Comments of Bourke Street Bakery Surry Hills
D. C.
The long queue at breakfast or lunchtime is a pretty good indicator why this is a Surry Hills institution. Definitely a must visit if you are looking for pastries, bread or a coffee. The pies, sausage rolls, and croissants are excellent and if you have a sweet tooth I recommend the chocolate sour cherry cookie, lemon curd tart, and the ginger crème broulee are excellent choices. It’s takeaway only so grab a picnic rug and enjoy the food nearby on the grass. And to avoid the long queue, best to go before 12pm!
A. A.
Lovely place with nice staff and yummy treats. The red wine brisket pie was amazing, and the coffee is one of my favourite in Sydney. There was quite a line when we went but it was worth the wait. Will happily be back again to try more of their food for brunch as they look so good. Currently only doing takeaway but had a nice picnic at the nearby park
L. C.
Excellent quiche, egg flavour was soft on the inside with a hard but not flaky crust. Perfect quiche. The croissants were amazing and the coffees went well with them all. Pastries to die for.
J. L.
Pastries to die for. Loved eating their crossiant and pear danish! This place is definitely worth the line up.
A. L.
Great coffee and bakery!
There’re many types of bakery. Shop looks cosy and staffs are friendly!
Ginger tart is recommended.
A. C.
The pies and sausage rolls are always amazing here! The chocolate croissant was supper fluffy and crispy and a must try. However the almond croissant wasn't the greatest and was quite dense.
F.
This place is such a little gem in neighborhood, serving awesome pastry, excellent coffee and irresistible dessert 😊.
Start with Piccolo, it was perfect temperature and silky smooth creama.
Beef brisket pie, generous big chunk of beef brisket was a perfect for wintery brunch food.
Pastry was crunchy, golden baked to perfection and pie filling was tasty.
I choose ginger cream brûlée, for me it was a happy ending, those filling was not eggy at all, smooth texture and sweet ginger after taste.
D. E.
One of the best bakeries I’ve ever been to. The pastry and bread is faultless and each item I’ve tried has been truly delicious! The lemon tart is a highlight. The bakery itself is small and popular, so expect a 5-10 minute wait.
K. O.
They make the best Ginger brulee tart & Pork & fennel sausage roll ever! Love their lemon tart, danish and pear danish too!
S. S.
Bourke Street Bakery in Surry Hills is my favourite cafe/bakery to go to. They have delicious fresh croissants, very fresh sourdough bread, great coffee and mouth watering cakes and other desserts. If you haven’t yet tried it, you’re missing out. Highly recommend it.
They have long queues on peak hours (before work) or on weekends so get there early.
A. R.
I have been coming here each time I visit sydney, for as long as I can remember. The bread and pastries are always excellent. But during our recent trip to Sydney over Xmas/New Years, the stand out here was the staff. Despite working in a tiny store, which is super hot, with barely any aircon, in the middle of a pandemic with 30k cases a day - the staff were absolutely lovely. The were happy, smiling and very welcoming. I hope management is super proud of the team that work here. Thanks for putting up with our ridiculously long orders!
S. T.
We love this place and we usually buy bread every week. Our favourites are seedy sourdough and potato and rosemary. Great pastries as well! I recommend the almond croissant and the chocolate and raspberry muffin. Ginger creme brûlé is to die for!
M. B.
An amazing bakery with lots to choose from. Quick and efficient service too, even when there is a queue at lunch or on the weekend. Plain and chocolate croissants are by far my favorites... Probably had dozens over the last few years and always love them. If you're in the neighbourhood give it a try you won't regret it!
J. O.
Potato Rosemary Sourdough was really nice, plain white & soy linseed sourdough perfect with smashed avo. Great texture. They have your nice croissants as well. Beef brisket & red wine pie was delicious, plenty of meat inside.
M. S.
Visited the original bourke street bakery in bourke street. Very small place around the corner, but very beautiful exterior with the plants around the top floor, and very quiet corner to enjoy the good food.
Ginger brulee tart is truly life changing, the first bite almost made me cry, it was so tasty I didn't want it to finish and at the same time, I just want to finish it, so that I can move on with my life.
Pork fennel sausage was fresh and noteworthy but ginger brulee takes all the credit. Each one is handmade, flame thrown on the top to get the crispy layer on top.
The staffs are super friendly and helpful and shared the stories of the places.
There are recommended foods, this one is to die for, non-negotiable.
R. T.
Always tasty pastries and breads. Efficient service. So well located. A nicer spot than the one in Barangaroo. Nice vibes in the area. The sweets were particularly good, fresh and flavoursome. So glad it's about a 10 mins walk from home. Looking to try the baguette and bread next time as they looked so good.
P. I.
Really good bakery, plus their sandwiches is yummy. The ginger creme brelee is a something not to be missed. Their almond croissant is fluffy, not too sweet and has a good crunch to it. Come to Bourke Street bakery early, if not you'll be waiting in line. There's not too many sit inside the bakery. Good coffee too 🥐🥖🥨🥯☕
M. E.
Love the pies, breads, cakes, homemade juice, and coffee here. This shop only can do takeaway,no Dine-in. Located near Surry Hills Lightrail stop 🛑. It has branches in few places around Sydney NSW.
s. m.
The bread is great. The sausage rolls are amazing. I like that they have a narrow range of baked goods, all done well. Quality.
C. L.
Always reliable at Surry Hills. Probably the best of the BSB establishment. Very nice rhubarb and pear danishes. Muffins are good too, or snail, or lemon cake, or carrot cake, or meringue tart ..................................................................................................................,.........................and heaps more with a coffee to go. Yes so many things to choose from. You can even get very nice fruit mince tarts around christmas time. What more can you want?
J. T.
IMPRESSIVE bake house ...
Original; stewed beef n vege meatpie, lamb, raisin, almond sausage roll, lemon tart and croissant, they'll warm it up for you
Thank you @the coffee paddler in Gundagai for the tip!
L. C.
Lots of options for Vegetarians that aren't the usual spinach and cheese triangle! and delicious bread and cakes which have always been appreciated when brought to friends houses. So popular people join the line 10 people deep, the love is real.
J. M.
An almond croissant and a soy flatty changed my life. I can't wait to go back. It smells like god's kitchen, I'd you believe in that stuff.
Though it's life-changing either way.
Oh, and the taste, well it is out of this world. AAA+++ would buy again. Love this ace place!
E. D.
Amazing place!
Food is all really reasonably priced, with lots of options to choose from. Would definitely come earlier next time as some of the options we wanted were sold out, but there was still loads on offer.
Staff are seriously friendly and helpful, even though myself and my friend took out time deciding. Almond croissant was heavenly and the bread on the chicken sandwich was delicious.
Would definitely recommend!
S. S.
Our local bakery with heart. We love the recommendations that the friendly staff have given us as we love the barley loaf!
My other favourite is the curry pie 🥧 it’s become a favourite in the family.
B. N.
Super friendly staff and amazing pies! The filling is thick with loads or flavor. The crust is buttery and flakey. Delicious. I couldn’t resist the sourdough too!
G.
Amazing bakery with lots of delicious bakes! Try the sausage and fennel rolls and quiches. The pies are amazing too! The coffee was strong but that's how I like it! It's a small place, with limited seating. Suggest you be patient and wait or order takeaway.
S. L.
Came for the ginger creme brulee and it didn't disappoint. Crust is crispy and the ginger infused custard is spot on, not overly sweet and not too ginger-y.
Other pastries were a little disappointing (maybe I expected too much). I got the chocolate tart, chocolate croissant, chicken pie and sausage lamb roll. All tasted average and nothing to rave about.
There was a queue even at 10am on a Sunday. Limited spaces available so be prepared to take-away.
G. W.
Been going to this place for years and years. Never fails me. The lamb and harissa sausage rolls convince me not to be a veggie, the ginger Creme brûlée tarts and the coconut orange tarts are just as good as ever. Service always so friendly despite the place always being heaving. Worth the wait!
H. C.
This is a super cute, artisan bakery that does coffee and fresh juices. The bread range is obviously massive, however they also have a great selection of pastries and savoury items too. The pies are of great quality. Their pastry is buttery and flakey, but robust enough to hold the chunky meaty filling. The plain beef pie had some good steak chunks inside and plenty of gravy. The ham and cheese croissant was another great savoury option. Defo recommend.
E. B.
beautiful pastries and pies! :-) the ginger brulee tart does not disappoint! always made to perfection and tastes out of this world. the danishes are delicious too. would highly recommend this place for a quick treat!
J. A.
Sensational Taste!! Never tasted anything like it!
The Chefs must be at an Elite Level to produce this magnificent beautiful taste! The flavours upon my 1st bite exploded rich vibes this morning around me, im so happy i went there for my breakfast snack this morning, thankyou for this marvelous pastry you made! If i had the Authority i would Nominate Bourke St Bakery, for ☆Bakery Of The Year Award☆
🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆

The original Bourke St Bakery - only a small place, but always busy. Plenty of breads, amazing sausage rolls and pies - we thoroughly recommend the lamb and harissa sausage roll! The creme brûlée tart is also amazing. On this visit I had a fluffy berry muffin and espresso!
A. K.
Nice little cafe with a bit of rustic look. Coffee was great. Baristas were happily making coffee. Food was good, felt bit more handmade and above the really normal cafe food.
A.
Ginger brulee tart must try,, it is something not to be missed😋😋 . Also awesome pastries & bread. They have more than one branches, check google map.
M. M.
This Bakery is having everything so yummy and flavourful. This is so close to my place. Crowdy on weekends. Coffee there is so creamy and nicely brewed. I had Almond croissant, Lamb Sausage Roll, Ginger Brulee Tart. Must visit place in Sydney.
S. C.
Great bakery 🥯 🥖 🍰
Always busy but easy to understand why!
Amazing breads and pastries
Small corner with artistic style ~
Yummy and Deep 😌
D. W.
Good coffee, great baked goods, way too popular, but that's because people like going to quality places! Nice grassed area to chill out in, just over the road.
E. O.
Delicious sausage roll and flat white! It’s quite a small space with only three tables to sit at inside, and a handful more outside along the sidewalk. However their food and drink are amazing regardless of whether you eat it there or on the go. All of the items they had on display looked amazing, wished I could have tried one of everything!
D. T.
My favourite bakery of all time. Located in a quiet neighbourhood Surry Hills walkable from Central Station. Amazing sausage rolls, chocolate tart and almond rhubarb tart. Very fresh pastries. It was so good I visited a few times in a week for breakfast. Seating spaces are limited, so do get there early and beat the queue!
Y. N.
Located in nice quite neighborhood, amazing beef pie and other sweets. Must go Bakery if you visit Sydney!
B. C.
My go to breakfast spots that close to my home. They have lots of choices of bread, pie, etc. You can tell they use high quality ingredients. The coffee taste really good. This is heaven for winter morning. Definitely miss this place.
I. L.
Voted as one of the best cafe in Sydney. Try their flatwhite and fell in love with it. And also try their pastries. To die for hahaha. Croissants. Located in small neighbourhood. Walking distant from st peter church
This place... Is a hidden gem that locals already know..
J. G.
I've come to this "boulangerie" for almost ten years and still spot on an delivering flavour and excellent pastries. I just got my two favorites, a carrot cake, the best! and a pork fennel sausage roll. The staff always friendly and price is fair, you get what you pay. Coffee is also good, but not the best. Location is excellente, unfortunately right now the light rail is being constructed just infornt of surry hills branch but stil operating as usual. We love this place!
W. S.
Dropped by Bourke Street Bakery for a takeaway on a Sunday morning. There was a queue to order, however, the queue moves quickly. For those who would like to dine-in, probably got to arrive early as the place have limited seats.
Ordered the ginger brûlée tart and it was great! Definitely a must try for ginger lovers. However, the croissant, both plain and almond, were slightly below average for me.
Staff were all friendly!
J. N.
This place is a classic, you've got to go at least once. It's busy for a reason! Classics are the flourless chocolate cake and the sausage fennel roll.
H. N. L.
I was here on a weekday afternoon and ordered the carrot cake as recommended online. I thought the carrot cake was decent but not particularly good. The male server at the counter was a bit aloof. Seats are very limited yet there were still customers occupying the seats inside despite having finished their food and drinks - perhaps the staff could have done something. In the end, two other groups of customers and I had to sit outside in the scorching sun, which didn’t make it very pleasant. (The metal plates used to serve the cake turned burning hot under the sun) perhaps a takeaway would do better in such situations.
J. D.
There's a long queue out the door for a reason! I go for the pork and fennel sausage roll and ginger brulee tart combo and it's a knockout. Two of my favourite things, and the coffee is good too.
H. V.
I love this bakery. Great coffee/ juices & absolutely delightful pastries. It’s a pretty, cozy place in a corner on a leafy street.
L. K.
Great coffee, ginger tart and pork sausage roll are 5 star, service is frustrating slow & depends on who serves you
S. S.
Had an amazing iced coffee and a ginger creme brûlée tart on the weekend with a friend. The only problem I found was that it is such a popular cafe in such a small space- you get very familiar with the other patrons getting their coffee. Despite this I'll definitely be going back for more!
J. D.
Coffee was a bit hot and milkier than usual... But the sausage roll and chicken sweet pea pie had excellent filling and decently crispy pastry.
The new bacon and egg roll wasn't as lovely, with the interior being less dry than expected. Loving the fast and friendly service though, despite the queue that built up!
A. C.
Bacon and egg roll is my new favourite from this famous bakery. Staff are always wonderfully friendly.
S. K.
Good coffee. The carrot cake was simply delicious. Small place but have outdoor seating. Definitely a must visit eatery in Sydney.
J. R.
Fantastic bakery with really great products. The staff are friendly and helpful and they do great coffee too. A really good location, it's a great place to catch up if you're going for a walk.
K. C.
The original and definitely the best of the Bourke St bakery chain. Delicious breads, tarts and sausage rolls.
H. C.
Best vintage cafe and first origin of famous Bourke St Bakery...Inside only have 3 tables, provided with newspaper. Good place have coff and reading in morning. Down side, some flies around sometimes inside the shop. Outside have some tables too. Amazing
J. E.
Perfect coffee and great food, which seems a little overpriced but is worth it for the quality. BUT!! the shop is way, way, too small, and the line is often 30 people long and snakes around the corner. They still get 4 stars though because it's the best coffee in Surry Hills IMO.
L. M.
Very lovely small bakery - everything smells and tastes wonderful
S. Y.
Excellent breakfast options, the sausage rolls and pies/tarts are my favorite. I tried the bacon and egg roll and ginger creme brulee this time, and it was excellent! Good value for money, but it does get pretty crowded so get there early or on weekdays.
J. L.
Services is great and coffee is nice! Tiny little seating area so it is best to do take away. Pies are hits and misses, I've had a few soaggy ones but other varieties of bakeries are brilliant!
m. c.
Covid safety measures are in place ✔️
Depends on the time, the queue can be quite long.
Their Rhubarb Danish Bread is the best I had so far. 🥰
V. S.
Good coffee, nice stuff. I love muffins with mix of berries or raspberry with chocolate there. Always fresh pastries and bread 👍
W. H.
The best chicken pie in the country - don’t @ me.
D. M.
Great bread. Great pains aux chocolats and croissants (also, they’re correctly spelled in French which is nice). Always busy! Sit outside in summer or inside if you can find a seat - only 3 tables! Staff is super nice :)
J.
Haven't been in a long time but went the other afternoon and the service was friendly and quick and the food and coffee was amazing as usual. Had a large coffee, toasted beef sandwich and a fennel and cherry loaf to take home. The bread was a bit on the burnt side but still great tasting bread. Will be back.
R. S.
Missing the veggie sandwich those one labelled as ratatouille anyway my five stars for those weeks now goodbye until that sandwich comeback 😢🥲😆
C. K.
Just popped by to grab a lemon curd tart and it was delicious! Not a lot of options left at the end of the day though. Would definitely want to come back and try other pastries
X. C.
Its a must visit! Very crowded since early morning and sitting area is very limited but the bread n pastry are awesome! Try their ham and cheese croissant!!
L. C.
Easily the best bread in the area, if not the whole of Sydney… and always served with a smile!
M. H.
Amazing little quiet place with wonderful and local staff that have smiles on their faces and friendly hello when you come in. The tarts are to die for and I hear the rolls are as well. Absolutely a fantastic place for a nice quick breakfast, highly recommended.
G.
Completed their bread baking classes - AMAZING!!!
And we continue to get fantastic results at home! Thanks guys!
E.
Every time I go to a cafe, have a pain au chocolat and this one is the best. Love the tart too. So good.
T. C.
Amazing quality. Sausage roll and cream brûlée are highly recommended
B. K.
Busy, chaotic and can be confusing experience if you've never been before.
Their baked items are laid out all over the shop so you have to be quite patient with people shopping with their eyes.
Else refer to the main board which has all their hot foods like pies, sandwiches and sausage rolls.
S. S.
I eat every Saturday breakfast here. I walk 5 min from my home to this gem of a place. Quintessential Aussie bakery and the best sausage rolls and pies in the entire country.
E. S.
One of the most popular bakery. They often have queue but the service is fast. The bread was fresh and tasty.
B. T.
Very quick service. The queue moved along really well and smooth. Coffee and food came out nice, hot n fresh. Always happy to travel to eat their pastries.
M. G. M. (.
Best bakery and the best bread 🥖 in Surry Hills! Olives 🫒 and rosemary is the one you should try. 😋
E. S. D.
Tiny little place but popular with the locals. It's sometimes hard to navigate the place. Plenty of selections but hard to chill and relax with the amount of people queuing up or trying to get on top of each other !
m. a.
Go to place for breads. Always a queue outside which tells you how much a neighborhood favorite this is
T. L.
Still same top quality bread and treats, well done Bourke Street Bakery
S. S.
A tiny cafe but packs a punch! The pies are supremely delicious and did really enjoy the ginger brulee tart.
J. S.
We recently moved from London. We choose Surry Hills to be near to good food and near to this bakery in particulate. It was a good decision.
R. T.
Incredible mouth watering food, the pies & sausage rolls are the absolute best & the cakes & breads are also so good. The coffees, juices, chocolate milk & teas are perfect & the staff here are fantastic, working away feeding people that are often lined up out the door. Beautiful food, outstanding drinks & sensational service, love it!
D. V. H.
The regular croissant was GREAT!
The almond croissant with some kind of paste inside was extremely sweet and heavy. Next time I'll just have the regular croissant.
C. C.
My Airbnb in Sydney was only a couple blocks from this lovely place, so it became my go-to breakfast spot before venturing into the city each morning. Amazing sausage rolls! Boyfriend loved the lamb roll, as well. Croissants are flaky and buttery and melt-in-your mouth good. Their muffins are not traditional muffins, in my opinion. They're a bit more dense and have a crunchier top, which I actually loved! Although there's often a line, the staff take your order quickly and you usually don't wait more than a few minutes.
D. R.
Absolutely loved their veg sandwich.Perfect balanced taste
s. b.
Decent lunch time food at reasonable prices, service competent and very friendly. Mixed crowd from the offices around, good atmosphere.
D. S.
Visited this place after a while, same amazing food and service...the best place for a quick bite...!!!
I. E.
Great bakery, everything is fresh and crispy.
Service is not good at all, you may also have to wait on a long queue. But it's worth it!
J. K.
The ginger creme brulee tart was amazing! Good coffee too. The only negative was the lack of seating at the time I was there.
C. A.
I do love this place and have been going for years. A former lover of their Sourdough and croissants... as the Bourke St Empire and number of stores increased the quality of the bread has decreased. We still eat and buy here but no longer think it is the amazing bakery it was. Staff are always great and the sausage rolls still wonderful.
B. W.
Some novel and well-produced items. Ginger spiced creme brulee satisfied the need for something sweet and the raspberry meringue was something different.
M. S.
Fabulous but be prepared to line up on the weekend.
L. S. G.
Favourite bakery in Sydney! This place is worth lining up for, which is good because the line is often out the door. Pastries, sour dough loaves, muffins, pies etc... all of it is the best of the best. Good coffee too! There are only a few tables inside, but more tables outside.
A. S.
My favourite weekend joint for home fresh cooked pastries
N. M.
Lamb and Harissa sausage rolls are spectacular
J. R.
Bourke St Bakery would have to be one of my favourites when it comes to comfort food. I love the high quality produce and ingredients that goes into their food. They’ve got a consistent taste across all their bakeries that gives you a sense of satisfaction every time you take a bite. They also have freshly squeezed juice to go, chocolate milk, bottled coffee and fresh coffee! Try a pie or two and one of there rolls! You can’t go wrong with their pastries also!
S. H.
Bread - so - good. Smooth coffee, great food/snacks. Sour dough is of course fantastic here.
M. N.
Absolutely amazing place!!! the most delicious bread and lovely people behind the counter. Really great spot :)
L. D.
The cakes and tarts were nice but what stood out the most were their delicious pies and rolls. Oh my goodness. I think their sage, fennel and pork sausage roll was the best sausage roll I've had in my life. I'm ruined.
M. L.
Love the lamb sausage roll and potato bacon pie! Always a line but worth the wait
P. P.
Amazing, perfect coffee and very nice selection of pastries, breads and croissants. Highly recommend!
C. T.
Bourke Street Bakery have been my local for a few years now. Great service and food!
S. F.
I think putting the hype aside, you do get top quality pastery here. The line could be an issue if you want coffee or bread to go, but for our visit it didn't matter because we were just out to hang out with our mates
M. B.
What can I say! Literally everything the good folks at Bourke St Bakery produce is mouth watering. Cakes, pies and coffee are all quality. Could do with more GF options but honestly this place is probably one of the best bakeries in Sydney. Worth the queue.
L. G.
Well I walked quite a bit, after reading reviews of the place. And I must say, the place did not disappoint me, to say the least. A fifteen minute walk from the central station, this place has a comfy feel to it. The small bakery sure does house a wide range of deliciousness, though the lamb sausage and mocha is all I had space for, in my tiny stomach. The sausage roll was a delight, and the mocha was different. Although it tasted strange in the first go, the flavour grew on me with every sip-until I began to love it, and left craving for more. The servings in simple steel plates and glasses reminds me of places back home, and adds to the comfort of the place in ways that are better felt than described. Would highly recommend it for anyone visiting Sydney.
A.
Always busy which is a good sign as they have most amazing pastry and bread in the city. Getting coffee on the way to work is a mission as there is always a queue but going there for a sit down coffee and some fresh croissant is a treat!
R. Y.
Coffee is a guaranteed 5 stars and the sandwiches along with the fine selection of pies is just spectacular. Different types of bread and other sorts of delicacies that are unique and amazing. Definitely coming back
M. F.
The smells coming from this bakery will have your mouth watering long before you even get to the door. The pies and sausage rolls are sensational as are all the pastries and cakes. They also make a mean coffee. Be prepared to line up some days but it is well worth any short wait you incur as you will definitely leave satisfied.
J. G.
Cute little bakery with excellent coffee and good European Style bread and pastries. The bakery offers only limited indoor seating. A few benches along the street can be used to enjoy your yummy food outdoors. The lines in front of the shop show that the bakery is loved by locals as well as visitors.
J. H. P.
Love the shepherd's pie & hot chocolate. But the coffee was average.
P. A.
Truly the best bakery around in Surry Hills. You have all kind of variety. Great flour. Croissant are really good, there is some table around to enjoy those delicious pastries.
R. F.
Always worth a visit. Never mind the line, it goes very quickly. Some of the best pastries in Sydney and consistently good coffee. Being so popular I don't want to like it but it deserves the popularity.
R. A.
Would recommend the sausage roll, brulee tarts, croissant and soy linseed sourdough. No seats atm due to covid but the park across the road is a pretty good picnic spot.
M. L.
An excellent place for some nice pastries and coffee.
Take care though, the queue to get in can be quite long and go around the corner on a busy day.
Make sure that you have your order set in your mind before you get to the counter especially on a busy day.
All that said once you do get your order the pastries and coffee are both worth it and you will enjoy them. There are too many good items for me to recommend just one or two
R. N. (.
Lovely coffee, pastries and tarts. Efficient and reasonably friendly service.. mainly caters for local customers..
Nov 2018 update: The shop was busy even during off peak hours for a very reason... we had 3 different pies, the signature creme brulee tart and also tried a chocolate tart and all were exemplary. Coffee and iced chocolate milk were above average too.
I. C.
Love this place. Great coffee and bakery products
C. M.
A landmark destination, a true Viet / French artisan bakehouse that's got totally awesome fresh quality. There is a queue for a reason. Best almond croissant ever...
D. T.
Absolutely loved their beetroot & wagyu beef sandwich which was my all time favourite, but they removed it from the menu and now I can only remember good ol’ times when I could enjoy its deliciousness. Please bring it back 🥪
J. E.
Favorite place to pop in for a croissant and coffee. Every pastry is heavenly and always fresh. Love how friendly the workers are. I always get the chocolate croissants and they are always perfect. Quick service and excellent overall experience. Love the location too.
S. S.
This quaint and cozy cafe located in a quiet Surry hills neighborhood is a perfect place to sit down and sip a cup of amazing flat white and a delicious creme brulee tart. The place also offers delicious pork rolls..one can literally bite into the delicious tender pork wrapped in crunchy puff. One word to describe the experience - brilliant!
Z. L.
Said to the counter I want a potato and rosemary sourdough but found out it was the raisin and fennel. If you didn’t get it, ASK. Don’t just randomly give something else. Average to be fair, better and nicer bakeries in the area.
M. B.
Hot chocolate really good and most important: the bread. 🥖🍞One of the best bread I can find in Sydney. And as a French person I’m usually really peaky with bread. Their baguette is just perfect! ❤️ Pain au chocolat and croissant are also very tasty. I particularly love the fog and cranberries bread. The perfect bread to serve with cheese platter. The brioche is great! Not too sweet exactly as I like it. I also tried the ricotta cheesecake and some passion fruit meringue pie, it was food but not excellent.
T. M.
Walked in there to pick up some Saturday morning quiches on a beautiful Surry Hills day. Bit of a queue, but they get through them quickly. I stopped to the strains of The Go-Betweens on the sound system, and the staff were lovely as usual. Wish I could give it 6 out of 5.
J. T.
Great bakery and coffee shop that is nestled in the heart of Surry Hills. Bear in mind that it opens at 7AM, so that will thwart any early morning plans. The coffee is very reasonably priced at $3.50 for a regular sized cup.
The shop front itself is small but there is plenty of outdoor seating available
D. O.
You can take my pasta, my rice and my sweets but don’t you even think about taking my bread from me! And this bakery sells the best bread in town. On the weekend it can get quite busy because the place is tiny but the queue goes fast. And a little patience will get you to a bread heaven! Staff is very polite and helpful.

Who doesn't love Bourke Street Bakery...? No one!!! 🤷
L. H.
One of my favorite places to eat in Sydney.
The sausage rolls and pies are a mix between gourmet goodness and home made yumness.
Sandwiches are good too but get in before 2pm when the food just about runs out.
A. K.
I've been to Bourke Street Bakery a dozen or so times and never had a bad experience. Their pies and cakes are some of the best in town. They have a good range of bread too though I've only ever bought the same loaf. The seating is a bunch of stools and tables around the side of the shop right on the open footpath, which isn't for everyone and seems to work because you don't get too many cars but for me I'd rather go for take away.
s. m.
Pork and fennel sausage roll is amazing most of the time... sometimes a little dry inside. Ginger brulee tart is heavenly (bring back the berry one). Staff are a bit "don't care". Almond croissant ok. Coffee good.
M. V.
Great little bakery with a wide range of lunch options. They are open almost always, very convenient when you want to get a good bread on Sunday. Their sausage rolls and brioche bread are delicious. Most of the sandwiches will make you come back. They are busy most of the time, but waiting is never long. The outside seating is swarmed by pigeons with no shame though. Be ready to fight them off.
D. Y.
L love this Bakery, my favourite is the ginger tart!!!
R. M.
Where the empire began. Wonderful baked treats from a tiny storefront. Casual service often ram packed with customers. Very good bread and cakes and famous sausage rolls (pork and fennel is the go).
Not my favorite coffees but I am snobby and out of touch - though not bad by any stretch. Not inexpensive...decent value.
M. H.
Simply the best bakery in whole Sydney.
I visit this place almost every morning with my boyfriend and it really caters for all needs as it offers both sweet and savoury baked goods. My boyfriend wasn't so keen on checking this place out at first as he doesn't like sweet things, but he was left amazed after our visit. Their bread with olives is something you should definitely try if you don't like sweet things and in case you don't have a problem with a bit of sugar in you food you have a very wide selection of tarts, cookies and all kinds of pastries. Even if you decide to try something new you won't make a mistake as everything there tastes amazing.
As for the service all the staff are very polite and welcoming. They are always ready to offer you the daily specials and recommend you their own favourites. The most important thing is that everything is freshly backed and not only their food, but also their drinks are excellent.
Overall a great bakery, which offers delicious food at reasonable prices.
S. L.
We always visit the Bourke Street Bakery when we visit Sydney. The breads and pastries are legendary and we love the pork and fennel sausage rolls (with house made tomato sauce). We think that the coffee is pretty good too. On this visit we bought a baguette to take away and it was as good as any we've had in France!
E. T.
The original and the best! Sydney gastronomic icon. Love this place! Go to bakery for our family for over a decade and half. Fantastic sourdough, dangerously delicious pastries, muffins and cakes. Also to die for lamb sausage rolls. Handy bicycle parking right outside. Great spot! 👍👍👍♥️
M. M.
Great atmosphere, excellent eats. I gobbled up two gourmet pork and fennel sausage rolls, two passionfruit meringues, some pane di casa, three espresso and a croissant. Following those morsels, I had a fairly substantial lunch. I'll be back.
C. L.
Came here with some girlfriends one weekend after having a nice long lunch. We walked from central to look for this place due to its reviews and the walk was well worth it!
Before even reaching the corner of the bakery you can smell the amazing scent of their sausage rolls! As you walked closer every second table seemed to have had one if their tables! Too bad We had had a big lunch! But there's always room for dessert! We choose 3 different pastries/cakes - flour less chocolate cake, raspberry and chocolate tart and lemon tart. The chocolate cake was very soft and fluffy but I felt the chocolate taste was not full enough, however the tarts were wonderful! The fresh raspberries complemented the chocolate tart so well and the lemon tart was well balanced!
Next time I go back I must try the sausage rolls and get another tart!!
A. W. (.
One of the best Bakery's in Town. There is a line up but it does go quite fast. Creme Brulee tarts are to die for and their sausage rolls are fantastic. Once in service is fast, if you know what you want. Something they should do, put a menu on the window before you go in, that way you can see what they have to offer - as its tiny inside. Staff are super friendly and the food is amazing.
T. T.
Love the coffee, enough bitter not too strong or to weak just perfect specially in the winter or autumn time. Love the pork sausages, the most tasteful, mouthful and juicy meat inside. The neighbourhood is so fine a wonderful place to have your coffee outdoor watching the trees across the road. Make you feel so peaceful and people are so nice around there. If you have dogs it is a very pet friendly environment.
M. S.
This is one of my favorite places in Sydney. Not only are the pies, treats, and coffees excellent, but the staff is incredible. George is one of the friendliest people! Even when it’s extremely busy and crowded, he always manages to strike up a conversation with the customers about their days, life, etc. He also tries to learn all the regular customers’ names! So nice!
l.
For fresh baked goods this is the place. Both pies and sausage rolls are delicious, as well as the pastries!
J. C.
Just everything they do is awesome!! The bread, the sausage rolls, pies, sweets, coffee!!! So good!!!! Thanks to all at Bourke St for making the world a better, more delicious place.
T. P.
One of my favourite bakeries in Sydney. Everything here is awesome, the bread, the pies, the tarts and even the pizza. Attention to detail is paid to every item on their diverse menu and everything is made in house, including the juices. The coffee is also great, making this place a triple threat. The queues here can look insane but it's well worth it. There's plenty of seating at and around this place so it's a great spot to find breakfast, brunch or lunch.
S. G.
My son wanted me to report more than 6 stars- he loved the passion fruit meringue and ginger brule tart so much! Excellent bakery in lovely Surry Hills!
G. W.
Low key but delicious. Ginger Brûlée tart is the best.
G. P.
This is an amazing place to come too, i would suggest that everyone tries this place at least once. The foods are very creative but still taste delicious and the proportions are very filling. Their coffee is really good I love their coffee.
M. N.
The Pear danish was baked to perfection, the puff pastry impossibly glazed and crispy on the outside while fluffy and buttery soft in the middle with a medallion of poached fruit in the centre. The coffee is good too. There's always a line out the door especially on sunny mornings, the cool weather doesn't seem to deter anyone but the line moves fast and the service is prompt and friendly. If I do find the line moving slowly I usually just stare at the many different loaves of bread on display in the window and try to think of an excuse to bring one home.
S. C.
Definitely the place to go to for ANY baked good you can think of, dropped by to try their tarts and the ginger brûlée blew my mind!

L. T.
All the pastries are amazing; pork and fennel sausage roll and beef may pie are perfection. My personal fave would have to be their ginger brulee tart and would recommend that to anyone who enjoys a hint of ginger in their foods.
H. D.
Tell me what else you need
This tart can make everything happens
J. T.
If you are serious about your tarts, then you need to go directly to any Bourke Street Bakery outlet, and order their ginger bruleé tart. It's amazing. That's all I'm gonna say about it. While you're there, I hear the pork and fennel sausage roll is pretty good too.
L. C.
Popped in for a takeaway as we heard this place has amazing desserts that cannot be missed. TOTALLY AGREE. Ginger creme brulee was amazing...... The texture of the creme, ugh to die for. Ginger or not, get the creme brulee.
We also had a carrot cake. Loved it as the cream cheese filling wasn't too sweet and there actually were carrot bits all over the cake unlike a lot of other bakeries where the carrot has sunken to the bottom.
So worth the trip here.
F. F.
Delightful bread, really tasty pastry and great barista coffee! I highly recommend this branch as this is the original one - they are now scattered all around the CBD and inner suburbs, which demonstrates the quality of their products.
Try their potato-rosemary bread 🍞 Me as a German love good bread, and this bread certainly lives up to my standards when it comes to bread 🙃
V. A.
We loved this little cozy cafe the make very good coffe.
S. R.
Best catering and food ....... good prices for very good food. Perfect communication and order. Definitely would recommend their bread, coffee, cakes and tarts
J. M.
Great quality and value, queues are very long though
H. W.
Great breads. The sausage rolls were nice. The passionfruit meringue tart was disappointing - pastry not short enough and ratio of curd to meringue was wrong.
V. A.
Went there once and absolutely loved the place. The coffee is really good as well as the pastries. Not much space to sit in but totally worth the visit as they also have some tables outside.
J. G.
Best bakery around hands down. Pork and fennel sausage rolls are exceptional, so are the crossiants and gourmet pies. There'll usually always be a line but dont fret they serve and delivery very quickly. Parking on most streets nearby. Not much seating though theres a tiny park around the corner that's suitable.
K. K.
A great (but tiny!) bakery with nice coffee, delicious pastries and bread. The bread with potato and rosemary is particularly good and definitely worth a try. As much as I Iike the baked goods from Bourke Street Bakery, I do think it's a bit overrated and over-hyped. They need a bigger premises to accommodate the crowds of people and allow room to sit down for a coffee and a snack out of the cold and wind.
L. T.
A little corner bakery that offers fresh and delicious mouth watering pastries and breads. Just had a croissant this morning and its perfect, nice crunch on the outside and buttery and fluffy in the inside. I also love their hot cross loaves - only available during Easter!
P. D.
When a street in a place like Surry Hills is known because of it's bakery, that speaks volumes about the joint. An artisan bakery well know for their bakes, variety of true blue Aussie rolls and delicate shining cakes. Construction workers, corporate slaves, instagram ladies, you name it, they are all there! Them rolls, pies and the cakes melt in you mouth, ooohh they MELT and along the way melt your hearts. Prices are normal, for rolls would do you a damage of around $6 max and coffee is cheap at $3.Try, try all for you won't repent!
K. T.
Great selection of fruit and sourdough bread.
S. W.
This place has some of the best bread and pastries going around - but it doesn't come particularly cheap either. Fortunately, I bet most would argue that it is worth the premium!
However, be aware that this has a tiny shop front and you'll likely be facing a short queue if you stop by to grab something on a Saturday or Sunday morning.
J. R.
Exceptional place to enjoy a coffee and a nice breakfast. Strongly recommend their croissants. Staff are extremely nice and friendly, I work nearby and pay them a visit almost everyday. Probably my favourite coffee place in Sydney!
O. O.
There's a line going up the street in anticipation of this bakery for a reason. Everything I've eaten here is fabulous, in particular their home made sausage rolls..they really know how to gourmet-up a standard dish. Fresh loaves, savoury and sweet treats, good people watching and tasty coffee all combine to make this a banging bakery.
M. B.
Been going here for years. Coffee is great..most of the time. Does depend on who makes it. Little cakes and pies are great. Bread sometimes is very airy with holes in it which I buy every 3 days.
T. W.
I can never go pass the shop without picking up some pastries. I love their rhubarb danish, well balanced sweet and sour flavours from rhubarb combined with light and airy pastries is the perfect companion to a cup of coffee in the morning. A quick glance at their menu you'll see that one thing this bakery doesn't lack is variety. Besides different types of bread and pastries, you can find anything from chicken, sweet potato, pea & lime pickle pie, spinach, ricotta & corn quiche, to pizza and sandwiches that changes regularly.
H. V.
Saturday morning run always ends with a stop at Bourke Street Bakery. The coffee is great and the sausage roll is so tasty. There's not much room to dine, so don't be disappointed if you have to get take-away.
M. B.
I cannot walk past this place without the buttery pastry smell wafting in the air dragging me inside for a quick bite! The sausage rolls are both amazing and if you can't choose just get both. You won't regret it. The brulee tart is a great finish so grab one of those for later. The queue can be intimidating but it moves pretty quick and you won't be waiting too long.
J. B.
Nice little bakery :) good food and lovely costumers
D. H.
You know a place is good when even the locals are willing to wait in line. BSB has earned it's reputation.
Tried the lamb sausage roll, rhubarb danish and ricotta cheesecake. Both sweet and savoury options are satisfying.
Service is quick, even including the queue, but it is also worth arriving earlier, for a less busy, relaxed experience
J. T.
Friendly staff, a good vibe and decent coffee but our experience with their food has been really poor. We just had their version of a bacon and egg roll which substituted a fried egg with a rubbery and flavourless frittata type square - it just didn't work unfortunately.
F. R.
The ginger crème brulé tart lived up to the hype. The food was good.
T. T.
10 reasons this place is a must-visit cafe in Sydney:
1. cheap - great quality at such great prices
2. star quality pastries and tarts and desserts
3. great coffee
4. lovely to locals and non-locals like me
5. everything is made fresh!
6. they even have a cookbook! :) It was definitely worth investing in
7. specialise in both savoury and sweet
8. they make their own breads as well
9. there are a few of these bakeries around the Sydney area, for your convenience
10. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack, dessert, morning tea - they cater for the lot!
S. L. M.
Delicious food. There was a line out the door but it moved quickly and the service was great. Lots of fun - very glad we stopped. I'll be dreaming of that tiny, perfect lemon curd tart for weeks...
C. C.
This has been my favourite meeting point for a few years now! Everyone can be tempted by their delicious tarts (my favourite is the lemon curd) and you can even try their cookbook - everything I have tried has turned out just like you buy it in the shop! A real favourite bakery.
J. L.
Their lemon cake slices, their Raspberry n chocolate muffins n their Carrot n Walnut cake slice are truly devine, the best I've tasted by far!
L. L.
This is by far my favourite bakery! Best lamb sausage roll and tarts in town.
Even though there's always a queue, but it moves really quickly. Once you get some food from there you can then have a picnic at the Centennial Park.
k. p.
Awesome mini rolls.! I get the mini savoury catering for my colleagues occasionally and they all love it to the core. Best breakfast, great quality & value for money.
A. S.
BEST CARROT CAKE EVER! This place is a cult in Sydney, Not only is the bread cooked to perfection but the sweet and savoury baked goods are heavenly. If you haven't been here, put it at the top of your list,
C. K.
Pork and Fennel sausage rolls are to die for as well as their amazing cakes and sweets.
C. P.
Great bakery... Sausage roll is to die for.
T. N.
The place is so tiny, so that's why there always looks like a huge line up because only 5 customers can fit in there. But the wait is worth it. Come after 10AM if you want to try their famous pies. They are to die for. Also, if you fancy yourself as a baker, they also sell their own in-house cook book. I'm not usually a coffee drinker, but I'll definitely buy one at Bourke Street Bakery.
B.
Delicious pies (vegetarian pie is so yuum) 🥧 and best coffee ☕️ + service is amazing! Super nice team, love going back there when I'm in the area! X
D. K.
The best muffins in town. More often than not, with fruit muffins there is more muffin and very little fruit. That is not the case here. Their pear and rhubarb muffin has huge chunks of both and is simply divine. Otherwise I also choose a pizza option and their chocolate milk is made in house.
Do not be out off by the queue outside. The store counter is quite shallow respective to the size of the store - only about 6 customers will be queued inside.
L. K.
This amazing place remains open in spite of the horrendous crime being perpetrated against Devonshire Street and Surry Hills. What an utter gem this place is, great coffee, wonderful baked goods and atmosphere. Let's hope it can keep going once the tramway barges it's way along that little Street.
J. J.
The chocolate-berry muffins are possibly the greatest muffins in the world. Just warm them up a little and they’re perfect. More of a take away cafe, there are tables but only a couple.
D. S.
Great food (favourites include the Lamb & Harissa Sausage Roll and the frangipani tart). Coffee is also excellent. Tiny place so often the queues can be difficult to navigate, but you get that. Small price to pay. An institution.
J. A.
There is talk that staff are rude.
I guess it is glass half empty thing, it's what you make it.
Great shop, gorgeous food, I found the staff fine.
Chocolate croissant, chocolate tart, pizza, baguette and the fresh juice I can recommend in person.
Still some ways to go through the full menu list.
Yes you get what you pay for.
Grab a bite, a coffee and a seat and what the world go buy as you chat with friends.
J
V. X.
One of my favourite go to cafes in Surry Hills. I love their sausage rolls (I don't usually like sausage rolls) with the buttery flaky pastry and tasty innards. The tarts are fabulous as well
G. A.
Well many of restauranteur have made outlandish claims of producing the best sausage roll in Australia.
But Burke St delivers..
Is yet to dissapoint. Fruit loaf devine and if you are looking to feed your sweet tooth you will be in for a treat.9
I. C.
The lamb sausage rolls are to die for , though, nearly everything on the menu is great.
Make sure you get some of the bread on the way out - fab price for the best sourdough... especially love the olive and rosemary sourdough
M. W.
Best bread, pastries and coffee. Always fresh and never dissapoints. Try their carrot cake and ginger tart.
K. C.
Best carrot cake in the world, also very good sausage rolls. We go here so often now my dogs stops at their front door even if we're just passing by!
D. M.
The lamb sausage roll is fantastic. The chicken and sweet potato pie is a highlight. Did I mention they do really good breads also. Love this bakery
O. L.
Great variety of breads, a great place for a weekend breakfast. The sourdough bread of all kinds is great but especially the Quinoa bread. It can get very busy at times, so make sure you buy some bread home or book a cooking class.
F. O.
We droped by with the family to pick up some great bread loaves, some pastries and vegetarian baked food for a New Year's home party, and had spur and cappuccino and lattes at table outside.
Only a short wait. When you get inside choose quickly so you don't make others wait, staff will bring your drinks out to your table.
P. S.
Amazing. Best friggin sausage roll I've ever had in my life. Jealous of people that live in the neighbourhood that can get fresh bread everyday.
M. W.
This place has the best bread I have ever tasted. It was busy when I ventured in but the staff were really cool and got to me really quickly. I will make a beeline for here next time I'm around. Mouth watering tucker.
R. C.
Amazing pies and sausage rolls. However, i'm gluten intolerant and there aren't any options for me anymore :(
S. A.
Always great coffee, and a great range of freshly baked pastries, bread, sandwiches, quiche pies and sausage rolls
J. M.
Absolutely love Bourke St Bakery, it's my favourite in all of Surry Hills. The food is always fresh, and the bread they sell is better than most other cafes and stores around the suburb
p. c.
It’s 10.30am on a Saturday and this is a familiar sight at Bourke Street Bakery in Surry Hills. 10.30am is when the hot foods like lamb sausage rolls and beef pies are fresh out from the oven. The queue can be long but this bakery has the system down packed. Almost everyone in the queue knows what they want and so service is quick and efficient.
A. I.
Delicious breakfast and solid coffee. Also great value.
E. M.
Oh the pigeons! Snag a table outside just for the fun of watching other people get harassed by the very aggressive pigeons trying to eat their meat pies...
Pity they haven't found a way to get rid of those flying rats, because the pastries are delicious, the coffee is good, the price is right. It's extremely busy on weekends, but the staff are super efficient so you really shouldn't have to wait more than about 10 minutes to be served.
S. R.
Most wonderful pastries, coffee and breads. Love this part of Bourke St as well. Good happy staff. Great vibe.
A. P.
Most of the items were sold out however the quiche and the ginger brulé tart left were amazing, definitely worth the visit but be prepared to take your items as takeaway as it has a small seating area and is usually full
S. K.
The food and coffee are great, but the last 2 times we went here we got major attitude from the barista because we were waiting for our coffees outside and didn't hear them call our name. Firstly there isnt much room to stand inside to wait for your takeaway coffee, and secondly if I were the barista I would use some common sense and stick my head out of the door and call for the coffee. We would not be shown this type of attitude at most other cafes where the protocol would be for takeaway orders to wait outside (and to note, the attitude only came from the barista; everyone else was fine). The great savoury and sweet snacks are definitely the redeeming feature of this place. Or you could just go to the Rosebery location where they are much nicer.
D. L.
This is one of Sydney's most famous bakeries, with a queue often out the door.
It is small and situated on the corner of Bourke and Devonshire Streets, there is a little seating are outside or across the road in the park.
All there food on offer is über famous from their sourdough, olive and rosemary bread to their pork and fennel sausage roll.
I've been coming here for years and although wonderful the reason I don't give this 5 stars is as the bakery has become.more famous the quality of the ingredients has lessened.
(The original sourdough and Olive bread used to use black olives now uses green. The original lamb and nut sausage roll used to use pine nuts now uses almond) Perhaps a small change in baking but a big change in taste.
P. G. W.
Came here straight away from the airport after landing in Sydney and what a pleasant fluke! Absolute quality and friendly service with a local crowd - the staff new the names of about half the customers they served while we were there.
I’d go back for another flat white and Reuben while in Sydney!
G. G.
They have the best veggie pies 😊
C. P.
Tried their beef pie and a couple of sausage rolls. Good but not great, probably not worth lining up for. Also, given the queues it's a bit ridiculous not to have the menu displayed outside - people literally could not decide what to order until they were at the counter.
E. v. d. L.
This place is famous for a reason. I know the pork and fennel sausage roll is raved about, but my favourite is the moroccan lamb! This place gets incredibly busy on a Saturday morning and it's up to you to find a table, so make sure you've nabbed one before you get in the line to order!
L. D.
Read about the nations best sausage roll and had to give this sausage a go due to being a sausage lover. Quite nice indeed. Lots of hippidy dippidy hipsters around the area which makes for fun viewing also
E. B.
Bottom Line: I don’t think I’ve met one person who doesn’t like this place who has been.
There is usually a line around the block, but it goes pretty quickly and it is most definitely worth it. Come early morning on a week day to beat the crowd.
We’ve loved everything we’ve tried. My “go to” is the ham and cheese croissant. A buttery and delicious croissant sliced in half and pressed over a slice of melted cheese and salty ham. SO DELICIOUS.
The tarts are lovely...all surrounded by a flakey crust. We’ve had the lemon custard and the rhubarb creme brulee. Both were delicious, but the I think the creme brulee is a can’t miss.
Also not to be overlooked are the muffins. The mixed berry is my favorite.
To drink - both the cold chocolate milk (shake it well to let the chunks of whipped cream mix in) and the hot chocolate (rich dark chocolate flavor) are yummy.
J. S. A.
Bourke Street is the best bakery in Sydney, I think. Food and coffee are also great. Gets too crowded to turn up sit down and eat on the weekends (unless you turn up in the afternoon) but even then it's great if you just wanna turn up and buy some bread or takeaway things.
A loaf of sourdough from Bourke Street Bakery doesn't cost more than a loaf of processed rot from Woolworths. Makes no sense to me, but hey - take advantage!
K. L.
Simply the best bakery around. The sandwiches are absolutely incredible, the lamb sausage roll is one of the best things on the planet, the ginger creme brulee tart is scrumptious and the mocha and hot chocolate is the best around.
R. K.
We tried the passionfruit tart - the tart base was perfect, and passionfruit curd was so delicious and fragrant.
Their croissant was a massive dissappointment, not enough butter, very dry and hard to swallow, the bread and sausage rolls look legit. Need to come back
M. P.
My partner and I sat in the park eating our array of baked goods (there was so much good looking stuff so we just got a bunch of everything), and both agreed that that was the BEST DAMN CROISSANT we could ever imagine. The chocolate and sour cherry cookie was also a dream.
J. W.
I've been my to this place for years. Lamb and almond sausage roll is amazing. Coffee quality variable. Breads are incredibly good
K. H.
This is a regular stop off when I'm in Surry Hills. The meat pies, sausage rolls (especially the veggie one) and quiches are decadent and a step above ordinary. The bread is fresh, the line moves quickly and there's always a good crowd!
J. C.
Brilliant coffee. Beautiful bread and pastries. Muffins and sausage rolls are what they are most famous for. The hot-cross-loaves during Easter time are incredible too.
K. F.
This bakery is hands down the best one in whole Sydney. I just love their pastries and little tarts. Unfortunately I noticed that the staff have become a bit impolite compared to my previous experiences. Hope it was just a one time thing.
V.
OMG! DEEElicious delights. The almond croissants are to die for - oh not to mention the portuguese tarts and coffee too! This is one of sydneys best bakeries. You can also custom order for a event from a great range. You will never be disappointed! A must in the area!
Z. B.
I'm a huge fan of their sandwiches, even more than their sweet bits and pieces. The bread is so flavourful and they don't skimp on the fillings. It's a little pricey but completely worth it.
J. D.
Organic chicken pie, lemon tart, ginger tart and the kransky just to name a few. Nice and cosy if you managed to get a seat inside during winter. Friend staff, quick fast service can't really complain.
P. K.
An absolutely amazing place, I come here every week for some bread and coffee. Always busy, always vibrant. Must see and try. Don't get scared by the line, it goes on quickly.
T. W.
Can't go wrong with the Cakes, Pastries, and Coffees here. Highly recommended.
L. D.
Very small and quaint. Great chunky meat pies even better sausage rolls. It was raining but will go back on a sunny day to sit outside.
S. K.
One of the best places for spoils, if you can afford it and can bother waiting in line. Not so friendly with kids or pets, the line and lack of personal space really does intrude, and the staff overworked by high demand. But pass that, truly amazing food and dessert anywhere in Sydney. Definitely one of the very best.
G. M.
I may have reached a bit late but this bakery seems to be a bit overrated from what I read below. The selections were very limited at 3pm though I'll say the chocolate croissant was quite wonderful.
T. B.
Probably the best bakery I've ever been to, with a great choice, great service and a reasonable price. I don't drink coffee but it doesn't even matter, the bread (and especially sausage rolls!) make up for it!!
P. L.
Good selection of pastry and cakes. Can expect a bit of a wait in the morning. Have added this bakery to the rotation of cafes with great sausage rolls!
L. S.
So good these tarts, try the ginger crème brulé and the lemon tart - amazing! Coffee is very good too and if you have time during the week in the afternoon, you won't need to queue.
J. G. K.
Primarily a takeout place, Bourke St Bakery offers 3 small tables indoors and several tables outdoors (currently looking out at construction of the light rail). Food and coffee taste really great here.
M. L.
What’s not to like about this legendary bakery in Surry Hills? My personal favourites are the creme brûlée, carrot cake, lamb sausage roll and then baguettes. Almost always a queue...
E. T.
This is a perfect breakfast spot. Really fortunate to have it a few blocks my apartment. Line can get long but isn't terrible if you show up right at opening. Busy throughout the day for good reason. The food is amazing!
M. “. D.
best pastries in the area!
though I have the say the coffees are below average :(
waiting in the long queue (not as long as it looks) is definitely worth it just for the snails/carrot cake/tarts etc, they are all gooood!
C. C.
It was the end of the day and two days before Christmas so the staff were understandably a little flustered. But the quality of the bakes and coffee we're high and they're in a nice spot just off to the side of the main street so there's less traffic if you're doing your alfresco thang
J. L.
The sausage rolls are amazing at this place! The tarts are also delicious! Very limited seating though, so get there very early, or be prepared to do take away!
J. L.
Coffee is a 5 star, ham cheese croissant 5 star, friendly staff 5 star. Seating 2 stars as it is more of a on the go kinda shop. Location 3 stars. Should get better after the light rail comes in
R.
The best pastries you will find. No question. Pear Danish is a must try
A.
Exceptional bread and pastries! The sun is streaming down on the bakery in the morning, and there is plenty of seating outside. A fantastic neighbourhood bakery, with solid coffee up the street at Artificer.

Cute little bakery in the corner with lovely outdoor seating.
Got a wagyu corned beef sandwich ($9) that was deliicccious! It totally hit the spot as brunch for the day. Also got a mocha and a white chocolate passionfruit tart.
The only lame thing about it was the pigeons. They are fearless and will fly onto your table/seat to get at the bread crumbs so keep watch of your food!
T. G.
Great bakery in Surry Hills. They make really good sourdough bread which we enjoyed for breakfast while on vacation in Sydney. Try the sourdough bread with seeds.

After reading about this place in practically every Sydney guide for best cafes and grand declarations by friends who have been here, I decided to finally make my way upto this revered cafe. Tucked away on the corner of Bourke Street, where it derives its name from from, it looks like a little corner of Paris right in Sydney. Do not be dettered by the long line outside, their service is pretty efficent. The breads smelled and looked seriously good but I didnt get myself any. Instead, since we were there a little after lunch we decided to indulge in a little coffee and cake therapy. Okay, so we bought ourselves a whole tiny cake, chocolate and gooey in the center without being cloyingly sweet.. Hey it was Sunday, the sun was shining bright, I just had italian for lunch, I am allowed half a cake after that!! Okay no judging the sugar crazy lady! Anywhoo the coffee was really good too and I know I gotta be back here to try the pies and the famed pork and fennel sausage roll.
m. p.
they have my most favourite tart - ginger creme brulee tart but I only rates 3 star as it is too pricy! The lemon tart is also worth to try besides the non flour chocolate cake. By the way some of the staff are not very friendly sometimes, which the manager have to look at it ti improve the overall service to customers
F. H.
Always be my first choice for breakfast whenever I am around there.
There is plenty options, beef pie is a must.
They variety of croissants is worth to try as well.
N. M.
There's a queue basically every open hour of every day, but it moves quickly and the wait is never too long once you've ordered. The coffee is spot on and the ham and cheese croissant goes down well every time.
L. T.
Absolutely delicious! the service is straight to the point whilst friendly. The Ginger Brulee Tart, Lemon Curd Tart and Pork & Fennel Sausage Roll are a must!
M. G.
One of my favourite bakeries in Sydney especially the walnut & prune bread. A must have coffee & mixed berry muffin etc place sitting outdoors if you are in Surrey Hills.
H. W.
Tasty bread and sunny outdoor seats.
A. W.
Regular Sunday afternoon refueling spot...
Recommend ...
Lovely ginger brulee tarts
Pork and fennel sausage rolls
Lamb and harrissa sausage rolls
Flourless chocolate cake
And a good place to catch up with friends& people watching.
Service can be patchy ..understandable as I'd get a bit short working in a confined area with a never ending line of customers.
s. i.
Very savory. The coffees are fresh roasted, the baristas always make a high quality drink. Good reasonable drinks, and chill vibe.
R. P.
Love their pastries muffins and meat pies. Outstanding.
L. C.
The weekend queue is definitely worth it for the yummy tarts and pastries. Try the ginger tart, the lemon tart and passion-fruit meringue. The very tangy lemon drink is delicious as well.
J. T.
Sausage roll + chicken pie + ginger cream brûlée + almond croissant.
Love the 1st and the last one, the rest are also nice but not my favorite :)
A very local store which is very worthy to go!
C. B.
Picking up a Wholemeal sourdough loaf each week and have never been let down. There might be a queue out front but wait anyways as it is worth it.
M. N.
Lots of yummy things to try and always a queue out the door. If you can't snag a seat head over to the park across the road. I love the sausage rolls, yum.
K. H.
It's perhaps a foodie thing - If there's a queue, and it's not because it's a new hippy joint, then it must good! The original Bourke Street bakery have withstand the test of times (competition and its own expansion)
Quality of the "goods" is still top shelf but it's very much like the 'soup nazi' in Jerry Seinfeld ; you better know what you want by the time you get through the tiny door and front of the counter. Service can be cold but the quality of food ( and their devine iced chocolate milk) makes it up. Still a legend IMO
T. G.
Delicious pork belly burger on the first bagel I've ever had! Friendly staff and really nice iced coffee! Will be going back for lunch in the near future!😋
A. L.
Pastries are not amazing (am French so a bit of a tough crowd) and coffee is better across the road. I go there several times a week for bread though, which is fantastic!
M. C.
Bourke Street Bakery is the real thing.
You can't fake the smell of real butter wafting out of an oven.
Favourites for me are the beef brisket red wine pie, pork and fennel sausage roll, the ginger creme brulee tart and the CHocolate tart.
I also really like the lemondade which comes in an easy takeaway bottle or the bottled iced coffee.
The queue can look a little crazy on the weekend but it moves quickly so don't let that deter you. t's well worth the wait!
While Bourke Street bakery has set up a few other cafes in and around Sydney, i find the quality here still the best.
E. Z.
Peefect place to get your breakfast coffee and delicious pastry. Service was nice and a place very crowded. You can really tell that this is very popular among locals. Highly recommend!
J. G.
Delicious coffee and awesome food. Nice vibe and lovely staff.
Thanks Bourke street Bakery- it’s always a treat to visit.
C. L.
Love the flourless chocolate cake and potato sourdough! Worth the line up every time.
V. F.
Really nice bakery with outside seats sheltered by the shadows of the nearby trees, a great place to enjoy a coffee and one of there nice pastries. I tried the carrot cake and the ginger/crème brûlée/pistachio pie and loved both.
A. F.
The bread is great and like the ginger creme brulee. In general maybe a bit overrated but worth a visit. Very busy on weekends and in the mornings when everyone is getting their coffee and breakfast.
i. s.
Excellent vegan options. Even better everything else. This place is an institution and one I'd happily be committed to.
H. T.
The tarts are to die for. The problem is choosing which ones to eat because all of them sound equally amazing. Lemon curd is a tricky thing to do right just because everyone has varying standards on how sweet they like their lemon tarts to be. Bourke Street Bakery's version was reminiscent of the lemon tarts I had in Paris. The curd provided enough zing and the best part is probably eating it with my fingers. The ginger creme brulee tart was also another favourite - what a great idea to put creme brulee in a tart! Topped off with pistachios, this is one tart that gets me salivating just thinking about it. I wish I could have brought a dozen of each home with me.
A.
The best all rounder and the original.
Great coffee, great service, great sweets, great savouries.
Atmosphere is relaxed and chilled.
Great for a breaky or brunch meet up.
A. M. S.
Sydney is lucky to have Bourke St Bakery. Whenever i can i swing by, grab a coffee and enjoy the best Pain au chocolat in Sydney. The lunch stuff is also great; pies, sausage rolls etc. I hope it never changes!
B. U.
Ginger creme brulee tart and coffee are nice!
J. M.
I was cycling next to the bakery everyday. Never expected such a great piccolo coffee to be served there. Mind blowing. Rabarbar muffin was fantastic too :)
R. M.
Nothing better.. even the NYC location doesn't come close. The Must-see bakery in Sydney.. and buy several ginger brulee tarts. :)
a. t.
fresh bread, sourdough baguettes are delicious and their chocolate croissants got an A plus from the kids!
E. P.
Why going to Bourke Street Bakery:
* Great quality
* Excellent food
* Fresh
* Lovely coffee
* Good service
I use to go there every Saturday morning for a Street - put on a few pounds but it was so worth it! Missing it a lot since I left Surry Hills.
V. H.
Great little bakery at the corner with a fine selection of cakes, pastries, pies and sandwiches. Loved their toasted beef brisket sandwich with a hint of horseradish and beetroot.
J. M.
Really good coffee and in-house made sausage rolls, there can be a bit of a line up at times
P.
Plenty of tasty morsels available, very busy place being on a corner.
Weren't impressed when I asked for a mug, I dislike tiny wide rimed cups. Opted for takeaway cup.
A. S.
Very good bread and food. Nice coffee., friendly staff. Only problem is that it is tiny and often lines go out onto the street, they move quickly though so dont stress
M. B.
Cute bakery with the option to sit outside as well! Quick and friendly staff even though it was New Years Day! Totally recommend this place.
M. B.
Best bakery around. The ham and cheese croissant is awesome. The quiches are great. The coffee is outstanding. And the staff are extremely friendly.
C. X.
I don't think I've ever eaten so many pastries in one sitting before! It started off with just two tartlets for breakfast... Then a gorgeous cherry chocolate cookie... then another tartlet... then lunch time rolled by, and it was a Pork and Fennel roll. Just... Nom.
M. W.
I stumbled upon the Bourke Street Bakery and its windows full of pastries during my first visit to Sydney a couple of years ago. There was a line out the door and suddenly I felt the urge to get in said line. Well, several years later the same urge overcame me and I have croissants stashed in my hotel room for a late night treat or tomorrow's breakfast.
K. L.
The queues that snake round the block led me to deduce that the food here was rather good or they give money away with your sausage rolls. The food here, especially the aforementioned sausage rolls, is very good
M. M.
I'm not local but this place was sooo good. I legit wanted to buy everything these guys were selling. There was a bit of hustle because it gets quite busy but I hope you guys one day open up shop in Brisbane, we need you.
P. M.
Great coffee and pastries, meat pies area also amazing
A. S.
The ginger tart is to die for.
Other great stuff - the muffins, sausage rolls and almond croissant. Definitely going back.
J. R.
The sausage roll was delicious, huge, and only $5.50. I was impressed with the service, the quality of the food, and the value.
B. B.
The sourdough is ok, and they only have white ones. The staff is not very friendly when I visited. Don’t really worth the hype.
K. H.
The food from here is DELICIOUS! You can’t go wrong with any of the choices, the pies, the lemon tart, absolutely everything taste like heaven! Simply wow!
P. Y.
Extremely hospitable place,I spoke to the manager Hannah and she was able to take care of me and my girlfriend Amy today. I wish the very best for the staff and this bakery and highly recommend coming in for a visit!
v. m.
Lazy mornings at its best - once you make it through the huge line..... They have all your baked goods ready to serve :)
Must eat - Pork and Fennel Sausage roll and lots and lots of it...and Tarts don't forget the tarts.
I.
Their quiches are amazing. I also tried their pear danish which is also excellent-- not overly sweet, they let the fruit do the work.
J. C.
Superb coffee and great pastries! Small place but nice outdoor seating. Don't mind the line. It moves fast.
D. B.
One of the best bakeries in Sydney and beyond. Satisfaction guaranteed.
N. C.
Lovely baked goods. Particularly impressed by raspberry and dark chocolate muffins. It's a good thing that this place is 350km from home :-)
T. C.
Love the Ginger Brulee tarts here!
The crunchy caramalised sugar on top and the gingery/spiced brulee in the middle.
Would always pop by to grab one when in the area.
Lines are long but it moves fast
A. M.
Great pies, sausage rolls and cake. Much later this evening we'll make a start on the breads!
A very welcoming and knowledgable staff. Murray and Alba
C. C.
Always fresh bread. And great muffins, the real gem of this establishment.
M. E.
Excellent food had to have a choc crossoant instead of my fav almond, my fault to late. Just as yummy choc.🙂
T. O.
Love this place. Best cookies! Perfect with a coffee.
N. J.
Nice place if you appreciate quality baked goods which are always fresh and delicious. I love the bakery - often I stop by and pick up a bread and something sweet for home.
M. L.
It's a pretty small bakery, so don't plan on eating here with a big group. However they have some delicious pastries, and sweets!
C. W.
The line out the door indicates the Bakery's massive popularity - I only wish it was a little bigger so I could do more browsing, but then I'd probably end up buying everything I saw :)
S. G.
THE Sydney Bakery. Anything you buy from hear is absolutely delicious. The rhubarb tart was amazing and the sourdough loaves can't be beaten. Not to be missed.
J. T.
Always busy and you generally have to line up but the croissants are just SO good and the have awesome ginger creme brulees.
J. T.
Best sausage rolls in Sydney. Don't forget to get a ginger tart as well.
A. B.
Good coffee but I wasn't thrilled about the crowds. I haven't queued that long for bread since I was in Yugoslavia in the 90s.
B. M.
Best carrot cake ever! All cakes & pastries made daily on the premises. Great for the locals.
H. H.
Can't go wrong with a classic.
A. T. S.
Best pies in the biz
a. s.
Great food and coffee. Very busy but worth it if you're near by. Prepares to know what you want when ordering as it's otherwise somewhat rushed
K. R.
Wonderful bakery! Croissants there are awesome (as a French person, I know what I'm saying haha). Prices are high but everything there is worth it!
D. J.
Scrumptious desserts. Very helpful placing together a selection for morning coffee despite the fact that they were very busy
A. S.
Amazing bread. Amazing tarts (creme brûlée). And pretty solid coffee. There are queues on weekend mornings but usually move quickly
R. V.
Meat pies and sausage rolls. Coffees and treats. A local favorite
R. G.
A household staple. Great bread, pies and pastries!
M.
Great coffee, didn't get to try the pastry but smelt amazing
T. M.
Nice place, love their outdoor seating. Quick service and good food! It's a 5 mins walk from the main street, but it's worth the walk :)
K. J.
Excellent coffee and sandwiches. Staff is extremely friendly. Great food, drink and service
M. S.
I came here to meet my friend, and got a simple but delicious brunch. Also, the flat white here is phenomenal
#. A. S.
Average bakery, Sonoma bakery lot better quality bread but it is very popular because of no competition around
D. E.
Lamb sausage roll and chicken pie was awesome but a little pricey in my opinion. $5.5 for a pie and $4.5 for a sausage roll.
N. A.
Great coffee, and the ham and cheese croissant excellent
D. _.
Friendly staff, good food and nice weather!
J. M.
Ok
S. B.
Tiny corner shop - purchased beef & mushroom pie - very flavoursome with chunks of beef - excellent pastry. Would buy this again.
P. N.
A Sydney institution. Grab a pork and fennel sausage roll, a delightfully crisp yet flaky croissant, and finish off with an old school lemonade and the ginger creme brulee tart.
C. L.
Always worth the drive just for the ginger brûlée tart. One of my top 3 desserts ever.
J. L.
Love the atmosphere of this place which reminds me of some typical bakeries in France. It's so Sydney... PS: good coffees as well!
D. S.
My go to breakfast joint before work. Absolutely loving their fresh food menu and the service that comes with it.
H. C.
The best bread I’ve ever had - we get a loaf weekly and look forward to each slice!
N. M.
Imagining when the light rail construction outside is over this will be an even better spot. Very cool. Cosy and most importantly good coffee!
J.
Amazing place for a quick tasty lunch, very reasonably priced, very friendly service, and great collection
MAKE SURE you try their carrot cake, it is to die for :)
V. N.
Love the sausage rolls here! The seating is very poor so don't expect to be seated when it's busy on the weekend.
J. H.
Really enjoyed the ginger tart - which I was surprised at as I’m not a fan of ginger!
S. R.
Good selection of savoury and sweet baked goods, the creme brulee tart is a must try
N. M.
Generally a queue but it moves quickly and work the short wait. I go for their sausage rolls but also love the sourdough
H. Z.
Had the bread and cakes. And they all tasted amazingly good! But you have to wait a long time before you can buy them
S. L.
Loved this cafe. Almost everything there tastes so delicious. Their sourdoughs and pastries are almost flawless.
M. L.
It was late afternoon by the time we reached and parking was hard to find. The atmosphere and outdoor seating was perfect for the weather! Perfect place to chill on a lazy afternoon.
P. W.
Awesome sausage rolls, pies and pastries, plus good coffee. Can't go wrong here.
T. I.
Nice place to get European style bread. Not as good as real European bread and too expensive for a simple loaf! Nice pies and sweets
C. W.
The coffee and pastries didn't disappoint - it's probably a good thing I don't live nearby or I might end up spherical!
J. s.
Great local. addy makes the best coffee. I live dangerously close. Pork sausage role is fantastic.
L. C.

Yum as always. Fave sausage roll

Food really tasty, service not that friendly. Too bad that I had to pay 10% of "service" charges!!!
A. M.
Just a fantastic place. Great pastries and coffee. My go to when working in the area. Never disappointed.
m. x.
Foods are freshly bake and tasty. Good coffee. Friendly staffs.
m. l.
Good coffee. Great food. Can be queues on weekends. Choc au pain is my down fall
J. B.
A little overhyped and overpriced for what you get. The coffee is good and the reuben was nice but I've only been back once since they took that off the menu.
A. J.
Stunning sausage roll, good meat pie and other pastries. Very popular place.
A. S.
