Comments of The Mitre Tavern
A. Z.
Okay this review is not about the drink as I didn't go for the alcohol eventhough it is a pub. I was there on a Monday night 6pm and wow, it was busy! Must be people going for drink after work.. we were there at the back of the building having a private section. I give it good review for the calamari that I had. I was impressed, I didn't think pub food can be good! The fish and chips though not something I would order here. And thanks for the salad!!
D. M.
We dined at the upstairs steakhouse part which was lovely, it is a nice area with a private feeling to it. The staff were welcoming and polite and service was good, the steaks were phenomenonal but just keep in mind it is a high quality steak which is paired with the fitting price. Would recommend 👍
P. L.
I have frequented both the Tavern (downstairs) and the Steakhouse (upstairs) several times, both are five star experiences. I believe the steaks are some of the nicest in Melbourne and the extensive wine list and service match. Downstairs the tavern offers a boisterous, enjoyable atmosphere, both inside and outside. Alex and the team are always professional, friendly and entertaining, great options for formal meetings or important catchups as well as a casual beer with a mate.
J. A.
Great place to come and have drinks and food. Have only had the steaks here, but they have always been cooked to perfection. The service is always friendly and the meals are always brought out in a timely manner.
G. M.
Food was quite nice pub fare albeit a little on the pricey side however some of the people in our group waited over 45 minutes for their food to arrive. Perhaps a understaffed on the day, not sure. Staff were lovely though and they have a good selection of beers etc to enjoy with your food.
B. G.
Absolutely fantastic steaks, drinks and desserts. The table setup and environment are great.
S. L.
This place really has it together. Fair priced food which is served very quickly. Very tasty too. Hardly a wait at the bar for drinks although they were quite busy.
M. E.
Always enjoy visiting the Mitre. Great area to enjoy food and drink outside plus a range of spaces indoors. A good pub menu, loved the beef and guiness pie, super range of beers and a quality wine list. Friendly, helpful and pleasant staff
A. H.
It’s okay. Cozy old school interior. Standard pub food. Burger took a long time to come out, patty was closer to a meatball in texture but not terrible, very messy to eat. Waffle fries are always a winner
C. H.
Great charm and character, good buzz on a Friday night. Good range of beers including Kilkenny. Offering free sausage sandwiches , great incentive to stay.
Y. A.
Fascinating history and amazing building hidden in the CBD! Chicken Parma was very tasty and had generous portions. A wide selection of drinks at the bar too. Great value and highly recommend this place for a memorable night!
D. B.
Well organisedCOVID-19 protocols. Clean surroundings. Great Pub meals for lunch. Many beers on tap. Good for large groups in beer garden.
S. S.
Old as gold. Quirky interior and hidden away from Collins St in a lane way. Mitre Tarven is Mighty Tavern!!!!!!! 20+ selections of beers on tap and good selection of reds. Crazy busy place and amazingly very less wait on food orders. A place to visit!!!!!!
A. F.
First time having drinks at the Mitre, service was good, share foods were fresh hot and tasty (wings, popcorn chicken, spring rolls, calamari, chips). Would highly recommend.
J. A.
My favourite place in Melbourne at the moment, really good variety of beers, the hot wings are the best in the city, the staff is very friendly, the service is good and fast, the music is totally of my taste in a good volume... The atmosphere is cosy and friendly... Every corner is photogenic experience inside and outside
A. W.
Really awesome venue! Surprisingly extensive wine list and lovely staff to talk you through it. Cool vibe and friendly venue!
T. B.
Mitre Tavern upstairs is often overlooked as it gets confused with the downstairs pub, which is a very different offering. Pricing is on par with other steak restaurants ($50 plus with no sides) so don’t expect a cheap feed. On this visit I tried the onion soup (recommended), grass fed eye fillet (250g) and Creme brûlée to finish. The steak was cooked to perfection, and was pleasantly surprised by the larger than expect portion size of the Creme brûlée. I’m not normally a soup fan, but the Onion soup is always a favourite here. Recommend booking as this place can get busy at peak times. Has the feeling of an old English pub with high ceilings. Inside seating only. Recommend giving this a try.
P. W.
Classic 19th century pub with good service, wide range of beers on tap and wines by glass, with excellent food too. Really can't go wrong here!
J. S.
Great place for a quick drink in CBD, with a good variety of local beers. Can get packed in the evening.
N. G.
This place is great, tucked away in the middle of the city has that old world pub charm. Definitely recommend if you're on a city walking tour or just want to unwind with a beer. Great selection of drinks, and the hot chips were great too! Staff are friendly and accommodating 😊
D. W.
Would get one additional star if they had a happy hour. Otherwise this is such a cute little pub, feels like stepping back in time right in the middle of the city.
V. C.
Tasty steaks! 200g minute steak served with thick crunchy chips and side salad chased with a McCracken dark ale hit the spot. Good size and great taste
H. B.
Fantastic food, great service and an amazing location. The Mitre Tavern is the place to be to experience traditional Melbourne hospitality.
O. F.
Great atmosphere. Great and friendly staff. Easy to order. Upstairs restaurant was very good.
S. D.
Great place for a drink. Outdoor & indoor seating. Food looked good too.
W. S.
Good spot for a cosy pint. A great selection of beers and plenty of bar snacks.
A. 2.
Great little pub! One of Melbourne's oldest if not the oldest.
T. H.
Stone & Wood on tap and decent food too. Can get very crowded on a Friday, but I guess that's because it's a popular place.
a. s.
Enjoyed being there especially for a get together with others that we had not seen each other for years. Well done for The Mitre Tavern.
R. B.
Great old English pub feel. Range of beers on tap and aesthetics are great
T.
Cold beers and a thriving environment for after-work drinks. The steak house upstairs is outstanding
H. H.
Wide variety of drinks to explore. Staff was friendly and serving portions were huge. Heads up though cause last call when I went (on a Saturday) was at 10pm.
e. m.
Great place to have drinks after work . Always packed, especially on Fridays. Great vibe
Z.
Great selection of drinks and food, cheap lunchtime fare and great service.
Hidden away in a quiet lane way (Bank Pl) it would be a mistake to pass this by.
D. W.
Typical pub meal. Very crowded. More suited for just having a drink
Y.
Service was good, each platter of food was very generous and tasted great!
Loved the lively atmosphere.
C. K.
Awesome pub with warmth, charm and good prices for food and drinks. Staff were easy to talk to and welcoming. Good chicken parmi.
P. F.
So glad I finally got to visit this iconic Melbourne Tavern!! Built in the 1850s it's one of Melbourne's oldest buildings. Well worth a visit, take a look around and grab a meal or a beer. Has a fantastic steak house on the top story. Recommend visiting.
A. R.
very friendly staff especially the girl at service was great and am gay so she was really great and friendly and welcoming
W.
A bit loud, but that's just my ears lol
Great food and drink, plus a terrific steakhouse upstairs :)
J. S.
Great old pub. Good spot for a quick lunch
X. X.
Awesome place to drink, super friendly staff. Has a nice old school pub vibe. Pretty sure it’s haunted but in a fun, not scary way. Great spot for after work drinks, beers with the boys, drinks with the girls, all your drinking needs. X
S. D.
Lots of beer on tap, good food. Can't fault it for after work drinks.
K. K.
Nice little pub in Melbourne good place to go to watch sports.
The day I was there they handed out free sauceges and bread.
Super nice staff and good prices.
P. T.
Amazing environment, excellent food, open bar with variety of drinks. I love this place.
A. M.
Nice outside area and a good selection of beers.
J. T.
Maybe its time to go back there again, after some long hiatus.
G. C.
Lovely pub food with class. Great service. Would definitely go back after restrictions are lifted.
D. B.
By far my favourite tavern in Melbourne. It’s out of the way, tucked in amongst towering buildings that has managed to hold its own to its own sense of time, space and history. I believe it is one of, if not the, oldest buildings in Melbourne. And sitting inside you really get that feeling. The venue is peppered with historical pictures, advertisements and paintings - items you simply won’t find anywhere else outside of a museum perhaps. The history and nostalgia aside, this is a first class venue in every sense of the word!
The staff are extremely accomodating, jovial and merry even when they are flat out busy- I love that!.
The drinks are reasonably priced and the food is supreme! There is a first class and world class fine-dining steakhouse upstairs and I believe it is the premier steakhouse in Victoria- so bring your Wallet - it ain’t cheap (lol) but certainly worth every cent.
On a more ‘down to earth’ level, you won’t be disappointed by the food downstairs in the bar/tavern itself. The minute steak and the apple and rhubarb pie are simply divine and won’t cost you a fortune either. Personal favourites.
I highly recommend you at least visit this place once and I’m sure you’ll be back regularly as I, and very many others, most certainly do. Enjoy!
L. S.
Great for after work drinks, walk by and recognise colleagues. The house beer is good and cheap. Couple of jugs will get you started. Haven't done lunch there in ages (before bat cough) so not sure if the chicken in pyjamas is still up to scratch.
s. k.
Looks Very historical ..spacious and big staff..liked ambiance..has lot of variety on menu..surprised by their service..food was reached table before i reached the table from ordering at counter.
Had salmon.bitnoily but liked it..it has rice and salad which is my favourite combination bcse it has carbs greens and yummy salmon.
Definitely visit again
S. H.
Located in the middle of the city... this little pub takes you back in time. Such an amazing piece of history! Service and great food is an added bonus! Highly recommend!
V. B.
Great steak, cooked the way you like. Really tasty sides. The closest to an old English pub you will find south of Sydney. Charming hosts, too.
D. W.
Cold beer and good pub food - what more could you ask for!
L. D.
Fabulous atmosphere. Food was delicious, usual pub fare with a few additional menu items. I tried the salmon tikka, so delicious. Great relaxed venue, hidden away in the city, well worth a visit.
J. P.
Pretty cool looking place. Food was good. Staff were friendly.
D. G.
Character filled old Melbourne city pub with 4 sided central bar. Good selection of beers on tap. FYI, only one side of the 4 sided bar was in operation last Friday night. All the punters were condensed on the northern side, you might be ignored for a while by staff (u will require ESP to work this out as there are no signs) and not an ideal COVID Safe practice.
A. C.
Traditional officeworkers pub in Melbournes CBD. Having a beer outside in the lane way is almost a rite of passage for many. Especially on a Friday night. Food is good and a broad range of beers. It is Melbournes oldest hotel license (I think) and worth sticking your head in for a look.
S. R.
Great food. Great Beer. Good times
C. P.
The steak was a little burned and bad a lot of butter taste when we had it. Pricing is the same as normal steak house. Good vibe though.
R. C.
The food is the best part of this spot, that and the interior being quite cosy. The venue was a bit messy when I visited first, and the second and the third time. I understand that this happens sometimes, but it is worth noting.
Its a fine spot for a fairly priced bevaroochiedor so I cannot complain too mich.
D. S.
Super delicious steaks here. Courteous staff. Will definitely come back.
M. B.
Apparently this is the oldest continuously operated pub in Melbourne, with a fantastic 19th century period interior. Very good lunch menu with huge burgers, parms and fish & chips. Food was tasty and quick!
F. M.
This place is a quant, traditional English style pub with a warm feel, located in a quiet alley, grab a pint or a pub meal, service with a smile
L. Y.
We were sitting in the outdoor area on the side and, despite not being close to anyone smoking, the smoke smell really hangs around.
Really good selection of drinks though and we’ll be back, maybe just sitting inside instead.
L. B.
Very nice atmosphere, as close to an English pub as possible. Food enjoyable and staff were friendly.
P. L.
Steak was good but the service was sub-standard, for a table of fifteen they didn't write down the orders and managed to get two orders incorrect
D. S.
My favourite pub in Melbourne. Always use this place as a great meeting place for friends & family. Staff, food & drinks are awesome at the Mitre Tavern.
M. C.
Great place for a short break. Good options for drinking . Outside seating available.
J. V.
Not a bad pub for a quick lunch or for a drink after work. The service is good, staff are friendly. The food is okay, nothing fancy but it gets served quickly and tastes okay. It's not a super comfy place and isn't very "upscale" and has more of a stop by for a drink after work type feel to it.
I. A.
The staff were really friendly and I'm amazed how they can keep their attitudes in peak hours. They were making sure we were enjoying the food and gave great recommendations. Service is relatively fast at about 10-20 minutes and when asked, they did warn it may take about 20 minutes and our dishes arrived before that.
I had the 200g minute steak. It was cooked to perfection and for it's price it's definitely worth it .Very tender and good amount of grill taste and not dry at all.
In general everything was cooked perfectly
Good service, good food, highly recommended
Note, theres a steakhouse upstairs and I've only tried food downstairs
A. M. K.
Interesting place, wouldn't be my choice for a time out.
Y. P.
Good beer and wedges. Very busy for Friday night. Only problem is there's no happy hour
S. M.
Attended the steakhouse this evening. Was a bit confused about which point of entry we should use, and so asked a waitress. She confirmed we were at the right entrance but had to leave us as she was quite busy. Waved down another woman after a short while when we couldn't get anyone else's attention. Explained that we had a booking at 8 for two at the steakhouse upstairs. She followed that up with asking if we had a booking...
After probably about 5 attempts of explaining we were there for steak upstairs, she took us to the reservation book and couldn't find us. I then showed her the Quandoo booking I'd made and then she proceeded with "oh you're upstairs". 🙃 couldn't have been clearer if I tried. It did not seem that English may have not been her second language as she never tried to clarify any of what I said. Anywho, we were whisked upstairs. Greeted by front of house staff upstairs, all of whom were cordial and polite, and did their best to cater for us. Decor was amazing, it had a very decadent vibe. Our steaks were quite nice, however I have had better elsewhere (funnily enough in Fairhaven). Very disappointed to learn they don't have a non-alcoholic menu. My partner and I don't drink very much and were quite disappointed when told there was only soda and orange juice (not sure how wide and varied the soda range is, so this may be an underserved critique). Upon exiting I saw other non-alcoholic drinks behind the counter that were not mentioned (different juice and cascade drinks, however they might've been the alcoholic range). I was slightly disappointed, but I would recommend giving a shot as this may have been an off night. Would give 3 and a half stars if possible.
M. W.
Great cute antiquated place, good friendly staff.
Love the beef burger just wish i could eat it all !!
J. B.
Good food, good service, good atmosphere!
P. J.
12/10 come here.
The upstairs Steakhouse and Grill at The Mitre is a surprising and delicious spot in Melbourne. If you're like me, you've lived in Melbourne forever and never realised there was more to The Mitre than the downstairs pub. I came here for the first time a yearish ago for a work lunch. I just brought my friend here for a birthday dinner. Both times I have had delicious food and AMAZING service. The sides are varied, plentiful and generous. The steaks are perfectly cooked every time and delicious. The service is beyond compare.
A. D. V.
Great service even with a full house - great work by everyone!
D. A.
Decent drinks. Gets pretty noisy but the atmosphere is overall great. Food is a bit on the expensive side but taste profile is great
T. K.
Nice old pub. Terrible beer selection
H. S.
Lovely venue with plenty of beer to choose from and a Kitchen open till 10pm. The food was excellent and had great portions. So many great seating areas to hang out in and enjoy a tasty beer with friends. Well worth visiting for your next night out.
W. C.
Good choice of beers, nice place ....
O. K.
Nice place to drink and eat in the city. ❤️
J. M.
Great venue. Hard to find an old school English pub aesthetic that's authentic. And with good staff.
T. M.
Have frequented The Mitre Tavern on and off since the 1980s, great venue to catch up with friends for a drink after work.
D. F.
I like the fact that this pub, and it clearly a pub rather than a bar, exists, as it is increasingly becoming towered over by the neighbouring high rises, but its dark and cosy, when my own personal taste is light and airy. The food is constantly good though; I frequent it quite a lot with a large crowd who always eat, and there have just been just a couple of poor dishes, so not a bad hit to miss ratio. Decent selection on taps and an extensive wine list. The outside area is usually packed. And disappointingly smokey.
J. V.
Very good steaks, all cooked as requested. The setting and atmosphere are good and the service is friendly and competent. That said, there was a bit of inflexibility: one of the starters is available for 2 or 4 to share, but we asked for a 3 person serve. 'No can do'. Go figure. Below par coffee too. Overall, though, this was a good dining experience and definitely worth repeating. 4.5
C. R.
This iconic pub has been a hit spot for after work drinks and a meeting place to start a big night out.
For me I love the outdoor area, with plenty of room for a good size group and bar staff who know how to get drinks out quickly.
Had a nice work lunch here and the food was a bit above honest pub food.
A. W.
Always busy and tables can be hard to find. Bookings advised. Drinks are pricey and typical for Melbourne, but good selection beer on tap. Decor fits the theme and some outdoor dining available. Can cater large groups.
S. G.
Solid place! Love coming here. Great selection of beers and awesome hospitality.
N. S.
Ate at the steakhouse upstairs. Great service by the staff, very warm and friendly. Had the Riverina Scotch Fillet which was cooked perfectly. Sides were very nice and a great accompaniment. Came out quickly enough that you weren't waiting, but not too fast that it was rushed. Highly recommended.
J. R.
A quaint pub for a meal or drink. Staff are very helpful and friendly, offering advice on beer selection or just a chat.
Seating options are varied for inside and out, both offering great atmosphere.
Good beer options as well, with something for everyone. Food options as you'd expect and good quality.
S. K.
This is the first time in my life I have eaten at one restaurant three days in a row. My first hattrick of Dining. I ordered the minute steak from the bar and it is unbelievably good. With Chips and salad and a great gravy.
If you are in town make the effort and have a beer and steak there.
The staff are amazing and made the 3 visits there an experience to remember
P. O.
Excellent steak in the upstairs steak restaurant.
D. A.
Spent way too much time here over the years. Great staff, food, wide array of beers and wine. Nice outdoor area, rare in the city, but has unfortunately lost a bit of its vibe since the "no smoking in eating areas" law happened. I hoped they'd at least allow smoking/vaping when the kitchen is closed, or restrict eating to inside. Not that I'm condoning smoking, but that was a lot of the reason many people went there
K. L.
Set in the hart of Melbourne this tavern started life as a hunting loadge in the 1800's. With modern clean feel the tavern is relaxing. Meals are available and I would recommend the fish and chips. There is an good selection of beers and plenty of room for groups in the outdoor area.
A. N.
This is Melbourne's oldest pub and it definitely has that appeal. It is a gorgeous venue and saturated with that warm, old-english pub vibe. Staff are amazing! Food is huge. Busy every night if the week. Great trivia here as well.
L. F.
If your are looking for a pint in a traditional pub then got couldn't go wrong with The Mitre Tavern. It had heeps of character and the beer is good as well. Also if you are looking for somewhere to have a drink and sir outside it is great you are away from the main roads and the patio heaters are on when there is a chill.
M. B.
A Melbourne institution, great vibe, great selection of brews, great food that comes out fast. Everything you'd want in a pub.
If you're really hungry, get the BBQ parma, you won't be disappointed. They have specials that I think changes every week and quite delicious and fresh.
Service is great and attentive. Can get a bit loud at times if you just want to chat but early week is much quieter.
j. h.
Awesome staff. Awesome night and great food. We had a meet up there and it was honestly the perfect place for it. Real pub food, the kind I wish Collingwood pubs would serve. None of this chips on the side nonsense. Chips are standard fair dart.
T. s.
My TOP Guinness draught in CBD…
S. C.
Best pub in melbourne. I go here regularly either for a quick lunch or a great steak upstairs. Or a pint! Mmmmmmmmm highly recommend
호. 여. 옥.
It has amazing food and great mood :-)
A. M.
Had dinner here on Saturday and it was great quality! Wasn't very busy but with food like this it should be. Meal sizes are generous and steaks were all perfectly cooked. Only fault we had was the table was too small for three of us. Other than that a perfect night and will definitely be back
T. M.
Nice atmosphere in this tavern. Staff is really nice and will help you in need. Fingerfood with beer was pretty good. Having a beer while chatting, I would choose this place gladly again.
K. Y.
Good menu. Unfortunately the acoustics with the live band that evening was a little louder than we would like and service was very slow (may have been a big night for them since one order was missed .. whoops) We were here for a family dinner catch up. The extra loud entertainment made conversation difficult. Apart from that not a bad place for a pub meal.
B. J.
Great food. Great service, I thought the staff having their break and eating dinner at the bar was a real highlight 😍
L. R.
A Melbourne Institution. If you want to see lawyers, stock brokers & every other city based occupation in its home environment, then you will love it here. Full of genuine old school characters. Food upstairs is really impressive. Food downstairs is good English pub food. Always fun & always humming.
H. T.
Old school no-frills pub. It’s a sausage fest. I only saw two other women.
Tradies mixed with corporate types, disproportionate amount of patrons seem to be smokers. I rather like it: relaxed place with cheap drinks.
J. G.
The quintessential Melbourne stockbrokers haunt. Pretty good food, good beer selection, great selection of liquor, some good wines, and plenty of folks in suits. The chips are great and reasonably priced as is the list of mains on the menu.
Great place for after work drinks, can get a little crowded though.
B. C.
Hadn't been here for years and not much has changed. Louise has passed on to that great bar in the sky for a well earned rest. Sadly Dennis the Deer has gone from Dennis' bar, but the loos still have the cheesy limericks. The 7 pot beer urns are a great idea. Still a great pub and Melbourne icon.
H. N. B.
Well your in one of the historic place. Its located in center of Melbourne city, you have easy access by public transport,
Parking is bit of challenging topic, but you can spent money to park in private car parkings.
They have very good menus items, enjoy while having a beer. Remember to call in advance and book your table, its get busy without knowing any reason, due to group visits, like wise office crowd on the lunch. Enjoy and be proud to be there.
A. B.
Excellent food. Excellent service. Just that the wagyu rump (8+) was not as tasty as expected. Still cannot come down to 4 stars for the service.
A. K.
Good pub food beer and atmosphere.
Friendly staff too
Only downside is massive amount of cigarette smokers who pollute the outside areas
C. P.
Great vibes and super friendly staff.
A. H.
Quite a lot of seating out the back. Good selection of beers and food. There were a few screens around showing a few different games of footy. Parmas are decent size, consider sharing if you aren't a huge eater
S. C.
Food was good. Ordered a Parma and a beer. Service is good but it took a while longer than I expected to get the food. The ordering process at the bar can be improved; people didn't understand if there was a queue and where it began.
K. V.
I love this place. A local gem with plenty of good pub grub!
c. n.
Beautiful steaks
R. D.
Good pub, reminds me of one back in central London
C. L.
Great pub; lovely britannic atmosphere. Staff is really friendly.
L. D.
Great atmosphere, super quick service.
S. A.
Great pub
T. N.
Beautiful atmosphere and well prepared food. Staff is very friendly and attentive.
H. s.
Great place to go drink very relaxing old school feel
S. D.
Iconic pub, great beer and food.
C. A.
Good place for a cheap ish bite in central Melbourne. A fairly standard selection of lagers and craft like beers. Not sure I would be returning to this venue any time soon though... Just not that memorable.
R. D.
A Traditional Steak House, upstairs at the Mitre Tavern, Banks pl. Excellent, service, cuisine, ambience and wine list!!!
A. S.
Perfect spot for an after-work pint or two. Housed in the oldest building in Melbourne, it is steeped in history and charm. Massive beer garden out front, in the charming laneway, is always a winner.
Food is good quality pub fare, with the steakhouse up stairs for those after something more refined.
K.
Decent service, good food, and a great wine selection. The dry-aged rib-eye sadly did not taste dry-aged at all, but it was still cooked quite well. The rest of the meal felt rather unremarkable. It may have been my casual dress, but the service was obligational.
m.
Great food in an old-school historic pub, with great old-school service to boot, specially by Pia, Conan and young but wise and very good looking Cal. Mr Mitre must be loaded! Great to hear they're becoming more sustainable which is totes grouse news!
A must visit/eat/drink place for locals and tourists alike YUMMO 😋
S. N.
Had a lovely meal upstairs in the Steakhouse on 13/6/2015 with great service from Greg and Dan. My husband and l shared the steak platter for 2 and had chocolate mousse for dessert. If you don't like coffee, ask for the chocolate mousse without the coffee sprinkled on top. Loved the mousse, didn't like the coffee on the top would have preferred it to be written on the menu. Lovely atmosphere and fantastic service, will come again.
W. S.
Had a great night with some work friends at The Mitre Tavern, We were going to meet for drinks, however one of my workmates had dinned up stairs in the Steakhouse before and recommended we all give it a try, we had a great time. The food and service were both top notch. I will be back again for a steak, although have to confess I love the hustle and bustle of downstairs. Keep up the good work guys.

I only go for the quiz on Tuesday evenings, and I've been going on and off for years. Decent standard pub food, decent standard beers (nothing too fancy) and a nice cosy atmosphere to get away from the winter cold. Dominated by the after-work office crowd but that's not too bad. Will not be an choice that offends anyone. Outdoor heated areas are ok too. Beer garden is ok in summer, but again nothing too fancy.
S. F.
Found this little gem by accident! So glad that we did. Lots of history and charm. Our fish'n'chips plates were huge and delicious!
I. A.
Still one of the best steak houses in Melbourne.
Excellent wine list, steak selection is awesome, and we'll priced, and I can't go past the cauliflower and blue cheese as a side along with the steak fries...
A post lunch beverage around the barrels downstairs is a fabulous way to finish.
A. W.
I just loved the outdoor seating.
It's a great place to just slow down away from the busy city centre.
You'll certainly enjoy their quality wines too.
They're my only go to place for after work drinks.
K. V.
I love this place. A local gem with plenty of good pub grub!
K. B.
Had a lot of fun at my first pub experience in Australia. Food was great and the portion were large. Bring a big appetite because you will love the food. Customer service was great too!
S. M.
Despite a first impression of the Mitre Tavern as an after-work pint pub (nothing wrong with that: the laneway patio is perfect for it, and it's always super crowded on a Friday afternoon), a steak dinner in the restaurant upstairs was a pleasant surprise.
The food is very high quality English pub food, with great atmosphere and good service. Our party was slightly larger than the booking, and an extra person was accommodated cheerfully -- and when one of the group had to leave (an emergency) after ordering food, they were good enough not to charge him.
P. S.
Fantastic service. Good laugh with the guys and girls behind the bar. Felt very welcome. As for the food....the beef burger would be one of the best I've had. My wife had the ploughmans platter. Very impressive. Very fresh. Very tasty.
M. T. C.
Four stars, largely on the basis of the great venue and pleasant after-hours vibe.
I've been going for years. Although it does have that irksome 'professional pub management' thing against it, The Mitre remains a great little hidden corner of Old Melbourne.
There's a decent selection of beers at the usual sort of price (for which you can thank government, more than business).
The Mitre can have quite a mixed crowd on any given day, although on Friday afternoons you can expect the financial services lads to be here in force - and quite a pleasant change it is, to be out on the town and see grown-ups dressed like grown-ups and having a fine old time. There's nothing stuffy or precious about the place.
Well worth a visit if you're in the neighbourhood.
M. S.
Awesome steaks! Great wine list! And a part of Melbourne for over 100 years! Unmissable!
T.
Over the years, The Mitre Tavern has always been a great popular place for a few beers, a laugh and to watch some sport. Great to have such good consistency in the city.
A. S.
Wonderful steakhouse takes you back to the old days with it's unique decoration, worm hospitality of the staff and fantastic food.
In bistro they have a fantastic hamburger you shouldn't miss, especially the Moroccan lamb one, it's amazing. You can enjoy the sport activities on huge TV screens they have.
A. G.
Great place to hang out with mates for drinks. Food is good but a little on the small side for what you order. Great quality however.
A. U.
Great pub in Melbourne CBD. Staff totally ignore the smoking laws which is great news for smokers. Melbourne City Council totally dropped the ball too not policing at all. Rate payers totally getting their monies worth 😂
C. S.
A classic old style pub in the heart of the Melbourne CBD. As lockdown eased, they definitely made the most of their space and time constraints concerned
C. B.
Good selection of beer and friendly staff. The steak sandwich was decent, although it won't be winning any awards. Pricing is a bit on the higher side although nothing too outrageous.
D. W.
A very nice and comfortable place to have a meal....prices are very reasonable and the service was excellent. The food portions were very ample to the point of it was a struggle to finish the meal. The location is out of the way so you don't have the hustle and bustle of other venues which is a big plus...definitely coming back.
L. A.
Awesome place to catch up with friends.
S. B.
Best pub in the CBD. Wide selection of beers, great meals, friendly staff. But it's the little things — like free bowls of popcorn and little morsels of food — that make the Mitre special.
J. S.
We ate at the steak house upstairs. Amazing service. Steak was cooked to perfection. The staff we so attentive, never needed to ask for a drink. Looking forward to coming back real soon.
C. H.
The old lady of Bank Pl. Has had a number of makeovers over the years and competes well with those of her ilk in most departments. The food's improved, as has the service. They dabble with different event servings and giveaways to keep your interest up and your wallet open and overall keep the party going. Over the years, the crowds have thinned out slightly, but there was a most respectable bustle and noise-level through the evening. One factor that's not been paid too much attention are the men's loos which are not much less disgusting that they were 20 years ago. This notwithstanding, the Mitre holds its own with other city beer joints. Note, this was an evening drinking visit so cannot comment on the upstairs steak-house.
I. H.
Olde world bar downstairs. Excellent steak restaurant upstairs. Enjoyed a wonderful meal with friends. Steak cooked to perfection; extensive wine list. Outstanding staff. Highly recommended.
A. B.
Nice Parma and it is good to see a few more people out and about in the city for lunch.
N. K.
Cozy pub situated between the Collins and the Little Collins Street in the heart of Melbourne CBD. The pub has the old style architecture and settings that reminds you of the pubs in UK. A good selection of beers are available along with wines, whiskeys and other alcoholic drinks. Pub food is available, albeit the food is expensive. It is generally busy on Friday evenings; packed with office crowd from nearby offices.
W. R.
Food's ok, good beer selection. Clientele mainly consists of suits, especially on a Friday evening. Which is great if you like conversations about business or that sort of thing.
S. F.
Good atmosphere and can be very busy Thursday and Friday. Outdoor area has gas heaters in winter. Pub meals good and upstairs steakhouse is worth a try.
b.
Disappointing. If you charge $54 dollars for a steak with no sides it must be quality. Mine was far from it.
May have been an off night.
G. E.
Its a proper pub in the middle of Melbourne. What's not to like?
C.
A half decent pub. Visited just after St Pat's day, so the alley was a little pungent, but the staff were friendly and the beer well poured. Toilets are a bit of a trek to find.
D. B.
Nice part of town for after work drinks. Quaint little pub with a big selection. But one star removed because they offer something free yet it is only free when they have it in stock 😕 i.e. consider taking the free sign down when not available.
J. M.
Great food with great service
I. C.
Sam behind the bar is a legend. Knows his stuff, good banter or a chat. He helps make The Mitre as it should be.
I can stand at the bar and finish my pint at my leisure, with attentive service, a chat, or space as is needed.
Top pub.
N. M.
The best fillet mignon I've had for years!
Sticky date pudding was delicious and the Mrs fell in love with the espresso martini.
The service was awesome to say the least and what a beautiful old building.
S. B.
Great steaks. Perfectly cooked, great service. Always busy you must book if you want a seat. Nice range of mustards and sauces. 10/10 would go again
S. B.
Brilliant pub especially for watching the footy while enjoying a beer
D. B.
Outstanding meals and prices lovely staff very helpful highly recommended
R. D.
Good pub, reminds me of one back in central London
S. H.
Great old pub with excellent steakhouse restaurant upstairs. Wonderful atmosphere.
C. B.
Great afternoon, great food, nice cold beer!
C. W.
Nicer than I immediately thought, the meals were worth the price. Nice pub atmosphere with quite a range on tap. Will recommend.
D. N.
For lunch in a Friday, fast service, meals come in minutes. Staff are friendly. Food is tasty and the Guinness is up to scratch.
O. S.
Great pub, very good for a casual lunch/dinner and a good bottle of wine. Meal sizes are large and quality very good. The Beef Pie and Chicken Parmigiana were fantastic!
A. T.
Great for after work drinks if you are an office type. Don't expect fancy cocktails but standard beer and wine. Typical pub food not sure about the stake restaurant.
R. C.
Very decent selection of beers and we got the best chips in Melbourne when we went there for dinner while it was fairly quite.
Love the atmosphere of a place with real character.
T. N.
Beautiful atmosphere and well prepared food. Staff is very friendly and attentive.
R. E.
Fantastic place, warm and very friendly staff, perfect for Friday night drinks with friends / gets busy though
D. G.
High-end steak house. Expect the best
J. R.
Food great and good selection of beers
A. D.
Nice bar for Friday drinks. Great, friendly bar service with enough people on so there aren’t many cues. Free sausages in bread is a bonus!
C. L.
Great pub; lovely britannic atmosphere. Staff is really friendly.
C. D. (.
The steak was great! I had a porterhouse (rare), and mash potato with green beans.
The steak was absolutely awesome. The taste and quality of the meat was the best I've had yet in Aus. The mashed potato was incredible, and the gren beans even had a taste of their own.
I highly recommend the Mitre Tavern for it's meat and mash!
T. F.
Went here for work Christmas party, great atmosphere and food. We were set up in an outside table area. The food was great and the espresso martini was really good too
R. “.
Great venue during the day and after work. Food is good and fast although the beers are overpriced. Two pints of Asahi $30
M. O.
Very good food and service. Great desserts. Nice to be able to enjoy the lovely old building. We dined upstairs.
S. B.
How can anyone pass on this Melbourne icon. The pub has served the Melbourne CBD for what feels like forever. Friday nights are packed, especially in summer. It's hard to believe this back alley bar has survived everything Melbourne could throw at it, from financial crises to brawls. A business trip to Melbourne isn't complete without at least one point at the Mitre
D. K.
I went here recenty for the firat time and returned last night with some friends due to the service and welcoming atmosphere. Good food, range of beers and great staff!
D. C.
Good place. Nice food. Good selection of beers
S. K. V.
Good selection of beer, great pub environment. Central location, Decent pub food, good outdoor area. Gets really busy in the evenings especially fridays.
M. S.
Great location for a beer and a chat over dinner. Melbourne’s oldest pub is so worth a visit so do yourself a favour and drop in for a beer and a steak 🍻👍
M. H.
Had dinner here last night. Everyone on my table loved it. Amazing steaks. Price was very reasonable. Onion rings best I’ve ever tried.
R. P.
Ordered the meatballs and spaghetti, not that good. The balls were rubbery and dense. Good place for a parma and beer. Make sure you reserve a table of you want to lunch in a group.
S. M.
Good place to chill at weekend with friends or colleagues. This place has a long history
E. A.
Location is beautiful, I loved the outdoor seating it was a great place to just slow down away from the busy city centre. Atmosphere, wait staff, beer, and food were all excellent. I'll definitely be coming back here.
R. M.
Hidden treasure, great place, does not feel like your in the middle of the city. Loved it
S. M.
Nice pub in a central location. Was there on trivia night but that didnt interfere with the fun. Good selection of beers and good vybe..helps also that it's the oldest pub in melbs.
A. S.
Super cool building from what I m estimating to be the 18th century. It is tucked away with an awesome feel and if nothing else is a cool building worth a visit that just happens to have a good selection of beer.
k. b.
Great food exceptionally friendly staff.
D. B.
Beautiful old heritage pub. Awesome menu range. Cottage pie was delicious & the Apple pie Sunday was sensational. Warm & friendly staff & service.
A. M.
Super awesome staff , drinks were great. If you're looking for a place to sit relax and grab a beer this place is fantastic. I would have given 5 stars , but the internet barely works .
Y. V.
Melbourne's oldest pub is charming and friendly. The vibe inspires friendliness among its patrons. And lovely beer too!
D. M.
It's got a lot going for it, it's the oldest pub in the city. The menu is what you expect in a pub and decent quality too. Service is usually quick except on the crowded days
D. B.
Food and service is exquisite! It doesn't look like much from outside but once you get upstairs in the dining area the place has so much character. Highly recommended
A. P.
My colleague used to work there and recommended this place for beer and steaks which were awesome! Plus that's the oldest pub in Melbourne so totally worth the visit
C. J. P.
Good old Melbourne pub in the heart of the city that continues to produce the goods as far as drinks and food are concerned.
M. C.
Super quick food and a good location. But tell the girl at the front to learn some customer service skills. If i spoke like that to a customer id expect to be in the centrelink que.
R. B.
Historic and quaint city pub which still pumps after work. I’d give it 3.5 if I could. Pros: friendly service. Cons: cramped, dark and hot... comes with the historic-ness and quaint-ness. Another con: full of suits... comes with the city-ness.
w.
A good hangout place. Small with limited seats inside the tavern. Outside seating is good but you have to bear with the cigarette and smokers.
K. B.
Amazing little place down a side ally.Read the history, its the oldest building in the CBD . Nice vozy and romantic setting. Food "Steakhouse " was very well cooked and presented
J. P.
Extensive range of beers on tap. Casual seating outside. A regular pitstop for me and a small group of friends.
Return inevitable.
A. K.
Food was excellent, but one member of our party waited for food so long, that everyone else was done by the time it arrived, after I followed up. I guess it happens when it's so busy though.
R. H.
Reasonable variety of beer including some craft beer. Food = Standard pub fair, the vegetarian cannelloni I had was quite good.
D. F.
Love this place...best steaks in town. Awesome staff
n. a.
Ordered scotch fillet and the steak came out burnt. Tasted bitter and tough, definitely not worth the price I paid for. Despite that, great service and atmosphere
M. P.
Excellent food and plenty of good beers, wines and spirits. Prices are on par with Perth. The only problem is that its too popular.
T. P.
Fantastic place for lunch the BBQ Parma is amazing.
C. B.
Always looks busy but there's loads of space. Great atmosphere and a "small pub" vibe. Nice and casual but usually packed with men in suits given the location.
S. J.
Coopers Pale Ale on tap. Can't go wrong. Old stately feel. Sci-fi Fantasy group meet here once a month. Back Dining room is the spot. Chicken Parma is always big and always reasonable.
T. J.
Nice, relaxed olden vibeq
K.
One of the oldest tavern of Melbourne. I recommend the Kosciuszko beer which is very refreshing. The interior is a bit dark. Heated smoking area outside.
G.
The oldest pub in Melbourne, great atmosphere, food and beer on tap. One of my Top 3 pubs in Melbourne! The other 2 are The Hofbrahaus in Market lane and the James Squire pub brewery.
M. C.
Nice place but you can improve the quality of your meat. Greetings to the Romanian waiter who takes time to chat with me.
J. “. W.
This is the go to place for business types and often very busy on a Thursday and Friday afternoon.
Pub grub is on point - comes out pretty quickly no matter the size of the group.
D. M.
Great pub, good beers and friendly service. Always a pleasure to enjoy and ice cold beer here
L. A.
The Mitre tavern is actually located in a pretty convenient location, with a pretty outdoor area. However if you're scum of the Earth like me, I recommend the dingy and dark back of the place where you can get boozy with the indescribable benefiit of no phone reception - no getting summoned back to the office for you! Feel the burden-free existence that is having no telephone device, then check your phone afterwards and remember that no one calls you, ever.
S. G.
Such an amazing lunch the pastry crust on the guiness pie was so flaky make sure to order when you visit!! Next time I'm trying the chicken schintzel!
J. T.
Good vibes, friendly and efficient service. There was a table near us that said no smoking but people were still smoking. Probably the only downside. Serves food too.
O. C.
Food was great but took a while for food to come out and our meals did not come out together. Dining outside on a nice day was great.
G.
Furphy on tap and other great beers. Old style pub with good meals upstairs and down stairs. Good size parmas and burgers, very busy pub on a Friday arvo.
A. N.
The oldest pub in Melbourne and well worth a stop. Head upstairs to the little know steakhouse, which serves up delicious steaks at reasonably prices.
P. G.
Great beer selection in traditional pub in centre of Melbourne. Food options looked good too
A. A.
Great food and atmosphere! Love the selection of beers and great for after work drinks. It gets busy as though.
O. M.
Nice old school pub. Great for a drink after work. A good mix of professionals and blue collar, with a great selection of drinks.
C. L.
Nice pub with a very warm old english feel inside. Only improvement would be if they could move the outdoor smoking area away from the entrance.
S. A.
Great pub
P. T.
Great old pub, great food and beer..
D. B.
Great historic Tavern in the middle of Melbourne. Friendly staff with chill atmosphere. Steakhouse upstairs to also good but pricy.
A. B.
Melbournne's oldest continously run licensed establishment down one of the many interesting laneways. A fav watering hole of the legal, banking & business sectors with a great range of beers wines & food.
D. L.
Cold Beer, great pub food, friendly staff, recommend to book a table if eating lunch on a Friday. Will happily visit again.

A. M.
Not bad at all.

P. L.
Centrally located pub. Large terrace. Good selection of beer. Nice steaks upstairs
b.
Great location and who doesn't like a steak
J. F.
Place was buzzing for Friday lunch. Nice ambience. The bangers and mash was tasty with a nice chilli hit but too salty overall.
R. S.
A historical pub a little off the main Street. Well worth it. Good food and beer with plenty of sport on the many TV's.
T. E.
Good beer selection in a really good, old-school pub in the CBD. Nice outdoor section away from the main street
D. R.
Good service, very friendly staff and nice ambience, . But I found the food average at best. The place to go when the atmosphere is more important to you than the fare.
S. F.
Great food & service 😍🤩
N. F.
Big fan of this place. Lovely for a beer after work, and a Parma with the work blokes. Lovely staff.
M. H.
Food reasonable, beers tasty, trivia looked like a blast. Tad pricey but likely due to the clientele - mostly an after work suit vibe
O. L.
Amazing place,u will love it😃😃

R. W.

An institution. No review can really apply. If you have business here, you have to be here. If not... well, they do have great beer, snacks and food.
B. M.
Too crowded..food just ok..wine selection good.
D. B.
Great atmosphere, awesome old school pub. Fantastic beer on tap.
A. K.
Nestled in amongst the high-rises, the longest-serving pub in Melbourne is an institution for lazy corporate afternoons. But for visitors, it offers a fine example of what you can expect from inner-city pubs.
S. M.
The steak and the place are great! I had my birthday there few times! love this place
D. V.
Nice atmosphere and good selection of beers. Pub food was great.
M. E. M.

Great place to go drink very relaxing old school feel
W. M.
Good beer selection, neat place but the beer garden is just street seating. Expensive, but it is Melbourne cbd
G. S. (.
Great traditional pub, apparently the oldest pub in Melbourne. Beer, people, no pretentiousness.
It can get a bit crowded after work on Thursdays and Fridays
S. O.

J. R.
Cool for a drink or a meal, has some good standard tavern meals and the prices are reasonable
S. C.
Too many city types. Apparently the standing area outside is for smokers only. If you don't want to smoke, you'll have to take a seat. Odd.
