While the food available is certainly unique, it's prepared exquisitely and is undeniably tasty. But the real star of the show is the wine list. Deep and extensive, you're bound to find something that both suits your taste and pairs with your meal. Lovely atmosphere, attentive staff, and definitely worth visiting.

We had a birthday celebration dinner there and the vegan food was just divine. High quality food and the wine selection was delightful. Beautiful cozy place.
One improvement, adding a vegan dessert to the menu. Apart from that just a amazing dining experience in the cbd. Photos don’t justify.

A relaxing culinary experience. The dim lighting creates a sensory withdrawal, allowing for the senses to focus on the flavours of the food and beverages.
We ordered 3 starter dishes and were quite full by the end of it. The highlight was the house-made bread - incredibly fresh and soft which went beautifully with the dip.

The wine list takes a while to get used to and although we dine out a lot, this place offers a great choice - don't be shy to ask the staff as they will gladly help. The Burrata is great way to start accompanied by the pickled vegetables. Servings are large and can accommodate 3 people per dish - when trying to calculate how much to order.

A most pleasant evening. Loved the vibe and great service.
The food was full of flavor and very well balanced. Our favourite had to be the stracciatella with oyster mushroom, the preserved chicken came closely second. Will definitely return to see what other delicious creations pops up onto the menu!
M. P.
Good food, wine list & venue. However, extremely overpriced. For example, we ordered the fish main for $47, and got a slice of fish about an inch thick.
Did I enjoy the flavours here, yes. But personally I feel like it was not worth the price paid.
J.
This place was delicious and the vibes are immaculate. Highlight of the show was the new mushroom and ricotta dish. Only problem with the meal was there was way too much salt in some of the dishes... :(

Embla is a cozy and intimate place to kick back and enjoy a very well priced meal. In particular, there are great pescatarian options for fish, nuts and seafood lovers. The choco misu was a nice dessert to round things off. Lovely & friendly staff as well.

Nice room, great staff, atmosphere was buzzing, good food, good wine, very pleasant overall. Melbourne comes back to life 🥂

Don't know where else to review their Embla Rooftop Cinema pop up! Space was so cute, super friendly & attentive staff, food was excellent!!!! So delicious! Pricey but definitely not your average type of food.
Loved the fish toast , focaccia and caramel popcorn was Mind-blowingly good!
For the movie, they even provided us ponchos when it looked cloudy. It started pouring heavily halfway through the movie and many of us 'evacuated' the area. The staff was kind enough to let us know they'd give us a voucher to come back again on another screening. How unexpected and kind!

I'm new in town (late 2021/2022) from London, a bit set in my ways and expecting the usual service and environment to at least feel a little at home. I just don't want to filter into the tourist train and feel in a chicken coup. I came here because we walked passed it on our way to a restaurant, peered in, its woody almost like the bottom of a wine barrel - I'm sold! The interior is simple; bare brick, stripped antique cabinets brought back to life from someone's vision, enough candle light to meet anyone who's looking for ' after work drinks for a small party, date night, any kind date, first, 2nd, break up! just don't come here from a funeral - in the nicest way :). The staff are adorable, attentive (on the right side), the heavenly smells they have coming from the kitchen, married with the candles and hand washes are just divine for anyone that appreciates cleanliness. Its just a nice place people. Absolute worth a visit.

Probably my favourite wine bar in the city. They don’t take reservations, so the trick is to try and come before the rush. I arrived before 6pm and got a table for my date. Excellent food, my top pick was the steak. Great selection of wines on offer. Great place for a date, maybe a little loud but definitely bookmarking this place.

I've been a big fan of chef Dave Verhuel ever since his days at Town Mouse. Of course, at embla, the food was amazing. Service and wine list was great too. Can't wait to visit again!

10 out of 10 every time. Embla never disappoints each time I visit be it for a long lunch, dinner or a quick drop in for a spritz, or martini with a little somethin 'somethin' to eat on my own. Staff are exceptional, food is devine and the drinks are always on point. Always bring my visitors to Melbourne here and they are always blown away :o)

Amazing takeaway lockdown date night. Thanks Embla team for a memorable dinner at home from you guys.
S. K.
The restaurant by far offers the best food in the town. Our office booked it for our Christmas lunch in a private dinning room. I must say that it was a great choice.
T. R.
Excellent food and atmosphere. Lots of alcohol, particularly wine selection.
This is more like a share plate restaurant and bar. This only thing I would criticise is the service speed. Staff is friendly and somewhat attentive, but things are a bit slow.
I still recommend you to try here. Come for the wine and food.
N. G.
Food was amazing, great dinning experience.
C. P.
Have to say I was very impressed the minute I walked in here. The vibe of the place really suits the setting and it's décor. The food itself although we could have ordered more was simply amazing in my opinion. We had the fish chicken and chickpea pancake. Although all of the dishes were amazing in their own way I couldn't go past the chickpea pancake as being my favourite. Great drinks menu and with a huge wine selection. Well worth the visit should you be in the city.
M. B.
Had a fantastic meal here just before lockdown 6.0. The service was fantastic, very attentive and helpful and the atmosphere was great. Every dish was beautifully presented and had well balanced flavours and textures. Some of the dishes were cooked in the wood oven, which created a subtle smokey flavour. Can't wait to come back again for a special occasion to try the rest of the menu.
P. E.
Had such a great time in this laid back wine bar. A friend and I went there for lunch and we chose a selection of dishes to share.
We started with a veal tartare which tasted amazing, then moved onto some earthy mushrooms 🍄 and half chicken. Everything is beautifully cooked. Would love to visit again but the prices are a bit prohibitive for a lunchtime treat. Approx $50 pp w one glass of wine
J. B.
Great food and service. Loved the table next to the kitchen, chefs really professional, precised and clean. We had a really good night here. The food was also stunning. Highly recommended Rainbow trout one of the best dish.
J.
Friendly staff, great food and delicious wines. One of the most impressive wine menus I have seen, Thanks for a wonderful night 🙌🎉

4.6. Embla is sensational.
Twosheds and friends dined here for lunch on a Thursday. In the 1990s and early 2000s, this place was a pretty good Italian pizza restaurant which we used to frequent. The premises have now moved up a serious notch. This is the type of place you walk into and feel immediately at home - dark wood interior with a lovely bar at the front and perfect lighting - I could have sat there all afternoon. It appeared as though that was exactly what a lot of people were doing! The staff are friendly, but the service is not obtrusive at all - and it is extremely efficient. I'd label the Embla food as modern Australian, French, Italian fusion, in a really good way.
We decided on the banquet, which did not include dessert. Beautiful bread arrived to start with a smoky, creamy butter. The friendly waiter advised me that the butter is smoked over oak wood chips in their own kitchen. It was amazing. We then started with blue eye trevalla carpaccio, followed by pickled cucumber sitting on a bed of dill feta, veal tartare with parsley and fresh peas and a chickpea pancake with globe artichoke topped with flat leaf parsley and parmesan (which Twosheds suspected to be Reggiano, the best of Italian parmesans). While all these dishes were fantastic, my highlight out of this super set of dishes was the chickpea pancake - gooey in middle and crisp on outside. It was a textural triumph.
Our main courses consisted of swordfish served with leeks, and half roasted chicken with a beautiful gravy and, as a side, asparagus sitting on a goats cheese sauce. The highlight here was the half roasted chicken. It was roasted to perfection, with crispy, flavoursome skin, and moist on the inside - the gravy a perfect accompaniment. One criticism here - the goats cheese was excellent, but the quite pungent nature of this particular goats cheese overpowered the delicate nature of the asparagus. The asparagus was also a little woody at the thick end - would have been nicer trimmed to spear only.
For dessert, we finished with coffee, alongside a chocolate and olive oil millefeuille and panna cotta with blueberries - two desserts shared between four of us. Both desserts were stunning. The standout was the beautiful panna cotta. Our lovely waitress advised us that the berries had been poached in their own syrup. The berries used to create the syrup were also presented with the poached items - dehydrated and raisin-like. The panna cotta had a beautiful sour finish on the palate - potentially made with sour cream - which finished off an amazing dessert. To boot, there was also crystallised elderflower incorporated in the panna cotta topping.
The only other criticism is possibly the wine list. While there were some beautiful wines on the list - which we drank (including a lovely Yarra Valley pinot noir) - we thought that the wine list could be expanded a little.
On the whole though, what a fabulous experience. I recommend giving it a try.

2.55 pm on a Saturday- it’s packed, when every other place in the CBD is half empty, but Georgie remembers our phone call from the morning (I missed the booking window) and gets me the last seat in the place. And, because she cares, she informs me immediately that the kitchen’s about to close for hot food so I need to get my order for Pippies in straight away. Wow! They are so delicious. I was told that this place freaking rocks and it sure does and so you must book. Waiters: Georgia and Harry- great staff- really competent, attentive and ever so personable. Great looking open kitchen. Wine, sparkling water, bread, main, dessert, coffee- 38 minutes. Done!
Update: my son took me for a totally indulgent 10 plate dinner at the bar facing the open kitchen. It’s just great food and a lot of fun watching those chefs manage that fiery inferno of an oven. Embla nails it every time.
A. L.
Embla deliver an excellent tapas menu, coupled with knowledgable and approachable staff. We were recommended a South Australian wine that married our tapas choices perfectly.
Food was amazing. Everything was light and clean. Personally, I enjoyed the wine so much, I'd go back and try another recommendation and pair food around wine.
Highly recommended. Book online before you visit. Embla got quite busy.
H. L.
Went there with a friend and sat at the bar. Customer service was great. Food and wine absolutely on point. All the dishes were amazing and great for sharing. We didn't select any mains as we were wanting something light but was still full after all said and done.

Wow Embla,
Amazing time with some friends at Embla, food was delicious, ambience and vibe was perfect, the wine list super extensive and vast, great service to round out a great night.
Would definitely come back!

Embla never fails to deliver beautiful and high quality produce.
The goats curd is delicious and so is the sourdough 🤤
I highly recommend the trout!
The ideal spot for a weeknight date or a cosy meal and wine with mates.
See you again soon...

Embla has carved it's place as one of the icons in Melbourne's dining scene. It's a refuge from the busy corporate life around the corner, a mecca for wine lovers, but most importantly, an incredible kitchen that has coaxed out the most amazing flavours out of even mundane ingredients.
I'm sure their mastery of the wood fire and ample use of fermentation has got lots to do with the latter. While the menu's constantly changing with the seasons, there are few mainstay's that are a must - their humble bread is some of Melbourne's best, the mouthwatering soured cucumbers, and who could miss out on their oh-so-juicy roast chicken. The dishes here can be deceivingly simple, but trust me, nothing is as it seems.
To match the marvelous food is an equally marvelous wine list. It's "naturally" inclined, but still covers a lot of ground (though you won't find any Penfold's here 😆). Think Raveneau, Overnoy, Valentini, Gentle Folk - cult classics to satisfy all you wine geeks. There are even well-cellared back-vintage bottles on the list, which are sadly rarities in Melbourne. For the more casual days, an extensive by-the-glass list is also available to drink from.
For me, Embla ticks all the boxes as an ideal wine bar. Clearly they didn't skimp on the consumables, but the ambiance and hospitality are reasons to come themselves. It's warm, welcoming, and familiar. Safe to say, I think it's a great place to eat, drink, and just hang out, right in the heart of Melbourne!
B. R.
A bit pricey but the food was amazing! The staff are friendly. I would recommend visiting the place for the food in itself :)

Never have I ever enjoyed dining on my own until I came to Embla. I sat at the bar overlooking the thrilling kitchen. The all male-run restaurant staff helped me choose my dish (chickpea pancake) and wine.
Watching the chefs do their thing was so exhilarating and enjoyable! Needless to say, with the ambiance of the kitchen, the restaurant itself, the staff, music and awesome wine, the dish I ordered was impeccable.
It was flavorful, different, beautiful and just super yummy. I highly recommend this place for a hot date or just to do as I did and sit at the bar. Thank you Embla for this wonderful experience ❤️
J. K.
Great food, great service, great experience all round.
C. L.
Great little wine bar / restaurant for the dedicated. Bookings recommended.
Decided to smash through the wine list in an afternoon - bad idea.
J. P.
Really enjoyed this spot. The cucumbers, as simple as they sound, were my favorite item on the menu! Chickpea pancake was also quite tasty. Husband loved the tartar as well. Excellent service particularly the hostess
G. D.
My google searching suggested it was mainly a wine bar, and look I'm sure it excels at that. But my god the food was absolutely amazing, I'll be honest it didn't sound that great reading the menu, although it was just perfection and I was pleasantly surprised.
E.
Honestly couldn't think of a criticism for the experience we had at this restaurant. Food was excellent, atmosphere was great. We were in a little nook upstairs so if I was nitpicking I'd say be were a little out of sight of the staff but they were also visably busy so did a good job and the temperature ran a little hot but it is the middle of winter!
J. H.
We were stranded in Melb due to a flight cancellation, so we were so glad that Embla is open on the usual Mon night restaurant graveyard. We were going to have a drink and snack and move on, but it was as nice as previously, so we settled in for the night. Great food, wine and service. Only slight drawback was the lighting was very low that night, making it hard to read menus and best appreciate the food. Had fun trying new wines.is realy fun and enjoy with embla bar.
C. K.
This was the best restaurant I visited in Melbourne on my last trip! Love the buzz and vibe of the place. Best to sit at the bar and watch the chefs use their unique oven!
P. S.
Currently my favorite place in Melbourne, if you can get a table overlooking the kitchen; it's a great show. Try their selection of Natural wines and Sake.
R. A.
The food was amazing and the service from Anna and Russell was amazing so helpful and friendly! Loved it !!!
C. G.
This was a top recommendation. The food was incredible, loved their wine concept and selection and had a lovely time toute seul sitting at the bar watching the chefs and their craft. Highly recommend this place for dinner and some vinos but get there early because it fills up quick
S. Y.
My husband and I had the best dining experience at Embla. The food was exceptional (the blue cheese souffle is a must-try) and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. Will definitely be back very soon!
W. L.
Partner and I had a lovely birthday dinner — definitely don’t miss out on the veggie dishes, they were some of the absolute highlights.
Edit: we returned in 2021 for yet another birthday dinner — we were a little restrained because we were on a budget due to the pandemic, but we wanted to eat everything on the menu 🤣. Everything we ordered (the snapper, the duck parfait toast, the swordfish — omg, so good — the broccoli and the beef carpaccio) was absolutely delicious. My seafood-avoidant partner is now a convert! Thank you for the excellent service and wine as well! You made our night.
M. S.
Enjoyed an amazing experience at this superb wine bar. We were seated upstairs and the decor was very warm and welcoming. All the staff were genuinely friendly and knowledgeable. We tasted a couple of wines by the glass and the greco was an amazing discovery! All of the dishes we shared were delicious combinations of flavours - impossible to choose a favourite. I have been fortunate to travel extensively (except of course for last year) but Melbourne remains a firm favourite because of the standard and quality of dining establishments such as this!
M. M.
The atmosphere and vibe was great, the perfect lighting and table set-up. The food was really nice (some dishes on the salty side) and portions were very reasonable. The staff were nice and polite but not very attentive. The kitchen was also be a bit too slow. Overall a nice experience, but you should allow an extra hour or so for the experience.
Z. W.
We had a really good night here. So many nice wines to try, delicious food and really good service. Would definitely return again soon.
P. Y.
I went there for a bday celebration and was seated upstairs. The service was excellent. The ambience and decor felt like we were the only table there even though it was full house. The wine selection was very extensive and every dish was actually delicious. The highlight would be their steak, tender and juicy and so very tasty. Would definitely go back!
D. L.
Everything from the decor and architecture to the genuine smiles of the staff members compliments an even greater cuisine. Flavours are distinct, there is respect of the ingredients used.
Great to see this sophisticated yet affordable type of hospitality appearing in Melbourne.
S. H.
Great wine with delicious food and super friendly service. Highly recommended.
I. J.
Bustling wine bar with a well-formed list and some very attractive small plates, cheeses and select main courses. Friendly staff. Informal - best place is the bar or the window since otherwise it’s a shout across a table to be heard.
G. R.
Delicious food and friendly helpful staff. Great wines as well.
A. R.
Had dinner with my friend there another night and absolutely loved it. Food was amazing (cucumbers and killing it), very thoughtful wine list and their team guided us through it. The atmosphere is fun and inviting, the service was on a very high level, timely and accommodating. Will be back
M. P.
Cute bar and table service restaruant. Easy meeting place for friends. Tight but diverse food and drinks selection. Attentive staff even when busy. Great place for an extended dinner with good friends.
A. J.
A value for money food experience. Bavette Steak Recommended, and the Lamb. Good ambience, simple food. Must try.
M. R.
Excellent food, wine list and service. However it’s very expensive for the price. I’m from Perth and people from Melbourne say it’s expensive there. Not any more. Prices here have gone up significantly and the value is not what it was in places like this. $46 for 3 thin slices of pork 😯 that’s crazy!!! Delicious sure, but that should be $36 if that. Food for two of small serves and 4 glasses of wine was $220. 😶
N. M.
Went for lunch on a Tuesday. I think I just don't get this place. Seating was comfortable, but I think if the other tables were occupied it would feel very cramped due to the tables being quite close together. Decor is dark and gloomy. We were left with the menu for quite a while - drinks came pretty quickly - and when we finally started ordering we were then informed that it's a sharing menu (and that they hadn't had their delivery of beef yet) so we had to rethink our ordering plan. We ordered swordfish (a little bland) and chicken (very salty). The food was ok. $93 for two meals and two drinks for lunch. The music was terrible, some sort of jazz/rock influenced stuff. We left feeling like we weren't the target market for Embla.
D. M.
Lovely wine bar. Excellent staff, great wines by the glass, varied regularly. Really tasty snacks (sour cucumbers is my favourite). And a great soundtrack playing in the background. Just go...
N. S.
Great small plates for sharing. Good wine list.
P. M.
Simply amazing. Great food, really food vibe, friendly staff. Drinks came in a very timely fashion. Super filling!

Had an exceptional meal at Embla today. Have been several times and it never disappoints. The seasonal changes to the menu were superb and it was on point. Well recommended.
T. F.
Gorgeous food, even better wine. Lovely ambiance and the staff are super friendly and knowledgeable. Seem to end up here every time I'm in the area - and always recommend it to friends!
L. C.
I've visited twice now post-iso, and relieved to report that the food is still clever and satisfying. There is something for everyone in the wine list and service is gracious and helpful. So pleased to see embla survive and thrive.
A. L.
Great atmosphere with delicious food. I keep going back for sure!
A. B.
Amazing food and very handsome lads cooking it
S. A.
I had to make it obvious that the old, rich, white dude I was with wasn’t there for ‘those reasons’. I think I communicated this well, whilst enjoying the wonderful food, drinks and service. At least I think I did. Anyway, enough about me. Hi, how are you?
Y. H.
One of my favourites in Melbourne. Great selection of wines by the glass. Hapuka, is a must try dish, simply delicious. I will definitely come back, fully recomendable.
I.
Delicious food, service excellent, really nice ambiance.
T. Z.
Some of the best food and service I've ever experienced in Australia.
The chickpea pancakes are a must, takes on so much smokey flavour from the wood oven. Wine list also extremely solid.
J. B.
The discrepancy between food and service is hilarious- the chefs working with great attention to provide astounding food, while the wait staff plod around uncaringly. You should not be surprised to see them drinking the cellar clean while you sit empty-glassed.
S. J.
Great place for a quick drink or if you want to dine in the food is very good, wine list is biodynamic based and quite a nice range. Perfect place for a date
W. X.
Really well-presented tasty food and very good selection of wines. Nice cozy atmosphere. Great experience.
A. G.
Love it here - excellent food and drinks. Staff are always super welcoming and offer great service. A little bit pricey but you get what you pay for. Hence why we keep going back!
S. N.
Natural wine (and others) and fantastic food. Always a great atmosphere and the team are warm and engaging
b.
a very relaxed, calming atmosphere. lamb was okay for the price but the tiramisu was phenomenal!!
N. Y.
The food is absolutely amazing, great service too...
A. C.
Cozy, casual foodie bar. Great place for a quick snack and a drink or two.
O. J.
Great vibes, great wine and good food.
Although we only had wine by the glass the wine list is very impressive.
Food is really good, we had: soured cucumber (excellent), goats curd (excellent), chickpea pancake (the parsley was a bit overbearing and the pancake was a bit burned, but still a good dish) and finally the clams (great but be ready for a “heavy” dish).
Service is good if at times a bit slow but we were there during Friday lunch so understandable.

First proper meal out after lockdown and the only way to go was Embla. Every course made me think 'this is the best thing I've ever tasted' and staff were a universal delight. Plus, that wine list! Amazing. Thank you
M. W.
Amazing staff. Amazing food.
Super attentive and friendly staff who made it an experience to remember. Fully catered for my weird dietary needs to ensure that I had no impacts at all. Great banter and I couldn’t recommend this place more. The owners should feel real proud to have the front and back of house staff the do. Thanks to all that helped👍🏻👍🏻
A. G.
Lovely wine bar with a busy and exciting atmosphere. Nice music, had a great catch-up with a friend where we could chat freely and not be able to hear the table next to us.
Had some of their delicious food as well, paired well with the wine. Not surprised they are a hatted venue!
Amazing wine list, even by glass. The list by the glass has an exceptional European red wine array. Staff are friendly and informative. Will be making this a regular catch-up space.

Visiting Melbourne means dining well. Though not strictly speaking a restaurant - its a wine bar - the food is restaurant standard. As with a number of establishments, bookings aren't possible at night so its pot luck. Fortunately we didn't have to wait long. The ambience is fabulous, the service was excellent. The food was always a surprise - do not miss the chickpea pancake. We also had pork jowl which was marvellous. The drink list is very eclectic. A great buzzy place - do go!
m. m.
If close friend’ visited in mel, I'd like to recommend this restaurant!
O. G.
We waited for over an hour to get in but it was worth it. Sour cucumber dish 👍👌 grilled chicken👍 and more. Menu is designed to share mostly. So try everything 😊.
A. J.
The food here was on the whole, stunning. Great flavours and perfectly cooked. Aside from the treacle tart dessert, which was a bit overcooked and a little underwhelming. Great wines and good service. Main concern is that it was just very hard to get full on the portions... Probably a bit pricey if you are in need of a real feed!

We had a semi business lunch here and was extremely impressed with everything. Service was great, wine choices spectacular and the food was outrageously good.
We went the shared menu, and unlike every other place in Melbourne, they didn't just have a variation of the same menu. The food that came out was original, tasty, plentiful and just overall impressive.
The roast chicken with creamed sweet corn...!!!
D. L.
A wonderful intimate setting, great wine list, friendly and welcoming staff and beautiful food! Can’t wait to go back.
A. D.
My partner and I went there for dinner.
This place is small, busy and loud but super cosy, with good vibes.
There is an open kitchen which is great if you want to know how the plates are made and served.
The wine list has a lot of options and good references, for everyone’s taste.
The food is also really nice and fresh but careful the portions are not that big for some of the plates. 2 starters and 2 mains to share are perfect for two people.
Thank you for this lovely moment we will be back !😊
S. L.
Chocolate ripple misu was outstanding
L. H.
Every drink and dish I had at this place was fantastic, all the wines are natural or organic/biodynamic (and fantastic) and the nibbles were all awesome. No idea what it's like for a full meal (if that's even possible). Our waiter was really friendly and engaging, and we even chatted to one of the Chefs, Joe, who was super lovely.
R. M.
Fantastic bar a vin with amazing food
D. O.
Very cool wine bar great selection! Food looked amazing but didn't eat here however what to go back and try some

Wine list absolutely off the hook + most beautiful pork chop I have ever laid eyes on.

Delicious food (with great variety, and veg dishes), plus solid service :D

I know everyone raves about it but i was a little frustrated. Firstly, yes they have an amazing wine list. However the options by the glass are limited and are agreeable to one end of the spectrum (fruit driven, not too much oak). If that's your thing then great. Also, I wouldn't go if anyone in your group isn't a wine lover and prefers a cocktail. The food is really tasty however again it is a fairly small menu, which might leave picky eaters scratching for more.
A. L.
This was highly recommended and we were not disappointed. The wines are great, but the food was absolutely outstanding. In particular the roasted pine mushrooms (WOW WOW WOW) and the cucumber dish. Waited about 20 minutes to be seated but it was worth it.
N. G.
Difficult to fault this place. Exceptional wine list and attentive, knowledgeable service. Our waiter recognised our interest in drinking champagne and recommended some unique and delicious bottles. The food was also superb. To top it off, there is a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.
J. C.
Interesting and tasty food, great wine list. You need to arrive early to be assured of table.
Return visit to Embla for lunch 24/7/19 So Good!!! The food is interesting and tasty. A lot of thought has gone into the menu. Excellent service 👍
A. A.
Food was incredibly flavoursome, exceeding our already high expectations and the environment was cozy & romantic. Highly recommend the chick pea pancake, kale salad (much better than it sounds!) and the chicken (best chicken we’ve had in terms of juicyness and the accompanying sauce).
The only negative is that you can’t book, however I won’t deduct a star for this as it’s the new norm. This is now our second favourite restaurant in Melbourne after Chin Chin.
J. S.
Embla is a great place for a date or to bring a friend for an intimate catch up.
It's nice and cosy inside - perfect for the winter months, and the wine selection is amazing.
Service is good and fast!
Food was amazing too. Smaller plates, nothing too substantial, but tasty! My fave was the chickpea pancake!
Y. a. D. T.
Went here with girlfriends for early dinner. Great service, nice atmosphere, outstanding food. Chickpeas pancake, zucchini with walnuts, duck pate and lamb were to die for. The squid was a bit chewy for our liking. Interesting fresh Rose, somewhat reminded us of Sangria. Definitely the place to visit!
K. L.
This was my first visit and I'll definitely be going back. The food was delicious and they had a good drink selection. Staff were knowledgeable and the decor had a nive cosy feel about it.
A. D.
The food is absolutely delicious and we should know, we basically ordered everything on the menu. The wine list is huge but manageable and we were able to pick a great variety of wines to enhance our experience. Staff were great and we had a fantastic time
K. M.
Beautiful tapas menu, amazing dishes and flavour combinations. Extensive wine list, nothing too expensive.
E. S.
Killer 👌 been here 3 times now and always awesome. Really recommend this place
G. J.
This is a lovely little wine bar.
My wife and I went here for a few drinks pre-dinner.
We sat at the bar and went through an extensive wine list and chose some lovely reds.
Service was great and very friendly.
Good location and we would go back!!!
C. R.
My new favourite, atmosphere was perfect, dimmed though with ample light. European quality service, very impressed with my coat taken and returned the minute I started leaving.
Oh and watching them cook our food, was so much fun, making it a true delight to eat wonderful and simple food.
They then closed the night with a delicious french wine, that match our request beautifully
C. B.
Food was incredible. Waiter helped us with our wine choices, and was spot on. Service was excellent.
S. B.
I don't drink (this is a wine bar), but I read about this place in AFR. The wait list was about an hour, but it was worth it. The staff were very warm, welcoming and accommodating. They were helpful with the food choices. The variety was minimal but it was delicious. The portions could have been slightly bigger, but it's not very expensive, so that's good. The sourdough bread and cheese was to die for.
What could be better? Shorter wait time and bigger menu.
R. W.
Absolutely perfect for a cheeky glass of vino and a cheese indulge fest after work in the city! Staff were really helpful, lighting wasn’t fantastic but that’s part of the ambience. Couldn’t fault the wine list and cheese selection that night. Also the chickpea pancake was delicious as a more substantial meal.
N. J.
This place is a ripper, the Sunday lunches they do are fantastic, you get well fed and they are seriously delicious. Extensive wine list that seems daunting at first but the staff are super chill and able to make great suggestions. Great place to drop in for a cocktail also, really nice vibe inside and the decor is on point, it’s modern but cosy. Definitely check this place out.
s. h.
Beautiful and tasty food cooked by amazing chefs, in a welcoming yet sophisticated environment. Wonderful wine list and super helpful staff who make the experience a great one! It gets extremly busy on a friday, be prepared to wait a couple of hours for a table but well worth the wait! Fab place to wine and dine with friends or family.

My partner took me here for 'Something different' on a trip to Melbourne and we entered to a very busy restaurant. The server was a cheerful man who allowed us to choose our seating out of what was available (in front of the bar or in front of the kitchen) and my partner chose the kitchen.
Now, I thought that a chefs job is hard enough without people watching, and because I'm a social antichrist, I kept inadvertently locking eyes with the chefs at random intervals (sorry guys)
Contrary to how I manage being observed while working (hint. Not well) the chefs were so engaging and happy to provide advice on the menu whilst still pouring out plate after plate to the full room. One particular chef recommended the trout (which we didnt get as my partner doesn't eat fish, and believe me sitting in front of her after choosing differently from her clearly professional recommendation will haunt me to the end of my days) and even provided details about the dish she had just plated up for us in between her next orders, which was the Chicken rillettes.
Another of the chefs brought the burratta entree and listed each item with a smile before seamlessly returning to the fast-paced kitchen.
Both entrees were incredible, and seemed to have more flavour than the plate should allow.
For the main, we had the pork jowel, which was also hand delivered by a chef and clearly outlined each item making up the dish.
My god, this thing fell apart in your mouth, and was coupled with a side of heirloom tomatoes with horseradish (a recommendation from the waiter, I believe his name was Lorenzo, who could have sold me a pint of bees at this point, his recommendations are Oprah level)
The meal portions were perfectly sized to taste and share and still sufficient enough to make me question my decision to wear skinny jeans.
The atmosphere was great, our waiter was very attentive and the food was incredible, it's obvious these people care about what they do.
Thanks for having us.
D. K.
What a great wine bar. Extraordinary attention paid to selection of wines and food. V knowledgeable staff. If u think u r an expert on wine, this place will most certainly challenge. When was the last time you had a dry white Palomina from Jerez? Will be back.
H.
I took my sister to the vegan Sunday lunch Embla run a couple of weeks ago for her birthday. The food was beautiful. Best vegan food I’ve had. And the wine great. The only downfall was we ordered coffee at the end and there were no vegan milk options. This wasn’t an issue for me however it was a little disappointing for my sister who is a vegan, and we were attending a vegan lunch. I assume this was an oversight and didn’t stop us enjoying the meal, just would have been a nice touch at a vegan lunch special.
T. E.
Great ambience. Quirky wine selection. The home baked bread is divine. The only disappointment was the bavette as it was lacking flavour and the vegetables were way over steamed. The wipped cod roe was a true delight though.
i. i.
Good vibe, good food, great wine
T. M.
I absolutely fell in love with the creme caramel from the supper menu its so decadent and delicious. I paired my little treat with a nice sake-eske cocktail who h was super refreshing and complimented the fig really well.
J. M.
Consistently great food (and impressive wine list) that keeps me coming back. Never met an Embla dish I didn’t love.
J. S.
Without a doubt my favourite wine bar in Melbourne. A very well curated list of wines. I do not consider myself an expert and much prefer to just ask the staff to suprise me with something wild and different. They always nail the selection and explain the provenance in great detail with lots of passion. Educational and delicious 😉🍷 the food is incredible, focussing on quality produce and producers bringing out the most flavour from every ingredient. Finally if your a fan of craftsmanship, the bar is beautifully built.
C. C.
I had a truly wonderful evening. The bartender chose beautiful and unique wines for me that matched my tastes perfectly. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Thank you!
A.
Huge selection of wine in a dark whisky bar atmosphere. Knowledgeable staff were happy to talk through the range and make individual suggestions. Great for an intimate end to your evening.
A. D.
I ate here six months ago so to come back and find that the food is as good as ever was fantastic. Wine list is interesting and the service was awesome. Can't wait to eat here again when I'm back in Melbourne.
K. Q.
Great for a big business lunch that doesn't leave you feeling stuffed! Went here on a business lunch and we had the set menu which had a ton of veggie based dishes as well as a couple of seafood (calamari & snapper) dishes and a main of roast chicken. Everyone loved the food and while it was a lot, it was so light that it didn't leave us feeling heavy. If you love bread like me you'll LOVE their sourdough that is served with creme fraiche. The dishes were simple and built around quality ingredients, yet different enough to be interesting. The only let down was that our vegetarian group member didn't get anything different when the rest of us got the seafood and chicken, they just offered to bring an extra of any of the veggie dishes we were already served.
S. D.
Only had drinks, but the place had a cool atmosphere and setting.
Staff are lovely.
L. H.
The food here is absolutely sublime. The service impeccable, the atmosphere is cozy and unassuming, and the food is far too divine for how affordable it is. I was almost suspicious of the absence of pretentiousness that inevitably comes with this level of gourmet expertise. 10/10 will return and smash more of that toffee ice cream and peach.
R. C.
Absolutely fantastic food, service, and atmosphere. They really know their wine too. Great list, and it wont break the bank. This place is a perfect wine bar. Great date place.
C. W.
Elegant decor. Lots of bar space as well as tables. Wines by the glass are mostly natural but impressively selected. Oysters were very fresh. I had a few dishes (soured cucumbers, wood fired broccoli, raw beef) that were all presented as a main ingredient perched on top of a dipping sauce. All excellent except the broccoli was too burnt for my taste. Friendly and fun staff. It's places like this that make Melbourne such an amazing city.
S. A.
Lovely wine bar in the center of Melbourne. The food and the wine were very good. Doesn’t get 5 stars because the red wine was to cold (came directly from the fridge🙄) and the price of AUD 56 for two glasses of wine, a piece of bread and a small plate of meat, was a bit overpriced.
D.
Great service, amazing food. Not pretentious in the slightest, we felt so welcome here and enjoyed everything we ordered. It couldn't have been more perfectly cooked. Would definitely recommend.
T. K.
Great venue and the sourdough bread was life changing. However the wine was hit and miss. We had some lovely wines and some bloody awful cheaper French ones. You don't expect that at a place like this. The sommelier dropped the ball on that one. Also, you'll spend *a lot* of money here. Also, marked down for overtly asking for a tip - not appropriate in well-paid Australia.
M. S.
Nice bar, good cheese selection and the food was on point. The wine choice was good, and the bar staff had an in depth knowledge of their wines but didn't sound pretentious or make me feel dumb when they explained the wines.
K. L.
First post lock down meal and it didn't disappoint. Incredible staff, wonderful atmosphere and outstanding food and wine.
M. F.
Embla might advertise itself more as a wine bar but the food is also very good. I couldn't get a booking in the evening but a table came up within about 30 minutes. Food, wine, service, ambience all meld into a great night out.
M. J.
Superb wine bar with a great relaxed atmosphere and knowledgeable staff. I've only eaten a handful of items from the food menu, but all were excellent. I'm looking forward to my next visit.
T. O.
In terms of ambience, wine and execution of food I would rate this higher, but food value was low. One tube of calamari for $26? One rather small piece of high quality roast chicken for $37. Delicious, but really not much more than a breast. The portions were just too small.
T.
Probably my favourite place in Melbourne. Consistly awesome food, service and wine. Knowledgeable staff will help you order if you do choose to. Menu shifts seasonally which keeps things fresh. Amazing vibe as well so you can really get lost in time at embla..
S. N.
Following number 1 ranking, I had to try Embla, and ended up here on Friday. Well, what a treat, staff are friendly, good mix of business people and foodies. To drink, I highly recommend the Giallo, to eat, you have to try the Roast Chicken. Price is super reasonable for this style of restaurant, we ate and drank very well for $150. Definitely a new favorite, but remember to book due to the small venue size.
A. E.
Delicious food, great selection of items to share, and amazing and friendly service. We were seated at the bar, and although the place was filled to the brim, our waiter took the time to suggest menu items to try, and recommend what goes well with what, amd served us in a timely fashion with a warm smile.
Usually super crowded as it is very popular, even during the week, so be prepared to wait or go a bit early.
J. P. (.
A great place for a few vinos and some fabulous well- thought-out share plates. The ambiance is wonderfully mood-filled and inviting. A seat at the bar suited us well, and is recommended especially as Eleanor is the perfect host. Her recommendations and knowledge of all things food and drink is superb. I would highly recomend the duck as it was outstanding, the flathead and the terrine (my God) it was insane. And definitely try the raspberry
eau de vie as a digestive. It's a great way to finish the experience.
S. t.
Got soured cucumber, black sourdough (!), and the Swiss cheese board. Moved to the grilled chicken and swordfish. Finished with the burnt pear. And got a Victorian Shiraz. All absolutely delicious (chicken was a tiny bit too salty for my liking), but def something I recommend for another couple! Will be back for sure. Also really wonderful staff : ) worth the wait folks!
A. B. B.
Absolutely my favourite place to come and eat, lunch, dinner and cocktails in all of Melbourne
S. C.
Was greeted at door with friendly” have you made a reservation” one liner , was only surpassed by the plethora of choices on the to share menu which was a pleasure to deliberate over amongst friends, can recommend the snapper was perfectly cooked and the to share portion left us all dying for more.... all washed down with the cheapest rum you can find in nicaragua! would recommend for business lunch meetings if you don’t particularly like your clientele
B. E.
Only had a couple a couple of small dishes but they were amazing (the fields mushrooms were especially great). The staff were also very helpful with wine selection. I am keen to go back again
S. G.
Great place for good quality, natural, organic & biodynamic wines.
A nice selection of tapas style dishes to go alongside makes this my favourite bar in Melbourne.
Try the Unkel Sangiovese and courgette with pine nuts - delicious!
L. R.
Great selection of wines
B. L.
New favourite restaurant. Amazing food, wine and service. What more could you ask for?
V. V.
The epitome of Melbourne - amazing, unique wines, bar food so good it has been given a Chefs Hat (Australian equivalent to a Michelin Star) and a fit-out that sums up Melbourne perfectly.
Can't book for dinner so get there early or wait for a table - and stand by for a restaurant upstairs. And if you like what these guys do, remember their other restaurant The Town Mouse in Carlton.
J. H.
What fantastic food and service. Our bartender was beautifully relentless in keeping each of the 8 people at the bar happy, fed, watered and entertained. The food was delicious and i can't wait to visit again!
M. A.
Favourite restaurant in Melbourne at the moment. Great wines and delicious food that is interesting, but not over complicated or trying to do too much. Cosy and welcoming atmosphere makes it even better!
M. E.
Nice ambience and a good selection of interesting wines by the glass and small plates
D. D.
Such a great place, very friendly service staff, the food was phenomenal and each staff member was attentive, polite, friendly, funny, kind and more. Highly recommended!
C. M.
Amazing. Amazing. Amazing first experience! Will be back!
T. G.
Great selection. Nice finger foods. Good service. Nice place for a quick bite and catch up
A. F.
Great food and wine, plus very good service. Highly recommend the beef cheeks and freshly baked bread. A great combination for a cold Melbourne winter’s day.
D. B.
Wasn't overly impressed with the staff (male, Asian background) that did not come across as being helpful on what brands of gin were available. Perhaps better educated staff needed before I return.
M. J.
A lovely wine bar with an assortment of food. Service was great and very friendly.
The ambience is great especially if you want to bring a date.
M. S.
Amazing signature food and ambience with a friendly staff. They don't do bookings for less than 6 people so go early or just chill at the bar while you wait for a table. A must go if you're in Melbourne.
R. D.
Lovely wine bar/restaurant. Great selection of Pinot Noir, but lots of others too close from. Food looked good though we didn't try it.
J. E.
Excellent wine bar full of beautiful people that wont let me in. No seriously it seems to be full of 9s and 10s ;) excellent food and drinks has a well earned reputation. Worth a visit to impress.
R. W.
I think I’ve nearly sampled every dish on the menu and each dish has been above expectations!! The wine and service is great too.
G. E.
Wow very Funky bar. Great wood fire cooked food. Great menu. Really good for after work drinks but also well lit for a romantic dinner. Highly recommend
B.
Wow. Let me just begin by saying, fantastic service, great knowledge of the wines (which meant I didn’t need to think, just drink). First time here and will definitely come back.
R. K.
It's really a great experience at Embla. The staff are lovely and the food id amazing. Thanks
J. P.
Amazing food, service and wine recommendation. We were served promptly as we didn’t have a great deal of time. Highly recommended
J. M.
Great small plates menu and interesting drinks menu.. only had time for a late night bite here... sat at the bar and had a few nibbles and drinks including an amazing brown rice sake.
J. S.
Fantastic food, fantastic wine list, fantastic staff. Highly recommended.
D. s.
Cute place. Bartender was pouring wine back from a glass into bottle. Very light wine pours. She was not very friendly. Poured wine and disappeared. Had to track her down to pay.
T. L.
Excellent wine list, great food but best of all outstandingly friendly, humourous, professional and irreverent staff. Total pro's.
A. K. (.
Chic wine bar in the CBD from the owners of Town Mouse. Small dishes to share with interesting vegetarian options. Great roast chicken and fish dish. Sophisticated dining
J. L.
Wonderful service and great food!
R. Z.
Get in early because you will be risking getting a spot. There wasn't a massive list of wines by the glass for a wine bar, however it does the job. The food was very tasty. I will be back.
N. A.
definitely digging the vibe. amazing selection on the menu. would definitely be back
P. N.
Visited embla for the first time the place is easy to find, the food is worth every penny the octopus was to die for and the lamb was melting on the mouth had a good birthday dinner here. The service is commendable and would love to visit again
G. L.
Great place. Amazing wines and simply beautiful food. Staff know their product, which is excellent.
P. S.
In love. With the wine list, service and delicious sharing plates. Definately worth the wait. Just the right spot for Friday night drinks and eats.
R. W.
Absolutely beautiful food, great beer / Wine selection. Great friendly staff who could not do enough for us
We will be back.
C. W.
Very good food and supercosy place. But extremely loud at the end. They cranked the music so loud that we left early because you couldn't talk.
S. B.
Gorgeous ambiance, knowlageable staff and a great wine list and by the glass selection.
B. H.
Million and one places to eat in melbs that a top notch. This is definitely near the top of the list. And the wine list is up there as well. Eat the corn. Even if you hate corn. Just eat the corn. Mum said so.
A. S.
Great wine selection and awesome food. You know a place is good when Gordon Ramsay recommends it!
T. R.
One of my fave Melbourne restaurant's. Perfect spot to hide away from the city hustle and bustle. Staff are amazing too
N. S.

Small and expensive describes this place quite well. Post work, suit or pre theatre ish type good. Travellers, not gonna like it! Waiting staff can be a little brusque!
A. N. G.
Great selection of organic and minimal itervention wines served by very insoles fable staff. The food selection is also great.

We tried 3 nice new beers, special preparation of the tapas, interesting, decent price, we shared between 4, lighting was nice

Love it. Great drinks list and all the food we had was spectacular.
A. M.
Great wine list, fantastic menu, great service. This better be on your restaurant bucket list.
S. D.
Its like instant karma, an impossible ideal till it happens. Embla is quintessential quixotic, that perfect ideal that is completely unrealistic... Until you are there, sipping, nibbling and indulging the pleasure of life. Idealisticaly, practically, perfect.
Y. S.
Good wine bar.. Just had a drink... Did not eat, but the menu looked interesting..

It was a nice layout but the music was excessively loud for a wine bar, to the point where it drowned out all conversation and we had to leave.

Great selection of wines. Very knowledgeable and great recommendation. Would definitely be back.

Stylish place with a good vibe, friendly and efficient service, interesting and delicious food, and an unusual selection of wines.

N. M.
Delicious food and wine. Friendly and attentive service. Nice vibe.

Way overrated, oyster wasn't super fresh, the snapper carpaccio came with "tendons", wine lost ok but not exceptional for a wine bar
B. S.
We had a fabulous time with our friend from England. Lovely glass of wine and something to nibble on.
H. S.
Delicious small plates and a very good wine menu.
