Wow am I glad that i stumbled upon this gem of a hostel. I had booked in to a different hostel initially just up the road but it had no atmosphere so I thought I would go see if there may be a better option around. Just a block over I found The Pickled Frog. I was greeted by a lovely girl named Jack. I felt so welcomed and at home that i decided to cancel my other booking and move down the road. There is a great bar which you can sit at and drink local beers and chat to the other guests and staff. Every one was so laid back and friendly that it really does feel like a home. The rooms are comfortable, the facilities are clean and the common area is super social with the added bonus of a pool table. The manager was a really nice guy with a pretty cool head of a hair and the other staff member Josh was a real champ. They all made it such a great experience! Thanks guys, I'll definitely be back! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Excellent hostel. Rooms can be small and a little tight with the bunk beds, but that is the standard in any hostel. Great social areas to hangout in complete with a TV which has always got a movie rolling, and a Pool table (1$ a game). Good staff, cheap beer. There may not be space in the fridge to keep food you are taking but that aside, The Pickled Frog is a win.

Awesome laidback hostel. Wonderful staff. Felt welcome and comfortable. Easy to meet other travellers. They offer daily extras and a notice board of things happening around Hobart and tours, was very helpful.
Very cool building.
I think some upgrades to beds/space for luggage/shelving in girls bathroom would make the hostel more functional for every traveller and an even better hostel experience.
Thank you 🐸
H.
Super fun place to stay, very warm atmosphere with friendly and helpful stuff. The building has lots of personality and cool art.
Could be better maintained in spots like the kitchen and bathrooms, but if you're picky, don't stay in a hostel

Stay here! It’s so perfect in many ways, relaxing, spacious, lively if you want it to be, clean, a real rustic traveller feel and comfortable beds to rest properly!
I stayed two nights at the start and end of my 5 day trip - It’s a lovely experience from start to finish! The staff are so welcoming and helpful.
I’d give it 10* if I could!
Thanks again, I’ll always be recommending to any fellow travellers.

Staff are very friendly and helpful, beds are a little firm, showers and toilets are shared and do have gaps which can be a little intimidating at first but everyone is respectful, shared kitchen can be a little crowded but if you pick your times right you will be fine. Hostel is nice, quiet and relaxed in the evenings. Only complaint is that all of the fridges are full and need a bit of a clean, as a suggestion maybe a once a week clean out to make sure people haven't left food behind. Would definitely recommend to friends and family as different experience, having the opportunity to meet people from all over the world and the place has some AMAZING art work! Somewhere cheap, relaxed, and a little quirky and fun to stay.

What an awesome hostel! Ok, so there isn't anything special about the facilities themselves, but you really can't complain about the pricing. Really, what makes this hostel so great is the atmosphere. The very reasonably priced bar certainly helps, but I would say the type of person this hostel attracts helps to get folks excited about interacting with each other. Between the awesomely friendly staff, stellar atmosphere, affordable bar, and low nightly rates, you should have a blast.

For a hostel with a bar, it's really good. Just not my style. I didn't sleep much because noise is LOUD until 11pm and the lights in the hall shine right through the glass on the door to my room. They covered the glass in paint, but not dark enough, so it was super bright in the room at night. Lots of noise from the hallway and the men's bathroom (it doesn't have a door! Ew.). But, one night there before I flew out was fine. It's more set up for younger folks. The staff are super friendly!
M. B.
One of my favourite hostels so far. Good vibe, you easily feel quite at home in the cosy living room. You have parking opportunities, laundry, a little bar and so on. Rooms are clean and in good condition. Staff is friendly and location is alright, too. I definitely recommend this hostel and would always come back!
S. B. S.
Excellent stay! My group and I were there this past October. Comfy beds and the staff was super friendly, we arrived early after a week doing camping so they allowed us to us the showers and the all the facilities (common area, laundry, kitchen etc). I will go back without doubts
A. H.
Friendly staff, great atmosphere, and the Frog Bus is a huge plus. I spent a lot of time by the fireplaces and in the TV lounge. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay but the hostel is old - no individual power sockets or lights in each bunk, the bathrooms/showers could use a paint job, and lack of central heating.
S. F.
Good hostel. I used the 12 bed rooms so my review is specifically for them and the amenities available. Decent rooms (6 bunk beds) but the lack of a window can make them smell (though that depends on your bunk mates). The amenities are nice and more than usable and are kept quite clean. Finally, the staff here are amazing, incredibly friendly and more than willing to help.
D. g.
The hostel is badly in need of renovating, and a through deep clean. The common room and bar area downstairs are nice, with plenty of seating, and they have quite few trips etc running for free, and it generally seems a fairly social hostel. The dorms were very old, with creaky floors and old bed linen. There is only one sink in the bathroom, and it also is in need of updating. The kitchen was very messy also. Overall, the whole place just needs a complete refit.
L. A.
Great hostel! Although during winter it was quite dead, the staff did their best to introduce guests to one another, tell guests about events going on in town (writing them on the board), and giving great directions and advice! Alex and Taylor(Jenn) were amazing about helping us book some tours, and they also decided to do mulled wine on Mondays too, since I would miss the Wednesday they usually make it! So nice of them! Wifi is really strong and works throughout the building. The women's bathroom was always really clean, which I appreciated. There were small lockers in the hallway available for holding passports and small valuable items.
The reason it got 4 stars is because the facilities could definitely use some updates, the place is really really old. Mostly the common areas and the actual mattresses, felt like the beds have withstood much wear & tear. Also, feels like the common areas are really dark.
S. S.
Kitschy, eclectic space with a great vibe. The dorms were clean, the common spaces ample. Staff is incredibly patient and helpful. Salamanca and Constitution Dock (MONA ferry!) are a 10 minute walk, in addition to lots of eateries ($-$$$$) and groceries. Communal luggage room available with lockers for a fee (didn’t use cuz my dorm mates were awesome and there was plenty of storage space under and around the bunks). Minimalist accommodation but so cozy and welcoming. Will definitely stay here again!
L. F.
Loved this hostel. Such a social environment, with super helpful staff. The bathrooms were always clean and the beds comfy.
Make sure to check the daily activities and grab a drink at the bar!
N. M.
+ Affordable
+ Loads of open-minded, friendly people. Therefore easy to socialise with strangers
+ great music in the lounge area (60s to 80s mostly. Fleetwood Mac, The Who, AC/DC, Lou Reed are some artists that I remember)
+ nice art on the walls
+ Big TV with netflix and lots of movies
+ pool table and arcade machines
+ Overall great vibe
+ Free parking, but you have to be lucky to find a spot as everyone of course wants to park for free. No big deal with a motorbike
o Furniture is a bit run down in some places, didn't bother me as it kinda compliments the vibe
- Shower doors and ceiling in the hallway in front of 1st floor bathrooms are mouldy. Not surprised after I saw the bathroom ceiling fans completely blocked by dust. Should be an easy fix
- Extremely smelly male bathroom on ground level, can be smelled even when walking past. Should be an easy fix as well
- Uncomfortable metal spring mattresses
All in all I can really recommend this hostel as it is the most social and cozy hostel I have stayed in so far, though management needs to adjust the cleaning procedures a little.
c. f.
rooms are nice and tidy, no weird smells with comfy mattresses. All the facilities are really good with a nice kitchen with cameras so you know all your foods safe. the staff are super frendlynand nice also super helpful and the hostel offers free tours andnothe fun stuff to do daily. w8th cconsidersstion I'm how cheap it is you really couldn't ask for any more
A. L.
Frankly it isn’t the cleanest hostel, I’ve stayed in. But almost certainly one of the coziest. It’s an awesome place to meet travelers. Probably the best place in Hobart for great conversations around a fire place and incredibly good beer and cider. The pickled frog is about connection. When in Hobart go there.
E. P.
With a name like "Pickled Frog" you should know this place is going to be a little...interesting. The staff are the usual friendly hostel type, and the reception area has lots of seating and can serve you a drink right there. The ground floor also has a billiard table, a couple tvs, a small library, kitchen, and laundry room. The sleeping rooms are nothing special, and the overall location of the hostel is a little further away than I'd like but Hobart is small so nothing is really "that" far away.
T. H.
Loved this hostel! Great social spaces, awesome kitchen, excellent wifi, good location a bit away from the city. I'm a late-twenties backpacker and I liked both the larger dorm and the smaller one that I stayed in. Rustic, not spotless, but friendly staff and a welcoming atmosphere.
A. W.
Very authentic backpackers hostel with fantastic decor. Resident dogs always happy with pats. Showers could do with a bench seat and curtains, bunks move a lot, could be bolted to the wall to improve. Large, comfortable common areas. 20 minute walk to basically anywhere in the city you want to go.
f. g. v.
What an awesome hostel! I went to Hobart without any plans and no accommodations and when I first arrived, such a nice surprise, Sara welcome me nicely give me the best tips ever (seriously guys u should keep her in your staff and raise her payments) ahahahaha
I just saw platypus cause of her. The atmosphere was great, kitchen well equipped and people always done for a pool game! I would recommend this place if you are alone trying to make new friends. Every day free trips to discover the area ( help to keep your travel cheap) more than that you can enjoy the highlights with a very local dudes (Alex was amazing, he traveled me to Mt fields, Mt Wellington, MONA) always with a big smile in face sharing his knowledge and teaching and learning about all diferents languages and countries in the van. Very fair price with all facilities that you need in your trip. The room was a litle bit noisy though (the floor to be specific) but nothing that you wouldn't survive. Thank you guys to make me feel happy at home!!!!
Wish you all the best!!
Cheers,
D. J.
Enjoyed my stay at this hostel. Clean facilities, great atmosphere with the benefit of spacious & tidy rooms. I would happily recommend this hostel to anyone looking to stay in Hobart. On the plus side, if you don't clean up your dishes the staff play Justin Bieber, deliberately. Great chat! Clean up your dishes, folks!
G. V.
It was the first hostel I never been and I felt in love immediately. My plan was stay two nights, I spent almost four months. Great place, and awesome staff, they are my second family in australia. I really hope I can come back one day.
E.
Very cosy place, feels like the living room I'd like to have. Table foosball, pool table, kitchen with everything you need (no oven, though). Beds are standard hostel beds; although not particularly comfortable but squeaky, they do the job.
Cleanliness is very good!
Staff are great, quick and amazing at multitasking haha.
My only but main issue is the air circulation in the 2 big rooms downstairs, there's only one tiny part of the window that opens so it gets incredibly stuffy in there with 10 people...
But I'd definitely recommend staying there :D
P. C.
Nice hostel. The rooms are nice, though can be a little loud (as with all hostels) and bathrooms were a bit gross. But great events, very social and very comfy beds :)
G. P.
great bar, good staff too, everyone is pretty tolerant. Just keep the noise down after 11, walls are paper thin and you arent gonna get by without earplugs here. but the common area is the best ive seen in a hostel. really warm and homey with great ginger beer for sale at the same price as the liquor store across the street. Some hostels thrive on getting everyone hammered 24/7 and being in a cool location - this place just exists. I however would have given 4 stars due to the rooms if I hadn't seen the property manager seeing to it that new paint and photos were being put up on the inside and outside of the building. The reverence for an older property like this one tells me that these guys know what their doing, purchased a T-Shirt and was on my way... Oh, also to anyone reading this - I left 3 pairs of glasses in my room there. Nothing too expensive, but just save em for the next time I come back ;)
P.
Some of the most fun I've had in my adult life. Great place with cool and interesting people. I don't even care that the mattresses are hard and the dorms all have emergency exit lights that illuminate the room all night. My only regret is not staying longer.
J. B.
Nice private room but a bit dark. Good showers and well equipped kitchen. Best part was the common areas with games, pool table, couches plus a fire place. Friendly service.
H. M.
One of the best hostels I've ever stayed in. Amazing staff, huge common area with plenty of tables and seating, big kitchen, free shuttles to local attractions, and the most beautiful dogs in reception. Would definitely recommend this place to anyone travelling through or looking for an extended stay .
J. P. (.
Good hostel! We all love frogs and green is of course the best colour but the hostel has more to offer. Barista coffee, parking spots and excellent dorms. You won't regret staying here!
A. W. C.
Good clean hostel in a decent location. Has a good community vibe, a kitchen, laundry, and bar. A great option if you are on a budget. Some parking available.
K. K.
The Pickled Frog is a wonderful hostel with tons of character. The staff, particularly Deano, were so helpful to me not only during my stay but also 6 weeks later when I needed them to provide me with invoices for my stay due to a car accident. They've got a great selection of tea, a bar, a big common area with movies and a huge tv, a big kitchen, the water is very hot, and best of all, all the noise from downstairs does not carry into the upstairs accommodation when you're ready to sleep. It was a lovely place to stay and next time I visit Hobart, I'll be staying there again. Thanks, Frogonians!
J. S.
The building have been fully renovated and it is a great place to stay in Tasmania if you like to meet people! I went there in June, so it was a bit chilly but I still had an amazing time. The staff was very friendly, there were not too many people so I didn't had any issue with the noise or anything. Great place to stay, great people... I definitely recommend it :)
F.
Solid little stop. Staff really helpful and he rejigged the rooms around so we got a bottom bunk each, which ended up in us having a private room, very gassed. Room was basic but all we needed, duvet well nice and warming. Would stay again fo sho
T. S.
Jimmy and Emma are really lovely people who bend over backwards for everyone. The rest of the staff are also super friendly and chilled. The hostel itself is so cosy and has great facilities, especially the free bus rides! The best part is the vibe, not met a bad person while I've stayed here... Only complaint is that they should switch to gas jobs in the kitchen as the ones they have are temperamental.
It'll be very hard to leave 'le frog'.
S. V.
Awesome place! Great atmosphere :)
The staff really wants you to have a good time. They're doing tours to cool places, such a nice way to discover Tasmania and meet new people. Would definitely recommend this place!

When I think of the architype for a hostel The Pickled Frog comes to mind
The staff were fantastic. I booked a 12 bed dorm and got upgraded to a 4 bed room. I renewed my stay 3 times and they allowed me to stay in that dorm while paying the price for a 12 bed dorm which I absolutely loved.
They do some free tours during the week. I took the free bus to Mount Wellington. It was a beautiful day and it couldn't be better.
There is a good kitchen, free computers, bar, pool table, tv, good common areas and a lively atmosphere to it. There is also Baloo the cutest dog of all time. He is worth staying there alone for.
D. P.
Lovely staff, lovely crowd, good location. Free WiFi. TV, pool table, bar, BYOB allowed. Free shuttle bus two or three times a week to attractions, national parks and places of interest. Plenty of plugs in rooms. 10/10
D. A.
I just checked in so really I should write this when I leave, but, fun atmosphere, I suppose the rooms are small but I took room 20 with a bunk and a single and it's alright. There's quite a bit of community space, a nice large kitchen, pool, a bar, free WiFi. I'm liking it so far.
T.
Amazing! I was only to stay a few nights until I could find a houseshare… ended up staying there 2 months and a half. The staff are just the most nicest people I've ever met (as long as you remember to do your dishes ^-^) and Baloo is… well, most huggable fluffy dog ever.
Cheap rooms, good beer, excellent coffee and AMAZING hot chocolate, close to the center (like, 5 minutes from Elisabeth Mall), helpful people: Awesome place.
M. L.
Fun atmosphere, spacious common rooms with couches, TV, tables to work and stuff. Halls covered with artworks. Their free tours to Mt. Wellington are a cool addition. And the two cute (and huge) dogs are a must-see as well!
A. Z.
I gave it five stars because they do free trips for guests to different places. The van ride up to the top of the mountain is an outstanding value. Call the hostel and get the schedule and plan your stay accordingly. May need to book the trip in advance as space is limited.
S. A.
Great hostel. Stayed here in may and it was a biit chilly but the staff were extremely helpful. Baloo the bear was the sweetest dog.
Cheap beer and great atmosphere. Pool tables and tvs as well as a dining area. If you're looking for a cheap place to stay in Hobart this is it. Clean and comfortable rooms and bathrooms.
Make sure you check out port Arthur and rent a car if you visit, you won't regret it!
E. L.
Great hostel with a an awesome atmosphere!! Free shuttles are a bonus!! Drawbacks: only 1 sink per bathroom per floor and there are no lockers in the rooms.
A. S.
The best backpackers in hobart. Big kitchen, bar, lounge, movie and reading collections. The kitchen had plenty utencils for everbody. The lounge was huge with a pool table, vending machine, couch seating infront of the tv to watch movie, bar style tables to seat and eat all over the lounch, at the corner a small reading place with chairs and phone charger. There were many interesting books available for free. The bar area was big too. The price of beer was cheaper than other pub. Need to mention the free parking place behind and two washing machines and dryers. Wifi available but password changes. But the shower, need regular servicing as becuse of rough use only 2 of the 3 remained functional.
C.
Located in the CBD of Hobart, close to the pickup/drop off point of the airport shuttle. The hostel is big with lots of common area for lounging/socializing. Laundry was a bit on the expensive side. Poor sound isolation! Noise from the other end of the hallway can be heard.
R. M.
Decent backpackers, but extremely cramped. Our (4 blokes) room was so small that even when only two of us were in the room it required communication as well as the removal of any semblance of personal space in order to do even the most basic of things like getting dressed. For some reason the room had a sink in it, however this only caused more climbing over eachother to use. The bathroom facilities were laughable. 2 of 3 of my showers were cold, and the room whilst technically meeting all requirements to call it a bathroom is still only one step up from a tin shed with a leaky roof. The interior 'walls' of the the bathroom have been slapped together and are ill suited for their purpose and give the impression that someone eyeballed the measurements of the entire place. The corridoor that gradually gets shorter and shorter and leads nowhere is also evidence of this. All in all I still rate this 3/5 because I've been to enough backpackers to know that none of this is out of the ordinary for your average backpackers. But they certainly dont do anything amazing to set themselves apart.
G. M.
The free shuttle buses to mt Wellington, the tassie devil reserve and MONA are really good. Well located, only a short walk from the city centre. Very friendly staff, rooms are small but good, kitchen has everything you need. Would definitely recommend.
y.
very friendly and helpful staff. The provided tours are good, but you have to book early to have room. the beer and company were good, and the dogs are totally adorable (5 stars just for them)
M. B.
Great place to stay of you are in Hobart. Rooms have renovated and the wall paintings are so awesome. Kitchen and bathrooms are clean and well maintained. The lounge and the bar are a great place to meet interesting people.
n. r.
Super tidy hostel with great tours. Beds weren't the best and a bit noisy. But, a great place to meet folks and see Hobart from.
I.
Typical hostel vibe type place.
Great staff and a nice bar.
Large open common areas with a pool table make it comfortable
B. A.
Very enjoyable stay here BUT we did have an inccident with a belligerent French man. He chose to woke up the room at 7am New Years Day, screaming that he had been robbed only to find out after 3 hours of bad mouthing half the hostel that he had only lost his phone charger
M. G.
Great, friendly staff. Serve beer and coffee at the bar for a good price. The building isn't in the best of shape, but they've done well giving it a lot of character and artistic touches.
Z. M.
So we arrive and good bud at the counter is v friendly helpful etc. All good. But we go into the like living room or whatever and theres a coupld people watching Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby. Which is a shame, but no big deal. So we unpack and have a cheap beer and play some cheap pool, it's good stuff. Anyhow, the next night, we go out for some beers in the evening, and when we get back to the hostel at like 1130, and my friend! The living room is packed out with people, all watching The Great Gatsby?! Like two days in a row with this? And, like so many people watching it, in a hostel, on a Friday night?! Are people just really into this movie? Why? What's going on? Btw, u get a free beer if u like the hostel on FB, that's a pretty sweet deal hey.
C. T.
Nice hostel with a chill vibe. Amenities are basic but clean and there are lots of common areas to hang out in. Staff were helpful and friendly.
K. V.
Very nice place to stay. Plenty of room to socialize and meet other guests. Fun vibe and safe. However there are no lockers in the rooms for personal items.
M. W.
A well-equipped hostel occupying an old hotel. Although parking is "available", note that there are limited spaces and you may miss out. Very central and close to shops.
P. D.
If you would like to spend a great time in Hobart , that’s the place you need ! The staff is really awesome and the location is good ! Bar, living room, everything is design to just chill with your friends ;) !
H. H.
Pickled frog is in a prime location, walking distance from the centre of hobart. The service is great and rooms are in okay condition. Very affordable, will recommend for those who are looking for hostels
J. H.
Great atmosphere, really friendly staff, and you can hang out with their dogs Baloo & Nala who are the best! Took their free shuttle up Mt. Wellington, and they also provide some transport to MONA! Easy walking distance to all the major sights in Hobart.
X. X.

T. F.
Brilliant staff, good drinks at a decent price, awesome environment. Rooms a good size, good amenities. 10/10 would stay at the frog again
T. N.
Everything you could ask for in a hostel. Cozy, great personality. It's definitely not the Hilton but didn't try to be.
C. F.
Good living room but the room are really little there is no place to put your stuff. And there is not enough shower.
v. g.
I stayed many days at The Pickled Frog and loved it! Everyone who works there is great, cheerful, polite and helpful! The atmosphere is also nice and the location is great!
C. M.
Clean, friendly staff, good kitchen, pool table, rec areas, free wifi. A great little hostel.
C. S.

A. U.
This is one of the coolest hostels I've ever stayed at. I love the bar and the artwork. I will definitely stay again when I'm in town.
K. B.
The restrooms are not so clean and was hard to find a parking spot near the bar, but other than that I had a good time. The service was great!
A. S.
Good lil place, great staff who help out with things like what to do and where to go. Pool, darts and other fun stuff to do. Would recommend for a cheap option where you'll likely have some fun.
M. P.
Great hostel but the kitchen was a bit small and could use more cups and flatware.
J. P.

Great place to stay. Friendly, helpful staff. Great free tours😀
V. W.
Good rooms but can get overly noisy on some nights with rowdy guests
D. s.
The pickled frog is so central just a hop skip and jump to everything .The only downfall is the slamming of the door which was right underneath us .The room was okay great for backpackers .
S. D.
A bit pricey for what it's worth. Stayed at another AirBnB for a similar rate with much better amenities.
S. B.
Fun hostel. Cool bar, would stay again. Check out the waffle cafe down the street!
T. N.
Stayed in a 4 person room, pretty small but friendly and cheep beers.

(Translated) Small but cozy! But the only but is the beds shaking
Warm and affordable, the kitchen is large and the refrigerator is more! The washing machine is small and expensive (the laundry and drying clothes are five Australian dollars). The bed is very swaying. Try not to sleep on the upper floor. There is always an illusion that the bed will fall off. XD

Small but cozy! But the only but is the beds shaking
溫馨平價,廚房大而且冰箱多!洗衣機小貴(洗衣烘衣各五澳幣)床非常晃,盡量不要睡上鋪比較好,總有一種床會垮掉的錯覺XD

(Translated) A backpacker who is charming and very well placed in Hobart. Nevertheless the bedding leaves a little to be desired and the cleanliness of the establishment can be questionable on certain points (a single sheet for the bed without duvet cover)
(Original)
Un backpacker qui a du charme et très bien placé dans Hobart. Néanmoins la literie laisse un peu à désirer et la propreté de l'établissement peut être douteuse sur certains points (un seul drap pour le lit sans housse de couette)

(Translated) Broad common area. Has Free tour to Mt. Wellington, which is great (cost would be AUD 30). Tour to MONA is less useful (it's only one way, regular bus goes there). There are no lockers in the rooms, but there are electrical outlets for everyone. Bathroom has plenty (but only one sink).

(Translated) It's tidying up for the bapper and it's reasonably comfortable. bar? There is a place like, where you can order a drink and use it as a Wi-Fi spot. There is a fireplace, and winter is saved! There are two big husky. It's friendly, so I'm glad I love dogs, but if I'm not good at dogs, I may be a little troubled because I'm free-ranging.
