c. t.Loved my stay here. The staff were lovely and polite and did whatever they could to make sure you enjoyed your stay. The location was prime, it was a five minute walk to some of the best cafes, shops and bars in Melbourne and public transport was at my doorstep. The rooms were comfortable and clean. As a solo traveller I felt safe in the shared dorms and met some great new friends. Overall I would say this is one of the best hostels I’ve stayed in!
J. R.I stayed as a solo traveller in the female dorm and I couldn't recommend this place anymore! Great staff - Max is super welcoming and good fun, makes you feel at home!
New management took over in August and the place has recently been renovated so it feels very new, and is incredibly clean. The beds all have plug sockets and a reading light. The female dorm includes a hair dryer and straighteners which is such a great touch.
Really close to the CBD, Carlton Gardens and a stones throw from loads of great bars and restaurants in Fitzroy. Also loads of great transport links on the door step.
The kitchen is clean, and the hostel runs a number of free events through the week which is great for meeting other travellers. It's a really inclusive place with no cliques.
There's also a bar directly next door.
H. M.Loved my stay here! The Staff are super welcoming and make you feel comfortable when travelling alone. Rooms are clean and great vibes all round. Location was ideal for me as I love somewhere that is close to public transport, cafes & restaurants.
L. K.An excellent two week stay at this beautiful hostel. Spotless and spacious rooms and showers. Comfortable beds and duvets. Friendly, professional and helpful staff -especially Max who went out of his way to help me a few times. A nice mix of short term and long term guests and the space makes it just as easy to socialise as to hang out and chill by yourself with a garden, great kitchen facilities, TV room, reception area and on site bar to choose from. They also organise activities most evenings like pub quizes, sausage sizzles, cheese and wine nights and the location is also perfect. Excellent value for money and I wouldn't stay anywhere else if I go back to Melbourne 😊
J. C.This is a perfect example of how a good hostel should be. Clean rooms, great vibe and super convenient location to the hip bars and hot spots of Melbourne. Will definitely stay again, just wish it could have been longer!
R. K. A.When you book a hostel you know what to expect bunk bed, sharing rooms with a bunch of people from all over the world, shared bathrooms, common kitchen. The bathrooms were clean and maintained, the rooms were alright. The place being a Victorian building wasn’t flash but had lots of character. The people were great and the location was ideal it was on the edge of the free tram corridor so very handy and cheap to get to the city. The bad side was no lift so heavier luggage’s are a struggle to carry especially to the third floor and the place being soo close to the roads and Melbourne teams running late in the night it was a struggle to get a good sleep. It will be handy to have some ear plug for a sound sleep.
M. R.Amazing location. One of the cleanest hostels I've stayed in and everyone there is really nice. If you're in Melbourne in the winter, you can't go wrong here. Only downside when it gets crowded in the summer might be the fact there's not much common place for the amount of guests there
W. C.My husband and I stayed in a private double room with shared bathroom for 5 nights. The room and bathrooms were very clean throughout the stay. The kitchen was well cleaned by staff but it seems the regulars do not keep up with washing their mugs and cutlery in a timely manner; it would be nice if this culture changed. The staff were all very helpful and friendly. The hostel does not allow you to bring in your own alcohol but the attached bar does offer hostel guests decent discounts depending on the day. Finally, they do not mention on their website that they have a WiFi limit of 500mb per day. I find this a bit ridiculous. (They specifically advertise “NEW AND IMPROVED FREE WIFI THROUGHOUT THE HOSTEL”, no mention of a limit.)
S. L.I stayed at The Mansion for a couple of nights and was made to feel welcome by the hospitable staff. The location is unbeatable and the bedroom / bathroom facilities were well maintained and of a high quality. 5 stars for a faultless experience.
T. D.Stayed 4 nights. Room clean. Bedding provided. Warm blankets. Comfy bunk. Bathroom and toilets all very clean. All staff I met were friendly and helpful. Location is perfect - 5 min walk to China town, across the road from Carlton Gardens. Just within the Free Tram Zone. Bar is pretty good. Kitchen looks well-equipped and ordered but I didn't use it.

If you need any help you can talk to any of their staff and they will do their best to help you and there's no bad time. Very clean room, kitchen and bathrooms!! And there's everything you need in there. Had a great time and whenever I go back to Melbourne, I will keep home at the mansion in mind as a place to stay!
C. T.Okay hostel, it just seemed pretty quiet and people weren't doing much compared to a hostel I stayed in Sydney so I moved to a hotel instead. The staff were great though and the facilities were not bad for a hostel. Just a quiet day when I went I guess which was a shame.
C. C.This hostel is an historic place with tiling and ornate ceilings. Here for 5 night stay. My bed bunk in a mixed dorm is comfortable. The floors squeak but you get used to that. The room is vacumed every day and there is under bed storage box and a lockable locker (use own padlock). The showers work well and although there are only two on the ground floor (more upstairs) I didn't have to que. Two changing rooms with toilets which is great. There are places you can go to watch TV or put on a DVD. The kitchen, dining area is small but again seemed to work (just stove tops and a microwave). Free Wifi. There is a cafe and bar adjacent and we get a discount by showing key.
R. C.Home At The Mansion is well situated, being just outside of the CBD and a skip from the Free Tram Zone.
The rooms are well kept and the bathroom / shower areas have always been clean each time I've used them. The kitchen is always lively during regular eating times, but not hindering in trying to prepare a meal. The guests seem to also be quite accommodating so far.
My experience with the staff has also been very positive, with a kudos to C.J. who has gone above and beyond to provide useful information and is generally very outgoing.

D. A.Chill vibes, a "cool" bar, quotations because it's 32 ℃ right now. Rooms have more room than most the hostels I've been at so far in Australia and the prices are competitive. Free WiFi, plenty of showers and of course laundry. It's a nice location with parks next door. I like it and if I return to Melbourne I'll be staying here.

C. R.Amazing environment and staff. The cafe just beside the hostel serves nice food cheap drinks. The only problem is that the floor might be too noisy sometimes given that it is an old building.
T. B.One of my favourite hostels in Australia. Rooms are cleaned every day as are the bathrooms so always clean and tidy. There's a big courtyard area where there are bbqs and people can just sit and relax. Two TV areas with a big collection of dvdd and a playstation. Best thing is the atmosphere - it's really social and there's a lot of long term people there so there's a good group of people to hang out with. Also in a really good location right on the edge of the cbd and really near tram and train stations. They recently opened a bar next door where people staying at the hostel get discounted drinks (still around $6 for a beer/cider though). It's a nice area to sit and chill whether you are drinking or not, and they do food too. But it's annoying because everyone used to be able to drink in the courtyard before a night out and now you're not allowed to bring your own alcohol in. That's the only negative but if you are rich/like posh drinks/don't like drink then you will love it
c. f.Helpful staff. I recommend staying in a 4 bed to avoid the filth the regulars create in the bigger dorm rooms. Cafe/bar has excellent coffee and beer.
