Comments of Matcha-Ya
N. H.
Side note: Went to Matcha-Ya for desert and as usual the store is quite busy so it can be hard to find a table (especially on the weekend).
Review: I ordered the matcha waffle, it came with red bean, matcha icecream and mochi, the waffle was great, it wasn't overly sweet and it had a good crunch to it.
Personally I like the bitter matcha taste but the ice cream wasn't too bitter, so for those who enjoy more subtle flavours this would be great for you :)

Located in Darling Square, Matcha-Ya is a great place for matcha lovers 🍵💚. You can enjoy deliciously yet balanced flavours of matcha, hojicha, and black sesame options in drinks and desserts. Some popular options are matcha soft serves, black sesame latte, matcha shiratana parfait, and cakes. Savoury picks include matcha rice, udon, lotus chips, matcha-ya edamame, to name a few.
The pricing is reasonable for the area, though a bit higher than other Japanese matcha places in the CBD. Love the “mari-kondo” interior.
A. M.
A hip place to get some Japanese inspired ice cream and interesting dessert combinations.
The soft serve ice cream is decent with the matcha and houji-cha flavours and there's combinations to spruce up the ice cream into a full dessert bowl or tall glass.
The dessert combinations are good, keeping with the Japanese theme and generally not being too sweet, though the mochi balls could be better (they're not quite as smooth with the chewy texture that you get with really good mochi).
M. P.
A great matcha dessert place for matcha lovers with a good selection of dessert range. Sadly we went at a wrong time where alot of stuff on the menu is not available. The matcha waffles was ok but the ice cream dessert was lovely

I love love LOVE this place. I visit as often as I can when I’m in Sydney. The employees are super nice, the place is ALWAYS super clean and has a nice atmosphere which is always great.
The matcha ice cream is AMAZING, everything matcha there is very good honestly. Should try if your ever in Chinatown

Everything was beautiful. Matcha latte was excellent and the cake too. Busy spot but excellent service. Loved the cups and the matcha scroll.
A. K.
Great Japanese dessert place in darling square.
I love their Hojicha and Black sesame latte:)
Not too sweet and good potion for one person ,
Highly recommended this cute place. 🥰
Y.
Tried soft serve and cake roll. Very authentic flavour, not too sweet and not too bitter. Not as busy as before so very happy with the atmosphere
R. L.
Had the houji-cha and fruits garden sundae. Both tasted absolutely delicious and a must try! very fresh tasting, well presented and very cheap! Customer service was also very friendly and hospitable. Definitely will be back!
M. C.
Nice place to have deserts after lunch or dinner. Very close to japanese local flavour but blended with European flavours and taste.
T. L.
Matcha soft serve is highly recommend here. Not too icy and melts in the mouth straight away. Creamy milky and a hint of matcha bitterness. Not too sweet which I really enjoyed for such a hot day today ☀️
Edit: came back the 2nd time for their matcha tiramisu. The matcha mousse was soft and full of matcha flavour while the lady fingers layer act as a sponge to soak up all the goodness of wine, matcha and creamy mascarpone.
W. A.
Visited Matcha-Ya before lockdown and loved their Matcha and Houjicha Soft Serve. It wasn't too sweet and both had a strong tea taste which reminds me of the matcha and Houjicha ice cream I had in Japan. Being a Houjicha lover, I would recommend Houjicha soft serve.
J. X.
Really lovely matcha-centric cafe / bar with a surprisingly large menu of sweet & savoury.
Perfect dessert spot located in the new Darling Square retail precinct. Great after-dinner option. Cosy modern interior with decent amount of seating. Usually playing Jazz so quite a relaxing atmosphere.
I ordered the Matcha Soft Kakigori (Japanese shaved ice) pictured. Wonderful flavour. Perfect balance of bitterness and sweet. The only thing I will mention is that the ice is not shaved into fluffy sheets like its done in Japan. Its more like coarse ground ice like what you’d find in a Korean bingsu. Different mouth feel.
Overall really enjoyed & will return for sure!
K. O.
Cute little Japanese Dessert place in the small street of Steam Mills Lane in Darling Square. Use to come here for their matcha & Hojicha latte and matcha noodles the food here was simple by tasaty. Stopped by here when I crave for their matcha soft serve. Not overly sweet, & good size! They uses matcha & Hojicha from Matcha Matcha Cafe I love their tea products.
J. H.
Shared a soft serve and a Swiss roll with a friend after dinner. All the dessert on the menu looked tempting.
R. S.
Everything is lovely, place is cozy and I miss their matcha ramen which is not available on the menu anymore.
M. A.
Delicious matcha and hojicha drink and dessert variations
R. F.
For any Japanese dessert or matcha fetishists..this place is for you. Equipped with a wide range of Japanese dessert alcohols, delicious desserts and drinks as well as the ubiquitous soft serve matcha ice-cream, this place is a hidden gem. GO THERE
K. C. D. (.
Great dessert place. They have very authentic Japanese matcha and hojicha desserts. Cozy place.
Limited seats inside and outside. A bit crowded inside. If you wait a bit you might be able to find seats. Easier for groups of 4 or less people.
A wide variety of desserts and savoury dishes. You can adjust the sugar for drinks.
They do put a lot of ice in their iced drinks, but still flavourful not too watery.
Customer service could improve. You order and pay at the counter. The buzzer rings and you pick up your order from the side.
S. Z.
Quite crowded for a Thursday night when we came after dinner. We ordered the matcha zenzai Mochi and a hot houji cha. The Mochi was very average; the matcha soup wasn’t flavorful or intense enough for our liking. It tasted quite watered down. The houjicha (roasted green tea) latte was really good though so definitely recommend trying that.
The parfaits looked good and will be back to try that as well.
Overall a great place for some dessert or a hot drink on a cold night, perfect to end date night.
P.
Such a cute matcha place in the darling quarter. I've been there once with friends and we ordered their matcha ice cream. It was so good. Quite pricey as the area is also quite upscale.
K. V. G.
Loved the vibe of this cute Japanese Dessert and bar, stopped by for the soft serve. Not too sweet, & perfect size! Will be back to try some of the drinks and other desserts.
Loved the deco!
R. S.
Earthy, sweet Matcha Green Tea Soft Serve is highly recommended. Taste is perfect not too icy. It's the perfect treat on a hot day.
S. T.
Super yummy! Definitely coming back to try the rest of the menu.
Their desserts are not too sweet and has a nice matcha flavor profile. The desserts aren't the only thing that's yum, their hot food is also quite delicious.
Friendly staff and good service too! Nice ambience and music.
E. A.
Super cute matcha/hojicha themed cafe in Darling Quarter. Prices may seem a bit high but you get what you pay for in terms of quality and serving size. Staff are really polite too.
A. C.
Smooth taste and is not bitter at all.
Vibrant green colour 💚
Can be very busy during winter nights.
d. c.
A must try location for all the matcha fans out there. Matcha-ya offers a huge selection of matcha Incorporated dishes and in particular, desserts. The piping hot teas and lattes are full of flavor and sweetness whilst the parfaits and ice creams are an excellent finish after dinner. Will definitely be coming by here again to try the rest of the menu.
J.
One word - LOVE! If you love or crave for anything Matcha, or if you are looking for the next destination after a good dinner feed in the city... this place is your haven! A range of desserts, soft serves and hot/cold drinks, it's a must try! Definite 5 stars!
G. M.
A new green tea dessert bar offering a variety of matcha based drinks and dessert options! Prices are very reasonable. The space is sleek and clean but hard to find tables during the weekend. Customer can linger and stay as long as they want.
A. H.
Great place to have some dessert or if you're after that matcha fix. Really comfortable and nice looking cafe in darling square. I recommend trying out their matcha ice cream. It's more of the heavier side of matcha yet offers a nice balance in taste and richness. I don't suggest getting their strange lunch menu. I've tried their curry and it's exactly what you imagine it to be so yeah try to avoid it unless you're into that sort of thing. Will be back to try their cakes. Really good sponge rolls that's less on the sweet side for the rolls but easily made up with their cream filling.
S. -.
Japanese staffed Matcha themed cafe. Very well designed and with some hits and misses. I recommend staying within familiar territory here. Grab a nice cake, ice cream and some sweets. Stay away from the lemonade and curries which are green tea infused. Just because you can, doesn't always mean you should!! Very polite staff and great design. Sit inside, or outside. great spot to have a chat with friends or enjoy company.
T. D.
By far the best matcha place in Sydney, had it every weekend for a month straight. The soft serve, tea, and soup were all very nice and had real, authentic matcha to it. The vibe was quite nice with the shop nicely decorated. Music was relaxing and not too loud like most other places
W. Y.
One of the best Japanese restaurant in Sydney! Have been there for many times. They have Matcha, Hojicha (the decaf Matcha tea), and various creative drinks with Matcha flavour (like lemonade, watermelon juice, etc). Their main dishes (Ramen or rice, with pork/beef and a hint of Matcha) are also great. Also, the desserts are definitely must-try! They have original, strawberries, Matcha, and yuzu flavour cakes and I think the Matcha one is the most delicious.
E. N.
Great variety of matcha related food. Everything here is tasty especially the ice cream. Atmosphere and the ambience is wonderful with wooden, simplistic interior design.
B. L.
Matcha-Ya is a great place to enjoy a cup of Japanese tea, either hot or cold, to go along with a variety of matcha-themed dessert. Recently, they have ventured into hot food with matcha-infused curry sauces and noodles. While the infusion was mild in my opinion, that is, I could not really taste too much difference, I admire the owner's sense of innovation and maybe one day they will stumble onto something really good.
Z. S.
I had the Fruits Sundai... Yes... 100% perfect ...☺👌🍨 #spoils #yum
J. C.
Excellent authentic green tea ice cream to go. Japanese ladies staff were smiling & prompt to serve us. I lived 12 years in Japan, and this cute little shop immediately reminded me of there and Tsujiri. Will go back to have matcha cakes, to stay this time :)
A.
Australia has one of the best matcha loving cultures, and Matcha Ya has definitely captured its essence. My personal opinion of Matcha Ya is to order their desserts only. It's delicious, and amazing especially their lattes.
Their rice/noodles though appeared fun and interesting with it being green was actually very disappointing. It was equivalent to a cheap $8 student meal and had no matcha taste to either their matcha noodles and/or their tempura rice bowl we ordered.
V. N.
Love the decor and vibe at this cute Matcha shop. The Matcha desserts here are so good and highly recommended for any Matcha lovers.Great place to catch up with friends or have really yummy desserts.

Love the space at Matcha Ya! It's really fresh, bright and yet super cosy. We tried the amazing matcha latte and the parfait. The real matcha flavours are there and there's a perfect balance of sweetness. Hugely recommend trying it out if you are a matcha lover like we are!
A.
Matcha heaven!
This Cafe serves up everything matcha, also most desserts but they recently just launch some matcha Udon and noodles.
Located inside Steam Mill Lane you can sit inside or outside. The food is pretty good but that's because I love matcha.
Make sure you get some drinks and desserts afterwards.

Lovely cafe in the new(ish) Steam Mill Lane. It has all things matcha (& more). The staff are friendly & helpful and the cafe is spacious. There is a lot of dessert options as well as soba noodles which is disappointing. I have tried the matcha swiss roll which is nice, the matcha cheesecake which I found to have an unusual/strange flavour and didnt enjoy. The tiramisu had way too much cream to matcha/sponge ratio for my liking. The matcha and hojicha soft serves are both enjoyable. Quite light and not overly sweet which I enjoyed.
T. J.
Drinks and desserts are great, personally I would recommend houji over matcha. Friendly staff and nice vibe inside restaurant.

Having been to Japan and eating in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka my expectations for this place were not as high as those eateries which excelled in every small detail. Rightly so, Matcha-Ya does deliver what is advertised on the menu, however the flavors are not as refined. Had the pork ramen with matcha noodles, and beef with onsen egg. For their price, it's okay.
Focusing more on the dessert which most people come here for, the parfaits were nice on the top but as you go down the flavors become more bland, i.e the jelly and shiratama. The taiyaki was also a bit on the dry side. Honeycomb was nice and well made.
One thing I did notice is that the service can really be improved on, and I do hope the owner takes the feedback of the customers pro-actively to polish up the establishment so it achieves the 5 stars it strives for.
C. H.
Nice & descent Japanese dessert house. Provides all kinds of classic matcha & hojicha drinks and cakes. I have been there twice for chilling with friends, never disappoint me once. The reason I want to give it 5 stars is because their dedication in making the drinks. It is one of the few Japanese cafe that add no sugar in the matcha but can still makes it delicious. Amazing. (They put syrup in a bottle on the bench for client, which is good. But mixed with the hand santiser next to it cause they are in similar bottle...)
A. D.
Had a single origin matcha and a soft serve. Great interior design for a nice get together and meet ups.
C.
One of the most unique places I've experienced ! Loved the idea of combining matcha into savoury dishes, since I'm so use to consuming matcha as a dessert and drink, but never as noodles ! The chicken in the katsu curry was crispy, and paired well with a sweet matcha latte float. The place itself is very polished and inviting (also comes with a very clean bathroom). Definitely coming back ! :)
S. W.
Nice place for spending time with your besties here.
Compare with other matcha store , the price is a little expensive. However the taste of the beverage is really good. Worth to try.
Just tried the matcha mousse when I get back home . Not worth the price. Simple sponge cake with some matcha cream.
By the way, service is good as well.
C. K.
A bit pricy but i love the matcha soft serve :3
Also it took 20mins to get the food...
M. O.
Great place to get infused by matcha. The food and drinks are pieces of art. Brings every visit a unique experience.
However, the cafe gets really busy. From an interior designer's point of view, they should move the chairs away from the register where customers are ordering.
Also the floors when wet is very slippery.
b. b.
It's hard to find little genuine Japanese cafes in Sydney but this place really hits that Japan cafe culture craving I always have. It's lowkey, and the ambience is something else: busy but relaxed. The area might be a bit cramped when it's full but if you're a matcha enthusiast I definitely recommend this place. It's that raw, real bitter matcha and not that really sweetened stuff at other places that they serve here. The desserts are also really good! This area reminds me of the show Kantaro the sweet tooth salaryman, this place seems like the kind of dessert place he would like and review!
J. H.
A friend recommended me to come here but I didn’t expect that much, thinking it would just be similar to other matcha places.
I was wrong, their matcha drink defs blew my mind. It was so authentic with a strong tea flavour and a bit milky, just to my liking.
Not to mention, service was great and efficient. The place was petite and cute, ideal for a catch up with friends or just to study/ read books.
c. m. w.
Not a fan of matcha but this cafe changed my mind. Came here for more than 3 times to try other desserts and everything was so good, not too sweet. Staff are friendly too!
O. R.
Mainly a dessert place but also serves udon noodles. Matcha is the star here and you can have it as a drink (hot, iced or a smoothie), as soft-serve ice cream, a sundae, parfait, cheesecake or most any combination. Quick friendly counter service at moderate prices.
J. L.
They offer some really unusual Matcha flavoured items. For one, I have never had Matcha in lemonade before. The drink also comes with salted Sakura flowers inside, tastes pretty nice too. Would love to try their cakes next time.
A. B.
If you like matcha tea and desserts, this is a great place to visit. Love the flavours, the matcha latte combined with the soft sweetness of the strawberry cream matcha roll is the perfect combo.
L. F. A.
Average place at best, but worth a visit if you enjoy matcha or hojicha.
Nothing special unfortunately as you can tell from their menu. It's okay for a place to hang out for dessert but that's about it.
C.
This dessert place is very delicious and I definitely recommend it to matcha and green tea lovers. The desserts are very flavourful and isn't too sweet at the same time. Been here multiple times and the workers there are delightful!
D. C.
Nice place for a dine in dessert if you are nearby, easily accompanies a meal in immediate area of Darling Quarter. The matcha here is definitely good quality. I would personally recommend any of the hot latte variety with the honeycomb :D, the perfect treat during on a cold evening, otherwise either the matcha or houjicha ice-cream are solid options all year round. I can't say all the dessert options are that amazing and obviously subjective, good place place nonetheless.
M.
The Soy milk honeycomb matcha latte was delicious!!! Perfect for a late night dessert! Awesome customer service! Just perfecto!
Y. S.
Very good matcha flavoured desserts and also a wide variety of desserts & food.
I recommend the honeycomb matcha latte. The matcha cheesecake is also very good.
J. R.
Had the Fruit Shiratama Anmitsu and a Chocolate Hojicha latte. Loved the Anmitsu, the red bean paste was great - had plenty of the actual bean and wasn't syrupy sweet. The taste of everything was lovely and as someone who doesn't like drinking coffee the sweet latte was enjoyed - it was also a generous size. My only issues would be that the ice cream seemed to melt very fast in the bowl and that the line for ordering can get very long.
M. M.
Been there twice, delicious, clever dishes. Tasty brewing tea selection. I’ll come back🥰😻
J. T.
Came when it just opened. Had the Strong Matcha Latte with the mixed Matcha-Hojicha Soft Serve. The Strong Matcha Latte was pretty intense. Probably the strongest of what I've had in Sydney. The soft serve was reasonably size and quite nice also. Flavours not as intense but still there.
A. C.
Nice green tea ice cream. They have a large range of other desserts and drinks too. The venue itself is quite pleasant, clean and airy. Free water with lemon in it is a nice touch. There is an outdoor seating which is also quite pleasant
C.
Matcha-Ya is in a vibrant location located amongst other small and unique asian food stores. The matcha latte is very “matcha-y” and is not too sweet. It’s not the cheapest but it makes up for it with its diverse range of matcha and houji-cha food and beverage options.
S.
The matcha soft serve is so good, light and creamy and just the right size, not too large
Z. L.
All dessert decoration are lovely but not too much matcha real flavor, a bit shame.
P. C.
抹茶🍵最高
Many kind of desert with matcha flavor
Soft music with comfortable place
Sunday-Thursday 12:00-22:00
Friday-Saturday 12:00-22:00

All Japanese staff! That’s usually enough reason to recommend this place above so many fake ‘Japanese’ food from Koreans.
Beautiful relaxing jazz Muzak - another pleasure.
Lunch special - Chicken Katsu was perfect - light and fluffy - hippie rice was okay - oh ! the tag/label on top of the food was edible rice paper - a magic touch. The half price deal hot matcha latte was Zen perfection ...
Ah’ll be baaack ... !
M.
Great place for matcha / green tea flavoured drinks and treats. The houji-cha (roasted matcha) ice cream is so tasty! Great to have some variety in Sydney. I knocked a star off because the dine in surcharge per item is scary high.
L. Y.
Had hot matcha plus a hojicha latte. Both were smooth and delicious. Place is clean and modern with a nice casual vibe.
P. I.
Tried the pork ramen with matcha noodles. The pork was super tender, noodles were al dente, the fried mushroom gave it some texture and the pork/mushroomy Tonkotsu broth was light and delicious. I devoured the whole thing. Not enough seating though. I had to hurry and claim a table first and then order and pick up at the counter.
V.
Another great matcha place! Staff were efficient and their menu was true to their flavours.
C. R. C.
Went there on a super busy Sunday.
Staffs are very quick
Love the black sesame latte
Cake roll was okay
Too noisy for my preference but can’t help it
Will come back to try their savoury dishes
W. S.
Place to go for all things matcha. Experts in matcha desserts. Lunch however is a little let down. Beef in the beef rice was a bit dry.
F. N.
Matcha all day, every day! So many things on the menu that you're bound to find something unique that you might like to try.
A. u.
If you like matcha you would love this place!
They don’t really shoo you out, so you can’t really find a seat to dine in most of the time.
Abit pricey for asian desserts though. But still affordable for general public!
S. P.
I love it ! Matcha is Soo good
Mixed soft serve is definitely worth to try
D. H.
A bustling joint for late night dessert or a hot drink. I'm not a huge fan of matcha in sweets so stick to their potted teas and iced coffee. Expect to fight for a table during peak times.
G.
Yummy and reasonably priced! The soft serve cone was a little disappointingly small :( would order double serve if offered. The soft serve is creamy and smooth. The lattes are good on a cold night.
B. L.
Yummy waffles and chips a tad on the exxy side. Not overly strong matcha flavour ):
K. W.
it’s been a few times I came here since they open
it’s a really nice place for some desserts
matcha desserts you would fall in love for sure
P.
Can never say no to matcha dessert. Personally pick is the soft serve with mochi!
M.
Great place for a catch-up with friends or to simply have matcha-themed desserts in a quaint area of Darling Harbour. Staff are extremely friendly and polite, serving desserts and drinks promptly. Would highly recommend their matcha swiss roll.
F. C.
I usually come here for dessert but decided to try their savoury foods. The curry katsu was pretty good. The strong matcha and hojicha are really delicious. It is quite pricey though.
J. C.
Nice staff, and the iced matcha tea ($7) is strong, and packs some serious flavour and punch. You can help yourself to some water infused with lemon - you'll need it. If you're lucky, you might sit near a plug where you can charge your phone. Table service would be nice for what you're paying, rather than using a pager system to collect your food and drinks. Prices could be a tad cheaper too, even though authentic matcha is used.
K. S.
Not a matcha lover but definitely worth a try! Good place to chill with friends
A.
Good service and great dessert. I wish they still sell matcha ramen and the rice menu because I haven't tried it, but they don't sell it anymore. I read reviews from other people before I went there.
M. M.
Delicious desserts I've never seen or tasted before. Clean. Friendly staff. Smooth service. Great ambience.
I. T.
Their desserts are pretty good. The matcha soft serve was pretty weak though.
J. N.
Lunch was a houjicha latte (iced) and matcha katsu curry. The curry does take some getting used to, but was quite happy to finish the whole meal - it was also reasonably priced. The reason why I keep coming back, is for the quality of the drinks. The houjicha and matcha drinks are not sweet (just how I like it), so you can taste the quality.
R. N.
Discovered this a few weeks ago after coming back from our Japan holiday. Was still on holiday mode and this place took me back straight to Tokyo. Lovely selection of everything matcha.
J. Y.
Epic dose of matcha for your day. Authentic matcha taste and the rolls are delicious!! Personal favorite the ice matcha + soft serve
L. W. (.
Matcha soft serve is super good.. I also had Hojicha soft serve.. love them both!
S. P.
Matcha soft serve is my absolute favourite. unbelievable - you can't beat it!
S. Q.
Good place for desert. Pity the portion is small. Spicy (chilli) matcha worth to try in cold winter.
H.
If you love green tea or matcha, this is the place to go. Everything they serve is delicious. You can taste the real matcha in their drinks and desserts.
E. H.
Ordered 2 matcha noodle, both taste ok. Though I was expecting the noodle to taste more "matcha-like", but it just taste like other ordinary regular noodle.
L. L.
It was buy 1 free 1. Pretty good. Got the Hojicha drink too but unfortunately didn't like it :(
Would love to try other items on the menu.
J. J.
love it !good place to have a chat with friends ,love everything with matcha!
Y. Y.
I really enjoyed Houji tea and Anmitsu sweat in the lovely place with well trained friendly staffs.
Must go place in Sydney. I will definitely go back there again
B. C.
Very affordable (especially for central town hall area), very strong matcha flavour. Soft serves are great quality. I think I might be biased because I'm a big matcha fan, my friend got a hojicha iced latte and it was very powdery and a bit too sweet, however considering the price it's still very good. Will definitely be back :)
Y. H.
17/6/2019 they used to have ice cream with dessert , price goes higher , then Quality goes lower . They have heater in the shop , it’s warm : )
J. C.
Decent but slightly too sweet. Good variety of desserts.
d. a.
Matcha-ya serves a good variety of palate cleansers after dinner in the city. The Matcha rolls are soft & fluffy and the Parfait is not too sweet, both delightfully paired with smooth and aromatic hot Sakura Green Tea.
K.
One of the best matcha places in Sydney. Love the matcha drink here.
K. H.
Really loved their $12 Macha tiramisu and other menu but it’s super hard to find seats.
G. L.
Try out the matcha wasabi nori(fries). It’ll definitely satisfy your craving.
K. Y.
Highly recommend the desserts at matcha-ya :) especially their hojicha cheesecake and ice creams! There is usually a line when I go in the evening but the service is fast.
S. R.
If you’re a matcha fan you have to come here. The matcha soft serve is what dreams are made of. Also highly right their matcha cakes 🤤
C. L.
Didn't feel welcome at all upon arrival and service wasn't very friendly nor helpful.
Wanted to try their matcha ramen and tonkotsu soup base but was disappointed that they no longer serve them. It would have been good to know this on their website.
The chicken katsu was crispy but still tender which was nice, the beef was however very chewy. We tried some drinks and the roll cake which were tasty but do feel like the whole experience is overpriced for what they are.
W. T.
Quite decent matcha based desserts but nothing really stood out to me. Just beware that the matcha drink is not sweet
R. L.
Very cute Cafe with good Matcha and hojicha soft serves. Would recommend!
T. C.
High quality Japanese teas and snacks
C. H.
Great selection of matcha & Hojicha
O. J. D.
Great matcha drinks, cakes as well as savoury dishes. All made with Japanese precision & dedication to quality.
S. N. K.
Might come again
Hojicha fronzen is good :)
J. M. Y. L.
Great japanese dessert place that green tea lover must come
C. C.
Good standard of matcha drinks being served at this business. Only downside for me was that waiting for my drink to be made took almost 20 minutes. They definitely need to amp up more staff to serve tables and take orders at the counters.
H. W.
Matcha latte is sublime. Deep green tea flavour unlike other shops.
N. K.
No a fan of matcha but did a 20 min line to try one of their desserts. It was OK. Staff was incredibly friendly even when they were packed!
D. K.
edit: thanks for the reply, and oh! You have a bunch of non-dessert menu as well! My apologies, will try next time I'm there :)
another typical matcha cafe hopping on the hype, but I can say that the quality is definitely better here than many other green-tea themed stores. Price is quite reasonable for what you get; the parfaits are actually quite filling if anything, don't be too greedy and order multiple things, as I have struggled to finish it when I did!
J. L.
Very busy around 9pm but staff were working hard getting orders out. Unfortunately the black sesame Panna cotta and hojicha cheesecake in a jar weren’t amazing in taste but very beautiful desserts. Would recommend ordering matcha desserts instead.
t. m. l.
A new addition to the Darling Square in the new Steam Mill Lane is Matcha-ya. We stopped by for a Friday treat ordering ourselves one of the matcha soft serves and then ordering the matcha and houi-ja swirl soft serve. I loved the selection of dessert options here including matcha tiramisu, a really wonderful range of parfaits and lattes also. Service is quick which is the added bonus :)
I love the simple and wooden decor on the inside, which is both warm and inviting also. The wood offers a nice contrast to the massive concrete jungle that has emerged in the form of darling quarter and darling square. In terms of the soft serves, we loved the matcha ice cream - the slight bitterness and hints of sweet were just perfect. The houi-ja is a lot stronger in flavor and has deeper tones to it, so unless you enjoy a really earthy flavour I would avoid this one. When paired with the matcha, i though it was all really delicious!
C. M.
Must-visit cafe for matcha / houjicha lovers. Nice desserts and lattes in a copy space.
m. b.
I like that it's everything matcha... but...its very mild. Tried the pork Ramen and it was just ok didn't notice any matcha in the noodles. Would like to try the dessert but they had run out on the options I was after (at 7.30, need to be quick). Would come back to try the matcha soft serve and some of the other desserts. Venue could be more efficient with a take away soft serve counter and a eat in counter. As a result everyone has to wait.
I. H.
A must-go in Darling Harbour! We are matcha lovers and been driving long distance to visit them for multiple times. You can park for 15 min free under the bridge to quickly order and pickup, then you’ll have matcha deserts all the way to wherever. Absolutely love this place.
D. T.
Green tea here is not bad but nothing special except location not bad
A. T.
Nice busy place which does its matcha well.
H. M.
Ordered the h&m sundae and the matcha wasabi nori chips. Omg! Heaven! Need to come back and try the other desserts. The lady who took my order was very lovely, keep up the good service!
Slight down side, limited seating.
P.
I love this place! Great matcha lattes and matcha soft serve. The staff is super friendly. :)
K.
The matcha lattes here are great; strong in flavour and not too sweet. The hōjicha lattes, however, are weak in comparison. Still one of the best green tea lattes in Sydney, coming in 2nd to Kentaro in Surry Hills.
The shiratama parfaits, although a bit pricey, are a tasty treat; they feature matcha and hōjicha jelly.
P. K.
This cafe is very nice and cozy, the staffs also very kind, as a matcha shop they have a lot of matcha choice to pick from their menu. So far i like this place
T. L.
This place was busy when we dropped by for dessert. They offer a range for matcha products from cakes to ice cream. Food was good. As it was busy, conversations could be difficult due to noise around. Not very child friendly with their seating arrangement.
T.
If you love matcha or hojicha, you have to try this place.
A. O.
Nice authentic matcha latte and desserts
V. S.
First time visiting matcha-ya! Very impressed!
M. M.
Favourite matcha place in city so far! Their green tea items are not overly sweet like most places and taste authentic which is great ♥ Definitely give it a try.
L. N.
Delicious matcha latte! We were after deserts and lattes, but to our surprise savory dishes were also fantastic. Try matcha tonkotsu noodles, so good!
A. W.
Don't expect to get a sweet matcha syrup like in Starbucks or HK milk tea places. This place sell Japanese matcha flavour which is not as sweet, but they combine it with other sweet ingredients like red beans.
I. L.
Matcha, or green tea based eatery. Green tea is featured in savoury and dessert dishes. Hidden in the alley way but still gained considerable fame based on flavours and very instagrammable photos. Good place to go if you love green tea!
T. O.
Nice and just a little expensive. The icecream (hojicha and matcha) are both great! I would suggest Hojicha since not as many places sell it in Sydney. And don't get the twist with both - Matcha overpowers th Hojicha icecream.
It would be a nice place to take a date :)
J. Y.
Friendly staffs & good price , taste as well
A. T.
Best place to have varieties of matcha options .. delicious, well flavoured and balanced.. good ambiance... also no issue of hygiene...
Drop 1☆ cus the price... slightly abit over price with that portion..
Well if you just visit once or twice a month would be fine with the price.
J. B.
Good place to grab all the matcha related desserts and drinks your heart desires! Expect a wait on Friday and Saturday nights as the place is a quite popular dessert place in Steam Mill Lane.
J. H.
The cafe specialising in green tea has well priced animitsu and sundaes ranging from AUD$7- $14. I reccommend the Hoji-cha animitsu AUD$8 which is roasted tea soft serve, deliciously burnt honey comb, green tea jelly, chia seeds, freeze dry🍊 and of course shiratama. I also drank the yuzu matcha latte- interesting if you like citrus. Overall the ambience, dessert and staff brought me back to Nippon. Take my money! **This is a good spot to breastfeed as well. Relaxing music and welcoming staff.
G. K.
Great matcha and hojicha related Japanese desserts, but it's on the slightly exxy side. I love the anmitsu though! Give this place a go anyhow. Hopefully you'll find seats!
z. y.
great dessert shop, greentea lovers heaven
J. G.
Matcha latte is so good and a really yummy selection of desserts that are not overly sickly sweet but nicely balanced. Nice atmoaphere and great decor. Reccommend a visit!
A. M.
Matcha heaven. Matcha was one of the best in Sydney.
K. C.
Staff was friendly and explained about matcha vevy kindly, matcha latte was excellent.
I saw old trainer was touching food without glove when he make perfait, that was only disapointment about this shop.
T. K.
Authentic Japanese desserts at a reasonable price. The taste is unlike any store I've had in Sydney. Amazing!
D. D.
Great alternative for frozen drinks and soft serve ice cream. The soft serve is only $4 and my 6 year old liked it!
K. Y.
Expensive but amazing!!! If you want real tea icecream this is the place. If you have a super sweet tooth and likes ice cream/desert all sweet and sugar loaded then this is not for you. I could come here everyday.
D. N.
A great range of Japanese style Cafe food
K. L.
Staff are friendly and it’s cosy to seat in.
We had Matcha cake roll and Hojicha cake roll with soft serve they are great too!
M. Z.
Wonderful matcha ice cream!
A. J.
Clean and nice place, delicious food
W. T.
Matcha/hojicha latte is very nice. Strong tea flavour. Cakes are ok, nothing special.
J. L.
Delicious soft serve and matcha latte. However they only offer dairy milk for their latte, I hope they will offer almond milk and soy milk options soon!
J. N.
Need staff to clear tables properly
Owner - the problem is we did ask for the dirty cutlery tobe cleared, but it still was not cleaned properly. This is basics in hygiene to wipe table down, if the woman had done this she would have realised there was still dirty cutlery on table
I. T.
Been here a few times and still my favourite matcha joint in town and not as crowded as Chanoma. The different matcha/hojicha teas are nice.
M.
If you don’t like very sweet green tea, you should pay a visit here. Its green tea taste bitter but the honey comb do neutralise the bitterness of the matcha.
A. A.
Great little cafe. The staff are sweet and the iced matcha was really good!
J. J.
Meal was as good as desserts. Good taste and reasonable price. But sometimes it’s hard to order or ask something even though they are not busy.
V.
Probably the best matcha place in CBD. The matcha is not too sweet or bitter. The hot matcha latte is priceless !!
C. Y.
Great place for matcha and other Japanese inspired food and drinks with your friends after dinner in Haymarket or Central! Great for dates as well.
J. L.
You won’t be disappointed with the authentic and beautifully crafted Japanese desserts!
H. T.
Great desserts, nice nice tea. Very good place indeed.
R. F.
Great macha selection but it's a bit pricey
R. H.
The matcha soft serve here is the bomb!
K. C.
The only Matcha themed restaurant you will need in Sydney. Every other similar typed restaurant doesnt even come close.
R. S.
So nice matcha latte, and matcha ice cream cone. The matcha taste is the best that I ever had. Strongly recommended.
N. C.
Great menu and options of food and drinks specially for matcha lovers. Great service, cozy small restaurant and delicious food!
W. Y. L.
Their matcha cream Swiss roll is the best!!
G. F.
Matcha parfait and soft serves were excellent, two udon dishes predictably average. Clean and comfortable and friendly staff.
Y. L.

Should come here

Matcha fans would love the varieties here
K. Y.

Great place for matcha and other Japanese inspired food and drinks with your friends after dinner in Haymarket or Central! Great for dates as well.

A bit expensive, I was expect that they will use ‘Matcha Bamboo whisk’ to make a tea 🍵 But they use ‘electric whisk’ instead. 😢
M. M.

Delicious matcha
J. L.
Delicious soft serve and matcha latte. However they only offer dairy milk for their latte, I hope they will offer almond milk and soy milk options soon!
M. R.
Very friendly staff and very delicious drinks. I had the iced coffee with match and whipped cream...was awesome!

Recently opened, but the mocha ice cream is watery, not better than the one sold in CBD Japanese groucery. Just so so I think
P. P.
Lovely matcha green tea, not too sweet especially soft serve . But it not too many seat tho.
F. A.
Good food and good customer service. Food was also quite yum.

Nice spot to relax and enjoy a Matcha latte after work.
A. K.
My husband's best kept secret hangout with the best matcha desserts in downtown Sydney
R. H. N.
The desserts were nicely presented and tasted great. Too bad the shop's a tad too narrow and it can get really crowded or noisy.
H. W.
Really yummy green tea dessert.

G. L.
Absolutely love their matcha latte frozen!!! A lot of places use cheap matcha which tastes fishy when served cold but this place knows their matcha. No fishy taste, not too much bitter either. I’d have this every day if I live or work nearby.
And their soft serves are only $4.5 ❤️
Can’t get enough of it!

(Translated) Before heading to Darling Harbour for a romantic evening, come here and let the taste buds enjoy the afternoon tea. The dessert on this point combines fresh fruit strawberries with Japanese white jade, red beans, condensed milk or caramel, so you can choose. Matcha ice cream is like a traditional Japanese dessert without sweetness, so the dessert in the cup is just right.
