Comments of The Alternate Root
J. K.
The location is excellent, with indoor and outdoor seating.
The interior of the cafe looks gorgeous with rainbow stained sunlights.
The store has a very homey and comfortable ambience.
The wait for the food was around 30 minutes, so we only got small and quick items. The food was delicious and fast.
The coffee looked great but was lukewarm when we ordered extra hot.
Overall, very great staff and experience. I would recommend coming here.
A. 1.
Beautiful location and architecture. The furniture was tasteful and the waiter and waitress were very approachable. Would recommend the fresh juices and pancakes! Incredible food <33

Wow, what an unexpected surprise. Food is delicious, great ambience and awesome staff.
You got to try the Apple Crumble...just delicious and super fresh. Coffee was smooth and strong...loved every sip.
G. M.
Great service, beautiful healthy food - so glad that I held out and made it here for lunch!
H. P.
What a gem! We stopped here for lunch and had a great experience. The table was cleaned before we sat down. We enjoyed superb coffee and the meals were delicious. A beautiful building with many original features caps off the visit. We would definitely recommend this place, good staff, good food
I. M.
If these guys are open then stop here and eat. Great coffee and food, you wont be sorry. These guys are the best in New England for breakfast and lunch. We had the shrooms on toast and they were excellent. The only suggestion is to put the toast on the side and ask for butter on the side (just for the toast). The Alternate Root is a road less travelled when it should be a route well worn.
M. S.
Great service. Lovely decor, ambience. Had big breakfast.
Beans too strong for brekkie, greenery awful.
Best assemble own from beautiful bacon, toasted Turkish, eggs and mushrooms.
J. A.
They were really busy and we arrived very near the end of their lunch service but the staff were lovely. They found room for us and didn't hurry us at all. Food and coffee were great. Highly recommend.
S. L.
I've been to this café a few times now, I have found the service and the food consistent. Even though they have a limited menu, the dishes I have had have all been done to a high standard and portion sizes are good value.
The building itself is an old general store, with details such as a beautiful pressed tin ceiling and stain glass windows, it creates a great atmosphere.

Nice friendly staff.
Only dropped in for a mid-morning coffee, which was nice.
Obviously popular, but not too crowded.

Uralla is a quirky little town, equally matched by a quirky and delightful cafe The Alternate Root. We arrived just before closing. Though busy sweeping floors and making the place sparkle they still made us feel welcome. With only sumptuous homemade cakes and coffee still available we could not have been happier. Our cakes were absolutely fresh and delicious. We are so glad we took an alternate route to find this gem.
J. A.

Delicious food & coffee. The coffee cups even have little messages written inside the cup.💜 Great vibe, excellent customer service and located in one of the friendliest little towns Iv ever visited!

Passing through on our way back to Tamworth we stopped in for morning tea. I highly record this cafe. Great food, coffee and service plus gifts. The atmosphere is really inviting with plenty of seating. I can just imagine how it would be in winter with the open fireplace ablaze.
N. W.
Great place. Food and ambiance.
A compulsory stop for me.
j. s.
Very fancy cafe with beautiful renovation, the drinks are reasonable price while the food is expensive. Love the vibe if we have hours to sit with a book.
L. W.

We stopped off here for breakfast on our way to Mudgee from Armidale. The building itself is stunning and the food excellent. I had the ricotta and honey pancakes and they were delish and not sweet.

I recently visited The Alternate Root for the first time this week and I was pleasantly surprised. The building that the cafe occupies is stunning and the space is huge but it feels very cosy and welcoming. The furniture is extremely comfortable and there are shelves throughout the cafe selling boutique goods. When visiting ensure you look up to the roof! A truly beautiful, warm and comfortable space.
The coffee is delicious and the service is great! All of the coffee cups have a quote on the inside which just adds to the charm. Of you're visiting Uralla or just passing through make sure you go out of your way to stop by here for at least a coffee.
S. N.
Great food and excellent service. Massive portions. I had to skip lunch. Will visit again
C. M.
Good coffee, good nice Gluten Free cakes too.
S. H.
Great cafe, comfortable, great coffee and excellent service 😀
T. S.
Great food,
Great service,
The premises is steeped in history.
Has been restored to its former glory.

Sensational staff! Arrived long after the "New England" lunch time BUT not a problem! Fabulous old building avec pressed metal ceilings, grand fireplace ... plenty of GF options too. We'll be back😘
M. R.
If passing through I love stopping here. Always have great food and staff are friendly and attentive.
J. S.
The coffee was great. We only had cakes but all enjoyed our choices.
The staff were super friendly and efficient.
N. W.
Great place. Food and ambiance.
A compulsory stop for me.
S. D.
A favourite place to visit when in Uralla. Chill space to relax and enjoy great food, drinks and service.
L. B.
Lovely place to grab a huge variety of cake/slices🍰🥧🍪 with a delightful hot Cappuccino☕🫖. Plenty of parking & the conversation was friendly explaining so much about their little town. Perfect place to stop in on your way through either to Armidale or heading to Tamworth😊🤗🤩
L. K.
Great staff, very friendly, helpful and understanding. Creamy fettuccine with mushrooms & chicken was delicious, to die for!!! Thank you for being accommodating for removing the bacon for us 😀 highly recommended stop for a dining experience in Uralla
P. M.
Food is absoulety stunning! Staff are amazing, cooks are consistent at pumping out incredible quality food everytime and every visit! A must visit!
Y. H.
First of all, THE COFFEE HERE IS FKN AMAZING. It got to the point where everyone ordered a second and some even a third coffee. Whoever was working as barista on Sunday 9th morning deserves a raise and possible ownership of the business.
Food is good too. Recommendations are: brownies and roast veg salad. They also have a little knick-knack shop. With crystals, soaps (pictured) and jewellery.
P.
Pretty cool interior and amazing BBQ burger I had
S. G.
Beautiful historic building. Coffee ok. Cakes delicious. Presses metal and stained glass ceilings
D. B.
Awesome place. Great fit out that keeps you looking at the venue. But the menu is good too. Lots of small and larger meals... big breakfast..wow. couldn't get through it. Well priced & nice coffee. Tralia is a great town , a must stop place.
S. B.
Great food. Great staff. Great service. Loved the space. Chicken toastie was good.
A. A.
This cafe is excellent and would hold up to comparison with any of the wonderful cafes in Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane. It's housed in a beautiful, original historic building and well worth the stop.
M. M.
Great for breakfast but lunch menu is not that appealing. I have the vegan burger the pattie was a sloppy mess
P.
Absolutely awesome place. Great coffee, nice food and readonable prices. A must visit if stopping in Uralla.
E. H.
A random traveller on the Black Stump Way told us that this place is a MUST!
HE WASN'T WRONG.
From the beautiful ceiling, friendly service and excellent food, we're glad we stopped.
J. D.
Amazing place, great coffee, friendly staff
L. M.
We were travelling through and decided to get some breakfast and a coffee before heading to Sydney.
So pleased that we chose this place such a nice arty quirky interior. My egg and bacon croissant was lovely. Bacon crunchy egg soft cross ain't fresh, buttery and toasted. Coffee great nice strong and flavoursome.
The cafe wasn't full but had a few other customers. The brunette who served us was lovely and informative. She answered my many questions politely and fully.
I don't know about anyone else but I seem to have a run of lousy service and then out of the blue someone does a great job or takes some extra time just makes me feel so much better.
I'd recommend trying it.
T. J.
This place is amazing had the best breakfast ever.
Good coffee much better than any expectation we had.
Friendly staff I hope this place goes really well.
Beautiful building.
M. B.
The eggs Benedict was absolutely divine. We had a lovely time. 5 stars- highly recommended for cosy Sunday brunch.
R. H.
Good place, lovely atmosphere and location. The rustic look is gorgeous, only draw back was the slow service. Took them 20 minutes to get our food to us. (Just two pieces of cake), which was extremely disappointing as they weren’t busy at all. Still- friendly staff, bubbly barista :) and nice food. Once it came to us.
L. M.
The eggs Benedict were actually AMAZING! Best I’ve ever had!
J. P.
What a great find this cafe was on a cold morning road trip. Had some delicious breakfast , coffee in front of a log fire. Amazing restored old building . Have a look at the ceiling as your have a coffee. Going back soon.
W.
I stopped by here recently on a road trip when the weather was freezing cold, it was sleeting, and I was in desperate need of a coffee to go. When I saw the warm flickering flames of the fireplace with a little dog curled up in front, I knew straightaway that this place was going to be friendly and welcoming - and it was! The people were lovely and the coffee was good. I didn't get any food but the fresh batch of spinach pastries looked great.
M. B.
Delightful staff, lovely atmosphere and lots of things to look about at. I appreciated the environmentally conscious wares. The limited menu was the only drawback and I was dubious that the only salad on the menu was $20, but the space was very baby/todler friendly. We ordered 3 toasted sandwich which were quite tasty.
C. B.
Most likely the best cafe you will find in town. Nice coffee and food in a relaxed atmosphere.
I. A.
Moroccan quinoa salad and chai latte, at the voluminous Alternate Root.
B. K.
Absolutely gem place. Amazing coffee and food, lovely staff, beautiful atmosphere and bonsoy available :).
S. R.
We travel to the New England region regularly and always stop The Alternate Root. Fresh interesting food and great coffee... great way to start the day.
P. H.
Nice food, lovely building but waitress kinda spaced out.....
J. R.
Great service
Stopped in Urulla for lunch. Food was excellent both in presentation and quality.
Had the best cheesecake with coffee afterwards, (chocolate and caramel.)
Best desert I had ever tasted.
Highly you recommend you stop there if you are ever in Urulla.
B. &. N. P.
The most amazing flavours, super friendly staff and beautiful atmosphere. This place really ticks all the boxes!!! Do yourself a favour and pull up a chair! It's just a pity I was traveling through.
I. S.
Great coffee, good food, and good service. But really popular can be quite a wait if it's busy. But definitely worth the stop as you pass through Uralla. Heritage building, don't forget to look up when you get inside, pressed metal ceilings and colourful lead light sky lights. Various art, and other wares for sale.
P. J.
What a great cafe this place is. Plenty of room and good food. I had a beef pie that was delicious and the chicken pie was also good. Coffee was excellent and the staff were very friendly.
I'll be back!
B. V.
A good choice of delicious cakes and treats. The breakfast and lunch menus are varied and tasty. Great coffee and nice selection of teas. The staff are friendly and the service is quick. I would definitely recommend a visit.
G. R.
Series & food were great, menu a little light on.
M. B.
Bacon Benedict and Latte were amazing. I had high expectations and they were exceeded! I'll definately be stopping here on future trips. Great place to have a break from driving. Food was amazing, Service exemplary and building immaculately clean and presented!

Trendy Cafe at the Uralla crossroads. Excellent food and coffee, pressed tin ceiling, interesting sofas, roomy ...
V. G.
Good food is worth waiting for... everything was with care and attention to detail. The mushrooms on toast was exceptional as well as the ricotta pancakes! We will be back!
a. r.
Beautiful coffee.... nice chunky beef only $7.50.... I like the octopus salad...big nice place with high ceilings, artistic....but a bit fly around :-(
F.
Beautifully renovated cafe ! Huge indoor dining area with loads of character. Some outdoor dining. Food was very nice and service great. If you are (unbelievably!) not a coffee drinker the tea options are fantastic also.
L. W.
Both my husband and I loved our meals here.Wonderful combination of tastes.
Love the decor and the space. Service was great too.
A. A.
You cannot get better coffee than this! Owner and staff are lovely, meals tasty, healthy with fresh and organic ingredients, a beautiful historic building to enjoy your experience in and some lovely gift merchandise to purchase.
For travellers, a stop well worth your while as Uralla is on the New England Highway, parking is easy to come by and there are some interesting shops etc nearby to investigate.
f.
Very popular eatery. So busy our daughters meal was given away to save them time on a take away order. I only found out after I asked where our childs meal was as we'd been waiting so long. They'd forgotten to replace hers, so they swiftly made another free of charge. Food was enjoyable, wide ramp in entrance for prams & disability. Very large cafe & well priced. Seemed to be enjoyed by all visitors.
P. W.
Vibrant, great place to have a break from driving. Wonderful coffee and food. Recommended. ❤️
S. S.
Excellent coffee and cakes. Bigger city cafes can learn a thing or two from these guys. Keep up the good work.
D. P.
Stopped here multiple times over last couple of years. Always good. Unusual but interesting menu, great coffee and fireplace in winter months. Don't forget to look upwards, otherwise you'll miss the AMAZING ceiling.
l. c.
A beautiful historic building to have coffee at. A lovely surprise in a town of less than 3000 people. Great service with a smile always make me want to go back for more!
M. L.
The Chicken Shawarma Salad was sensational. The flavours were excellent. The staff were very friendy. The Alternate Root is a great find in a small country town.
A. T.
I love this place, the atmosphere is always lovely although the coffee taste isn't super consistent. I really like the food here as well even though it is a little pricey.
P. G.
Im not one for exaggeration, but this cafe is quite possibly a justifiable reason to move to Uralla.
Wholesome, utterly delicious food that tastes the way it is supposed to, great coffee, friendly polite and engaging service, all bundled up in an amazing restored heritage building.
The quirky decor creates a genuine and relaxed atmosphere without the pretentiousness and wankiness of wannabe city establishments.
Some things are just done better in the country. This place is one of them!
M. D. D.
Excellent food and service. Thanks guys.
K. A.
Always great coffee and good food served with a friendly face in the thriving foodie-topia, hand made slice of heaven that is Uralla. Always stop here if it's open.
D. B.
Very large indoor area with some kerbside tables as well.
Prepared food as well as fresh cooked.
Good severy setup with deliveries to tables
L. S.
Beautiful venue, for live music, coffee & snacks, The Ambience of the Beautiful old supermarket building is wonderful to take in, Especially in winter with the fire burning, & the lovely lighting, brickwork & timber beams, as well as the Beautiful pressed Tin Ceilings.❤

J. G.
Looking to stop at your Mom's place on the way through town but she's not living in Uralla? Look no further than the Alternate Root. This wholesome establishment has it all from freshly cooked meals that are as good for your soul as they are for your taste buds to fresh drinks and coffee!
If you're not in too much of a rush, take some time and look up while waiting for your order...that's right, this space has an amazing pressed tin + exposed wood beam ceiling that will take you back to the farm you never grew up on or wished you had.
The owners and workers are great so be 'local' and say g'day, pretend like time doesn't matter.
M. S.
Stopped by for coffee and cake, which was excellent. Look out for the quite ornate original (circa 1920s) pressed tin ceiling
J. F.
Nice coffee, great cake, but service is SLOW. Great if your a grey nomad or have nothing pressing, but 25 minutes for a coffee and a slice of toasted banana bread when your in a rush is infuriating!
S. H.
A real surprise to find a venue like this in a small town. Great coffee and the venue was really well set up.
S. E.
Love the atmosphere, love the food, love the service. Great place to call in.
H. B.
Service a little slow..... limited menu
Given another chance...
Service and menu limitations understandable due to Covid staffing availability..
