Stayed here for 2 nights for a holiday with a friend. We chose Best Western because of the great price and flexibility. The free cancellation also provided us with comfort to travel during such uncertain times.
Location is super convenient - right next to Southern Cross station with easy access to trams, trains and buses.
Staff were extremely helpful and accommodated an early check-in for us, which was greatly appreciated after our early morning flight.
The room and bathroom were clean and comfortable. They were a bit smaller than average, but this is to be expected for the price. During our holiday we spent most of our time exploring the city so we didn't mind the smaller size of the rooms anyway.
Thank you Best Western for a great experience!!

What can I say about the Best Western Melbourne City Hotel?
I was given a room that wasn’t clean and with no working lights. There was hair in the bed and used masks everywhere. I was about to pull a Karen but the helpful man with a beard and glasses who works at reception changed me to a much nicer room with a double bed that even had its own courtyard. The room was beautiful and clean and I had no complaints.
The same man with glasses would whisper to his friend and stare at me every time I walked past reception while I was there. Dunno what that was about. I must just be one of those difficult customers who likes to sleep in a bed without someone else’s hair in it.
However, I have no reason to give any less than 5 stars for what was the nicest room I have stayed in for 100 bucks a night ! Bravo!

Not outwardly bad, however the power point next to our bed didn't work.
Perhaps I'm easily disturbed, but I could hear quite a bit of activity at around 3am through the ceiling, which made it difficult to sleep, perhaps something to consider if you need a quiet space. I don't know why people need to be running around so much at that time.
Otherwise, staff were quite friendly too.

Rooms are fine but bathroom is so small. Difficult to get in and out of shower if a slightly large person. A basic hotel indeed.

Great location, an to the customer service was great as well. Now i didnt stay here my friend did. But it was our stop drop location. We brought things an had luggage to drop somewhere till we had our rooms ready, not once did they question, dont get me wrong they did pay attention to what was going on, an NO at anytime did we disrespect the hotel an stay, we dropped an picked up our things as soon as we were done. Very clean, very nice an a great entrance to the hotel. Fun an oldskool vibe
I. K.
Excellent. Well situated. Comfortable. And quiet. The shower wasn't as good as the one in my house. I'd stay here again

Small room but we knew that, perfect for an overnighter, clean and comfortable.
S. L.
Nice spacious trio room.. we r enjoying the stay. Staffs r great quick check in n close to southern Cross stn
Y. B.
Good budget hotel. Right close to Melbourne CBD, cleanliness could be better. Another downside was that due to covid their cafe is closed. Good choice for a short stay and a small budget
D. P.
Small rooms but you get what you pay for and was very responsible for what we paid. Would not recommend for a long stay but a night or 2 ok.
P. J.
Great locality, perfect place if you want comfortable bedding and limited room space to explore Melbourne CBD. Very clean and welcoming staff
O. H.
Clean and quiet. Shoebox room perfect for solo traveller. Great price.

We got stuck in Melbourne due to Sydney lockdown and this hotel has been so good to us and looked after us so well. The staff are so friendly and helpful, the cleaning staff are amazing, the room is amazing value and they even gave us free washing powder and a microwave for our room. We couldn’t ask for a better place to be Sydney castaways in. 10/10!
G. M.
Small rooms clean and tidy close to all city restaurants including crown casino
C. S.
Nice little room for the night. Very clean

Great service nice big rooms very dear

The building looks old and a little worn from the outside but the rooms are neat and tidy. The bathrooms are just far too small and cramped with tiny sinks and not much space in the showers either. Staff were nice and courteous so it’s not all doom and gloom and it’s also good value for money so this hotel is fine for a quick short stay.
j. l.
I stayed here just overnight using it as a bed and shower location. The room was small but I knew that at time of booking. It was clean and not worn down. Only thing to note the hot water in the shower took quite sometime to come through.
M. S.
No cleaning and lift does not work properly .

Great location for getting around the city on foot. A short walk from Southern Cross Station. Our room was basic, but clean and functional. The bathroom was on the small side, but as we were only staying for one night it didn't cause any issues. Just a short walk to the river and restaurant precinct. Close to Crown Casino. The staff were amazing, very friendly and attentive. They were helpful with our needs. There was a bit of noise from the passing trains. Didn't get any noise from adjoining rooms. Roof top area was fantastic at night. Great to see the lights of the city. Next time we might even bring our pet! Overall we were happy with our stay and would consider returning.

This hotel is centrally located which is most attractive part right across southern cross and in Spencer street . Though the hotel from outside looks old but inside its well maintained and clean .I felt the room designing is weird as the room was decently good but toilet/ bathroom super small
The primary concern was the bathroom - it was micro mini . Its the smallest I have ever been too . If you are big size , you really need to rethink twice before booking .
Secondly noise during the day , you can literally hear people walking across the corridors. You really cannot sleep during the day. Feel like rooms were made with false ceiling. Breakfast was minimal.
Would recommend only for small stay.

On my first stay I got one of the refurbished rooms on the ground floor. It was small, but attractive, quiet and comfortable. I booked again and was given an old room on level two. Noise from the train line shook the room all night, and the shower door was so small I couldn't fit through it without significantly scraping my skin (you would have to be very slim to avoid this). A great location for vline travellers, and good pricing, but the older rooms desperately need refurbishment.
J. H.
A nice hotel to stay in because it is near a lot of public transport system. The room was big and well-maintained. The staff were very professional and friendly to all the guest. Their service was very fast and on point. The food was delicious as well. I highly recommend Best Western!
M. K.
The location is excellent. The room where I stayed was clean but not the best I've seen. Quite old I would say. The shower room is rather small and also not new. The breakfast was quite limited. Anything hot (like eggs or sausages) isn't free of charge. In general, it was OK for this price. I just expected to get something a little bit better quality.
J. P.
With a name like "Shoebox" you'd be forgiven that you were about to stay the night in something not much bigger than a small cupboard. However, I was pleasantly surprised to open the door and find three single beds with more then enough room to walk between them. I suspect the bathroom was the reason for the descriptor though, as you'd want to be close friends with those staying. Closing the door and still having enough room to move about in there would prove a challenge to any adult. But, I was on my own, and the room was cheap enough, quiet enough and clean enough for me. Free wifi and proximity to the Spencer Street Station rounded up what I considered a damn good deal.
T. M.
The wash basin is a bit small for brushing teeth & cleaning face. In order to boil the water, you need to scoop a few cups of water into the flask since you cant fit it into the basin. Other than that, I had a peaceful sleep on the bed as …
S. C.
Location is good. Short walk to conference centre. Room is comfortable enough but the sink is really small. I think the price is reasonable. There is a cafe for breakfast and a Thai massage.. I will go back again if I am on a budget . surely, you shall get points for your. Stay
P. C.
Had a great time in the Double Suite. It was small, but perfect if you don't plan on staying in the hotel itself much. For the price I thought it was great. The only issue we had was that the air conditioning / heating was facing the bed, which felt a bit odd when sleeping.
K. B. (.
While the room was a tight fit, and the bed a little too small to be comfortable (with a second body and a cat to fight for it), this hotel was very clean, stylish and accommodating. The price was a little up there, but as we had a pet with us we were happy to pay. Reception staff were happy to prioritise our room when we arrived early at 9am with bags to store, and upon an early checkin at midday, they supplied us with food/water bowls and a kitty litter tray for our travelling companion.
The location was perfect - a short walk to Southern Cross Station and just across the road and around the corner from Sea Life Aquarium and Crown Casino - great locations for a fun day out and some good food.
The bathroom included in the room while tight was clean and updated. Plenty of hot water and pressure to match. Air-conditioning worked very well. The included TV had good speakers and a range of channels for those lazy nights.
The courtyard that came with the room (this the Pet-Friendly option) was small and quaint, with a concreted 1m square area and some foliage/dirt around the edges for pets to do their business.
Overall a pleasant experience, and would recommend looking into larger rooms if price is not an issue.

I stayed here for a conference at the Crown Conference Center.
I was able to tack on a day before and after the current booking to extend my stay through email. It was fairly easy to do even after a few date errors.
I checked in very early and my room wasn't ready (understandably) so I dropped off my bags and went on a tour. It was handy that they are open late as I didn't get back until 0100 without a room key. I did have to wait a while (about 30 min) though as the doors were closed and there was no one manning the desk. It was easy to get the key and my bags were already waiting for me in my room.
The room was a lot smaller than I expected. Small desk by the window (which looked into the rooms across the small garden) and a small toilet and shower, which might've been smaller than ones in Tokyo. I was fortunate to have a double room to myself so I did have enough room for my luggage and didn't have to clamber over anything. I did find the bed a bit short.
The rooms were clean. I found the TV to be on a bad angle but I didn't use it much. There was daily housekeeping for towels and beds. They supplied shampoo, body wash, and soap as well. They also had tea and coffee but not hot chocolate.
I found the staff quite helpful and friendly. It has a really good location, 5 minutes from Southern Cross station where I got the Skybus to/from the airport. It was a bit far to the other places in the city but it was just a free tram ride away, from a stop a few minutes down the road. It was about a 10-minute walk to the Casino across the Yarra River.
The rooms are quite small so that is something to be aware of. There also wasn't much to look out from the windows. It has a really good location and I thought it was quite clean.

This hotel has lovely modern, clean facilities and is in a fantastic location. The rooms are fairly small but it is all you need. The staff are really friendly and the cafe out front is good for coffee. Excellent value for the price; I have stayed twice and would stay again.
K. H.
Room was ok however it was very small, and the amenities inside seem old. By design the bathroom door doesn't fully close due to the bathroom not containing an exhaust fan, which makes for awkward experiences when staying with a friend. Hotel location however is good but wouldn't stay longer than a night or two
S. T. (.
The customer service was fantastic and happily looked after our bags before check in and after. The location was perfect for visiting the Convention Center as well as the Aquarium. The room was ok. The bathroom was a bit run down and the room itself (a king bed with single) was small but it was fine for an overnight stay where we weren't in the room for long.
W. J.
My room was very comfortable and clean. The bed and pillows were amazing. The shower was a little too small, but it serves it's purpose. The location of the hotel is just amazing! Only meters away from one of the free tram zone stations. The staff was extremely friendly and willing to help to make my visit amazing. Would definitely come back to Pensione next time!

Clean, quiet place to stay. Helpful staff. Reasonable price.
L. L.
Location is perfect and the price is competitive. Having said that, certain things need improvement which should not affect their price point. Both my pillows were lumpy so sleep was not great. Room was clean but the floor squeaks a lot! Bathroom is clean and functional. The ironing board was a waste of time because there was hardly any padding on it to iron clothes properly. The WORST bit was that I found hair of the curly kind in the filter of the kettle. Luckily I could remove the filter so i didn't bother complaining as complaining wouldn't have changed anything.
S. A.
It's a good hotel. The property seems a little dated. It has an elevator that takes forever to reach the 2nd floor😃!! I selected a shoebox room only to realise that with large travel bags after a long stay in Sydney there was very little space in the room. Location wise couldn't have asked for a better deal...just 5 min walking distance from Southern Cross Station. Economical for the location. Service was to the mark so that's a plus as well. I enjoyed the breakfast at Oliver's Cafe!!
j. j.
Location, cleaners, valued for rate.
Excelent clean bed few step of southern cross station
C. B.
Really nice location just around the corner from the tram and down the road from the station. Rooms are quite small but perfectly adequate. Staff were all friendly, attentive and helpful. Nice little view from the roof and a good breakfast buffet, toasted sandwich press is a nice touch. Would recommend and stay again.
W. D.
Rooms live up to their description - a shoebox- including the bathroom which was tiny. Air conditioner didn't work, and window opened onto an enclosed light well. TV didn't swivel, so was difficult to watch from bed, which was the only place to watch it from, and not all free to air stations were tuned. Too small for two people travelling with luggage, but probably OK if you just want somewhere clean to sleep.
J. M.
Good stay, room small but new and pleasant
T. M.
Great location and very clean. Although my room and bathroom were tiny, it was the perfect spot for a night’s stay in the city. Very friendly staff, too. The southern cross train station and airport shuttle are less then 10 min on foot, just up the road.
S. L.
Location is great, walking distance to major trains and tram routes. Service is excellent, the room is perfect. However, the breakfast was a little disappointing as there were no eggs. After the first morning, the rest of the week I decided to find breakfast elsewhere.
J. S.
Cosy little room, Warm, Close to everything. I would stay again BUT 3 stars was for the way I was treated by the manager upon checking out. Had to see that my daughter and I didnt trash or steal from the room before I could get my deposit back (REALLY DUDE?!) yet he was happy for another guest to walk out AFTER me without a blink. Not a SINGLE word was spoken to me, Not even a smile? No eye contact just a nod of approval to reception and my money was given back. No thank you for staying or "How was your stay?"
But hey! The staff on Check in were AMAZING!!! Thanks guys 👍🏼
C. L.
Brilliant little hotel and fantastic value for money. Polite, helpful and efficient desk staff and cosy quiet room with enough amenities for a great stay. Yes, room and bathrooms are small so if you need them larger, pay more and go elsewhere. A few steps from the free tram network.
E.
The room was really clean and comfortable but quite a lot smaller than we expected from the website (double room.) It also had only one window that opened onto the corridor of the hotel so we got no natural light. It was a bit small for two people with a few suitcases but we managed ok. Also the wifi while free was very slow in our room and in the cafe.
Good customer service though at the hotel reception and cafe. Cafe food was good and service was fast and friendly. We also enjoyed happy hour.
V. S. (.
Hotel staff polite and helpful. Rooms are clean, housekeeping service is excellent. Location of the hotel near southern cross station and few steps away from city free tram stop.
A. Y.
During our short term of stay at Pensione, the experience has been good, the staff are friendly, the housekeepers are brilliant! They come change your sheets and towels everyday! And fold your clothes for you, can't ask for more! Only thing is that ventilation in the bathroom is not the best, and the bathroom door won't shut properly. Location is great! It's literally close to everything! Would recommend anyone for a short time stay.
E. L. M.
Fantastic location, rooms are clean and comfortable. The girls at reception are super friendly. The bathrooms are a little small but that didn't bother me. I would definitely stay here again :-)
L. D.
Wonderful place for a short visit/business or for a night stay. Took a shoe room size room and was suprisingly comfortable and had all the basic necessities. Its a good place if u dont plan on spending majority of the day out and need a room to sleep after getting exhausted from sight seeing. Tram stop 1 min away n another 2 mins away. Train station 8 mins walking.
A. N.
The hotel was clean and the staff was friendly but the room was tinyyyyy! I definitely had a minor case of claustrophobia in the shower too (which had horrible water pressure). Our hotel room door couldn't even open up all the way because it hit the bed. The bed was also tiny. The air conditioning was hard to control and intermittent. The Internet was SOOOO SLOW! It was very frustrating. The hotel has a good location but does not have any amenities. I would not stay here again.
a. b.
Rooms are fine but bathrooms are really very very small. Service is good. Breakfast inclusive is not available. Quite close to southern cross station and comes in the free tram zone. Good restaurants around.
A. M.
Beautifully renovated hotel just minutes away from Southern Cross train station. Lovely staff and the café is nice too. The rooms are quite small, but for a renovated antique hotel they've done it as best as they can. I'd definitely stay again; the facilities and staff were wonderful.
Z. J.
I stayed in the shoebox room, and it really is a shoebox. There is no wasted space in this room. It does feel a little cramped, but not overly so, everything you need is somehow made to fit. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. I would recommend people purchasing the internet upgrade ($5 per 25hr) as the free internet is extraordinary slow.
A. S.
Awesome place to stay would recommend and come back!
Place is in the hub, opposite a tram stop and walking distance to the train station/CBD. We got the sky bus to the station and then walked down it was really good how close it all is. The rooms are awesome, TV, Fridge, Iron, Tea/Coffee and Air Con. The place was really quiet didn't hear any outside noise which was a plus. Housekeeping was excellent, the room was cleaned everyday which was really nice. All of the staff were very friendly and helpful. The rooftop terrace area was nice good to sit around and have a few drinks. Overall this place was awesome exactly what we were after and the price was right!
I. V.
Beautiful stylish rooms, lovely smell filling the air from the massage center, lovely accommodating staff. Beautiful cafe inside and really good set out. And perfect location, all around beautiful hotel and great prices and value for money!!!
M. G.
Room is okay but very small. Bathroom door is sliding and doesn't close properly meaning no privacy as others in the room can see you. A number of strip clubs and "massage" parlours are nearby, giving the area a bit of a seedy feel.
M. A.
Stayed in a matchbox type room. Very cosy with everything you need. Room is very clean. Check in was fast. We arrived in the morning but was surprised that the staff could give us a room. Very friendly reception. The hotel is also near to train station.
B. C.
Stayed here for two nights for a short family holiday. The hotel is rated as 3 stars on google, but I felt that the service in this hotel superseded the physical structure of the property. Had initially booked a double room for my wife, infant daughter and myself.
However, upon arrival, the lady at reception who checked us in, upgraded us to a trio room so as to better accommodate a portacot for our daughter. This was a lovely gesture and a sign of excellent customer service. The staff were friendly at every interaction.
The double room we initially checked into, was small but very well lit. A nice little space. But it is literally that, little.
The room we were moved to was very spacious but dark. The two windows were facing a small inaccessible courtyard which was also quite dark. The room was however, very large and had ample space.
Both rooms had split system Airconditioning installed. Which meant that we were able to control the temperature of the room well. Which was nice.
The hotel has a great location near Southern Cross station as well as various tram stops along Flinders and Spencer streets.
The hotel has a cafe attached which opens early (Olivier’s) for which I found very good. I have written a separate review for that.
Overall, the stay at the Pensione was great. Would stay again.
K. B.
Room walls are paper thin & courtyard attached to room has no light. Half my TV channels don't work, yesterday you said the signal would return in an hour, still nothing a day later. Regardless, great price and location, good if you don't really give a f* but don't want to stay at a backpackers.
L. F.
Wonderful service by the staff there, amazing people! Especially my friend Daniel at the front desk/Cafe and everyone else too, thank you for your warm & welcoming service. Beautiful rooms and bathroom, everything was perfect there. Highly recommend this awesome hotel. You deserve 10 stars ✨! 😁
R. P.
Generous 3 stars from me and an OK stay for 3 nights.
The bad:
WiFi connection is free but unbearably slow especially for watching online videos. The room had poor sound isolation coming from outside making it possible to hear footsteps from the above floor and other guests/housekeeping especially during the morning. The shower head needs improvement.
The good:
Location is perfect. Walking distance to pretty much everything. The twin single beds were good.
A. M.
I arrived at about 9 in the morning looking for a room to stay in for the next 2 nights. The lady at the desk was able to get me a room, took my bags, and allowed me to check into the room 2 hours before the normal check in time, at one. Reasonably priced for the amazing location. Food downstairs is phenomenal.
J. P.
Stayed at the Pensioners for a business trip. Great location and had my room upgraded upon check-in. Room was basic and clean, although the comfort of the bed was questionable. It's close to the train line so ask for a quieter room! Cheap and cheerful, but a budget hotel masquerading as "boutique"
P. V.
You get what you pay for with a Matchbox room, literally only expect somewhere pleasant to sleep, eat drink and be merry elsewhere, good cleaning service and plenty of storage for up to a 5 to 7 day stay. Shower is quite poor water flow. .
S. F.
Location very central & easy to locate. Rooms are clean and tidy, though some are quite small - ok if out most of the day. Service was lovely, very kind and helpful staff.
S. Y.
The Cafe only (not a stay over guest)
Nice environment, very helpful and friendly staff on 28/6, can't believe there are such people in a big city.
Design of cafe was in detail, setup, display was a great work. Love the animals by windows that attracted me. Sitting inside together with the animals, looking pedestrian rushing by does made my day.
I would give a big thumb up for the idea of call bell !!! love it !!
M. K.
Stayed 2nights with my 2 adult kids, 3 single beds in a 1st floor room facing the main street, sound proofing very good,no noise from the street from train, tram , people, clean& comfortable, cafe downstairs serve good coffee& breakfast. Big bodied people might find the place too compact for comfort. We were out enjoying Melbourne City, its food, took the tram just on the left side,(a real plus here) of the hotel to St Kilda, got to see the famous indigenous Aussie penguins. Overall , lovely stay for me. Would use the hotel again, unless something even better is found.
T. B.
Small and trendy hotel, staff are excellent and housekeeping keep the rooms spotless. It's super close to everything, a five minute walk from Southern Cross, a five minute walk from MCEC, and a tram stop almost at the front door.
The cafe has a good continental or cooked breakfast, but isn't much good for lunch.
C. H.
Edit: hotel rectified the situation and refunded almost all we paid, thanks.
-
very disappointed. Booked 3 rooms for 2-4 nights each end of March to exhibit at a Expo in Melbourne with a special rate. Due to the Coronavirus outbreak, the exhibition organisers had to cancel the exhibition which left us with useless hotel booking. We have asked the hotel 10 days before the booking, just when VIC government announced their gathering ban, to cancel the booking and have asked for a refund. The hotel totally refused any type of refund or credit or anything simply stating these are non-refundable bookings.
In a time of crisis, like the current Coronavirus crisis you can tell the difference between ethical and unethical businesses and Best Western has shown their tru face. No compassion, no flexibility, no solution, just grabbing the money and probably smile for having cash without having to deliver a service.
Corona Virus profiteering I would call this.
Well, we know in any future Expo in Melbourne or for private stays, we will not be staying in this unethical business. Sayonara!
V. S.
Good hotel located in the centre of the city. Near to the tram stop, train station, convention centre and tons of cafes nearby! Room is good and they offer courtyard for people with pets. The only disadvantage of this hotel is the resto. Very small and cramp, and they only offer same food everyday. I booked this hotel for 8 days and eat only bread with choco jam, yogurt, fruits and orange juice everyday because that is the 'only' thing they offer.
A. P.
Convenient location near Southern Cross station. Room was small because of the nature of the heritage building but has been thoughtfully designed to take best advantage of the space. Staff were friendly and helpful and we had a tasty meal in the restaurant.
J. B.
Double room is modern, nice bed, good tv with shitload of channels. large desk. Room is average sized. Bathroom small but has everything you need. Good hot shower, modern fittings etc very nice soap shampoo conditioner and body scrub. Kettle, tea coffee etc as you would expect. Iron and board. Location is very central doesnt get much better. Profesional service.
Lift is a bit slow
Very reasonably priced. All up quite a good experience
R. B.
Great spot. Close to everything I need and a couple of minutes from Southern Cross station. It's an older style hotel but renovated and tried really hard. Staff are fine. Tariff reasonable. ALways happy to stay here.
G. L.
Central location was nice. Room is modern and small. Loved the terrace. No workout area. Also had a terrible first night due to the people next door. Had to lodge a couple complaints.
T. I.
great location hotel with clean rooms and reasonable price. make sure book your room type suitable for the number of people travelling with you as most room are not very big.
D. K.
The hotel is well placed if attending events at the exhibition centre or city. It is a small boutique place to stay with an eclectic array of rooms. The staff are very kind and helpful. We parked at a nearby parking facility across the road.
J. W.
Nine of us stayed there and everyone enjoyed the experience. So handy to everything.
Staff were all very friendly and helpful and the brekkies were fresh and well priced. Happy hour was well frequented by us as well and we would definitely stay there again.
A. M.
Apart from being in the centre of the city there are not many USPs to this place. I can compare my experience staying at Quest, Mont Albert so the amenities missing here include: free washing machine, microwave in the room, free movies in TV (yes! Quest has a Netflix sort of collection of movies inbuilt). All this at the same price, since this is tennis season so the prices are high in the city. So choose as per your preference.
I. L.
The rooms are clean and nicely presented. Convenient location. The amenities are basic. The reception staff are very helpful. The free wifi is very slow though
A. T.
Disappointment, dolls house size rooms. Microscopic size bathrooms. Any oversized person may get into the shower cubicle, but unable to apply soap etc.
Do not stretch arms upon getting up, you may break your knuckles.
Friendly helpful staff
G. J.
Centrally locates hotel close to Southern Cross, Southbank and Collins Street.
Courtyard room was a good size and had all the usual hotel room bits, iron, kettle, fridge etc.
courtyard was a nice space. Don’t expect a sunny area as walls around it very high, although that also cuts the noise from the street
Comfy bed, decent shower.
Walls were a bit tatty and needed a paint.
Staff at check in friendly.
Parking is available around the corner. About three mins walk.
T. S.
Stayed in shoebox room. Despite the name, it's roomy enough for one or two people. Great location, but the shower could do with a proper clean

*** LOCAL GUIDE, WHO SMASHES REVIEWS AND DOESN'T HOLD BACK THE TRUTH! ***
Yes there is two sides to every story but that's the fact of life, why not trust a local guide who has been around the block more than once with companies, we don't review a business before we know the basics. - Wish we could reply to some of these reviews.
Yes a shoebox is a small room but it's ample for the night hell I have spent four days in one and as a photographer and media professional we have a lot of equipment but I still manage to get the job done within the budget and within the target and that's a simple fact of life. Matchbox's are smaller than that's a fact. Motel is well maintained and is a BUDGET so you get what you pay for in your own mind, look if you want to whinge about the 79 - 100 a night for a matchbox, spend $60 - 75.00 a night in Preston on Bell Street, rooms are bigger but they are RAN DOWN.
These rooms are perfectly fine for the night, never even had a uncomfortable bed here and that's a fact, if you want uncomfortable beds, email me and I will tell you where to go.
Given the establishment there's not a lot of noise from the other residences in the motel and the motel maintains to be a quiet motel even of the nights on major weekends such as P!NK. Yes we stayed here during P!NK.
The guys here have a 11am checkout which is ACE for us regional travellers, who need that extra margin of time and that's a fact. The staff have no problems sorting stuff out for you or with you extending your booking via a booking agent and trying to keep you in the same room and that's a simple fact of life here.
Reception are gems, Dave is awesome and friendly from the night crew always happy to help you out when he can on the night shift, it's no night shift with Luke Bona, on triple M but it's still a night shift. Joanne, Joanna, Arianna and the whole reception team is more than willing to sort stuff out for you at a drop of a hat without any issues and are pleasant when checking they remember your name and make it a simple task to maintain a conversation with you. :)
We'll see you next time - Nathan H from Rough Draft Echuca.
J. L.
Room was clean and comfortable but rather small. Good for a one night stay but would likely be uncomfortable for longer. Very nice shower.
M. R.
Great location however I was not impressed by the five cockroaches I killed and what I can only describe as a 'sex hand print' on the backing board of the bed I was sleeping in. I think there is some issues with cleaning the room. Additionally, all the TV channels did not work and the fridge either did not work or was faulty. My complaint in the morning was only met with a "Sorry", but no further action. Really disappointed and i will find alternative accommodation next time.

We had a fabulous stay. Friendly informative staff, comfortable neat rooms and a great central location. Checking in and out was quick and easy. We will be back.
W. H.
Great room, staff and location. Small but adequate room with comfy bed. Friendly staff and a great cafe on site. Would stay there again.
F. B.
Stayed in little downstairs room with its own outside garden. Very wee, but cute. Had cheese platter and wine outside before venturing out to the laneways. Central to everything! very helpful staff.
S. D.
The hotel was very accessible to all major attractions either by walking or via public transport. The rooms, while small, had everything one could want. There are no amenities, but there's an entire city outside to explore.
J. K.
A good cheap place to stay if you're attending an event at the convention center. My room faced a train track, but the noise wasn't too bad. Wi-Fi is slow and access a little annoying: each code they give you works for two devices and two days, so you might as well ask for a second code right away.
E. T.
Love this hotel! Good location not far from Flinders Street or Southern Cross. Has a rooftop place and I fell inlove with it. The rooms are very neat and tidy and I loved the bathroom. Definitely worth the money. I am coming back to this hotel
M. C.
Wonderful hotel and staff! After handling singing in issues with a breeze, I was also told that there was a free upgrade for me! Wonderful time staying here, highly recommended. And Wi-Fi free of charge!
B. B.
Great location with basic modern rooms. Small bathroom reasonably priced. Close to CBD & public transport. The cafe is really good. Friendly helpful staff.
S. “. L.
It was really convenient after a weekend away attending a seminar I needed a nights accommodation ready to fly back to Hobart so the room was fab after along day learning. Definitely recommended
C. S.
Small and comfy but i prefer white painted walls as to beige. This place have warm and a homie feel to it. The breakfast was small but really great! I would go back just for the breakfast.
M. G.
I got a weekend matchbox room for PAX Aus. It's perfect as I'm spending all my time out and sleeping there. The room is well kept, clean and tidy. The staff are wonderful. Not a single comaint! Recommended for sure!!!
A. H.
I stayed by myself for 3 nights in the shoebox room. It was perfect for me. Exceptionally clean, updated rooms and bathroom, and a very comfy double bed. Would definitely stay again 😊
A. H.
It's an old building, but it's renovated and well maintained. The place was clean and comfortable and staff were outstanding. It was everything I needed and nothing I didn't.
a. d.
Friendly and inviting staff whom were very accommodating to making our stay a memorable one. Rooms were well equipped however bathrooms were very small.
G. C.
Nice accommodation. Well decorated. You will find a room the size you need. Friendly staff. Excellent location.
R. M.
Great gem of a Hotel in such a central transit location in Melbourne. Love this place!!! Staff amazing, rooms quirky, yet superbly comfortable. Rooftop bbq and terrace amazing to watch the sunset with a few bevies.👍
H. L.
Hotel is on a good location. Room was nice, big and clean. Only issue was shower was very small. Overall its was good experience.
T. H.
Good value for money hotel. Very good location in the free team zone. Cafe is beautiful. The rooms are clean but small and the bathrooms are tiny.
S. B.
Great and central place to stay. Little resturant is also good. Room is small but has everything you need. Very comfortable and and a comfy bed.
M. O.
Good room, friendly staff. BUT in the middle of the night we had drunks knocking on our door trying to get in and in the morning there was a lot of noise from the water pipes when everyone had showers around us.
O. R.
The room was so small that I couldn't get my (regular sized) suitcase and my walker inside without having to climb over things, hurting myself in the process. The staff and location are great.
A. H.
I was visiting a friend at the Pension. The rooms were smaller than I had expected, but for the price point it makes sense. I'm doing an Airbnb out in Carlton, so the value and trade of location (10 min tram to CBD for me vs being in CBD) vs personal space is justified I guess. $60 for a master bed and bath in Carlton vs a room and bath half the size for 100 on the edge of CBD.
J. M.
For 96 bucks it was great value. Perfect location right next to Spencer at station. Easy check in and out. Huge bed. Great sleep. Will stay again.
D. D.
A cosy hotel in the CBD with compact rooms, plus some larger ones. There are individual courtyards for ground floor rooms, plus a rooftop area and a great restaurant at the front. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The Pensione is just a short walk from Southern Cross station and the SkyBus from the airport.
D. T.
Hotel location is on the edge of the CBD towards Docklands. It's well situated as a 15 minute walk to Etihad Stadium or 15 minute walk back towards the the main shopping district. CBD purgatory but the best of both worlds if you don't mind a walk but trams are plentiful in this area as it's close to Southern Cross train station. And it's in the free fare tram zone so yay.
Hotel staff are organised and check in is easy. Dual lift to service 3 floors and there are stairs. Rooms are compact but all the essentials are there including mini fridge, iron and hairdryer. You can upgrade to larger rooms with a full working space desk.
The downstairs café offers breakfast and they hussle well despite being quite busy. Chose from continental buffet or a la cart.
Free wi-fi is a bit of a hit and miss as the service has been unreliable with average speed. Lift is a little slow so I often take the stairs. The doors seem a little thin to block out noise but I've slept without interruption during my stay.
I've chosen this venue twice as it's been the cheapest in the CBD Docklands area so it's been great value.
E. M.
It was clean and the bed was comfortable. However the bathroom is made for tiny people and the lift was a bit dangerous, the door kept closing quite roughly on people.
L. W.
Great service, very clean, really good food and great value for such a nice room 🌟 only problem I had was there's only one washing machine and dryer available to guests but it's close enough to laundromats that it wasn't a major issue.
c. s.
Cheap, immaculate room, better than expected. The front desk attendants were more than helpful, cheerful and made it way more comfortable. Thanks guys!
R. R.
Clean and tidy. Close to city center. Few minutes walk to nice restaurants and dfo outlet shopping center. A bit small room but very quiet and comfortable. Stayed there for 5 nights during Cisco Live! Event which was in Melbourne Exhibition center 10 minutes walk. Also the location is quite handy as you can grab tram to go anywhere from there. Commuting within the city is free of charge.
S. M.
Great location a couple of blocks from Southern cross station and a short walk from the convention center. Rooms are small but well appointed. Would definitely stay again.
L. D.
Very handy location to southern cross station. Easy access to trams. Some good food spots within walking distance
R. M.
Best value spot in the city, close to Crown and Southern Cross station. Great breakfast and coffee cafe downstairs, 24hr reception and very clean rooms.
D.
Staff are extremely friendly and welcoming. The rooms while small have everything you need, and the beds are very comfortable too.
V. P.
Its ok for a short stay at a reasonable cost. But when visiting Melbourne, be sure to check the weather. It was quite cold during June. This hotel is in the heart of the city and you can take the tram ride in any direction. I would recommend the free around the city tram ride. You can get on and off from this tram just meters away from the hotel.
G. D.
Stayed here overnight for a bucks party. Rooms were really clean and well presented. Literally the best bed ive ever slept in. So comfortable.
J. L.
Room was nice size but the bathroom is barely big enough for a normal 6ft 200lb person
D. M.
I am staying in the shoebox and yes it's tiny but the room itself is well kept and pretty modern. Good for the price
M. R.
Another happy customer. Small room but has what's required. Courtyard was nice and a blessing for those who still smoke cigarettes.
T. D. K. Y.
This is absolutely a nice place to check in especially when you have a meeting in the convention centre I was your 11 months ago it’s been my favourite I arrive before 10 o’clock in the morning they allowed me to check in the room is green the funder come the lady all are very nice The passionate about their work 24 hours this is really value for money if you’re single traveller or a couple this is one of the best place close to everything I highly recommend for solo business traveller or even budget travellers
N.
At very good location, very small place with small Rooms. Not my first choice, booked very last minute. Due to location otherwise..
K. M.
Came into Melbourne to hangout with friends and I've been so pleased with this hotel. The staff are so professional, the rooms are clean and well appointed and the location second to none. With its affordable prices this is a must visit while in Melbourne
L. N.
Spent 4 nights at pensione hotel last month. Payed for small room but everything you need in it. Extremely clean. Will book this hotel next time I visit Melbourne
E. C.
I'm incredible grateful to Kelly on reception and the Pensione Hotel for providing quality last minute accommodation at a very reasonable price - hassle free and allowing me to keep my dog. This is the best budget hotel
H. O.
Although the rooms are small I knew that when I went there so don't mind. The beds are so comfortable and the staff are insanely friendly and helpful.
S. J.
Room 2 was the Best Room shower was Bigger than the Shoebox Room very Comfortable Over the Road from Southern Cross Station
P. W.
Train is loud if light sleeper. Also avoid ground floor as close to 24hr reception - despite this having the corporate rooms?
C. M.
Great friendly staff. Love the renovations they have done. Great location, recommend to all my friends to stay here! Easy to get to and access is great.
K. H.
Honest hotel, we got the shoebox room and was quite clean. Just a bit small bathroom. Nice stay.
V. D.
Room is good but considering bathroom it's too small for average person to use
J. R.
Great quality for the price!!! Smalls rooms though, but everything looks impecable. The staff is amazing as well
W. M.
Good and clean as you would expect however I was woken up by housekeeping when I had the do not disturb thing on the door (I was still trying to get over some serious jetlag so this wasn't ideal)
D. T.
Place was OK. Bathroom so small I had to turn sideways to get through shower door into shower! Location great
D. T.
Look, it’s ok for the budget traveller and if your under 6ft. The bathroom/shower is small and there’s ducking and sideways walking to get into the shower.
B. Y.
Rooms are small but very nice to stay in. Well furnished and comfortable. Would definitely stay again.
K. S.
Good room, lovely staff. Small bathroom and toilet didn't give much privacy
S. D.
We liked this hotel, it close to the station and Skybus stop. Clean, big room but small bathroom
J. T. P.
Pensione Hotel
I had some business acquaintances put up in the Pensione Hotel in Spencer Street in September 2012. The booking and payment was a breeze. My associates, being from overseas, found the multi-lingual abilities of the reception staff most welcome as they also afforded them the appropriate cultural courtesy when we arrived from the airport.
I wish to offer this testimonial in support of the Pensione’s wonderful reception staff and the quality of their Studio Apartments.

Well appointed clean room. Shower stall was a little cramped, but otherwise everything else was good. Great friendly staff.
E. M.
This place is ideally located at the Spencer. The rooms are small and the toilets are tiny. Hardly any space. The price is comapritively less
A. H.
Lovely cute hotel which was affordable and very good location! Staff were very attentive and friendly. Will come back again when I come back to Melbourne for another visit!
G. R.
No complaints because of the price. Probably not the place for you if you're a rotund gentleman as the doorway for the shower is about 30cm wide.
C. V.
Pretty good. Rooms are a little old but still comfortable. Great staff
A. C.
Rooms is quite small, especially the bathroom, however the staff, service and location is good
Z. A. M.
Good location. Food is always available near you
W. T.
Reception staff are lovely and answered all my questions. The breakfast was amazing. The coffee is up there with the best in Melbourne.
I. I.
They are wonderful and professional. Had a mix up with the rooms initially (my own fault) but they sorted it out without any worries.
P. M.
Room was a bit small but reflected in the price. Staff were great amd very helpful and accommodating.
R. M.
Good hotel, cheap and liked the free coffee. But why do they need to keep the deposit for a few working days?
D. W.
Very clean .helpful staff we did find it a bit small but we knew that and we had the court yard .we enjoyed our 4 night stay.
R. A.
Excellent location!!!!. Rooms are relatively small but compare to the price you really can't complain much.
D. M.
Great location and price though rooms are small and bathroom is tiny. Very quiet as well.
A. P.
