Comments of New Sydney Hotel
A. Y.
Delicious! Stopped in for dinner and was more than pleasantly surprised. My partner and I were happy to find that the menu suited both of our dietary requirements. The fresh market fish & asparagus was so tasty and the almond cream with the greens was also amazing. Better than a pub meal, that's for sure!

My colleagues and I like to hunt out places around Hobart and nearby that do Parmis (there’s a spreadsheet of our experiences and ratings) ha! Anyway I love the New Sydney and usually have a great time - but the parmi experience was underwhelming for the team. I was shocked to see that a Parmi cost $27!! Free range chicken at Coles is currently $13 per kilo.
The reviews:
“Waiting what seemed like an eternity to order a simple beer was a poor omen… at $27 you expect something special and unfortunately the offering was neither big enough nor different in anyway to a standard to validate the cost…The side salad was a few leaves off the pavement, very disappointing.”
“Best thing about the dish was the chips!…looked good and with bacon on top promised a lot, but the result was bland and an all round disappointing parmi. … too expensive for what you got.”

Very cool little pub with lots of interesting memorabilia adorning the walls and ceilings. Like most of the places in Tassie the staff were fantastic, pleasant and polite.
T. L.
An amazing pub that rotates craft beers on their taps. The Pig’s Ears are phenomenal and the staff, even better. This is the type of pub you feel guilty pulling your phone out at because the atmosphere is so good. Thank-you for your hospitality!
a. j.
Best cheeseburger I've had in decades, and for a reasonable price. grotty 90s dive bar vibe, with an eclectic crowd of office workers, young inner city, and the odd local derro.
A. R.
Impressed by the online booking system and the way that staff responded to it. I requested accessible seating, and on arrival staff double-checked that the table we'd been given was suitable. Food was good and service was prompt and friendly.
P.
As always dinner at the New Sydney was a very enjoyable occasion. The staff are always friendly and smiling. And the food is of good quality and portion size with options that will suit everyone. Very good range of drinks available on and off tap. Whilst busy it did not feel crowded and we were well attended to. Can't wait to head in again.
Update; I have returned to the New Sydney multiple times since this original post and each time it has been just as good.
D. K.
Enjoyed our dinner which is why we went. Parmi was top notch. The highlight was the killer whisky collection. For the whisky fanatic your going to have fun. The prices where very realistic for top shelf
N. H.
Great little pub and the staff a very friendly and attentive! Had a great time here, cheers!
G. D.
A rowdy packed bar and dining room with interesting memorabilia popular with the locals you can get a great meal here at a reasonable price and generous serves the staff are friendly makes for a good evening
S. L.
Busy little inner city pub. Very interesting decor. Porterhouse steak was good. Tender enough. Vegetables were not over cooked as they often can be in pubs. Very friendly service. Plenty of choices for beers
T. R.
Nice pub but very limited and somewhat unusual food menu.
K. F.
Has a beautiful nostalgic feel about it, great Irish memorabilia. Roaring log fire which you could watch for hours. Nice wines and spirits.
P. A.
This pub was very busy whilst we were there sat in the front bar section which has a great atmosphere m - some of the other areas may not be quite so appealing though. Good selection of food with huge portions - the pork hock should definitely be shared between 2-3 people. Would definitely go back for a pint of Guinness or two
P. P.
The overall feel of this place is amazing, you can have a drink with some friends and aslo have a meal with your family. I had the crunchy lamb shoulder, the lamb could do with a little more seasoning but it was a really dish. The lemon sorbet with meringue was one of the best deserts I have had In a long time. The meringue wasn't cooked too much and the presentation was incredible. The raspberry and passion fruit pure complimented the dish beautifully.
The new Sydney Hotel is an amazing place to eat, hang out, go for a drink and talk with some friends. Definitely coming back.
J. T.
Great local pub with an excellent parmi and live Irish music playing some nights. Kitchen closes early on weeknights though, service (while lovely) is a little slow, and make sure you have a booking because it can get busy and be difficult to find a table.
L. B.
Amazing Irish pub! We went on a night we’re there was live Irish music and such a cool vibe. Lots of people and a great selection of beers on tap! The decor of the place is very Irish and staff were friendly and efficient in such a busy bar!
S. S.
Best home made gnocchi! Great menu, impeccable service and great atmosphere with live music. It is the best little pub in town. Put this one on your must do list you won’t be disappointed. Thanks Tassie Irish live band yesterday was entertaining.
M. N.
Walked in expecting an average but good Pub meal, what we got a was an exceptionally good meal !!!!!!!
The Porterhouse Steak was cooked to perfection, far out, slaw was super fresh and light, even the chips were cooked just right. Wife had the Lamb shoulder and loved it !!!!
The smoked tomato jam was fully sick. Loved it.
Beer list is extensive, tried a few local beers that I had never had before, which was suggested by staff, was awesome !!!!!
Staff were absolutely amazing and attentive, from the moment we walked in, a real asset to this place.
Was so good we went back the next day.......
P. R.
Really nice pub. Well worth visiting. Disappointing menu.
J. F.
Always has a good range of beers and Tassie spirits
S. G.
The Guinness Pot pie was a surprise presentation and absolutely delicious, rich meaty gravy with chunky beef and smooth mash, sadly a chunk of gristle, which undoubtedly added to the flavour, was a bit too much to swallow but did not detract from the overall deliciousness of the dish. The toasted lemon meringue dessert to follow was a winner. Friendly helpful staff, great atmosphere and cherry cider on tap! I shall return.
S. A.
A small pub with a few restaurant tables to one side. Warm friendly and just great.
Food was an interesting pub menu. The food was cooked perfectly, the flavours were outstanding!
N. H.
Many bars claim to be Irish and simply end up trying too hard. This place nails it, beautiful warm fire, great beers on flow and good hearty meals to add to the mix. Friendly bar service to make you feel right at home. Best bar in Hobart. Maybe the best in Aus?
L. F.
Food was unbelievably delicious, I had the chickpea tagine and it was heavenly. We were looked after by a tall man with dark hair and beard (didn't catch his name) and he was extremely kind, helpful, knowledgeable, and fun to chat with!! Even opened the door for me when i was going to the bathroom as i am currently on crutches. What a gem!! :)
E. M.
Local pub in the heart of Hobart with a very traditional vibe. Visited for Easter Sunday - the food was great, and there was also good wine and beer selection. Enjoyed the live music and the cosy ambiance. Bonus the fireplace :)
S. D.
Well, it’s 5pm in the afternoon and I haven’t come across an Irish pub like this in years. By. Plenty of music, lovely people and a lively atmosphere. Great interior design. Loving Hobart so much!
J. S.
My favourite place in Hobart. Simon, Ash and Nick make this place one to keep coming back to. The atmosphere is great for a few beers with work colleagues or mates, or good for a dinner with the family. I am a fan of the chicken parmigiana, but I recommend the half size. Also, don't miss out on the pig ears. They are to die for.
M.
As one who grew up in Hobart and has not lived there for over 20 years, I find it comforting to find the New Sydney remains consistent every time I visit. The food is great - not pretending to be anything else other than honest pub grub served to a high standard. Good to see with a change of hands in the last few years that it remains to be one of the last true locals in the city.
S. W.
Fantastic setting packed full of character.
We visited from Sydney recently and had a really good night out here. Every staff member who served us made us feel welcome and made these 2 out of towners feel like local regulars.
You couldn’t help but notice the owners have really tried to showcase local Tassie producers which is a great touch.
We also ended up getting more food than we expected because it was so good.
There’s something here for everyone which is why we can’t wait to go back next time we’re in Hobart.
S. Z.
We spontaneously picked this fabulous pub out of the blue, whilst searching local pubs in Hobart. Only going in for a beer before moving on, we were there for hours. Best beers, served by very friendly efficient staff. Sunday arvo cool live music, which was enhanced by the local clientele, that led to the best pub food ever! Sensational Wagyu steak & Kingfish. Overall could not rate this place higher. A must do visit when here!!!!!
D. M.
A fine example of the Hotelier's art. Warm, welcoming. A proper drinking pub. A word to the barman will set you up with the right beverage. A place where your higher thoughts can be easily accessed.
B. S.
A great old time boozer and top shelf pub food.
N. H.
Awesome classic Aussie pub that’s a good mix of old & new style. Food is amazing - we had the pigs ears and the pork knuckle - both amazing!
J. S.
BEST pub in Hobart hands down. Great Irish music session on Saturday afternoons. That's where you'll find me. (Edit) Still the greatest pub in town
A. G.
The atmosphere was great, the Guinness was awesome and the fish and chips were delicious and served in a flash. Went back a couple of nights later and it was just as good, also had the fudge dessert, yum!!!! It's a pub so keep that in mind. The roaring fire was a nice touch. Can't fault the service either. Very happy.
A. T.
I was there for dinner only. But the place was great.
The waiter and waitress were very attentive, making sure everything was alright. Lovely people.
On the pic was crispy lamb, so slow cook lamb (very succulent) with crispy potatoes. I think 'tasty' will be the perfect word to describe this meal anyway.
Location is in the city, so very reachable area. And it's a very nice place to hang out and chat with friends.
So go there with friends fellas. Would definitely be a great experience!
X. A. C.
A good place already emblematic in the city. Good variety of beers and other drinks and good quality of food. A three-course combo “With your hands” and all three I liked. The atmosphere is local and cozy in an old but clean hotel built largely of wood. The staff is aware of their work and have been friendly.
S. R.
dated but fun little pub. Marshmallows was a class act. May have gotten a little drunk here.. i think it was good though
C. P.
Good beer and great meals.
S. B.
6 stars! Had great afternoon here, listening to the live Celtic music. Inviting open fire. Great beers, lovely staff. Excellent modern menu food was delicious, highly recommend the pigs ears. Got to learn to play the bones!
R. A.
A hidden gem lies behind this plain exterior. Delicious food, a great selection of beer and a fabulous atmosphere. Do your tastebuds a favour and try this place.
L. C.
Have eaten here 3 times. Great selection of food. Their steak with radish pickle was fantastic though no fat very soft meat and cooked well. Tofu pancake and curry very nice. Great selection of beer on tap and seasonal s. Great vibe busy loud and the fire roaring in winter make for a vibrant atmosphere.
Most recent experience was OK. I've found bar staff to be not really friendly but serving staff always fantastic. Had haggis for main for something different nice flavour as such but insanely salty and not enough variation of flavour to dish was essentially meat potatoes and some watercress. Needs something sweet in dish as well as something istringebt/rocket. Just unfortunately a salty boring dish but everything else I've had here has been fantastic especially the wallaby dippers. Will definitely return but the haggis....
N.
I had the most amazing cold Saturday afternoon at the New Sydney. Sitting in front of the fire, cold local pale ale in hand, listening to the local Irish musicians jamming in the back of the pub. Couldn't help but tap along with the music. It gave me that warm glow inside and made me think of how this scene would have been the same as 150 years ago. The New Sydney is a must.
S. B.
Great food and atmosphere. If you are looking for high quality pub food or a quick beer in Hobart this place is for you. Great staff also, we will definitely be back.
N. R.
Just popped into this place on a Saturday lunch time, and loved it so much. The atmosphere was amazing. About 20 musicians were in the front bar playing Irish music. The beer was great and food excellent. A little pricey, but well worth the experience. We returned on Sunday night for the jazz and great food.
d. c.
Great ambiance. Loved the live music. Food only average. Staff friendly.
S. J.
Traditional British-style pub in downtown Hobart. Full of atmosphere and down to earth appeal. Good selection of draught beers from Australia and Europe and a very good food menu. We enjoyed a pint of real beer with our excellent dinner all at very good value for money. Would definitely visit again and would highly recommend.
T. P.
Two of us had dinner (and enjoyed it enough to return the following evening for dinner a second time). Some oddities on the menu (eg starter of crispy deep fried strips of pigs ear. Main of "pigs face" which included the snout). We are nose to tail diners so this was good. Very generous portions and interesting drinks list including decent craft beers.
F. F.
A great night as always. Guinness on tap, great food and live music which I wasn't expecting. They deserve their great reputation. The staff were especially good. Professional, friendly and really, really helpful. Thankyou to you all.
G. B.
Great pub. Didn't sample the food but it certainly looked and smelled good! Good selection of beers. Lovely wood fire. Irish music playing the few times I went, including live music. Lovely atmosphere.
B. B.
Went here looking for a classic pub meal, was pleasantly surprised to find that plus a lot more. The food here is exceptional in comparison to other pubs. I highly recommend the pork knuckle but don't expect to be able to finish the whole lot, it's enormous. Very unique and delicious range of entrees too. Variety of seating available in different locations throughout the pub and upstairs, depending on if you prefer a busy bustling pub or a quieter, restaurant-like setting. All the staff I've encountered on my several visits have been superb.
J. M.
Pleasant atmosphere, variety of drinks & delicious food with an exciting menu. The chips are amazing! Very accommodating and we're happy to help us with our special requests. Private function room upstairs if needed which was very spacious. Downstairs in the pub & restaurant it was packed with people - very popular! Some of the food we received were very generous portions, others appeared very nicely on the plate but didn't have much substance to them (ended up being small portions) & food was a bit pricey. Very tasty though & would visit again!
O. B.
Great choices of food. Not too exotic or traditional, just a really exciting menu. The food was outstanding!!! We had pork rack and also octopus, amazing! Dessert, well.... didn't really have room for it but just couldn't resist! Why 4 stars? Because we are coming back tomorrow night to check out the rest of the menu!
L. B.
Loved this place Nick and all the staff make you feel so at home great local beer selection fantastic food and just a great friendly atmosphere and great live music on Sunday evening when we were there
T. T.
Quick visit but in that time I had a delectable beer (Milkshake IPA) and sampled two small dishes. The food was so good I almost didn't manage to take the posted pics. Staff wonderful, kind and keen to help.
S. P.
This place has a fantastic atmosphere, staff and food. Will def visit again. Pigs ears, wallaby popcorn, Guiness pie and chicken breast dish. Delicious.
A.
Winter time is the best time to experience this awesome little pub. Tucked away in the city centre, you'd never know that this little gem even existed! With its roaring open fires and warm mulled beverages, where else would you want to spend a cold damp winter's day!?! They offer a brilliant gastropub menu, although on the pricier side compared to some other pub's in the area, the food though is absolutely delicious and well worth every penny!
R. C.
Great vibes, amazing food. The parmi is massive and the pork knuckle is unrivalled in Hobart. Best pub in town!
R. B.
I love this place! Bar staff are super friendly, and know beer well. They change their tap beer regularly, so there is often something new to try. Food is great. The fire in winter is superb, and they have free marshmallows for roasting!
B. N.
Very accommodating, interesting menu, great food and live music. What more can you ask from a pub? Turned up as a group on Sunday night, greeted warmly and nothing was too much trouble, we were even able to split the bill. Can't recommend this hotel enough.
E. R.
Was really impressed with the menu and service tonight. :)
A. G.
I regret not taking a photo of my delicious meal! Rump Wagu! Cooked to perfection on a bed of an amazing beetroot roti! We had a food allergy on the table and the chef sent the food out on a different coloured plate to signal the allergy! She couldn't finish her meal so gave her remains to her partner and changed plates! When the waiter came back around he noticed the plate change and was concerned she had eaten food with the allergin! Wow! Amazing! Thank the staff and chef for me! I look forward to my return! A++++
D. S.
Atmosphere in this place is really cosy. It looks like a regular city pub at a first glance but it is just the first experience. Best thing is the food and it is quite different and unique
J. S.
An amazing hotel. Fantastic food, great atmosphere
M.
The Guinness sign out the front lured us in, but the amazing staff (Lucy, Zac and Jordan) are what made us stay! Amazing food, unbeatable customer service and seriously the hottest fireplace I’ve ever sat in front of. Hands down, the best pub we have been in (and we have been to quite a fair few! Ha)
J. M.
Great old style pub with excellent beer and spirit selection, fantastic food, and even better service.
P. C.
Awesome pub, friendly staff, great beer tap list. If you want a home away from home, hit this pub up. Good staff. Great food, still drooling over the pork knuckle, have the hand tap beers for something special.
R. K.
Really good classic pub, the bar staff were very nice and good at their jobs. A+++
J. R.
Walked into this beautiful bar from a very chilly street. The place was cosy and warm from the roaring fireplace, so we sat down and ordered a couple of beers from the drinks menu, which had a great selection of very nice beers and ciders.
The staff were all really friendly and added to the excellent atmosphere.
We ended up settling in for a couple of hours and ordering some dinner to go along with the great bluesy jazz band that had started playing. The food came in no time and it was delicious. I ordered the roast pork hock and it was the quintessential pub grub dish. One of the best meals I've ever been served in a pub or restaurant, and it was huge.
We were only going to stay for an hour but ended up staying for several until we really had to go.
I couldn't recommend this place more highly, can't wait to go back.
C. N.
Great pub, great crowd and nice fire on a cold night
J. C.
A real good vibe to this pub. The size of the serving of food in this restaurant is extremely generous. I had a waygu steak, it wasnt marbled like I would have expected. The steak was undercooked it was too rare I had too send it back, not happy with it. But in their defence I saw many other items on their menu come out and they all looked impressive in serving size and presentation. I would go back but try something else. Good selection beer.
T. A.
Fairly decent place. Interesting decor. Ok to good live music. Good value drinks & range, didn't try the food. Very strange & loud bartender though who told some customers they were closing up, but continued to serve others. Played favourites & it was uncomfortable. I'd consider going again, but not sure.
R. S.
Been here twice now and am definitely a fan. Very friendly staff and was pleased to hear that they will be adding more vegan options to the menu! Pictured here is the (vegan) tofu pancakes - perfect sized portion and filling. Looking forward to coming back here in the future.
P. D.
Classic pub decor with a mixture modern and classic pub offerings on the menu. The table service is impeccable, the food was of mixed quality iny experience. The duck was cooked well and had excellent flavours. Unfortunately the steak was lacking. The fat was under cooked and the sinewy layer was untrimmed making the steak difficult to cut. I'd recommend sticking to the modern dishes.
A. H.
Very trendy Irish pub for the mature IN crowd. Great themed decor. Extremely crowded when busy. Regular live music. Good food. Well stocked bar with wide variety of beers.
A. M.
Absolutely magic old pub. We just don't get pubs like this at home in NZ.
We didn't have a meal but they all looked good. great Irish music...big open fire...good selection of beer and wine. Staff all friendly and helpful.
J. W.
This is a very active place with an ecelectic crowd. Excellent selection of beers on tap. Food was delicious with oversized portions (the roast pig knuckle will serve two easily). Service was friendly and prompt. If I lived here I'd be a regular.
k. f.
My favorite pub in Hobart. Great live music and regular local events. Excellent range of drinks on tap and behind the bar. Though the menu has gotten a bit fancy of late, the food is very high quality. Great place to meet up for drinks, or book for an event.
r. b.
Excellent pub/ counter meal. Good service, nice inner city pub atmosphere and good range on the menu. No parking supplied and took me a while to find a park as I had elderly ppl accompanying me, I was trying to find a close and level park. Ended up having to drop off passengers and go park a block or so away.
Lovely meals for us all tho
T. R.
It feels warm and friendly as soon as you walk in and thaw out in front of the fire. Then you look around and see all the memorabilia everywhere.
The tucker is great, the starters very different. The mains are good too.
The staff are friendly and professional, as soon as you finish your drink they're in front of you asking if you'd like another.
The Sunday jam session is cool, not too loud and very comfy feeling.
In all, a very nice experience which I will mention in my travels.
My thanks to the bar and catering staff for your efforts, they are appreciated.
Cheers Reno, Townsville 😉 👍
B. W.
Best pub in Australia in my opinion! Awesome food, good selection of beers, absolutely wonderful staff, great ambience, and the jam sessions on Saturday arvo are the hilight of my week. If I didn't live so far away I'd be much poorer and fatter than I am. Can't recommend this place highly enough.
S. T.
This little pub is without doubt the best in Australia, not just Tasmania. If you are after more than just a pint and some good honest food and are craving a true Irish atmosphere with music, singing and friendship. Go and take a pew at the bar. You will not want to leave.
I. M.
Lamb rump was top notch.
T. G.
Outstanding public house, and exceptional range of Tasmanian and other beverages on Tap! Great service, great staff, and a Parmi the size of your face 😂
G.
What a great pub. It's like a tardis inside with so much more than you would expect from looking in off the street. Upon entering you are warmly welcomed by the friendly bar staffand a roaring open fire that you can today marshmallows on (provided free). It has a lovely beer garden, huge upstairs area with a small bar and lots of rooms for other events/ fictions. A group playing dungeon and dragons were in off of the rooms. All this and a phenomenal beer secretion on tap to choose from.
This is a must for any local or tourist who enjoys great venues with even better beers.
S. L.
Meandered on in here at another traveller's recommendation. The Irish music association was having a jam session - amazing!! They do this every Saturday afternoon and into the evening. We decided to dine here, too (book ahead for sure), and were blown away by the creativity and quality of the menu. Delicious! And while you're there, consider trying the hot spiced apple and ginger cider to help warm you up in winter.
E. F.
Awesome grub, hot fire, and a great local hangout! Hot cider was amazing!
As a vegan, I particularly appreciated the tofu pancake! Supreme flavour profile! Matched with a wheaty beer on tap is UNREAL!
S. D.
So extremely full from our dinner here. We had the crispy lamb trout, porterhouse steak andthe pork knuckle, all of which were delicious! Large serving sizes. Hotel has a good atmosphere as well and the staff were all very friendly.
S. H.
Super friendly service. The food is great. The fish and chips is a very generous serve and really cooked to perfection, the steaks are awesome and so tender - a must for steak lovers. This place is popular so I suggest booking a table!
M. L. (.
Huge meal portions, suited to state the largest appetite. Friendly staff and homely atmosphere creates a great rounded experience. Thank you for a great dinner
j. s.
Amazing food and good crafts beers. Spend about 40 on a meal and 10 per pint. Waitress was really nice and could answer all the questions of my beer loving English friend. Musicians who started at 8:30 were above average.
K. M.
Great atmosphere with an open fire, welcoming staff with a good pint of Guinness.
N. H.
Love this place.
Always a regular.
Food is amazing. Good big portion sizes.
Never walk away hungry.
Love the variety of beverages on tap.
Lovely welcoming staff.
B. D.
I'll just echo everyone else's reviews . . . great pub! Fantastic staff and atmosphere and amazing food - all the usual pub classics but with a lot of extra variety as well.
My go-to pub when in Hobart, everytime.
M. R.
Solid is the word that comes to mind!
They have an impressive offering of local drinks the food was exceptional and the service super friendly.
Can’t recommend enough!
J.
Pub with lively atmosphere and fireplace. Friendly staff. Not huge beer selection, have food available, looks good but haven't tried it. Have been here in context of 'science in the pub' presentations. There is an upstairs venue for presentations, however quite noisy from the pub below.
M. M.
Excellent place to visit, food , service, atmosphere. Go there everytime I'm in Tas. My 14yr boy loves it to the staff are so helpfull. Old fashioned service with a smile!
M. N.
One of my go-to venues whenever I visit Hobart. Very much enjoy the range of beers on tap, especially seeing what they have int he hopinator. The food and service are excellent too.
S. M.
Music, fireplace, good food and beer. Can't really ask for more. Gets very busy so book ahead
T. Q.
From the outside and front bar it looks like your average Irish pub. With great service and atmosphere. The food absolutely blew all of us away, it belongs to a high class restaurant. Try the pork neck and arancini balls, incredible!
M. D.
Quiet, friendlly pub, interesting delicious menu based on traditional foods with a twist of whoohoo flavour! Fantastic staff who just couldn't do enougb in a warm, spontaneous way. Not pushy or bothersome. Soda bread was only disapointment.
D. H.
One of the best pubs in Hobart. Good selection of beers, and some great food. Meals are a bit more expensive than pub food, but well worth it. I especially love their gnocchi.
L. J.
Food is amazing beer with a great bar staff and friendly.
If you want to have a meal bookings are essential as they are super popular
D. C.
One of the best pubs in Hobart with a warm friendly down to earth atmosphere. They do top notch meals and their steaks in particular are consistently great.
R. S.
Amazing pub! Best in Hobart. Great live music, personable staff. Great food! I’ll be back.
C. B.
Awesome pub. Great beer selection on tap. great friendly service and friendly locals. The food is quite good. shame not to see an Irish Stew or a Steak and Guinness Pie on the menu.
J. S.
A quite splendid pub. Hottest fireplace in Hobart and the best mash potatoes in the island.
Quality food, helpful staff, good beer range
S. D.
I have always loved the new Sydney. Good beer, good food. What makes it even better is watching one of the guys from behind the bar dealing with a problem. A small child throwing up over the parents table. Sorted out without much fuss, apart from saying how great it was too see the kids in here.
J. O.
As I sat, sipping on a glass of wine at The Brick Factory, I received an instant message from Damien, asking where I was planning to have dinner tonight . “Spooky”, I replied, “I was just going through your email thinking exactly the same thing”. He and Kristin love their food and wine, are big fans of Hobart, have bought a house here, and are planning to move here, and so of course I asked him for suggestions.
Though they haven’t actually been the the “New Sydney Hotel”, Damien told me “Everyone who goes here raves about the quality of the food. Top notch pub food, only a 10 min walk from where you’re staying. Highly recommended.”
Getting to the hotel was simple: about only 1km walk from where I was at Salamanca Place. On arrival, I did a circuit twice trying to find somewhere to sit. I ended up at the bar, chose a nice beer, and three small plates ($33). Their “takes” on fried chicken, pigs ears and arancini were all well presented. Though they all tasted excellent, it was actually a little too much food for just me, and there was a little bit of a sameness to the flavours of the dishes I chose. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed the meal, and the atmosphere, and the service was friendly and attentive.
A good suggestion, I’ll definitely return.

Id like to eat at some other places when i come to Hobart but i keep coming back here! Exceptional pub food ++ and drink options and always lovely staff. If i had $1 for every time I've recommended this place.....
B.
Great food, beers that you can't find available anywhere else and amazing staff. Food prices a little steep, but great quality, and reasonable considering it's right in the CBD
A. J.
Vibe of an old English pub. Cozy ambiance with wood fire. Great place have conversation with mates.
N. D. M.
Fairly pricey, but you won't be disappointed with the quality of the food. Average selection of alcohol (especially if you don't drink beer). Seating is usually tricky to find for dinner, so make sure you book in advance.
A.
Surprised by how good this was. The pub isn’t much to look at from the outside, but once I was in, the service was top notch (friendly, proactive, helpful waiting staff), the parma was one of the best I’ve had (I’ve had quite a few) and it came out pretty quick for a Friday night. Nice atmosphere too.
V.
Great food, nice atmosphere with live music and fireplace. Very helpful staff
C. H.
What an incredible institution! Super great food and drinks but best of all has a community conscience. No gambling machines and no Tasmanian salmon on the menu! I'll be going even more regularly than ever!
C. G.
Bucks night started well here and ended even better lol. The food is amazing and the staff are definitely the strength for this business. Absolutely spot on service and food was epic.
R. P.
Great food, all the pub options you expect like fish and chips, chicken parmie and steak but also totally different options like pork neck with clams and pigs ears which was delicious. They also have a fantastic range of local and imported beers, wines and ciders and I love trying whatever is in the hopinator each time I go (the hopinator is where the New Sydney takes a local beer or cider and infuses it with extra flavours).
S. N.
35 years ago ..hasn't changed lovely homely atmosphere...bar staff are very helpful.and have local knowledge. Music is amazing Sunday nights for me anyway...food and drinks are delicious....
A. N.
Amazing food - i mean absolutely top notch, possibly the best steak ive ever had. Selection of wine and beer hard to rival and service was friendly. Didnt do the tasting menu but value wise think it would be hard to beat
S. D.
Staff were delightfully attentive and knew their menu well to cater for our party's numerous different requirements. The food was very tasty. I would highly recommend it
C. C.
I love this pub. Open fireplace, cosy, the building is full of character, live music at certain times of the day, always a different variety of craft beer, upstairs available for bookings, and a beer garden all in the middle of Hobart.
A. M.
“Sickest local. Proper popping on a Sunday night, live music and old blokes dancing. Roaring fire and a bowl of free marshmallows to toast. Serious care taken in Guinness pouring aswell, tasted like heaven” - what e said
M. N.
Firstly, this is one of the only pubs in Hobart where I've been able to chat with random people. Everywhere else people stick to their cliques and everyone else is dead to them.
Despite looking like a typical Irish pub they have good craft beers at good prices and a very cosy layout that fits during the quiet daytime and later.
A very good local if you are just visiting or a Hobart local.
J. F.
Fantastic little pub with excellent staff, an open fireplace, constantly rotating beers/ciders on tap and no televisions!
Food is also fantastic, pricey but worth what you pay.
F.

B. M.
Food wonderful. Great selection and variety. Catering for all food dietary needs.
Atmosphere warm and interesting. Music not invasive.
J. S.
Wow! What a place. You will be instantly transported to a place where you feel at home. The bartenders are attentive, informative, and a little bit cheeky. The menu is you have walked into a Michelin Star Gastronomy Restaurant - I can recommend the Pigs ear 🐖👂
A.
Had the pork knuckle and Tasmanian octopus. Pork was a massive serve. Really well cooked and the potatoe and sauerkraut were delicious. It just needed more of the sides. Tasmanian octopus was delicious but the serve size could've been bigger. Only two pieces of octopus. Boags XXX Ale on tap was great.
S. S.
Wow, what a little gem this place is. Great selection of local craft beer on tap. The food was surprisingly excellent, with some off the wall dishes which were amazing.
A. D.
The best pub meal I have had. The best open fire I have sat near.....
Good selection of beers on tap. Just a really good pub!
S. O.
I could be biased, being a local who is at the New Sydney on a regular basis. I love the place. The staff are friendly and Al, the licensee, is one of my favourite people.
Saturday sessions are fun and its great when we get interstate visitors who join in and sing some good Irish songs.
The New Sydney supports local people doing their thing, whether it be philosophy at the pub, men and bubs, and the musicians. Eclectic and just a little eccentric. . . .that's the New Sydney.
J. M.
The tagline out the front reads "the best little pub in town," and while I'm not exactly well-versed in Hobart's pub scene, I'm yet to find any reason to disagree! Service can be a bit slow when it's packed, but surely the fact that it does get packed says something about it's reputation? The staff are incredibly friendly, the food is great, the location is convenient, and if you like Irish music this is THE place to be on a Saturday evening (I recommend combining the 3pm-8pm folk session with a visit to the famous Salamanca Market in the morning. I find it makes for an almost perfect day out!). The venue itself doesn't seem to be designed for music events; the acoustics are, I'm sorry to say, rather shocking to be frank, but this is made up for by the pub's cosy, welcoming nature - a toasty log fire in winter, the previously mentioned friendly staff and wholesome menu, and the hospitable regular patrons all make for a great craic any time of day or year!...
M. E.
One of the best pubs meals you can get. Number one in Hobart, eaten here many times and every time is a pleasure. Keep it up
A. L.
Friendly staff. Beautiful big fireplace. Lovely English style pub full of happy people. ( Be careful where you park. We got a ticket. Read the signs twice.)
J. G.
My favourite bar in Hobart without a doubt. Amazing food, great beers on tap, warm fire, great live music. Go on, you know you want to!!!
L. R.
Great way to treat ourselves after the Three Capes Track. After days of dehydrated food and water, this was an oasis with generous portions and a terrific wine selection. Great service and centrally located.
J. C.
Yeah look, best service, drink and food I’ve had in a long while. These guys know what they’re about. Just ask. Would recommend to any Melbourne foodie who thinks they know what’s up!
A. A.
A must for a different menu. Take a break from the standard menu offerings in Hobart and enjoy great food and friendly staff.
A. V.
Great pub, nice selection of beers on tap
Great lunchtime menu. Dinner a little pricy but nice food. Great atmosphere
M. H.
Amazing food, comfortable friendly atmosphere, great beer selection and some of the nicest people in Hobart. We had an awesome time, and would highly recommend going to the New Sydney Hotel for a great night out.
C. K.
Awesome service by Laura excellent food wonderful atmospher we loved it
Thanks Christa Kennedy and Denise Randall from Brisbane Qld
D. H.
One of the best pubs in Hobart. Good selection of beers, and some great food. Meals are a bit more expensive than pub food, but well worth it. I especially love their gnocchi.
C. H.
What an incredible institution! Super great food and drinks but best of all has a community conscience. No gambling machines and no Tasmanian salmon on the menu! I'll be going even more regularly than ever!
T. R.
It feels warm and friendly as soon as you walk in and thaw out in front of the fire. Then you look around and see all the memorabilia everywhere.
The tucker is great, the starters very different. The mains are good too. …
M. H.
This is my local and I love it. It is the only pub that I feel comfortable going into alone. Big Al and the other staff are so friendly.
J. S.
Wow! What a place. You will be instantly transported to a place where you feel at home. The bartenders are attentive, informative, and a little bit cheeky. The menu is you have walked into a Michelin Star Gastronomy Restaurant - I can recommend the Pigs ear 🐖👂

Absolutely magic old pub. We just don't get pubs like this at home in NZ.
We didn't have a meal but they all looked good. great Irish music...big open fire...good selection of beer and wine. Staff all friendly and helpful.
B. T.
Would give four stars but for what you are paying you should get more. I feel like I am paying more to be there. Go to Shamrocks.

Cool old style pub with great food and drinks. Chill vibe with lovely and attentive staff who make you feel like a local. Will definitely be back!

Returned after an excellent dinner last year; The New Sydney Hotel (The Greatest Little Pub In Town est 1835) is situated in Bathurst Street Hobart, near the Central City Shopping Mall, offers log fires, 16 Beer on tap, (these change regularly) 11 wines by the glass, Function room, Beer Garden, Irish session 3pm to late every saturday and open 364 days a year. Note: No TV, No Pokies. The moment you walk in the door you are greeted with a large eclectic array of Irish signs, photographs, and Irish memorabilia. On the dining end wall is a large colourful copy of a renoir master painting, depicting a French Dining Scene. The bar area is expansive and comfortable, with dining areas available at either end. The side wall occupies a large menu board, topped with character portraits of many famous people, including, Entertainers, Prime Ministers and Presidents, all creating a fascinating and friendly ambience. This Hotel is unpretentious, quaint and cosy. The extensive menu includes, blood sausage, lamb rump, pork belly, crispy goat, bobby veal, and paella, all prepared by a very experienced International chef. The dessert menu is to die for, including golden syrup dumplings with Baileys ice-cream and honeycomb, a Trio of berry, pistachio and coffee ice cream and vanilla creme brullee, with coffee soil and pistachio. We chose crumbed scallops with beer battered fries and salad, a perennial favourite; and crispy goat shoulder served with spiced chick peas, pumpkin and chick peas tendrils, for the more adventurous, and served in its own small frypan on a wooden block, looked good, tasted even better. Our desserts of golden syrup dumplings with Baileys ice-cream and honey comb, Vanilla creme brullee, with coffee soil and pistachio, finished the meal very satisfactorily, a memorable dinning experience. The excellent service staff contributed to the excellent evening. A must visit when in Hobart.
J. M.
Top evening.. delish meal (I enjoyed the porterhouse with chips n fresh salad - not laced with any 'additives').. so good! Big Al was in tonight.. greeting people n making em feel special and we were cared for (not just looked after!) by the delightful Michelle.. man th thanks to you people XXXX

G. W.
Very nice beer selection and well above average food. Not cheap but I'll be very happy to visit again.
B.
A classic Hobart venue that recently changed owners/operators. Not quite what it used to be, but still very good. The new Parmi’s are huge!
f.
Excellent revolving craft beers, excellent gastro pub food, good staff and the single best fireplace in human history
N. V.
Great pub. They have regular events and themes which makes it a lovely bar. The staff are friendly and the food is what you expect.

If you're in Hobart on a Saturday afternoon, go in and soak it all up. Great choice of beverages and you might be lucky and see the Irish Jam session. Great craic.
C. J.
The cheeseburger was great, eaten next to a roaring fire on a cold winter's day.
M. W.
Just been to "Science in the Pub". A great event. Now its dinner. Staff extremely friendly and helpful. The mushroom, burnt onion and spinach gnocchi was fantastic.

We wanted to experience a good old tassie traditional hotel and this place did not disappoint
We were drawn in on a Sunday night by the music and the Guinness sign outside 🙂
The decor is authentic but querky...but let's talk about the service and the food 👌
Top notch from as soon as we walked through the door...we we're made to feel very welcome even though staff where busy and the dining area was full
We didn't have a booking but the service staff accommodated us

The food is delicious and beautifully presented, with some quite experimental inclusions on the menu, which is somewhat at odds with the decor, atmosphere and sometimes cramped seating.
J. S.
It's a great pub for Tassie craft beer. Had a whey stout which was excellent. Atmosphere is nice and cosy.
