Comments of Hotel Sweeney's
C.
Unsuspecting old style pub down stairs, but fantastic little rooftop all the way up the top of the stairs.
Note there is no lift so be willing to take a few flights of stairs to get up there.
When we were there they had some great tunes playing, misters going to cool you off and umbrellas for shade.
They also had a sausage sizzle which was awesome too!
Also note that upstairs they only have craft beers, so if you're after a classic then def grab one on your way up, it's quite a few stairs back down otherwise...
M. D.
A great spot in the heart of the CBD. 4 levels ranging from a friendly city pub and VIP room on the ground floor, through some of Sydney’s best Thai on level 2, cocktails and amazing packaged beer on level 3 (grass roots comedy some nights) to the Crowd favourite: The level 4 rooftop bar now with 12 of Sydney’s best rotating craft beer taps.
Really good friendly staff make you feel very welcome. More than 35 individual beer lines after the 2020 major renovation. Good music, great vibe.
D. M.
Unreal atmosphere and aesthetic on the Rooftop, quite a few stairs if you struggle several levels but is worth it. One of the best schnitty's in the city only wish there was more gravy with it. Really massiverange of beer on tap suiting anyones needs. Great views and vibe, will be coming back
S. M.
Always friendly staff, good Thai food and selection of wine and beer. From the rooftop bar to the ground floor bar, there's something for everyone. Personally, I love it that I can get a pint of British "best" as I walk in the door!
H. F.
If you climb up high enough it gets quiet because people are too tired to venture that far. Except for the rooftop. Back in the day the upper class would pay extra to ride in the bowels of a ship rather than near the deck and the open air. Swings and roundabouts I guess.
S. C.
A great pub. Split over many levels, you have a small old aussie pub downstairs, food on level 2 and then 2 more levels of bars with a specialist craft beer bar on with a open roof on the top floor. The range of events for craft beer are excellent with a wide range of both domestic and international beers. Great environment and decent food. Only downside is that the stairs are many and a bit narrow. Reasonably priced too, especially the craft beer paddles where you get 4 tasters and then a middy when you return the paddle.
A. E.
Nice little rooftop to visit during a warm summers evening if you're around townhall station in the city. Bar staff have always been super friendly at this place.
J. C.
Flying under the radar, great bar, great team, nice cheap beers and good vibes. Definitely a fav spot to drop into for a quick 1 or 10
S. W.
Pretty cool rooftop with it's own bar and seating. Great choices of beer on the pumps, with plenty of tasty strong beers on offer. Nice staff, friendly. Fast service. Food available on the lower floor but it can be taken up to the rooftop. Great choice of music too, no particular style, just a good mix.
K. D.
Great rooftop bar with a nice view. Selection of beers is amazing. During lockdown they are doing growler refills and freshly canned cans really cheap. I can highly recommend supporting this business
K. M.
Love the rotating craft beer on tap at the rooftop bar. Not many like this in Sydney's CBD. I've come here every few weeks since I discovered it for a pub lunch. Decent Thai food to accompany the beers too.
J. E.
Classic old school pub downstairs. Great little rooftop bar area where you can eat.
M. L.
Love the rooftop bar with a variety of brews on offer and ye olde building with precarious staircase. The handsome bartenders are a bonus
L. M.
Good pub in the heart of the city. Offers several levels of seating, but the rooftop bar is where it's at. Need to ensure you get there early, otherwise there's no chance of getting a seat on the rooftop.
Other levels are great too, all have a good atmosphere and good beers on tap.
B. K.
Fantastic venue with excellent craft beer on the rooftop bar. Biggest criticism is smoking is allowed at the rooftop bar. It's about time Aussie venues prohibited smoking. We don't want their cancer. However, if you can tolerate it, it's still a great place for a craft beer. 🍻
V. H.
I love the uniqueness of this place. It has multiple floors with nice little seating areas (and a fireplace in winter) and the rooftop gives a beautiful view of the city with a really cool bar. Great craft beers on tap, well priced cocktails ($14 cocktails and $25 cocktail pitchers), and a fantastic food selection. The food is Thai pub fusion, with a mix of traditional pub meals, traditional Thai meals, and then awesome Thai style burgers (massaman beef, chicken satay). The burgers are a great price of $16 for burger and chips every day.
S. J.
Great location and food and beverages. But cash only is weird for a CBD venue. The retro decor is lovely until you realise there is no lift even if you are carrying food.
l. M.
Great bar staff. Cheap drinks. Rooftop atmosphere is always a good time
C. T.
Always a good time, great rooftop spot in the city
X. P.
Great pub with rooftop bar that hasn't been gentrified yet! Great atmosphere with a good selection of beers. Great service and vibe.
N. B.
Proper old school Sydney pub with a couple of traditional hand pump taps with real beer in said taps. Not to mention having Kilkenny as well, which is my favourite! Great vibe and relaxed atmosphere. Can't wait to go again.
K. S.
Good selection of craft on the roof (often Feral brewery)
Other levels have comfier seating!
English beer engine on the ground level
M. P.
Great bar for a variety of patrons. They have sports TV's on ground floor, pub meals on 1st, comfy lounge on 2nd, and a banging rooftop bar with awesome craft beers and a dj. Whenever I have an opportunity I drop in here for some beers. This is a pub that has confidently settled into its groove. It's not pretending to be something it's not. And what it is, is a great inner city pub.
B. Y.
Awesome rooftop bar! $5 happy hour 5 to 7pm and some all day drink specials. Chill atmosphere, easy to talk to people.
D. K.
Have gone here after work with the crew almost every Friday. It's a joint with a buzzing atmosphere on the rooftop. It's packed and hard to find a seat especially when everyone clocks out. In all honesty I give it its star rating because of the sentiment it has and good times that were made. Cheers
M. N.
This place is for everyone.
A nice traditional pub on the ground.
Dining/drinking on 1st and 2nd with a bar with more crafty beers and lounge area.
The roof is the beer garden with more crafty beers on tap and a nice ambience (although prepare for smoking)
Love the retro magazine stuff on the walls on the roof.
All I all a great place to catch up.
F. B.
What can I say, it's a dive bar with heart 💓 the people are friendly, there's a great selection of bet on tap and wine on the menu and you can always find a spot across the 4 floors. It's not the place for you if you're looking for the next 'it' bar, but we love it for that reason
E. D.
Great setting, particularly the rooftop!
However the woman behind the bar upstairs was really rude - I asked about what was in the pitcher after ordering (as it didn’t taste alcoholic) and she then proceeded to come up to us at the table and say ‘well, I don’t know what you expect from a $25 pitcher’ which was unnecessary as I thought we’d cleared things up previously. Her attitude was poor and we felt awkward, it was very off putting.
S. H.
Food is good and it's one of the very few craft beer pubs in the dire CBD scene but it's only a very small space on the rooftop, so very hard to score a seat and then, disappointingly, when you do, you realise that smoking is allowed up there, making it a pretty unpleasant experience for the non-smoker. Even outdoors, the smell is very off-putting. A real shame.
J. T.
Great chicken wings and coupled with comedy stand up and a beer on hand is a heavenly made match!
P. S. S. (.
We were pub crawling around till we founded this gem. I can't really hear the music well but they got a small fancy tiki bar on the 2nd floor with wooden mugs!! Also the view of the Townhall & Centrepoint on the rooftop upstairs is awesome. The floors quite sticky for my preference but if the guys & girls loved it, I loved it.
T. P.
We are very pleased with the work they did for us- thank you so much!
J. D.
Had amazing beer here and there were several unusual options on tap I hadn’t tried before. And the roof top is just great, a bit of a hidden gem in the city.
K. R.
Very good thanks. Enjoyed the keep fit walk up to the top floor
G. M.
Clean in Hart of city rooms not that big but you only sleep there staff ok
E. O.
Might be a lot for stairs to get to the craft beer but it's much worth it. Good burgers too a real nice venue!
A. T. B.
They serve decent priced drinks. Rooftop is smoke friendly and has heating for winter days. This rooftop is always crowded and has a great atmosphere. The stairs could be a bit tricky to climb, and the variety of drinks is not great. Location is very convenient. Overall it's an awesome place to spend a good night out with friends.
D. V.
Great lineup of beers at the rooftop bar. You can order Thai food downstairs and take them up to the rooftop level.
C. P.
Good. Some feedback:
- should be able to order food from table
J. G.
Great pub with interesting (if a smidge pricy) taplist. Only reason this place doesn't get a five is that sometimes the lower floors have had a bit of a weird smell. Like vinegar has been used to clean. Beer used to taste like they used weird cleaning product, however this most definitely has improved!
M. B.
The rooftop has excellent beer, but be sure to get a wine on your way up the stairs - they're not always fully stocked. Awesome staff, chilled atmosphere. Always a pleasure.
M. B.
Excellent customer service! Whenever I needed something they were there for me. Thank you guys.
L. Z.
Nice craft beer at convenient location, plus superb view on the rooftop bar!
P. B.
Good pub, great rooftop.
J. D.
Recommend the roof top bar if you are after a craft beer. New brewery on every week. Staff are great and know the beers.
A. S.
Rooftop bar is great if you can get a seat. Friday tap takeovers are awesome.
G. S.
Crowded but had a diligent covid Marshall. Good friendly service and reasonable prices. Although tight on space, raining, so the roof top bar not an option. Would be good at other times.
v.
very well poured Guinness and Kilkenny. slightly expensive but hey it's the CBD
D. L.
Bars.on both the ground floor and roof had great atmosphere. Thai restaurant, with some pub grub, on the third floor was reasonably priced.
K. A.
This is a very clean and friendly place to shop. I always enjoy coming here.
D. J.
The Chimney Bistro is great value and FAST. Lots of rooms to chill out. Bars galore. Great place to come too for a casual lunch in the city.
I. S. M.
Roof top ... keg take over !
Old grunge pub, Old which I like.. dark ground floor bare drink standing, few stools, next level up...black pool table to have to your self in the afternoon, old ripped couches here and there, bit smelly... Even more so in the toilets.
Rooftop level up again.... I wouldn't like to, need too get out in a hurry! With Only one small old wooden staircase to the roof! Limited to 70 or so people.
Still the place has sprinkler system installed so as long as it's maintained, which it would be! no problem.
Bit feral butt I kind of like that, in pubs sometimes with the new pubs feels like a MacDonalds and NO soul.
Great place to catch up with mates hang out over a few craft beers.
Sorry I can't say about the food ! as we didn't eat there, people seemed to be getting into theirs.
V. O.
Fun, slightly grubby (but in a good way). Very good before events at Town Hall. We went before the Roxanne Gay event (she was awesome). The Thai food was good and very well-priced. The gin & tonics were cheap but there was no tonic....
Came back afters and had a very good sour beer from the rooftop garden, where the good beers are. We had to take them back downstairs so it was quiet enough to talk.
L. W.
Great rooftop bar. Would suggest not going in peak times such as Friday night as rooftop gets extremely crowded, however security do a great job of controlling this. This bar has a great atmosphere about it with different levels all offering a different aesthetic. Drinks are relatively cheap, food is a no go, however most don't come to this hotel to eat.
J. M.
Fun place. Make your way straight to the rooftop for some good drinks and atmosphere, great music usually too. One level down is a pool table and lounge area (amateur comedy on Tuesdays), and another level down is the kitchen/dining (delicious Massaman burger!). Ground floor is the usual pub style, sticky floored dark and dingy dive. Fun place haha
A.
Good range on tap, friendly staff.
T. S.
Great pub in the city. Four different levels finishing with the rooftop bar. Excellent selection of craft beers and tasting paddles are available. The rooftop provides some small bar snacks, cooked up on a WebberQ.
Friendly staff and a comfy location.
A. S.
Pretty cool pub! You wont find many with a rooftop bar which is quite unique! Awesome for a few beers after work whilst enjoying the sun outside on the rooftop bar! Very limited seating is the only downfall due to the small space, get in early and you have secured yourself a great spot! Food is also very reasonable and good quality for a pub. Will defiantly be back!
G. S.
Pretty divey on the ground floor but the rooftop is great, it opens at 12pm. Beer selection is pretty standard on all floors but the rooftop is where the craft beers are. The craft beers are almost too divisive though: porter, double IPA, boysenberry neipa etc... The summer ale was the most drinkable if you want something less fancy. Nice relaxed vibe if you want to get some work done during the day.
A. E.
I'd give 5 stars if the rooftop had more beer options. Going up and down each time you need a top up gets a bit exhausting. Rooftop doesn't have any smooth beer like a good old lager, it's all high alcohol bitter tasting beers on tap, which I don't mind for a change but hard to drink all night. That said, having a rooftop is bit of a luxury in this area :)
E. K.
This place was alright, but upon arriving at 7pm on a week night they were confiscating water bottles for fear of patrons smuggling in alcohol. I experienced a very disappointing water bottle loss that day. But otherwise has a pretty sweet grungy rooftop bar. It somehow feels just as seedy as all the other levels.
A. A.
A multi level pub next to Town Hall station. It's an interesting pub that is a basic pub on the ground floor. There's others levels that are more bar like and a bistro level. The highlight is their roof top bar. Has a great atmosphere and a great place to have a drink and smoke with friends.
A. T.
A bit on the pricy side for my taste. Decent location and I love the rooftop bar. The only problem I had was because it’s somewhat enclosed, but open roof, smoke doesn’t dissipate that well, it becomes a bit stinky after a while with smokers around. We both came out with our clothes smelling pretty badly.
J. A.
The rooftop is a hidden gem of Sydney and I'd love to taste it higher but the cigarette smokers killed the vibe for me and my friends 🤭
J. S.
Great beer garden with a good selection of independent beers
K. T.
Always a great selection of craft beers at the rooftop bar (which is a perfect spot on a sunny day). The food from the bistro is consistently good whether you chose from the more Thai style dishes or the traditional pub fare.
Friendly staff add to the experience and brighten up the somewhat bohemian interior. 😁
J. K.
Excellent rooftop area for some drinks in the sun. Food is average and overpriced for thai food that is nothing special. Wouldn't eat there, would just drink. There are some interesting beers on tap and I think they cycle and rotate them. I had a SookiLaLa and was pleasantly surprised.
D. B.
Good vibes for an inner city pub. Nice rooftop but it gets busy quickly on a Fri and Sat night. The bar on the middle floor is quite useless although the couches are comfy and they have pool tables too.
L. S.
Great rooftop, different types of beer to choose and super friendly staff.
L. C.
An very old pub with a nice rooftop bar but be warned, you can't eat here as it's a designated smoking area. Gone are the days of responsible snacking whilst having a drink.
I was here on a very hot day and they had nice mist fans to cool the punters down. I haven't eaten here so I can't comment on the food. On occasion they have "tap take overs" from micro breweries which is great as well.
Everything below the rooftop bar could do with a makeover or a clean.
M. T.
It's a bar with a distinctly Irish/Scottish name, yet the VIP room entrance is plastered with Chinese symbols, like seriously a missed opportunity, Ireland has the four leaf clover and the leprechaun. This bar basically ignored it's heritage to be like EVERY single VIP room in inner Sydney. Boring. Show some individuality! - Beer considerably more expensive than Oxford Street bars
M. M.
Drinks are reasonably priced and the bar staff do well considering how many people are here on a Friday night. If you want to rooftop either turn up early or book ahead cause it fills up fast.
A. H.
Perfect for a team pub lunch and an afternoon on the rooftop
K. O.
Different bars on each floor. Good food at a cheap price. Happy hour offers and a good atmosphere.
A. K.
Was recommended by a total stranger to go check out this place and go up to the rooftop bar. I wasn't disappointed at all! Couple of nice beers on tap (no "brand" beer, which I liked). There are multiple levels to this place, so don't be thrown off by the local pub look on the 1st floor. Go all the way upstairs!
H. C.
Their customer service has been nothing short of phenomenal: prompt responses.
J. K.
Oh what a night. Love going here. Roof top is priceless in Sydney. Not one thing is flash here but everything is sprinkled in fun with a touch of city magic. Pete the bar manager brings this somewhat antiquated venue to life. Always pumping on a Friday.
L. S.
The rooftop is a chill place to go for craft beer. The selection seems to change daily, so I kept finding great new beers. Went there three days in a row and had a blast each time.
S. S.
A sentimental favourite in the heart of Sydney that straddles the border between dingy and homely. It's the most unkempt a place can be without being gross. The rooftop is lovely and has a bar that rotates craft beers regularly. Just make sure to arrive early because it can get pretty crowded up there!
p.
Quality venue for craft beer at rooftop bar
N. M.
Really cool, Rooftop crazy crowded in a Friday afternoon but the inside areas are neat too. Each floor has a slightly different look you can tell it was remodelled 5 grand at a time but it kind of adds to the charm. Decent beer selection
N. N.
Best kept secret in Sydney! The rooftop bar is my favourite, it’s small but drinks are inexpensive, music and service are always great
A. K.
Sweeneys isn't one of these swanky try-hard establishments. Modest decor with a local pub charm caters for a wide variety of clientele. Different levels allow for a bespoke experience. Head to the Rooftop for good vibes. Do it.
J. C.
My go-to bar for pre-drinks, drowning out sorrows, catch-ups and romantic dates. This bar preserves a high level of ambience on all levels with extremely friendly staff. The rooftop bar can get cramped on Friday/Saturday nights but the lower levels are spacious and have a nice feel. The couches on the 2nd floor are comfy and its usually quiet in that space. Certainly one of the best bars in the Sydney area that I've been to, and I would highly recommend this place for anyone over the age of 18!
S. D.
Small little dive bar in Sydney CBD. Staff are friendly and helpful. At this current time they have a small brewery takeover of their beer taps. Offering all sorts of wonderful and crazy tasting and styled beers, probably around 15. Staff were happy to let you taste before purchasing which was good, as some were a little too exotic for me. Next time I'm in Sydney I would definetly return. Thanks guys
j. k.
Had my birthday at Sweeney's Friday night with a few friends. After a slightly disappointing start, the floor manager made every attempt to make my night special and provide as much service as possible. Shout out to Sandy - Give this man a raise!
K. A.
Nice place, one of its kind. The rooftop part is really good for day/night, weather permitting. The middle levels are a really great idea, but needs slot of improvement; can do with some renovations, quite background music, TV....etc, the place can be transformed into a chillax heaven.
C. P.
It is what it is. If you want the cheapest drinks in Sydney then this is the place for you. It has many levels of un renovated pub. Lots of backpackers. It has a small but cool roof top bar. I liked it but it's not for everyone.
G. C.
Great beers with a fantastic rooftop location. A bit grungy and grotty decor - in fairness could do with a comprehensive overhaul, but the beer and unique location makes up for it. Good Thai food in plentiful portions.
M. H.
Great boutique beers on the rooftop, friendly staff and abhorrent toilets.
L. G.
Strange pub/bar/restaurant across multiple floors. Roof terrace is nice.
M. Y.
Not a bad place. Multi level. Craft beers on the roof, sports bar on ground. Thai place level 1, pool table level 2. Stairs suck but usually worth it for the rooftop beers
W. I.
Security is knowledgeable and bartenders are conversational. The tap upstairs is full of new beers that appear to rotate frequently. It's run down like a frat house but is run like a true pub. One of my absolute favorites in Sydney.
S. M.
Absolute dump but I love it. Rooftop on a Sunday afternoon is chilled. You can play whatever music you want on their speakers using the CrowdDJ app, and when it's boiling hot in the summer they have tubing overhead that spray you with cool mist. Brilliant.
A. D.
Cool Rooftop Bar with reasonably priced cocktails. Popular after work watering hole so tricky to get seating on top level, but one level down usually has a place or three. Many stairs to the top so take care...
A. G.
Great place in the middle of the city offering rooftop sitting, dining and bar option. Cutouts of the old advertisements and news add nostalgic charm to the place which is visibly old. Good place to hang with colleagues and friends. Good food and nice staff make the overall experience quite pleasant and enjoyable.
B. H.
Had a great arvo on the roof top bar. Currently they have 6+ Fuller's beers on tap. Great blast back to Chiswick times. :). Loved the pint of Honey Dew in the sun.
J. J.
From the outside, and initial first steps into Sweeney's it looks and feels like a dive bar. The venue has definitely not been lived over the years and is in need of a refurbishment. However, this does add to the charm of the venue. The jewel in Sweeney's crown though is their rooftop bar serving an ever changing and great selection of craft beers.
P. R.
Best Thai restaurant in Sydney and $0.50 chicken wings on Tuesday nights. They regularly change the beers in the roof bar but usually have an offering to suit everyone's taste.
it's not pretentious and get's a good mix of people
E. K.
This place is a popular Friday lunch spot for a number of my colleagues. When I first asked them about the place, they said that when you enter the place, it looks quite dodgy, so just look in the direction of the stairs and make your way all the way to the top. I decided to check it out on a Friday after work and took their advise and headed up to the top of the stairs and there I saw a cool roof top bar. Quite a nice hidden gem in the town hall area. Just one floor below there are comfy couches where you can enjoy your cider or cold one. The music isn't too loud either so you can have a conversation without having to yell into each other's ear. The food is quite interesting too for a pub as they serve Thai. That's in addition to the usual pub food. Another interesting thing to mention is that they also have a meat raffle on that evening when I was there.
T. S.
Cheap drinks. Rooftop area can become a bit crowded with smokers but lots of room on lower levels. Good for a casual beer with a group of friends or some workmates.
P. M.
The ground floor bar is a proper workman's bar with lots of character and a very good selection of beer and wine, including a couple of hand pumps and a few craft beers. The Thai restaurant on the upper floors is reasonably priced and excellent fare. If craft beer is your thing, Sweeney's Rooftop Bar is an oasis in the craft beer desert that is this end of town with an ever changing selection of 8 or so beers. Sweeney's also regularly hosts brewery takeovers.
J. s.
One of my favorite bars in Sydney for craft beers. Great selection that rotates and nice rooftop location. Like any other craft beer bar in Sydney, expect to pay a lot for a pint.
J. M.
Adorable bar.
The rooftop bar is both intimate and spacious.
But let's talk stairs.... Soooo many stairs!
If you struggle mountain climbing... maybe stay on the ground floor or find another pub.
F.
Usually quite busy. Lots of interesting characters rock up here, but I absolutely hate sitting in those beer stained couches that have lost their spring. The third floor has a decent pool table and the fourth floor is mainly used as a smokers’ roof top. It’s difficult later at night when tipsy kids are heading up and down the stairs - usually there’s a security guard there as better judgement incase anyone does an A over T. I guess this place has a lot of historic value, but I wouldn’t go here if it wasn’t for my friends dragging me along. Honestly, it could be slightly less crusty.
V. R.
Your classic divey Sydney bar, but refitted to sprawl up several distinct levels. If you make it up all the stairs a neat roof top bar awaits, but it is let down by limited serving areas for the bar staff. Would be a great place for a beer off peak.
D. P.
Always good times , the craft beer great.... And the stuff cleaning the vomit doing the best job.. great music as well!!
A. G.
The upstairs bar, once you get to it, is quite nice. Why smoking is allowed up there is beyond me. A VERY huffy barmaid kept returning the filthy ashtray, that we didn't want or require, to our table.
A. H.
Neat location for a drink and multiple floors depending on what you feel like. There is a beer garden on the top of the the floor and plenty of seating to choose from. They also have Guinness on tap as well.
J. G.
There are multiple floors and the rooftop bar is the best.
Would suggest not going on a Friday night though as rooftop gets extremely crowded.
Drinks are relatively cheap but food is a no go.
D. G.
Apart from a few fellows swearing too much and loudly in the downstairs bar it was nice as usual. We went upstairs instead.
R. K.
It's a standard Sydney CBD pub, with the usual selection of house and craft beers. The excellent rooftop bar and great staff make it a great place to grab a beer with mates or colleagues.
G. D.
Each level has a differwnt vibe. Bottom floor is a classic sports bar. Level 2 is a restraunt. Level 3 has a whiskey bar and on the roof they have craft beers. Overall an excellent location.
D. W.
Pretty decent pub with a wide mix of craft beers and beverages. The rooftop is nice, but like all venues it tends to be quite crowded around the weekends.
B. D.
Decent craft beer choice on the rooftop bar. Unfortunately it's up 4 sets of narrow winding stairs that could be very difficult to traverse after a few. Outdoor bar area has no shade.
D. T.
Rooftop Bar was sweltering, but the beer selection and tap takeovers are excellent. Thai food also tasty and cheap.
H. S.
This bar has a hidden away rooftop which features a well stocked bar with the best local brews on tap, saisons, ipas, double stouts, the tap list is different most weeks so it has become a regular pick for friday drinks.
W. S.
This is a rooftop review as didn't really get into the Ol'Skool pub sitch down stairs
Fair hike up the narrow staircase to the roof top (no lift/disabled access)
We went on a fry-an-egg-on-the-ground hot Fridae arvo.
There was shade provided by cafe style umbrellas. No spray misters which might have been nice.
Its an eclectic grungy rooftop with the crowd to match. Officeworkers, construction workers, randoms.
The small brewery beers that were on tap (I hadn't heard of) although by all reports were rubbish.
I stuck to ye olde faithfuls Hahn SuperDry and Boags Light in the bottle.
The bar wasn't very well managed but the gals were working hard/doing their best.
2.8*
Good for a beer or two. Not horrible bad but not good either. Wouldn't make a scene about returning but lots of other places would go first.
G. B.
Great value tasty Thai food (they do regular pub grub too but my pick would be the Thai menu) with a outdoor roof bar. Don't let the many stairs or decor put you off - it's great!
D. B.
Great location and awesome rooftop bar. Drink selection is gets better as you go down the stairs which is abit of a stitch up.
M. S.
Rooftop bar is worth a visit. Retro styled, cosy, quality beer options.
Be ready to walk 4 levels worth of stairs, they dont have a lift.
S.
Hotel Sweeneys is conveniently located a short walk from town hall station. It is a multistorey building, with a bar on the rooftop. Overall quite a chill vibe, and cool place to hang out. Bartender on the rooftop was incredibly nice last Thursday night, served me a tequila shot and vodka lemonade :)
A. G.
Awesome Thai food, which is also reasonably priced.
Good selection of beers. The drink variety is constantly changing so you won't get bored too quickly.
J. J.
Don't get me wrong, this rooftop is super beut on a sunny day, and the beers on tap are delish... BUT would really appreciate a classic Aussie badge beer on tap for those wanting something a bit simpler
F. K.
The rooftop bar is pretty legit. The view isn't super fantastic, but it's better to be outside than inside on a cool night. Mostly you get to see surrounding buildings, and the dark shadows of unlit skyscrapers... the ones that don't count as skyscrapers anymore because they aren't 80 stories tall. Question: how does one get graffitti all the way up there? Oh, also, apparently there's good thai food on the first floor, but I haven't had it.
D. M.
Friday night meat raffles is the Best!! True workman pub! Don't expect fancy environment, but get ready for great service and cold drinks of any variety!♡
S. G.
Lots of stairs to a busy smoking rooftop but worth it if you get a seat. It's the kind of place that you have to sit on the sanitary bin to sit on the toliet though.
T. W.
After trying what seemed like every bar in Sydney, I finally stumbled along Sweeny's and wished I had come earlier. I came on a quiet night where my friends and I could have a drink on each of the rooftop, the old couches upstairs and in front of the TVs on the bottom floor. If you like house parties - give this place a go!
A. K.
Classic sydney city pub...Very good bar and cleaning services. The staff are very friemdly and interactive. Overall great experience
D. D.
Oct 2015
This is an old pub in the city with some charm. They have a great Thai restaurant that supplies dishes with fresh ingredients and REAL prawn crackers. They oddly don't have EFTPOS so paying for stuff was an unnecessary headache. I also wanted a coke but the tap had gone flat.
E. R.
Nothing really stands out about the place.
90s music, good beer, cheap food.
I even think that the venue is in need of a refurbishment.
Also, it's so packed. You will be struggling to find a table
very often.
B. P.
Open late with mixed crowd. The rooftop is great. They have Guinness, which is always a plus. Friendly staff. There are I think 4 levels, so ther's plenty of room.
J. S.
Love the roof top bar, great beers, worth noting can get very busy during peak times, and it is a smoking area.
8.
Good beer and good food, but very limited seating
L. P.
Cool rooftop area although very small. Good selection of wine and beer. Bar staff were rude though and very unhelpful.
H. J.
Great Sydney city pub. Everything from a pool table to upstairs open area to sport downstairs. Also perfect date night spot on the weekdays!
S. O.
Great pub. Head up to the rooftop and grab yourself a thai lunch and a pint. Sometimes the staff seem to have taken a touch to much horse tranquilliser, but it's just part of the experience.
H. p.
The TAB in the main bar on the ground floor is great for after work punting and as you move up the levels it becomes a more intimate setting with a cool rooftop bar at the top. The beer tap takeovers are also a highlight of this venue
j.
Great atmosphere for a Sydney City pub, the rooftop bar is awesome. Hidden gem in the city, the lower levels of the pub are a bit outdated but the rooftop bar more than makes up for it
M. C.
Rooftop is pretty cool.
Food is average and expensive (avoid the prawns soup dish, it consisted of 3 prawns, 3 cherry tomatoes and half onion.. the soup itself was tasty but I walked out hungry)
J. W.
Great place, they also have Tetley’s beer on tap. Brings back memories of Sheffield
R. W.
One of the best places I don't remember being Sunday morning, seriously good atmosphere
B. R.
Great rooftop bar.
Friendly staff. Cold beer on a warm day. Could have a smoke...just like the old daze
C. A. M.
The rooftop deck is awesome. Great beers on tap as well. Captain Atom Man definitely recommends.
L. M.
Head straight upstairs to the roof for 8+ craft beer taps on constant rotation. The other floors are left wanting however. I have heard good things about the Thai restaurant on the second level.
H. W.
Pretty good inner city pub, often mixes the beer selection up, nice rooftop bar although quite small so should get there early.
J. C.
Love the rooftop bar. Doesn't have any great views, but it has good vibes. The old rickitiness of the hotel is really cool.
b. p.
Rooftop thrills reminescent of the bangin' 80s. Tap takeover from local breweries weekly. Plenty of cocktail options if you can brave the 3 flights of stairs. Much recomended.
S. C.
Great atmosphere for a "pub", would recommend heading up to the rooftop if it's a nice night. Also has a very decent Thai selection, which is a refreshing change from the pub classics.
W. B.
Love this pub. Old man vibe at the bottom with a solid guinness. Upstairs roof terrace is cracking with awesome guest beers.
I. L.
I always enjoy their great selection of unique beers e.g. 3 Ravens choc mint shake was crazy and delicious! Basically liquid choc mint icecream.
S. P.
Could do with some upgrades to furniture and facility
but it still isn't a bad pub.
The rooftop bar is amazing for drinks
though it is let down by limited serving areas for the bar staff.
D. S.
The rooftop FTW, epic selection of beers on tap always changing. Goes well with the cheap'n'cheerful Thai restaurant on the 1st floor
T. R.
Great food, great staff
D. M.
Love it! Awesome beer, usually crowded though. Most of the times we have to be at the rooftop which is for smokers. Aside from that great beer on "tap take over nights"
A. W.
Fun and danky pub. It's nothing fancy, but if you want beer, it has a roof top bar. Enjoy.
D. R.
Sweeney's has a great rooftop to enjoy a wide range of craft beers which are swapped regularly. Good charm and a cosy place.
P. W.
Always a good Thai feed at Sweeney’s and the rooftop is great for a beer in the summer, with the mist fans and umbrellas to manage the heat. Good tunes too.
b. w.
hotel sweeneys is really quite divey but once you get to the roof top its quite a nice place to be. They do great cheap thai and cheap beers. The roof top bar area is probably the reason to head here. Decent grub and cheap beers. Central in the city
M. A.
Great if you are after a grungy rambling pub for a drink. Small rooftop is a good escape. Haven’t eaten here.
R. B. M.
The perfect relaxed place, complete with questionable stains and never enough seating; feels like a house party. Great place to hang out with good friends, but not ideal for work functions or a first date.
E. D.
Used to be my favourite bar, until the westies started getting word of how great this place is (And they'd be right for thinking so). Now its so packed you will be struggling to find a table on a Wednesday night.
P. O.
With a fantastic roof top bar don't be fooled by Hotel Sweeney's at first glance. Hotel Sweeney's is made up of four levels, with the bottom floor being a TAB/Pokie's room, 2nd level a restaurant, 3rd level seating and 4th level one of the nice roof top bars in the Sydney CBD.
M. R.
Rooftoop, not a bad selection of beers.... but this is a smokers bar. First place I've ever seen a sign saying you can't eat food because people are smoking!
G. R.
Very nice atmosphere. Love the roof top
J.
Not bad, has some cheap cocktails and the rooftop bar has a good atmosphere to it. The same can't be really said for the other two levels however.
K. C.
Basic old pub, smells of stale beer and cigarette smoke from days of old.We had been to an event in George St from 10.30am.Lunch was light so at 5.30pm my group of friends were starving.Good basic meals,my friends had hamburgers which looked and smelt great.I had Thai beef salad which was delicious and spicy. The lemon, lime and bitters was sickly sweet so that wasn't enjoyed or finished. And ice was in short supply for such a hot day.
M. I.
Always great beer list, roof top bar is awesome despite smokers and Thai down one level is fantastic (cash only)
R. M.
Great beers on the rooftop so make your way up there, it does get busy though. The rest of the pub is dated however
H. F.
Didn't know the rooftop existed. All these years lived around here, walked past a thousand times.. top spot, great musicand vibe on a Thursday night,
K. L.
Retro feel with small and packed rooftop bar. Highlight is the great selection of craft beers on tap.
D. S.
Always a good selection of beers in the rooftop bar but be aware it can be very crowded up there on certain evenings.
P. F.
Several bars split over different levels gives this place the feeling of being several places. They often have a good selection of craft beer on tap.
M. W.
Rooftop Bars, craft beer tap takeovers. A great place for a Friday lunch with colleagues on a sunny day.
M. W.
A bit rundown and quite expensive for drinks, the best feature is the rooftop garden which is unfortunately gets very crowded, especially on weekends
D. F.
Not a bad place to watch the cricket. It is just a basic pub. The wings they sell here on Tuesday's are not American style wings.
M. L.
Nice mix of Thai food and pub grub. Beers are good value, especially given the mid city location.
C. L.
Great to get out again thanks tinSweeney's
W. M.
Great rooftop bar. Really busy on Friday I went, but nice to see a countback to when Aussie bars were great!
G. D.
Old school pub with very good Guinness
C. P.
When you first see sweeneys it really doesn't look all that nice, but head up to the rooftop for a nice evening with your friends. Te drinks are relatively cheap and you get this in city vibe while also not feeling like you are in the heart of the city.
C. M.
Had a great time at the rooftop bar, the stairs are something to be aware of, but once you're up top it's great
L. D.
Awesome atmosphere on the rooftop, a few good craft beer taps. Bit short on space, was fine on a Monday.
M. W.
Cheap. Easy. Laid back.
Great rooftop bar. Recommend any night of the week or any hot sunny summery day.
I. 1.
Stopped in for a few drinks and the staff were amazing. Thank you guys we will be back!!
A. M.
Doesn't look like a bar. But when I going in and up to another steps, there are really cozy rooftops 😍
M. K.
Love this pub, old and grungy as it is, it has a great beer tap range, friendly bar maids, and there are not many pubs like this anymore!
A. H.
Great environment, great service and even better drinks!
L. G. L.
Now that they stock Willy the Boatman beer I got super drunk. Also my "old mate" was happy to deliver out the front. What a world.
A. S.
Pretty chilled place. Nice for a after work beer. Bit hot inside but the friendly staff make up for the heat.
O. M.
Great little pub, offering Thai food upstairs, and regional beers on its rooftop. A little quirky, a little unloved, but loved by regulars.
t. s.
The rooftop bar is definitely worth the climb, and they've got pretty good selection of beers
J. T.
Classic Sydney rooftop bar experience. The range of beers isn't massive but it is varied and they're dedicating taps to smaller craft beer producers.
R. C.
Great crusty old pub pretty crusty, nice rooftop area where u can punch darts, cop craft on draft and get drunker than a monkeys uncle. Sick spot ay
D. B.
Great atmosphere. Lovely staff. Really enjoyed playing pool while the staff jokingly bullied us about our terrible pool skills !
M. F. d. C.
Great rooftop. It’s also nice in winter because the heaters, but on Friday afternoon it is to be very crowded.
B. M.
Great venue, very convenient to access via public transport. Service was great: very friendly and meals arrived very quickly. Reasonable quality food, good price, very friendly, genuine service. Would recommend a visit.
d. f.
Awesome rooftop bar!! Not enough varieties of beer up there. Also amazing food.
D. B.
Dive bar in the middle of the city but with a rooftop bar, cheap beer, plenty of seats and a decent Thai restaurant on the second floor.
C. L. B.
Amazing staff. Sick rooftop with great spotifyable jams. Delicious thai. Prodigious craft beer selection.
D. W.
Absolutely a great place to catch up with friends n have a great drink love it! Recommend to family friends n randoms!
S.
Nice pub in the CBD. Busy rooftop bar. Bars on plenty of other levels.
M. P.
Beer. Rooftop. Awesome. Loved the canadian tap takeover.
M. P.
The rooftop bar is a very cosy place with a good selection of craft beers on tap.
C. H.
Great beer selection upstairs. Thai restaurant is a nice twist on the usual pub grub.
R. M. (.
Great Place for an after works drink. Rooftop is small and can get really suffocating in the summer though.
S. D.
Great vibe in a authentic relic of a venue. Rooftop Bar and good food at a reasonable price, I highly recommend it.
R. C.
I love the beer here. The staff are always very friendly, and the urine enctusted toilets are full of charm.
A. S.
Great staff ... great roof top bar
D. C.
One of the best rooftop bars in the city ! Go for great craft beers !
T. T.
Nice old school pub feeling downstairs and great beer garden on the roof. Easy to get to by public transport
S. M.
A very tired looking pub except for the upper level which is one of the best little rooftop bars in all of Sydney
S.
Good friendly place unfortunately no lift to get to the roof top bar. Plenty of craft beer.
D. P.
Nice little beer garden hidden upstairs on the rooftop with craft beer. Be aware it is quite expensive up there.
J. C.
Fun place, too many stairs, but something different. Laid back and the rooftop bar is pretty chill.
j. b.
Great bar with fantastic happy hour and wonderful staff. It has become a go to when visiting the city.
W. F.
Wonderful beets and atmosphere. This is my local. Tap takeovers are fantastic as is the staff
S. K.
Good selection of beer on tap and lots of craft beer too. Unfortunately it smells like it hasn't been cleaned in 50 years...
C. D.
Thai food was great and cheap, surprise find.
I'll return
A. K.
Not good smells on first floor. Nice beer on top floor. Good location. Friendly stuff.
M. L.
Great roof top bar and friendly service. Good range of beers too!
A. B.
Great bar/pub, Terrace bar is recommended if the weather is good. Lots of stairs to get to the top.
T. W.
Rooftop is one of the best places to be close to Town Hall with a few beers.
A. C.
Love the rooftop! Very friendly staff, nice selection of beers
T. D.
It's only a Pub, but it's a bloody good Pub, complete with sticky carpet and rooftop bar.
R. A.
Nice roof top, usually you can get a good craft beer
D. B.
Went only for a few beers with a friend, but the rooftop was amazing, a quiet little oasis of peace in the middle of the city.
T. Z.
Great beer selection at 1990s prices, and the food at the Thai place was incredible.
S. M.
Great staff, good covid rules, great selection of imported beers
B. C.
The pub has awesome history and awesome beers.
S. J.
Good and varied choice of beers. The retro (old) style maybe feel appalling, but reality is it wouldn't mind some good restoration.
M. S.
love the place. scrafy and yet cousy = cheap drinks and good Thai food! Roof top with bar!
O. M.
Nice beers upstairs, the place is a little pricy and the decor has been much better days.
A. L.
Upstairs is cool, downstairs deceives. Although, when I was there, where I sat at the rooftop bar garden smelled like bile. =/
S. B.
Great old pub, fantastic rooftop bar, serving superior craft beers.
I. T. T.
Good pub, good location, nice food and great view from top floor. Place needs a bit of refresh.
J. B.
It isn't the neatest looking pub but there's a lot of character. Also, a rooftop section.
L. J.
Decent guinness and crafty selection on the roof bar, what's not to like? Oh yeah, the toilets. The toilets are just terrible
M. E. V.
Walk upstairs to the rooftop and grab some great, new craft beer. It’s got a rooftop, what more should I say!!
C. T.
The bars a bit old and run down, but an awesome selection of beers and pretty good vibe
J. C.
Thai food is nice and atmosphere is cool, but unfortunately they're quite slow, so don't go if you're really starving.
N. C.
Good beers at the rooftop bar. Not the best or cleanest but has a charm to it.
M. T.
Excellent craft beers & buzzing atmos up in the top floor roof bar!
M. M.
Great beer and food. Got ripped off at the pokies though, does not pay out
R. L.
Rooftop is nice. They have an app that let's you choose songs that are being played.
c.
good 7% beer on tap. Although a friend was kicked out, he probably had a few too many 7% beers.
B. B.
One of Sydney’s best rooftop bar!
Good vibe and casual environnement
M.
Great Thai on level 1 and great beer. Sunroof is the place to be.
N. B.
Fun almost dilapidated bar, be prepared to climb some stairs. Different beers on different floors, and some floors don't have eftpos.
J. T.
Rooftop has it's own character but the rest of the building is pretty bad. Good tap beers
S. S.
The beer on the bottom level taste funky. Good atmosphere tho 👌
J. R.
Cheap and large beer selection. 4 floors, nice rooftob and suprisingly good thai food.

The roof top bar is nice for Sunday drinks
G. K.
Rooftop bar is great but the rest of the Pub is a bit of a dive
S. “. H. C.
I love the gungy charm of this place. Good beer, cheap food. This is an office favourite for lunch on a Friday
B. J.
Multiple levels and great beer selection including crafts on each. Food was cash only which is disappointing.
G. F.
Proper pub with something for everyone. Pool table, TVs, rooftop, and an excellent selection of beers.
O. N.
The craft beers rotated on a weekly basis... So so good!
A. M.

Great spot up those stairs and talent is premium !
D. W.
A place for all. Cheap beer and sports in the bottom. Pool and somewhere to talk on two and three. And a rooftop with different taps.

D. H.
Great pub, Neil is the best ever and the rest of the staff are friendly too. Love it here
S. M.
Nice but busy rooftop bar. It's a dump but what do you expect. It's 100 years old.
A. B.
Four-storey bar with a rooftop area for outdoor drinking shenanigans, watching sunsets etc.
Getting up there can be a bit of a workout what with all those stairs
k. h.
Smells a bit funky in here, but my friend Brian likes it, and as i always say, if it's good enough for Brian then it's good enough for me! 3 stars
T. W.
Atmosphere friendly
L. R.
The roof bar is great but the experience gets slightly worse with each floor you descend. And we say we live in a classes society!?
C. M.
5 stars for the rotating beer selection. 2 stars for decor. What a dump.
C. R.
Love the rooftop bar, love the vibe
P. O.
Sweet inner city pub. Good craft beers and nice relaxed atmosphere
