Cracking old school boozer with tons of character. Great choice of beers too. Nice to see plenty of folks grabbing a Saturday arvo beer with friends. Will be back for sure

Great tasting, huge pieces of fried chicken cooked fresh. This would have been one of Elvis' fave places! Add crispy beer battered chips on the side and I guarantee you'll be licking your fingers for more! The pieces are so big you may even have a doggy bag for later!

Had the Classic Chicken Burgher with extra Chilli….iceberg lettuce salad and Sweet potato fries. Eating companion had a double stack cheese burgher and we both said that they were quite possibly the BEST BURGHER’s we’ve ever had…big call I know but they were sensational. On a warm night, sitting outside enjoying a beer as well, would come close to the perfect Melb Burgher experience.

Awesome place to meetup for a quiet drink or rock out upstairs where some big names are often on offer (Christmas day has huge lineup). Its also the home of Sonny's outstanding spicy fried Chicken, hot, fresh and downright tasty.

Great dive bar vibe in Carlton, on the edge of the CBD. Downstairs is always pumping, with a reall buzz and humm in the air. There's always a crowd among this wooden bar with Upstairs always has a great selection of local and touring bands n offer. Classic band room with sticky floors, dark curtains hanging and a quirky staircase in the middle of the room. About 500 people can fit upstairs on a sold-out night. I love the $12 beer and shot combo - reminds me a lot of dive bars in America. Highly reccommend this place for a good night out with local bnds and local company. Maybe give upstairs a steam clean and pull the blinds for a nicer experience though?

Very nice interior with a chilled out vibe to the whole place. Beer garden is filled with comfy seating and areas to have a smoke. Staff that I spoke to were very helpful and gave some good suggestions for food and drink. The actual food and drink can vary from fairly priced, to a bit steep, especially if you're on a date or with people. Would recommend for the location close to public transport, and for the interior design. It's also a bit dark inside, but if you're hungover this is a godsend.

My boyfriend and I had our first date at The Curtin and the entire vibe built the foundation of our relationship. Seriously $15 for the best chicken sandwich with fries in town and their constant specials on jugs are so worth it. If you have a date here be careful cause you might fall in love...with the sandwiches at least 😉

Found this place by pure coincidence and it turned out being amazing! Awesome vibe, very cosy, live music, everyone enjoying! Will definitely recommend it to jazz lovers (even though I have never been to any of these I enjoyed it 100%) and everyone that wants to ditch the routine and have a good time!

Just... Disappointing quality of food for the price. Had a cheeseburger that was swimming in sauce. Only get it if you enjoy that sort of thing. Also had to wait over half and hour for my food when the guys across from me ordered and got theirs in 5 minutes... So so.e issues with quality and time management in the kitchen.

It's a dive student bar. If you're expecting that, it's fine. Decent range of beers, and food. They do "American" fried chicken Burgers and beef burgers, and it's pretty good quality food for a reasonable price. I've been there for lunch a few times now. Staff are friendly too.

You might struggle to find it listed as "The Curtin" and most likely will have more luck of you search against "Sonny's Fried chicken & burgers". Good basic fried chicken options. It's a basic bar, darkly lit with the exception of the big frontage windows overlooking Trades Hall building. Short walk from public transport. I like the character of this basic bar. It doesn't try to do anything over-the-top.

Interesting lighting arrangements in some parts of the Pub and I do question being able to book a table since I feel as though the pub experience isn't really something you book but interesting none the less. Food is pretty good and the alcohol is ,well alcohol.

the owner of this pub is a legend. best client i've had. Sonny's Fried Chicken & Burgers are delish. Drinks are cheap compared with most bars. Bands include some of triple Rs albums of the week and other truly loved original Australian artists. Staff are lovely. Very proud of this little pub and how it continues to grow.

Get the fried chicken! When they said it was a good sized portion, i was skeptical. I was wrong; it was big, juicy and delicious. Nice fries as well. For me, a whole bird, jug of beer and fries between 2 people was too much to finish.

Pretty cool venue but dear lord the toilets need work. Smell terrible and there wasn't any toilet paper the entire night. Staff need to regularly check that. Stock up on TP and put in a damn air freshener or two. Other than that, stage upstairs was great and the general vibe of the place was sick. Just a shame about the toilets.

It has been a couple of years since I ventured to The John Curtin for lunch. While they always had cheap deals going, the food was never all that great, so I stopped going. All that has changed and the place is actually quite cool now, no more old man pub atmosphere. The music and the food have vastly improved, this could become a regular lunch venue. Later that night I also popped back for the gig, and the upstairs room is a great band room. Looking forward to many more in the future. Great to see at a time when live music venues are closing rather than opening.

A hard day protecting workers rights and supporting the Union movement works up a big thirst, so pop over from Trades Hall and sink some cans with the ghost of Gough. Classic pub with good vibes and a solid bandroom. If wanna get down and dirty with a bird you can do it here, and I'm talking chicken. Sonny's operate the kitchen and it's the best Kentucky Fried you'll sink your teeth into, unless you drop in to Kentucky. Staff are all complete guns and know how to help you have a good time. Drinks are cheap and quality, you don't have to settle for garbage swill here if you only have pennies. Though they may oblige if you really desire. 5 stars.

John Curtin is one of my locals for a few very good reasons. It's got a great rock pub atmosphere and it's actually close enough to the CBD to walk there from Parliament station or grab a uni tram up. They have live bands almost every night in there band-room upstairs which is really large and decked out well, with it's own bar and facils. Downstairs you get to enjoy a good pub vibe, but with great music playing and normally a great japanese horror movie playing silently on the projector screen. The staff are great and the locals are all musos, uni kids and guys with beards and tattoos that makes me feel at home. The kitchen is back online and they are doing the pub classic, like burgers, parmas as well as some more exotic dishes like pork belly rolls and spicy shrimp, which are all done very well. On Tuesday they have a free trivia night and Sunday session when you can lounge out the front in the sun and enjoy $13 jugs all day. Great place to catch up with a mate or be like myself and just go for a solo session and talk to the cool bartenders like Reese and Rusty! Honestly if you're looking for a pub rather than a bar this is the best one in the Melbourne surrounds.
