mayonnaise, pickled onion and seaweed chips was once again visually exciting. The hot dog bun was fresh and the hotdog was just moorish w a mild lobster flavour that worked soo well.
My matcha latte w premium Japanese green tea, and a side serve of premium Australian honey was lovely and a great way to finish my meal. The bitterness of the matcha was really well balanced w the premium honey.
For more pics and videos have a look at my instagram page. This place is a MUST visit and I just want to thank the owners for their kind invitation. And whilst I don’t generally mention this, the waitress was absolutely lovely and the service exceptional, and not only on our table.
G.
.Often punching in this shop, Brunch has never been disappointed.
F.
I have been this place for many times, so love it. Such a small place considering the crowd of people who were there (only one table was available, we got lucky) but well worth visiting.
A. I.

P. B.
Love the coffees here but need to wait for a couple of mins. Too busy.
C.
Visited the recently opened Cafe Lafayette in the CBD and really enjoyed all the dishes we ordered as well as the really friendly service.
We tried a few of the MUST TRYs including
- Unagi Hot Dog- the unagi itself was so soft and flavourful and it went so nicely with the brioche bun! I also loved the addition of the nori chips which were slightly sweet and very crispy
- Beef Pie- such a cool concept representative of Mt Fuji. I really enjoyed all the flavours and textures.
- Matcha French Toast- the matcha sauce was very flavourful and I loved the addition of the apple pie crumbs!!
Can’t wait to visit again 💓💓

It is reliable for hot, strong, rich, creamy coffee in my mind. every morning have a cup of coffee here which is the best time in my life.
f. q.
When you look up some place to eat during the lunch time, I recommend this place highly, very convinient and close to Myer. You must try the coffee.
f.
Deee-licious ! 💯 coffee was on point .
P. D.
Still not open yet, but looking forward to the reopening. Remember the smell staff, are they still working?
l. s.
Can't image that, so busy lunch time on Saturday. Only one table was available, we got lucky. it was well worth visiting.
D. W.
Small cafe with great ocean views. Had a delicious steak sandwich. And also tried the avocado smash and fritter, which were good. Their real strength is the sweet dishes: crazy milkshakes, waffles, jelly, etc. Generous portions. The team has great attention to detail (food, interior design) and offer friendly service.
D. S.
I absolutely love this cafe - I make it a point to go there at least once a month. The service is excellent, the staff are extremely friendly and the food is delicious! Definitely one of my favourite brunch places at a beautiful location too! Highly recommend it to anyone who wants delicious food with a view of the beach!
A. L.
Do yourself a favor and visit this lovely café. Hospitable hosts, delicious dishes, beautiful presentation and wonderful desserts. I recommend to everyone! I would like to come back here again and again.

It's no surprise that Cafe Lafayette has a high rating. It has such an innovative menu with a myriad of interesting fusion dishes. We were invited to try out some of their items.
Located in Niagara Lane, the unassuming shop front opened up into a funky, welcoming and tastefully decorated interior.
We had:
The Bird's Nest - this blew my mind. The nest consisted of leek pieces on a bed of okonomiyaki with just the right amount of tonkatsu sauce. The egg had a lovely rich runny yolk to moisten the dish.
The Benny - again, beautifully presented with an amazing combo of braised pork, kale, potato and a delectable hollandaise sauce.
The rainbow latte and matcha latte were prepared with care and both tasted delicious.
Looking forward to returning again asap!
d. h.
This is not a coffe shop or brunch spot, it also sell a range of pastries last year. So nice and yummy, always reliable.
R. E.
Had the corn fritters, they are delicious. Great cafe in a really nice spot with fantastic views. Service and food is some of the best in Port.
The French toast with caramel sauce is also amazing.
Japanese matcha hotcakes have been added to the amazing list.
G. A.
I have tried the burger - it was great, I guess it is a homemade one. Good quality beef and bread. loved it.
y. L.
Friendly service and staff were very accommodating to my food allergies! Great place to stop by for a lunch and special coffee.
J. P.
Great spot for a coffee, we decided to try the food so i ordered the salmon unfortunately they were out so i ordered the barra with scallops. Unfortunately no go either so i went in a new direction and went for the pork belly. Was not disappointed with it at all i could only imagine what the fish could of been like. Great coffee and good food and desserts that impressed me. Would of been a 5star if they had the whole menu however i will definitely be returning and recommending
F. E.
Great coffee, great food and great service! The food was 10/10 for us, the portion is big and so valuable.
M. H.
Fantastic first time at this cafe a quieter place which is much appreciated in todays loud cafe culture. Food was a fusion of different styles and very tasty ! The staff and customer service was top notch
C. M.
The food was delicious and we'll presented:) I liked the dark ambience and the slow music. Must visit! The staff was really friendly 😊
M. T.
Location is a bit hidden but that’s what makes this place special. Tucked away in one of Melbourne’s laneways, when we entered the place we thought that it was a bar. Food is very unique and interesting. Service is good too, very friendly staff. Would definitely go back here!
S. B.
Normally we love Lafayette however did not have a good experience today. We got two coffees and a muffin to take away and were served by a lovely guy who was really friendly. Coffees were great however when we tried the muffin in the car after driving for 5/10 mins, we realised it was frozen inside. Not great given that we paid $15 for the coffee and muffin and odd as it had been heated. Very disappointing.
M. C.
Lovely casual cafe, friend and I had their all day breakfast and it was delicious, scrambled eggs and bacon, fresh squeezed orange juice and a lovely strong coffee. Service was excellent as it had quite a few customers and we didn't have to wait long at all, wonderful view looking over the bay, would go again..
G. A.
Miso salmon came in a very small portion (female adult is not full). The matcha latte was not yummy, also in small glass at $8. This place is overrated.
There was a miscommunication when ordering drinks resulting in extra chai latte ordered. My partner went to check with them about this. A male worker with bad attitude told off the girl who took ordered asking if she repeated the order when taking it and she said she did. Then he told off my partner saying “the girl repeated the order, and you said YES, so?”. My partner finally said it was his fault and probably didn’t hear properly and said he would just pay for it. Another female staff (probably more senior) came to say they could just refund us and we got the refund.
I just wanted to point out “is it WORTH to be rude to the customer for $6.5 chai latte? The cost is probably $3-4”. We could just pay for the chai latte and just won’t come back again.
The workers are Japanese whose English are not their first language with strong Japanese accent and English are also not our first language either (but we are Australian citizen living here for more than 10 years). So don’t make it totally our fault about the miscommunication when you are hiring mostly Japanese people who are on working holiday visa.

Café Lafayette is a great spot to have brunch and coffee, after hearing a bit about it, i decided to give it a go, i also saw that the plating were pretty fancy.
Walked in, greeted and got a table straight away, it was half full so easy enough to get a table, we initially sat near the entrance but a spot was freed with view on the ocean, yes thats right! Have to try this place in summer!
I had the mushroom dish, when it arrived it was beautifully presented but no toast or bread, so thought hmm, would that be enough, forgot to mention that i ordered a side of chorizo too, it was amazingly filling, i even regretted ordering the chorizo as I didnt need it, but still managed to finish it, the coffee had a great after taste flavor, but could have been a tad warmer as the place was really cold inside, not sure if there isn't a heating system but as a whole experience, no matter how food, coffee and staff were great, if you felt cold thats what you would mainly remember... Saying this, i will definitely go back, shame thay the toilet have been designed that way, a bit close to the seats, but this is not the owners fault i guess. Overall, great experience, its a 4.5 for me.
T. P.
I used to take away the coffee and bread everyday. It was always busy.
C. T.
Cafe is in the heart of CBD, coffee is amazing and food is nicely presented! Will definitely visit again!
M. W.
Great cafe if not awkward to find. Definitely different (read hipster) breakfasts. Asian fusion menu mixed with American food. Would go again, no surcharges for any cards and they take Amex.
X. M.
What a busy lunch. I had to take it away. Ordered Flat white which was pretty good. Thank for your coffee.
G.
I saw the ad from wechat and had Chicken waffle, the food was made using good quality, crispy and tender.Overall this one was just yum.
x. a.
Super friendly and nice of the waitress. What do I say about here, great food and even better coffee.
G. L.
I like their creative menu, but the lighting is too dark for a cafe… and quite pricey
T. C.
I had a lovely time at cafe Lafayette. The cafe has a new spin to Japanese cuisine. The interior is also really cool! My top dishes were the Dutch pancake and the squid ink pasta! I loved the black sesame and matcha drinks.
M. T.
We've only ever had the raindrop dessert and hot chocolate here and it's very delicious. The views are great over looking the beach. A must try. The place is very neat and clean too.
S. I. I.
Daniel is a top notch bloke. Had an issue on the promotion day but was quickly fixed by the team. The food tastes great and is definitely worth trying. Will recommend to all my friends.

Review revised: August 2018.
Service was friendly and chirpy. Food and drinks came out fast.
The granola was delicious. The fresh fruit and yoghurt ensured that the granola was too dry.
The matcha french toast was good. The flavour of matcha is very present.
Our favourite was the rose sphere coconut drink. The rose sphere once melted into the coconut water provided an amazing flavour.
T.
Would most definitely go back again! Definitely worth the experience
G.
The dishes are good, the dish called "bird nest" is quite creative. The service is really nice. If you have no idea what should eat, they will give you nice recommendations.
L. L.
Fantastic place! Excellent customer service, efficient process.

Solar and his team have done a fantastic job of restoring this cafe to its former Zest days. The view from the window bench is arguably the best from a cafe in Port Melbourne, the coffee (and the long 6 group machine) is very very good and the decor, fittings and music all work really well. The reason I am giving three stars is because the menu and the food is completely off the mark. Port Melbourne is a vibrant bustling place where plenty of cafe - goers call home - and I am unsure that the average morning palate is ready for a Asian influenced breakfast. Fix the menu and bring in a chef that can cook the tried and tested classics and I will be the first to return to give it 5 stars!
UPDATE: menu has been updated and now includes a proper breakfast selection including things avo and feta on toast, big breakfast fry up and porridge. Well done guys. Still need to fix draught and circulation issues as it was freezing in the cafe the other day!
UPDATE: Breakfast is fantastic, coffee great as always has been, Spotify music works and the draft is fixed - nice and warm inside! Upgraded to 5-stars! :-)
A. A.
Lovely service and nice menu, great coffee and beautiful interior design. I would frequent if local.
B. L.
The food was interesting, visually nice and it tasted nice, the affogato was alright, bit overall the food was enjoyable and the at sphere was nice.
M. L.
I totally love it ! The food is so pretty. My friends and I had a really great time here!
M. G.
Hidden down Niagara Lane is the gorgeous new Cafe Lafayette - love the fun interior, with bunny ears, neon lights and iridescent tables. Staff are super friendly and helpful. Now onto the food, their infamous rainbow cakes make an appearance but the rest of the menu is more of an Asian twist on brunch and lunch, my favourite has to be the unagi hotdog - big but surprisingly light. Their extra okonomiyaki with the 63 egg on a nest and then we also had their Dutch-pancake, which reminded us of bread and butter pudding/custard, so good! For drinks I enjoyed their black sesame freaky shake and my friend had their rainbow latte.
Y. Z.
If you have been to this spot, you would not forget the wonderful experience. The food is awesome with friendly service.
A. C.
Overpriced, and average food. Great presentation and service btw. A cozy place to stop by.
爽.
Nice ambience, chair was not so comfortable seems like a design that won’t let you sit wholeday, food was amazing and kinda creative and modern, coffee was alright, didn’t know need to order at counter, blindly waited but that’s fine, it wasn’t that hard to realise you need to order at counter like fast food chains, overall great little cafe on an alley.
M. M.
Good food and great view here. But need to wait a bit long to enjoy the food even we went around Brunch time in the morning, when it wasnt really crowded
A. D.
In my experience customer services has been nothing short of excellent.
A. Y.
Best taste! Best service! Best food ! I really enjoyed the food and experience there, the chicken waffle and lobster sub is have to try recommendation!
A. A.
Fantastic service, great calming aesthetic, open views of the bay, delicious food from a lengthy menu (took ages to choose from all the great options), had a lovely golden turmeric latte... did I mention the fantastic service? Bliss ❤️
P. V.
You can't believe that it is a great little lunch/brunch spot with friendly staff. there is no reason for me not go to this site.
a. b.
I live locally in port Melbourne and this is by far my favourite cafe in the area. Great friendly service with an interesting international menu which always comes out perfectly cooked and perfectly displayed
V. V.
Finally caught up with an old friend @zsandrea for lunch today and we decided to pop into @cafelafayettemelb .
What a welcoming treat!
The dishes we tried, included the Unagi Hotdog, definitely a piece that would fill your appetite. The beef pie, to satisfy your meaty needs and the Dutch Pancake to ease your sweet tooth cravings.
The raindrop cakes were something else, a gelatinous treat to finish off your meal.
Let’s not forget about the ‘Freaky Shakes’. Would highly recommend grabbing the Berry Punch if you’re after something fruity and sweet! And Double Choc Brownie for those who have a craving for chocolates.
D. N.
DO: The chicken waffles, confit duck and beef pie.
DON'T: Leave without having the tear drop cake.
TIP: A little hard to find but well worth it.
T. J.
Had the perfect JAM AND TOAST on Friday, then we decided to come again on Sunday.
W. S. T.
A little pricey but dishes are very creative and interesting. Delicious too. Would come again to try the other dishes.
M. B.
I am the coffee lover, the cafe lafayette coffee is rich flavor and we all satisfying.
Z. L.
I found this lane way café is originally from Port Melbourne beach, a lovely place has true Brunch.
A destination café to visit.
A.
This place was not the same as to when I came here previously, a year or so ago. It was still decent but above average food and drinks. Service was still good.
J. L.
Next level brunch down Niagara! Not your typical eggs benny, açai bowl or smashed avo kinda place. A must order is their birds nest - okonomiyaki, yuzu mayonnaise, tonkatsu sauce, fried leek, 62.5 °C egg 👌🏻
需.
Outstanding environment and delicious food. Must try rainbow latte and Duck leg there, super tasty!
J. V.

Although everything looks fancy, the food is mediocre and expensive. The raindrop is a complete hype. A piece of jelly and a sprinkle of nuts.

(Translated) It is not recommended for people who want to eat a moderate Brunch to go to their house. The food is very innovative and it is really not. At least it feeds people visually. As for the taste, it may need to work hard.
I ordered Fermented rice latte for coffee, which is indeed a bold innovation, and it is limited to really bold innovations.
The food I ordered Bird nest and breakfast bowl, the visual impact is good, but it is limited to good visual impact.
Generally speaking, it is suitable for those who like to take photos with their cards!
(Original)

(Translated) It’s a really super bistro, at the beginning I was attracted by its name "Lafayette". However, after I found that what is even better here are the dishes and coffee, not only looks good but it also tastes very good. This is the best bistro I have ever visited.

(Translated) Sitting at the window you can see the beautiful view of the harbor. Good place to eat Brunch ~
[Matcha Hotcake] $ 15: The taste is very good, but the plum sauce is a bit awkward. The matcha and the red beans in it are more suitable but the red beans are slightly less.
[Soft Shell Crab Burger] $ 19.5: I finally have a soft shell crab burger! I like it very much. The crispy skin of soft-shelled crabs and the tender meat match the salad and burger without any greasy feeling.
[Freak Milkshake] $ 12: On the Special Menu, ask him for three flavors, chocolate, plum, and matcha. Come here to try a monster milkshake that Canberra hasn't eaten. In fact, it is to put dessert on the milkshake. The value is high but the taste is average. It can be considered a try!

坐在窗口可以看到海港的景色十分漂亮。是吃Brunch的好地方~
【Matcha Hotcake】$15: 味道很不错,但是配的梅子酱有些尴尬,抹茶和里面的红豆更配但是红豆略少。
【Soft Shell Crab Burger】$19.5:
