Comments of The Rising Sun Inn

Still our favourite pub of all time. The most gorgeous cute and cosy fitout.. complete with real fireplaces. Grant and Jacqui and the team are terrific. The food always consistently good. Can’t recommend highly enough, a true Adelaide gem!
L. N.
Every dish was delicious. We had a lovely waitress who was very friendly. Another waiter was not so friendly. Would consider going back because the food was great but didn't feel very welcomed by the waiter, who just put the dishes on the table with a grunt and did not tell us what dish he was placing on front of us, and it wasn't even a busy night. We were only 1 of 2 or 3 tables there. Despite that, we still enjoyed our meal. Food was a bit more on the pricey side, but I could overlook that because each dish was actually very good.

Fair price. Intimate setting. Menu stuck in the 80s. Ditch complex damper for simple wholesome bead and quality organic olive oil. Reduce meat portions. Pear salad great. Wines of quality and appropriately paired with menu choices. Staff clearly well chosen for experience and expertise.

World class food and service in a warm historic venue. Absolutely outstanding in every way!! Incredible food, so fresh, tasty and exciting!! The wine list is extensive and impressive. Best steaks in Adelaide!! Lovely scallops and fresh salmon. Sensational and creative desserts topped off with impeccable service and friendly faces!! A must for fine dining, special celebration or just for a drink at the bar or by the open fire. Love this place.

We'd not been for many years and were soon captured by its rustic charm. John was an excellent host - quickly getting drinks and dinner menus for our large group. There was a good range of dishes. My salmon ceviche was beautifully presented - decorated with edible flowers. My grilled lamb was perfectly cooked and tender. The kitchen and service were well organised and efficient - a very relaxed and enjoyable meal!
T. H.
We just popped in for lunch as we’d never been before, what a lovely discovery!
We were welcomed into a place that was full of charm and history. The wine list had a variety of quality choices, the food was generous and delicious and the service friendly and attentive. I loved it all and am keen to bring some of my special people back sometime soon.

First time back in over 20 year's and it was our wedding anniversary so it was our first choice to revisit.
It did not let us down, still has the greatest room's filled with atmosphere and lovely decor.
Food excellent with lots of choices and off course the "Special's "
Staff attentive and professional. Which you would expect from the Rising Sun.
Very busy so well done Chef and Team.
Thank you very much for a wonderful evening.
J. Q.
Lovely ambience; great service: great menu...entrees were delicious but main meals whilst tastie a bit overcooked. Eclectic art work on display - didn't feel any desire to purchase.

Rising Sun is one of the oldest hotels in Adelaide & like the rest of the few Adelaide heritage restaurants, they have no decor insecurities. Instead of knocking walls down, they"ve kept enough rooms to offer us varied experiences. They"re generally open from lunch to late evening, again a commited but smart strategy. A leather lounge & roaring fire room - attached to the little front bar (which is really clued up for a metro restaurant) is where you naturally want to hang out until you know what you want next, or until everyone turns up, is packed in the after work hrs. A VIP 6-12 ppl area without the obvious VIP label sits next to the lounge. After you pass through these little hospitality continents, a welcoming general dining area is easy to relax jnto & you will be very promptly served, holistically & professionally. Beyond this is a large sunroom dining area and beyond that is alfresco territory. All in Adelaide style, which is a lost art these days. The process of dining is very settled here, they have the experience & the commitment to effortlessly support intimacy, burthdays, business lunches right through to the
extravagence of Penfolds Grange. They have the knowledge to help you find satisfaction. The menu is recognisable, well constructed and handles 1 to 4 courses easily. The wine list is where your temptations will be tested & suggestions were correct. I settled on, with help, a French Burgundy with a beautifully cooked duck while my dear companion scoffed a rabbit pie & the Rising Sun beer...(having a pie on menu is always a good sign that the menu is considered serious by an Aussie/Intercontinental establishment). Quick and considerate service. I love this place. I can see them hitting the centenary mark. They deserve it.

We came recently for a meal at this quaint hotel in the Eastern Suburbs.Waiter very friendly and attention to detail was great.Meal was just lovely with plenty of flavour.Beautifully presented.Great place for a special occasion.Would recommend .

As someone that travels and dines regularly I book at this iconic venue whenever I'm in Adelaide when I want a world class dining experience with friends or work guests.
The food, service and venue are indeed all world class.
Great value for money and enjoyed a night-cap at the fire place on the chesterfield lounge.
Considering the challenges on hospitality during COVID this venue continues to consistently impress.
The wine list is above average and the menu extensive for a venue of this size, my steak was cooked perfectly and all my guests were super impressed with their meal.
The staff are engaging and professional and one of the managers gave a wonder history of the venue.
I'll be back next visit to Adelaide.

Fabulous high tea at The Rising Sun - very reasonably priced & amount & quality of food, especially the dietary requirements catering was just lovely. The atmosphere of the room & hotel was just like out of an old English pub which suited us perfectly. Topped off by exceptional service by a lovely waiter & the manager's efforts to accommodate us during all the Covid misery was second to none. You want a lovely afternoon with the girls? THIS is the place to go & The Parade just down the road to walk it all off - who needs anything else?
M. W.
Good food and really good (friendly knowledge and courteous) staff. Was a very noisy atmosphere, for a table of 4 we didn't resort to shouting but we needed to talk loudly as it was very loud inside. Food was a small serving for the price, but very tasty. Not a lot of room, but also not crowded. Not the sort of place to take kids, so not really my usual but nice for a change.
R. K.
Had Father's Day lunch at The Riser and although very busy we had a lovely lunch. I had scallops and my friend had the salmon both most enjoyable. Nice little touch were the red chocolate hearts the diners were all given. Service was quick and we've booked a birthday lunch next month.
R. E.
Lovely atmosphere. Great meal. Located in a quiet street.
R. G.
Had a great Afternoon Tea to celebrate a special birthday, attentive friendly staff, good amount of very nice snacks and tea/coffee, reasonable price and parking either on street or carpark, a very enjoyable afternoon
H. C.
Calamari wasn't very nice, lemon lime and bitters wan't very flavourful and when we had to pay it was a bit too pricey for the quality. On the brightside they cut my girlfriend's birthday cake well and it was done quickly. However they didn't let us sing happy birthday☹️
S. H.
Wonderful venue with excellent service. We had a high tea to celebrate a 70th birthday. Menu was fairly varied and well executed. One small issue was the final course which was a variety of tarts. It would have been better if the platter had less pastry and more variety of "dessert type" selection
M. G.
Always a winner for me. I had a really lovely night last Saturday. Wonderful food and impeccable service. The company was stimulating what more can one ask of a local night out.
G. S.
Amazing meal tonight !
Been coming here for nearly 30 years and every time we come fantastic food and service 😃
C. R.
Stunning food and great atmosphere. Well done Grant and team for such a beautiful environment and experience. Loved it.
R. A.
Such a hidden gem. Awesome service, beautiful tasty Aussie gourmet food. Extensive wine list, supporting great local artwork. The owners are fantastic people.
M. C.
We have had lunch twice in the past month, taking my parents-in-law for each of their birthdays. On both occasions the food was excellent, the service as good as one could possibly want, and we all had a most enjoyable time. Thanks! We will definitely return.
J. S. S.
Little hidden gem! Beautiful place with friendly staff and nice foods.
L. K. L.
I absolutely love this local gem. Jaquie thanks for indulging us in our tour tonight and introducing us to Katherine. Such a beautiful warm place for a drink after work.
M. H.
Fantastic Food beautiful ambient atmosphere open fire going. Just felt a bit rushed from the waitress felt like she was in hurry to go some where other than that great venue.
V. H.
I've always had a fabulous experience here. From being greeted so well at the door, to the service and care from all the staff. Everyone is just fantasic and the food has always been either great or brilliant. I think any of the poorer reviews must have just gone on one of those random nights. I came here 20 years ago and little has changed. Not to say its tired, not at all...it is charming, rustic and modern in food. They always make you feel very special and care very much whether you enjoyed your expereince. Thanks so much
J. P.
Great food, atmosphere and service. Ate with 7 people including two small children. They were extremely welcoming and really looked after all of us. Exceptional wine selection and reasonably priced.
T. I.
John our host was outstanding.
Service excellent
Food amazing tastes and combinations.
Ambience wonderful and attention to detail was delightful.
Could highly recommend for a special dinning experience.
G. O.
We were running a bit late for lunch and called ahead. The owner agreed to keep the kitchen open until we arrived. The meal and service were excellent and we didn't feel rushed despite our tardiness. Prices are a bit more expensive than your average pub but the food is outstanding. It is easy to see how the kitchen lands them in the top five Adelaide restaurants on occasion.
C. C.
Fantastic quirky pub with charm and intimate atmosphere. Always been a favourite of mine. Service outstanding in all respects. Food varies from very good to outstanding. Try the Rising Sun tasting plate, and thank me later. On the downside, it is expensive, and the mains don't come with much in the way of vegies, so you end up spending even more money to get side dishes. Parking is also a little difficult at times, as the car park is small and the street narrow.
G. L.
We, members of BDC of SA had special opening just for us on Sunday morning.
After early morning club's "Sparrow Fart Run" long drive we experiencing special breakfast in nice atmosphere of one of oldest Adelaide Eastern suburbs houses in Kensington.
We were introduced to long history of this old building by current restaurant owner.
I highly recommend The Rising Sunn Inn, 60 Bridge Street, Kensington to anyone who like to enjoy nice, relaxing atmosphere with love ones or friends.

My wife and I came in tonight for dinner as a walk in, received the most amazing service by John. So very refreshing to have awesome genuine service by quality staff member.
He is an absolute asset.
As a small business owner I know first hand the value of talent and he has a lot.
Will be coming back for sure and singing the praises of a this hidden gem of a restaurant!!! PS food was amazing, tasty as, fresh, flavoursome, beautifully presented. Kudos to the chef on tonight, unsung hero!!!

Our 45 year wedding anniversary- celebrated here- great food, great service, if you have not dined here then you are missing out- it is quaint, different, and a great place to eat.
F. G.
Came for lunch, enjoyed the steak, cooked to my liking, pear and rocket salad was fresh and excellent, sticky date dessert perfect on a wintry day. Great wine too.
T. R. E.
We have enjoyed an annual dinner here for years now and the service and food is always excellent - personal attention, great food and a warm venue. Thank you to Grant, John and the team.
I. B.
The Food has always been consistently delicious at this place. The wife and I have had some significant events here - her surprise 30th, our first dinner out after having our firstborn, and more recently, my 31st birthday.
It has always been a cozy, homely place that serves fantastic food. The new owners are lovely and very welcoming.
Highly recommend for an intimate meal - the wine selection is amazing, you will no doubt find something that pairs nicely with your food.
J. R.
The charm of this pub is its position down a pretty residential street. However the decor in the back room where we found ourselves seated was dated. Service was pleasant but the meals took too long. I found the servings of certain dishes ridiculously small and doubt the seafood dish which I ordered was fresh.
H. M.
Wedding celebration. Prompt, efficient but not intrusive service, and exquisite food made it memorable evening. Thankyou
J. C.
You guys are excellent chefs. Tom (I think he's the owner) is a legend. The rest of the staff are typical Aussie lazy employees, but mean well. The food and service timing are perfect, but the staff are like deer caught in the headlights, seriously. Gave a super epic photo to one of the girls at the front counter, to give to Tom, and hasn't been communicated at all. Very poor staff comms, but great food. Food:world class. Staff and communication: South Aussie: scared of talking. This was easily my biggest turn-off. I've been to top restaurants like the Quay, but these guys just cannot talk at all. Fine, bring me my awesome food, thanks.
G. H.
Beautiful food. Lots of vegetarian as well as carnivore options.
In reply to some earlier comments:
Red brick could do with a white wash to brighten things up, but it's all original so who really cares, the beer is excellent & well kept and the cellar superb.
I don't think the publican can actually smile properly... I make it my purpose in life to make people smile & it's rare I can't, I only got a half grin, which from such a large man makes you wonder about his underlying health...
The waitress was lovely & all staff seemed very knowledgeable.
The food was slow, but I don't think this is a speed option, not MacD's. If you're in a hurry for a parmie you might need to go down to the Parade. I was very happy to wait for such well presented & delicious food. Make sure you try the lemon dessert tart! 😉
M. F.
The food was great but service very slow. Had to wait nearly 2 hours for our food., although they were busy that night., still no excuse.
M. C.
It was absolutely Superb!!!! The food was DELICIOUS!!! All choices for the main course just so beautifully "Plated up"!! Could not have been better!!! We didn't hav an entree or dessert so unable to comment!!! Mary Cousin

J. E.

G. M.
Had a wonderful dinner at The Rising Sun Inn. Food was amazing. Grant, the owner, was beyond generous and John the waiter was lovely. Such a cosy place with so much history. Wish it was on the Gold Coast where I live 🙂
L. B.
This is my very favourite pub. I love this quaint, historic, heritage listed pub. I had my last 'significant' birthday party here. It is great value for money. The quality of the food & the service are 1st rate. You're treated as if you're part of the "Rising Sun family" from the moment you walk in the door. Grant, the owner and proprietor, is always to be found behind the bar and up for a chat. Ask him about the history of the place and you'll be amazed at his encyclopedic knowledge; I'm sure it's in his blood. It has little cloistered rooms off the main bar, one with a fire place. There's an à la carte restaurant and a small function room out the back. Well worth checking out for small to mid-sized functions or get togethers with friends. But 'shhhh' don't tell too many people... I want to keep this place the way it is now for all time.
P. O.
Adelaide you are amazing! Made my night and would definitely come back. Great vibes
S. C.
Although a little pricey it has very good food and service. However I would recommend that only small groups of people attend due to the small size of the restaurant. But I'll definitely be coming back for another awesome meal.

Have been meaning to try this place for quite some time and not disappointed tonight. Lovely food and atmosphere, plus good service. Am keen to return.
