Comments of Hato Gyoza and Grill
K. T.
Yummy authentic Japanese food and average service. Seating is available in a small enclosed space or in a walkway with a row of tables, where there is a lot of foot traffic. They do have good lunch specials in good portions - not too big, not too small.
X. C.
Not too bad. A Japanese ramen-udon-ricebowl place run by Chinese. But they got the whole look right. Food was reasonably priced.
We ordered curry fried chicken rice and tempura udon.
Fried chicken curry rice is average. It tastes like what a normal Japanese Curry Rice should taste like.
What disappointed me was the udon broth and udon. Noodles were overcooked and soggy. Broth was tasteless. Lack the umami of a dashi based stock and quite frankly, lack shoyu and other ingredients to make a good clear soup for udon.
Will probably try the other ramen shop just 1 door down, run by Japanese, really soon.
Will I be back? Probably... if the other shops around are closed.

Popped into Hato for a quick dinner on the way home. First time here and we had the Katsu Udon ($15) and Katsu Donburi ($13). I must say it was delicious and thought it was great value for what we got. Service was quick and staff were friendly!
J. S.
Loved our Katsu Udon and Gyoza. Food was fast and tasty. Lovely restaurant with additional seating in the laneway next door.
L. R.
Hands down best Japanese food I’ve had in Brisbane. So tasty, well presented and huge portions. Never disappointed. Tall girl serving customers is really sweet and gives amazing customer service in my experience 😌

This is a wonderful hidden gem. The food is cooked once you order and tastes so fresh and amazing. I had the teriyaki chicken set and I'm still thinking about it weeks later. I'm definitely going again as soon as I'm next in town.
K. W.
Nice katsu curry. Great price. Curry was a tad mild though. Great presentation.
A. M.
Delightful dish! Absolutely delicious. I had the karaage chicken 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
S. P.
A value for money feed. Great taste, serving size, speed of service and aesthetic.
Watch your food being made through the glass window of the adorable shopfront.
Pork was melt in your mouth tender and the broth was rich in flavours.
E. M.
I’ve been here a few times now and have never had less than an amazing meal! The atmosphere is lovely, the prices are worth the potion sizes, and the wait time is never too long. They also serve Japanese dishes that are hard to find in Australia. Whenever we want to celebrate something with a dinner & drink this place is our first option.
M. H.
I've walked past a few times and never been in until today. My wife said the pork gyoza and says it was one of the best she has eaten, my karaage was crunchy and had perfectly balanced flavours. I will definitely return!
M. K. (.
Recently I had my lunch in this restaurant and it was awesome. Staff were so nice and helpful. Preparing time was reasonable. The food was great. We ordered katsu chicken, curry with omelette and crab meat korokke as a side. Price was ok too. In addition, the interior design was traditional and beautiful. Totally worth it to try.

We were so delighted to come across this little food alley. The menu range at Hato’s is good with a selection of noodles, rice, sides, drinks, Japanese beer and a really interesting Gyoza selection. For the type of casual eatery specialising in Japanese cuisine, I think it deserves a 10/10 and if Google Review provided a rating based on category, I will not hesitate to rate them so. The service was excellent, the seating was cute and the place was very clean. I love the seating that overlooks the kitchen and it’s a very good restaurant for dining as a family or as an individual. The ingredients were very fresh and every dish was beautifully prepared and presented. We ordered the Vegetarian Soy Fish Set Meal, Katsu Udon Noodles and Tempura Udon Noodles. The serving sizes were all very generous. There are various condiment stations that provide a range of chillies, soy, vinegar to choose from. We were served a complimentary jug of ice cold water which was really appreciated for the warm Summer we were experiencing. We all enjoyed our meals and would have loved to try their Gyozas and dinner selection next time. I highly recommend Hato’s and will certainly be back again soon.
A. W.
We went there on a Tuesday night for dinner. There wasn’t many people around and it was a nice and quiet place to have dinner in the city. The waitress was really polite and friendly, typical Japanese friendliness.
We ordered the seared salmon rice bowl, and tempura udon, and they tasted fantastic. Surprised to taste some bits of authentic Japanese food here. The udon portion did not look like a lot, but it did fill me up decently for a big eater like me. The seared salmon was cooked just right, portion wise it may be smaller than the udon thus suit a moderate or small eater.
Will definitely come back next time!
P. P.
Felt like some Asian food and decided to give Hato Gyoza & Grill a go. Very satisfied customers. My girlfriend had the Chicken Teriyaki and I had the Katsu Chicken. Both meals were amazing. Servings were quite large for the $13 price tag and I almost didn’t finish mine. A decent selection on offer and very reasonably priced considering it’s in the city. Will definitely come back again.
L. J.
Reasonable price and portion! I didn't expect too much for unagi as it's not that popular dish in aus but the taste was great. I'd like to come back and try different dishes for sure
O. M.
This is the very first time I've been to this venue and I ordered the chicken teriyaki with rice, it was absolutely delicious. I look forward to returning for another one of their scrumptious dishes.
J. N.
The food was delicious, the portion was generous and it was very well priced. Thank you to the very kind lady who went out of her way to teach me what Tamagoyaki is, and how to pronounce it. The friendly staff changed this review from 4-stars to a solid 5-stars. I will be back very soon!
E. R.
In the heart of the city, this place was packed with the dinner rush. We had Chicken Teriyaki & Pork Gyoza. Yum! Service was pretty quick, considering.
R. M.
We went there for a quick bite and some sake. The staff was friendly and they didn't make us feel bad because we were there just having a drink and chatting. I hope to come back and try their food as they food that was coming out looked and smelled wonderful.
P. W.
It was beyond my expectations! Food court style ordering but the taste and presentation were like from a fine dine Japanese restaurant. Ordered the chiken curry katsu and chicken was tender and the batter thickness was perfect. Portion was good. My little complain is the food was a tad on the salty side.
A. C.
The omu curry rice is yumm. Really love creamy eggs because it pairs so well with the curry sauce and rice!! The katsudon is a little bit dry but nothing major. Would go again!!
A. B. (.
Fantastic little restaurant. There's not a lot of seating here, but 7pm on a Friday night and had no issues. Food came out quite quickly and was excellent quality. Price to quality to quantity ratio was fantastic so I will definitely be coming back here again.
細.
The Seared Salmon and Omelette is fantastic and delicious!!😋😋 Definitely will come again next time 💯
P.
This is a great place for lunch and or dinner. Food is great quality as too the service.
E.
The menu is divided into grilled dishes, gyoza and tempura, with sides and lunch specials also available to diners. Impressive options include gyoza served on a sizzling hot plate, drizzled with Japanese curry and cheese, tempura udon, crispy panko chicken, tender pork kakuni, bento boxes and steamed baos with braised pork belly and katsu chicken.
S. P.
Great food, really good to drop in and have a bite!
k.
This place is INSANELY underrated. I've never seen anyone talking or posting about this restaurant, but I've been here three times and the food and service has been absolutely amazing each time. Unlike other 'Japanese' restaurants in the CBD, they have actually authentic and Japanese menu items that I haven't been able to find elsewhere, like soba, sukiyaki, etc. The prices are very affordable. I highly recommend this place.
A. P.
Aburi salmon was perfect. One of the best I had. Beer was light but fairly strong!
D. W.
Food always has a great flavour, I do like the beef Sukiyaki Udon soup.
M. S.
The meal was lovely, staff was friendly.
Had a great time.
R. B.
The food here so yummy, I like the way they serve the customer, very nice.
A. M.
Great value for money, tasty food, authentic Japanese, what more could you ask for? I always go back for the Chicken Katsu and Kaarage
M.
Great value with little wait time to receive meal.
b. b.
The cold soba was really good! The prices is super reasonable especially with the amount of tempura (which was also very crisp and a nice golden colour, except they had kale... i personally do not like kale..) that they give you. Renkon chips were fantastic as well, my favourite!
J.
Great flavour and amazing atmosphere in the restaurant. Prices are reasonable for the quality as well.
J. H.
The pork belly rice dish was simply sensational. Only 13 dollars. I'm a bit baffled as to how I got so much delicious food on the city centre for so cheap.
Genuinely 10/10. Eat here.
P. v. B.
Great service, nice food, brought out quickly. :)
P. R.
Tasty and delicious food. Convenient price and central location. Friendly staff and fast service.
B. P.
Stopped in for a quick bite on the way to see Paul Kelly. The food came out quickly and was delicious
M. K.
A good selection of food though the gyoza isnt as good as the reputation would lead you to believe
S. R.
Delicious Japanese in the heart of the city
R. B.
Some of the best Japanese meals in Brisbane for a wonderful price. Service was impeccable. I hope to go back soon!
H. K.
Very yummy with just the right touch of umami ....I definitely could eat 5 more bowls no problem...they should have a food challenge....
C.
Absolutely delicious. Authentic and well priced. The shop front looks awesome too!
J. M.
Staff were nice and friendly, service was quick and options seemed to be good but overall dining here was a very underwhelming experience. We had booked a table but nothing was reserved so had to wait for a table to be cleared (after we were taken away from where we would have preferred to sit). I ordered the salmon and not only was the plate it was served on much hotter than the actual meal but it didn't have much/any taste at all, rice with drizzled with a tasteless sauce and vegetables weren't cooked. Other dish we ordered tasted good but was served with far too much rice. Will not be returning.
J. S.
Food was pretty good. Seared salmon was pretty good. Braised pork tasted good but wasnt soft and tender. Portion was quite little too. But I guess it was pretty cheap ($13 for braised pork and $16 for seared salmon)
Also, the cashier should probably be sent home if she didn't want to to work.
K. K.
Got the Soy Fish Teriyaki Set and the Edamame (both are vegan) - food was delicious and very reasonably priced. Only 4-star as I wish they had more vegan options.
N. M.
Food was good, service wasn't so good.
L. W.
The food was good. But I don't like the cashier. She was speaking Mandarin to another staff so I talked to her in Mandarin to order food but she kept speaking English to me the whole time.(Responding in English when I was ordering in Mandarin) I don't like being bothered when having my food but she took my plate when I haven't finished all of the food. The service is awful.
P. D.
Great quality food and reasonable prices.
M. N.
Food was fresh and cooked to perfection, not dry, was so tasty and could not fault it for the quality or friendly service. I will definitely be back again! Highly recommended!
T. J.
The beef sukiyaki was pretty good - would reccomend/10
N. M.
Amazing value. I dropped in for a quick chicken katsu donburi and was pleasantly surprised by the size and quality of the meal. The serving was a bit bigger than I expected, yet the chicken was prepared well and all of the other ingredients were great. Will definitely be coming back to try more of the menu!
E. B.
Great for lunch or late supper . Good price for what you get !
J.
Great meal and service. The quality and freshness was amazing so much flavour.
G. H.
Was pricey but the quantity made up for it. The Chicken katsu curry with egg was amazing. Chicken katsu was fresh and cooked so well I could of had it by itself.
Also i recommend the soft shell crab. Crispy and delicious. I will be back for sure.
M. C.
ABSOLUTELY GREAT
I wish I visited sooner! I work in the city so I saw this restaurant being built and have only went last week! The food was absolutely delicious and they were quick to get the food out for your! Service was great and staff were so helpful and friendly. The food was also presented so well for all you instagrammers. The price was also great! You are really getting your money's worth! I now keep bringing friends to try it out! It's a shame it's not a closed restaurant with air conditioning!
D. S.
Unagi don was OK but udon was quite bland
N. S.
Amazing.. the Edemame was great . Super impressed with the Kitsune Udon. Friendly staff, fast service especially during the lunch rush.
S. M.
Authentic, their soft shell crab tempura is delightful. Recommended for those looking for the real deal.
E. V.
Not sure exactly why the reviews are so poor but I think this Bar deserves 5 Stars. My friends and I came here for group lunch and we all had a wonderful time. Service was very quick and food was excellent. Really delicious! I would recommend this bar to everyone who loves japanese food for lunch.

Authentic Japanese food including donburi (rice), noodles, set meals (rice, salad, soup and a side), sizzling plates and small dishes to share.
I.
To be fair, we thought that this place specializes in gyoza so went there expecting a few different types. We ordered the one type they had, and there wasn't anything special to it. Very ordinary..
R. C.
One of my favourite casual dining places in Brisbane. Great for dinner post-work. Price is appropriate and food quality & presentation are excellent for the money. The only thing lacking is the service and that's what prevents it from getting 4 stars. The regular girls are great (they would bring water to you and give you serviettes/cutlery, service with a smile/great courtesy - this is the norm) but disappointingly, some of the newbies/casuals they hire really need to get their act together (past visits I had to walk the counter to request these things - including today when I am writing this review where the new blonde-haired girl who was served me was also rude/uncourteous).
L. E.
Really awesome full for a little hole in the wall. Highly recommend the gyzoa.
R. L.
I had the salmon aburi lunch special which has clear clam soup and a couple fried chicken pieces on the side. We also got sizzling gyoza as well to share. Everything was so yummy, staff were very friendly.
W. C.
Great tasting food, the $13 meals are very well sized. Unfortunately they said it would be a 35 minute wait for tempura, not sure why it would take so long.
A. K.
They are very accommodating. I loved their curry dishes. Staff are so nice. Once I asked my rice to be swapped to veges and they did it for me. I go there often
J. S.
Very good services! Waitress are nice and willing to recommend food while I’m not understand the menu! Beef udon is very nice and definitely come back again!
P. T.
Order was taken and then a short time later our grilled gyoza came out. Simply delicious. I'd go back just for those.
Next came our lunch dishes. My friend had a Tempura Udon mixed dish while I had Tenzaru Soba mixed dish. The dipping sauce had a surprising subtle hunt of smoke flavour to it.
Staff were pleasant and helpful.
L. M.
Excellent food, speedy service and a cute atmosphere
M. M.
Good tasty food, but the rice is overcooked sometimes. I like the braised pork belly. Yum
A. E.
They have amazing vege options - the soy fish is incredible and the pumpkin gyoza are delicious. It's so rare to find a creatively vegetarian japanese menu.
P. C.
Great Japanese food, bit not as good as it used to be last year when their menu though limited was good as Sono. Hopefully they get back to the same quality
D. W.
Always a tasty meal and the servings are bigger than they seem! Don't pass up the $1 spring rolls when you spend over $10.
l. l.
Steak and Peach Puru Puru is awsome!
L. K. (.
Good food! I had Chicken teriyaki and food come out very fast. Price is so fair for such a huge bowl👍
I. M.
Great price, great food, amazing presentation, best Katsudon in Australia!
D. B.
Very good food. You can find a traditional japanese meal.
D. K.
Love the lunch special. Affordable menu, with delicious food. Great for inner city office workers.
K. R.
nice, big and filling meals. staff are friendly and the food comes out quickly. order at the counter and they being the food out to you. reasonably priced too.
M. G.
Hato means pigeon! And while i don't see any on the menu i would probably order it as everything they make is delicious. A great lunch spot in the CBD
S. I.
Good food. Sometimes a bit of a wait during rush periods, but worth it.
M.
Omg the best chicken nanban I had!! Amount of food is just enough to fill you up!

Your Beef Sukiyaki was actually Gyudon? Very confused. Either way it was delicious.

Decent Japanese food and the portion is generous. Like the sliced pork with dumplings.
E.
It's worthy for waiting 20 minutes for Tempura Soba , best tempura in Brisbane.
A. G.
Braised pork belly was A1, needs a bit more rice
M. S.
The tempura is delicious. It's light and crispy just the way it should be!

(Translated) I requested a set of tempura and udon, Takoyaki!
Tempura has much hard clothes! Compared with true Japanese tempura, there are more clothes than fittings! Udon was delicious. Takoyaki is frozen. Octopus was in, but did not contain any other items! Customer service was good.
