The Contemporary Japanese Deli is a small, unpretentious, but charming place in a hideaway location. Took me right back to a humble neighbourhood cafe in Tokyo, especially with the friendly and polite service. Tried the hamburg curry, which also came with some miso soup (and bought a $2.50 can of Japanese cafe-au-lait). Curry did not disappoint at all, just wanted more of it! Must come back again to explore more of their authentic and reasonably priced menu.

I have my occasional lunch here on a business day. Love this family run joint serving some great Japanese meals.
My favourite is the teriyaki chicken bento box.
Highly recommended!

Syd and his father do an incredible job, hands down some of the best and most flavoursome Japanese food in Adelaide, you'd be silly not to try it! Thank you Syd always an pleasure seeing you and eating your delicious food!

Beautiful authentic ramen at prices more akin to what you can get in Japan. Flavour is excellent and the portion size just nice. Very friendly service and clean small place. Just wish this place was more accessible! Perfect if you work in the city or nearby.

I was recommended by some friends to try this place as they claimed it had the best ramen ever. I was keen so I tried it out and I loved it! It’s been months since I tried their ramen for the first time and I can’t help but keep coming back to this place almost every week, sometimes twice a week. It’s so good! I highly recommend the Hakata ramen and the Tokyo ramen is just as good also. I’ve tried bits and pieces from my friends dishes like the Japanese curry and with no surprise, it all tasted fantastic. Such an amazing hidden gem in Adelaide and the staff are all lovely people.

Hidden in the corner of the Da Costa Arcade.
What a great little Japanese eatery. Has enough variety offering quick bento or hot noodles. Great ramen noodles for the coldish weather! Match tea is a great tummy warmer too.
Friendly service, but the prices are even better.

A very nice Japanese delicacy in Adelaide. Very authentic!
S. G.
Best Japanese cuisine in town and the most authentic. Try the katsu curry, you'll thank me later! Friendly service too! Domo arigato gozaimasu.

Have not had better Japanese food outside of Japan. I wasn't expecting what I got for less than $10. Absolutely delicious and reasonable portion sizes that left me satisfied but not like is eaten too much like some Ramen places. Will definitely be back.

The feel of the place reminds me of the small restaurants back in Japan. Definitely give the Katsu Curry a try, good size and flavours.

I like Hakata tonkotsu ramen, and this was okay, even though far from the best, but price is inexpensive and staff are friendly. The place is a bit hidden. Interested to try after reading an article about this place.
J. W.
Tonkotsu taste is nice. Price $9.80 is good for its size. It is more like a local Japanese ramen-ya you'd find in Japan, rather than a thick-broth speciality (thought I'd mention this as some do like the thick soup base more). Very nice still. They have a wide range of men, soba, etc etc.

Perfect summer dish, refreshing Hiyashi Chuuka (cold noodle) with sesame dressings. Don't let the name 'cold noodle' hinder you because the dish will be much closely resemble salad or poke bowl, bursting with flavour and texture from the colourful veggies such as tomato, sprouts, julienned cucumber, salad greens, wakame (a type of seaweed) and bamboo shoot, as well as proteins, such as tender chashu (braised pork belly), imitation crabs, narutomaki (fish cake) and eggs, topped with zesty and full-of-umami sesame dressings.
For less than $13, I would say this dish certainly won one of the top spot for an affordable, healthy yet hearty summer dish.

Quiet little corner with a wide selection of lunch meals. The staff served promptly and were friendly. Myfriend had the ramen and loved it too. Will be back again!
H. R.
Sadly nothing contemporary or culinary about home cooked meals brought to you commercially. Yes it is bargain basement prices starting from 8.80 per ramen serve but it also reflects the ingredients used to achieve this too. Adelaide being so small a review on InDaliy n various social media was enough to make you wait 20min.

Best authentic Japanese eats you can get in Adelaide!
Prices are cheap, owners are really friendly and food there is amazing.
Take some time to not only check out Contemporary Japanese Deli, but to also take a look at the hidden gem of Da Costa Arcade!
J. L.
Very Attentive Service, the waiter comes over every time you pick up the menu. They are very quick with orders, serve food and bringing the bill. The choice of sushi is really good and the prices are very reasonable. The finest ingredients used and the friendliest staff in Adelaide.
K. C.
One of the best authentic ramen and bento box meals I had in Adelaide. No frills setup, just good food like you find in small Japanese eatery.
P. m.
I've only tried their Hakuta ramen & sushi - quality flavours that take me back to Japan. I highly recommend if you need your Japanese fix in Adelaide.
T. D.
Small and fast little lunch place. Great food if you're looking for authentic Japanese dishes. Pricing and portion size are generous. A place to a visit.

Great hidden gem!
Very tasty, authentic food and super friendly staff!

My favorite place to eat in all of Adelaide. try a teriyaki chicken bento!

As a Japanese going into a Japanese home made restaurant, is the best Japanese I have had in Adelaide so far. Friendly family run restaurant. I enjoy communicating with them in Japanese to practice my speaking. Meal is reasonable and very delicious. Recommend this restaurant
D. G.
I love this place. The Tokyo ramen is simply the best-value and most delicious lunch available off the mall. I can’t even count how many times I’ve had it now! The other food is great too, particularly the curry, of which there are a few different options.
Highly recommended.
NB: This place is popular so it gets busy around 12-1pm. Come before or after that time and you’ll be fine!
D. C.
Love this place. Delicious Japanese food and friendly service. I'm a happy regular :)
A. B.
5 stars for service, staff & the shop are lovely, but the food is average. We ordered the most popular ramens & takoyaki. The ramens had hard boiled egg & boiled pork (instead of ramen egg & charshu pork) in them.
R. B.
Always love the food here and the owner's are so nice 😊 the miso soup is homemade by his mum ❤️ and it's delicious
T. E.
Very authentic Japanese food at good prices, would even say that their home made noodles are some of the best in the area! Highly recommended!
P. N.
A nice and small Japanese place, very authentic tasting takoyaki and okonomiyaki. Katsu curry was pretty decent too.
R. R.
Best Japanese I've ever had. The curry brought tears to my eyes it was so tasty
C. B.
Hands down, the best ramen I have ever had. I ordered the Hakata (pork based broth which is their most popular) and I was blown away by how good it was. It's incredibly flavourful without being over bearing and the noodles were both perfectly cooked and made. Would highly recommend this place.
J. P.
The guy was nice and tried but no vegan options ☹️. Tell ya what, add vegan options and I’ll increase the ratings to give you guys a better average. Deal? Deal.
L. P.
Loved the broth of my ramen. Great value. The takoyaki was yummy

Simple and tasty food, low prices, and lovely friendly staff, wow!!!!!
s.
I love this place, a local gem! Their japanese curry is the best I've tasted outside Tokyo, and their cute shop is unpretentious and comfy. No fuss, just excellent food and great service.
吕.
Friendly stuff and authentic modern Japanese food.
Y. J.
Reasonable price and tasty Japanese food!
A. C.
Contemporary Japanese Deli offers authentic Japanese meals with friendly service. You have your typical offerings such as Donburi bowls and Bento boxes but also more traditional Japanese foods too. Cheap and Delicious, you really cant go wrong for lunch here while in the CBD!
P. B.
Their Hakata ramen is the best! They have quite a variety of food given their small but clean space. And of all places we ordered ramen, this is the one we didn't wait long. Love their food!
B. M.
a super nice service, super attentive staff, in addition to being served super fast, super good food besides not being a car, and that can be filled all day
R. R.
If you're on a 30 minute lunch break I would not suggest this place. Been here couple of times before, they make good ramen.
P. A.
Truly the definition of a hidden gem. Nestled off street in the low-key Da Costa arcade, it takes some inspiration to end up here. The staff are lovely and friendly, the prices are amazing and everything I've had on the menu is delicious.
They do a steady lunchtime trade so be prepared to wait a little.

Great Japanese restaurant! Best cheap eats in Adelaide
Y. A. H.
Totally loved their curry! Highly recommended
S. C.
Best ramen place to visit in Adelaide. Has good potential to grow into something bigger if they put a bit more resources on marketing and giving the shop a facelift.
A. E.
The Hakata Pork Ramen was easily one of the best I have had outside of Japan. Amazing food and great service. Highly recommend giving this place a try.
S. D.
This place has Japanese people working in it and the smells right for contemporary Japanese food like udon and curry. Looking forward to try it soon, menu is also very affordable.
M. L.
A no-fuss Japanese deli with laminated prints of Hokusai’s 36 Views of Mount Fuji plastered on it’s yellowed walls to give the deli a Japanese feel - but it has limited seating - like in Japan - eat quickly and get out for the next patron. If it was not for an InDaily write- up, this place would have remained a hidden gem in a grim looking old arcade that is Da Costa’s - only known to the office workers in the vicinity.
This place is known for its Tonkotsu Ramen. The broth was flavourful and had bits of pork in it. Will certainly be back.

Absolutely amazing! great staff and the best Japanese Curry in Adelaide! 🥰
J. M.
Really well worth the 20 min wait. Not overly busy but they put great detail and great love into the food. Will be a return customer now I have found it. Priced more than reasonably. And sitting with strangers more than traditionally acceptable. Great spot. With the effort.
D.
great hidden gem, best ramen in adelaide from a very unassuming looking place. super cheap and staff were extremely friendly. will be my go to ramen spot from now on.
M. T.
No frills, affordable, delicious ramen.
A. W.
Divine vegetable curry for $9.50 and had the choice of a small salad or miso soup on the side. Thanks for excellent service, would definitely recommend!
M. C.
This simple and tasty ramen warmed me in such a cold weather!
K. R.
Tucked away inside Da Costa Arcade. We had the most delicious Miso based Ramen and pork bone based ramen. Perfect on a cold winters day.
T. H.
