First visit back post-covid, booked seats on the balcony. The atmosphere was as we remembered, but have to say we were a little disappointed with the food. We decided to go with old favourites- veal and chicken schnitzels. The meat itself was well made and prepared but the sides were bland and not particularly plentiful. There is an extensive and interesting range of beers on offer as well. I have given four stars because l have visited several times and always enjoyed it, but this time something seemed a little lacking.

Great Pan-European inspired place. Love the fit out, Riverview and beers on tap. The food is great, though not 'authentic'. The feeling is "everyday premium" and anyone will find something they like. Great for a group boozy lunch or dinner.

Interesting place with a good selection of meals but not many were traditional German? Music was very loud for decent conversation. They had run out of non alcoholic beers which is not good practice these days. My salad was very bland and would have benefited from aoili or horseradish sauce

Planning our engagement party here was a dream. Event and venue manager Eloise and Vicky were great to work with and extremely prompt responding to email queries. This venue went above and beyond to help and work with us through all of our covid cancellations and last minute adjustments. Food was perfect and the night ran smoother than we could have imagined. Staff are all extremely patient and worked with us all throughout the night to cater for everyone’s needs. View of the water was great and the event organization was a 10/10.

Located in Southbank so very central and convenient. The vegetarian burger was delicious and I did enjoy the fruit flavoured spritzes but they were not very sweet. The service was not great - staff often forgot about us but maybe thats because they were busy on a Friday night.

Just what we needed after a big day out in the city. Schnitzel was crisp and jus, slaw and lemon going so well together. The ciders were so refreshing on a hot day, will be coming back as been dreaming of this dish since.

Had a christmas lunch event here. The venue was immaculate and busy. As it was an event it consisted of share plates, the food was high quality however there was not enough to go around and we missed out on trying a number of dishes due to this which was disappointing but overall had a great time.

I lived in Europe and travelled a lot there, this place is somewhat very nice and not too pricy but nothing like typical german. Even tho the menu is, beers are and few meals are quite authentic this is not really alike compared to over there. Beside that, the food was very good and we been recommended beers that suited perfectly with our meals. Ambiance was good and offpeak so pretty quick to get served.

The food is very nice, with a good selection of German classics. Great number of German beers on tap. Definitely on the pricey side, though not unexpected given the location.

A well designed space with views over the the yarra river, friendly staff, and music at a reasonable volume so you can still chat with family and friends. An extensive drinks menu including low alcohol and mocktails too which was a nice addition. Went during the day and it wasn't too noisy or crowded despite being in the middle of Southbank. Tasty shoestring fries.

After three visits I can clearly say this is a good place for dinner- for 2 people or more than 10. I came here with high expectations as I am German and know good food. This time I had the Wurstplatten and it was really good. The variety of German sausages was good and the served salads as well. I really appreciated the different mustards. They are a must as they support the different flavours of the sausages. I was surprised that the white sausage was already peeled. Let's finally talk about the beer...yeah they are all good. My personal favourites are the Weihenstephan and the Köstritzer blackbeer. Really yummy. We will eat here again.

Nice German style meals and selection of beers, with an amazing view of the Yarra and CBD. The pork knuckle I had was nice and crispy, with a tender inside. Well paired with the hefeweizen dunkel. Unfortunately not amazing value for money, but that hasn't stopped me going back a few times.

We booked the outside dining area for a celebration and it was quite a nice experience for the amount of people we had. The place had a good mix of food and drinks, since it was both a bar and a restaurant. We ordered the platter of sausages to share, although after a while it became a bit boring to eat. I'm sure there are other better choices on the menu. The table service was average; please be minded that you will have to go up to the bar to order food.

We booked for lunch under a dimmi special. We ordered fries, Mac and cheese, wings and the $60 grill plate. Food was good overall with the lamb skewers and pate like product on the grill plate (it wasn't listed on the menu as included) the main standouts. We all ordered beer or cider this time but it would be really nice to have seen some German non alcoholic drinks, like Club Mate or Fritz-kola.

Been here a couple of times. Good for large groups or having a meal on the fly on your own. Loads of space and fitted out really nicely. The big winner here are the $20 steak and drink nights. Also have had lunch here in the restaurant with friends from interstate and the food was excellent. Good friendly service.

A warm port in a storm. On a cold wet winters night we found refuge at the Hophaus and I must say it was great. Being a Tuesday it was $20 steak night. Ordered it blue and it was perfect. The beer that came with the steak was a great fit. We followed up with desert and settled for the Lemon tart. Another great choice The service was great. We will be back

Been here multiple times but although the drinks are still refreshing, the food presentation and quality has gone backwards. Long gone are the nice bretzels for a much smaller feeling pretzel roll costing $10... Much of the food is missing the attention to detail in the descriptions of the menus. For example no crispy shallots on the wings just fresh ones. A slightly different sauce subbed in for the veal schnitzel. You feel that you're getting slightly less than you ordered. This rings true to portion sizes that were bigger in years past.

Update: Weihenstephaner KORBINIAN is now available by (buy) the bottle. If you like a dark beer, if you like a Dunkel, just drink it! This beer is..... 9.8 out of 10. And enjoy it with wonderful staff behind the bar, and wonderful decor and views 👍🍺🍻 Prost! Always a great beer selection. Food is good and heavy. Definitely worth the time to make a visit, especially if beer is your thing!

Not very German food or atmosphere. The place has changed over the years in to what seems to be just another bar/restaurant. If you want a nice place to sit with a view though it does the trick. The food is fairly standard and average. Service was OK, they got an order wrong but it was fixed pretty quickly.

Beware, while this is a great 5 star bar for drinks with friends, the meals are only good for taking photos of - far too small to be satisfying. Two of us shared shoestring fries $10, sweet potato fries $12, fried polenta fingers $12 and smoked roasted pumpkin steaks with grain salad $25 and were still hungry and underwhelmed, particularly by the pumpkin dish which was bland and finished in a couple of mouthfuls. This is a common refrain among reviewers but Hophaus ain't listening. On the upside, happy hour drink prices, 4-8pm Fridays helped soften the disappointment.

Can’t fault this place for their great beers, the food isn’t bad either - however we were there on Friday evening for dinner in the bistro and saw a small mouse running around in the corner of the room. Spotted many times throughout the evening. It was entertaining but at the same time certainly not ideal - the business probably need to get on top of this ASAP!

Excellent food at reasonable prices. Weiner schnitzel is beautiful. Apple strudel is delicious. Crispy pork knuckle is fantastic, however it was more than I could eat and they refused to give me some foil to take it away. However, getting a seat in the restaurant can be difficult and frustrating. You walk in, there is no one in the restaurant, but they refuse to give you a table because they are booked for later. Even the pub tables are hard to get at times. If you want to be waited on with excellent restaurant service, best to call ahead for reservations. Otherwise its counter service only, which can be a long wait at busy times.

Headed to Hophaus on a Saturday night with no booking and were seated about 10 minutes after arriving. The restaurant was very busy but there was a nice atmosphere, we had a table right in the corner overlooking Southgate and enjoyed watching the street performers while we waited for our food. Waitress was friendly even though she was very busy. We ordered the cheese sticks/straws for entrees – they were yummy, although pretty basic. Husband ordered the pork knuckle and I got the beef cheek. The beef cheek was absolutely delicious and I would highly recommend. Be careful when ordering the pork knuckle - it is absolutely HUGE! There needs to be a warning on the menu as it could easily feed two or three people. Crackling needed a bit of work, but overall we enjoyed ourselves.

Took 30 minutes to get us one lemonade after asking twice, an hour and a half to get us food (average mains, except for the chicken wings! They were so good) and the waitress kept on screwing up our food order (when it finally came). Booked a family 21st Birthday here for a group of 17, this Resturant was the most flexible with relaxed dining times, great semi private space overlooking the river, easy gluten free options and amazing value for money. Chris made everything super easy from the get go. Food and service on the night were all 5 stars. Unique venue and great time had by all. Would book again.

These guys are pretty reliable for a good feed and a drink. We have met other people there a few times in the last 12-18 months and the service has been very consistent. This time around it was just the wife, kids and me. Kids meals were half price on a Sunday which was a good deal. Can't go without the Pork knuckle...just do it!

My wife and I had dinner last night. We had the bitterballen, a chicken schnitzel and a Wiener schnitzel with a side of German potato salad. The bitterballen are like a croquet to those unfamiliar with them. They were pretty tasty, but five balls for $16 is a bit pricey. My wife had one which had a big piece of fat inside it, but the others were OK. The schnitzels however, were disappointing. For near $30, the chicken schnitzel tasted like processed chicken rather than a chicken breast which was not value for money. The Wiener schnitzel was better although a little tough to cut at times. Both were covered in salt flakes, which didn’t enhance the flavour. The apple cider my wife had tasted good and was not too sweet. My beer was great, although the first I ordered was unavailable. They suggest a replacement, but that had run out and took them ages to change the keg. By the time I eventually got my drink, I was nearly finished my main. The staff were very friendly and attentive without being intrusive. Overall we were a bit disappointed. We could have picked any restaurant to eat at, but thought on a hot day the beers would make it a better choice. We left wishing we’d eaten elsewhere.

Live music and a decent environment to sit back and relax either inside, in one of the booths or outside on the balcony. Not a far walk from the crown to kick on late into the night.

Friendly waitress. Pricing fits in with upstairs Southbank ie not cheap. We had house cider (nice) calamari (slightly chewy but seasoned perfectly) age burgers. Both burgers medium add they should be. Tasty beef. Sauce was interesting but good. Chips were weird they could have come out of a crisp packet except they were oily. Overall we liked the food and would go back. Burger is good value for this area.

Wonderful cooking and drinks on offer. Great bar staff. Waiting times to be seated, but were pleasantly surprised after being told we would have to wait 30-40 minutes that we were seated within 10 minutes. Our table waiting servers were less than enthusiastic however (and this could have been because of a busy Saturday night, but that's their job, right?). One waitress in particular was unapologetic for splashing water all over our table, misquoted us on the price of lobster by over $100, and did not smile at all at us all night, even after we paid. I did like this place so I awarded it 4 stars. I won't be visiting again in a hurry though.

Before today, I'd never dined at HopHaus. I found it after exploring options for group dining in the city and am so glad I did! We had a booking for 15 people and every guest found the food delicious, the venue open, modern and cosy, and felt our waitress for the day (Jenn) made our time at HopHaus absolutely wonderful. She helped us portion our shared meals perfectly, was so patient and attentive the whole time and really just a pleasure to be served by. Will definitely be coming back! So, you're standing on the Southbank walking path, looking for something that's good value and not stupidly pretentious: you've found it...! Wide range of beers (German, of course - if you like stouts try the Rauchbeir, it genuinely smells like smoked bacon!) and some great bar food, to share or to hog all to yourself. Hearty sized portions and good flavour. Stop blocking the path and get up there!

Bretzel came out cold in the middle. Another 20 mins later our mains came out with no sign of drinks. Turns out they got "lost in the system". Pork knuckle was dry as the Sahara. Potato dumpling was amazing, thankfully. They took the drinks (which ended up being really good!) off our bill without our asking, which was nice, but we probably won't be back.

Great, friendly service, fabulous music & competitive prices add to the warmth of this swinging little underbridge bar. The unfortunate problem with themed-diners/bars in Australia is that they have to take into account local Aussie beers and ciders to keep the majority of punters happy. The team at Hophaus have balanced good-quality German beers (e.g. Weihenstephaner) to complement the regular punter swill. Good job guys. Atmosphere is noisy and busy, which is what you expect for Southgate. Staff were friendly and were always attentive. Food was cooked well and tasted okay for the money, but that’s somewhat standard for that area. Will more than likely be back at some point :)

So having read through ...previous reviews and urge to have apple strudel...came to Hophaus. ..now ..key to any restaurant is ...time...I went around 3 pm..so. .place was not busy...good for me..bartender knew what he was doing...made me taste couple of beers ..before settling on one...which was great...bartender was easy to talk to...smoked beer /stout was awesome...would have liked mini bratwurst more hot..came out less hotter...but bun was soft...and sausage felt just right....except the "hotness...not spiceness " I would say...6-7/10 on foodie score..ordered Apple strudel with whipped cream and without icecream ( I like my apple strudel without icecream, sorryyyyy)...hmmm..Apple strudel ..was again...lukest warm...not lukewarm...expected foam whipped cream...was given..liquid cream...need to get things more warm guys! !! Heat them up !!! Apple strudel wasn't flaky ...or crunchy...didn't feel it was fresh....I would say ..stick to German beers ..if you wanna drink..I wouldnt get excited about the food part though...
