Comments of Raya Melbourne

Raya is a small bakery cafe serving handmade cakes, snacks and sandwiches. They offer a beautiful selection with a range of flavours not available else where.
My favourite so far has been the curry pie and the hochija.
We’ll definitely be coming back to try the rest of their range.

THE CAT IS OUT OF THE BAG!
Raya you never disappoint, even with the massive line up. Their recent corn cheese cookie is a hit if you want something more on the savoury side. I also highly recommend the chiffon cakes that are light and fluffy as well as the egg salad sandwich.
Their new matcha drinks range is refreshing and unique. I LOVE their new matcha barley drink.
Thank you Raya for the delicious baked goods, amazing coffee and cheerful customer service.

Another my favorite cake shop in town!
Asian style chiffon cake is the best with variety of flavour like pandan and miso black sesame.
Got a chane to order a special moon cake during the mid autumn festival and it was so delicious too.
Will come back for more yummy sweets 😋

Grabbed some curry handpies at 9:15am perfect to reheat in the sandwich press at work! :)
Previous review 2020: Great savouries and kueh. Staff are lovely and helpful if you need recommendations. We picked up some takeaway from Raya on a weekday. We loved the Chicken Curry Hand Pies ($9 - not pictured because we ate them too quick!). The curry flavour was great without being powdery like some are. Basically a curry puff cross with a pastie. Would be a great lunch option!
Raya has a weekly rotating range of 4 Kueh ranging from $2-2.5 each. We tried the Kueh Salat (butterfly pea sticky rice and Pandan), Kueh Talam Pandan (Pandan and coconut milk) and Kueh Kaswi (palm sugar and coconut). These are not very common in Melbourne and nice to see some variety. Also available was Kueh Angku. Our favourite was the Kueh Salat, but all are delicate and well-made.
The Pandan cake ($9 slice, $65 whole 25cm) is moist with soft meringue around the outside. I found it a little sweet compared to the traditional plain version. Pineapple upside down cake ($7.5) was dense and crumbly, perhaps a little bit dry around the crust.

The pandan and black sesame chiffon cakes were both lovely and the teh tarik was like a comforting warm hug although a little bit sweet for me. I also took a kueh medley box (the main reason I came ^_^) back home to Sydney to share with the family, and we loved them! They even include a little pouch of kaya in the box. My favourite was the kueh sago ros (tapicoa kueh flavoured with rose syrup and rolled in shredded coconut) - this is a Malay kueh not commonly seen here, so I'm very glad I got to try such a good version from Raya. The vibe is very relaxed in the cafe, and the staff are personable. Will be back for sure!

Finally made it after 1 hour wait. Had the macha & strawberry its okay wouldn't order it again as for the pastries the pineapple cake, the pie beef and chicken are nice if next time I drive past and there is no queue I would wonder in but if there is a queue I would not stop.

Dreaming of the Tasting Box from Raya, such good value for money and great selection. I love the chicken curry pie, kuih and my partner loved the scones and cookies. Also loved the iced Teh tarik!

Line moves quick, had the peanut butter chocolate cookie, assortment jelly box and a teh tarik. Food and drink was amazing! Highly recommend this place

Great coffee, great range of sweet treats and service.
Had the Kaya Butter Toast with Soft Boiled Eggs. Eggs are perfectly cooked! Kaya is very nice to my surprise! Smooth and not too sweet.
Their traditional nyonya kueh are very nice too.
Also their chicken curry puff are very delicious!
Highly recommend this cafe.

Who came up with the idea of mixing Pei Pa Koa and matcha to make an amazing drink! What a brilliant idea👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

A nice south East Asian dessert place in the CBD. The venue itself is a little small but it was nice to watch the chefs cook and bake. I tried the spinach cake, ribena cake and matcha cookie. The cakes were soft and tasty, the spinach cake tasted just like a carrot cake. The matcha cookie was really sweet and contained too many white choc chips, the balance could improve. I’ll definitely be back to try more!

Every time I visit Raya, I always enjoy what I get from them, from Malaysian kuehs/cakes, to their huge cookies, curry chicken pies, fluffy cakes, kaya toasts, sandwiches, iced tea drinks and other cookies celebrating special occasions such as Chinese New Year. Everything is made fresh and high quality ingredients. The place is very chic and peaceful to hang out at.
C. P.
Very hard for me not to order a NY style cookie when I order my coffee there! Very delicious! We live locally and I can tell you that there's nothing better then Kaya nearby! My partner loves the Pandan cake and anything else looks equally delicious.
If I would give a feedback I'd say that a second person behind the coffee machine would greatly speed up the service.
A.
Delicious and delicate fusion cake but just little bit pricey. Love the matcha pound cake and the miso cookie, must try!!
L. C.
Asian bakery with unique flavours. A little on the sweet side and relatively expensive but pretty decent for someone wanting to try Asian flavoured sweets
Q. M.
Raya offers some of the most unique cakes you can find in the CBD, with southeast Asian-inspired flavours like pandan (which I tried in chiffon cake form) and Thai milk tea (in layered tea cake form). The tea cake was a bit too heavy on the buttercream for my liking and didn’t taste particularly like tea, but the pandan was heaven. It tasted and felt like a sweet green vanilla cloud. I’d go back to get it again.
M.
Really enjoyed our picnic box! The chocolate cake was 👌 in general, the cakes are a little on the sweet side but still yummy! The staff are really friendly too. If you order online, you don't have the option to order slices of cake/pies but you can still walk in and takeaway slices. It would be good if they improved the online ordering to allow smaller purchases (we ordered a whole cake just so we could try a new flavour without knowing we could get a slice if we walked in!)

Raya opened up to a lot of hype, and if you're a dessert freak, you definitely wanna give this place a go. Malaysian-inspired desserts, and also kuihs that you don't wanna miss out on. Tried a range of kuihs and I must commend the beautiful texture - soft, bouncy and with the requisite chew. Definitely will be back to try out the rest of their desserts.
L. L.
Love this place! Good vibes, friendly staffs . I had their lovely chicken sandwich with matcha latte and of course the kuehs. It was amazing! I will definitely go back again, there are so much i have to try. Thanks for making all those amazing food.
A.
Lots of sweets, with cakes that look pretty tasty.
Very generous serving size of Teh Tarik. Open Sundays.
L. Y. X.
Amazing Malaysian snack café, the served the pretty authentic malaysian Kuih and cheers my mood.
nice coffee and the interior too 😚 love their plan collection .
i. i.
Fresh Malaysian kuih(cakes) for people who miss that sticky sweetness to go with your kopi-O. Cakes that most south east Asians grew up with can be found here and they are made fresh (daily).
F. A.
We really enjoyed the pandan chiffon and matcha loaf! And the tuna sandwich was delicious. The matcha strawberry drink might not be for everybody, only if you like that type of sweet🍓
M.
A welcome gem to Melbourne city, serving strong coffee and a variety of treats in particular chiffon cakes, cookies, Malaysian nyonya cakes and pies. The standout for me is the curry chicken pie - the pastry is very "short" and the the curry chicken flavour is spot on "Malaysian" - not Indian or Thai.
E. E. D.
Everything is so delicious. Good coffee. I especially liked the sandwiches with milk bread. Chocolate cake is not traditional but I like it.
Staff are really nice and atmosphere is also great.
A. G.
This new gem is a standout from all the cafes in the vicinity. The coffee is the best in the area. I find it very moreish and is made the same every day which is hard to come by. The breakfast roll and the cakes are great but my favourite has to be the matcha white chocolate cookies. They are so heavenly that I have introduced these to work colleagues. I haven't been able to try much because I can't get past the cookies which taste amazing as they are or you can heat them up in the microwave or dip them in milk. I dream about these cookies! Their instagram is really great as well. Stop by and check it out.
C. T.
One of my go to spots for coffee. Never disappoints, well done to the baristas! The cakes are delicious too but my ultimate favourites are the assortment of cookies. I highly recommend!
K. W.
I tried the ube pie and sesame chiffon.
Ube pie was delicious with a strong ube flavour and the crust was flaky rather than biscuit-like, which was really interesting.
I didn't like the sesame miso chiffon quite that much—while the cake was good, I felt the miso frosting bit on the outside was too overpowering and ended up taking away the delicate flavours of the black sesame chiffon.
A. H.
Good variety of Malaysian desserts and pretty much make an effort into making all their stuff delicious and good looking!
O. R.
Nice range of cakes and Asian inspired stuff. Matcha latte silky.
J. P.
I do enjoy all the sandwiches, sweets, matcha and hojicha here and the staff are friendly.
However $13.50 is bit too pricey for a sandwich (herbed chicken) given deli sandwiches are very trendy in melbourne right now and most places offer a lot more substance/ quality for anything over $12. For reference.. nico's sandwich, hector's deli, bissel b etc etc.
It would lose competitiveness at $13.50 fairly quickly I believe.

Nice Cafe, Lot of my favourite , Kueh is amazing, the Curry puff is generous and nice , Thai mik tea is amazing , Matcha is a classic , Chiffon Cake is amazing , alot of the favour remind me of home. Lastly the coffee is amazing and i heard they purposely find a roaster to have a special blend and staff is amazing .

Super yummy kuihs! Brought them to a picnic party and they were an instant hit! Shame I forgot to take more photos. The packaging was good as well! Perfect for a picnic!
M. C.
As you walk into this friendly cafe you are immediately welcomed by the familiar and fragrant aroma of coconut / pandan. Offering made to order sandwiches, Kueh (bite sized South East Asian sweets), home made cookies and cakes, the menu blends traditional and modern flavours. Take the time to dine in and enjoy.
D. O.
Nice friendly atmosphere, staff are courteous and Malaysian Kueh & Curry Chicken Puff is nice too. It would be great if they make Nasi Lemak Chicken and Beef Rendang on Banana Leaves. Simple Malaysian rice dish and I am sure it goes well with the Kopi, Teh Tarik and Kueh.
D. N.
Traditional South East Asian desserts and savouries. Great drinks selection as well. The Green matcha white chocolate cookies were simply amazing as well.
C. A.
pan asian cuisine at its finest

Awesome Malaysian treats.

Nice environment and super friendly staffs. This place is heaven for those who have a sweet tooth. The cakes and the pies were incredible as well as the coffee. Finally found the best Kueh(Malaysian traditional dessert) in town, remind me the taste of home😋 This place will be on the top of my to-do list.

The Best Ube Pies!
Great Coffee!
Little secret gem behind Collins Street 😋
J. L.
Always came here for coffee in the morning - great cold brew! Never got to try their sweets though but it must be good given the amount of people that would walk in and out.
K. [.
Had the Matcha cookie on recommendation from a staff member, legitimately best cookie I've ever eaten. I wonder if they're made here? I will definitely be back for more.
R. O.
So glad we can get Malaysian kueh in the city. I really enjoyed their chicken curry puff and beef bourguignon pie. Don’t miss out on their amazing cake selections as well! Lovely fit out
J. V.
Absolutely amazing kueh, they change the options every few weeks and it always tastes amazing! Just like they make it in Singapore/Malaysia/Indonesia. Highly recommend. Looking forward to trying their cakes and other assortment of foods that they make.
E. Y.
Hit the spot for Malaysians missing a taste of home! Had to stop myself from ordering everything. Tried the assorted cookies, assorted Kueh, Thai milk tea cake & pandan chiffon cake. The latte was really good too. Will definitely visit again.
S. N.
Im completely hooked on the spam and egg sandwich ,the staff are super lovely everytime
J. Y. L.
Best kueh in town. May be even better than the ones from home 😋
Cookies are soft and chewy on the inside and crunchy on the outside. Something in between a cake and a biscuit. To die for. Not for the faint of heart 🍪
T. L.
Good coffee, but they forgot my pandan cake!
S. B.
Amazing selection of SEA style cakes, everything was so good.
U. D.
We ordered assorted cookies, mixed Malasian kueh, Thai milk tea cake, pandan chiffon cake and coffee latte. All hit the spot and were lit. Staff were very friendly and nice. Will be back for sure.
