Comments of Charcoal Restaurant

My partner and I have been going out in Canberra looking for a nice restaurant. I think we found it tonight. The service is top of the game. The food was so excellent, and for a steak house, it had plenty to offer, from soup to chicken, even had pasta dishes. One of the best steak and chicken dishes in town and not to mention the creme brûlée’s were to die for!!
D. T.
A mate and I have been doing a steak tour around Canberra, and this place easily takes the cake. Quality meat, cooked to perfection, great sauces (though very expensive for just sauce), and classic sides. The only thing that comes close is Marble and Grain...but Charcoal is still in a league of its own.
J. M.
Canberras oldest resteraunt and a reliable steak house at that. I had a prawn cocktail entree which was good and for main a 1.5kg tomahawk and was not disappointed, the steak was good; cooked to order and came out hot with yummy side dishes
Charcoal is an institution in Canberra and all lifers know it and talk about it, it’s supposed to be one of our finest joints and our most iconic steakhouse which is why I was disappointed to see them selling pod coffee and not real, fresh ground coffee. For me that removes them from being fine dining and takes them back a notch.
The service staff are exceptional and really made for a pleasant evening.
D. P.
Steak was cooked exactly as requested, staff were friendly and attentive. Overall a great feed.
S. D.
Very nice food, great service, prices are a little steep. Small prawns as an entree a piece of crusty toasted bread would have been lovely to dip in the garlic sauce as it was delicious.
The steak was very good, a little more seafood toppings would have been nice for the price.
Sticky date pudding was lovely.
B. P.
We dined here in late February 2022. It’s on the pricey side. However, the steak was very good - tender and cooked just as ordered. Loved the garlic bread.
T. G.
A fantastic steak house with an intimate setting. A good selection of cuts and sizes, with options if steak isn't your thing. Definitely above the quality of the chain steak houses but you pay for it. Wait staff on occasion have seemed a little disinterested but I never had to chase them for another drink like I do at many restaurants. Will visit again.
L.
Hands down the BEST cooked steak we've ever had. 350g eye fillet with pepper sauce done medium rare & 250g eye fillet surf and turf done medium. Served with basic veg and baked potato but the perfect accompaniment for a perfect steak. Will dine again!!

Charcoal Restaurant is a hole in the wall steak house that has been operating in Canberra since the early 1960’s. The atmosphere is cozy and warm with dark brown and red decor that is reminiscent of a bygone era. We ordered the Rib Eye Steak medium rare with pepper sauce and it was cooked to perfection. The chocolate mousse was rich and velvety and not too sweet. There is an extensive wine list for all budgets. We paid just under $200 for 2 main meals, 2 desserts and 2 drinks.
The staff and their service makes you feel like an old friend.
I recommended you make a booking in advance.
I’ll definitely be back again!

I was recently taken to Charcoal Restaurant after walking past it for many years, the decor is reminiscent of the old days, leather and wood chairs, rattan-esk light shades and wine stocked shelves. The food, while basic in concept, it's fantastic! We've been back twice in as many weeks and would love to make it my local. The Cajun steak is the best steak I've ever had and the chocolate mousse is definitely a favourite. It's pricey but definitely worth it!
G. P.
Best steak I've had in my entire life! I ordered a 400 gram scotch fillet which was special in the evening. The waitress explained that this cut has been dry aged for 100 days and I decided to give it a try. The steak was sublime. After the first bite I couldn't help but close my eyes and fully enjoy the taste of it. Full of flavour and perfectly cooked.
K. E.
Steak cooked to perfection but plate presentation not a strong point. Prawn cocktail entree underwhelming in flavour and sizzling garlic prawns not sizzling. Good wine selection. Attentive customer service. Overpriced for not being an a la carte restaurant. The restaurant is the oldest in Canberra and has retained its originality.
L. E.
The waitresses were extremely nice and the steak was cooked perfectly. The sticky date pudding was also a highlight but the garlic prawn entree was slightly overpriced.
M. P.
Ahhh - the Charcoal. Most people know what they're getting into here. This place has been operating in Canberra for over 50 years. Funniest part about that is that I think that's how old the décor actually is. ;o) I actually mean that in a good way though. It's not a massive place - kind of cosy. But the décor has a sort of old English pub feel to it. Very warm and hospitable.
As you've probably guess by the name - this place is a steak restaurant. Yes - they do have some other things on the menu, like fish and chicken, but let's be honest - people are coming here for the steak. All the steaks. Eye fillets, T-bones, sirloins, rumps and all the variations - carpet bag, mignon, pepper, Dianne - the list goes on.
We had a friend who was finishing up at work, and he wanted a nice steak for a kind of farewell lunch. The special of the day happened to be a 1kg tomahawk. He couldn't let that one slide. Challenge accepted. I settled for my staple - an eye fillet - as did one of the other guys. Although, he went for the larger one which came out sizzling.
There's not too much to say here. All three steaks were cooked exactly as requested. They were all super juicy and tender. Veges and chips were great too, but the steaks....oh the steaks. Tomahawk guy even managed to finish his. I think he might still be under his desk at work in a meat coma - but hey - if you're gonna go - what a way to go, right?
The staff and the service were also spot on. It's been a while since I've been here, but I tell you what, I'm not going to wait that long again.
A. D.
I loved the steak, professionally cooked and served!
C. M.
Still good after all this time. Unfortunately, the Tornados Rossini was not the classic, which was the main reason for our choice of restaurant. Instead, simply fillet steak with mushroom sauce. Very disappointing.
F. J.
The prime rib is an absolute pleasure, it was cooked perfectly and melts in your mouth. I walked for 20 minutes on a 38 degrees trying to burn calories before having my steak. I guess I have to walk for another hour to digest this 500g meat. The staff are lovely and definitely will recommend to my friends and colleagues. It is my first time to try the berneise sauce I hope I spelled it correctly and it compliments the taste of the beef.
D. T.
Enjoyed the prime sirloin. The meat was done medium as requested and tasted tender and juicy.
D. A. B.
Had a really nice meal here

Best steaks! You will not want to go anywhere else in Canberra after this. Super juicy and delicious. Can also order fresh oysters. Friendly, helpful and attentive staff. Little bit more costly but we'll worth it! May need to book in advance.
C. R.
Fantastic steak, 500g fillet, try it. Wish I had taken a pic. Yes it is expensive, but worth every dollar. Wine list pretty good as well. Will definitely be back.
C. R.
One of the best steaks I have ever had!! I will definitely be going back again. The owner and staff are so lovely.
A. G.
I have visited Charcoal Restaurant with my friends recently. I was a bit sceptic about food options in the beginning as I am a pescatarian, but I was happy to know that they have got options for people who do not eat meat or who are vegetarians. I've had an amazing prawn linguini which was just delightful. They also got fish options and most of the entrees are seafood based.
I really recommend this restaurant as the atmosphere there is amazing and everyone can find something for themselves on the menu.
Also, I am not normally a dessert person but I have decided to try sticky date pudding from their menu and it is just the best dessert that I have tried in a long time.
A. H.
The restaurant has a classic atmosphere like stepping back in time. Was informed by staff on the history of being the longest running restaurant in Canberra. Amazing steaks cooked to perfection. Service was great and attentive. A must visit for every Canberran.
J. M.
Amazing restaurant! 🤩
The staff are fantastic😍, but I'm afraid it will ruin your steaks at home...
I now refuse to cook steak at home no thanks to Charcoal and their delicious steaks 🤤
D. 0.
Great place to have dinner with special someone. Delicious food; great hospitality; great atmosphere; just a great place to eat overall. Highly recommend.
T. W.
Wow, this place has the best steak I have ever had, cooked to perfection, whilst on the pricey side if life, was well worth the money spent, great cosy atmosphere, and the staff were only to happy th attend to us when we needed service. Well done guys.
A. C.
One of the best steaks I've had.
Medium rare 350g Scotch Fillet with Dianne sauce 👌.
Great wine selection and very attentive wait staff.
Has that premium cosy modern Australian restaurant feel.
l. d.
Great Canberra Institution that knows how to cook a steak. Appropriate matching wine list.
Give them a try if you're in Canberra. You won't be disappointed!
D. B.
WOW! This restaurant just rocks a steak. We were there on Friday and Maia our waitress was awesome, the food was fantastic and our evening was just perfect.
I'd recommend you book as the place fills up. I had sizzling prawns in a butter sauce for entree - be sure to get some garlic bread to soak up the sauce and steak Diane for main. My steak was perfectly cooked no one at our table had any issues.
This is one of my favourite places for a steak and will be back again soon.
W. K.
Sensational Filet Mignon! Thick and juicy, cooked to my liking.....with plenty of cracked pepper. Service was just right, so if you want a no fuss place for a steak, Charcoal Restaurant should definitely be considered.
Also, while the menu doesn't list steaks over 500g, ask. A mate had a 750g rib eye that looked awesome.
E. D.
Absolutely fabulous dining experience! The service was caring considerate and efficient but what made this place were the steaks! Cooked to perfection, the best steak Ive eaten in a long time. Excellent quality.
Z. R.
Great steak, fairly pricey for all meals. Quality of food is exquisite. Homemade gravy, steak comes with jacket potato and steamed seasonal veggies. Host was lovely. HUGE selection of red wines, also quite pricey. If u dont mind paying a bit for perfect steak go here. You wont be disappointed :)
s. m.
I love this place, old time vibe, great steak.
J. J.
Spectacular food! We'll be back!
Z. K.
Food quality and service are great, spot on. The Decor needs an update. Highly recommend for the food, but not the wall carpets ;)
D. S.
The entrees were superb. My reef and beef main was just great. The young waitress was very professional. Washed down with some Wynns Coonawarra Cab Sav. Fantastic. Thank you team for a great night. Always a high standard here. We hope you will be back. If you are, we will be.
M. G.
Wow. An evening dinner with friends. The Tornedos Béarnaise were a plump pair of perfectly grilled eye steaks with the sauce just thick and cloying enough. I tried my best to make it last as long as possible, but in the end, they were gone. A proper Canberra restaurant, reflecting the city's heritage.
D. G.
Honestly the best steak I've had in Canberra
C.
Great food & service. I had the Surf & Turf, let me just say it is one of the best, if not the best one I have ever had. The sauce was to die for and the meat was cooked to perfection -- I asked for medium rare more towards rare and the chef nailed it. The entree was also memorable, the sizzling Garlic Prawns -- also cooked perfectly and another awesome sauce that I used garlic bread to dip with. I have nothing but constructive & positive feedback. The only thing that was difficult, was my own severe disabilities and the lack of space in the restaurant, although having said that I would still go back anytime & everyone was very helpful, as well as accommodating. Keep up the great service & food.
I. D.
Steak cooked to perfection and best Dianne sauce in town! Very attentive customer service. You will see me back again soon Charcoal!
A. M.
The best mouth watering steaks ever...
The wine menu is to die for. Best atmosphere for a small restaurant but it works. You might get to see the odd politician there also. Bring plenty of cash. $500 (including tip) spent between 4 people, 2 bottles of amazing wine, mains & desert. A must do to celebrate new job & or closest friends falling pregnant. We luv ya D.J. xoox 🤩😍😴
P. P.
I couldn't fault the experience or the food. The customer service was outstanding and the food is exactly what you want when you want steak. Cooked to perfection and oh the sauce!!! Then dessert... Oh... just fantastic!
F. T.
If you want a good steak, this would be the place. As a Sydneysider, I was not impressed with the service. Due to a mix up in orders (probably because we ordered mains only compared to everybody else), our mains came after an hour. None of the wait staff even noticed that we did not get our mains although the main desk was right infront of our table (there were only 3 of them). A table that ordered later than us had their wine, starters and mains before us. The next table didn't get their menus for at least 20 minutes.
At least the food was pretty good.
J. S.
This was the best steak I had ever had in Canberra. Perfectly cooked. Very expensive, but perfectly cooked.
O. S.
Classic steak house. Had the steak dianne. Perfectly cooked.
S. T.
Brilliant, consistent meals. Great, expansive wine list. Wonderful, original decor and feel. Intimate setting with attentive service. Please never change, it's so rare to find a genuine, old school restaurant like this
S. H.
Expensive (about 50 per steak), noisy even in the most distant corner on a typically empty night (Tuesday). The T-bone steak had chewy tendons etc in it, which indicates too short and/or high-temperature cooking. Other than that, the meat was tasty and juicy, but not exceptional. The potato and vegetables were ordinary.
A. M.
Absolutely delicious steak, lovely warm atmosphere and excellent selection of drinks!
R. J.
Well cooked (medium rare) eye fillet, jacket potato and vegetables finished with slice of homemade apple pie. That is me to a t. Staff really nice and friendly. Really enjoyed the meal and the whole experience. Highly recommended.
K. W.
Food was tasty and staff were great but I expected more for the price. Restaurant is quite small and was packed full, could barely move unfortunately.
M. C.
I came here with a friend from Adelaide. We had excellent steaks, cooked exactly as ordered and the staff were helpful, friendly and prompt. I would come here again any time. Many thanks for a very pleasant evening!
H. M.
Best steak I've had in my life followed by an amazing sticky date pudding. Staff were also great and the atmosphere cozy but not uncomfortable.
I. W.
Loved the food and the service. Highly recommend
C. S.
Great steaks and wine list. Been there many times over many years. Recently changed hands and menu altered. Bring back desert pancakes for the return of the fifth star.
R. K.
Excellent wine selection and a great steak that was cooked to perfection! If you love a perfect steak, this is the place for you.
O. H.
Little pricey but worth it, come early if it's lunch time.
B. L.
Prime rib medium rare, perfect. Great atmosphere, attentive staff and very friendly chefs. Loved the way the kitchen part of the atmosphere of the restaurant. Thoroughly enjoyed it!
A. B.
Great steak and service, great that you could hear eac other speaking.
P. S.
Great steaks with a 20th century European restaurant ambience
M. S.
Very average. Over priced. You can get a steak that good for half the price at the hotel down the road. Decor is terrible.
J. D. A.
Best steak I've ever had in Canberra! Loved the quiet atmosphere, the nice ambient lighting and service was fantastic.
A. B.
Just not my thing. Sure the steaks are flavorsome but mine was under cooked, for the price and the fact that this is their specialty it was disappointing. Dark and drab. No need to go twice
P. A.
Meal was great. Steak was cooked as requested. Seating was a little uncomfortable but managed ok.
A. W.
Excellent steak, would definitely come here again. Came with side vegetables and baked potato. Steak cooked perfectly at medium rare.
D. T.
It’s cosy, it’s different but the steaks are magnificent. Excellent service, great atmosphere. A brilliant dining experience
A. M.
There's a reason why they've been here for over 50 years. The best steaks and prime rib in Canberra. Can be very busy.
J. S.
I ordered a medium-rare steak and got a medium-rare steak, which is a rare thing (pun intended), and the steak was beautiful. Highly recommend, worth the price.
J. T.
A little pricey, however the steak is WELL worth it.. definitely one of the best steaks I've had in Canberra.
s.
The only reliably exceptional steak in canberra with a great winelist. Wonderfully thorough but never overbearing service.
A. P.
Always good steaks. I would have given 5 stars if they didn't charge extra for the sauce, given the already high priced steaks.
S. M.
Amazing food but unfortunately there were two dishes that we couldn’t order because they had run out of them and it was a Friday night!!
P. W.
Top notch dining. The beef and reef was amongst the best steak I've ever had. Small and intimate.
C. M.
Still a very good steak place but it is missing the old world charm and exceptional quality it used to have. I suspect it has changed ownership.
T. G.
Great steak. Great character feel. First class wine selection. Service good. Will be back.
S. F.
If you enjoy restaurants with a bit of old fashion style and service this is the place, great steaks in my opinion cooked perfectly (I like mine rare).
M. D.
