I loved my stay here and would highly recommend this hotel. It feels like a welcoming home away from home. My room was clean and cosy with a very comfortable bed. The hotel is in a great spot within walking distance to everything around town. I'll definitely stay here again.

Would fully recommend the Astor Hotel, Tildy and Neil were brilliant hosts to group of 32 of us during a 4 day stay, the hotel exceeded our expectations and the hosts were more than accommodating to our needs of a large group. The hotel has great breakfast and lounge rooms where we all could get together and an easy walking distance to all the attractions Hobart has to offer. Overall great value accommodation and a very friendly place to stay. Will definitely go back there next time we are in Tassie.

Absolutely beautiful, warm and charming. I booked into a room with ensuite for one night and wish I could stay longer! The room has to be the cleanest and most well maintained accommodation I've stayed at. The room was close to the road however was quieter than the more expensive chain hotel I stayed during last visit to Hobart.
Highly recommended The Astor and am already planning my next stay.

If you appreciate old fashioned things and personalised hospitality then this is the hotel for you. Immaculately clean. When we went out, the bed was made and room freshened up and new towels provided. The breakfast room has lots of booths and the bread is thick and fresh (sour dough I think) with a toaster and all the condiments, tea, coffee, juice, fruit and cereals. We were a bit unsure what to expect as we had booked a shared bathroom but again, the bathrooms were immaculately clean and there was no waiting. There are quite a few bathrooms as well. I am sure this must be the cheapest and best kept secret accommodation in Hobart. This is our new go-to accommodation of choice. So quirky and inviting. Great job Tildy and Neil (Managers).

Lovely hotel with a great feel and decor. Tildy the manager was very friendly and gave us lots of tips and help to plan our stay in Hobart. Would greatly recommend to everyone. We used to shared bathroom facilities and it was not problem at all, very Clean and never bumped into someone getting out of the shower! Really great location, very close to mona ferry terminal and Salamanca markets.

Delightful slightly quirky place with fabulous rooms. Rather old fashioned, there is a luggage lift but not a people lift. Comfortable beds. Only 3 rooms with ensuite bathrooms, otherwise shared facilities. A rare find, one of a kind.

It's so difficult to sum up this gem of a hotel. It is old world, built in 1921 and very original in some parts, updated well in others. It is warm and welcoming, with more than a hint of Poirot era in its appointments. We booked out most of it for a friends reunion and it was perfect+++. The lounge room is roomy yet cosy, as is the breakfast room. (And where do you get a generous breakfast thrown in for free in a hotel these days?) Rooms vary from huge with ensuite to modest with basin and shared bathroom facilities. Oh, and I should add that the solid masonry walls between rooms means that there is complete acoustic isolation. Oh, and wi-fi that actually works well everywhere throughout the hotel - and free!
The real gem here though is the owners - Tildy and Neil. They treat you as the dearest of friends from beginning to end. Personable, attentive, wonderful company and very service oriented. We came as strangers and left as friends. Unbeatable!
So, if you choose to stay here, don't expect the usual modern motel facilities and fake smiles. Go for a large slice of old world charm and unmatched hospitality.

My best and most favourite place to stay in Hobart. Depends what you are looking for in a hotel, but this place has charm and genuine hospitality from the owners, and that puts it way ahead in my book.
b.
Fantastic location and at very reasonable rate. While it might seem a little worn around the edges, this regal aged duchess of a hotel has not lost any of its charm over time. The location is sublime for access to all the coolest cafes, bars and bookshops in Hobart as well as being only a short walk to Salamanca where you can catch the ferry to MONA.
The rooms are large with high ceilings and very comfortable beds, it’s clean and the staff are both welcoming and hilarious (we received a ‘check-in’ dance on arrival). If you are prepared to step back to a time when bathrooms were not located in the rooms, you will enjoy the amenities that this delightful hotel has to offer. Considering the location and cost it’s a great option for budget travellers.

WONDERFUL! From the moment we confirmed our booking, Tildy was friendly, accomodating and made us feel extremely welcome. The hotel is exceptionally clean and has great charm and character. Our room was comfortable and cosy and was beautifully decorated; there was also tea/coffee making facilities and a basin which was handy!
A continental breakfast was available with a good selection of provisions.
Location is excellent; just a 5 minute walk to everything central in Hobart.
Would definitely stay at the Astor again! :)

I've stayed here a bunch of times and Tildy never fails to disappoint. Clean comfy rooms in a perfect location. This place has CHARM!
A. H.
Lovely old building with fittings kept to retain art deco feel. The location in central Hobart is very convenient. Tildy was friendly and good-humoured. The only (minor) improvement I could suggest is fresh fruit at the breakfast table, yoghurt, and non-dairy and gluten-free options.
J. L.
Stayed here a few times now. Fantastic hotel, fantastic location. Tildy and Neil are lovely and very accommodating. My go to Hobart accommodation.
V. &. R. S.
Wonderful hospitality! A charming hotel in a fabulous location making it easy to enjoy the treats of Hobart. Very clean facilities. I stayed in a room with a choice of bathrooms down the hall. As clean and comfy as home! Thank you Tildy and staff!
L. L.
Had a great stay at the Astor. Hotel close to piers, museum and art gallery, visitor centre and Elizabeth mall. The place is very clean which is a big tick in my book. There were fresh, beautifully scented flowers and that made it a very homely experience. The breakfast spread very good.

Lots of character during inexpensive stay
S42°53.103' E147°19.627' The Astor is located in Central Hobart and is ideally situated to see Hobart on foot. We only needed the car to visit Mount Wellington. The Astor has limited parking space for 5 cars in the back. Call Tildy, the owner, ahead. This rambling downtown 1920s charmer, according to Lonely Planet’s must visit recommendation, retains much of its character: stained glass windows, old furniture, lofty ceilings and the unstoppable Tildy at the helm. Some TA-reviewers noted to have difficulty controlling and restraining Tildy, but Tildy is charming and always willing to help. Just go with her flow and she makes your stay memorable.
The Astor Private hotel is clearly the opposite of a large business hotel and much closer to a B&B. Our large corner en-suite number 32 on the second floor (3F) in February 2020 was clean and had an excellent double bed, view of Macquire St, television, fridge, heating and fan. Wi-Fi reception was not reliable in our room. In 2017, our room had been renovated with a modern bathroom with heating lights. The room is cleaned daily with fresh towels. Some other rooms are not en-suite with bathrooms in the hallway. Instead of an air-conditioning unit, the room has a fan. We slept with open side window. There is some noise from the traffic on Macquarie St. but it did not bother us.
Each morning a simple breakfast buffet is offered with bread, cereals, jam, orange juice, milk, powder coffee and tea. Nothing cooked. Enough to start the day. To avoid high costs for internet travel agencies, we booked our room directly by e-mail. We paid €149 per night for a double room in February 2020. For accommodations in the centre of Hobart, this is a competitive price.
The Astor Private Hotel offers a good night’s sleep in a charming hotel full of character with a very personal host. Highly recommended.

The Astor Private Hotel is a fantastic stay. Excellent location, beautifully kept room in old style fashion, and good old fashioned customer service. Hostess Tildy is a great laugh, and her love and grasp of Latin is superb.
Y. O.
Amazing place. Perfect location, clean, friendly and full of old world charm. A much more personal experience than the big hotels. Thanks Tildy
J.
Charming heritage-style hotel, well-maintained throughout, with very clean and comfortable rooms and facilities. Bathrooms were impeccably cleaned daily.
Great location in the heart of Hobart. However, full brick construction means the rooms are also very insular and quiet, from both street noise and other rooms.
The hotel's manager, Tildy, is warm and inviting and makes guests feel welcome and comfortable; quite the personality.
Very reasonable rates that represent extremely good value.
12 of us stayed in 5 different rooms over the course of a couple of weeks and not a single person had a complaint in all that time. Would not hesitate to stay here again.

This hundred year old family run hotel is the kind of place I like to stay. Tildy, who runs it, is a charming character. The hotel is dated but sparkling clean. Location is in the heart of Hobart. For me, you can't do better than this.

I loved the experience due to the staff and being able to feel comfy not just wth the room but just the character and atmosphere of the place. A refreshing change from the standard hotel format. It’s an older building which I was a bit concerned about as I like new stuff but overall super value for the $. Thanks for the free breaky too.
D. C.
Wonderful stay! Especially if you're travelling alone, as I was, you can totally relax here and Tildy and Neil are perfect hosts. I had a beautiful room, so clean and such a comfy bed! I think they could charge double and it would still be a bargain! Dianne Chadwick

Tildy (the receptionist) was a lovely lady and made our stay very comfortable! Awesome location in the city! Yummy breakfast!! It’s like a home away from home!!
Do call hotel directly for a better price a room rather than indirect booking websites !!
G. G.
I love this place! Value for money, the place just oozes charm. It’s like stepping back in time. The room was very clean. The facilities were excellent the breakfast just what you need.
I will be going back.

5 Stars is not enough. My 3rd visit and both the Astor and the hotel's management tick all the boxes. Can't wait for the 4th visit. Here's the 6th star *

This hotel have a long history, it is Established in 1922. The manager Tildy is very friendly and nice, giving us a lot of accomadation. We are really satiafied their breakfast. If you arrived Hobart , Astor must is the best choice.

Historical site in the centre of Hobart.
Exellent . I think Environmental scientists, Botanists, Bush walkers and Nature loving people would love this place to stay. It's overly and old fashioned.
T. H.
Great location and service with staff willing to help.
Rooms are a little dated and rather warm in summer, but still good for the price.
Free breakfast was nice too.
Good all round experience.
I would go again.

Unlike the bland experiences most subscribe to in their peregrination through endless indistinguishable hotel chains, voyeuristically "experiencing" the locales they intend to remain materially unattached to; this place has character. A term that gets thrown around a lot on renovation TV in the united kingdom but nevertheless points to the je ne sais quoi of homeliness.
This is my favourite hotel in Australia.
It is well hosted, appointed, priced, and positioned.
G. H.
Inexpensive historic hotel. Budget rooms have basins, showers & bath in corridors. Rooms with en suites available. Great location for Dark MOFO, The Taste festivals, close to waterfront, shops, cafes, historic landmarks, etc.
R. N.
Hotel Astor is a home away from home. The hotel's best asset is Tilde, the long term inn keeper. She is a charming, helpful character! She makes everything work and makes people comfortable instantly!
D. B.
Great friendly and helpful reception personnel and very accommodating to my delayed arrival. Nice and clean, great price, nice breaky included.
