Comments of The Occidental Hotel
K. O.
It's okay for the price. Extremely loud throughout the night with traffic and drunk people on the street. The beds were decently comfy. Opened the blinds to see the view and the windows were so dirty. Also we were staying on the 4th floor and it smelled very strongly of something... Old building and incense? The staff were friendly and for $85 a night it was all we needed.
P. F.
Great service, consistently good steaks, quality range of wines @ very good prices.
The Occi restaurant team has nailed it for years. And great to be back after lockdown.
I. C.
The Occi is an instituition. No nonsense pub with cold beer and cheap eats. Can't go wrong.
S. W.
Cant wait for the back bar to reopen, but still a great pub. Many a icy cold carlton has been had there and will continue...
B. B.
Classic Sydney restaurant. Too service great food and very attentive staff. Great lunch
N. B.
For what its worth, this is an authentic experience for a pub, the heritage runs through the walls.
(It may or may not also double as a brothel).
Great prices, great atmosphere and the best happy hours in the city.
4/5 would recommend.
R. d. Z.
Great range of beers on tap, including some good craft ones. Happy hour of $6 pints (again including craft beers) makes this a great place for Friday drinks!
A.
Nice quiet little pub that serves Guinness on tap which is a bonus.
A. P.
Old school classic Aussie pub. Dark wood furniture and pretty blokey down stairs, but multiple levels and function areas.
Not pretentious, I quite liked it! But don't order anything too complicated :)
H. H.
For the price the room was quite acceptable. Staff were friendly.
J. W.
Sydney icon that has friendly staff and a good selection of cold beer on tap. Always busy on Friday afternoon - great spot to wind down after a week in the office. Decent pub food.
J. O.
Was here for a function, I have stopped here for a beer before. The food was perfect, a medium rare steak you can cut with a spoon. Beer is a little expensive, >$15 for 2 scooners....
d. a.
Good pint price ( $8), for the city.
Nice average "old Sydney style" bar that opens out onto the bustling foot path.
Worth a pint.
S. D.
Fantastic happy hour! 5 dollar pints everyday 4 till 7. Very lively during that time, people spill out into the street, feels very much like an English pub.
Outside of happy hours it's a pretty standard pub, probably wouldn't go there for food or a session on the beers.
J. P.
I bloody love this pub. It's great for a cheap pub grub lunch, burgers (and chips) will set you back about $12, and they're actually good. The steak sandwich is my go to, highly recommend. One of the best happy hours getting around, all beers are $5 a pint, which include a number of craft beers. So good. Normally they're about $9.50 during the day. I've been to all the pubs within 500m, this is the best, strongly recommend it. The only thing that is negative, is that it has an "old man's pub feel", but that's just part of the charm, really.
G. S.
Old school watering hole, with the decor to match and full of City workers... This place is not flashy at all. Does the job if you're looking for a place for a beer with one or two others after work. Beer selection is the usuals plus a couple of decent craft options at each bar (there are two on ground level). Also their happy hour was decent at $5.50 a schooner.
A. H.
Nice vibe. Staff were super accommodating with our group of 10 that rocked up without a booking. They some how managed to move some other groups around so we could also enjoy a meal and drinks. Will be back!
M. K.
Lovely little bar with nice function rooms
D. P.
Yehhhh Nice....
Any pub is always worth a visit. I'm sure I'll be seeing the Occi again sometime soon.
Anyways greetings from Coffs Harbour 😝😜
Happy new year to you all!

Great if you're in the city and you need beer
M. W.
The Fairmont offers some of the best quality steaks in the CBD with very reasonable prices and personalised service. A great hideaway for more private meetings.
Your hotelier Eddie Newton’s decades of experience in providing premier steaks through his own Glenmore Meats, and restaurant operations is really evident here.
P. R.
This is a no nonsense pub. $5 pints during happy hour and 4 bottle beers for $20. It's not a place you'd bring a girl on a first date but it serves as a gathering place for me and my mates so there are few better pubs I enjoy a beer in on a Friday night.
G. J.
Average little pub. Standard beers on tap. Fills up pretty busy on week nights. Friday and Saturday is always a full house with punters drinking out on the street. It’s nothing special and plenty of other spots in the city worth visiting. They also do cheap accommodation upstairs. I’ve not stayed but doesn’t look overly impressive. It is however smack bang in the middle of the CBD. I can’t comment on food as I’ve not eaten here. Price for a beer is pretty standard - although not overly expensive (for Sydney).
Y.
Authentic pub where Aussie office workers go after work. no tourists,no students, only local ppl.kind bartenders, no noisy atmosphere except friday night. i happened to find this pub, but really like here. Beer outside the pub at dusk is great!
t. m.
After an amazing 3 day training course we headed down to the pub for a beer and a bit of a chin wag. This great old fashioned corner pub was alive with people when we got there around 5pm. Apart from waiting a while to grab a beer and having nowhere that a group of people could stand and talk inside we headed to the footpath and held our gathering out there. The standing room only bench table was a brilliant idea. We were all able to huddle along the bench on both sides and have a great chat. Apologies to all teh passers-by as we inadvertently blocked the footpath on occasions as we shuffled around mixing with each other. I love this place and always bring the course attendees here afterwards to wash down the stress of the final course presentations they have to do.
J. D.
Love this pub. Used it as a halfway house and enjoyed $6 pints of Guinness whilst chilling on the street side.
M.
Great location. Came for the trivia. The beer selection is pretty mainstream, which is a shame. Upstairs bar ran out of all of the good beer very quickly and a small order of fries took a while to arrive. Not a bar pub but not amazing either.
D. W.
Old school bar... happy hour
D. P.
Crusty old pub with limited beer selection. Great value happy hour. Good atmosphere.
A. G.
A great bar to kick off your Friday night with some great beers on tap. Also an extended happy hour till 8pm. For those that like a larger volume of beer, the do serve pints.
The only downside is it's hard to go with large groups as the number of seats is quite limited downstairs.
The staff are really friendly and I've heard the bistro is decent, although haven't tried it for myself.
M. L.
Traditional pub, drinks are reasonable value with mixers at $6. Very crowded in a Friday evening, but I liked that you could have your drink on the street. Just make sure you don't stand under the "no drinking" sign, as the liquor licensing police will get upset - thanks NSW government
S. A.
Had a fantastic steak in the restaurant upstairs with friends. The service was friendly and welcoming and the environment casual and relaxing. The steaks though we're first grade and coupled with well recommended wine. A definite find and well worth it.
K. J.
Cheap beer, good selection of food, what else...
Good hang around place after work.
Only thing is the interior is a bit old, 5 star if it had a renovation!
M. C.
Authentic after-work aussie pub experience . a rare treat to be able to have a beer on the foot path and not be treated like a suicide bomber by "security". On that note, the sole bouncer was unobtrusive and let people enjoy themselves while respectfully pointing out the few outdoor restrictions in place. Bravo.
N. M.
We went for Trivia on the Tuesday, Bill from IQ trivia is excellent. The happy hour $5 pints are a big draw, there's a good bar menu all at reasonable prices. The only downside was they don't always keep a table when we book ahead so you need to jostle for seats
S. N.
One of the last remaining old school pubs in Sydney’s CBD. Due to the current COVID restrictions it’s not up to its usual atmosphere however the beers are still cold and you can still sit outside. Worth stopping in for a drink if you’re passing by.
H. B.
Not only great food. The service and care were fantastic. The atmosphere was a dream and had views so picturesque. One of the best Chinese restaurants I've been to in a long time. Actually one of the best restaurants I've been to in a long time. We were looked after so well especially when it comes to service. We highly recommend the East restaurant.
B. B.
Perfect location.. old school charm. Good Tucker. Coopers on tap. What else do you all for?
S. B.
This was a mid afternoon mid week visit, so perhaps it's better at other times. Tired decor. Full of old white men. On the plus side, doesn't try to be more than it is. If you're looking for something hip and trendy, this is not the place. It you want a very conveniently located blue collar pub, it is.
A. Z.
Saw an old work colleague and knew I had stop for a quick drink, 7 1/2 years is a long time without seeing each other. Anyway, pub was nice enough, reasonably priced drinks and the staff were nice. Further research required.
A. H.
The location was great just a short walk to Wynyard station! The rooms were standard, and noise from the room next door were very loud. The beds were comfortable though! Definitely good for a short stay. Not appropriate for the kids though being above the pub and with communal bathrooms. Would definitely stay again.
P. N.
The pub is a bit of a dive really, but it has $5 pints from 4:30pm - 6:30pm every day so you can't complain too much I guess. Popular with after work crowd (mostly men) who want a quick cheap drink before heading home.
T. C.
You'd be forgiven for thinking that Sydney's egregious drinking laws don't exist in this place, what with the bargain happy hour, ($5 a pint), patrons enjoying a beer on a summer's day out on the street and the general convivial atmosphere of the place. (For the uninitiated Sydney has very strict drinking laws that have turned the atmosphere of most pubs into something like a hunger games gulag run by an ensemble of barely literate sadistic hi-viz wearing guards). Well worth a stop for a beer if you're in that part of the city... 5 Stars but loses one for having pokies
T. G.
You could spot this place from a mile away. I haven't seen this place empty, no matter if its a Friday or Monday. Sometime it could clog the adjacent roads with people. Haven't really tried any foods over there, but decently priced drinks to choose from.
A. M.
Great city pub. Perfect place for a low key business catch up. Excellent value. Old world Sydney city charm.
S. B.
Nice pub good service.
J. H.
Happy hour $5 Pints. Place is packed. Standing room only most times. Good steaks. $15 Burger & beers. Conference room upstairs. Smoking outside.
N. M.
Cheap place right in the middle of city
Neat room and comfy bed
Clean shared bathrooms
Friendly staff
But,
Broken wardrobes
One of the rooms did not have an AC
J. L.
Very classy and elegant hotel in the heart of the Sydney CBD, excellent choice of tap beers available, and the student jugs pricing is a well-kept secret of this establishment! Staff are very friendly and nice, and eminently professional.
A. S.
Right in the middle of CBD and next to my office as well as Wynward train station, I love this place for its beers. U step outside of your office and drop in here for quick beer and then off to your home. It gets quite busy during evenings especially weekends. You might struggle to find place to sit and enjoy your drinks after 5 PM but a quick drinks standing is still worth. They have hotel accommodation as well though am not sure of exact facilities they offer.
F.
Cool old school pub in a white collar part of the cbd. Great for a few casual drinks after work or a small private function. Open til late (at least by Sydney standards) and easy to get to and go home from after a big night.
N. B.
Must've got there at happy hour as a pint of 150 Lashes was only $6! Can't complain about that!
F. H.
I went to the occy for a night of trivia with drinks and food. The beer on tap is good, they had a few of the "yak" range, including fat yak and lazy yak. The food was good, as it was a networking event, we had finger food, including mushroom arancini balls, sausage rolls and pies. It wasn't amazing. But good none the less. I haven't stayed at the hotel, but I can't imagine it is the most luxurious.
K. C.
Went for a business lunch on a Friday. It was very busy and white loud, however the food was very good. I had the BBQ platter - sausage with caramalised onion, lamp cutlet with mint peas and fillet mignon. Everything was good except the mint peas which tasted frozen. I'd go back again
S. -. T. I. T.
Centrally located.
Gaming machines.
Very popular on weekend evenings.
Good venue for group events.
D. M.
Great place to catch up with people and have a quick drink. Not much else. I might have to check the food here some day, it doesn't look as enticing as others, it's a great place to drink.
L. C.
I recently held my birthday party at this venue. From the beginning of the organisation process the staff were friendly and helpful. On the actual night of the party the service offered by the staff was 5 star as was the food. I chose a sit down dinner and every guest commented on the quality of the food and wine. The room itself was perfect and we were given the freedom to set it up exactly how we wanted it. I would not hesitate to use the Occidental again for any function and would recommend it to everyone. Thanks to all the staff there I have wonderful memories of a night that was exactly what I had planned and hoped for.
J. C.
Following an evening of pints with an esteemed colleague of mine (Conor Keane, world renowned drinking establishment critic) we departed on an impromptu double date. Needless to say we both got the ride after telling the girls we’d just come from the watering hole of all of Sydney’s finest movers and shakers, the Occidental Hotel. I would award 6 stars if google allowed. Lovely stuff.
G. F.
Best Happy Hour in Sydney.
O. S.
Nice location and vibrant atmosphere for post work beers. Food offerings are limited and nothing to write home about and beer selection is fairly basic. Very enjoyable trivia on a Tuesday evening.
S. O.
Great old style pub, plenty of people in for the food, as you would expect good range of beers. Though if your looking for a really great restaurant head upstairs to the Fairmont ( with a booking)
C. G.
Great hotel. Lots of atmosphere. Friendly and helpful barman. Good beer.
H. W.
A nice steak place that I never really knew existed. The service from staff is very friendly and professional.
Great for business lunches.
Bookings are recommend, as it can get quite busy on occasions.
J. T.
Great location just near Wynyard Station. Cosy pub with great atmosphere. Buzzes with corporate networkers after 5. My lunchtime steak was perfect and the cider was icy. Loved it.
B. F.
Very nice old school pub. With accomodation and a steak place with white table cloths and lovely staff and atmosphere.
C. S.
Cant beat the $6 happy hour pints, early starting at 4.30 and a good range incl Guiness. Tough to match elsewhere in the cbd. Big local salaryman crowd as a result, so get in early
B. E.
Very cool old skool pub downstairs and swanky restaurant upstairs. Awesome place. Great beers & top location right by Wynyard train station.
P. C.
It's scary busy during Covid times.
G. H.
Nice cheap meals, but can get pretty busy on the ground floor. We found it a lot quieter on the 3rd floor, although i think that's only open later in the week. You can order food from the 3rd floor, but will just have to walk downstairs and collect when its ready.
P. M.
Good food prompt attention. The noise of a large room full of entirely male lunchtime diners shouting over each other is intense! Don't expect a quiet dining out experience.
P. D.
The Fairmont is the best value steak place in SYDNEY. A well put together well priced wine list to accompany nicely prepared Stark’s, service is fantastic, nicely timed and relaxed. This place is well worth the visit.
B. K.
$5 pints for happy hour? What's not to like? That and a $11 club sandwich? Fantastic!
It does get ridiculously packed of course but that's expected I guess.
C. H.
Quite simply one of Sydney's finest hidden gems. When the 9-5 grind gets me feeling a little blue, nothing raises my spirits quite like the thought of a cold pint of Stone & Wood in the Occie with the boys. In a city thats known for its high cost of living, ive managed to save enough for a house deposit by only drinking S&W in this fine establishment. If only i didnt blow it all on smashed avo!
Great boozer. Great banter. Great beer.
10/10
S. O.
Nice and cosy place for a happy hour ale. The kitchen wasn't open today, so I will have to come back again.
R. W.
Over 40 years of the beautiful same thing. Love things that have a sameness that is reliable. Yes that is the Occidental, no accident.
W. S.
Simple, easy, genuine.
Just cruised in to the downstairs bar and bistro for a bitta Thursday office escape PubLunch&Chill.
Ordered the beef burg which comes with fries $12.
The price is fair for what it was. Less would be too cheap $15 or more too much.
It was an honest, decent burger made in a very small kitchen by a single handed chef.
They had vinegar and aoili avail which is always a plus.
The range of Australian Pub Beers avail on tap was refreshing to see due to the invasion of cider, crafts etc
The pub was clean and tidy, occupied but not too busy.
With reference to maintained heritage this venue is classic example of a Sydney CBD pub catering to decades of businessmen brokering deals over a schooner or too many.
3.5*
J. C.
Great steaks, good wine list and cold beers.
a. b.
Nice, relaxing setting. Old style, but feels unique. Plenty of history feel to it, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, even though in the heart of the city.
P. W.
Handy location, super busy though
S. S.
Great happy hour, and usually easy to grab a table after work. Haven't tried the food. Blokey atmosphere, but I feel quite safe and not oggled.
J. C.
It does what it aims to do, an old man's pub. It has a great location on the corner of York street near Wynyard. Does steak upstairs and decent price drinks downstairs.
A. G.
Sat down stairs for a quick meeting and a burger lunch. Great place for a quick catch up and convenient to Wynyard Station. Will return with others. Liked it. A forgotten oasis. Staff responsive.
J. M.
Good pub for a happy hour. Decent selection of beers and a nice atmosphere on the kerbside for socializing. Food is decent too.
G. G.
On Friday, there’s a whisper amongst the work group that is passed along, “the Occie”, it never fails to send an exciting chill up my back! The place where everybody knows your name. Definitely one of Sydney’s top 10 bars.
K. S.
If you fancy a cheap easy beer in the CBD head to the Occi. It is definitely an 'old mans pub', but if you don't fancy hanging out in yet another badly made over modern pub this place is perfect.
It does get noisy with punters who range from suits through to builders, through to pretty girls, through to someone asleep at the bar, but that just adds to the atmosphere. The staff are also really nice here and can have a laugh.
The toilets can be a bit feral, but not as bad as an out of town RSL on a Satursday night, and it is an old joint after all.
Go here, order your VB or coopers green, take it outside and enjoy the afternoon sunshine as the cars and people hurry on past.
K. J.
Great location, attentive and courteous staff. Happy hour is crowded but with a positive ambience. Perfect for a meeting point before heading to an event in the city.
S. E.
Great inner city pub with old school vibe amd great beers amd food.
C. K.
A home away from home. The decor, the staff, stone and wood on tap.. part of Sydney’s top 10 places to see. Truly exceptional. Revered as a sacred place to many.
J. T.
The drinks were fantastic their strawberry daiquiri is a must try. Service was quick and reliable and location is great for nightlife as it's close to everything.
M.
The prime rib steak was really tasty and the service attentive. Didn't realise that this steak house even existed bit I'm thoroughly impressed with the food and service. We'll be back for sure
M. L.
Great traditional business lunch, very good service, well cooked steak and an interesting wine list.
G. D.
Definitely not a trendy, stylish modern pub, just a good traditional pub. Old school pub meals are good quality and the Guinness is always great.
R. P.
Great service and food! Perfect place for business lunches or.to have a good time with your mates. Booking is essential specially for Thursday and Friday's lunch.
S.
Good vibe but food selection limited to steaks mostly.
J. X.
Decent bar good for a few bevies but nothing super fancy. Would recommended their steak house instead with a cheap bottle of wine
l. m.
The ooci caters for all from the downstairs bar and pub meals to the flatteringly presented upstairs five upstairs dining. There steaks and seafood dishes are deletable!!!
D. W.
Great selection on tap and apparently the cheapest beers in the CBD during happy hour, though it can get really crowded during those times.
G. G.
Simply awesome on all fronts. Great food, great beer.
S.
Full stars for feeding us drinks til we couldnt walk will definitely be going their again if i remember where it is
S. D.
Hottest barman and awesome staff. Roster the hot dark haired boy more. From your local construction worker
M. W.
The Oxy is a great traditional value for money pub in the heart of the CBD. The beers and wine are reasonably-priced and lunch menu is simple and cheap! Watch out for the crowds particularly Friday lunch and dinner.
D. d. M.
It's old which is cool, but its the CBD therefore doesnt really seem to pull a crowd that really cares too much. Licensee seemed cool but bar staff seem a little bit like they could care less.
F. B.
Great old school pub in the middle of the city. Always busy on Thurs & Fri though so prepare to scramble for a table or seat or nook to lean on!
D. J.
$5.00 pints. Fast bar service. Convenient location. Lots of quiet nooks to enjoy your drink and have a chat.
C. W.
Old school city pub. Front bar is noisy and basic, back bar is more manageable. Not bad for a quick after work meet up.
A. M.
Good food, good beer and food conference space, you can tell this place is great at it's always filled with people.
D. N.
Cheap burgers, well priced drinks and a traditional pub atmosphere. Service is excellent too, and you can sit or stand outside, providing you are well behaved too.
J. S.
Nice pub in good location in the city. Cheap pints for happy hour as well which is great for after work drinks
J. W.
Great, old school pub with an outside area perfect for listening to the delicate tones of car horns signalling that another oblivious, headphone-adorned jaywalker has meandered into the path of traffic
P. B.
Good pub for a beer after work. Cheap happy hour means this place pumps 4-6?
P. S.
We go here every year for anzac day and it's the best place. Great food. Friendly staff. Well be coming back year on year for as long as they'll have us.
T. W. S.
Great restaurant upstairs and atmosphere of a good old pub.Toilets need desperate upgrade
P. L.
I have been dining and drinking at this pub for 30 years . It is a wonderful meeting place in the heart of Sydney near Wynyard Railway station.
K. O.
Ara I wouldn't be fond of drinking but when I do I got at the Occidental awful and very hard. I'd have about 45 Stone & Wood in about 2 hours then I'd have an aul packet of crips and maybe an aul packet of peanuts. And I've have ten more. I'd get up the following morning and I'd go at it again and there'd be no stopping me. I'd take the shirt off any man's back.
A. M.
Great place for a drink after work or to do business during the day. Excellent service and noisy (positive) atmosphere.
K. S.
A few crafts, usually 4Pines Brewery.
Wood paneling makes things cosy. Can be busy but in a good way, friendly crew.
(not for kids)
E. D.
Great happy hour from 4:30-6:30 pm weekdays!
B. M. K.
This is simply Sydney's greatest watering hole. An oasis where city workers can take advantage of reasonably priced drinks and a lax attitude to the banter of the upwardly mobile middle class male.
A. A.
Nice place, a bit crowded but it reminded me a bit of a london pub. It's a good place for early or starter drinks and they hand out free snatchesnacks too.
A. J.
Five stars because there are lots and lots of very fond memories for me. The place is cosy and the timber everywhere gives it great charm. It gets really busy so get there early for lunch.
D. A.
Great bar with cheap but quality pub food. They also sell pints of beer. Love it.
R. R.
Good local bar, early happy hour. Staff very friendly.
C. R.
Great hamburgers created here in the little kitchen on the ground floor. But upstairs an awesome restaurant where all the business executives lunch.
J. S.
Happy hour is good value. Too busy in peak periods...which coincides with happy hour usually.
A. C.
Simple pub with good prices and beer selection. The burgers are good and happy hour prices are excellent. Good for a beer and a chat
D. M.
Great selection of beer, nice food, trivia Tuesdays are the best. Prices are awesome and the vibe of the place is just awesome!
P. S.
It is what it is. Which is a great old school pub. And they have real Aussie lagers on tap!
J. R.
Great Venue, $5 Pints of Stone and Wood. Good Banter with the locals. If you see this guy ask him what he thinks about Ja Rule and Whats app.
D. F.
Food was great (we had the lunch steak) and very friendly staff. Would recommend
J. C.
Decent food. Grest prices on drinks! Not the best layout for tables though. Very crowded.
P. C.
It feels bizarre walking into this pub as it looks so dated.
The presentation room upstairs is good for small, short presentation with a bar at the end of the room that is staffed by friendly staff.
F. A.
Trivia night is very good. We won a bar tab and used it for lunch. Place is quite cramped though.
M. G.
cosy hotel in the heart of Sydney CBD, short walk to/from Darling Harbour. Crispy cold points of your favourite beer.
T. K.
Cheap drinks, venue is a bit run down, but good place for a beer. Will visit again.
T. M.
Nice Old pub. Friday $3.50 bottled beer at lunchtime is good value.
L. M.
I was there for an Australian Writers Guild function & found it very cosy with friendly bar staff & very close to Wynyard station. Great for catching trains to & from 😁
G.
This lovely, small, city pub has been around for ever. Consistently good service
A pity they don't open Sundays.
H. T.
Best joint but don't come here because I love it so much and don't want to have to wait too long for my nectar
S. M.
Great location and cheap drinks! Perfect for catching up with mates before heading off somewhere else!
M. W.
Happy hour is awesome value. Good crowd. Friendly service. Good range of beers.
I. W.
Nice beer, friendly service, can recommend.
k. g.
Beer. And a pretty handy venue to have a function. Reasonable prices and easy to get into and out of.
M. S.
Cheapest happy hour I've found in town. Thursday's and Fridays can get a bit too busy.
N. C.
Old style pup that had a bit tired decor, the womens toilets are hard to find but a good location.
