This must be close to the best gelato in Sydney. Super smooth and creamy. All the flavours were distinct and delicious but not overly sweet or overpowering. Tried the ricotta with lemon zest, peanut butter and nectarine. Peanut butter was a standout with a bit of smokiness to it. Highly recommend you give it a try.

Really nice gelato and decent prices!
The store itself is quite small, not really anywhere to sit - but it’s not really necessary anyway! The gelato here is nice and smooth and there are a good range of flavours available too. Service was decent and efficient.
I also liked how there were a lot of options that were non-dairy, including both fruity and non-fruity flavours. You can also have two flavours as one scoop, for $6!! I had the macadamia flavour. It wasn’t overly sweet and it had real macadamia chunks in it!
I also got to taste the pistachio, the gianduja (like Nutella), and the salted caramel. The gianduja was pretty rich, but definitely nice if you like Nutella. The salted caramel flavour was also really good! The pistachio flavour was a bit strong in my opinion - definitely wouldn’t be able to have a whole scoop of it, but it wasn’t bad.
Would definitely come back if I’m in the area :)

Very nice artisan style gelato shop in Newtown that offer a range of gelato from the traditional and classic flavours like Pistachios, Stracciatella, Caramello, nocciola to special flavours like Genmaicha, matcha, hojicha, hot cross bun. The flavours is strong and unique. Love the Caramello, Hojicha, Genmaicha and their special Truffle & Bush honey gelato. Would recommend this place to people for its unique, strong flavors that taste good.

This place is an artisan style ice cream shop offering strong flavors that are intense and unique. I ordered the roasted green tea and pistachio on a cone. The roasted green tea was great however a little too sweet. The pistachio was amazing and had strong nutty flavors. The scoops however are a bit sloppy and dribbles everywhere. I would recommend this place for its unique and strong flavors that taste real.

The BEST gelato - and with all the competition in Newtown that's saying something! Great array of flavours and great variety to cover lots of different dietary needs too. (love the clear cut allergen labelling system!). Everything I've ever tried has been super tasty and I've never once had bad service - the team are always friendly and happy to suggest a flavour pairing. The 2-flavours-in-one-scoop is a great option for those times you don't want a huge serve but simply can't decide! (Or if you're like me and can only physically stomach smaller portions/servings)

I chose the hot cross bun,which has the cinnamon taste, unique icecream taste in my life.

The best gelato place so far in Sydney. Their gelato really reminds me of the one in Italy. Very soft, fluffy and taste very natural. Their fruit base also consist of 60% fruits. Make sure to try the pepe saya butter and the pears flavours. Our favourite for now!

Delicious gelatos! We tried their Gianduja + Pistachio and Nectarine + Raspberry. The nectarine used real fruit chunks, raspberry was so refreshingly tangy, and pistachio was creamy with strong pistachio hit. Our favourite was Gianduja flavour - they say it’s “a bit like Nutella, but better” which we totally agree with.

One of the best ice cream (or should I say gelato?!) I have ever taste. Simply amazing, creamy, few bits of the flavour you took in them, service is quick and friendly staff. I took the single or chocolate and the smoked macadamia and partner took the hazelnuts and "better that Nutella" (very nutty!). You can tell the quality and freshness of the products used. Seriously delicious ice-cream! Have tried the Caramello (Pepe Saya Sea Salt Caramel), Fiordilatte (creamy milk), Stracciatella (milk and dark choc chips), Nocciola (hazelnut) and Burro di Arachidi (peanut butter) - can't fault any of them and will be back to try the rest of the flavours on the menu!

Mapo is a small artisanal and sustainable gelato shop at the Northern end of Newtown towards Sydney University. The fit out is minimalist, with a long bench, plywood clad walls covered in a list of the daily offerings. Gelato flavours made using natural, raw and organic ingredients without artificial additives.
The colours and flavours come from the ingredients used in the gelato. The gelatos are super creamy and really tasty. The quintessential Italian flavour is fior di latte, their creamy milk which they always have, as well as plenty of fruit based (60% fruit) like watermelon, honey dew melon, and plum and their rotating specials. Other flavours include roasted macadamia, caramello, giandujia, matcha, stracciatella and pistachio. They do have some vegan options.
One of my favourites is the Pepe Saya Butter with sea salt caramel and a natural raw honey and sea salt caramel sauce add on.
Be sure to check it out sometime.

The best gelato in the world starts and ends at Mapo Newtown. Every gelato sampled is next level. Their pistachio gelato is made with pistachios sourced from Sicily resulting in a gelato that is as good (if not better) than any I've had in Italy. You won't be dissapointed!

If you are looking a real Italian gelato this is it! All ingredients are natural and can be tasted in every spoon. This is different from Messina as they stick with simple flavours that are made of seasonal. Stracciatella and Nutella are phenomenal. Gelato is very creamy and soft, I loved it so much that I was thinking about getting one more cone after I finished mine!

Sustainability and natural flavours are great things but first and foremost the taste and texture is what makes this such a great place. I had lemon and basil sorbet, which was good. Also, the hazelnut (Nocciola del Piemonte) which tastes beautifully natural. But best of all and most surprising for me was the Motor Oil, a seasonal offering from Young Henry's Hoppy Porter - an intriguing mix of sweetness, maltiness and then the hops start coming through - so good!

The best gelato in Sydney. There, I said it. It somehow manages to be both creamy and light at the same time. The classics are all exceptional - think chocolate, fior di latte, pistachio and salted caramel (with pepe saya butter, mind you). That being said, the seasonal fruit and other flavours are often the stars. You'll see the line down the street, take a photo of the menu and choose while you wait. You won't be disappointed.

Cute lil spot, with the creamiest gelato ive had in a long time! Very good vegan flavours also. Staff are always friendly, patient and worried about customers.
We had an incident where someone rather rough come in, stood right at the doorway holding something (What I assume to be a bottle of liquor) in a brown paper bag, farted rather loudly, yelled/mumbled that there was nothing wrong with standing there when the staff went by to tell him that he can sit at the front on the crates, but not to stand at the doorway where customers were enjoying food. I didn't get a chance to thank the staff member that did this, but thanks!

I love ice cream. Mapo has a unique range of traditional ice cream to die for. They have a large enough range to satisfy without it becoming average. It’s smooth texture and consistency is delightful. Unfortunately I have to try and limit myself to one visit a week (perhaps two). Mapo night has become a fixture on our calendar. I love Mapo.

Gelaterias are a dime a dozen on King Street, but Mapo's fresh and unbelievably creamy flavours are in a class of their own. Their sea salt caramel - made with Pepe Saya butter - is much more refined and nuanced than the equivalent offerings by the other joints down the road. The nutty caramel flavour isn't hard-hitting, and doesn't taste burnt, as is often the case. Rather, it lingers on the palate in a scrumptiously satisfying way. Just try it, and you'll understand.

Portions are quite inconsistent though. There has been a few times recently where a triple scoop servings was so little, it was basically equivalent to the size of a double scoop - not impressed. Incredible! Salted caramel is an absolute winner. Tastes like authentic Italian gelato, with that creamy stretched milk texture that melts in your mouth (and in your cup too haha).
The chocolate one tastes like melted lava cake, and the honeydew melon one is extremely on point (so only get it if you love honeydew haha).
It's gonna be hard for Messina/Cow & Moon etc to keep up with this one!

Hands down most creamy and favoursome gelato in Sydney! This is my absolute favourite gelato place and it caters to vegans too. Honestly, their vegan pistachio and nutella gelato is so good you can't believe it is vegan. I also go for their fruity sorbets which are creamy and fresh. Their milk-based flavours are also to die for as well. I often buy a tub so I can indulge the goodness at home but because I have to store it in the freezer it does not retain the heavenly texture but the delicious flavour is still there. The flavours change on a weekly basis but there is always something for everyone! Keep up the amazing work, I am a big fan!

My favorite is the milk ice cream and Bolivian chocolate. Yesterday there were special flavor - Pandan and Mandarin with Mascorpone and I fell in love instantly. They are now my new love. I couldn't resist and called Mapo this evening to see if Pandan was still available as I was willing to drive there for the fix. Unfortunately it was not!! Bring it back plssss

Its another gelato place. Ice cream is a bit better compared to others in the other shops nearby. Only marginally better but still marginally better. I would go back to them because of that small difference though, but im more of a berry flavored gelato person than a chocolate and dairy flavored gelato.
So if you prefer non fruity gelato, go here since the chocolate and milk ones are really good. if you like fruity flavors then maybe you should go somewhere else.

I went here with a foodie friend who said that the quality and taste of the gelato here was better than what she had tried in Italy, which is saying a lot! I ordered the Pepe Saya caramel and the creamy milk and they both tasted amazing! Super creamy, and full of flavour. Would definitely go back to try all of the flavors. What I loved most is that you can request for one scoop but two flavours in either a cone or cup, but the vendor is so generous that I felt like we both received more than one scoop.
The shop is small and cosy but not at all cramped. They offer a small selection of flavors with the menu printed on a sheet of paper stuck on the wall behind the counter. There are some indoor and outdoor seating, with a small bench towards the back overlooking the open kitchen so you can watch the magic happen. 100% would recommend to all of my friends and family!

Honestly the best gelato I have ever eaten outside Italy (sorry RivaReno!).
I like that the gelato is all stored inside the counter instead of being on display. You can tell how authentic it is from the silkiness. They have a great range of flavours and always updating with new ones.
Only one SMALL complaint I would have - when buying a 0.5L takeaway tub I was only allowed to get two flavours, instead of three. Not sure what the rationale is (they didn't want me to try all their flavours too fast?), but it seemed a bit petty and left a little bit of a sour taste (metaphorically of course).
That issue notwithstanding, I will definitely be back many times again!

This is now my favourite gelato shop in Sydney. Every flavour I have tried has been delicious, after half a dozen visits... and an uber eats drop off haha. Special mention for the sea salt caramel with Pepe Saya butter. Mapo reminds me of Pidapipo in Melbourne in the best possible way - minus the huge lines (though they must be inevitable given how good this is!). This is real artisan gelato. They have dethroned the Roman franchise Rivareno and Cow and The Moon as the best gelato in Sydney. How can you tell?
Well
1. They use pozzetti for a start. The metal cannisters designed specifically for the storage of gelato (the only other place in Sydney that does it is Rivareno).
2. The gelato is not stacked to the moon like in other ice cream shops that pretend to sell gelato but really sell ice cream (the scientific reason is gelato doesn't use as much cream as ice cream so there's less fat and less air that gets in when churning partly because of less fat and partly because the churn is slower).
3. They make it fresh and use real ingredients, you can tell the ingredients are real because of the colours, hazelnut is the colour of a hazelnut etc. They also only make what is in season. You won't be finding lemon gelato at the moment (even if you really want it) because lemons aren't in season yet.
4. It tastes exactly like the gelato you can find in all the small towns across Italy. Not the tourist shops in Rome but real artisan gelato.

A terrific addition to this end of King Street. So tasty, so transcendent, that I am surprised it has not been made illegal. Matt has mastered the art of crafting smoothly-textured gelato from the freshest, best quality ingredients. Fig, red plum, nectarine, fior di latte, salted caramel (made using Pepe Saya butter) and hazelnut have all been clear 10/10s. The style of the gelato served here is unique, in a class of its own; it stands out compared to contenders in the area (in a good way). In terms of freshness of taste and fruit-based gelato offerings, Mapo eclipses its long-established rivals in the inner-west, which is quite a feat. I intend to keep returning for at least a thousand more scoops!
