Comments of Ponyfish Island
W. W.
A relaxing place to chill after work. Enjoy the waterfront view with a cool drinks and watch the sunset in the evening.
The bar is under the Evan walker bridge, a short walk from the Flinder station on the river side.
A. F.
Unique Melbourne experience. My claim to fame is having the very first beer on this venture many moons ago! I knew it was going to be a hit from day one and have seen it go from strength to strength with some drama in between. Great spot for a beer on a nice day and the food and drink just keeps improving. Right opposite Flinders Street Station and under the bridge to Southbank. Well worth a try.
M.
☆ Was one of the very few places that was still open at 10.00pm on a Monday night.
☆ Although the kitchen was (understandably) closed, we ordered drinks by scanning the Mr Yum QR code on the table. Our drinks arrived very quickly.
☆ Location was spectacular. It was so lovely to sit by the water and feel the evening breeze. There were heaters attached to the walls to keep us nice and warm too!
J. S.
A great spot to enjoy the sun setting on a summers evening.
Great vibe to chill and unwind with friends.
Fantastic staff - super friendly.
Delicious food and great drinks.
A. L.
Cool little bar tucked underneath a bridge on the Yarra. Nice vibe with friendly staff. We order a couple of pizzas and drinks. The pizzas were pricey but they tasted pretty good. The seafood pizza was the group favourite
C. W.
In Melbourne for a week for my wedding anniversary and this place has so far been our favourite place for drinks. Even stopped by a second time for dinner tonight. Great ambiance and views all around. Drinks are 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Y. A.
Great atmosphere. Good drinks good food and a perfect place to hang out with office mates or partners.
M. B. M.
One of the best waterfront spots in Melbourne. Great especially at sunset.
The pizza margherita delicious but a focacia base rather than the traditional pizza dough.
G. D.
On the Yarra River, under the Evan Walker bridge, sits Ponyfish Island.
This is a relaxing cocktail spot where one can sit and watch the ships go by.
I had the pink grapefruit margarita, with tequila, pampelle grapefruit, lime, agave and a glass lined with pink rock salt which cost $20.
The staff were a laugh with their friendly conversation.
And sitting there at night was no issue as I had a standing gas heater beside me.
K. H.
I had a wonderful night at
pony fish island, the cocktails were flowing and the staff were exceptional. Chloe, Sam and max were incredible they looked after us all night and made us feel extremely welcome. I look forward to coming here again soon, mostly for the fantastic staff.
D. B.
Nice bar at sunset. watch the boats go by. OK prices
J. W.
Really chill relaxing spot to hang out. We were lucky enough to catch a corner booth, relax in the shade during a lull of afternoon foot traffic, and enjoy the waterside views with cool drinks. Prime spot if you're not caught in peak hour. The mocktails they made up for us were also very refreshing.
Y. P.
Great location. You feel you are on the boat! I went on weekday after 8pm wasn’t busy. There is only outside seat, but they have heater. Fun to come with friends or partner.
S. Y.
A cool place to hang out with friends or take your partner out on a date as you're right by the river. Friendly customer service and you're able to order at the table via QR code. Prices a little bit higher than average.
Weekends can be busy and expect a queue.
M. A.
2 years on I revisited the nestled away Ponyfish island, after the sunny weather attracted people back into the city. It was bustling with every table taken, found a few chairs and enjoyed a cheeky drink or 2. Fantastic place to be when the weather is ripe, friendly bar staff and a variety of drink options to choose from. QR online ordering is a bonus too.
Fantastic location for a bar, waterfront seating and views at every turn. Fantastic kick back spot for a chilled afternoon.
N. T.
Amazing bar, must try in Melbourne!
Stunning fit out, friendly staff and a laid back environment to enjoy a fancy cocktail and snack
J.
Didn’t have high expectations as both Arbory Afloat and Yarra Botanica are just ok however Ponyfish was absolutely fantastic. Pizzas were delicious and tasty and the range of margaritas was a very pleasant surprise. Would highly recommend.
V. W.
Cool place to meet with friends or even for a date.
It has nice views to the city and buildings around the Yarra. The couch was pretty comfortable, different from the table + stools. Also, the breeze is very cold during winter, and might the heaters not be enough.
All drinks that we had was great and delicious.
Give it a go!
J. H.
Great atmosphere and location. However, the staff were so unfriendly with a real vibe of customer service fatigue.
Drinks are a bit over priced. Wouldn't go back.
N. J.
The best view of Yarra river with Melbourne concrete jungle
O. K.
We frequent this beautiful little cozy casual inexpensive place for some usual cocktails and drinks as love the vibe.
Not much for a snacking place (read Disaster), A must if you want to let your hair loose.
A.
Really neat spot on the Yarra to take in an evening with drinks and good company. The setup of the bar is rather unique, being that it's on the water itself. The music had really good vibes, seating all around the edges, for close water front views. Bear in mind there is no structure to the seating, first-come-first-serve basis. I had a great time!
M. C.
A great place to grab a drink on a hot afternoon! Surprisingly not as expensive as expected 30 AUD for a cocktail pitcher/jug that had about 6 drinks in it. The pimms was really good after a long hot walk. Looked crowded from the street but there were plenty of seats in the shade (or sun if you’re into that). Great views of course included!
W. T. S. C.
Lived in Melbourne all of my life and walked passed this place for years wondering what it would be like. No smell which I thought there would be - quick service and good tunes. Quite a surprise and worth a stop for a drink and quick snacks.
A. F.
Love this unique spot! Enjoy a local beer right in the Yarra River! Definitely bundle up if it's cold, the heaters don't put much of a dent in the open air temperature unless you score a seat right next to one.
C. M. (.
Ow, my, God.
This place is the best! Bar staff are so friendly, drinks are will priced and this bar is under a damn bridge! Such a chill spot, really cute for a date, or a relaxing drinks with friends. Will definitely be coming back!
Y. O.
It’s a great bar to have after work drinks.
Not that spacious but has an wonderful sunset view!
S. T.
Great little spot to have a drink and a bite to eat. Good atmosphere, friendly staff. Located under a bridge in the middle of the river. A place you go to when the weather is fine, they do have gas heaters, but not somewhere you wanna be if it's bucketing rain as there's not much coverage.
P. P.
Great atmosphere! Great service with a smile.. especially John from the kitchen made us feel at home!
A. M.
Ponyfish island is a sanctuary in contrast to the overhyped and overcrowded Arbory Afloat and Riverland bars. If you can find space to sit the chilled out music and the location are wonderful for imbibing a few beverages on a hot day.
P. S.
Limited food selection, small range of drink options, but worth making the effort! This small but unique place is all about its place. In the middle of the Yarra river you can soak up this true Melbourne icon, while enjoying great food and a drink, it may be a limited selection but what they have is good! Great place for a casual drink with friends. Staff are always helpful and friendly!
A. M.
We came here for some drinks and hoped to get something to eat. We loved the location and had a couple of drinks but after looking at the food menu we moved on to another venue.
J. S.
Place is super cool! The food could be better
J. D.
Great when you can find a good spot to watch the sunset while drinking a nice beverage! Both cool or warm (depending on the season).
K. N.
Absolutely loved my experience there! Amazing location right under the bridge. It started raining shortly after we went there and the vibe was just amazing! The alcohol selection was big and the cocktails were amazing!!! Then to top it all off the pizza we ordered (mushroom pizza) was some of the best we've ever had! Definitely would go there again.
m. p.
Unique place for a beer. The cafe is situated at the foot of one of the supports for the Evan Walker Bridge. A nice outpost to people watch from. The Ponyfish Unlikely Lager makes for a good drink on a warm day.
K. M.
Came here with my god sister and we shared a plate of Chorizo tacos.... Was an interesting place and it was great to sit and just watch the happenings on the river, especially the birds... 😊
M. G.
Mulled wine is perfect on a cooler day, and the place is usually packed in the summer. An interesting take on Melbourne's laneway culture, being built into a bridge.
H.
Pony fish island was a cute little places under a bridge, a bit tough to find especially when you don’t expect a restaurant to be in this location. The food however was amazing! We had the pulled mushroom tacos and the nachos, both had great flavour and looked amazing. The service is not so great, but the cocktails are really good.
Z. L.
Cocktails - ⭐⭐⭐
Location - ⭐⭐⭐⭐✨
- Cocktails with creative/unique namings with fantastic presentation... HOWEVER, were ordinary in flavour profile and didn't satisfy the expectation.
- Location/Atmosphere was on point and brought good vibes.
In summary:
Would return for drinks, but unlikely to be drinking from the cocktail menu.
W. S.
Excellent bar in a very unique location on the Yarra River. We had a few beers and also tried the cocktails. My only criticism is that there were people smoking everywhere. I found this uncomfortable. Smokers should have to smoke away from the venue or in an allocated area. I would definitely recommend this place minus the smell of smoke 😀🍹🍺 .
D. B.
Cocktails hold up. View of the brown river is... Brown.
But that can they do enjoy that? You still look great sipping cocktails in the middle of the river
N. T.
Beautiful little bar for a drink on the river on my first ever day in Melbourne. Would recommend.
N. D.
You need to ensure you get here early enough to secure your spot. It's a fave of the locals and is a lovely place to get some great drinks and people watch.
It's even better in summer as it's just the best spot. During summer, make sure you come as early as possible. In winter - you can get away with coming a little later.
I am yet to sample their food - however, I am keen to come back.
Definitely recommended!
m. k.
Absolutely love it here great atmosphere under the bridge had a great chillout here
S. M.
A must if you're visiting the city and looking for a few easy drinks on the river.
B. H.
Perfect spot to take Mum out when she’s in town and needing her wine & pizza
J. B.
A awsome lunch spot on a sunny day, the new menu provides a great selection. Very entertaining to watch the experienced fishermen catching bait fish.
J. C.
Great place for a drink. Its a little island in the middle of the river just below a bridge, great views and a great place to relax with a nice beer. The beer selection is good amd the prices are reasonable.
R. C.
Not a real island but is a very nice bar in the middle of the Yarra river. Great views and lights surround evening views.
T. H.
Great little bar on an island in the middle of the Yarra. No inside seating so bring your jacket. So worth it.
M. V.
Having special Ponyfish beer (only 1,2%) with the great view of the city ! Very good experience!
R. R.
Always easy and no fuss here...great drinks just come to your table while you watch the world go by...love it
L. M.
Great spot for a drink and a chill out. Although we didn't eat, the food looked great for those wanting a quick eat/snack.
C. L.
Great place to meet for an after work drink ... feels like you on a boat on the Yarra. Love it!
H. W.
It's always crowded. But it doesn't have any loud music, so it gives you a chance to catch up with friends and enjoy the sun go down in Melbourne city. The fact that you're under the middle of a bridge and surrounded by water makes it so relaxing after a busy day of work.
S. P.
Easy going and relaxed venue to have some drinks after work, or before you kick on. Unique and great views of the city, especially at night!
A. H.
A secluded spot to enjoy river with a few drinks! Can get a bit cold during winter but the heaters so the job.
D. M.
Great bar but even better vantage point up and down the Yarra river. Very decent prices and cool atmosphere sitting on the base of a bridge support
S. M.
Ponyfish is a definitive Melbourne bar situated in the middle of the Yarra, offering stellar views as well as delicious cocktails and scrumptious bar snacks. Their espresso cocktail is one of the best I’ve had, and the blackberry cocktail (it’s creative name I can’t remember) shown was equally impressive. Make sure to give Ponyfish Island a visit!
L. M.
Best bar in Melbourne and great staff! I would recommend eating nachos with guacamole (de-constructed, because I’m awkward)
T. P.
Great venue, good for a date overlooking the river
D. K.
Trendy bar on the water. Heaters and super friendly staff. Awesome place for a drink
M. Z.
Bar tenders are legends. Enjoyed our night! Thank you :)
E. P.
Beautiful scenery, cozy atmosphere, affordable price, the river is a little cold, but it is the best.
A. S.
Can't wait to come back and have another drink! Spectacular staff, and a location to dream of.
One of the most 'Melbourne' places to have a drink, don't miss it!
I. C.
Always enjoyed this place, but since the renovation it's gone up a notch. Delicious food, somehow coming out of that tiny "kitchen", and beer on tap - hallelujah! Good tunes too, and the toilet facilities are slightly improved too. Not much more they could fit in so great job!
E. D. S.
Fantastic place to have a beer on any given day. Great bites too..
J. G.
Very nice place for a drink any time of the day or night !
J. A.
Lovely little bar in the middle of the river. Good selection of beers, ciders and wines with a simple tasty food menu. Highly recommended a stop as you walk over the bridge
J. E.
Great Summer haunt, can be very exposed so if you're fair skinned like me ,or cant handle the wind like my friends, stick to under the bridge parts. Menu varies both in variety and quality but was not expecting gastro meals from a pub that's stuck to a bridge support like a barnacle
B. P.
A great place to hang out with friends and see the beauty of Melbourne city.
C. H. R.
Do it absolutely on evening time, surrounding buidings with lightning on Yarra are great. Cocktail is just fantastic
C. M.
Drinks are good but the online menu is a bit odd and confusing to order from. Good sunshine if the weather is nice. Men's toilets have two urinals, no regular toilet and seems to always be a line for the ladies toilet. Get some unisex toilets yeah?
M. T.
What an awesome place for a bar! At first throught that google maps are showing the wrong place, but it's really in the middle of a river!
I. H.
Great location right on the Yarra River. Friendly staff.
The bar can get busy.
L. S.
First time back in years - and love to see all the renovations and improvements you guys have done. The new menu is a plus too and have to come back for more steamed dumplings! Absolutely delicious!
D. R.
Yummy cocktails, great vibe, great views and great service. Easy to get to from Flinders Station.
P. P.
Drop down here on photowalks from time to time. The prices are a reasonable for the CBD and the bouncers look after it well. Good spot to observer river traffic and to check out Southbank.
Y. A.
It's a great place to relax under the bridge, you can enjoy the city view on both sides of the river!
A. D.
Loved it. Came for the location, stayed for the friendly bar staff and the super cool atmosphere! Literally, its freezing in Melbourne.
F. T.
Great chill out vibes with an overview of the city and just in yarra river. Drinks are great, food selection also! Definitely worthy to stop by if you are alone, with your loved or friends. This place embraces all.....:)
L. F.
Great place to grab a beer after work or whilst touristing around. Fantastic place to take in the sights of Southbank particularly at sunset.
T. T.
Had veggie nachos, was around $13 and the portion size was massive, great selection of drinks. Groovy theming and great location.
R. A.
such pretty location but seemed to be out of a lot of stuff (no food, grenadine, triple sec etc) still a lovely experience
D. W.
I'm hesitant to write this review. There's nothing wrong with this place, but not every place suits everyone and this one wasn't one that suited me. It's a bar. Not a pub/restaurant. Just a bar.
The location itself is spectacular. The entire structure of the bar is attached to one of the supports for the walking bridge between Southbank and the CBD. Great views all around, and certainly a nice place to sit (when the weather is nice) towatch the rowing teams practice on the river. I'm not sure how quickly that comfort would evaporate if it had started raining. The bridge itself provides limited cover, but not completely, so probably not the best place to be sitting outside if there was more than a light drizzle.
As for the ambiance, I thought the trance/dance music was a bit too loud and completely out of place for a venue with barely space to walk and no place to dance. I was reminded of a wannabe clothing store at a shopping mall that plays dance music to try to seem cooler. That doesn't work for me when I'm shopping and it didn't work at Ponyfish either. Every patron was talking to others in small groups, and the music just made it harder to do what everyone had come there to do, which was to meet friends and colleagues after work.
I never saw a food menu, and don't even know if they had one. I did try to order a cup of tea and was told they didn't have that. I ended up settling on an expensive glass of soda water. Prices were high, selection was limited to basically alcoholic drinks only. I guess that makes sense considering their limited space and ultra-premium location.
None of this is actually bad, if that's what you're looking for, but it's a bar, and just a bar. Considering the limited selection, distracting music and high prices, it's not a place for me. I'm clearly not their target customer.
NOT RECOMMEND
S. S.
Perfect happy hour place or bar to watch the sunset. The drinks are reasonably and the view was great.
E. S.
Cute spot, called in as we saw it walking past. Downfall was we went to get out of the rain and the roof leaked.. would be great if it hadnt!
P. H.
Always one of the best places to take a visitor to Melbourne.
G. D. M. A.
Beautiful view from all over the place. Not too many variety of beer.
C. X.
Noice mulled wine! Plus awesome view.
T. H.
My first visit with a Japanese friend. A fabulous place to sit and relax after work. The 2 glasses of wine l drank were extremely disappointing. The Italian Prosecco was like lolly water unbelievably poor served in a dreadful glass. The St Hallet Riesling was bland and lacked any character you would expect from the Eden Valley.
H. B.
Very nice view, friendly staff, but pricier than expected - $20 per cocktail.
K. S.
Great to have a bar located literally on the Yarra River. Very crowded of an evening, limiting options to enjoy the views properly/comfortably. Drinks are priced at a premium to reflect the location. From memory no draught beer options available.
Would go again at a quieter time of day to make the most of the experience.
Staff were very friendly :)
R. R.
Cool bar near the water under the bridge with some interesting cocktails. Can be a bit chilly as it's on the water but worth checking out
W. V.
Lovely spot that you have to visit while in Melbourne. Great for when the sun is out, but it isn't that hot.
J.
Great bar to relax and hang out. Unique location and perspective of melbourne, definitely a great spot to check out.
F. M.
This is a great little pub in a very unusual location under the bridge. Good selection of beers.
M. C. H. M.
Good place to enjoy the view of the city in the river and have a cold beer
S. &. S.
Don't get the positive reviews tbh. The view itself is beautiful but the cocktails are subpar premixed style, of which they "run out" of. Service was lack-lustre though it appears staff were trying as best they could.
T. P.
One of the best sunset for see in Melbourne! But you need to have a luck to get a chair for seat!
D. C.
Great little place for a quick after-dinner drink on a weeknight. Usually pretty packed on weekends. They have a great selection of drinks, and the staff had a great time playing around with my custom cocktail. Very helpful and friendly.
Definitely bring a jacket in winter, or if the winds picked up.
D. S. M.
Fun place on Yarra River serving their own beer and bar food
S. L.
Wonderful cocktail bar serving up some of the CBD's finest creations at a reasonable price point. The recent renovations are incredible and add a feel of European lux to the middle of the Yarra.
A popular spot but worth a wait if needed, extra points for creative cocktail jugs & welcoming service.
Drinks at sunset is a must for anyone wanting to experience the authentic buzz of Melbourne's hospitality scene post-Covid.
E. J.
I think your bar provide great service👍
A. E.
Ponyfish Island is so unique in its location and the views of the cityscape are perfect. This is great for a lunch time or evening drink or feed. The staff are fantastic and the ambience is incredibly friendly too.
It can get busy during lunch but given its location, it's absolutely expected and worth a visit. No place better to relax in the sun with an Aperol Spritz.
P. M.
I can't believe that more people haven't heard about this place. The drinks are always delicious, the food is excellent and even if you're just getting little nibbles then you're still well-served from the menu.
The ambiance is excellent too; you'd think that a bar built ON the Yarra River would stink eventually but surprisingly, not really
T. M.
I've never been here before because it's always been too busy but I went with a friend on a cold winter's night mid week and it was great. Not too many people, lots of heaters to keep toasty warm and unlike most other times, plenty of privacy. Still got the great views including the periodic Crown Casino gas ball explosions as well as really quick bar service. Overall a really good night. Recommended for mid winter nights when everyone else is too afraid to be outside on the water!!!
T. C.
Nice place to chill for a beer. Food wise, limited options
N. W.
We went here at night and enjoyed two cocktails on the water with live music and beautiful views of the city. The place seems quite spacious even though it is small. We admired the ingenuity of the cocktail list, although they are very pricey. I recommend the cocktail with the pistachio fairy floss :)
R. H.
The View..... Great ending to a night out
R. C.
I can not express how much i appreciate your great member’s help to try to find out my lost phone. Max, he was so patient to try to use his own iphone to login to find where my iphone was. Another thanks to his colleague but sorry i was a bit drumk and in rush so forgot to ask his name. In conclusion, great staff, i love this bar and will definitely recommend everyone i know or on the social media to visit such good a bar.
N. S.
Cute little bar (mostly busy but you can get a seat) next to the river! Absolutely love this place
M. S.
Really nice place to chill down by the Yarra and enjoy a drink. Obviously a lot moire popular in the warmer months, so may be a bit crowded. Staff are lovely and are happy to recommend a new brew they've gotten in.
C. N.
Tiny little gem on the Yarra River, love the whale ale here, charming smell, invigorating taste
I. N. (.
This is a floating restaurant under the Southgate Pedestrian Bridge. This retro-chic riverside venue is good for a light bite and some drinks, but I had a dinner here and it was good too!
I ordered a juice and a toast and I love the toast so much! It was great (the melted cheese is one of the best!) and it's not that expensive. The view is not that superb, but really enjoyable with a breeze along the bridge. there's a heater near the cashier if you're not into a cold temperature. the services was good too, the waiter would deliver your food. Your order number would be represented with a playing cards (I got Jack of Hearts!). The environment is so great too, you could stroll around the river after you had the good times here.
S. W.
Great little place for a drink after work.
M.
Hidden away under a bridge this bar is very worth a visit! Wide range of cocktails and beer selections. Clean bathrooms and plenty of gas heaters. Even in the wind this bar is worth visiting for the views and the experience. Very friendly staff, happy to give beer suggestions. Unique smoking section! Would happily visit again.
N. T.
Came here yesterday and got the nachos with the Ponyfish Lager which both were really nice with a generous serving of toppings on the nachos as well as the staff were really friendly too. Like the location of this place too under the footbridge which makes it feel cozy in a way, would definitely recommend this place if you're in the area to sit, relax and have sonething to eat
A. S.
Great bar with good selection of beers.
Only problem - a few people throwing their cigarette butts directly into the river instead of an ashtray.
It would be great if staff could monitor this, or ensure that every table has an ashtray.
Because of this, rating is lower.
M. M.
Took staff far too long to acknowledge we were standing at the bar as they were chatting in the corner. We watched several couples and groups of people leave because they weren't served. Absolutely freezing and none of the heaters near us were turned on, and when we asked staff they turned one on only for it to burn out after 10 minutes. Delicious nachos and a great view along the river. Shocked they had no stubby holders for sale on such a freezing day- made it uncomfortable to hold our cold beers.
A. A.
Fun little bar located under a bridge, literally in the middle of the Yarra river, surrounded by water. Feels like being on a boat but it’s stable. Novel idea! The food is good, the beer is great and the view is amazing. Only downside is that it’s always packed with people, so it can be very hard to find a seat and service can be slow.
M. “. B. O. C.
An awesome location for a beer and a bite to eat. It does get busy but worth any wait you might have to endure. Not sure what it's like during current COVID-19 conditions.
E. C.
Interesting location to have a bar / venue...located right on the Yarra, under the footbridge. Wonderful selection of cocktails and yummy bar food; semi-casual, picturesque and ubiquitous in photographs for promoting this beautiful city! Outdoor heaters in Winter for outside seating 👍.
R. C.
Great atmosphere, good drink range. The night view is fantastic.
j. j.
Good vibes good drinks good food 🤙
M. K.
Best place for a quiet drink, whether you're heading out after or just heading home from work. In the summer it's cool and shady, in winter it's chilly and brisk but still worth going to if you layer up.
C. O.
Neat bar under a bridge. Fun to go even in the rain.
B. W.
Cool place. Should be more of these bars in the middle of rivers
L. S.
Beautiful little bar located on the water. Great views and nice for a chat
K.
A unique experience at a bar in the middle of the Yarra. Can be a surprise or challenge to find it when you're looking.
Laid back vibe, mix of ages, Good cocktails, always busy, great service.
Amazing views of soutgbank, the city, and down the river.
C. T.
Very pleasant sitting at Ponyfish Island enjoying an Aperol Spritz or two.
R. F.
Cute place to stop for a drink, in the middle of Yarra river
R. G.
Place is nice and cool. If there is more snacks it's better
S. A.
I thoroughly enjoyed the location and theme of this venue. I was able to get a table right away with some beautiful Yarra views.
The food was highly priced for Melbourne but not too bad. The food was VERY delicious and the staff were all very well presented and professional.
I highly recommend this place for your next venue.
S. M.
Nice little bar to have a drink or two after work. A great place for friends and with amazing views over the river. Make sure to get there early to get the best tables.
S. L.
Great little spot for a few drinks in the city!
S. P.
Lovely spot to sit with a drink and watch the world go by (I'd place it more as a bar than a cafe though!) Mulled wine was quite good, make sure you take a jacket! It can get pretty busy so you might need to tussle for a table a little in the evening.
N. M.
One of my favourite bars to hit up at all times and in all four seasons of the year. They have a great view of the river, well chilled microbrewed beer and the atmosphere to make this bar a hit in summer, and they have the heaters and mulled wine to take you away during a cold winter day. Ponyfish!
M. L.
Great drinks, great food. Nice setting on the river, unusual. Crowd seems relaxed with equally relaxed staff. Make sure come here in the late afternoon when the sun starts to set over the water.
S. L.
The location is super novel. Amazing views of the city and Yarra. Staff we're great. It gets busy. Not many bathrooms. No tap beer. Bloody Mary is wild.
N. V.
Good atmosphere but cocktails are poor and food is just okay. Good place to enjoy a beer or wine. People go here mostly for the uniqueness of the location.
R. D.
Great little bar in the middle of the yarra. Nice vibe and good beer and views
M. L.
It can get cold on Ponyfish as it's located under a footbridge and on a river, but there are usually more than enough outdoor heaters to keep people happy. The bouncers here are lovely and accommodating, and the drinks are reasonably priced.
T. C.
Lovely little location located on the Yarra, awesome staff who were up for a chat and great service. The venue is very small but organised in such a way that the thoroughfare was never too crowded and walking to and from the bar was simple. Definitely returning here at some point.
M. R.
A nice little bar in Southbank where you can sit below the bridge, watch the banks of the river, or the setting sun. There is a decent selection of drinks. The only challenge is it can get pretty busy on weekends, and in summer. During winter, the bar can actually go under water if it rains too heavily.
C. S.
Every time I come to Melbourne I go to pony fish island it’s for a great atmosphere stellar location and sensational cocktails. Even take the boys there for a cocktail they think it’s a bit woos but when they taste the delicious refreshing cocktails and we relax it’s all sweet.
P. m.
Nice location/view but expensive
C. B.
Cute little cafe, located half under a bridge and surrounded by water. It can be crowded at times, as it seems pretty popular. Sit down, relax and enjoy a bottle of cidre in the summer - what a fantastic way to spend your afternoon.
P. S.
A great if almost hidden gem in the middle of the yarra river. Perfect for a late night drink with mates or a romantic spot for a first date. Staff are kind and prices are about what you would expect. A unique view that won't be forgotten easily!
N. A.
Love heading to PFI. Never disappoints and always full of great company!
A. P.
Love this place! Has craft beers, plenty of wines, great view of Southbank. Does get fairly crowded during peak times and bloody cold on a windy winters day.
L. S.
nice view!
Pulled Pork & Slaw Tacos delicious!
D. L.
You simply can't find a better location for evening drinks than this little bar on the river, provided the weather is good. The beer selection was on the tawdry side, with no trap beer available, but what an amazing Vista!
A. S.
Quirky location, really fun. The music was a touch loud for conversation but that may be saying more about my age than the bar 😂
N. E. T.
Great place for a beer and view of Yara river
K. M.
Awesome location with nice food and bites, came back twice in the very short time I was visiting Melbourne.
S. Z.
Very nice place, not so good during rainy days, but I definitely recommend a visit there
S. B.
Great Bar on the water. Nice selection of beers and cocktails. Music was just the right level to allow a good conversation while we downed some suds and unwound. Didn't have any food but the burgers looked amazing!
L. A.
Fun use of a bridge support. Friendly staff, good selection of drinks. Lovely on a sunny day but do be aware there's limited shade so wear a hat!
M. V.
The best place to enjoy beer during your shopping or sightseeing day in Melbourne. You can choose a table in sun or in the shade, depending on your preference and the availability. They also serve finger food and nacho plates, but honestly, the best part is to have a beer and enjoy the sun!
A. O.
Great place meet new people all the time there and staff are very chilled about things great amazing on a sunny day
C. d. S.
A great hidden treasure of Melbourne, Ponyfish Island is an awesome spot for a drink down by the water with incredible views of the city.
Any time of year it's a great bar to head to and because of the location you can set yourself up for heading out in the city, Flinders, or Southbank.
Stop in for a drink and a bite and enjoy sneaking down the stairs from the bridge like you own the city!
N. T.
Pretty cool atmosphere and friendly staff. Had some great beers and wines too. Cool place to chill by the river
A. P.
Such a great place to have a drink on a hot day, the view was awesome. It's a shame they don't serve food all day long, the kitchen was closed between 3-4 so we missed out on snacks.
R. D.
Enjoyed a lovely glass of wine with my good lady wife at sunset. Lovely views, complete with the fit boys practicing their parcour on the river bank. Very romantic.
C. R.
We loved this bar! Enjoyed sitting on the river, while having a few drinks. Great place for a view and people watching.
B. C.
Lovely Saturday night drinks here - the mulled wine was divine! Heaters made the area cozy, given the cold temperatures and being on the water. Lovely staff and great options.
J. B.
Great spot to sneak away from the glaring eyes of rich city dudes and their mistresses for a few beers. Very relaxed atmosphere and great music. Any bar that plays Iggy Pop's The Idiot is alright by me.
G. L.
Guest friendly, Good place in nice weather.
L. J. E.
Amazing take away cocktails for such a great price🙌🙌🙌👌
E.
Really cool wee bar that provides a little escape from the rest of the city. They keep track of the number of people going in so although it can get crowded it never feels claustrophobic. Good selection of drinks.
D. K.
Waterside spot to drink and have a few bites
Z. H.
Best mulled wine we've ever had. Great on a cold autumns night. Bartender remembered us from the previous night and offered my little fella a free lemonade. Where else has that ever happened?
R. S.
You wouldn't expect to find a bar at the bottom of a bridge support pillar, but this is Melbourne of course!
Great little spot with epic views of the Yarra.
If you find yourself in the area, I'd strongly advise making a bee-line for this place! You won't regret it :)
B. D.
Fantastic place. I always expect this bar to be too packed and overpriced for such an amazing location but it always defies expectations. The bar staff are super friendly and will get your drinks to quickly! Bunch of great bar food as well.
F. J.
Great ambience and awesome feel to have a quality time with a bunch of people! Hard to find a place coz of the crowd, but once you get in, great place to be. Be sure to carry a coat with you if it's even slightly cold
J. M.
Cool little island in the middle of the Yarra river with local beers and eats
J. L.
Great atmosphere. Good beers.not very clean though as bar is always sticky.also prefer some upgrade on finger food
B. M.
Cute spot for an afternoon beer. The ponyfish lager was nice. Not great for groups. The food looked really good and generous servings.
T. B.
Favourite bar in the world! Great sunset views, great drinks.
Get here early afternoon if you want a decent spot!
S. S.
Another reason why Melbourne kicks ass. Quirky, and pretty awesome location hidden underneath a bridge. Drinks were good, and a decent range for a small place, and the food although not tried seemed good. Sparkly lights of Melbourne's skyscrapers, combined with the river and plenty of toasty heaters make this one of the best new places to enjoy this pretty city.
I. T.
Nice place, and convenient. I went there after work, and the foot traffic on the bridge overhead was quite pervasive. Other than that, it was a nice little place with a decent view, seating, staff and beer selection. I wouldn't say no to going there again.
L. R.
It was ok... Quite unpleasant having people smoking around you with no where to move to. Smell from the Yarra also a bit of a turnoff on a very hot day. Staff were pleasant though.
M. L.
Delicious tacos and quesedillas!
C. H.
A nice find. Catching up with friends, or feeling like a nice cool beverage if you are around the area, drop in to take the weight off. Its pleasant sitting and watching life go by.
N. B.
Riverview. Automated service. Very
G. B.
It was interesting to see this place because of its location but I don't think I'll go back. There was nowhere to sit because there were too many people in there and it was hard to move with everyone getting in everyone else's way. The drinks were a bit on the expensive side too but maybe those prices are normal around that area.
K. P.
Lack of tap beers is always a disappointment but understandable due to location. So be aware. However great location. Great cocktails. And awesome for afterwork drinks
E. S.
Quirky concept, using space otherwise not thought of. Had a Pims jug and nachos, between three, and worked out to be the perfect afternoon bevvie and snack. If the nachos is anything to go by, the whole menu is a must have!
K. R.
Great location, atmosphere. Awesome bar. Problem - it's always so packed you can rarely ever get in and if you do, you can't move -literally.
C. S.
This place is always packed after work, it has a great vibe and a fantastic view up and down the Yarra. I might be used to Geelong prices, but I almost fainted when the bartender told me my glass of Rosé was $11. If you're going to meet a friend here, I would advise to wait for them at the top of the stairs- we were separated until another patron left the premises as they were at capacity.
E. P.
Great place to go in Melbourne for some casual drinks with friends. Be careful though as it does get a bit nippy down on the water but luckily they have a great mulled wine to warm you up
J. T.
There’s a certain novelty of doing something unique, and this bar right in the middle of the Southbank Pedestrian Bridge certainly offers that up in the novelty department. After walking Melbourne throughout the day, I guess we can all take a well-deserved break and simply hang out under the bridge. Of course, Melbourne also have a big beer culture, so enjoying a pint here wouldn’t hurt.
T. M.
Amazing bar at Flinder's street , under bridge facing yarra river. Best service and very helpful staff. All Alcohols are reasonable priced. Nice view of river and heaters are also installed to keep you warm.
N. B.
I can't cross the Southbank bridge without succumbing to temptation to visit Ponyfish Island. Staff are super friendly and make a great cocktail. Although you have to fight for a seat sometimes, the vibe is super relaxed and the view is awesome.
A. H.
Great little pub under a bridge. When the temperature soars, you can hide away close to the water and cool down with a refreshing craft beer or cider. Has a nice little vibe to it.
R. T.
Such a beautiful place to be on a chilly winter evening. The view and the wine is so perfect. Tasted the espresso martini as well. Totally worth it.
S.
Nice little bar in a unique venue under the bridge. Offers a nice view on both Southbank and the CBD. Good selection of beers in the 9$-10$ range.
m. e.
The Troll bar, not because of the people in it but that it nestles in under the ironwork of a Yarra bridge
This place is delightful and couldn't be more water's edge, and as an intercity visitor, its a great place to sit and take in the city.
Nice simple food, good drink list and seasonal specials makes it a place I often return to at any time of the day.
For kids it's a great lunch stop with its all pervading wow factor. Even ferries driving past.
Be aware that it can get COLD, as Melbourne cycles through it's "four seasons in one day". They have heaters, but that water is near and the wind can bite.
M. S.
One of my favourite places for a beer in Melbourne. Post car views. Can't be beat. Used to be dog cheap now they stiff you $7 for a can of Melbourne!
S. F.
Better if it was moared in a different spot as its too close to another bar on the river..yummy beagles there and beer and Cider was cold and on a very sunny melbourne day was a nice place for a drink...more beers on tap would be nice too
M. J.
Great bar when you can get a seat! It is often pretty busy here (especially on a nice day) so get here early. It is a great spot for people watching.
E. W.
Yummy cocktails, great location
A.
Looking good after a bit of a face lift. Good place to sit Riverside sipping a few cocktails
D. M.
If you've never been its well worth a visit. Friendly staff and great views.
O.
Amazing place to just sit and enjoy the scenery. It never gets overly busy so it is great to just enjoy a nice day and watch the boats and swans drift by
C. S.
Usually places with a 'to die for' location are a letdown, but not here. The food was simple but excellent, just like the mulled wine on a rainy day. Well worth the visit if your traipsing around the city looking for something different.
J. M.
Great vibe. Great water view. Private. Wasn't busy at all. Had heaters for warmth and service was fast :)
M. M.
Chilled out and relaxed. It was Monday lunch i suppose . But a cool little spot . Visited from Sydney. Great Nachos. Nice with a ponyfish ale 🍺🍺🍺
K. S.
Favourite bar in Melbourne so far
A. K.
Great views and amazing drinks to choose from. Nothing beats that it’s a place hanging on river and gives you a feel of being somewhere out of the crowd.
S. S.
This place is a gem! Right in the middle of the city and the river. Whenever someone new is in melbourne i always recommend them to go for some beers and just enjoy the view of the city.
P. H.
There's no bar like Ponyfish. Mojitos are top class and on a hot day with a good group of chatterboxes, you have a great day/night ahead.
P. D.
Nice place with a good view. there was a weird 10% surcharge when I was there which was annoying. Good choice for drinks. There weren't enough heaters for everyone so we were left somewhat cold unfortunately.
F. D.
Lovely spot in the city.
N. A.
Amazing bar right on the Yarra River.
A. P.
Yes! Yes!! Yes!!!
Gets crowded quick though which can be painful.
Has been known to be more sensitive to environmental issues, as it is literally situated on the Yarra River and has been known to flood.
N. K.
Very nice bar, friendly staff. Just little busy in the weekend 👍🏾
A. C.
Awesome cheese platter, great long ice tea! Portions are best for price in the area, plus adorably quirky atmosphere.
c. l.
Brilliant place, great atmosphere and amazing staff. Simon is however a wind up merchant ....an amazing host though. Diolch yn fawr simon I will be back. Lyn and ian cousin cheryl
A. C.
Great little after work or evening hang out. Always great music and relaxed atmosphere to just chill and take in the beautiful Yarra River, Southbank and Melbourne skyline.
I. M.
We had great time
B. w.
They need a new take on their cocktail range. Too hard to pronounce after you have had a few. Good views of the yarra tho.
M. O.
i love this place sm, i even tipped the staff because they did such a great job of making me feel included
M. W.
Unique, fun place to grab some amazing signature drinks to share and get a different perspective of the city! Can’t wait to come back on a summer night.
K. B.
A great little bar to hang out in the middle of the yarra river and watch the world go by. Drinks can be a little on the pricey side but that can be normal in the inner city bars.
W. F.
Very cool bar, although it's hard to get a seat sometimes. Great vibe, awesome friendly staff and nice location on the river!
M. C.
Love this place just on the Yarra. Nice selection of drinks and friendly staff. Could be really crowded during we.
p. s.
Nice cold beer in a chilled glass. Tasty food, nice staff.
R. W.
Would have got 5 stars but $11 a schooner is a bit of a rip....staff terrific though...
A.
Have drinks with wonderful view
P. J.
One of my favourite quirky bars. Best at sunset where you can sit and watch the city lights come on over the water.
D. E.
Unique location enjoyed the mulled wine
J. P.
Pretty chilled venue. No problems with seating. Beer cold and long necks good value.
M. S.
Iconic pub to visit. Now somewhat overshadowed by the very popular "Arbory" adjacent to Flinders station, it's still worth stopping in for a drink and experiencing the novelty of being in the middle of the river.
I. W.
NOVEL BAR "IN THE YARRA"
Ponyfish is a hip and friendly bar under the pedestrian bridge on the Yarra.
Fun place to relax, have drink and a bite to eat and watch the world go by.
Access via the bridge from either Southbank or Flinders St Station side of the river.
B. H.
Always great drinks. Friendly staff. Very cool location. Ultimate Sunday Sesh destination!
J. A.
The drinks were great and the atmosphere was good but with a few people down there, it gets pretty squishy. The staff at the time we were there didn't seem that friendly, but we were only their for a brief time.
E. O.
Super cool bar to have a few drinks, especially as the sun goes down! Good selection of cocktails and craft beers by the bottle 🍻
L. M.
Love to take friends and family here for unique bar in the middle of the Yarra. Mid winter mulled wine and heaters always a hit!!
T. D.
Love this place, fully recommend to anyone visiting Melbourne. It is now our new haunting place for when we are in Melbourne. Well done guys keep up the great service and don't change too much
A. J.
Nice cocktail, nice atmosphere
S. G.
Love this place! One of Melbourne's most iconic bars. Best time is summer.
A. C.
My all time favourite bar in the world, where you can have a quiet drink being a tourist but not feeling like a tourist, ultra friendly staff.
D. S.
Great place to catch up with mates. Staff & Service are 2nd to none. Best place for a drink in Melbourne on a lovely sunny day.
L. W.
It's cool and unique but can get packed at times. The food is more tapas than a full meal. It can flood in extreme weather events.
E. J.
Nice, relaxed spot if you need a break from the 'pinky out' vibe of Southbank. Friendly staff, awesome food & cocktails
T. F.
What a cool bar! Nestled right on the river, under a bridge, and easy to access. Little expensive but totally worth it for the views and vibe.
S. C.
Varied selection of spirits, beer and ciders. Mulled wine on a winters day is brilliant, food is decent and staff are friendly!
S. S.
Lovely place on the yarra. The place makes you feel good if your catching up with some one.
Don't expect food after 8, apparently kitchen closes.
S. W.
Amazing bar to relax and watch the world go by
J. D.
This place hasn't changed much since it opened, which is a good thing. Fair prices in a very cool location. A definite visit when we have visitors in town.
J. S.
Excellent place in the middle of the river for a beer in the sun. Awesome little venue with their own brew which is a must try.
T. T.
Good drinks and great Melbourne views
W.
Umm not bad. It’s an outdoor bar. The novelty is it’s in the middle of the river with a pretty good surround view.
t. c.
Nice location for a social drink with nice views of the river and plenty of water activity happening around you.
K. H.
Average bar and pretty pricey, but the location is what you pay for. A beautiful spot to sit and have a drink!
C. W.
Cute little bar built in the middle of the river. Great spot to catch a unique photo angle of the skyline
M. M.
Great place for summer if you are lucky enough to get a table. Cocktail jugs are the way to go!

An aeroplane in the heart of the city. Great view and $12 schooners
A. W.
Great to be drinking on the river
K. L.
Awesome spot with superb views. Definitely worth a drink or two if you're in town!
E. F.
Only Melbournians could Njoy this place, in the midst of winter stuck out in the middle of the bloody Yarra! I'd B lookin' 4 a nice waterin' hole with a nice log fire!
S. G.
Just kept going there, it's an interesting place to go have beer. Have their house beer for sure
A. P.
Nice little bar in the middle of the Yarra River off Evan Walker Bridge. Something different with a terrific view 🙂
C. J.
A fantastic little place hidden under an iconic Bridge on the yarra river. Quite a quirky place with their own beer, great views and perfect place to unwind
R. F.
Excellent place to grab a quick bite, a cold beer and watch a great sunset.
j.
Location is very unique, a cool vibe. Drinks may be a bit pricey
T. Y.
Look like a good place for meal but I never tried. Even I walking beside the seashore I am having a problem of being surrounded by flyers, and I suspect it will be more serious down the river.
J. A.
Awesome rocking bar, amazing in summer, IF you can get a spot. Staff are awesome and knowledgeable.
B. M.
Very busy little Bar. Great drinks at okay prices. Awesome views of the city at night.
C. L.
Funky little bar can get packed on warmer evenings but a fun place to meet friends all the same.

A nice relaxed bar with a really unusual location under the bridge. The selection of beer was good.
C. H.
Great spot to go for drinks on a nice and sunny day. Does get crowded though.

One of the best bars in the city for experiencing the atmosphere and views of Melbourne's southbank.

Great place to relax for a beer or 2. Does get busy but manageable

Great iconic Melbourne bar sitting on the river. This place is always busy and has a nice laid back atmosphere

J. B.
Location is great, but staff is a bit grumpy.

Great spot, inspiring location. Food not available all day which was bad for us. Only packet chips.
M. P.
Hard to beat its unique's sunset views right on the Yarra river. Good selection of wines, beers and tunes.
N.
Mixers are canned, ice tastes weird, but worth it for the location. Stick to wine/beer/neat spirits.
B. P.
Great vibe due to good music and quirky spot. The selection of drinks was plentiful.

Great experience overall

Great little place for a quick bite to eat, or a few drinks. It's very small, so seating and occupancy is very limited.

Trendy little bar, little pricey though. 2 beers and nachos cost $41.5
P. D.
Good spot on a good day.
E.
I love this place. Having a beer on the water is always relaxing.
N. M.
Best water front bar in Melbourne. Nothing like a good beer at night watching the lights bounce off the Yarra.

Great place for a drink but could be super windy
L. S.
Cool location to sit outside, nice menu of beers (unfortunately none on tap) and friendly staff.
R. P.
A unpretentious little oasis of cool between the commercialism of Southbank and the grottiness of Flinders Street. Right in the middle of the river, the location couldn't be better.
A. G.
This place is all about location, which is awesome. I wouldn't stay for a second drink though
D. K.
Packed and stunning at sunset on the Yarra for drinks and mix with the young and beautiful people of Melbourne.
S. C.
Great location, drink selkection. No hot food though but who cares it's a bar.
K. W.
Wonderful venue! Great location, good vibe, great drinks and great service.

Cool bar on the water. Something different and good spot for a drink or two.

Very good place to go to do something different, right prices and nice view. Always full.

Great location right on the river, the only one of its kind in Melbourne. Drinks but no coffee.

Great place to meet up with friends. Can be a little cold being on the yarra

Always a fun environment. Nice when you can get a seat looking at the Yarra.

Awesome spot for a drink. You may struggle for a seat tho. Needs more crafties.
