We had a wonderful brunch experience at this Code Black cafe yesterday. The spacious and airy place relaxed us while we enjoyed the excellent coffee and tasty food. I had the flavourful pulled beef toasties while my wife had the fresh rockling fish burger. In between munches she gushed, "This is so good. We must come back again soon!" This pretty much sum up our experience... excellent coffee, great food and warm friendly service. We'll be back soon!

Known for their great coffee beans, loved for their food. Code Black in North Melbourne offers an enjoyable brunch experience for all in the area. I had the kimchi waffles that came with a nice portion of pork belly. This place can get busy on some days, but is worth the wait. Come here for coffee, beans and brunch.

I’ve been to a few of the Code Black locations and I can say this with confidence that you’ll always get good coffee and some pretty yummy food. I wouldn’t say that it is the best cafe Melbourne has to offer, but it’s a pretty solid option. The coffee is certainly the star of the show! Lovely experience here. Great customer service from the waiting staff. Nice environment and I always want to try sitting upstairs. Maybe next time. They have nice batch brew coffee comes with a little cue card description to let you know what you are drinking. Nice selection of food. Although the “green eggs” breakfast was a little disappointing because it wasn’t warm enough with the “green” sauce and eggs. Otherwise I still recommend coming here for a nice breakie or brunch.

Finally got to visit the Code Black North Melbourne HQ and although the menu is a bit different (c.f. Brunswick), it was equally as tasty. The coffee, you already know its good. In terms of food I had the avocado toast featuring some sort of nori butter (which was actually so so good). The service was by far a standout. Staff were so friendly and accommodating to our group who had young children with us, ensuring we had a safe environment to enjoy the food with them. Oh and they're animal friendly (outdoor seating too!

Tip for this place. If the tall guy with the curly hair is the barista, don't get the coffee. No offence intended but Its consistently 3/10 when he’s working. I could have melted tungsten, it was that scolding hot. However when the regular asian lady is working the coffee is 8-9/10.

One of my favourite cafe in a north Melbourne. Food and coffee are good! My favourite is the pastrami eggs Benedict. Tried few things on the menu and they were all tasty. You could ask them to give you a container of your wouldn’t be able to finish your meal. Got outside tables, you are more than welcome to bring your dogs around

GREAT NORTH MELBOURNE CAFE TO ENJOY A LAZY BREAKFAST Code Black is quintessentially North Melbourne in a restored old warehouse in a mixed residential / commercial strip. The cafe has a good menu selection and excellent coffee. Choose between old favourites and interesting newer creations. Sides available to help you create your own bespoke breakfast too! Staff are very cheery and attentive. The cafe has two levels. Ground floor has both indoor and outdoor seating. If you choose one of the four outdoor tables, go for the one under the tree :) Service was fairly prompt when we went last (Saturday morning at 9 am) and there was plenty of parking available on the road (side of road and middle of road parking). Wheelchair and pram shouldn't be too challenging. Cards and cash.

Breakfast, a little different. What a fascinating menu. You have your classics here with a surprisingly interesting twist. Highly recommended. Service is prompt, and friendly. We went on a Sunday morning and there was no wait, though it looked like it could get busy quickly.

Wow. Wow. Wow. Just truly amazing food. I had the bacon schnitzel sandwich and the crust on the bacon this delicious the chutney Jam sweet and nice and the bread toasted to perfection. My dining companion had the pork belly burger and I wanted to eat both. I also had the cold drip coffee which was great on a very hot day. I will definitely be back to try more items from this delicious menu. Also looking forward to visiting the Brunswick store soon.

On the way to the espresso Martini festival, we stopped in here. And even though the team were closing in the afternoon – they were gracious enough to let us eat a quick bite and grab a drink. And for that, they have already won my admiration. It was the closest cafe that was open AND willing to let us come in. I found it infuriating that other cafes on the street would turn us away. But literally their loss. The cold press coffee on a warm day is exactly what the doctor prescribed. Plus the hostess was kind enough to pander to our competing demands, allowing us to enjoy our bacon and egg toastie with half in BBQ sauce and the other half in chilli jam relish. Yes, I am biased – it’s their customer service that won me over. TDT: 5.0/5.0

Dropped in for a quick bite while in the Market area. Greeted right away by a friendly smile, I was soon browsing an eclectic menu. With some helpful advice, my order was in. I learnt that a Dirty Chai is chai tea mixed with a shot of espresso. I like that this place offers honey separately so we can sweeten it as we wish. The result is delicious blend with the spices of Chai, the slight bitterness of coffee and sweetness of honey. Have to try this more often for the aromas and flavours. The miso cured ocean trout was particularly fun for the palette. Trout, scrambled eggs, radish, celery, confit black garlic and chilli piled on to a piece of toast, offering harmonious but distinct tastes and textures. Though the eyes were too big for the stomach when it arrived, it turned out to be a substantial meal as the server described. Truly friendly and helpful service in this modern, airy setting. Love that the bi-fold windows open up on a beautiful, sunny day like this. A relaxing spot to grab a bite or hang out with friends.

Ohmygod this place makes me SO HAPPY every time. The coffee is consistently superb, I think among the best in Melbourne, the service is always friendly and professional and the food is so frikkin’ good. If you’re into french toast (especially if you’re a little hung over) do yourself a favour and order the bacon French toast sandwich because it is PERFECT. The rustic apple chutney. The melty raclette cheese. It is a masterpiece. I also cannot go past the smoked trout kedgeree, another beautifully composed dish. These guys knock it out the park every time, I would come here every day if I could.

It became one of a favourite cafe during a visit to north Melbourne. A singular place for a restaurant . Our brunch was so good and therefore the sauce was so smooth and delicious. Food and occasional are good! My favourite is that the pastrami eggs Benedict. I think they used the medium roasted bean and full cream milk. Tried few more things on the menu and that they were all tasty. you'll ask them to offer you a container of your wouldn’t be ready to finish your meal.

I went for breakfast this am and I am so impressed. The space itself is very cool and the coffee was delicious. At first glance, there doesn't seem to be a huge number of vegan items on the menu, and you have to ask your server about items for dietary restrictions instead of them just being listed on the menu. But it turns out they were able to do the braised beans with mushrooms instead of cheese and egg and they were SO GOOD! Seriously so full of flavour and I didn't feel that I was missing out on anything at all. Service was great as well. I would return 100%.

I consider myself to be one of the most indecisive customers when going out to breakfast, so I can't thank the manager enough for his recommendation. Coffee - got a takeaway flat white. Taste is chocolatey and rich, with high notes of lemon citrus. The mouthfeel is satiny, but feels a bit thin and lacks depth, finishing quickly and with a slightly bitter tone. The space was open, airy and had plenty of light. The staff were quick and efficient. Definitely worth a look if you're in the area.

Another great local cafe that's attempting to go "full St Ali". Right down to joining many others in charging a surcharge on all weekends (10%). The new menu is the latest step in their pivot towards a broader market. However, I can't help but think they're pushing out their regulars by making their menu more complex with less options that are "everyday" meals. My thoughts are that Code Black have adopted the St Ali Cafe model to attempt to become a cafe that attracts customers as a self contained destination. But I suspect this will be irksome to the regulars. Time will tell. I don't want to make it sound like CB owes me anything. I've enjoyed visiting this cafe for several years and I can't expect the business to only cater to my demands. I wish them luck on this next chapter while I begin the search for a new spot to spend my mornings.
