M. B.Very friendly owner and a great vibe at this bunkhouse. Plenty of bathrooms to go around so we never had to wait to use a toilet or shower, infinite hot water with great water pressure, and there's a section of the kitchen with communal food from other travellers who have recently left (which is great for bits and pieces but maybe not a whole meal). Nice view of the mountain if you're lucky enough to get a room on the west side, all in all a good stay.
W.For a hostel, this place is amazing. Best hostel I've stayed at during my trip in Tasmania. Would recommended staying in a 2-4 dorm, 8 was a bit crowded and stuffy on a warm day. Great service. Free parking is a plus! Convenient location. Would definitely stay here again.

Y. O.This hostel had a lovely homely vibe as well as great facilities. It is a large renovated house in a historic part of Hobart. The bunks were designed well and facilities were very handy - great kitchen, ample parking etc. Anthony the owner was friendly and always up for a chat.
B. G.I stayed here for two nights in March 2021 and was very impressed with the whole place. Antony, the owner, was close at hand a lot of the time ensuring that my check-in was quick and easy. I turned up earlier than the 2pm check in time and this was warmly welcomed and showed to a store room off the kitchen where I was able to leave my bags while I went off to explore Hobart until after check in time. He also was very friendly and knowledgeable about things to do around Hobart.
The hostel/bunkhouse is a lovely and well maintained older house in the suburb of Battery Point, a very short walk to Salamanca, the waterfront and the CBD.
The kitchen is massive with plenty of fridge space and ample crockery, pots and pans and all the things you need in a kitchen - there was even a coffee machine and a blender.
I stayed in the 8 bed female dorm and was very impressed with the size of the bunk beds (king singles I think - very roomy) and the room itself. Each bed had a shelf on the wall for you to put your phone, water bottle or book (or all three if you wanted to). There are also power points near each bed so you can charge up your phone and lamps for reading. The bottom bunks had curtains that you could pull across for privacy.
All in all I was so glad that I chose to stay here for my last two nights in Tasmania and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great backpackers with great atmosphere that is close to the city.
A. N.Having stayed at a whole bunch of Hobart hostels over the past 4 years of travelling here I can confidently say Montacute is the best of the bunch! Antony the owner is on hand, knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. The dorm rooms are kept clean and have solid wooden bunks (no groaning creaky metal). The house itself is beautiful and the location can't be beat. Great spot to base yourself and meet new friends for a drink around the corner at Preachers.

E. M.What a great place to stay in Hobart! If you are after budget accommodation, look no further. A town house turned into hostel - only a few rooms and plenty of outdoor space. The bathrooms, bedrooms and kitchen were super clean and the kitchen had all amenities. The rooms have plenty of space and the bunkbeds are big and comfy. The owner and staff are very helpful and friendly. I am not normally into hostels, but I would choose Montacute over any other hotel in Hobart. I look forward to going back.

There is a common room on the first floor which was perfect for dining and getting to know the other backpackers/visitors staying in Montacute. Beds were super comfortable / linens were ace. Facilities and room were well maintained and cleaned. Since it was in the middle of winter when I came, the home was always warm! Located in the historic Battery Point, the hostel has a really welcoming feel to it. The rooms and bathrooms are very clean and so does the common area.
Anthony is really friendly and his two dogs are so cute!

We got a private double in "the pod". The room was airy, fresh and clean. A little heater and extra blanket to keep warm. Hot water bottles also useful.
Kitchen was well kitted out with lots of kit ,good fridge and cooker.
Staff were attentive, informative and enthusiastic. Everything was smooth and I would recommend staying here.

Although we couldn’t stay the night because of a system error that doubled booked our room, the host went out of his way to make sure and even payed for a new room for us down the road at a nice pub. Although there was the error, his manner and the way he handled the situation was excellent. And of course the place is lovely with great amenities.

The beds were comfortable but the room door was loud so you were always woken by people getting up during the night. The kitchen facilities are amazing but the bathrooms were also fairly basic

Loved the trust policy in the kitchen with the money out on the table. Creates a culture of trust, and reduces any fear around stuff getting stolen. Overall, very glad I came here.

The showers are quite hot and the kitchen is good. Generally, the clientele is all ages, but very well behaved and friendly. I would highly recommend it. The free parking is very useful. Quiet hours are 9pm-9am.

Exactly what a hostel should be. However I was surprised that there were no lockers available for storing personal items securely, but if you lock your items it should be okay.
N. E.Absolutely wonderful. I cannot fault it. I stayed in the 4 bed mixed dorm and not only met some amazing people but had the best night sleep. The owners are incredible and you feel like you are at home there. They have great facilities and an honesty system which adds to the atmosphere. I stayed 3 night's and will be going back for sure if I head to Hobart again. 100% recommended 10/10. If your worried about the extra money as a back packer dont even if you can only stay 1 night you will love it.

J. J.Fantastic space created by owner, a comfortable and relaxing hostel. Beds are a delight! I think the mattresses are memory foam with sturdy wooden bunk frames. Rooms a good size with wonderful heating. Kitchen well equipped, although the space would be too cramped in peak season. Bathrooms excellent and very clean. Close to cafes and a short walk to Salamanca precinct. My first choice of hostel to stay in Hobart (and I HAVE tried them all).

M. H.Nice hostel, clean showers and toilets. Windows in the rooms could use new insulation, the wind howls through and the rooms tend to get cold in winter and spring. Kitchen is good. I had a lot of other guests who were very quiet. Not much talking with others. Staff is very friendly.

I really shouldn't knock a star off, but I had a terrible bunkmate for both nights I was there. Not the hostel's fault and just comes with the territory of staying in shared accommodation.
C. P.The place is lovely but the staff is not the most welcoming. I stayed in a shared room the bunker bed was shaky. The bedding has good quality but they need a new mattress. It's a bit pricy for a room without Air conditioner (fan wasn't enough during the day).

S. S.Stayed overnight in a queen room. It was excellent. The house is beautiful and we were greeted with a private tour by the owner. The shower/toilet facilities are clean and have good water pressure. You can even pat the two mini bulldogs!

G. H.Above all: excellent outgoing host! Awesome place to stay if you like a cosy atmosphere and a carefully made aesthetic. The red and white interior is very well done, there is art on both floors and almost every room. There are 4 showers and 4 toilets, a shared kitchen with a commercial fridge and very reasonably priced drinks (soda, beer). And the location is great! A short walk away from a great cafe and the restaraunts and art shops of Salamanca. And free wifi!

J. K.When we booked, we had no idea just how perfect the location is. Three ways to walk up the hill from Salamanca to Montacute and all scenic, 2 very historic walks (via Arthur Circus) or via Kelly Steps (look it up, built by James Kelly). Battery Point is peaceful away from Salamanca, and apart from one group of backpackers travelling in a bunch of 10 and were pretty clueless about etiquette, Montacute is quiet, comfortable, huge kitchen, lovely views out the back to Kunanyi/Mt Wellington and Ant the owner is never far away. We bookended our time in Tassie with 3 days here to start and 2 to finish and it was perfect. Got to give a plug to the best pie shop/bakery/coffee in the universe a very short walk from Montacute. Jackman and McRoss make scallop and wakame pies!! 10/10 :-)

Perfect location, amazing views from everywhere you are in the hotel, the common areas are luxurious with beautiful views, fire places, guitar and lounge areas! I absolutely love the style and uniqueness of this property I have never experienced anything like it! The artwork around the place is tremendous and plenty of stunning indigenous art paintings also which I found truely special as I am indigenous and not many hotels promote such Beautiful cultural artwork! The facilities are phenomenal kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms, dining and kitchen, outdoor courtyard, music room with large built in fire pit so peaceful sitting down in front of the fire playing guitar looking out the beautiful double French designed doors out looking the courtyard and Mountain views!! Also I was very impressed by the beautiful gardens everywhere I have so many stunning white roses blossoming right at my bedroom door! Thankyou to the owner for booking me in on such short notice! 10/10 stars!!

Atmosphere bully... The combination of lighting and interior is amazing in an antique mood. Clean rooms and toilets, shower rooms and kitchens! And the ingredients left behind by the people who stayed at the hostel (new placenta..) were available for free !! I meet a lot of friends here haha. It was fun to meet so many friends from Korea, China and Japan, to remote and Portuguese friends, and travel together!
If you go, don't get awkward, but say hello first and try to get close! Highly recommended :)

분위기 깡패...엔틱한 무드에 조명이랑 인테리어 조합이 정말 기가막힙니다. 깨끗한 방과 화장실, 샤워룸과 키친! 그리고 호스텔에서 묵었던 사람들이 남기고간 식재료들 (새거가 태반..) 프리로 사용할 수 있어서 좋더라구요 !! 저는 여기서 친구들 많이 만나고 갑니다 ㅎㅎ 한,중,일 만남과 오지친구, 포르투갈 친구까지 정말 많은친구들 만나고 함께 여행해서 즐거웠습니다!

另一問題是，如果住長一點日子，要洗衣服，掛衫的地方太細，而且地上放滿工具，衣物很容易弄髒。當然他們是有乾衣機的，但這不化算吧？
不過這裏的氣氛就真的很好，職員真的很友善，我住的時候，遇到職員們開生日會／感恩節啦！他們把蛋糕和住客分享，這很喎心！在電視常常見到外國人自己弄的蛋糕，今次有機會試，是很好的體驗。
