Comments of Bistro Nguyen's
P. L.
I found this place almost by chance, I’ve been to Canberra a few times but never spotted it previously.
The restaurant is nicely designed and had a good atmosphere even at 6pm mid week.
The menu is extensive and the food was served quickly and was very good.
The service was excellent, overall a great experience, I will definitely be back on my next visit to Canberra.
杨.
Busy authentic Vietnamese in the heart of Canberra. Decor is amazing despite the small space.
Food was relatively tasty however the hotpot was lacking flavour.
Great selection of drinks to wash down some of the food though 😅.
As usual, Canberra prices are relatively high compared to other major cities, so budget for 40$ pp for a light lunch.
B. T.
Very genuine and generous Vietnamese food - lots of lettuce leaves and mint. Much more nicely presented than many similar places.

Been here a dew years ago for dinner. Was ok. Though I really don't remember sitting on a holey, torn up seat. Was wondering whether it was to go with the street cafe look!?
Was with my family this time and I ordered their Hu Thieu (excuse my spelling) whilst the rest of my family went for Pho and Bun Bo Hue. I was a bit disappointed with mine as the broth was a bit tasteless. I prepare food with less salt at home and hence when I eat out, salt "rich" food hits me, but this was the opposite. Bland soup. 😔
I tried my family members' broths and they were ok. So maybe it was just mine that turned out like that. It was a busy lunch day with it being Mother's day. DO NOT order the vietnamese spring roll. It tasted more like minimised Chinese spring roll. Ao disappointed in that!
Service was good, though only one waiter had a big smile on his face. The other looked like he had got out of the wrong side of the bed. Perhaps it was too busy a time than usual for him.
Dessert was good, coffee was nicely served in the drip can with less condensed milk than usually served in Viet Nam. All in all good food for quick lunch this side of city, though I shall not venture here again.
J. L.
This Vietnamese restaurant surprised me with the first sip of perfectly simmered meat-broth and decent amount of soft rice noodles in soup.
I visited this restaurant after spending time at Google reviews from others, then noticed it is quite true as I read those.
Two types of noodle soup and 2 pieces of chicken skewers were ordered for my first tasting. Both noodle soups were excellent. On the contrary, skewers were also tasty and a bit small quantity for $8.9
- Spicy beef noodle soup
- 2 x Pho - Beef brisket(soup)
- Satay Chicken skewers(2 pieces)
Highly recommended!

Been here twice on consecutive days. Consistently high quality execution. The seafood lattice spring rolls are just executed at a higher level. Rare beef very tender in the pho and the pork belly amazing. I eat viet often but the perilla in the pork and prawn salad just balanced it. Imagine a seafood fried rice with tender scallops... and wok hay! Who would have thought from a rougher looking place in the middle of Civic!
K. K.
Amazing and authentic. If you love Vietnamese cuisine... itvis the place. Fast service... you will get entrees and main together...
Great Deco. Loved their fish with tamarind sauce and the crab spring rolls.
M. D.
What a fantastic find! Super busy in a Saturday night! If you can make a booking, do so! We came without a booking, however, they still managed to fit us in. Despite the busy period and clearly run off their feet, food came relatively quickly and was great! Very reasonably priced as well! Would definitely be back!
S. Y.
The bistro has really warm and decent atmosphere, making people feeling warm especially in winter. The food is really tasty with the large portion. We have the special noodle soup with various beef and nice broth. The beef stew with onion and carrot is also delicious accompanied by the toasted bread roll. Service is quick as well, highly recommend.
P. L.
Cozy place to eat Vietnamese food in small or larger group. I have been here a few times for lunch and tried different dishes. Some are good and others could be improved.
The Huu tieu My Tho, served dry, was a bit bland. The Chao tom on sugar cane skewers was tasty. Pho was okay. I asked for fresh cut chili but the pieces I got were dry and not very hot. Salad and mint were fresh though.
Service was pretty quick. Staff always friendly and helpful. Toilet available in the building.
J. Y.
We were craving somea nice and warm Vietnamese Pho, and we were glad to go Bistro Nguyen. We have tried numerous Pho restaurants in Sydney and this one in Canberra is the best we ever had.
Will definitely come here whenever we come to Canberra.
A.
Good variety of food. Fair prices. Good location. Relaxed ambiance. I had some fried rice and stir fry. Enjoyed it. Also try the grilled pork rice paper rolls. Pretty good value. My only gripe is that they don't accept Amex and they slap you with a surcharge for other credit cards.
P. H.
Being a Wednesday night and with other restaurants being less than half full, the atmosphere at Nguyen's was great with near 100% capacity taken inside. Good efficient service and friendly staff. I was even able to change my order after having sent it off to kitchen. Thanks. :) The food as pictured.. combination meats and crispy noodle was average in flavour but had a good serving of meat and veggies.. I counted four decent sized prawns. I would try the pho next time as it looks good. Recommend for some Viet food in central Canberra.
M. Y.
Have eaten here a few times. Very good food and great service. Not too expensive!
C. S.
Fantastic pho, and very nice chicken and spring roll vermicelli. We will definitely be back!
M. M.
Being on an adventurous spree I decided to go against the traditional phone and opted for Duck legs which was chef recommended and it didn't disappoint. It was so visually tempting that tables next to me had to have a go at it too, and I am not exaggerating here.
I also took a 333 pale ale, but that was a little off for my taste. I was disappointed with the rainbow dessert though. If you really want your dessert, try something else possibly.
The staff was on their toes that evening with a constant pour in of diners, but I was attended to well through my meal. They did struggle with their communication, but ensured what I wanted and got it done. Also, it was nice to see many solo diners pop in and NOT being offered corner seats. Over-all a very impressive experience.Thank you Bistro Nguyen's.
S. Y.
Vietnamese bistro. Pho Special (with meatballs, steak, flank, tripe) was tasty with generous servings of beef. Service was friendly and restaurant had a very positive vibe. Came here on a weeknight at 8pm and it wasn't crowded. Minimum $20 for credit card use was a little annoying.
B. B.
Excellent food place with terrific staff. The menu is extensive and the restaurant seemed reasonably busy, so maybe make a booking
d. c.
1/12/19 Authentic, hearty and delicious. Bistro Nguyen's serves a delicious bowl of beef pho that's perfect for any day. Having grown up on the best pho in Sydney, this place certainly ranks quite high, especially due to its unique combination of spices and that much needed peppery hit. Thanks for my first meal in Canberra.
J. W.
Popular Vietnamese restaurant in Canberra CBD serving pretty authentic and quality fair. Attentive service and cosy setting, will come back again to try some other dishes.
S. T.
Well located restaurant. Pho noodles were over cooked making it hard to eat as the noodles kept breaking. Very extensive menu and can seat a large number diners (40 inside) and seating outside as well. Pictured is the pho dac biet
S. H.
Was very busy for a Thursday evening, but the food was served fast and we all enjoyed it. Great place for a relaxed dinner out.
A. K.
Quick service and nice food. If you're looking for a tofu dish, there is more than the 1 option highlighted on the menu. The picture is a vegetarian option that also included tofu. Not all staff are aware of tofu options. 👍
I. M.
Delicious pho. Ordered the Beef combo pho. Soup was amazingly flavoured and everything was just quality
M. F.
Food-great, fall in love with their veg tofu salad, the food was so good that that was my only salad bowl that I finished, ever.
Service- great
Cost- affordable
If you are in town and want to try Vietnamese cuisine, must make a visit there. “RECOMMENDED DEFINITELY”
C.
Not bad for a Vietnamese restaurant. This is a bit up class from your usual Pho shop, so the prices are up too.
$14 for a bowl of noodle is not bad. Soup is a bit weak. Service is not too bad. Good location and decent menu
C. B.
This unassuming and unpretentious Viet food place is on the corner of the Melbourne Building in Civic. It serves authentic Vietnamese cuisine, and they do some really delicious special dishes. Try the signature sweet and sour pork belly. Yum yum. Real Asian beers too.
T. M.
Heaps of options, I liked that I could try new flavours - food was delicious. Outside seating options. BYO
D. H.
Good food and friendly staff.
My only critacism is they charge a surcharge if your bill is under $20, or you pay by credit OR savings card. With all the other restaurants around this place who don't have a surcharge, I'll be dining elsewhere in the future. It's not the money, it's the principle.
L. P.
Fantastic VNese food. Prawns, Shantung Chicken and incredibly good fried rice. Will visit that end of town more often.
M. S.
Great service. Very yummy food. Update: Did a delivery order during lockdown. Food arrived as predicted, and covid precautions were followed. Food containers were wrapped really well to prevent spills. All the dishes were fresh and felt and tasted like we were at the restaurant too. My daughter loved the Pho soup.
B. G.
Big menu, super busy (if a little hectic) at lunchtime which is a great recommendation in itself. Great food. Good stuff.
A. D.
I've had a few meals at this nice little Vietnamese restaurants, and they've always been good.
The Pho is fine. Not exceptional, as the broth is just a touch bland for my tastes, but still a solid 4/5.
The Mi Bo Kho on the other hand... Excellent. I could not ask for a better rendition of a classic dish. I'd go back again and again for it. 5/5
N.
The food here is very tasty and the building and decor is very nice as well. Some of the dishes weren't quite what I had expected when they arrived but that's probably down to my lack of knowledge about Vietnamese food. Can't go wrong with the Pho though which is easily one of the best in Canberra!
S. E.
The place is pretty and cozy. Staff are friendly with smiles in their face. We ordered pho calamari and vietnamese iced coffee. Food came on time. As I'm big fan of Pho I'd say this Pho is average in taste. Calamari was average on taste as well. I loved the iced coffee.
C. E.
Great tasting food and all within a great location!
Visited Nguyen's for the first time for lunch, enjoyed the atmosphere and loved the cuisine. Very easy to pick your favourite dish and the service was incredibly fast.
Go for the food, one of the best Vietnamese restaurants in the Canberra.
B. S.
Food is good and ingredients are fresh.
Decor is modern and inviting.
Be aware they won't take a credit card for orders under $20 which violates every bank and card merchant agreement and will make a takeout order for one more expensive unless you bring cash.
C. M.
Awesome food. Quick too and pretty well priced. New fave Vietnamese restaurant in Canberra!!
J. K.
Love their fresh food- Recommend Banh Xeo and Bun Bo Xao!
F. M.
very kindly squeezed us in just before closing. the food was amazing and the atmosphere was lovely 😊😊
C.
i didn't like pho before i came to this place, now i've learned to love it! went first on a busy day; they missed our entree order and then brought out 2 accidentally, but understandable it was very busy. food and service is great!
F. L.
I come here often for their amazing bun bo hue (BBH). I haven't tried many dishes aside from the BBH so can't really comment on the full menu. The ambiance is great, decorated with Vietnamese knick knacks through out the restaurant. Only downside is the small surcharge when paying by card (aside from EFTPOS) but it's a small price to pay for delicious BBH!
S. S.
Great food and atmosphere. Was busy when I turned up, but the service was prompt and the Pork Chops with Tomato Rice was excellent. Would recommend for a quick bite or dinner with friends
K. W.
Had the special pork belly. It was OK, but just breaded nothing special. The sauce it was soaked in was just packet sweet and sour.
A. D.
Good comfort food. Interesting Decor. Good service.
t. l.
The foods were good. The service however left much to be desired. Flies were ever present; when I asked for a doggy bag, the waitress was so impatient that you could see a scornful expression on her face.
N. O.
I was surprised to see a sausage in my pork bang mi, but it was excellent. My husband's chicken curry with a French roll was also good. Friendly efficient service, good prices, convenient location.
S. G. H.
Excellent quality. Fast. Big plus that there is large quantity of vegetables. Extensive menu. Prices very reasonable.
Only tip would be: bring your own chopsticks instead of using the ones provided.
A. D.
Average at best. The chicken satay and spring rolls were dripping in oil and not fresh.
The noodle soup lacked flavour and needed livening up with sauces and chilli's.
J. N.
Excellent seafood and vegetable in clay pot for lunch. They have a really great range of healthy options on the menu and serves are generous. Also very good with dietary requirements.
R. A. P.
We’ve been to Canberra for a number of times but never discovered this gem! Authentic Vietnamese food, even better than the ones in Vietnam! We ordered Pho with special combo, Prawn toast, chicken wings (no pict) and Crispy chicken with tomato rice. All yummy, not salty and good price! We’ll be dining here everytime we visit Canberra.
M. D.
Really really good. Family run, boisterous, delicious. Lemongrass Chilli tofu is the best I’ve ever had, even my meat living friends order it. The fried rice cake entree is another awesome veggie dish.
S. A.
Best food I’ve eaten in Canberra yet! Better than some more pretentious places too. I had the chill basil stir fry with chicken. It was very flavoursome & a decent size for the price. Loads of veg if you want something healthy too. Good service, quite relaxed vibe and not noisy.
P. I.
Went here for a friend's birthday dinner. Being a picky vegetarian I generally find Asian places a bit tricky given their use of fish and oyster sauce in almost everything. But they had decent vegetarian options on their menu. The fried rice (my go to dish) was nice and smoky but nothing out of the ordinary. My friends were raving about the crispy noodles and veggies with cashew as well as the squid and cashew chicken. The Vietnamese iced coffee is worth a try. The menu is quite extensive for meat eaters including a few dessert options to choose from.
Average cost is about $35 per head.
P. M.
Awesome genuine Viet cuisine in a casual atmosphere. Great service and unpretentious. We tried and shared four dishes on our last visit and couldn't fault the authenticity. Brought back fond travel memories. Single diners can sit at the bar with some travel and history books to browse through.
P. S.
Compliments to the chef for the food but the service was appauling. Had to wait 40 min for our food- all of which didn't arrive at that point. Our entrees came in just when we were about to finish mains, we ended up cancelling them. All in all, food was impeccable, my only suggestion would be to work on service in the future.
S. H.
The food is amazing but you will never get the whole tables order at once, prepare for that, otherwise, great!
R. F.
When your Vietnamese restaurant does a proper special beef Pho, you know you're at the right place
K. N.
Great Vietnamese Pho and other dishes, and pretty quick service during busy hour. Great menu range. We saw many people having a good time enjoying the food. The waitresses were nice and friendly.
J. S.
Nice atmosphere and friendly staff but food is not authentic. Ordered rare beef pho but the soup was too thin, just salt water. Beef, way too big and thick. Exotic for non-Asians or tourists. No Vietnamese recommend any Viet place in Canb unfortunately.
A. P.
If you're after really tasty Vietnamese food in Canberra this is the place to go. Pricing and quality are great and the service is fast and professional. Have been many times and will be back many more.
T. T.
Ordered the herb duck pho and it's awesome!
L. S.
Pleasant echo of Vietnam at its best. Good food, service and decor that includes nostalgic motorbikes and the driver's cab of a xe lam auto rickshaw from the post war era and now banned from Vietnam's cities.
M. N.
Probably wasn't be to my taste. Pho was way too sweet but full of flavour. Hu tiu was over filled with soggy noodle and absolutely over sweet. Vietnamese crepe wasn't crispy as expected. However it was a nice ambience, cozy, and warm. Staff was friendly but lack of attentiveness. Would not mind to visit again when stopping over.
L. H.
Not bad choice for a quick bite. Visted late on a Friday night after some drinks. We were lucky the kitchen was still open, found out it closes at 930pm. Decent Viet food, particularly in civic and late. I had vege Pho ($14,5) which was filled with loads of vegetables. Not much tofu though. My friend's rare beef pho was huge portion and reported to be good.
M. C.
We stopped by as it was packed out with people and it allowed BYO. It was hands down the best Vietnamese food I've had in Australia. Everything we ordered was seriously tasty and it was all great value and the staff were friendly too.
M. J.
Delicious food. Friendly staff. Quick service.
B. C.
Loved everything about this place. If your looking for fine dining, go somewhere else. If you want to feel like your on an oversees holiday, try Bistro Nguyen. Amazing food and a fantastic dining experience.
C. C.
One of the best Vietnamese restaurants in I've been to. The service is great, the food is delicious, decor is cool. If they had a cider on the menu it would be 5 stars!
T. V. (.
Pretty good pho by Canberra standards. Shouldn't be bad enough to make people throw up as I've never heard of anyone throwing up before, so you can disregard Vincent's review. I have had better pho before but in a small place like Canberra this is so far the best one.
J. T.
Fantastic food! Great service. Lovely corner spot. Highly recommended.
S.
Great Vietnamese restaurant with a fantastic and diverse menu; most dishes are awesome. Great Pho, and make your own rice paper rolls. Often busy.
M. J.
Great atmosphere, cool staff and amazing food, so many options
Ç. G.
I suppose it's fine as long as a Vietnamese restaurant goes. The food is okay and the staff is helpful. Nevertheless, if you are not accustomed to Vietnamese food already, then I should suggest you think twice before stepping into it.
J.
Phở is awesome Not being biased coz I'm picky seeing as we make authentic phở at home. Their soup base is delicious without msg & the meat is real tender. I won't eat it anywhere else in CBR. But don't just take my word for it lol. Try it for yourself 😁
Broken rice with pork chop is also good btw!!
L. T.
The service was a little slow since it was so busy (even for a Sunday), but it was very much worth the slight wait.
I could nitpick on little things here or there, most of which would probably be personal preference, but it honestly had the best pho I've ever had in Australia. The broth was rich and very full of depth, the meatballs were juicy and bursting with flavor, and the tripe & brisket were stewed to perfection.
Whenever I'm in Canberra, I'll definitely come back here.
L. C.
Never had a bad meal - they are always delicious! Staff are so friendly and service is fast. Slightly more exxy then your basic Asian restaurant, but that’s because it’s just that much better! One of our fav regulars
D. M.
Top quality Vietnamese restaurant. I loved every dish there. Will definitely go back there next time I'm in Canberra. One of the best Vietnamese restaurants I have ever been to.
F. S.
Maybe the best Special Beef Noodle in Canberra City? And The three color drink is also good. Food is best but few staffs are not polite. Btw, I appreciate the cashier teach me how to say Three color drink in Vietnam Language😊
A. R.
The overall service was warm and welcoming ignoring the waiter's english proficiency. I ordered a beef pho that comes with beef meatball, tenderloin, brisket and meat strips/cuts etc. The noodle mouthfeel and tension was good not perfect probably due to the quality of the noodle and the soup is flavoursome. However, the meat strips was a bit tough probably due to the assumption that different parts of the beef can be cooked at the same time. The portion of beef in the noodle soup was not much mainly noodles. Other than that, the overall experience there is fine and will be coming back soon.
M. G.
Great food. Great customer service.
B. T.
First time having Vietnamese, so probably not the best judge, but the beef wagyu pho was one of the best things I’ve tasted
G. O.
Good value Vietnamese cuisine
A. Y.
Great vibes and delicious pho. Service can be slow and sometimes oblivious especially when busy. Good place for casual dining with friends and family!
A. C.
Great place. Food is great, location is amazing.
Nice
M. B.
Was visiting for the long weekend and needed something hot to warm me up, food was great! Just what I needed
M. A.
Delicious food and great atmosphere. Plenty of gluten free options. Would visit again!
J. M.
Favorite pho in Canberra. Great prices, friendly staff.
J. O.
This is the best new pho place in Canberra. The broth and cuts if meat used in the pho are great, and this is one of the only places in Canberra that offer other traditional cuts such as tripe if you dare try it!
They also have an extensive non-pho menu if you aren't after a big bowl of soup. The rice paper rolls are a great entrée
v. p.
Went there last Saturday.... Had a best pho.... And amazing experience with customer service as well........ Thank you.....
B. H.
The food is very tasty but service was slow. Our son waited a long time to be told his meal was no longer available. Ordered a new meal and waited again. Over an hour wait in total
A. B.
Good quality Vietnamese. Love the beef in betel nut leaf. Aldo, check out the cool mural on the main wall.
A. C.
Packed in and waiters can miss you. Food is great though. Good Pho and plenty of other dishes to select from too.
L. L.
This is my favourite restaurant to have Vietnamese Pho in Canberra! It is highly recommended for its perfect location, great service, reasonable price, and definitely tasty food.
R. S.
Awesome Beef Pho, generous size, plenty of tripe and brisket, beef stock/ soup was arguably the best iv had in Canberra. Do yourself a favor and try the Beef Pho!
g. h.
Lovely food pleasant surroundings and great staff. Big menu...
M. L. J.
Pho was mediocre. Noodles were mushy and the amount of meat did not reflect my order for extra beef.
J. &. L. R.
This place has really good food and very quick service to deliver your meals. Fantastic! Nice service as well.
M.
Bistro Nguyen's really take pride in their food and service. I was pleasantly surprised by the variety and creative flair on comfy classics, and for very reasonable prices.
P. A.
The egg noodles and fried chicken are to die for. The vibe is super warm, super welcoming!
C. P.
Food was average and service was poor. Had to cancel one of our dishes as it didn't arrive even though we asked about it 2 times.
D. L.
High quality tasty food at reasonable prices.
R. D. R.
Food is amazing. Sure will comeback when visiting Canberra again. And service is also very good.
E. C.
Absolutely beautiful. I felt like I was in another continent. Complex yet coordinating flavors that went with complimenting textures. We'll definitely return 👌
P. C.
We just had a delicious meal at Nguyen 's, service was impeccable and super fast, highly recommend this for authentic Vietnamese food.
T. C.
Didn't think you could get such awesome pho in the middle of Canberra. Wagyu beef pho is so amazing, from soup to meat.
M. S.
Great and fresh vietnamese food. Fast service. Was there for a quick dinner. Definitly to recommend
N. I. H.
Nice food 🥘 and goods services.
J. N.
Great food, lots of gluten free coeliac safe options (including a separate fryer and gluten free soy sauce!)
J. C.
The food is amazingly good. We went for our anniversary and had the best tasting food I’ve had in Canberra for a long time.
f. g.
Great fresh food for a reasonable price. The place can get a little crowded at times but there is usually a seat available.
E. B.
We come here often and really like it. Fresh and fast, the food is tasty and the staff are nice.
R. M.
Nice flavours and prompt service. Easy to find location right on the corner. I plan to come back and check out the pho.
M. L.
The best phở (rare beef noodle soup) in Canberra in my opinion.
In the other hand, the bún bò huế (spicy beef soup) is far too oily.
C. M. (. O.
Great menu. Big serves. Huge variety on the menu. Pho was delicious. Great prices.
T. S.
Great variety of food to suit everyone's taste buds. The salt & pepper squid is a favourite!
C. D.
This is my favourite Vietnamese restaurant in Canberra. You will find some special dishes that you wont find in any other Vietnamese restaurants...
D. Z.
Great place for Pho soup and nice environment.
N. D.
Yummy Vietnamese food. Great that they're open till 9:30pm! Perfect venue after the movies!
F. T.
Excellent pho and one of the best casual local dining places to eat in Canberra.
A. B. (.
Nice food
K. C.
Hearty pho for a good price
C. F.
The Pho was very nice but the broth was a bit tasteless which was sad as the meat and condiments were very fresh 😳
V. C.
By far my favourite Vietnamese restaurant in Canberra and the closest thing I can get to a good Cabra feed in Sydney!
M. P.
Nice ambience in the Melbourne Building. Good Pho and my favourite, the caramelized fishsauce chicken wings.
P. L.
I bumped up the rating based on my craving for ca phe sua da. Is that so wrong? The bun bo hue here is on point and the roll your own summer rolls are fun.
C. M.
Nice place who reminds ours days in Vietnam. Nice food at very good price.
M. F.
Great Vietnamese Food with a little spin to it.
Fresh Quality food a little Expensive but worth it
R. L.
Very awesome Pho. Reminded me again that I love Vietnam, and the people and the food. Will definitely be back.
A. C.
Great service and food was good too
K. G.
Cheap and cheerful bistro with quick service and tasty food. Visited with a large group who all enjoyed their meals.
D. P.
My favourite Vietnamese restaurant. Best to book ahead because they are always busy.

Fantastic food and is a great price, service could be a little better, sometimes slow, but they are a very busy place.
G. P.

D. S.
Good vietnamese restaurant, service is a bit hit and miss but generally good. Great place to go for Winter
A. S.
Quick and delicious
A. T. C.
Average service, not even water was offered. Calamari was blend, at least the pho was decent
