Comments of The Whaler
R. W.
A great little pub by the water. We rolled up at 10:30pm on a Tuesday night and the staff were more than happy to serve us. Good range of beers on tap and a few others in the cabinets. Nice outdoors seating vibe.
K. M.
Our first stop on arrival in Hobart. Could not go past the lobster roll! Enjoyed afternoon beverage and snacks and was back the following night for after dinner drinks. Worth a visit, staff are friendly and wines are on point!
K. C.
The whaler is the sort of pub you seek solace in when it's freezing and is a bit stinky during the summer months.
It's part of the old Hobart, the sandstone road that houses a row of old timey cuisines like Thai, Italian and indian. It's hard to tell how local places like these are amongst the tourists.
But the atmosphere was good, staff were friendly and it'll probably be here in a couple of hundred years.
P. P.
Beautiful, laid back spot with a fireplace.
I took the plunge and tried the Sournade blue craft beer and i loved it. Perfect place to sit for a while and relax.
J. W.
Had the lobster linguine, very delicious. Not filling. Nice cozy atmosphere.
B. H.
A very vibey bar with a dark and warm atmosphere. Beautiful stained glass and wooden beams throughout the bar. Very friendly staff too!
N. T.
While the dining area may be minimal, my friend and I sat by a warm fireplace and sat comfortably in an ambiently lit room. Country blues style music rang through the building amid the chit chat of other patrons. The food was plentiful at a reasonable price, with hearty burgers and plentiful chips. Their sauce options were commendable.
It mostly excels as a bar, with plenty of drink options and friendly staff that deliver quick and friendly service.
Another worthy note are the glass murals that adorn the bar, giving the place a distinctive character.

You must visit The Whaler it’s an amazing pub with great food and lots of drinks to choose from. Have you ever tried a cucumber, mint gose beer, thats sour and salty. It’s awesome, your mind struggle to figure out what your palette is tasting, its from another planet, it’s delicious. Highly recommend this place.
A. S.
Ok I guess. The lamb loaded fries were a generous serve but the "famous" lobster roll was small, limp and whatever lobster was there, was drowned in the salad and sauce. (I'm guessing frozen lobster due to the lack of any texture.)
P. B.
Nice local pub but limited seating for meals at peak time.
Good drinks with a huge range of spirits and good food.
B. R.
Warm, friendly and inviting. Great pub feed! We got a burger and Schnitty and it was exactly what you want. Classic warm style pub with a fire place.
S. S.
Great vibes....tons of choices of beer....food was good...probably gonna go there again soon
E. L.
Incredible meal, and surprisingly tasty lemon lime and bitters! Would definitely return. We had the Chicken Royale burger and lobster roll. Both delicious and filling
A. C.
Have to get the lobster roll. Delicious and not too filling so you can still enjoy many drinks they have to offer
N. H.
Awesome pub with a big variety of beers and other drinks - always warm & welcoming
j. g.
Amazing food and atmosphere. Great service. Will definitely come again!!! Lobster roll is to die for
M. M.
Awesome tiny pub! The food is really good! 😋And the service is friendly. But the music is a bit too loud at times.
T. S.
The Whaler is a bit of a Hobart icon off Salamanca Place. It’s a very pleasant place to stop for a quick drink after a browse at the famous market. The pub is a little darkish and atmospheric. It’s in a heritage building which has lovely stained glass above the bar. The 60s music on enhanced the atmosphere in early afternoon. The staff were terrific. I’d happily return.
S. K.
Cosy, quaint, proper old pub. Very competent, friendly staff. Good and not overwhelming menu for food and drinks. Had a Barrel Aged Brooklyn (nice twist on a Manhattan), a beer and some hot chips that were obscenely yummy.
J. C.
Really really great food at very reasonable prices
C. A.
Had a really great meal here last night. There weren't many places open at 9pm on a Thursday so we didn't have high expectations. Will definitely be back though, some of the best chips I've ever had at a pub!
L. S.
Amazing food, with a real warm open fireplace. Children loved their meals & the steak was perfectly cooked. Staff are very friendly with very prompt service. We all loved the Whaler.
A. F.
Great spot for a beer or drink anytime of the day or night. I didn’t enjoy the food but it looked yummy. The atmosphere was so comfortable I could have settled in for a long chat over many drinks. Inside or outside this bar is a winner.
g. s.
Taste was there however they have a small serving dish. I wasn't expecting knowing that most of the seafood from Tassie.
C. M.
The mussels are to die for! If they have them on, I cannot advise you enough! GO HERE!!
My wife had the mussels, and I had the lamb souvlaki. I was well jel of the mussels, however, the lamb was bonkers good also.
Good beer selection and nice setting 👍🏼💥
C. J.
Cosy and warm atmosphere with great drinks on tap. The sausage fennel gnocci was perhaps the best I've had. It just melted in my mouth. Although, the portion was quite small and didn't completely satisfy (we ordered extra loaded lamb fries to compensate). While the burger was just another good burger, the Chicken Parmy was incredible. Would definitely come here again when in Hobart and would recommend to others.
J. P.
Food was ok. The lobster roll had very little lobster in it. Service is not exactly friendly.
J. I.
Great location. Bit of a tourist trap. I don’t mind Paying dollar for an orange juice and beer but couldn’t they serve fresh juice even Wollies or Coles home brand tastes better than the stuff that never sees a refrigerator for six months after bottling . Also sticky tables, not hard to fix, just clean regularly with a clean damp cloth. Beer was ok though.
g. h.
Chicken royal burger is to die for! My God. So good! Add bacon
L. P.
Good pub with a variety of craft beer on tap, inside is warm and cozy for a crispy day.
A. G.
Extremely relaxed, great choice of drinks, fantastic service from staff
A. L.
We had a very good experience, laughing and good conversation. I highly recommend the place. It is Better to book first, because the place is very requested.
H. C.
Coolest barman. Delicious and generous meals. One of the most consistently delicious steaks in Tassie. Our lunchtime treat spot!!
M. M.
The mussels!! Oh my god the mussels
And the Lobster roll, the steak, the burger and the pasta - all excellent! The food here is fantastic. A bit exxy for a pub but the views and the mussels make it all worth it!
j. m.
My first ever non 5 star review. Lobster roll was very tasty but geez she’s small. Still a hungry hungry boy
s. w.
Stopped in for a snack and drink. I was treated to one of the best cocktails ever the lady behind bar was awesome. The Whaler fries r to so yum u just can't stop eating them.
Cocktail is called painkiller and omg it was amazing 🥰🥰🥰
G. D.
First time inTasmania, First beer in Tasmania! Great choice gaz!!! Great staff, very helpful!! Very amicable atmosphere, and from my first impression, very popular bar. Will definitely visit again... all the best Whaler...
D. L.
My favourite spot for a drink on a cold day in Hobart. Very cozy with a great range of beer and a cider on tap.
S. D.
Cool place. Pretty dark inside but I liked that. Can sit outside under the heaters which is great. A little $$ - was hoping for a more extensive craft beer selection.
S. A.
The friendliest of staff. One of the only places in Hobart you can go and sit at the bar alone and still have a great night out. Thursdays are DJ nights and go real good if you dont mind loudness.
J. R.
Wings were great, burger was great, local beers on tap
A. G.
Decent pub, warm with fire place. Good food and selection of alcohol. Outdoor seating for summer or the brave in winter!
D. H.
Had a fantastic night here. The chicken schnitzel is without a doubt one of the best I've ever had and the staff are very friendly. Great atmosphere and a fun place to chill out. Highly recommend if you're into pubs.
A. B.
Very atmospheric with a nice range of beers
P. W.
Awesome live music quite often! Great bar range, always got something interesting or new on tap. Awesome atmosphere, great place to hang out with friends, or make new ones. Haven't personally had food there, so can't comment on that, but it always seems to be busy, be it afternoon or midnight, and is a great place. Can be noisy, but in the scheme of similar venues, not bad.
D.
Well made lemon-lime and bitters.
The lamb souvlaki was delicious and well portioned.
Service was adequate and friendly.
Prices were reasonable.
A.
Great staff; friendly service. My burger was decent but some of their other menu items looked great
M. M.
Cosy little bar that has something for everyone. Awesome staff and nice vibe. 👌
J. M.
The words 'gourmet' and 'pub food' don't usually go together but this place is absolutely amazing, me and the boys make it a mission to come in at least every fortnight to get the wings here. Everything on the menu is of exceptional standards, well priced for what you get, everything is so fresh and tasty it's remarkable really, it's clear the chef takes a lot of pride in their work. They have a massive selection of beer, whiskey, gin, vodka basically whatever you could possibly want branded or craft and if by some reason they don't have exactly what you'd like the terrific and helpful bar staff will go above and beyond to suggest something similar. Good selection of local brews on tap. The decor is beautifully old fashioned with an oak bar and stained glass pictures around the place, old posters and a fireplace in the corner which really allows you to encapsulate that this place is a little over 180 years old. This is the undeniable pinnacle of how a bar in Hobart should be.
T.
We stopped by for a cocktail and pizza during Dark Mofo and loved this place, friendly and attentive staff, great cocktail list and the pizza was great.
M. O.
It's was a child spring evening in Hobart, they had the fire roaring and a good selection of local and mainland craft beers. Ordered a burger and was again pleasantly surprised.
Unfortunately was only a short stay so didn't get to enjoy the outside seating on a warmer day.
L. C.
I can't remember a trip to Hobart where I haven't gone into this pub for a drink. Great old waterfront pub charm, a beautiful old wooden bar and always filled with laughter. During our latest visit we sampled some of the many new Gin varieties recommended by the staff. Raining outside, speciality tassie gin inside... What a great afternoon!
D. T.
Great staff.nice fire good food.very welcoming.
S. G.
Lovely Moo Brew ales and delicious apple cider.
Having been largely disappointed by the beer offerings in Tasmania, I was thrilled to be offered a taste of the two Moo Brew beers by the delightful bar lady and find them both very good. Consequently I ordered both! My partner also had the local organic apple cider which was cloudy and had a great flavour. The fries were also good though there was sadly no vinegar to please my British buds.
Well worth a visit!
T. G.
A lovely little pub in a beautiful street. The food was delicious and the stain glass murals are wonderful. Great spot for a feed or cheeky pint. My favourite pub in Hobart by far
c. m.
Tasty mussels but small portion.
D. G.
Their food is top notch, with incredible burgers that aren't too fancy and just plain tasty! Always a great selection of beers on tap. Very friendly and neighbourly vibe from the staff. To top it off they have great blues and interesting musos on the weekends.
S. G.
Great meal and cold guinness
L. B.
Perfect place for a craft beer and some yummy food. The location in right in the middle of the action, the staff are very friendly and the selection of both beers and food is perfect. Had a great time while visiting.
B.
Relatively small venue with outdoor seating in a great location, fairly decent drink selection and awesome food. I think it's best to enjoy a burger with a pint of beer earlier on in the night, before moving on to other venues in the area.
J. C.
Service was quick and friendly, drink choices were solid and the food was fantastic. Both the Bourbon BBQ Wings and the 'Whac' burger were spot on! Definitely one to return too.
C.
Dirty mayo was a pleaser and over all the food was decent but rather average. Others at the table really enjoyed the burgers and croquettes. I would recommend for casual outings
C. M.
Went here twice whilst in Hobart. Great pub. Great staff and service.
Had lunch here on sunday, great burgers.
Eating in front of the roaring fire was so welcomed after walking in the pouring rain.
Great vibe.
R. M.
A regular go-to when I'm in Hobart for work, The Whaler is a great place to sit and have a pint or two in Salamanca. Friendly staff and a warm atmosphere.
K.
We had a family reunion in Hobart recently and this great pub became a bit of a legend. We first had lunch there having fish and chips (pomme frites style and really good) and the toasted cuban sandwich was fabulous. We then ate for dinner and had the Fire Pot...so good. The third time we had about 22 of us for dinner and everyone raved about the food (steak and hamburgers were great). The service at the bar is friendly, the food was brought out promptly, the price was very reasonable for the quality and this is one of the best quality pub meals we have eaten in Tassie so far. Sitting next to the log fire on a cold night was also appreciated. Can't speak highly enough of this venue.
A. M.
The staff are there to serve. The decor is predictable and unoriginal. The drinks prices are definitely on the high end because they like seeing how much the tourist is willing to get robbed. Great location hence the large prices. Wonder if that money goes to rent or more appropriately the staff.
J. M.
Amazing food and even better service. Especially the tall ginger with long hair and beard was super friendly and had some great tips to enjoy Hobart. A must for anyone going to Hobart even for 1 drink. Building ripe with history.
Y.
Very popular among locals. Ordered a light brew as recommended by the host and it's great. Will come again.
A. F.
Excellent music, mostly soul, laid back atmosphere and freindly staff. Croquettes were a bit weird and sloppy but all in all I had a good time! 100% would visit again.
J. B.
While The Whaler is one of the smaller hospitality venues on the Salamanca Strip, it certainly has great character! Staff are great (and on the ball with ID since I got asked for ID at the age of 24) and they have bar snacks to go with their large range of beers and ciders on tap which are a mixture of mainstream and craft beverages. The coolest part of The Whaler is the stained glass windows above the bar which depict Tasmania's whaling history during colonial times and are a throwback to what Salamanca used to be: storage buildings for Hobart's booming port industry. Since the place is small and there are a fair few tables, The Whaler isn't the most mobility friendly venue (most places in Salamanca aren't) but during quieter periods, there would be space to move around. Definitely one of the better venues in the Salamanca Strip to be steeped in Hobart's history while knocking back a pint!
I. H.
Adjacent to Salamanca market. Yummy lobster roll, mussel bowl & drinks + nice hot open fire!
S.
Nice American style pub food with a great selection of chilli sauces. We enjoyed the big whac and pulled pork burgers with fries which were very reasonably priced at $16 each. The $10 long neck cascade export stout is a bargain and it's worth a visit just for that! Staff were really friendly and helped us find a table so we could eat with our baby. Will visit again!
K. W.
Been my "local" since they reopened. Great food at a decent price, good range of beers and an unpretentious atmosphere. One of the best Hobart pubs.
K. A. B.
I am a fan of the burgers here and I always go back to get one but for some reason today it taste different its really dry. The chicken burger looks over cook or maybe they just change the breading or something. Hopefully they are just having a bad day.
A. K.
Bar staff are super friendly. Good selection of different beers and a fun menu. The pulled pork loaded fries are my recommendation. Hit the bar staff up for bar games; jenga, uno etc. Nice beer garden right on Salamanca place, great for people watching.
C. J.
Dont get the "world famous lobster roll' if u want a real meal. Nice as an entre' but dont expect to be satisfied for a main meal
S. F.
Can't recommend this place enough. The atmosphere was warm and inviting with a burning fire and live music. Music was southern pub food with pulled pork, fried chicken and more hot sauce I've seen on offer than anywhere else. Selection of beers was on point.
J. S.
Very authentic cozy pub in Hobart, small but comfortable. Log fire perfect for taking a whiskey on a winter's day.
D. J.
I was quite dissapointed i didn't have ice thrown at me by bar staff, mainly due to their poor aim, or my quick reflexes, apart from that, i wouldn't go anywhere else because the staff are unreal !!
A. B.
Good selection of local beers. Veggie burgers were tasty. Nice bar to visit on a Saturday morning when the Salamanca market is on.
M. K.
One of the best fish burgers i've ever had!
L. O.
Best pub on Salamanca! Excellent selection of drinks and the burgers and fries are the best! There's always plenty of outdoor seating and inside is cosy and comfortable. My go-to for an afternoon pint in the sun.
C. M.
Great local bar, very chilled. Good beer and spirit selection, bartenders know their way around a cocktail. Lot of history on the walls and above the bar.
J. a. K.
Great wings & fried haloumi. Fast service and nice outdoor seating. Staff were friendly and helpful with recommendations. Would visit again if in the area.
K. R.
Excellent selection of beer, top notch service, quality food, and the atmosphere is great for such a busy place. Go see for yourself. You won't regret it.
S. R.
A really nice pub. I like that they have cheap and cheerful options for food and drinks. But very decent quality. Cosy spot near the fireplace for winter. A winner.
A. G.
Lovely decor, service and great beers! Green beacon, fathom are a few we tried and we loved the moo brew! Yum!
J. B.
Crawled into a fireside seat for a beer after a chilly day. Met great people ate great food.
K. C.
Great place to relax with a beer or 2. Food is tasty.
a. j.
weekday lunch for three. yummy burger, but one was cold and one was undercooked. good range of tap beers. generic overzealous (when not on the phone) millennial bar girls.
E. C.
Bowl of mussels was very small comparative to price Served with underwhelming soup.
J. R.
I hope they keep the Reuben on the menu. One of the best I've had outside New York. Nice outdoor area. Good selection of beers
G. S.
Great lunch. I had fish 'n' chips which were excellent. The other people I was with enjoyed their meals too. Great location & the service was very good.
