Fantastic tour!!! would recommend, the tour guide was knowledgable and approachable, plus he added humour into the guide. Amazing
K. R.
it's in a great location with a short walk to restaurants, bars and shops. staying in the prison too is also a novelty on it's own. we stayed in a private room with its own bathroom which is not the original prison but comfortable. there was a double bed plus bunk beds so would be really great value if you had a group of four. things that could better is that there are no toiletries supplied in the bathrooms. at least having soap would have been good. reception doesn't open until 10am which is the checkout time, so it would have been good to have been told that as we wanted to leave earlier.
G. L.
Great place to stay for exploring Freo! We stayed in a double room with have been built just behind the cells but still a great experience! Not many people can say they had a great stay in a prison! Nice big kitchen and garden areas, definitely recommend
L. J.
What a quirky, interesting, cool place to stay. Thoroughly enjoyed my stay here. Was peaceful and my room was super warm with the heater on. My experience at a few hostels has been let down back lack of warmth, but I guarantee the heating in the rooms works. Showers get super hot and kitchen has lots of room and cooking space. There's no cooker but all appliances make cooking possible with gas Hobbs, microwaves and toasty maker, also a coffee machine too. Enjoy your stay! You'll not forget it!
M. R.
Quite good good staff very helpful. As a past resident of the prison I seen more than a visitor than a resident. I would like to have a look in my ol sleeping quarters.
But it was great to see it as a visitor.your staff do well especially The young lady Marnie she was great and I think she is an asset
Hope to be back soon to hopefully have a look in my old cell.
Thankyou.
Max.

When I arrived here, I misunderstood the situation and I texted a too quick judgemental review about staff and customer service.
Later talking straighfully with Melany (staff), I got the situation and she really helped me out to find a bed when there weren't any.
They let me know the situation and how you said: sometimes it's enough to talk to understand. I'll keep in mind this lesson, thankyou
J. W.
No Escape Cafe... ex Quinlans. Okay, but getting up in price. Coffee? No espresso machine yet. Did not try pod coffee. Still pleasant service. Will go again.
I. G.
Great grounds. Felt like a European hostel (an old building converted) not enough cultural hostels like that any more!
J. G.
Awesome history, go on the tours and get to know all the stories
R. S.
Great place to stay especially if your doing the night tour at the prison. Clean good atmosphere was fun staying in a cell different experience. Close to the markets and Cafe strip, pubs etc recommend a look history galore.
r. a.
Amazing tunnel tour very fun great for adventures 😃 tour guide Simon was funny and nice
G. H.
We were given a private tour which was a great experience. The guide had a wealth of knowledge and stories to paint a picture of the changes over time. A few real surprises along the way.
C. T.
Went with the kids and family and was very interesting and informative. But spooky too. Not quite done the night tour or the tunnel tour but will definitely have to go without the kids!
A. C.
Excellent tours. Good value for money. Should keep visitors on the straight and narrow for life :-) :-) :-) .
L. T.
No complaints except it's hard for someone like me for had a huge suitcase to get up the ramps leading up to the accommodation. The facilities are great (hot showers throughout, better than the B & Bs I tried in Freo and Perth), well organised kitchen. People were constantly smoking in the front courtyard though.
M. J.
Only looked at the free exhibitions, but was great to see a museum provide something like that without charging. Will have to return for a proper guided tour at some point.
t. f.
Excellent customer service very informative about our colonial history well worth a look
J. D.
One of 11 Australian world heritage listed sites. Important part of WA history. Tour guide was very knowledgeable.
T. P.
Great friendly staff, very informative and kind. The new art gallery was incredible and the lay out of the museums were incredible, really enjoyed the sensory elements and the untold stories of the prisoners! Can't wait to see more when It is fully open again 😊
M. G.
Really enjoyable experience. Great tour and tour guide. Has a lot of history. Great displays and staff is very friendly. Loved it
C. D.
Was pretty cool to hear all the history and see the inside and out of such an old prison
J. M.
I was expecting more from the Torchlight tour; it certainly wasn't bad, the guide knew his information and told stories well, however, I guess I'd made the assumption that there would be more specific ghost stories and convict stories, etc. Our guide focused more on prison times of 60s and 70s, and ghost stories as such were minimal. So whilst still interesting, potential "scares" were quickly interrupted by other groups passing by and therefore the scene just wasn't set up well enough to make you feel any heeby jeebies at all, which is kind of the point when choosing to visit a convict built prison, at night, in the dark, with nothing but a torch to light your way.....
D. J.
We took the behind the bars tour and really enjoyed seeing and learning about the prison. For us the 1.5 hour tour was just long enough. Our guide, Steve did an excellent job and kept it very entertaining! We would recommend a visit. We ordered our tour tickets over the phone a couple of days before and picked them up in the gift shop- very easy!
S. T.
Stayed with my 2 girls age 6 and 7 is was a lovely room and was safe and secure only 8 minutes to the shops and time zone xx girls won’t stop talkin about how cool and awesome it was xx the staff was great Craig was amazing xx thank u will stay again xx please go will be so good xx
B. G.
Did this over 20 years ago and was hoping to pass on the same fond memories to the kids. Definitely lived up to my expectations and the kids had a great time. Did the Colonial tour followed by the Behind The Bars tour and both were great for the different information learnt.
Both tour guides were very knowledgeable and had a good amount humour thrown in with the facts. Would like to come back to do the other tours one day.
Definitely recommend.
S. F.
Truly enjoyed this tour, entertaining, scary, a little sad to know how harsh it was for the prisoners but relieved that no prisoners will be treated as bad as they did in the 18th,19th century....everyone should experience this tour
p. s.
Tour guy was fantastic. He answered all our questions. Everyone who worked there was really nice. And it was so interesting. Will be going back. To do other tours.
T. P.
Outdoor movies are setup quite well with rugs down the front followed by low chairs then high chair sitters. Viewing angle is good and the acoustics are great inside the walls.
C. L.
We did the Behind Bars tour. Only $22 and goes for over an hour. Our guide was Ken and he did a really good job. Very informative with a good voice that carried well. Well worth a look. They have 3 tours on offer.
J. V.
Fremantle prison tour is worth doing. Plenty of tours on offer. Plenty to see and be amazed about how prisoners were treated in the past and now.
K. W.
Brilliant! Loved it and the tour guide was local with a huge amount of knowledge to share. Great experience, highly recommend
H. B.
Even though this is somewhat of a macabre place to visit, me and my family thought it was really good and would highly recommend you to visit. I found it to be very well run. The team there hold about 4 different types of tours. We chose the tour that meant we didn't have to wait too long from arriving there I think it was the modern history one. The tour lasted about an hour and a half. I thought the family ticket price was really good value for money. My whole family thought the tour was great. We found the tour guide to be engaging and really brought the stories to life. Considering my kids are aged between 10 & 16 that's pretty amazing. I believe they also use some of the property as a youth hostel. But we didn't see that so I can't comment on that......
J. L.
Just watched Escape from Alcatraz at the outdoor prison Cinema. Great venue and surrounds. Would love to do the prison tour but need to book as very popular.
A. B.
Fun fun fun fun. I did the tunnel tour and it was fantastic. Our guide was very friendly and looked after us very well. Security is the first priority. It might be too pricy but at the end of the tour you can justify that
B. C.
Great place! Well worth a visit, I have done the tunnel tour and the night prison tour, both great and highly recommend! The guide, Ian, on the night tour was awesome, he was super accommodating to my little god son (7yo) who got (surprisingly) very scared on the tour, he helped calm his nerves without spoiling things for everyone else, really professional :) nothing like the tunnel tour, so cool!
K. B.
Worth a visit for tourists and locals alike. A very informative and knowledgeable guide made for an extremely interesting visit. To see how prisoners were treated and learn about the history of the building and its environs was a highlight for me to freo.
D. P.
James our tour guide was full of knowledge about Fremantle prison and had a good sense of humour too. It was worth the money.
A. D.
Taken the torchlight tour twice! Amazing experience each time!! Highly recommend, but I don't recommend bringing small kids on the "scarier" tours as it can be a bit much for them
A. L.
Fremantle prison tours specifically "behind bars" and "true crime" were fantastic. Excellent and knowledgeable tour guides, plenty of opportunities for questions. Cafe was fantastic and reasonably priced, good assortment of souvenirs from the gift shop. Tours are very reasonably priced. Would not recommend for kids under 16 due to the graphic nature of the stories on the tours.
L. P.
I love this place as the history of it is incredible. Beautiful buildings built by convicts, now that is definitely hard labour but they did a fantastic job.
A. C.
My family and i did the torchlight tour. It was so much fun. Our guide was great, and made the tour interesting, and the actors were amazing. The gift shop is reasonably priced, and the staff were wonderful.
P. D.
The tours are excellent. We've been on all of them, and we still keep going. There's always something going on. I absolutely love the place. Of course they let you out at the end of your sentence ummm I mean tour.😂🤣
S. A.
Great place to visit, we only had time to do one tour, but would loved to have done the few different ones they had there. Our tour guide Debbie was most entertaining with stories of prisoners from the Convict times. Well worth a visit whilst in Fremantle!
M. T.
Everything was perfect, I mean the cleanliness of bedroom and common rooms, originality of the place. However, when we arrived by night no one asked us if we had a car and if we needed a parking space, so we parked (but it's not free) and we had fine !! It's really a point to improve! For the next customers, think to propose !
T. W.
Great tours with good guides tho larger group on second tour made it a little less interactive so would recommend going early. With true crime probably been the most interesting but see the least of the actual prison.
F. S.
Awesome , Eerie and possibly sad. We stayed in room with own bathroom facilities. They are new and very clean. We spent alot of time reading the stories posted around the prison. Location handy to Perth Markets. We had parking for our rental car. The breakfast included was tea, coffee, toasts with spreads enough to get the day started. Friendly, helpful staff. Definitely would go back to stay.
K. l.
We took the tunnel tour and it is definitely worth your money. We got an entertaining tour guide, forgot her name, she had black hair and a sense of humour. She showed us the prison and gaves us an entertaining and gruesome history of the prison.
The tunnels were safe and adventurous and the boat ride underground was wildly romantic and creepy at the same time.
Worth visiting if you're in Fremantle. The place is more focused on preserving and maintaining its heritage and history. And definitely less on tourism, ironically enough.
But it makes you want to do the tour to simply put your money into preserving the site.
It also gave you a sense of gratefulness to the prisoners.
If you wanna see why, head out to the Fremantle prison to find out why. :)
P. T.
They let me out!
Fascinating accompanied your. It must have been terrible to have been incarcerated and the prison operated until the 1980s but it was interesting to visit and learn about the prison.
We only had the short tour ..but you could easily spend a whole day there. There are subterranean canals to visit which, had I have had more time I would definitely visit this feature.
Do go, but be interested not depressed. It's history you can see!
V. A.
Ok but out of the way.
Cool hostel but wasn’t taken by the vibe and the location is really not ideal compared to other backpackers.
However extremely interesting story and the building itself is obviously unique. Love that they have so many facts on the walls, had a great time reading them!
R. P.
What could have been a very interesring and educational tour was sadly let down due to the fact the guide was rather obnoxious to be lead by.
He was very hard to understand and at times made very unusual comments to members of the tour.
Despite this the venue itself is very good at showing you the history of the prison.
Worth visiting if your in the area but don't go out of your way to visit.
S. D.
Did the convict tour with a large group of about 20 people, had a great tour guide who was happy to answer all questions! Learnt alot here and found it very interesting, would love to go back in the future to do a night ghost tour.
R. N.
Solid stay. Walking distance to Fremantle central and the markets. Only issues would be the slight lack of amenities (only 4 toilets and 3 showers for the whole hostel)
E. C.
Our group thoroughly enjoyed the tunnel tour at Fremantle Prison. Our tour guide, Simon, had plenty of local historical knowledge to share with us along with some dad jokes to keep us entertained. Whether you are a tourist or a local, this tour is a good experience.
S. B.
The night tour was very impressive. Just the right amount of practical scares and the guide kept the educational part interesting too
E. R.
If you want to know more about how Australia was populated, this would give you a start in understanding it. There various tours to choose from. We chose the basic one which gave a very good overview with 1 hrs 15 minutes for $22 per person. 👍👍👍
J. h.
Very interesting experience overall i think that the freshwater tunnel tour was the best, But be warned you have to climb up and down on ladders it also can be a bit cramped down there. We had a very professional guide and the tour couldn't run without him.
S. T. W.
Culturally rich location, worth going to gain an understanding how Australia’s early years. The tour guides are not only well-verses in Australia’s past, but also incredibly friendly and witty! Quite a variety of tours to choose from. Student rates are available too.
J. P.
Was there for work for 10 days. The place was great, and the staff really helped me. I had to travel around WA quite a bit, and they accommodated my travel schedule. I was missing crucial equipment for work, and they let me use their address to order it by mail-- a lifesaver for which I am very grateful!! The massive walls made my room a quiet sanctuary and I got a hell of a lot of work done. Fremantle was very nice, with plenty of good places to eat nearby. Getting in and out of the hostel area by car was easy. A very productive and pleasant trip-- thanks guys!
B. V.
This is a great tourist place. Worth a visit. I took my in laws there and they had a lovely time. The tour however was upset by some children running around and being loud which was unpleasant. We recommended that there should be a minimum age group that can attend the prison tours.
L. L.
Great place to visit. Loads of different types of tours available to take. Most of the tour guides are former guards so will tell you bit more then your normal tours. Guides will take any type of questions in relation to the prison. Gift shop on site.
R. S.
A large prison where you need to book one of 4 tours of about 1.5 hour. We (teenager + adult) did one tour and decided to come back for the Torchlight Tour at night (booking essentially), which was GREAT. Tour guides are super funny as well. Dont forget to visit the little museum for some prison art.
J. W.
Interesting place to visit. We had a guided tour which I found useful to understand the history of the prison. It was an eye opening awareness of to the lives of the inmates who lived there and play built the prison. Good day out. Is suitable for children.
M. I.
They have great choices for tours. We did the Behind Bars tour and it was a great walk around of both the men's areas and the woman's building. The guide was passionate about the prison and was very genuine and knowledgeable.
M. M.
A great historical landmark of significant social importance. A very reasonable charge for non-concessed admittantce especially as this is a World heritage site.
There are various tours available. I took the "behind bars" tour which takes approximately 1 hr 15 mins.
The guides are very knowlegable and on our tour were able to answer every question. With regular tours, the group numbers are small and there's plenty of time given to look around and absorb the atmosphere. The prison does have an atmosphere too! Not entirely surprising when you consider events here such as prison riots, hunger strikes and hangings. I thoroughly recommend a visit. The site is very close to the city centre, 5 mins walk from the main info centre. There are toilets on site and a souvenir shop. There is also a cafe on site.
Q. S.
Get experience, the tour was great
D. W.
We did the behind bars tour which was incredible. The fact that the prison is pretty much as it was when it closed in 1991 and the tour guide (we think) was an ex prison guard made the visit so very real. So easy to imagine what it would be like to do time in prison.
A must see if you visit Fremantle!
D. H.
This is a must see venue, whether you are, as most visitors are, a tourist or you are a local. It encapsulates so much of S.W. Australia's fascinating history from its very beginnings to late 20th Century. Allow yourself a few hours and take in at least two of the available tours that are each guided by knowledgeable and excellent, good humoured guides.
Highly recommended.
N. P. (.
If you're in Fremantle, you must go on a tour or two at the prison! We did the tunnel tour and regular moden day tour. I would have loved to have done the night time tour by torch light, but they only run them on Wednesday and Friday evenings which didn't suit out schedule. The staff are personable, witty and well educated. You can tell they really enjoy their jobs, its noticeable. Prices were quite good, we addes the 2nd tour for $10 each. I'd totally go again
E. L.
Location was well spaced and more than enough rooms for our large number and activities. The tour itself was shorter than another one I've been on in the past, but our tour guide made it entertaining for us and was very informative.
M. B.
So cool to stay in a place full of history, by the way, it’s not everyday you get the chance to sleep in a prison without actually being arrested or convicted for a crime. :) the place was well kept and kitchen was soooo organised and clean at all times. Everyone seems to have a common sense that others will be using after them and keep it clean. Also we saw a few families with kids as well. Great environment. Loved it!
D. B.
Have been wanting to do the tour for years
Just did the convict tour and was so good our tour lady was so good
We will be going back after Christmas to do the other tour 👍👍
D. M.
Great tour. guides were very knowledgeable chilling and humbling place
h. f.
UNESCO world heritage site. Torch tour is the best way to discover the prison . The history of the prison is very old. The convicts where the first person to be put in . There are 4 blocks .There is a separate division for women as well with the walls built up so high . Historical place to visit. This should be one of the places in your bucket list to visit in Perth .
T. H.
Fantastic part of Fremantle History . Hadn't been to do a prison tour for over 20 years . Booked the true crimes tour and could not beleive how much we enjoyed it . We booked another tour and then another tour . Cant wait to do the tunnels . Highly recomend this to everybody
B. M.
World heritage site, built by convicts. They offer different tour packages to see around the prison. A guide is always accompanied with every group and your experience is purely based on the guide.
J. D.
Unmissable experience! Great staff and tour guides. I recommend the "Doing Time" tour of the inside of the prison before the other tour on the outside. The museums and art gallery are treasure trove a of interesting information.
A. B.
Wow this place is great! 4 different tours, so interesting! Missed out on the underground tour, definitely doing it next time we're there .
G. M.
Underground and torch tours amazing
But Steven I think who did other tours was bad. Knew his info but no dleivey made no eye contact or personal interaction light jokes etc. Gold guides yes
E. C.
Went on the night tour. Had a great comedic guide. Got to whip my partner with cat o’ nine tails so that was great lol was interesting and a little spooky (which was cool)
c. z. t.
This place is amazing although it states that it is a 3 star hostel. I find the place very clean and tidy when I first arrived and it felt welcoming. The staff were friendly when I was checking in and explained to me where my room was and where the facilities were. There are many types of rooms here as you can choose to sleep in the same room with other tourist or you can have a room to yourself but prices of the rooms are different. If you're uncomfortable being in the same room with others you can choose to have your own room. The rooms here also do not have WiFi, however they have common spaces which have free WiFi for everyone to use, so if you want to browse the Internet you have to go to the common space area. This place also have a kitchen for everyone to use and you can buy your own groceries and cook there which brings convenience as many shops are closed during late afternoon. This place is also a very good location as it is not far from many tourist sites and you can just walk there without the need for public transport. Throughout my stay I feel that this is the place that I would like to come back to again. I highly recommend to stay here.
C. M.
Historical building. Some galleries can enter for free. For tours need to pay accordingly (depends on which tour you want to join). Walking distance to Fremantle Market (yeay!) And lots of parking bay around
I. B. J.
Tours are amazing. Very personal and educational. We ended up going back here on several occasions because the tour guides were amazing. Definitely a must do.
M. A.
Great visit at the Fremantle Prison.
We did the torch tour and our host Christie was amazing! She really made the whole tour very spooky.
We would recommend it to anyone visiting Perth.
R. D.
Excellent tours of the jail. Our guide Sarah was so knowledgeable about the history of the prison and she made it fun and engaging. Definitely a must if you go to Fremantle
D. Y.
Had a great day out on one of the tours. Tour guide was very knowledgeable and made the tour a great experience. A must do if visiting Freo.
M. S.
it's definitely a different experience!
you can tell a lot of effort was put into the little touches and sticking to the theme.
rooms are small and basic (the original cells only have bunk beds, no double)
cool place!
N. J.
I remember a school excursion from primary school many years ago, and everything appears much smaller. I'm now 195cm tall though, which makes the doorways look so much smaller, and ducking under them to get to the toilets is a lot further down. As it was a function, we didn't do the usual tour, so it was a DJ inside one of the cell blocks, a party on the grass outside that cell block, and a visit to the toilets across in another building. So I really can't give an accurate review of what happens there these days.
J. S.
Visit the prison if you want to have a close look into the history of convicts and people who first came to WA from England and the East Coast. The prison has a lot to offer with various tours provided by amazing Guides.
J. G.
Extremely interesting place to visit. Well worth going to. I personally went on two of the tours and plan to go back for more. Loved it.
d. b.
YHA Is in an unusual setting of a former Prison. But I have to admit it works. It is a lovely hostel.
Decent staff who will help anytime.
Exceptionally clean rooms, toilets and showers.
As well as kitchen/dining area
Plenty of cooking/dining area space.
A short distance from supermarket and eateries.
My #1 favourite hostel in Australia..love it and thank you!
D. H.
My husband and I did the night tour and it was amazing. The eerieness of the empty halls sets the mood. The stories the "prison officer" told give you a real feeling of the conditions these prisoners endured. The history of the prison is remarkable.
K. S.
We had a lovely afternoon. We took the Escape tour and a great tour guide ensured a fantastic experience for all. A fun way to learn about the history of WA.
M.
The best hostel you could ever find. The staff is just awesome. They keep everything so clean. There's everything you need, a lot of space, a common space away from the dorms at night, a quiet common area for reading or work, and outside, ping pong table, volleyball net, hamacs, tables... And with that, movie night, free cheese on Fridays and free pancakes on Sundays. Thank you guys for these amazing times!
K. B.
Clean, friendly, open spaces.
Staff and guests are super friendly.
Rooms and amenities are always clean.
Lots of outdoor space to chill out.
Dorm rooms, private rooms and 2 bedroom cottages available. Most affordable place to stay in Fremantle.
K.
Did a short lag, lucky I ate before I went as they did not offer snacks.
Did not get touched on my bottom ether so well done warden team
B. S.
Tours were fantastic. Creative and friendly tour guys. Really educational. Not meant for kids, even the day time tours. Small children were getting a bit scared.
M. C.
A must when visiting Fremantle. Also spooky night tours. When it comes to the place where prisoners were hung just a couple of decades ago, and the yard where they were left to themselves to clear things up, you can really feel what it was like. Imagine also all the hot days over 40 degrees with no Aircon. Many of the prisoners have returned as tourists and also their children and grandchildren!
l. h.
Amazing did 2 tours the pencil art a convict did was truly breathtaking just wow to the convict tour
K. D.
First tour was about the escapes from the prison, and we had Justin as the your guide. Justin was extremely funny and spoke very naturally with us all. Was good at involving the kids as well. Our second guide for the 'general' tour sounded like he was reading from a script. It felt really unnatural and took away from the experience. He really knew his stuff though and still gave us a lot of info to take away.
H. O.
The prision was amazing and so untouched from mordern world. The tour was well paced and had a lot of information. The Guide was really good at keeping the audience engaged and he was pretty hot to.. over all this was a amazing experence and i highly rate it to anyone to do it for all ages.
P. H.
I went on the night tour. It was very enjoyable to see all the historical sights and listen to all the stories. However, I thought they could have had more information. But that could have just been because I was on the night tour.
D. D.
Best tour I've ever had. Guides were incredibly knowledgeable and friendly and fun. Kids even loved it. Highly recommend the Great Escapes tour!
M. M.
I've travelled all throughout Europe, North America, parts of Asia and Africa. In any of those places, never could I say that I've stayed in a prison, let alone inside a World Heritage-listed building. For a hostel to have both of these, is incredibly exceptional. The place has great staff that are committed to welcoming customers, a range of rooms, the place was very clean and comfortable. I stayed in the cheapest dorm which was $29 a night. It seems that most people extend their stay when they rock up here, which is the sign of a great hostel, at least based on my experience. The place was a bit quiet when I was there: it had only just opened its doors, and it was winter. Can recommend.
H. H.
It was a good experience and heard a lot of interesting stories on the tour. Guide was very informative and made the entire tour full of fun.
A. S.
Really fun tour at freo prison! The guide was really nice and knowledgeable. Opted for the caves tour which was surprisingly fun! Would recommend who anyone who is interested and physically fit
L. B.
Highly enjoyable experience. Came with the grandson left supporting the local community.
Fantastic day out.
D. V.
The tours are cheap and packed full of value. to think this prison was operational until 1991 is incredible. there is loads of history contained within th prison that your guides will go through. If you find yourself in Perth, its a must visit for all.
T. C.
This recommendation is for the Fremantle Prison(not for the Fremantle YHA)although the YHA is a great backpacker place to stay, and if you do stay at the YHA,BE sure and book tickets on the Fremantle Prison website and Take the Torchlight Tour,it's an informative and a little creepy walking tour around in the dark night through out the old prison with a Tour guide as they tell the stories and facts about the prison..
Torches are supplied, scary frills are free, the Tour guides humour is priceless..
Had a marvellous time with my 16 yr old daughter..
P. M.
If you haven't been then you now have this to look forward to. There are different tours to choose so there will be one to suit your needs.
J. T.
Must Visit. It's a rare sight to see how an actual prison looks like. Many don't get a opportunity to see one. Great historic sight. Lots of history. Great for adults but not sure about kids.
D. E.
Great location in a historic building. Good amenities (some toilets need TLC)Friendly, helpful staff.Well equipped kitchen for cooking with fridges/freezers available. Lockers in your room but you need own padlock to be really secure. Card entry to the building and rooms. Sheets, pillow and warm "doona" provided. Venez!😊
C. M.
We spent a very interesting 1.5 hours on the tour. The best part of the tour was the excellent guide that we had who play acted the whole time.
T. A.
Place was accommodating, I felt safe, people respected quiet times and the kitchen was really tidy so people obviously respected cleaning up after themselves. There was a range of ages. Seemed to always be enough toilets and showers since I never had to wait or anyone wait for me. The "free breakfast" was about what you'd expect for an Australian backpackers. Toast+spreads, cereal, coffee, tea, and orange juice.they had soy milk 😊.
After the absolutely appalling "handling" of a booking from another backpackers the receptionist managed to get me a bed at 9 at night with no issues and was friendly.
One bone to pick is you really need a mat or something on the ground outside the shower. I tried to clean up with paper towels after I had one but someone could easily fall on their face, seems like a health hazard.
C.
A top tourist destination in Perth, highly recommend taking the tours and exploring the prison. It can get a bit busy and the groups a bit large. Plan time accordingly, I'd recommend considering taking two of the tours on offer.
P. I.
Interesting history with little changed since it's creation in the 19th century. Our tour guide was super nice and knowledgeable.
H. H.
The tour guides are very knowledgeable, and this prison is a huge part of Australian history. Absolutely recommend everyone come here.
M. S.
We did the night tour and Simon was our guide, he was absolutely amazing and made the tour a great experience.
T. M.
Did the convicts tour very interesting plenty off other tours too do gift shop and cafe there too
L. O.
A unique place to stay, it still retains many of the prison features and has displays on the history so worth staying just to look round. Comfy beds with thick mattresses, good spacious kitchen facilities and clean modern bathrooms.

Really interesting place, range of tours to choose from so you can base visit on your preferred interest. Pretty spooky too! Worth a visit.
R. T.
Good place to learn the history of Fremantle prison on it's start up and eventual closure. Free exhibition galley to read up about Australia history tracing back to her origin and roots. Mine "Doing time" tour guide Andrew was informative with a sense of humor giving us a very good run down of the history of the prison and various prominent convicts and crime in Australia.
V. I.
Great place with cool giant games, outdoor games, communal kitchen. Good to stay a couple of days when staying in Fremantle. Very informative and interesting tours within the prison also.
S. C.
Historical place in Fremantle.
They have 3 prisons tour guild trip.
Which will bring you inside.
Try 1 of it is recommended.
D. D.
Stayed here, rooms are Lovely. Friendly staff. Really nothing bad to say,.. except for the fact that the bathroom light turned on when we were sleeping. Bit weird and scary :p but funny now we think about it
B. M.
Great tour covering a lot of Australian history. If you like prison tours, you will love this one. Very well done. Takes about 1 hr 20.
M. R. d. G.
An amazing hostel, everything clean and userfriendly. Super friendly staff, you can ask them almost anything 24h a day. Close to the fremantle markets, close to the free bus that goes to the beach, basically everything within walking distance. And because it's an old prison (but new facilities) it has it's own unique flair.
J. M.
Fremantle prison is very interesting historical place with cool stories. It is a worth a visit there. There is an option to choose between different tours.
L. P.
Interesting place. Would've loved to have done a tour but bad knees can't handle long walks..place is full of intriguing history up on the walls..you could spend a long time reading every thing.
S. M.
Informative tour, gives a good insight into prison life at the time it was operational. Lots of extra trivia from the tour guide who answered all of our weird side-questions. Thanks
J. R.
Fantastic visit, guides are very well informed with some being former prison guards. It's a great historical day out with wide range of yours available.
j. d.
Great place to see . Tour guides were really good.
B. R.
Amazing place lots of history and had a very good tour guide.
Sadly he was retiring but I'm sure the other staffers are just as accommodating.
R. I.
Went to the new movie night at the prison.... FANTASTIC great set up good food and drinks. Really is a great night
c.
Great hostel in a great location! Clean and with all the services you need to have an awesome stay in Fremantle. Amazing staff that makes you feel like home! Thanks for everything!
S. H.
Interesting insight into prison life from when it was built to when it was vacated. We did the short prison tour which was just right without being too long winded as it took 75mins
r. r.
Did the convict and inside bar tour . Must see if you are around Fremantle . A short walking distance from the train station. The prison is one of the biggest still intact in the world (it is today heritage site). Did not do the tunnel visit ,that will be for next visit 😊
A. M.
Awesome place filled with lots of history.
j. t.
Went on ' behind bars ' tour. The guide, Steven, was very informative and bought the prison to life by the way he spoke. Well worth the 21 Australian dollars for the 75 minutes.
M. M.
An interesting tour. Loved our tour guide, terrific job. Thanks
P. D.
A very nice hostel and I'm glad choosing this place because I can learn a bit of Fremantle history and it is very near to the Fremantle Market. This hostel located next to the Fremantle Prison, and it was a female prison some years ago. It has a nice and well equipped kitchen, and the dining room is also good. We also could booked Rottnest Express to go to the Rottnest Island and get a discount. I'm thankful I hadn't booked it online before.
M. F.
Good place to visit when in freo. Interesting tour enjoyed by all
J. B.
Great tour, the guide was funny, knew his stuff and made the experience very interesting.
K. W. (.
Great location for a Fremantle tourist site! Enjoy the history of the place and how the freedom of the people was generated. The torchlight tours was exciting and spooky in the darkness
L. G.
Great place to visit, we had a great tour guide who kept us well informed on the history and what went on where within the walls,
N. J.
A lot better than anticipated! Can't remember our guides name, but she was clearly into the tour and used some drama skills to make it highly enjoyable
J. H.
Pretty cool, a little depressing but overall enjoyed the stories. The guide was... interesting. The art inside made me sad, and the women’s wing was messed up to say the least.
B. L.
We booked one of the newer private rooms with ensuite and our stay was good. Fairly basic accom as expected from a YHA, but comfortable. Really close to everything in Fremantle, and a unique place to stay. Recommended for the budget traveler.
A. B.
Definitely visit. The tour was really good. The knowledge of the guides really made it worth while.
M. J.
Didn't actually stay here but did walk through after a Fremantle Prison tour and wish we'd stayed there even though we had accommodation at a friends... I can guarantee our next visit to Perth will have us booking into this place for a stay for sure!
V.
My son and my husband did tunnel tour they love it. Very helpful tour guider with excellent knowledge.
C. E.
One of the best hostel experiences. The historical site provided an unique atmosphere. Very friendly and helpful staff, too. Love the neat and clean kitchen.
P. B.
Nice to visit... Wouldn't have wanted to stay here. The tours are great and the tour guides really do an amazing job.
A. K.
We did the torchlight tour and had a lovely elderly gentleman guide us. Great staff, great location and great tour. Would recommend for anyone visiting the fremantle area
C. E.
Clean kitchen and bathrooms! Cleaning twice a day- really good.
The room was very small and the spirit in the hostels isn’t that warmly.
I can recommend this hostel just for a few days.
K. G.
A place to check out whenever in WA. Had a great time learning about the history. There are 5 different kind of tours at reasonable prices and there is a package for family.
J. J.
Absolutely brilliant 👌 staff were helpful, place was clean, well situated to walk into town. Very reasonably priced. Lots of history, can't fault it😊🇬🇧
J. C.
Fascinating place to stay! Many of the old cells are converted into bunk rooms. Great facilities and rec room area too. Just wish it was a touch cheaper for a room!
T. m.
One of Fremantle's BEST attractions and a great fun way to learn about the prison and WA's early history. The "Torchlight Tour" is a MUST!! As it's well and entertaingly lead by the tour guides. The Tunnel Tour is a bit more physical, but just so awesome an experience!! Where else would you get to paddle a boat 20m underground? Do yourself favour and explore this gem - I promise, you will NOT be disappointed!! 👍
D. H.
Such an interesting incredible living museum - this prison was only closed in 1993 and had no sanitation - the living conditions were set to punish - the guide who walked us through each area of the prison knew everything there was to know - well worth a visit
M. N. (.
Brilliant place to have a concert and Missy Higgins was truly wonderful.
J. M.
The best few nights I've had in prison! History on (and in!) the walls, hammocks in the garden, good WiFi, cozy living room, clean around, and friendly helpful staff.
A. T.
Excellent....every western Australia should do the tour ....it's our history...
K. B.
Tour was great, not just for me but my 7yo loved it. Will definitely check out the other tours available.
M.
I've been here a few times, and enjoyed the tours they have there. It might be be interesting to everyone but I enjoy this place a lot.
T. K.
Spent a night here, would highly recommend it if you need somewhere to stay in freemantle. While you're there check out the guided tours of the prison.
S. L.
Great staff and very informative
S. N.
The overall check in process was easy. Just didn't like the part we had to wait about 30 minutes there wasn't any staff around. Otherwise, loved my stay. Convenient to travel around
M. H.
First time to jail...... went to see the Perth Knife Show.
The place was awesome! very professional and friendly. Can't wait to do a proper tour.
R. G.
Went to knife show , used public transport for access was easy and good venue.
Afterxshowxwalked to Fremantle Markets before using resin for trip home. Easy accessible venue.
U.
We did the tunnel tour and it was pretty cool. Staff were awesome, extremely friendly and made the tour enjoyable. Would recommend 👍👍👍
L. Y.
Interesting to stay in ex prison. So far it was okay even I was a bit scared after read the announcement that if you see ghosts, please contact the receptionist. But nothing happened. Oh ya free breakfast on sundays
S. M.
What an awesome amazing place to visit. The background on it was so interesting. Loved loved loved it. Tour guide was amazing as well . Definitely well worth it!!!
G. D.
Great place to learn history. Definitely take a tour!!!
J. L.
Stayed here for a night in the Queen Room with ensuite bathroom in September 2017. Cost $94.
Loves:
+ The history of the prison YHA.
+ Comfortable and clean room
+ The dining area and common area, big, well equipped, comfortable.
+ Stone throw away from Fremantle Prison and Fremantle Markets.
Dislikes:
- wifi only available in the common area and dining area. Yet, it was extremely slow.
- the small room and there's no kettle to boil water
- the reception trying to get us to change to a smaller room. Although later we managed to change back to the room we booked for, but kinda feel cheated.
B. E.
Amazing place definitely recommend the night tour
W. J.
Did 2 of the available tours around different parts of the prison. Very interesting and informative. Highly recommended
M.
The staff are friendly
Great location
No toilet paper in room 113 toilet
C. A.
Became a tourist in my own town. Very cool piece of history.
T. A.
Did the behind the bars and the true crimes tours. Both were really good. Learned a lot. Definitely a must see when you visit Freemantle.
B. b.
Great true crime and torchlight tours
J. N.
I find it a travesty that this place only has a 4.4 star rating. The bastard that didn't give it five has ruined their track record worse than Toby did when he called into 3AW with the joke about the worst smelling thing in the whole wide world. They deserve to be put in a hessian sack and chucked off the Great Australian Bight.
S. C.
It was a really interesting tour that took about an hour and a quarter. We took the Behind Bars tour which was excellent. Enjoyable.
B. K.
Unique experience and tour, great insight into the history of the complex. Friendly tour guides and reasonable prices make for a great day out in Fremantle.
Y. O.
We did the tour for one and a half hour and learnt so much about the evolution of the prison and even the city itself. The atmosphere was chilling and authentic as well
D. J.
Absolutely loved the torch light tour and Simon our tour guide was a hoot try and get him if you can
A. T.
Interesting peek into the convict history of Australia, great tours that give you even more stories. Wonderful educational place to visit!
M. R.
Unique atmosphere in the old Fremantle prison. The rooms are old prison cells with bars in front of the windows and there is still some of the original prison interior. The kitchen is very well equipped and there is also a laundry and plenty of space in the common areas.
S. C.
I did the night tour!!! It was sooooooo much fun, if I had more time in Perth I would do a morning tour as well.
D. C.
The Prison is the place to see there is accommodation close by but the tour through this world heritage site should not be missed you can only see it by way of a tour, our tour guide Jim Fisher was a guard when the Gaol was operating so has a great knowledge of what happened her especially the riots when sections were burnt down, if you can get this guide all the better he has a great sense of humor and there is a lot of play acting by the visitors, when in Fremantle don't miss it
M. G.
Went on the tunnel tour with my amazing guide Simon and had a blast learning about the prison and trekking into tunnels. Definitely worth a try
H. T.
The main accommodation is old prison cells which houses the women's prisoners. Really interesting however you have to be interested in that sort of thing. Staying in part of a closed prison is quite wired.
C. K. K.
Bit of history. Variety of tours including a Torchlight tour on the evening that was rebranded from being called a ghost tour. Good experience with fabulous staff!!
R. T.
The host for the tours are amazing. Really bring us into the lives of the prisoners back then. Educational esp for children
P. M.
Unique hostel in a prison! Clean rooms and well equipped kitchen area. Free breakfast and friendly staff. Highly recommended.

An eerie place. Love the history and stories told by the guides who seem knowledgeable of the history of the place. If you want a bit of scary staff Freemantle Prison won't disappoint.
J. P.
Would recommend the night your if your heart is up for it! Fabulous evening and very interesting all the way round the building with lots of features still there.
P. B.
§pent a day here with close friends loved the whole experience of being in a prison. Staff are always obliging and always happy and thrive to give thr best customer service.
S.
lady guide in there made my day. Thank you boss.
Place is magnificient but my sister was bored. Don't go with someone who doesn't appreciate piece of history.
A. S.
A must visit when in Perth. The prison tours are absolutely worth the money and gives a glimpse of the past
J. M.
We went to Fremantle Prison and did a tour! Great experience. Even more fun that you can stay right next door at the YHA!!!
J. D.
Well worth a visit very informative tour guide hard to believe the gaol only closed in 1991.
Z. K.
Had the funniest tour guide Justin, made it the most memorable experience listening to all the escape attempts from the prison. Great afternoon out.

Did 2 of the tours and it was fantastic, both guides were very knowledgeable and fun.
A. J.
Good place, good story. But there isn't that much to see if you are only visiting the free side of the prison
A. W.
Honestly was a great tour. Def over priced but worth doing.
L. G.
This location is something special. Lovely staff, affordable accommodation, nice common areas, big kitchen area. No free parking in the area though.
S. W.
The coolest place to stay in Freo and you don't have to break the law to stay here 😁
L. F.
The tunnels tour is really oustanding. Great staff who are quite knowledgeable. Not many other experiences quite like this.
S. R.
Cheap and cheerful in a very, very unusual location! Only stay if you donct mind weird noises, bumps and the hairs standing on the back of your neck!
D. S.
The night tour was amazing. Just when you settle in expect some surprises.
B. M.
Very interesting and highly recommend the tunnels tour for the little bit of extra money.
m. C.

P. E.
Amazing place, stayed here weeks on end. Perfect location, staff are so nice and it's a very homely feel. I'll be back :)
D. B.
Clean, quiet and peaceful. Short walk to the heart of Freo. Comfy enough. Note: Aircon in ensuite rooms may be too noisy to sleep with on.
L. M.
Australians have been very creative in making us of this old prison. The courtyard is used for concerts; some areas are used as a youth hostel. And of course the tours.
t. f.
