It's not often I go bar hopping in Melbourne however I came across this extension of Chin Chin, loved the name and theme of the business so decided to check it out. Entered via the alleyway which wasn't manned so approached the bar ourselves, showed our vax status and was seated up the back.
They have a large variety of alcoholic options, and a few cocktail recipes as well. Staff were prompt to take our orders and we were given water whilst we waiting. The payment terminal offered us to tip the staff which I'm unsure about however overall a nice experience.

we had drinks at the bar, nice vibe, great service

This food is very good, although it is a little bit pricy. I definitely recommend the coconut rice and BBQ Lamb with eggplant. They were delicious!!! If I lived in Melbourne I would definitely come back to this place because it is so good. The service and staff is lovely and very efficient. The staff knew the dishes very well and were very polite. They explained the dishes very well and were very attentive. They checked on any food allergies or dietary requirements we had without us even having to ask !
D. C.
Amazing cocktails but the staff made the visit! Our waiter was extremely knowledgeable and offered service beyond what we expected. There is nothing better than bar staff who know their job and can guide you through the very extensive meny with ease. Highly recommended for a drink before some amazing food upstairs at Chin Chin!
K. C.
The food is great but not traditional Thai. The taste is sweeter and less spicy.
Service is okay as we waited for over 10 minutes to pay.
We also saw one waiter ate our leftover after packing. Something unbelievable in a popular restaurant.
S. C.
I have never had a bad dish, even when I let my husband choose something that sounds boring it turns out to be amazing - the red curry salmon for instance. The cocktails are interesting and taste great. I always go at odd times so have never had to wait, which is a huge brag in Melbourne.
D. S.
A funky, arty Asian restaurant (and bar) that sums up Melbourne. Has food that will leave you dazzled, and wanting more. Not low priced.
Pros:
Very good customer service. Note, and surprise: the waiters/waitresses work for tips.
Food (I had the 'dry curry soft shelled crab') was unlike anything I've tried. It was weird in a good way... I think.
Atmosphere was very lively. "Busy".
Cons:
Can get busy, so expect to wait to be seated.
L. S.
After hearing so many good reviews about Chin Chin I have tried to dine there a few times, but the wait has always been in excess of 40 minutes. On this occasion we were lucky enough to be seated immediately and weren't disappointed. With such a wonderful menu we decided to ask our waitress to pick for us and were delighted with the choices. The food was melt in the mouth delicious and incredibly moorish. I loved the relaxed dining atmosphere and sitting in front of the dessert chefs watching them work. We paid about $130 for three dishes, two desserts and a cocktail jug. I would highly recommend Chin Chin and will be going back as soon as I get chance.

GoGo Bar is the funky cocktail bar connected to Cha Cha's and let me say, it's just as rad! I didn't order any food but we definitely grabbed a cocktail and they were next level! Mine had a Coconut Mint cream on top so as well as being strong it was really smooth without any gross after tastes. You definitely get what you pay for here so be prepared to spend a little bit of cash!
Very, very cool spot.
M. C.
Awesome food and drinks. I booked at group of 10 people which was fine, yet they said nothing ever about splitting us up across 2 tables. Not the end of the world, but the whole intention of the dinner was for 10 people to get to know one another. Not telling patrons when they book is just f*^kin rude.
K. W.
Fusion Thai food, nice spin on some dishes. Extremely long wait times and does not do take-away. Wait time estimation isn't correct from day to day. Staff are very laid back and are not tentative until you get a table. Food has great flavour.
M. S.
Great Asian food. Had "Build your own spring rolls" as a starter - genius idea and tasted phenomenal. Busy place though - we got there at 5:30pm and had no problem getting a table, people coming in later had a much longer wait. Very cool vibe - can't recommend enough.
P. S.
The staff here are Very very helpful!
I rolled my ankle and scraped up my knees when walking down the alley to the bar, and they ensured that I had all my needs catered for then proceeded to serve me the most delishious cocktails.
Very very good service. Very friendly and compassionate staff 👌
J. G.
Besides the wait, it was a thoroughly enjoyable evening at Chin Chins. The downstairs bar was packed full of people either waiting for a table upstairs, or just enjoying the bar experience. Cocktails were good but rather expensive. The food was tasty and wait staff performed well despite being run off their feet. A good night if you're after a bit of hussle and bustle and can handle the wait.
N. H.
We had the set course dinner here - it was amazing and the staff are so friendly. Getting a table here can be tricky and the wait is often upwards of an hour but I think it's well worth it. Great atmosphere as well.
C. M.
Every dish was really good. Nice atmosphere inside. Good music but not too loud, so you could still have conversations. Our server (Sarah) was helpful in selecting our dishes:
- Do it yourself springrolls
- Pad Thai
- Pad seeyu
- Massaman curry
- Beef short rib (smaller than expected but delicious)
Note that the 'a bit more' category does not imply more food than the other categories.
Expect a very long wait on a Friday/Saturday night, if you can even get in; consider showing up early.
A. M.
If you're going to dine here I've got 2 main pieces of advice:
1. Sit at one of the bars. The staff are super friendly and great conversation.
2. Order the 'feed me' option. It borders on almost too much food and the selection is excellent.
Ensure you try something from the cocktail menu too, some interesting creations.
A. M.
We started the night out by wanting to go to Chin Chin after hearing all of the great reviews. We arrived and as expected (although it was a Wednesday night) were told that the wait for a table for two was 45mins to an hour. We were offered to go downstairs to gogo bar to see if there were any free tables. We took their recommendation and went down to gogo bar where we got a cute little table straight away. Much to our surprise, they do the exact same menu as Chin Chin! We were stoked and ordered the chefs feed me menu as soon as we sat down. We only made it through 7 of the 8 courses and the food was delicious! The staff were very friendly and the food came out so quickly. We will 100% be back!
J. R.
Ventured here for lunch one weekday, which I think was a great move as dinner wait times can be huge.
The take on food here is truly amazing. Modern twists on traditional asian dishes, as well as typical favs.
Certainly recommend this place to anyone after a truly great dining experience.
J. K.
Small bar venue, which shares the same kitchen and menu as the excellent Chin Chin's upstairs (without the extensive wait!).
If you don't mind the music a bit louder, and the lighting a bit dimmer than your average dining venue, Gogo's is the place to go in Flinders Lane for some truly outstanding Thai and friendly, professional staff.
Top tip - If it's busy, be prepared (like everyone else) to hover around a table that's finishing up, as empty tables are taken in the blink of an eye!
A. E.
We did the "Feed Me!" ... Best choice I've ever made. Everyone is stuffed. The food was absolutely perfect. Well cook, great portions, excellent for sharing. Beautiful flavours. Meats, greens, spices, rice/roti, desert! I honestly am so full, but just cant stop picking at the plate. It's too good. I will be back!
Arrived: 4pm on Easter Saturday. Place was packed. Left our number for a 30min wait. Waited down stairs at GoGo bar for max 10min while waiting for a call for our reservation.
Went up stairs with our drinks, had our bar tab transfered (so easy!) And canceled our down stairs meal and began an upstairs meal. Perfect staff everywhere.
J. A.
The food is well executed but follows within the lines i.e. it is a very good execution of that typical dish - but it doesn't really take it beyond what you might find in a very good Asian place.
If you sit at the bar you will more or less be ignored by any and all of the servers.
M. H.
The dry curry soft shell crab is my favourite dish. Always go for the dishes that are unique to Chin Chin - any conventional dishes that I've had there (e.g. fried calamari) have not tasted as flavoursome / not been as satisfying.
Yes it can be a long wait so go early and leave your number or opt for sitting at the bar if there are spaces available. Otherwise, some options are:
- Eat at the Go Go Bar downstairs
- Get takeaway
The feed me option is really good value and they choose good dishes.
A. M.
Finally managed to go without waiting for hours on end! Tuesday night and I got seated right away at the bar. I can understand now why this place is so popular. Crazy nice food with a buzzing atmosphere. The chilli wagyu was incredible and the son in law eggs were fantastic.
J. P.
Great atmosphere and amazing food. We sat at the bar area and could see the mouthwatering desserts being made. Rather than picking menu items the waitress made some recommendations that didn't disappoint! Kingfish sashimi, beef short ribs and to top it off three amazing desserts and a visit from the winners of the Melbourne cup complete with cup trophy!
B. H.
Beautiful meal, we ordered the feed me option. The only complaints, the Rendang didn't taste as good as the traditional dish and the feed me option contained mainly fish meals. The service is quick and the staff were both polite and helpful, will definitely visit again.
D. K.
One of my favourite restaurants in Melbourne if not the favourite. Great tasting food well presented. Only drawback is that I don't go often enough because you can't book and it takes ages to get a table.
P. C.
Nice cocktails, pictured is the Kaiju colada, very busy standing room only at the time.
K. F.
Unfortunately there are no reservations so we had to wait a lot but the food was definitely worth it. It really was a whole new experience for our tasting buds and although I don't really like spicy food I like the dished overall.
E. R.
The food was amazing. You need to make sure that you get there early though because it fills up extremely fast from the business people finishing work. The pork was by far the best dish and drinks were just as good
A. B.
I do love Chin Chin, but only really spend time in Go Go because I'm waiting for a table there. It's always noisy, crowded and a constant battle to hold on to your seats. Personally I much prefer speakeasy style bars, but the drinks are great here if you like this kind of atmosphere.
C. B.
Top tip: if the queue for Chinchin is too long this place will serve you the same menu and we go seated almost immediately. Phenomenal food, excellent service, great drinks and a good vibe. Can't recommend the "feed me" banquet menu enough!
P. C.
We loved it..we are in our early 50s and the crowd was mixed from young to old, great dj smashing out the beats great service friendly barman a bit pricey but not any different to other bars.. Chin Chin upstairs have great food and welcoming staff we will definitely be back
L. H.
Chill atmosphere and great food. Loads of choices on the menu, knowing that the concept is to share small dishes. We got a tablr enstantly knowing that it was on a Wednesday evening; keep in mind that the place is pretty crowded on weekends and that you might need to wait a few hours to sit.
J. R.
Amazing food. The pomegranate cocktail with Szechuan infused gin was awesome.
However there is always a long wait to get a table, and it is too long to hold a half decent conversation.
k. f.
The service was first class. We had the same waiter all night, and they remembered everyone's name and each order without writing a thing down. Not only is that pretty impressive with a group of 6 ordering 3 things each, but they food was sooo good. Worth the wait in line for sure.
A. C.
My favorite restaurant in Melbourne. King fish sashimi and twice cooked pork ribs are amazing. Pretty much everything on the menu amazing. It is impossible to get a seat on Fri or Sat night though.
J. J.
cocktails are pricey but delicious. some dishes are better value than others, with the salt and pepper squid a standout. avoid standing in line by giving your number and waiting at the attached bar downstairs.
H. J.
my taste buds were assaulted with amazing flavors - worth a little wait embrace an awesome cocktail downstairs the guys know what they're doing and are nicer than ever required for such a busy place. if you want to spoil yourselves with insane flavors and a good laugh go here and full for under $40! Entre and two mains to share
S. D.
Great food. Loud and vibrant atmosphere. Great service. Dishes worth the high $20's per plate. No bookings, but we did not have to wait.
J. R.
I ate at Chin Chin this weekend, and loved it! The quality and quantity of food was amazing, and the flavours on every dish were authentic and delicious. I would definitely recommend this for lunch or dinner for anyone staying in Melbourne.
J. T.
Good fusion Asian cuisine paired with an international drinks selection. Very busy and usually requires registering on a waiting list. Reservations for 10-12 persons.
A. C.
It appears that they don't have reservations so you might have to wait a bit but the food is definitely worth it. Very authentic and nicely spiced Thai food and of course really polite and friendly staff. Definitely recommend this restaurant.
K. T.
Wow, this place is off the chain. The amazing tastes in the food were only beaten by the awesome service. This place is consistently one of the best places to eat in Melbourne. Get in early... It's worth the wait. Yum
S. K.
Got the "feed me" selection and the onslaught of delicious tastes kept on coming for ages. One of the best meals I've ever had. Got in before 5 so didn't have to wait and got straight into the big tsing taos and cocktail jugs. Awesome.
M. C.
Food is amazing! One of the most memorable meals I've had in years. I'm tempted to fly back to Melbourne just for another taste of "Son in Law eggs / Chilli Jam".
L. C.
One word. YUM!! so tasty and good. Well worth the wait to get in here. Great beer selection as well. Sydney could learn at lot from this place, both food wine and service.
L. B.
dined at chin chin last night with some close friends for a birthday party. we sat at the banquet table flanked by the mirror and pink neon bunny and open kitchen. this place has a great bustling vibe. the fit out is contemporary but the propaganda-esque imagery has been done to death by the likes of double happiness and cookie (my partner noted that chin chin felt like cookie, not a flattering comparison in my books!) and feels a little dated.
we had the 'feed me' set menu for $66 a head and it really was a ridiculous amount of food, we couldn't finish it. the standout dishes for me were the kingfish sashimi (i could eat this all day) and the short beef ribs. many of the fresh salady dishes tasted very similar. an over-satruation of fish sauce/lemon juice/palm sugar/chilli made the bulk of them virtually indistinguishable which was quite disappointing. the layered jelly and sago deserts were delicious but a struggle at the tail end of a long line of dishes. our waiter, who was attentive, efficient and ensured dietary requirements were taken care of was on the money, too. come prepared with an empty belly if you are considering the banquet- they will literally pump out food until you say stop!
'modern asian' is a diffcult cuisine to get my head (and tastebuds) around. i often do not understand the desire to take thai, vietnamese and the like and mash them all together as they are amazingly complex and delicious cuisines in their own right. i am not a fan of the longrain restaurants for the same reason BUT i do feel like easy tiger on smith street is an excellent example of how a restaurant can make their menu modern without compromising the flavours of the original cuisine/dishes.
will perhaps give chin chin another go but with a smaller group and order from the a la carte menu.
C. R.
It's a cool place but it's standards are dropping I reckon. When you consider the time you have to wait plus the high cost it's not that good. We had a gluggy soft shell crab curry with stale rice last time.
E. T.
Pretty decently priced. Lovely and modern Thai food. The soft shell crab curry was my favourite dish; somehow the crab was still crisp and complemented by the creamy curry.
L. H.
Excellent service and really high quality, delicious cocktails.
V. S.
Great food, best to get there before 5pm as the queue can get pretty long. Had to wait almost 2 hours when we got there after 7pm. The restaurant wont take any bookings. Worth the wait!
J. k.
What a delight!? Customer service at its best. Food is delicious, but my friend and I found the dessert too sweet but maybe that's just personal preference.
Can't wait to go there again!
N. R.
Beautiful Laneway bar with a fantastic range of whiskey and AMAZING MUSIC!
Highly recommended
E. L.
Tasty, well-presented dishes that generally draws from south-east Asian flavours – the soft shell crab in the dry curry was particularly succulent. On the whole though, it suffers a little from a flaw often seen in modern takes of Asian food – heavy-handedness, the balance of flavours a little askew.
P. C.
Had an absolute ball at Chin Chin. The best we could do was a seat at the bar, not at a table, but we had absolutely no regrets. The menu was ever so slightly pricey: not so much per dish, but there were so many awesome-sounding things to choose from that the temptation to spend up big was high. Paralyzed by choice, we ended up choosing the fixed-price $66/head "Feed Me" option, where the kitchen sends out a suitably customised selection of dishes. And boy, were we glad. Every dish was a treat: zingy kingfish sashimi, tender pork wraps, beef rips that were dripping off the bone, a barramundi/pork belly combo that was to die for, delectable son-in-law eggs, and several others. Eventually we had to call for mercy: I'm not someone to turn down food, and I was dying to try more, but we had to beg off the last course to leave room for dessert (which was, by the way, as good as everything else - a delicious sago with toffee pieces and a lychee/coconut-cream glass of awesomeness. For $66, this was outstanding value and you could do a lot worse than just leaving your meal in the hands of the staff. The lemongrass/rum cocktail was to die for, and the beer list is adequate (though not brilliant). The fixed-price menu option makes this one of the best bang-for-buck quality meals I've had in many moons. Highly recommended.
G. C.
Small place and not the post promising from the outside but that's just a cover. The food is always delicious and even if you can't score a table right away you can always go to the bar below for a drink while waiting or just watch some of the interesting art projections on the restaurant's walls.
E. S.
I really liked this place. Really cool decor inside with the neon lights, and the service was ok. Food lived up to the hype of being yummy, creative fusion fare. The portions were quite small for the price though, just saying.
H. S.
It’s always nice kick some drinks at GOGO! Cool environment and good bartenders skills 🙌🏻
E. D.
Their Vietnamese Coffee cocktail is my new favourite drink in Melbourne
L. T.
Lovely thai food. Great customer service, and the staff were friendly and helpful.
Recommended but get there a little earlier than the crowd to get a good seat.
G. F.
Hasn't disappointed. They took away or favourite vego dry curry a while back. The con is we can't get it again, the pro is that at least the menu gets updated. Vego iconography could be improved on the menu.
N. L.
Great bar for before or after dinner drinks. The most knowledgeable barmen. They sure know their stuff when mixing a drink. The atmosphere is great too.
T. Y.
I can't say enough about Go Go! the atmosphere, staff and varied array of cocktails has always made GG's my go to place in the city... Unfortunately its now also everyone else go to place in the city. Choose your night to go as later in the week it tends to be over run by bogans.
S. L.
While the food here is amazing, the policy of no reservations is a bit up itself. Try to go during the week to avoid a big que.
B. R.
OMG the food is amazing! So fresh, so tasty and the service was as good as you could hope for anywhere. Will definitely be back.
B. S.
Recommended to me by a group of mates.
f-ing amazing!
But yeah, really good food and great atmosphere have told another 3 of my friends to go
D. C.
Delicious modern thai food. Very full for lunch but everything went smoothly. Recommended but get there a little earlier than the crowd to get a seat.
A. M.
Finally got in last night - Had to have dinner at 5.15pm !! Worth the wait although some of the dishes are a little samey. We took the "Feed me" option which resulted in a tidal wave of food !
J. K.
Spare Chin Chin and go downstairs to Go Go Bar as you get the best of both worlds. Amazing DJ Friday nights and more intimate than the dining only experience upstairs
S. M.
Great spot for chill and quiet cocktail, particularly spots around there are often long waits. You can order uber eats there too!
L. V.
delicious asian cuisine and super fun environment. wish you didn't have to wait so long, but the bar downstairs 'go go' is entertaining while you wait.
N. A.
Can't go wrong with some drinks here and a nibble if you're waiting to head into Chin Chin (and a designated friend waiting in line!).
K.
Make sure if this is your first time eating at Chin Chin's you request the 'Feed me' menu.
The food was amazing and I am coming back soon!!!
Like really really amazing food
E. M. (. E.
Extensive menu - chose the 'Feed Me' option and was served dish after amazingly tasty dish. Cocktails also very good.
R. B.
Ludicrously good food, funky cocktails and a really cool vibrant atmosphere. Bought the cookbook and hopefully coming back tomorrow. Say no more...
M. R.
service was good if a little snooty, food was excellent. really fresh and full of flavour. decor is hip and boring, it's a bit too crowded and loud for conversation.
D. W.
The best food in central Melbourne. A taste explosion in your mouth. Worth the wait at the door. Must eat here!
D. “. M.
Amazing Thai style food. The best in Melbourne. Get there early or be prepared for a wait
A. B.
great food, the degustation is amazing, they serve you random plates, that are the full servings on the menu, or sometimes half servings, but they will just keep serving you until your stuffed, theres no limit as far as i can tell, we had 10 servings plus 2 deserts and they offered to keep feeding us, amazing place with great food and service, highly recommend, or maybe not since it'll probably be harder for us to get a table now :P
S. B.
Great food and location. Bit loud and staff very busy at times. No bookings. Overall enjoyed it.
M. J.
Great cocktails and snacks. Atmosphere is great even when its still early in the evening (before it gets really busy).
D. T.
Great food and reasonably priced drinks in a buzzing atmosphere. There may be queues for seats at peak times
J. M.
Had an amazing anniversary dinner here. Service was fantastic, the feed me option is the way to go
N. W.
Favourite Melbourne restaurant! Love coming here - the fresh delicious food is amazing and service is great!

d. s.
just cannot go past this killer spot as a quintessential Melbourne laneways bar.... and the cocktails are the best
J. E.
We ordered the "feed me" option and we did struggle to get through everything. Great value for money and the food was impressive.
g. h.
great food with wonderful flavours - many dishes from numerous countries. nice atmosphere
S. C.
Awesome food and cocktails. Make sure you are hungry if you do 'feed me' though, heaps of food!
A. C.
Excellent food, great atmosphere, takes awhile to get a table, but it's worth the wait.

ChinChin is so good. Absolutely worth the wait. Like others have said– the Feed Me option is the one.

The Indian Goat is wonderful, sweet and salty and served still-steaming. The perfect beer food
J. N.
Fried rice is pretty good. Miang is pricey but decent! Must try in Melbourne
D. L.
big south east asian flavours in a great funky setting. pre or post dinner drinks in the basement bar is a must.
